I Spent a Long Time Overlooking Pod Machines, but After Testing Nespresso's Vertuo Next, I Was Impressed — It's Easy-to-Use, Affordable, and, as an Ex-Barista
If you have a busy morning schedule but still want to enjoy a good, hot drink at home, here's why I recommend the Nespresso Vertuo Next pod machine
Once again, I was thoroughly impressed with Nespresso's pod technology when testing the Nespresso Vertuo Next machine. This is an appliance for those with a busier morning who still want a fabulous brew. You'll have to invest in pods and manage the increased waste, but it comes at a price and convenience level that is hard to beat.

I may be a dedicated espresso machine lover, but recently my head has been turned. I can no longer stand idle while pod machines are slandered, because they can, in fact, make a very decent cup of coffee. This week I tried the Nespresso Vertuo Next machine and my new-found love for a pod coffee was yet again confirmed. This is a device that prioritizes convenience and affordability without sacrificing flavor. And what's so bad about that?
Coffee pod machines, of course, aren't going to give you that barista-like coffee-making experience — there is no group head, portafilter, and typically no steaming wand. However, a thick crema layer and a range of drink choices in less than two minutes? That, they can do. The Nespresso Vertuo Next machine specifically utilizes Nespresso's advanced extraction technology, which I found elevated the crema and espresso shot quality.
In terms of what this machine can do, the Vertuo Next is pretty limited to what pods you buy to use. But if you're someone with a busy morning schedule who still wants to enjoy a hot drink at home, I'd highly recommend considering this appliance. More details on my reviewing experience and opinions on the Nespresso Vertuo Next machine, below.

Olivia Wolfe has been a design writer for Livingetc since 2024. Previously, Olivia worked in the coffee industry at multiple cafes, both in London and the United States. During this time, she took training-intensive courses at coffee roasteries where coffee beans are roasted, packed, and shipped. During these trainings, Olivia learned about different types of coffee beans, how region affects flavor, roasting methods, grinding methods for different brews, and the flavor profiles of coffee. Since being at Livingetc, Olivia has tested multiple coffee machines (and currently has five on her kitchen counter).
First Impressions
The sleek, matte black colorway looks incredibly stylish on the countertop.
First impression were a 'meets expectations' moment. This is not a negative notion, as the machine has a sleek, stylish design, but more so that what you see is what you get. It comes with the machine, the instruction manual and nothing more. So, you will have to factor in pods, milk-steaming devices, etc., as an extra cost. Luckily, Nespresso has a wide range of coffee pod options to shop.
This simplicity also works in favor of learning to use the appliance. This couldn't be an easier machine to use. All you do is plug the machine in, fill the water tank, pop a coffee pod in, and press start.
Plus, without a mess of extra bits and bobs, this machine won't take up too much room on your kitchen countertop. The Vertuo Next may not be as small as similar models like the Nespresso Vertuo Pop machine, but it's still great for smaller coffee nooks and counters.
Testing the Machine

As mentioned, using this machine is as simple as it gets. It's a two-step process to a creamy and smooth caffeinated drink. To start, I ordered a variety pod pack that included espresso shots, full drink sizes, and cold drink options (all in varying intensity levels). This allows you to have the most creative freedom over what kind of drink you want to help brighten your dark mornings.

To use the Vertuo Next, you simply place the pod into the top, lock it in place, and press the brewing button to start. One thing to note is that the top can be a little tricky to close. It's nothing too inconvenient; it just takes a firmer press to pop the pod and get the lid to lock.
My favorite feature? When your cup has brewed, and you reopen the top of the machine, the used coffee pod automatically discards into a bin at the back of the machine that you can empty once full. It makes disposing of your pods that much easier. But to keep the environment in mind, you might want to consider getting a tool like the Alessi pod crusher to separate the grounds from the aluminum before recycling.
Quality of Coffee

Now the most important question — what's the coffee quality? Again, I've been thoroughly impressed recently by the advancements in coffee pod flavor, and the Nespresso Vertuo Next did not disappoint.
As soon as the espresso shot begins brewing, you can see the caramel-colored crema coming out of the machine. However, I'd say I was slightly less impressed with the full-cup-sized pods. While it's convenient (especially if you're an americano lover), there tends to be a lot of foam after brewing.
The coffee is inarguably tasty, but you might still need to consider buying certain coffee machine accessories and accompaniments to make your Nespresso pods taste better.
Should You Buy the Nespresso Vertuo Next Machine?
This is what the machine looks like and what it comes with after unboxing.
If you are ready to invest in a pod machine, I'd definitely recommend this machine. It looks stylish on the counter, doesn't take up too much space, comes in a range of colors, and is easy to use. Plus, yes, the coffee tastes great.
The main difference between the Nespresso Vertuo Next machine and the brand's other simplistic models is the size and style of this device. The Vertuo Next has a larger water tank, a taller, slimmer build, and comes in four sleek colors (dark and light gray, black, and white).
The Nespresso Vertuo Next is for the busy coffee lover — someone who values variety, convenience, and affordability.
Looking for something that is similar in price range but a little more hands-on? I'd suggest trying the De'Longhi Dedica Duo. It is a traditional espresso machine (steaming wand included) with a size that's built for apartments and smaller spaces.
