I Tested H&M's Muslin Duvet Cover Set and I Can See Why It Has an Almost 5-Star Rating — It's Effortlessly Stylish, Super Soft, and Completely Fuss-Free

I'd had my eye on H&M's Muslin Duvet Cover Set for some time, but I hadn't gone through with the purchase initially, namely because it hadn't been so long since I last bought a bedding set (I am a bit of a bedding fan), plus, while affordable, it's fair to say that this set leans on the slightly higher than average price point for high street bedding — but for good reason. Though, sucker as I am for softness, I was too keen to add it to my collection to wait any longer, so I bit the bullet and bought a set in early June.

As one of the best affordable bedding brands, H&M's bedding offering is much like the rest of its homewares range: good quality products crafted with classic materials. And it has a good reputation to boot. Having been keen to try a muslin bedding set for some time, it only made sense that I go to one of my favorite high street brands to test it out.

So, after months of testing, these are my honest thoughts on H&M's muslin bedding set — where it absolutely excels, and the teeny niggles that didn't put me off it but are worth knowing all the same.

Is H&M Bedding Good Quality?

As previously mentioned, H&M's bedding has a good reputation — and for good reason — not to mention this specific set has a 4.7-star rating from its 664 reviews at the time of writing. Made from 100% soft cotton — top of our list of linen bedding alternatives which experts prefer — it has a 250 thread count in a loose, open plain weave, making it an airy, breathable, and lightweight set that makes you feel comfy and cozy without overheating.

It felt so soft when the order first arrived that I was a little worried about putting it in the wash for fear of losing some of its softness before testing it on my bed — but having washed the duvet cover set countless times in the months since I've been using it, I can confirm that it is as soft today as it was the day it arrived.

Both the pillowcases and duvet cover are a good example of quality stitching, which gives me confidence in their ongoing durability and the general care and attention to detail in the manufacturing process.

How Is H&M's Muslin Bedding to Sleep In?

I can genuinely say I've had some of the best nights' sleep since ordering this duvet set — including some of the hottest this country has seen this summer. It's incredibly soft and super cozy, but because of its lightweight, breathable bedding material, I never felt overly hot; and as much as it kept me cool and comfortable on those warmer nights, I equally felt warm and cozy on cooler evenings, too.

The pillowcases have a lovely feel on your face (as I often sleep on my side), though my issue was that I tend to leave one of my earring sets in overnight, and that was what had snagged one of my pillowcases — pretty sure that's on me, though. But having said that, the open weave structure of muslin does leave it more susceptible to snagging which is something to take into consideration.

One other slight issue with the set, I would say — and I'm not alone in this, based on the reviews — is that the sizes run a little large. I ordered a king-size set for my king-size bed, but some reviewers note that the double might be a better fit for a king duvet. I also haven't noticed any shrinking after many washings; if anything, it might have stretched a tiny bit. But it depends on your duvet and preferences; the slightly bigger fit didn't bother me, either way.

How Easy Is H&M Muslin Bedding to Care for?

It's a very easy duvet set to care for, in my opinion — it washes perfectly every time, and I tumble-dry it, too, (and it also dries fast) plus it always looks and feels as good as new every time.

The benefit of the material's natural crinkle texture is not just from a style point of view, but also that no ironing is required — because who has time to iron bedding? It lies on the bed in an effortlessly put-together way that looks as good as it feels when you're curled up within it.

The envelope openings of the pillowcases and the metal press studs on the duvet cover also make for a super simple removal for washing — no inside-out button fights.

The main thing to note in terms of its care is to be mindful that it can snag, though after months of use and washing, I’ve only noticed one small snag in my pillowcase from wearing my earrings to bed at night — but I’m still wearing them to bed every night!

How Does H&M's Muslin Bedding Rank on Style?

H&M's muslin duvet cover set is an ideal bedding pick for a modern bedroom with a relaxed, lived-in look, adding texture and warmth while offering a lightweight, breathable, yet cozy and soft feel for a good night's sleep.

With a decent variety of color options, there is a shade to complement your room's style, and it suits both traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

Finish off your bed with one of the brand's throw blankets or cushions to add a little more drama, or keep your bedscape minimalist and let the set do all the talking — I oscillate between a lumbar pillow across the center of the bed and nothing at all, depending on my mood!

Is H&M's Muslin Bedding Worth It?

Though it may be ever so slightly on the pricier side of high street bedding, it’s not overpriced for what you’re getting. It's a high-quality set that's easy to care for, a dream to sleep in, and looks effortlessly chic on the bed.

That said, if you prefer a crisper and cooler feel to your bedding, then this is not the set for you — for that, I'd recommend Rise & Fall's Cool and Crisp Bedding. Equally, H&M's Muslin Duvet Cover Set has more of a relaxed look, so it's not the right pick if you're looking for a more formal, hotel-style bedding vibe.

Muslin bedding won’t be as long-lasting as linen and cotton bedding, and it’s open weave will make it susceptible to snagging, but if softness from day one is a priority, and lightweight breathability, this muslin duvet cover set is well worth it.
