The pROpeRTy

A penthouse apartment in the Södermalm district of Stockholm, comprising a living room, dining room, kitchen, office, storage area, bedroom and bathroom.

LIVING ROOM

The owners moved in to an unmodernised period apartment in Stockholm, home to ornate wood burners, original oil-painted ceilings and elaborate cornicing.

Architect and designer, Massimo Buster Minale, had worked on so many clinical, neutral interiors for clients that he and his wife wanted the complete opposite – dark, decadent and brimming with character.

The jumble of contemporary prints, Mexican Day of the Dead artefacts and battered vintage relics in their handsome 1860s flat is the perfect antidote to an overdose of white walls and beech floors, typical of most modern Scandinavian interiors.

The colours of the ornate, original ceiling (above) are echoed in the couple’s choice of artwork and accessories.

Get the look For Swedish tiled wood burners such as this one, try Masonry Heater Builders. The Wingback Remix armchair is by Buster + Punch. The Fifties penny pinball machine is a family heirloom. Junction Antiques stocks vintage slot machines. Find Mexican Day of the Dead artefacts, such as the small skull on the pinball machine, at RE. The skull painting, called Allusions, is by Tom French. In the gilt frame is another work by Angelique Houtkamp called Georgette.

DINING ROOM

The motto “less is more” doesn’t apply in this home. As founder of edgy design firm Buster + Punch, Massimo is able to indulge his love of decadent themes, working in collaboration with, among others, custom motorbike builder Boneshaker Choppers, which inspired the Buster + Punch debut collection.

Get the look The screen print hanging on the right of the wall, called Justina, is another work by Matthew Small and the gilt-framed print in the centre, called Sammy, is by Angelique Houtkamp, both from Nelly Duff. The Nude brass pendants are from the Hooked collection by Buster + Punch. Massimo made the bench. For a similar table, check out Alexander & Pearl’s Midnight design. Habitat sells sofas like this one. The original oak floor is treated with Osmo parquet stain in Pitch Black.

KITCHEN

The couple did up the flat on a shoestring, replacing the bathroom and kitchen with units built from basic materials in Massimo’s workshop.

Get the look The unfinished white oak and lacquered kitchen units with bespoke brass worktops are by Minale + Mann. The ceiling pendant light is from the Hooked collection by Buster + Punch. Find vintage brass kitchenalia at Below Stairs of Hungerford. Colonial Soldier sells antique wood skis.

The couple sawed a junk-shop table in half to make a breakfast bar and made the shelves out of vintage wooden skis.
