We've found the best Moses baskets on the market, from stylish, statement designs to practical and wipe-clean options – and even baskets you'll want to reuse in your home

We've pulled together eight of the best Moses baskets that keep your baby snug, cosy and close by.

Moses baskets are smaller, cosier and much more lightweight and portable compared to the best bedside cribs or cot beds, making them a popular choice for newborn babies. As they are significantly smaller Moses baskets are great for small bedrooms as they are likely to fit where a crib or cot won’t.

A Moses basket is an ideal baby bed for day time naps, as they are lighter and more portable than bassinets. This means you can keep your baby near you wherever you are in your home. Moses baskets are also perfect for keeping your newborn nearby at night.

The NHS, NCT and Lullaby Trust all recommend that your baby ideally sleeps in the same room as you, in a bed of their own, for the first few months of their life. Newborn babies can go straight into a cot bed, but if you haven't got space in your bedroom or are looking for something more compact for the first three months, then a cosy Moses basket makes a great first baby bed.

One your baby is able to roll over or sit up by themselves, it's time to upgrade them to a cot bed which will prevent the baby from falling or climbing out.

Whether you're looking for statement design, a minimalist Scandi look, an artisanal style that will last as a storage basket, or are looking for something more practical like a wipe-clean model, we've rounded up some of the best Moses baskets on the market.

This gorgeous Moses basket from The Little Green Sheep offers amazing value as it's made from quality, natural materials (it smells lovely and grassy), has an organic quilted liner and a natural mattress, plus looks cosy and stylish too.

What we like

The quality feels amazing for the price point. The soft quilted liner is cosy, plus protects newborn skin from the rough woven natural palm leaf basket. The organic and soft quilted liner is also super breathable, important to help air circulate and also keep little ones all cosy and snug.

The mattress is great too, feels soft and cosy (yet firm), and the mattress alone is worth around £40. In a nutshell it looks and feels more expensive than it is.

The basket is amazingly light compared to other Moses basket designs, making it really easy to move around the house.

You can purchase a wooden stand as an extra, which folds away really easily and is easy to store.

What we don't like

Nothing.

Anything else?

When baby outgrows it or you've finished using it, you can remove the liner and use the basket as a pretty storage basket instead. Lovely for storing blankets or toys in the nursery or playroom.

Anything else?

Similar to The Little Green Sheep Moses basket, this basket can also be re-used as a storage basket for things like toys and blankets after the baby outgrows it, giving it a longer lifespan.

3. DockATot Dream Weaver Moses Basket

Best Moses basket for making a style statement

Specifications
Size: H28cm x W50cm x D80cm
Material: 100% Cotton fabric, 100% Wood inner structure, 100% Leather trims
Suitable for: Birth to six months

Reasons to avoid
-Very expensive-Very heavy, not as portable as other options-Doesn't come with a stand

The DockATot Dream Weaver Moses basket comes in a choice of iconic Morris & Co prints, making it a very stylish option for the nursery or the rest of the home.

Sustainability is one of the other defining features, with an eco-friendly coconut coir mattress, wood structure, twin top leather handles and cotton covers.

The coconut fibre mattress was selected for its non-toxic, eco-friendly and moisture resistant properties along with air-permeability to keep babies safe. The wood structure makes this a very durable design that's built to last for multiple children.

What we like

With a choice of iconic Morris & Co prints to choose from, this Moses basket looks super stylish and eye-catching, would look stunning in any nursery, and is bound to become a firm favourite.

As it's quite a large basket it will last your baby longer than other Moses baskets, plus it can easily double as a storage basket for the home.

While it's certainly a heavy, rigid and sturdy Moses basket compared to others (making it a little less portable), this also makes it feel super sturdy, durable and long lasting, meaning that it offers much more longevity than other products out there.

What we don't like

It's very heavy for a Moses basket, and the size feels quite clunky, so is particularly tricky to carry up or down stairs.

4. Shnuggle Dreami Moses Basket and Curve Rocking Stand

Best modern Moses basket for contemporary design

Specifications
Size: 85cm x 50cm
Material: Polyproplene, polyester, foam and cotton

Reasons to avoid
-Made from synthetic materials-The handles are quite short, which can feel awkward to carry

The Shnuggle Dreami Moses basket features a striking contemporary design with a stand that can switch between stationary bedside bed and rocker.

Made from hypo-allergenic polypropylene instead of wicker, this contemporary Moses basket is ventilated and easy to clean, while a ventilated base and breathable mesh covers make it very safe and breathable for babies to sleep in.

It’s larger than traditional Moses baskets and comes with a luxury quilted mattress and 100% cotton liner included.

What we like

The stand features a genius design that means this Moses basket can be used as a bedside crib as well as a rocking bed. The stand also folds up for easy storage.

Both the stand and the basket are light to carry, making it easy to transport it between rooms. Plus, the liner is easy to pop off, making it easy to clean.

What we don't like

The mesh liner is for safety and breathability, but doesn't feel as cosy as other designs.

The material is also synthetic: the Moses basket itself is made from non-toxic polyproplene, and the dressing set is 95% polyester and 5% cotton.
The water-resistant mattress is made from a PU foam and the quilted mattress cover is 60% cotton, 40% polyester.

Anything else?

Overall, the Shnuggle Dreami is quite large compared to other Moses baskets, so you might need a bit more room for this one. On the bright side, that means more space for your baby.

5. The Basket Room's Woven Moses Basket

Best artisanal Moses basket

Specifications
Size: 80cm long x 43cm wide x 25cm tall
Material: Elephant grass, leather handles, natural plant dyes
Suitable for: Birth to six months
Reasons to buy
+Beautiful design+Ethical+Handmade+Fair trade+Made from natural materials+Comes with mattress, sheet and liner+Will last for years and makes a stylish storage feature in the home once baby outgrows it
Reasons to avoid
-Natural materials are harder to keep clean-Doesn't come with a stand-Quite expensive compared to other options

This stunning handwoven Moses basket is made from elephant grass with leather handles and natural plant dyes by a cooperative in Ghana.

Once baby outgrows it, you'll still be using it as a statement home decor piece - and frequent Instagram fixture.

What we like

This handwoven basket is beautiful, hand crafted, and ethically made (the baskets are handmade in Northern Ghana by a weaving cooperative). Each woven baby Moses crib takes three days to complete – hence the price tag.

The Moses basket comes with a mattress, sheet and liner. As it's made from all natural materials (mainly woven elephant grass), it smells amazing. It also comes with cool little tags that tell you who made them.

The basket will also make a very stylish storage feature in your home once baby outgrows it. It would look cute in a nursery or kids room for storing dolls and soft toys, or could be used for blankets, books or other.

What we don't like

The only criticism we could find is that because it's made from natural materials, it will be harder to keep clean.

Anything else?

As the baskets are handmade no two are identical, so colour or pattern might vary very slightly from photos.

6. Tommee Tippee Sleepee Baby Moses Basket

Best Moses basket for wipe-clean, no-nonsense practicality

Specifications
Size: W49 x D86cm
Material: Basket made from recyclable plastic, with 100% cotton inner
Suitable for: Birth to 6 months
Reasons to buy
+Wipe-clean basket and stand+Water-resistant mattress cover is wipe clean and machine washable+Light and easy to carry+300 perforated walls for maximum breathability+Rocking stand has safety stops to make it static+Modern design+Amazing value+Could possibly be used as a laundry basket once baby outgrows it
Reasons to avoid
-It’s more functional than stylish-Made from plastic

If you're a parent already, and understand the mess that comes with a baby, chances are you'll favour a practical option to an Instagrammable one.

If this isn't your first rodeo, or you value practicality above all else, then the Tommee Tippee Sleepee Baby Moses Basket is for you. It's the most affordable and economical option (sensible considering babies only use a Moses basket while they're really small), not to mention the easiest to keep clean.

Despite being great value, the award-winning design features 300 temperature-regulating air holes (great for breathability) and comes with a rocking stand to rock baby to sleep.

What we like

This Moses basket is available in a range of muted colours, offers unbeatable breathability (with 300 air holes), and unbeatable good value at a low price point.

You can gently rock the stand to get your little one to sleep and when all is quiet the stand comes with safety stops giving you the option to move it into the static position.

The main selling point is that the whole basket can be easily be washed and cleaned with warm soapy water – not only ideal for cleaning up unpredictable bowel movements (at both ends), but also for keeping the basket clean for re-using with siblings in future, or even handing down to a friend.

Last but not least, the Sleepee’s handles are moulded as part of the basket itself, so you’ll never get that awful fear that the stitching could come undone.

What we don't like

While the plastic design makes it super practical and wipe-clean, it's probably not the best option for parents looking for something more natural.

The liners that comes with this Moses basket can't be replaced as Tommee Tippee don't sell them individually. So when your liner gets dirty (very likely with babies!) you will be unable to have a spare while it gets washed.

And as practical as it is, it's not the most stylish thing to look at.

7. Purflo PurAir Breathable Bassinet

Best Moses basket with all the bells and whistles

Specifications
Size: L84 x W47 x H110cm
Material: 100% Cotton with Polyester mesh fabric and canopy
Suitable from: 0 - 6 months

Reasons to avoid
-The stand is quite heavy and can be awkward to move around, so this is not a portable option-The night light is very bright and shines directly above the baby’s head

The Purflo PurAir Breathable Bassinet is a safe and breathable baby bed that attaches to a stand to turn it into a bedside crib.

The bassinet can be easily removed from the frame and has an auto-latch system that ensures a safe and secure return when re-attaching.

The 3D mesh mattress is fully breathable and in combination with mesh side panels at the head and foot end will help air circulation through the basket to avoid overheating, creating a breathable, hypoallergenic and safe environment for babies to sleep in.

The hood features 3 hanging toys and a soother centre which plays sounds a lullabies, vibrates and has a soft glow light.

What we like

The Moses basket and accompanying stand are super easy to put together, with just a few connecting parts.

If you have other small children in the house, the Purflo PurAir Breathable Bassinet is great because the deep bassinet is securely fastened to the base. The structure of the base gives a lovely smooth and gentle bounce along with a vibrate function which helps settle little ones. The lullabies and nature sounds are pleasant and not too ‘tinny’.

We love that this Moses basket has breathable mesh panels at the head and foot, which will help keep baby cool even during hot summer months.

There's also a storage basket underneath which is handy for keeping baby essentials (nappies, wipes, muslins, spare clothes ) within arms reach – ideal for night time wake ups.

What we don't like

The stand is quite heavy and can be awkward to move around, so it's not for parents looking for a more portable option.

8. Mack + Milo Alysha Moses Basket with Stand

Best wicker Moses basket for a traditional look

Specifications
Size: 84cm tall x 40cm long x 30cm wide
Material: Wicker
Suitable for: Birth to six months
Reasons to buy
+Classic, traditional look+Raised sides give it a cosy, cocooning feel+Comes with a rocking stand+Comes with bedding+Great value for money
Reasons to avoid
-Moses basket is a bit bulky to carry up and down stairs-The rocking stand doesn't have a fixed setting

The Mack + Milo Alysha Moses basket features a cocooning wicker basket with and a classic rocking base.

While the grey colour feels chic and contemporary, the wicker basket style nods to a more classic, traditional inspired look.

What we like

It comes with a mattress and cosy bedding, and a rocking stand which is great for lulling baby to sleep.

The basket liner and blanket are made from beautifully soft waffle fabric, which looks cosy and comfortable.

While it's heavier than other Moses baskets listed above, it's still light enough to carry from room to room.

What we don't like

Made from wicker, this Moses basket is sturdy and robust with a rigid, fixed hood – this means access to your baby can feel a little restricted. On the other hand, it also creates a cosy and cocooning space in which your baby will feel safe.

It's not too heavy to carry around, but does feel a bit bulky so isn't practical if you are going to be going up and down stairs.

The rocking stand doesn't have a fixed setting. That means you can’t stop it from rocking.

Things to consider when buying a Moses basket

  1. Size: Check the dimensions to make sure the basket will fit in your room and that you have enough space to move around it.
  2. Portability: If you're planning to use the Moses basket for daytime naps, and to put baby down during the day, you'll want a lightweight option that has sturdy handles.
  3. Breathability: A breathable sleep area is crucial for the safety of your baby. Ideally you'll want a basket with perforated holes in the sides, and a breathable mattress.
  4. Material: Do you want a durable, sturdy basket or something made from soft, cosy fabric? Traditional Moses baskets are made in different materials, including maize and wicker. If you’re planning on using the basket for more than one child, wicker, wood or plastic options will last longer than woven grass ones.
  5. Rocking or static? A rocking stand will give you the option to rock your baby to sleep, and they often come with stops that also make the stand static / secure. With both rocking and free-folding stands, it is best to buy the Moses basket at the same time, so you can get one that matches and fits exactly.

What's better, a bedside crib or a Moses basket?

Some parents prefer their babies to sleep in bedside crib or a bedside cot from day one, as it saves money, saves having to buy more than one bed and means not having to make the transition to a cot later on. Others think their tiny newborn might feel rather lost in the vastness of a cot, and prefer a cosier cocoon for the first few months.

The main advantage of a Moses basket is that it's much smaller than a crib or a cot, and is easier to fit next to the parents bed, plus is easier to move around the house to keep baby nearby during the day.

The main disadvantage of a Moses basket is that they only get used for the first three or four months of a baby's life, so some parents don't find it good value.

If value for money is important to you, then choose a Moses basket with a versatile design that can either be used as a storage basket or laundry basket after baby outgrows it, thus extending the life span / longevity of the product.

How long should a baby be in a Moses basket for?

Moses baskets are recommended for babies from birth anywhere up to the age of four to six months, or as soon as the baby is able to roll over or sit up by themselves.

Is a Moses basket worth the money?

In our opinion, yes. The first four months of a baby's life are hard work, and a Moses basket will make life much easier. This is because a Moses basket is easier to move from room to room, giving parents a safe place to put baby down during the day. A Moses basket is also an ideal baby bed for having the baby in the same room as the parents, as it takes up less space than other options.

Last but not least, if you buy a more versatile design that can either be used as a handy storage basket or laundry basket after wards, or is made from a durable material that means it will last for future siblings, then you will get more value out of it.
