That’s why I don’t think a compact sofa is simply a smaller sofa. The good ones are much smarter with their proportions: slimmer arms give more space back to the seat, shallower frames leave you room to move, and raised bases let you see more of the floor, which instantly makes the whole piece feel lighter.

And this is where I always bring out the masking tape. Before you buy a sofa, mark out the footprint on the floor and look at the space around it, not just whether it technically fits. Can you comfortably get past the coffee table? Is there still room for a side table or an armchair? "We always seek a subtle balance between bold choices and quiet restraint, aesthetics, and functionality," she explains. When I worked as a design consultant in New York, I’d often have clients come in with one sofa already in mind: the famous cloud-style sofa. Deep, down-filled and wonderfully slouchy, it looked like the ultimate place to sink into. What people didn’t always realize was how much upkeep came with that look. Enter the Delta 5 Modular Sofa from King Living, a sofa that's bold and confident in its design, flexible in its seating style, and holds secret compartments for hidden storage.

If you're unfamiliar with King Living as somewhere to buy a sofa, the Australian luxury furniture brand made its London debut a handful of years ago, and it has since pleased the many design enthusiasts who have their ears on the ground for the arrival of global interior labels.

The Livingetc team had already been down to the central showroom by Tottenham Court Road to do their testing for the best King Living sofas before the release of the Delta 5, but editor Hugh Metcalf popped back to run this one through its paces, too. Here's an idea of what to expect.

In fact, our pick of this year’s top sofa trends highlights this move brilliantly. “Color might be an instinctive way to make a statement, but we’re now seeing impact coming through form and shape instead,” says Sophie Chapman from The Vawdrey House. “This is a versatile design choice, especially compared to choosing a sofa that immediately demands attention.”

Are ‘Statement’ Sofas Over?

There’s always going to be a time and a place for a showstopping sofa — we’ve even compiled a list of sofas worth designing your home around. What increasingly makes these pieces unique, though, isn’t their vibrant color or standout pattern but their silhouettes. “For a long time, a statement sofa meant a bold color or an unexpected print,” says interior designer Heather Hilliard. “Now people are asking for something sculptural.”

Rather than making upholstery the focal point, a shapely sofa lets its form take center stage in your living room. “Today’s statement sofa could have a deep curve, an unexpected arm, or a low profile,” says Heather. “In my opinion, the silhouette is now doing the work that color used to do. At first glance, you might not notice the shade of the sofa!”

This shift away from colorful upholstery is a common thread in living room projects, where design features are becoming less ‘look at me’ and more nuanced. Statement sofas haven’t ended, then, but the definition of what makes them special has changed.

“While color still has a place, we’re seeing a move toward quieter palettes, whether the statement comes from form rather than finish,” explains Sophie Rastrick, interior designer at A.LONDON. “A sofa should anchor a room through its presence, and a distinctive silhouette feels elegant and enduring.”

Why Does Sofa Shape Matter?

Your sofa is about so much more than just looks — finding the right design impacts how comfortable you feel as well as how you use your home. “Sofa shape actually influences how people live and behave inside a space,” explains Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of K’Arte Design.

As one of the largest pieces of furniture in your living room, don’t underestimate the role your sofa’s silhouette plays in establishing the mood. “Soft curves create warmth and encourage conversation, while clean architectural lines bring structure and calm,” the interior designer says.

Think about scale and proportion, too, as these factors are linked with shape and influence whether a room feels open and airy or more intimate. “Low profiles create a greater sense of openness and allow architecture to breathe, while curves tend to soften interiors and introduce a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. For a casual lifestyle, look for generous proportions with softened edges and deep seats rather than overly ornate detailing,” adds Katerina.

Certain designs will work better in certain room shapes, so it's important to select not just the right size, but the shape and style of sofa that matches your room shape.

In the living room project above, New York-based interior design studio AREA opted for a tailored curve. “This floating sofa creates a room within the larger space and gently draws people together, while still keeping everything open and approachable,” explains Janine Carendi MacMurray.

When selecting the type of sofa you want, using a more interesting sofa shape than, say, a conventional boxy one, relates differently to other pieces in your room. A more shapely design makes individual side tables, armchairs, and other accessories feel connected to an overall scheme.

“Your sofa’s silhouette defines the way a room is experienced,” says Janine. “A sculptural design speaks to other pieces in the space, holding its own without overwhelming the room.”

Are Sculptural Sofas Here to Stay?

Whereas certain colors and specific patterns can come and go fairly regularly, a considered sofa silhouette tends to last far longer than upholstery trends — as long as you steer clear of anything too wacky. “The sofas that are likely to stand the test of time have well-balanced proportions rather than bold, exaggerated features,” explains Sophie Chapman from The Vawdrey House.

Indeed, the shapes favored by interior designers in 2026 aren’t exactly brand new. “Curved sofas and lower profiles feel very relevant now,” says Bari Jerauld, founder of Blank Slate Studio. “They have also been around for many decades, so I feel that they will endure and won’t date when installed in the right setting. Opt for a shape that works with the style of your home, and it could last a lifetime.”

As a sofa can be an investment piece, considering its longevity is key. By prioritizing shape over color, you’re allowing your sofa to adapt as interior design trends change and act as an anchor no matter what shade your walls are painted or which cushions, rugs, or pieces of art you’ve placed around it.

“Focus on the sofa shape that suits your home,” agrees A.LONDON’s Sophie Rastrick. “Consider the architecture of your property and choose a design that complements its character. This will make sure it works as your home evolves.”

Which Sofa Shapes Are Trending in 2026?

Whether you’re shopping for one of the new sofa designs to know, or prefer to stick with a classic, make sure shape is just as important in your decision-making. While the statement sofa might not be disappearing entirely, interior designers are placing far more emphasis on silhouettes rather than color.

I vividly remember my mother teaching me to make my bed when I was younger. She showed me how to tuck in the corners of the sheets and fold down the top of the duvet, so it looked orderly and more "put together". But perhaps the most fun part to learn as a kid was the karate chop method for perfectly fluffing the pillows. I was dumbfounded at the time — how does this fun trick make the pillows look so perfect?

For those of you who may not be so familiar, the karate chop is exactly as it sounds. You place a cushion on a bed, chair, or sofa and karate chop the top center to create a pronounced divot. Melbourne-based interior stylist and design educator, Loui Burke explains, "Like many styling techniques, the original intention was to make a cushion look less rigid and more relaxed and lived-in." And for a while, it did just that.

However, like many easy decorating hacks and styling tricks, the karate chop method evolved into something more rigid, formal, and too contrived. Rather than your house looking effortless, a karate-chopped cushion begins to read as amateur. So, is the karate chop method done for good? Or can this style be revitalized to meld with contemporary interior design trends? All that and more below.

The Evolution and Downfall of the Karate Chop Method for Fluffing Pillows

As mentioned, the original intention was to make a cushion look less rigid and more relaxed and lived-in. But as Loui Burke explains, "It was then adopted by the masses and became completely lost in translation. Instead of looking relaxed, cushions were positioned stiffly upright with an exaggerated chop, creating the exact opposite effect."

It almost became a case of, 'It isn’t finished unless you chop it,' when you were never meant to notice the detail at all. The cushion was meant to look inviting and as though it genuinely belongs in the space, but the exaggerated chop defeats its original purpose. "Now it looks amateur," adds Loui. "It suggests someone has picked up a design tip without considering the rhyme or reason behind intentionally disrupting a perfectly shaped cushion."

The only time a pronounced cushion chop is really functional is "when you want to leave a visual signal that a room has been cleaned and tidied, much like vacuum lines in a carpet." For instance, you might see a formal chop in a luxurious hotel bedroom, as it shows elegance and perfect tidiness. While you might not always want such prestige in your everyday home.

Those strong visual signals say, 'I've been here. I've done this.' "They turn a comfortable room into evidence of a completed task, and a clean and orderly home should not be mistaken for a put-together, styled home," says Loui. Let the space relax and feel good.

Styling cushions doesn't need to become a formula that gets overdone; pillows and throws are meant to add layers, texture, and comfort to a room. "We don't think it's necessarily out of style, but we do feel like everyone is in a more organic lifestyle world right now," say Jordyn and Barry, the masterminds behind Brooklyn-based studio, The Brownstone Boys. "Homes don't need to be so crisp and polished; they are more lived-in, and we love that people are embracing that," they say.

So while the exaggerated karate chop is a little too formulaic for the 2026 home, there are still ways to bring it back to its natural roots.

How to Style Cushions in Contemporary Homes

First and foremost, there are a few ways you can style a pillow. And in terms of the contemporary karate chop, Loui clarifies, "There is a difference between a chop and a light tap." And the latter is what you should aim for when arranging throw pillows on a couch or bed. "A gentle tap is perfectly fine if it helps the cushion look relaxed and lived-in," says Loui. Otherwise, prop the cushion up naturally and let the fabric and design be seen. So, relaxed cushions get a tap; formal cushions should simply be propped upright.

And further, a pillow today should be styled based on where it lives in the home. For instance, on a sofa or seating, "I generally lean cushions at a slight angle. That's it. If it needs a gentle tap to relax it, give it one. After sitting against it, fluff it back into shape and lean it again," says Loui. If the fluff feels unnatural, you may not even need a throw pillow on your sofa.

On a bed, there is a little more styling leeway, as there are typically more pillows to style (six pillows on a bed is the designer sweet spot, while some bedrooms are more minimal).

At the moment, the approach is very much 'less is more.' However, layering in design can bring your pillow arrangement to life without feeling too 'stuffy'. On a bed, you can introduce a lumbar, bolster or pebble-shaped cushion instead of lining up five standard 45-by-45-centimeter squares. Rather than a formal chop, "I position cushions on a bed slightly more upright and straight," says Loui. "Do what works for the room, but avoid repeatedly using the same size and shape," adds Loui.

Plus, "Layering with different textures and materials is another way to get the best out of your pillows. We personally love a really versatile pillow that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing," say Jordyn and Barry of The Brownstone Boys.

The cushion insert will also make an enormous difference in how often a pillow needs 'tapping', a chop, or a re-fluff. "Use a feather insert or a lofty fiber alternative, such as corn fiber or hi-loft fill, that mimics the movement and softness of feather and down. Rigid synthetic inserts are useful for seat cushions, but they rarely create the relaxed shape you want from a decorative cushion," explains Loui.

Below are a few different throw pillows that would either look great with a relaxed 'tap' in place of the chop, or that help you ditch the karate chop method altogether.

So to sum it up, today's karate chop should always be more of a 'tap', and if the tap isn't working, then simply let the pillow talk for itself by standing it upright, or let it lean at a relaxed angle. "I know some people will think it's silly to care this much about a cushion, but the alternative really is that simple: lean it naturally or don't have it there," Loui adds.

Unlike blush, which often feels quite sweet, this shade has earthier undertones that create depth.”

As with any nuanced color, these characteristics are key. “What distinguishes the hue from traditional beige or greige is its subtle red undertone,” explains Megan Brown. “This gives it a soft rose infusion that introduces warmth without ever becoming overtly pink. The effect is a sense of organic depth that feels grounded, authentic, and quietly luxurious.”

Depending on the light, the color reads as soft, earthy or even lustrous, with these qualities making peige a versatile neutral that works beautifully where out-and-out pink just wouldn’t. “There’s a sensuality to it, but it sits very comfortably within both masculine and feminine interiors,” says Megan.

Whenever we notice a new color trend popping up in designer projects and across furniture showrooms, the first question we always ask is — why now? For peige sofas, the answer is twofold. Very few colors bridge the gap between ‘soft’ and ‘rich’ quite so successfully, while the hue also works well to highlight the weave and texture of different materials.

“People are shifting towards interiors that feel warm and more inviting, and peige does both,” believes the New York-based interior designer Lisa Staton. “As a sofa takes up so much space, it has a huge impact on the overall mood of a living room. Choosing one in this shade brings softness without demanding to be the room’s focal point.”

“Clients are increasingly drawn to colors that feel comforting,” agrees Marea Clark. “Peige has much more life than traditional beige or cool-toned grays, bringing complexity that softens a room. The pinky undertones act almost like a filter, making everything around it feel a little richer.”

The success of a peige sofa lies as much in how it feels as in how it looks. “We always begin with the fabric choice rather than color alone, as texture, handle, and the way a textile reflects light are what ultimately determine how the color reads,” explains interior designer Megan Brown. “As a studio, we naturally gravitate towards bouclé, brushed linen, and soft velvets as they best reveal complexity.”

Importantly, not all pinky-beige sofas automatically qualify for the sofa trend — color really does matter when searching for the perfect peige sofa. “The undertone is probably the most important thing to make sure your sofa stays timeless,” reveals Sophie Garland. “Lean towards warm clay, subtle red, and terracotta rather than anything too sugary. Always look at large fabric samples in daylight and throughout the evening before making a decision. The color should end up being incredibly versatile.”

Once you’ve selected your sofa, consider how it relates to everything else in your space. “Peige pairs naturally with chocolate browns, purply grays, and soft whites, but it plays well with almost any colors as long as the scheme stays warm,” suggests Marea Clark.

Rustic timbers, woven textures, and glossy finishes will bring a sense of movement alongside the shade, while harder materials can anchor everything together. “Natural stone and aged brass will keep the overall palette grounded and allow your sofa to fit seamlessly into the composition,” says Marea.

"I have been a huge fan of Castlery sofas because of how durable and comfortable they are, and their new Ollie sofa did not disappoint," reads one. "The sofa is incredibly comfortable, the chenille fabric has a nice, subtle texture, yet feels so soothing when sitting, and I love the ample storage space," writes another.

A sofa occupies so much visual space that the color you pick greatly affects the room's atmosphere. Going the safe route and treating it as a neutral placeholder can be a missed design opportunity, while a bold trend may be a choice you tire of quickly. So what's the happy medium? I find that it always helps to start by identifying the colors you either don't like, that compete negatively with your scheme, or that feel a bit outdated.

It's not that any sofa color trend is inherently 'outdated', but a few are often used without enough consideration. For instance, my mind instantly goes to a forest green sofa — it's often labeled as dated 'millennial' green because it is considered an overused or 'safe' choice. However, when used with intention, forest green is a sofa color with staying power and can look really elevated. It's all about navigating the fine line of sofa colors that make a statement and elevate a scheme, without overwhelming it or blending in.

Rather than shouting or disappearing, interior designer Andrew Griffiths says, "I like a sofa to anchor the room. It doesn't need to shout, but it should bring depth and character. When a sofa color is selected to be inoffensive or non-committal, the room has nothing to say." So, to put all of this food for thought into tangible advice, below are four sofa colors designers say to be wary of in 2026, and what to look for instead.

1. Dove Gray and 'Greige'

Gray has become quite the taboo color in interior design trends in the past 10 years. We are still fighting the aftermath of the monochromatic, go-with-anything, gray interiors of the 2010s. And unfortunately, cool dove grays are still a tricky sofa color choice.

Andrew Griffith explains, "While choosing gray makes sense to a lot of people as a safe answer to 'what if I don't love this in five years', but that caution is exactly what makes a space forgettable." Dove Gray became the default 'safe' choice for so long that it can leave a room feeling flat unless it's paired with a very rich material palette. "Done badly, and it reads as corporate and cold — suited to an office lobby, not home," Andrew.

There are a few ways to make a gray sofa feel cozier and colors that work similarly in a room without feeling so bland. First of all, decorating with gray will always be more effective with a warm undertone — think taupes and rich charcoals. These make the room feel more inviting.

"I actually owned a gray sofa myself," says interior designer Georgina Wilson. "Seven years ago they felt like a timeless, safe choice, but I've found mine has aged in a way that feels flat and lifeless. The color seems to lose warmth over time, and instead of developing character, it just starts to look a little tired." A richer, warmer fabric with more depth will ground a room.

Or ditch gray altogether and go for a new neutral more in line with today's color trends. "Deep, earthy, slightly unexpected neutrals: aubergine, chocolate brown, rust, inky blue or a warm ochre. These read as considered because they behave like neutrals in a room — they ground a space and let you build around them — while still having real depth and warmth," says Andrew.

2. Out of Place Purple

Purple sofas, especially the aubergine variety, have definitely gained attention in the design world over the past year — they feel unexpected, yet rich and comforting in hue. But it's the question of whether these purple couches will be a trend that's expected to fall as quickly as it rose.

On the one hand, a moody aubergine sofa, when done well, is the ultimate style indicator. "The plum velvet sofa from our Parklands project is a good example: it's dramatic against a pale wall but never feels like a 'statement piece' you'll tire of, because the color itself is quiet in tone even though it's rich in depth," explains Andrew. Such a bold sofa color is all about intention.

However, it's worth proceeding with caution. Georgina says, "While it can look striking initially, it's a color that many people tend to tire of fairly quickly." And that is the last thing you want when planning your living room seating arrangements. If you are going to go purple, make sure you choose it because you love it and because it goes well with your scheme. Otherwise, it can feel random, and the color will date quicker.

Because a sofa is such a large investment, "I prefer colors that I know I'll still enjoy living with many years later," says Georgina. Perhaps a deep red will have more longevity since red is a primary color, or a brown leather sofa can feel very classic and stylish when done well.

3. White as a Safety Net

Okay, it feels like stark whites always make the outdated colors list. They tend to read as "cold, impractical, and disconnected from the warmer, more layered interiors people tend to feel most comfortable in," explains Andrew. And a stark white sofa falls directly into those categories — it's often used as an afterthought color, it can create a jarring contrast in otherwise layered schemes, and frankly, it's hard to keep clean.

So while picking a white sofa just because you want something neutral is an outdated design choice, white as a sofa color in general doesn't have to be. As Andrew says, "Color is only one part of the story though — texture, finish and shape have just as much impact." So, it's more about how you incorporate a white sofa.

"My biggest controversial take is probably that I absolutely love a white sofa, even with a busy household, three children, a husband and a constant stream of guests," says Georgina. "I've owned several white sofas over the years, from an IKEA Ektorp through to more premium pieces, and I've genuinely loved every one of them. To me, white is one of the most timeless sofa colors you can choose," she adds.

This is because such a neutral color allows the architecture of the sofa to shine, works beautifully with changing interiors, and never really dates. Plus, slipcovers also make white a far more practical option than many people assume, allowing you to refresh the look whenever needed. "The key is making sure the sofa itself has beautiful proportions and a comfortable, sculptural form because the simplicity of white really highlights the shape," says Georgina.

4. Orange

Lastly, the bolder you get with your sofa color, the more of a gamble you are taking. While it's always a good idea to show off your personal style, picking a bold or energetic color for such a staple piece often leads to a design choice that will date quickly. And orange is one of the biggest offenders.

Georgina says, "Perhaps it's my most personal take, but I'm a hard 'no' when it comes to orange velour sofas. It instantly reminds me of the 1980s." Once loved for its warmth and natural-leaning hue, orange can read quite harsh in interiors. Especially as color in 2026 moves towards something more personalized and grounded. "While there are always exceptions, I find it dominates a room and makes it much harder to create a space that feels calm and enduring," says Georgina.

Instead, a caramel-colored tan or subtle yellow sofa will age more gracefully. Andrew advises looking for "Something where the color itself is quiet in tone even though it's rich in depth." For example, Andrew styled an ochre linen sofa at his Barbican project: "It's warm rather than loud. It’s an optimistic color, but still understated enough to live with for years."

"I always start with the atmosphere we want to create rather than the color itself. A sofa should relate to the materials, the quality of light, and the mood of the room, not follow what's fashionable," says Andrew.

We landed in Lyon just as France was celebrating a World Cup win. Sitting at the iconic Café Comptoir Abel in the heart of the city, we listened to cheers drifting in through the open windows. I found myself wondering how many people watching from the apartments above were doing so from the unmistakable folds of a Togo, one of France’s most iconic sofa designs.

There's a reason it's on my mind. I'm visiting France on a fact-finding mission, and the next morning, we left the city behind and drove just an hour away east to Briord and Montagnieu — two small, quiet towns where the story of Ligne Roset, creators of the Togo and many other design classics, really unfolds.

Our first stop was Studio 1860, the brand’s bright and welcoming showroom. Walking through the space with Olivier Roset didn’t feel like a guided tour. It felt more like catching up over coffee and opening a family photo album, with each piece revealing a little secret from the brand’s past that’s always set it apart.

Togo is the perfect example. Dreamed up in 1973, a slouchy, all-foam sofa with no frame and no fuss, a cloud-like seat that broke all the old rules. With more than a million sold of them sold, it remains a reference point when considering what separates the best sofas to buy from those that simply look good for a moment. But standing in Studio 1860, you realize the Togo isn’t a one-off. It’s part of a much bigger story about taking risks, collaborating with designers, and always asking, ‘What if we did things differently?’

“The idea is to expand the storytelling of our history and really make it a destination where you can view the archive like a book or even better, a museum,” Olivier told me.

And the Togo might be its most compelling chapter. We know the slouched silhouette and unmistakable 1970s ease, but seeing it within the archive revealed how much of its story goes beyond the shape. As a stylist, I arrived eager to see the craft behind each fold; what I left with was a sense of why some designs endure, shaping the way we live, and what it really means to bring a piece like this home.

The Effortless Slouch Redefined Living

The Togo arrived just as the living room was becoming less formal and far more central to everyday family life. By the 1980s, French homes were increasingly organised around television, conversation and longer evenings spent together, with the arrival of colour TV and video recorders making the room feel more lived in than ever. Seen in that context, the Togo’s low, enveloping form feels less like a stylistic rebellion and more like a design that understood where domestic life was heading. There’s an effortless, lived-in charm to the Togo that continues to intrigue today. That signature low-slung profile immediately changes the energy of a space — suddenly, the room feels less formal and more inviting. Its modularity is an interior stylist’s secret weapon: whether you’re after a laid-back reading nook or a sprawling zone for friends to gather, it flexes to fit your life. No wonder, decades on, the Togo remains the go-to to shift how a room looks and feels.

Seeing it inside the Roset family’s preserved home, and yes, we were lucky enough to be invited in, made that shift feel tangible.

For me, that is what separates a piece that belongs to an era from one that goes on to define it.

The iconic folds are designed with intention

The iconic folds, it turns out, are as intentional as they are inviting. At the factory, we watched as a master upholsterer began to dress a two-seater armless Togo in Kyoto Gold leather. Every movement was purposeful and a choreography honed over more than a decade. Each fold is shaped and secured with blind tufting — a subtle but brilliant detail that makes all the difference. You really do feel it when you sit down: that sense of genuine craft, right down to the last detail. It is a reminder that how long a sofa lasts has as much to do with the craftsmanship beneath its surface as the material we see.

The process begins long before any sewing. On the factory floor with Asa Hirst, Ligne Roset’s UK Director, we watched hides move under scanners that spot even the smallest flaw. Technology provided accuracy, but human judgment still determined how each material could be used to its fullest potential. “As sustainability becomes ever more essential, we’re committed to repurposing and reusing every viable piece,” Asa said. It’s the kind of care you notice in every Togo.

Icon status hasn’t changed its making

Now being carried forward by a fifth generation, the company has grown without letting its most recognisable designs rely on reputation alone. Keeping production in house means the care behind each piece is still visible, from the first cut of foam to the final hand finished detail.

For me, that was the real lesson in longevity. A famous name may draw you in, but lasting value comes from continuing to uphold the standards that made the design matter in the first place.

If you missed the newsflash, decorating with warm neutral colors is very much hot in 2026 (and beyond). And these neutral color swatches (like cream, clay, and cinnamon) extend way beyond the paint on your walls. Instead, according to Monika, it's best to choose sofas in these timeless shades as they help to create a luxurious finish.

“Shades like stone, oatmeal, beige, mushroom, chocolate brown, and earthy greens are replacing cool grays,” Monika says. But beige doesn't mean boring. In fact, it's far from it. “These colors feel timeless and work well in most homes,” the expert adds.

2. Natural Fabrics

Color is often the first design decision weighed up when considering, well… any new interior design purchase — and understandably so. There’s no doubt that the color of your couch can set the tone for your entire living room, but Monika says that the right fabrics are just as important for creating a polished seating space.

The key question is what couch fabrics ooze a luxurious look? “Natural-looking fabrics like luxe chenille, bouclé, boucle/chenille mix, velvet, linen/linen mix, and quality leather instantly make a sofa feel more luxurious,” Monika says. “[That’s because] luxury is all about quality and simplicity,” she adds.

Louise McGarry, creative director of Studio Braw, agrees, suggesting that it’s worth choosing natural fibers like heavyweight linen, mohair, or a "beautifully-tailored" wool blend over anything synthetic or overly shiny, as the latter can "look and feel cheaper" no matter how good the silhouette is. “Fabric is where you really feel the difference,” Louise says. “A natural, tactile textile drapes and ages beautifully, developing character over time, whereas cheaper fabrics tend to look tired quickly.”

Maria Ramirez, founder of BB Interiors, echoes this point, stating: “A truly luxurious sofa should tell the story of the home it lives in, not look exactly the same ten years later." According to the interior designer, that's because natural materials have "depth and movement" that synthetic ones "struggle to imitate".

3. Curved Shapes and Architectural Silhouettes

When it comes to the shape of your couch, the world of sofa shops is your oyster. In 2026, there are all different types of sofas you should know about before you settle on your chosen seating arrangement, from sectional sofas and modular options to loveseats and motion sofas.

But the key to making your seating space look high-end? Opting for sofas that have curve appeal. So when it comes to curved sofas vs straight sofas, in this instance, curved options win every time.

“The sofas that feel most luxurious in 2026 are moving away from rigid, boxy forms towards softer, more architectural silhouettes,” Maria says. “Gentle curves are becoming increasingly popular, not because they are fashionable, but because they beautifully bridge traditional and contemporary design. That transitional quality is what gives them longevity. They feel just as at home in a Georgian townhouse as they do in a modern apartment, which is exactly what timeless design should do.”

4. A Generous Scale in Proportion

“The details I always notice on a truly well-made sofa are, first, the depth and proportion,” Louise says. “The best pieces are generously scaled but never bulky, with a seat depth that's been carefully considered for how the sofa will actually be used, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. For example, a conversational sofa will be firmer and shallower vs a sofa for a snug.”

Which is why Louise says it’s all about restraint and precision. “A generous and well-proportioned frame signals confidence in the design,” she adds.

5. The 'Hardware'

There’s no denying that when choosing from the different sofa design styles, comfort is key. But a sofa is so much more than a space just to sit. So it’s not just the shape, fabric, and color worth paying attention to. The legs, base, and edging will add to the high-end look.

“Luxury is almost always found in the details,” suggests Maria. “A beautifully piped edge, a subtle flange seam, hand-finished upholstery, solid timber feet, or perfectly tailored cushions all communicate quality without demanding attention.”

But instead of plucking for anything too trend-driven, Maria suggests picking a sofa that puts quiet luxury and elevated craftsmanship at the forefront. "The most expensive-looking sofas tend to have one beautiful detail executed exceptionally well, rather than five competing for attention," she notes. "Ultimately, beautifully executed craftsmanship creates visual calm because every detail feels considered."

The one thing I love to see in a small living room is an impactful sofa. As probably the most important piece of furniture in this space, it's a chance to show off your eye for design. "Don’t think you’re sacrificing seating space by losing those 30cm — it often means you can add an extra armchair to the floorplan instead." He adds that price tags aren't everything, either. "A good sofa doesn't have to be expensive; it's how it feels that counts," he says.

1. Lilli Curved Sofa, Heal's

When working on this duplex in North London, designer Lucy Goldbart wanted to focus on curves, connecting the arched architecture to the furniture. The Lilli sofa from Heal's was a perfect choice, as cozy as it is considered.

"This space was so large that it lent itself to being divided into two areas," says Lucy. "We wanted to have an area where you could sit and have drinks and look out to the garden, as well as a more central spot for entertaining."

She was drawn to the simplicity of the Lilli, with no edges or fussy details. "Instead of over-decorating, I wanted this home to be about both sight lines — what you could see through each archway — and about little cozy corners," she says.

2. Togo Sofa, Ligne Roset

"We wanted to use objects and furniture that framed the most interesting areas, drawing the eye to make you look at them more," says interior designer Yoko Kloeden of her scheme for this living room. And nothing frames a room more than the iconic Togo sofa by Ligne Roset.

It's a couch so popular that at times the waitlist for a new one has been over a year long. It's a total tone-setter, its iconic shape dominating any space it's in, saying that this is a room you can get comfortable in, where you don't have to stand on ceremony. 3. Saturday Sofa, Sofa.com

Designer Christian Bense is known for his elegant, refined rooms, but as he pointed out before, not every single sofa has to be expensive.

"I love Sofa.com’s Saturday sofa," he says, of the gray sofa seen above in a living room he has designed. "It is fully break-downable, which means you can get it into homes that have tight corners and corridors, and better than that, it's super comfortable, too. I do believe every sofa should always have feather down in its pillows."

4. Camaleonda Sofa, B&B Italia

Certain iconic furniture pieces get used so often by the designers we love that they become part of the tapestry of the Livingetc look. And B&B Italia's iconic Camaleonda sofa is just the piece. Our favorite designers love it, and it crops up in at least one house we feature in almost every issue.

Designer Amy Stoddart chose this burgundy style for the snug of a recent project. "It's such a great design classic, recognizable but timeless," she says. "It's a comfortable statement piece." Here, she had this one upholstered in burgundy to match the Viola marble used elsewhere, and it's so easy to make it personal that it never gets old.

5. Pietro Corner Sofa, OKA

Designing an apartment for an American client moving to London, Lisa Mettis of Born and Bred Studio made it her mission to include as many British brands as possible.

That included OKA, the furniture retailer known for its decorative details that couldn't be any more British if it tried. She chose the Pietro Corner Sofa for this reception room because, despite the color palette, which shows up everything, "we chose this sofa because the removable covers made it practical for a family with a child and a dog," Lisa says. "While the elegant shape meant it still felt refined rather than overly casual."

6. Serpentine Sofa, Vladimir Kagan

Designer Portia Fox was creating an elegant entertaining lounge in a home where the color palette was pared back, and curves were a big feature. Vladimir Kagan's iconic Serpentine sofa felt like a natural fit.

"The shape of it is so beautiful," she says, explaining how it worked in a multi-use space. "The smokiness of the rug evokes more of an evening-y entertaining feel, but by keeping the room light and airy, it can be used for quiet reading in the daytime as well."

7. Squisharoo Sofa, Loaf

When Anahita Rigby was designing a home for a multi-generational family, she had to think about everyone from grandparents down to children. That meant picking furniture that suited everybody's needs, that wasn't too formal or grown-up, but that wouldn't alienate the adults either.

"This sofa from Loaf was just right," she says of the Squisheroo Sofa, shown in the living room she designed, above. "Deep enough to sink into but not so deep that the elders couldn’t get back up." Plus, it folds out into a sofa bed.

8. Chester Moon Sofa, Baxter

As an exception to the rule of this piece, Australian decorator Simone Haag didn't choose this sofa to design this room around — in fact, she inherited the sofa from the architects who had started off the scheme, and then had to find a way to design around it. Thankfully, it didn't prove too tricky.

"This was an exercise in working with existing pieces, and figuring out how to re-route," says Simone. "So I approached it in the same way anyone might who was trying to update their home without totally overhauling it — looking for ways to add to the existing curations, to layer textures and patterns, not just to work with what I inherited with it, but to bring out a more artistic flavor."

With the sofa already in a rich gold tone, subtle "lifting moments" came from the gold flecks in the rug she added.

9. Aline Serpentine Sofa, Soho Home

With so many homes now being open plan, designers use furniture to help zone large areas instead of walls. That has led to the rise in curved sofas, which create cocooning spaces in corners that help clearly demarcate the lounging space from, say, the kitchen or dining room.

That was the thinking behind McLaren.Excell's choice of the Aline Serpentine sofa from Soho Home for this modern, large and open-plan extension. "There had to be a sense of togetherness," co-founder Rob Excell says of the rear of a home that now includes a kitchen, dining area, kids' homework corner, and living space. "It had to not just be another open-plan space," he adds, and Soho Home's sofa was rounded enough to direct the focus of this part of the room solely on itself, drawing the people who sit on it together.

10. Marenco Sofa, Arflex

Working on a 1970s home in Malibu, design studio LALA Reimagined wanted to preserve its very 1970s-ness. "Decked out predominantly in American Cypress wood, we knew we had to maintain the integrity of the house," co-founder Lia McNairy says. "You know, it was a challenge — we love wallpaper and paint, but we didn’t want to touch all that beautiful wood. Nor detract from that incredible view."

Instead, they chose furniture that felt as important and considered as the architecture but didn't detract from it — the Marenco sofa by Arflex being a prime example. "We felt that restraint was the way to best respect the environment and that incredible view," Lia says of the edges that have just enough of a flick to be interesting, but will never overwhelm any space it's in.

It helps to anchor the room when you know what the largest piece will be, and the sofa is a perfect place to start. By getting that right you can ensure everything else just slots in around it. Let's face it, a truly comfortable sofa bed is a little bit of a unicorn — its dual-function nature often means sacrificing structure and material (and, to be honest, style to some degree) to create a sofa that turns into a bed. Some certainly outclass others, and by testing sofa beds side by side, it's an easy comparison.

That was my plan in evaluating which John Lewis sofa beds are best. However, you'll probably find, like me, that not all John Lewis stores stock models of its sofa beds, so unless you can get into the largest of stores, it's hard to try before you buy. With that in mind, I spent time visiting a few stores to test John Lewis sofas-turned-beds, including the Oxford Street flagship (with helpful demonstrations from the floor staff) to find my favorites.

Though, to be clear, they have to satisfy two criteria: style and comfort. It won't be included in my top picks unless it hits both. Unfortunately, I couldn't find some of my favorite sofa bed designs from John Lewis in stores to try, namely the Innovation Living Cozy Pad Sofa Bed and the Duplet Day Bed, so if you were looking at these two stylish designs, you might still have to pop one of them in your basket and hope for the best (though I can vouch for their style). Otherwise, these are the John Lewis sofa beds I'd actually consider buying.

For clarity, John Lewis not only stocks a range of its own-design sofa beds but also designs by the specialist sofa-bed brand Innovation Living, as well as Swyft and Swoon. I've included my picks from these brands in this list, too.

I've ranked each sofa bed by how it compares to like-for-like sofa beds, too. For example, any sofa bed with a pull-out mattress is undoubtedly more comfortable for sleep (and sitting on) than one that uses the couch cushions for a mattress, but it really depends on what style you like, how easy you want it to be to pull out, and where the sofa bed is being used. A guest bedroom that needs to sleep your elderly parents when they come to visit has different requirements than a teenager who has friends round to crash now and again.

So, these were my favorite John Lewis sofa beds from the selection I tested.

Swyft's Sofa Beds

Best Fold-Down Sofa Bed
My Score: 4/5

My overall favorite was the Model 04 from Swyft's sofa bed range, but I've tested the whole collection of sofa beds from Swyft on offer from John Lewis before, and they all stack up to around the same basic premise, packaged up in different styles.

Swyft's sofa beds are generally all fold-down styles, which use the sofa's seat cushions as the mattress for the sofa bed, but Swyft has managed to get the balance right between sitting comfort and sleeping with its range. The sofas are on the medium-firm side, but with a double layer of foam and pocket springs, it feels comfortable to lie on. As with most sofa beds, I'm still going to recommend a mattress topper, and Swyft actually offers its own ones to fit the sofa beds.

All the Swyft sofa beds disguise their double function pretty well. The Model 04 from John Lewis is great for a mid-century style look, but the newer Model 12 is probably my favorite classic style.

Barbican

Best Mattress Sofa Bed
My Score: 4/5

A sofa bed with a pull-out mattress is generally going to be more comfortable for both sitting and sleeping, as each element can be better considered for the job it has to do, rather than trying to do the best of both worlds.

John Lewis has a few pull-out mattress sofas, but the John Lewis range Barbican sofa bed has sort of triumphed by default. The Slumber isn't comfortable enough to sit on for your living room, and the Camden and Charlotte II's styles are a little too dated for a Livingetc home.

The Barbican, again, has that inoffensive mid-century style that works for a lot of homes. I found it has a softer-feeling seat and a slightly firmer back, but it's high, supportive, and comfortable to sit on. I tried the sofa in the Connie Grey Aquaclean and found the material quite firm and unrelenting — good if you want durability, but less loungey — but the sofa comes in a wider range of fabrics, made to order, including softer chenilles and velvets.

Linear

Best Budget Sofa Bed
My Score: 3/5

I get it, a sofa bed in the £1,500-£2,000 price range isn't for every situation, especially if you're adding it to a kid's room or playroom. Budget sofa beds can be hit or miss, but you can be a little more forgiving with their qualities, within reason.

My pick? John Lewis' Linear sofa bed. It's a fold-down bed that comes in at just under £700 (or a little more if you choose a velvet). It has a very small range of fabric choices, but each of them is stylish.

It's almost a little more futon-y in style, but it feels a little more sprung and full than some of the alternatives I tried. Again, it's not a sofa bed for your living room necessarily, but a good, affordable choice if you need to add an extra spot for guests to your home.

Cubed 140

Best Small Sofa Bed
My Score: 3/5

Lots of John Lewis' sofa beds are small-space friendly, without arms, for example, or in smaller, two-person styles. The smallest, however, is the Innovation Living Cubed 160, and it has enough about its design to be one of my favorites from the range.

It's a bouncy seat, which I don't mind, and a slightly more dorm-room-esque sofa bed style, but it still feels elevated. What sells me on it is the clever design that folds out to a much larger mattress than its initial footprint suggests. It's a little more complicated to fold out than some, but not tricky per se.

One complaint? I found the fabric a little coarse. I'm sure it'll be durable, but it wasn't my favorite feeling if you're thinking of spending many a night sitting on this particular sofa bed.

That said, I'd recommend avoiding the Innovation Living Ripple (unless you're obsessed with its style). The back cushions are softer than the seat (which is quite firm), but the back is quite low, and it's not very deep or well-proportioned for comfort.

These John Lewis sofa beds have a few areas that could be improved, but they might suit your search if you're looking for something specific.

Camber

My Score: 3/5

When it comes to the practical stuff, John Lewis' Camber sofa would have been one of my top picks for John Lewis sofa beds. It's another pull-out design, and though the mattress isn't the thickest or most plush, it's definitely comfortable enough if you layer in a topper into the mix.

I'm in two minds on the style. I don't mind a sofa with more traditional leanings, but it's perhaps a little uninspired. A great chameleon if you don't need a piece that will stand out, but not a design moment. To sit on, it feels well-proportioned — soft and bouncy in a good way, with a generous backrest.

If traditional is your style, I'd skip John Lewis' Charlotte II. I'd suggest that, with its high seat, back, and arms, this sofa bed was designed with an older person in mind. If that suits what you're looking for, then it's a solid choice, but its proportions feel a little off for an everyday home that isn't looking for more accessible seating as a priority.

Slumber

My Score: 3/5

Design-wise, Slumber was the sofa bed in the store I was drawn to first. It's a good-looking, modern sofa, and in the dark blue Ocean colorway, it makes for a striking figure. I tested the pull-out mattress first this time around and was impressed. It ticks the box for comfort for sleeping and good looks.

However, as much as I wanted to, I couldn't get on board with the feel of sitting on it. It's very firm and doesn't feel like a sofa you could have in your living room. As a guest room buy? Absolutely, I'd recommend it.

My overall verdict? John Lewis' sofa bed category isn't as strong as its sofa range, but it's worth remembering that sofa beds are, by their very nature, a bit of a compromise. I was most impressed by the quality of both Swyft's sofa beds, stocked by the retailer, and its own sofa bed versions of some of its classic sofas. These are generally the more expensive options.

If you're on a budget, I think you might find more comfortable sleeper sofas from IKEA, rather than going for John Lewis' more budget offerings.

Nothing's better than a good refresh that transforms an old piece into something with personality. I've seen Bemz sofa covers around for a few years now — chic slips that fit over stock IKEA pieces and make them look custom. And they've been on my wish list ever since. It's the kind of design that makes you want to buy the IKEA sofa just so that you can dress it in a Bemz sofa cover (and warning: they are considerably more expensive than IKEA).

I'm slightly in awe of people who buy large furniture online without seeing it in person first. My years working in the interiors industry have taught me that a sofa isn't just about how it looks, or whether it fits your space (although those things obviously matter); it's also about comfort. What's it like to sit on? What does the fabric feel like to touch? These are questions you really need answered before committing.

Soho Home has a reputation for curating statement pieces, and Soho Home's sofas are no exception. The designs tend to be inspired by its different 'houses,' all of which are unique, but the look is generally contemporary mixed with timeless design. It's the Soho Home 'Membership Club' aesthetic.

There are some fabulous large-scale sofas — the kind you might imagine in an architect-designed dream home — alongside more practically sized designs, and a few suited to compact spaces, too. That sense of individual character is heightened by the fact that different designs come from different makers. Most are crafted here in the UK, though some are made abroad.

I'll hold my hand up: some of the most comfortable and best sofas I've ever lounged on have been at various Soho House establishments — long, socially fuelled days and evenings sprawled across the furniture at Dean Street Townhouse, Shoreditch House, or Soho Farmhouse.

It's a great business model. People see them in the Soho Houses, then buy a similar version from Soho Home. The slight issue is that Soho Home only really has two stores where you can see these sofas in person, and they're both in central London — Sloane Square and Westbourne Grove. So when Livingetc asked me to review the range, I saw the chance to finally log all that lounging as research, and headed straight into the store for a proper game of musical chairs.

I've aimed to cover a genuine cross-section of sizes, shapes, styles, and materials, and called each one as I found it — comfort is personal, after all. These ratings are entirely my own — call it hands-on, seat-of-the-pants research. The good news? There are some real standouts. So which are the best Soho Home sofas? The ones worthy of the investment? Here's what I think.

Edison Corner Modular Sofa

Wrapped in Chocolate Velvet upholstery, the Edison Modular sofa I spotted on the store floor immediately stood out. Not just because of its huge scale, but also for its alluringly cool mid-century, rounded design aesthetic. I even like it in brown; it feels aptly early 1970s and the color suits the shape, right?

That said, it wasn't until I sat down on it that I realized just how much I liked this Soho Home sofa. Those round, bolster-shaped seat cushions that form the front, seat, and back supports are very comfortable. Admittedly, the Edison sofa has a slightly lower seating position that some people might find a bit of a struggle to get in and out of, but it's a real vibe once you're on it.

There are different variations available (the joy of modular), including a four-seater and L-shape. You can essentially create your own layout by purchasing the different individual sections. And while it's only available in the Velvet, there are 11 shades to choose from in this sofa material. Also, this velvet has a 40,000 rub count (confirmed by the Martindale rub count test) and a non-directional pile, which means you can rub or brush it either way without it changing tone.

I particularly enjoy the tufting on the seats and the backrest, and the extremely comfortable feather-filled cushions. The combination makes this a particularly dreamy option, and one which you could definitely sleep on for sure.

Ashford Sofa

Refined is probably the best word to describe Soho Home's Ashford sofa. It carries some serious 'classic' appeal with its elegant square shape, low-level slimline arms, and triple-foot detail. Of the various sofas I tried, I think it's probably got the widest style appeal. Whether sitting against a more traditional or contemporary architectural backdrop, the Ashford would look good anywhere. It's also a very reasonable scale, so it would probably fit, too!

Billed as a three-seater, and with a beech and engineered hardwood frame, I'd say it's really a comfortable two-seater. I tried to imagine how roomy it would feel with three people sitting on it, and, even though I'm pretty slim, I decided it might just lose its appealing 'sit back and sprawl' appeal.

The sofa I sat on in the store was upholstered in Linen Bisque. It looks divine in this fabric, don't get me wrong, but even though Soho Home suggests the linen has a 'durable 20,000 rub count' and that it's 'ideal for busier homes', I couldn't help but question it.

If that's you, instead of a beautiful but vulnerable pale shade, it might be wise to look at the slightly darker shades of the house Linen, house Velvet fabric, or the charming 'Ikat Stripe' fabric options. If you're imagining this in even a reasonably high-traffic living space — or more if it's for a family home or one with pets — then you might thank yourself later. Thankfully, there are lots of alternative options to choose from.

Additionally, the Ashford seat cushion depth is wonderful, but not as soft as you might expect. If you throw yourself down on it (like I did), anticipate the landing to be a little firmer than those plump cushions might lead you to believe.

Belmont Sofa

There's a reason why I found the Belmont sofa sitting pretty in Soho Home's grand foyer — it's a show-stopping design. In fact, it's more akin to a piece of crafted sculpture. It feels substantial, much like true investment furniture should.

Made with a combination of foam, feather, down, and fiber, and with a beautiful oak frame, the Belmont is available in either Linen or Velvet upholstery and in the brand's spectrum of colors. The design details of the Belmont add little moments of discovery, from the linen panels which are inset into the back of the frame to the tufted backrest cushions and the ribbed solid oak arms. These are the elements that give this particular design its unique sense of crafted character. It's also simply just a wonderful shape.

I sat on the linen-upholstered style on show in the Sloane Square store, and it rated on the firmer side. Whilst the velvet upholstery option might offer a 40,000 rub count and suggests it could withstand a 'busier home', I'm not sure it's necessarily a child or pet-friendly sofa.

Also, the wooden frame looks lovely but it does make it a little bit vulnerable to knocks and chips (the one I tried in-store already had a couple of nicks on the frame), so it's maybe best considered as a beautiful option fit for a slightly more formal or 'best' living room scene — and ideally one where you can position it so people can appreciate the detail on the back of it.

Theodore Sofa

What a pleasant surprise. The Theodore sofa is a petite two-seater and a great option for anyone who might be tight for space. At first glance, I judged the little Theodore wrong. The elegant wooden frame looks lovely — resplendent as it is in tapered birchwood with brass-effect finishing details — but it does not give me any comfort cues. However, once I sat down, I realized that it's actually very comfortable. The secret might be in those feather-wrapped cushion pads alone — they're beautifully pillowy!

The Theodore takes its style inspiration from the seating designs found at 40 Greek Street, and whilst I'm not normally a fan of a spindly wooden frame on seats (and I doubt you'd be lying down on this one), I think it's worthy of serious consideration.

This Soho Home sofa would be a great option for anyone looking for a practical or occasional petite pew. Also, there are single armchair, footstool, and daybed versions in the Theodore range, too, so you can mix and match a few pieces if that’s your preference.

Vivienne Modular Sofa

If you don't necessarily have the space for one of the larger lounge-y Soho Home sofas, then the Vivienne is a practical-sized option to consider instead. It offers the same modularity and similar comfort, but at a slightly more practical scale.

Inspired by the 8th floor of the brand's White City House location, the Vivienne sofa features rounded corners, cylindrical legs, and an eye-catching pleat-stitched wraparound back. Significantly, it’s got that 'low lounge' seating position so it feels very comfortable to sit down on, and, as a result, I imagine it rates highly on the 'napping' scale, too.

Available in Bouclé, Linen, or Velvet fabrics, there's also a series of different furniture pieces available in the Vivienne Collection — including an armchair, ottoman, and bench — so, much like the Theodore, you can even pair a couple of pieces together for a coherent living room look.

The short answer is yes, they are. Considering everything (comfort, quality, price, warranty), I would suggest Soho Home sofas offer acceptable value for money. The different upholstery materials on offer have varying rub counts, so make sure you study these details and consider this when specifying your preferred upholstery fabric.

Will Soho Home Remove My Old Sofa?

No, it will not. However, they do work closely with the British Heart Foundation, and as a result, Soho Home has details of the collection service that the British Heart Foundation offers. Pay attention to the details, though, which include the requirements that your old sofa be in good condition, clean, and that there be no missing parts. They advise that individually upholstered items must come with a fire label, and that each item in a sofa set should have its own fire label.

I think this list offers a fair and diverse cross-section of the current Soho Home sofas; whether you're looking for a nifty little two-seater (Theodore) or something sized up and altogether more sprawling (Edison Modular Corner), there should be something to suit most requirements and style tastes.

The in-store experience is also lovely. Whilst I was there, I was approached by two different members of the team to ask if I needed any help. It didn't feel pushy in any way. In fact, the second time I was approached, the lady asked if I'd like to sit down so she could explain more about each of the different sofa styles. If my experience is anything to go by, then this admired brand demonstrates good customer service.

I'm picturing something in the style of the iconic De Sede DS-600 Snake Sofa, but for way, way less.

Available in both this Soft Twill in Forest Green and a more neutral Tailored Chenille in Oyster Natural, if you were to buy all three segments, it would set you back a total of £1,848, which, while not 'cheap', definitely lands on the affordable end of the scale for a curved sofa, compared to what you could expect to pay at a lot of specialist retailers.

If you don't need a new sofa, or don't have the budget to splash out on this one, the good news is that the same design principle of floating furniture can be applied to other furniture in your living room. In case you missed it, going to the cinema is back in 2026. And as much as the calibre of cinematography lately has been a massive drawcard, I'd be lying if I said getting to watch the big screen while fully reclined isn't also appealing. Recreating that same feeling at home seems like a good idea in theory, but the reality of most reclining sofas is far from ideal.

The problem is that recliner sofas typically tend to be high-backed, bulky, and made of leather (or leather alternatives) with built-in cupholders and other tech-y features. And while I won't argue that they often comfortable, when it comes to style they're significantly lacking. Recently, though, I came across Habitat's Reggie Fabric 3-Seater Recliner Sofa, and if it hadn't have had the word in its name, I might never have realized its reclining potential.

Rather than a high-back, which would be too overwhelming in a small living room like mine, the beige sofa is a standard height with hidden headrests which fold up and down independantly to the footrests which also raise and lower. It's also upholstered in a corduroy fabric, a perfect, snuggly alternative if you don't like the squeakiness of leather. And, with only one small button on the side of the arms, it certainly passes as regular sleek, modern sofa.

Recliner alternatives are on the rise in 2026, and these days it's pretty common to find living room seating that secretly conceals kick-out functions, added head support, and extensions.

But nothing will be as comfortable as the real-deal recline, and surprisingly, after making this discovery, I went on to find a few other stylish reclining sofas you can shop. Here are my favorites.

While seats that recline are all well and good, there's another movement you shouldn't overlook in seating: swivel chairs. A simple spin has the power to completely open up a space, adding engagement and interest to a room.

When shopping for garden furniture, I'd forgive you if you accidentally overlooked IKEA's outdoor sofa offering at first. Admittedly, it's not the first place I'd think to go either, but after spending an afternoon sitting on every style I could find in their showroom, I've got to admit: I'm pretty impressed.

Not only are IKEA's outdoor sofas available at the brand's famously affordable prices, but some models have some serious Scandi style, too. Options might not be as plentiful as other garden furniture brands, but depending on how you want to look at it, sometimes less choice can be a blessing.

As for which of IKEA's outdoor sofas to choose, I have become quite astute at picking a quality design over the last few years, and, as part of researching for this article, I spent an afternoon running — okay, there was a lot of lounging involved, too — around my local IKEA, testing every outdoor sofa I could sit on.

Three IKEA outdoor sofas really tickled my fancy, but when I looked online afterwards, I discovered two more that hadn't been on the showroom floor that day, but I really wished had been (so they get an honorable mention). So, without further ado, these are the only IKEA outdoor sofas you really need to know about.

NÄMMARÖ

Those who know know that as far as IKEA outdoor sofas go, the NÄMMARÖ series is a fan favorite. In fact, it's regularly completely sold out in the UK as a result. So, of course, I had to give it a try for myself.

To start, a disclaimer: I did not sit on the 2-seat NÄMMARÖ. I sat on what was essentially a sectional version, built out with the two-seaters and other NÄMMARÖ series components. Overall, though, it was basically the same product, and its modularity is one of the things people love most about this IKEA outdoor sofa.

As for my thoughts, this is quite a chic sofa. The seat is super firm (which shouldn't be too shocking; the frame is wood), and comfortably deep. The cream-colored cushions might be best suited for a covered patio, as I would imagine they get dirty quite easily, but they are also removable and washable, which is good.

But don't just take it from me. This IKEA outdoor sofa is rated 4.7/5-stars after 64 reviews, with one customer writing: "The long wait for it all to be back in stock was totally worth it. It's super comfortable and looks great in my garden. Some reviewers mention that the cushions slip. I haven't found this at all, as the seat cushions are anchored to the frame with elastic fixings. The DUVHOLMEN cushions with cream FROSON covers are very comfortable, and my dogs' muddy paw prints wipe off easily with a damp cloth. My only regret is that I didn't get one years ago!"

TEGELÖN

The TEGELÖN is not your average IKEA outdoor sofa. It's pretty minimal, as you can tell from my photo above, and comes as part of a conversation set, which is complete with two chairs and a coffee table. Despite appearances, I thought this was comfier than anticipated.

Is it the same feel as sitting on a couch with cushions? Not at all. But it's a good option for a front porch set-up, and would require a lot less care than something with true seats. I like that it's black, as well, which is yet another safeguard against stains and marks. And it's currently on sale.

Looking at reviews, one customer identified a bit of an annoying point: it's currently only available to purchase as a complete set rather than individual pieces, which could be restricting depending on the size of your garden — but that's what Facebook Marketplace is for, right?

VITTSKÄR

The VITTSKÄR is probably the most traditional of these three IKEA outdoor sofas. It has very plush cushions and a very deep sit, with a plastic/rattan frame. Due to its size, I'd say it's better for backyards and patios than a small balcony.

And while the plastic isn't quite as nice as the Acacia wood on the NÄMMARÖ, it's definitely easy to care for and quite durable. You should have no problems with this sitting on an uncovered patio (white cushions aside).

Also, I liked that the chaise is movable, so you can turn whichever side you like into the sectional or even treat the ottoman as a 'coffee' table. Alternatively, there is a matching coffee table, too.

While it currently only has one review online, it's remarkably positive. "This IKEA outdoor sofa has ample space for extra cushions along the back and is very comfortable to lie out on," it reads. "I love that I can replace any cushions or parts in the future if need be, as it is totally modular and you can even just buy a new cushion insert. The fabric is smooth and very easy to clean."

The review does note one drawback, though. "The seat cushion toggles have nothing to attach to, so I just linked them to each other at the back of the cushions. I ended up buying another backrest and back cushion for the ottoman part, as otherwise the end cushion would just slide around, and the zipper is visible on three sides."

I did not get to try these options in-store, but I did look into them online. And they're on this list as much for positive customer reviews as they are for style.

Buying a sofa is — in a word — hard. And expensive. And frustrating, and painful, and exhausting, too. I guess maybe you can't distill the sofa-buying process down to just one word, because it really is just too big a deal. Because if you want a couch that's really going to last, you can't take any shortcuts.

If there were a shortcut, though, I am confident it would have something to do with IKEA's sofas. Because of its reputation and its furniture acumen, you can generally shop with the understanding that you'll find something of decent quality. But there is also so much product to sort through, and in this case, that might mean finding the best sofa for you feels like finding a needle in a haystack.

Well, dear reader, that's where I can help. A few weeks ago, I spent an afternoon at my local store, where I did nothing but sit on every single IKEA sofa available in the showroom (okay fine, I ate some meatballs, too). I sat up, sat down, rolled around, touched, felt, plopped, plumped ... I did everything you would need to do to get a decent feel for a sofa before purchasing, then compiled my testing in the shortlist below.

Now, you can shop a pre-selected shortlist of sofas that not only impressed me during my visit but also come with a first-person review you can trust. Below, you'll find my five fave IKEA sofas (though take a look at my separate guide to IKEA sleeper sofas if you're looking for a sofa bed) as well as some honorable mentions, which are good choices, stylistically, but may come with more caveats than their predecessors.

JÄTTEBO

This was, by far, my favorite IKEA sofa. From my experience, I would certainly recommend it. It is so incredibly chic — the low profile, the corduroy fabric, the green color — and very on trend. Plus, IKEA's JÄTTEBO sofa also conceals hidden storage beneath (yes, you read that right).

I quite like that it is modular, as well, which means you can reconfigure the layout as your life changes, grows and expands. The sit itself is medium — it was softer than I thought but not uber-plush, either.

I also touched and felt a few of the different upholsteries available and can confidently say they are all chic and of high quality. The soft brown was definitely my favorite (included in the gallery above), but the white and blue bouclés were also nice for something a bit more tactile.

STOCKHOLM 2025

As for my second favorite IKEA sofa, I would have to say the STOCKHOLM 3-seater took the cake. The look and style of this piece is a 10/10, and it's not something that seems like it came from IKEA; the visible wooden frame, for instance, elevates it instantly.

It's also much bigger than you'd expect, in part because of the deep seat and pocket-spring core, and the sit is extremely plush — probably an eight out of 10, with 10 being the most plush possible. (So if you have back problems, maybe not the one for you.)

The cotton-linen blend fabric feels pretty durable and would be nice to curl up on, but I do wish that the fill felt a touch more substantive or high-quality. It's also worth noting that the cover is washable and comes with a 25-year guarantee.

UPPÅKRA

If you're looking to buy a main living room sofa for a family, the UPPÅKRA is probably the one for you. It's a very big couch, with an extremely deep seat depth and a chaise that could fit two adults or three to four kids.

Now, at least in my showroom, the cushions on the display UPPÅKRA seemed a tad too big for the frame, but I'm not sure if that was just wear and tear on the showroom model or a hallmark of the product. Still, though, the sit is really nice, and the overall product makes for a quality family couch, not least of all because the style is top-notch.

It comes in six different colored, washable fabrics, and you can also choose between wood or chrome-plated legs, depending on the look you're going for. As someone who cares a lot about style, I appreciate the options.

KIVIK

The KIVIK is a solid buy when it comes to IKEA sofas. I have linked a three-seater here, but I tried a sectional in the store. I quite liked the chaise; it was pretty wide and could easily serve as a place for a guest to sleep.

Regarding plushness, I'd give this a 7/10. It didn't feel like a luxury sofa to me, but it felt good for what it was. In other words, if you bought this couch online and sight unseen, you wouldn't be unhappy when it arrived.

The other thing I would note: the armrests are sofa height, so if you like to lean your head on your hand while you, say, read a book, you'd be leaning over pretty far. That said, one online review notes: "To someone who has back problems, I find this sofa very comfortable. It’s on the firm side (which is perfect for me) and doesn’t eat you when you sit down."

It also comes in eight different fabric colors. Plus, top tip: the matching Kivik footstool has hidden storage space.

FINNALA

The FINNALA is another solid IKEA sofa. Good for the price, nice fabric, stylish silhouette. I'd say that the sit leans plush (6/10), but not overly so, and that the seat itself is deep.

Personally, I wish this had a bench cushion instead of three individual seats — I just think that's a classier look — but it's also true that three separate cushions make for easier cleaning and replacement. So, there's a silver lining there. I'd just keep an eye on this fabric if you have pets, as I'm not sure that it would be a good sofa for animals.

I'm also sorry to UK readers, but this IKEA sofa seems to only be available in the US right now. It's also currently on clearance, so it may be on its way out. If you like the look, I'd move quickly.

Honorable Mentions

The IKEA sofas that are still worth mentioning — and could still work great for you! — but didn't crack my top five after my afternoon spent in-store.

SALTMYRAN

I don't think the look and sit of IKEA's SALTMYRAN 2-Seat/loveseat rises to the level of main sofa (you just cannot lounge the way you want on this), but it's a shocker for the price and also surprisingly comfortable. It has a medium firmness with a compact, minimalist design. Consider for an office, guest room, or dorm.

SALTSJÖBADEN

The SALTSJÖBADEN is pretty firm, but the deep seat kind of makes up for that (i.e. you don't feel like you're chilling with a railroad-straight spine). The fabric covers are washable, and would probably stand up nicely against kids and pets. In fact, the IKEA I visited had this in a nursery-themed showroom, and I quite liked that placement.

If you'd like to use the 2-seater as a main couch, I would also recommend buying the matching footstool to go with it; I tried it out and liked having that flexibility. But the SALTSJÖBADEN series also has three-seat and sectional options, too, so you're covered if you want something bigger, too.

MORABO

The MORABO would be higher on this list of IKEA sofas if it were available in both the U.S. and the U.K. — as of this writing, it is only available in the U.S. Sigh. This green colorway is fabulous, in my opinion; in store, I sat on a black leather MORABO, which, although the quality did surprise me (it has a nice deep seat and a medium-plush sit), wasn't my favorite stylistically. If you can capitalize on this natural green look, do it. Best of all, you can honestly bring this into your scheme as something of a neutral.

Anecdotally speaking, I would say that the FRIHETEN sleeper sofa is one of, if not the, best-selling sofas at IKEA. You can't seem to go on any trip or crash at any friend's house without running into one. And for good reason!

I have had many a sound night's sleep on a FRIHETEN, then gotten up and lounged on it all day. Don't get me wrong — it's not what I'd want as the main couch in my living room. But it's an affordable, versatile piece that makes hosting overnight guests a breeze. You can see the appeal!

What is the best-looking IKEA sofa? 

In my opinion, the best-looking IKEA sofa is easily the JÄTTEBO. Truthfully, it blew me away. I felt like I was looking at and sitting on something much more expensive, from a higher-end brand. The other fabric options are just as chic as the olive green I tried, too. I don't think you can go wrong with this sofa, especially because it's genuinely comfortable, too. Perhaps on the more expensive side for this retailer, but worth the money, no doubt.
