In case you missed it, going to the cinema is back in 2026. And as much as the calibre of cinematography lately has been a massive drawcard, I'd be lying if I said getting to watch the big screen while fully reclined isn't also appealing. Recreating that same feeling at home seems like a good idea in theory, but the reality of most reclining sofas is far from ideal.

The problem is that recliner sofas typically tend to be high-backed, bulky, and made of leather (or leather alternatives) with built-in cupholders and other tech-y features. And while I won't argue that they often comfortable, when it comes to style they're significantly lacking. Recently, though, I came across Habitat's Reggie Fabric 3-Seater Recliner Sofa, and if it hadn't have had the word in its name, I might never have realized its reclining potential.

Rather than a high-back, which would be too overwhelming in a small living room like mine, the beige sofa is a standard height with hidden headrests which fold up and down independantly to the footrests which also raise and lower. It's also upholstered in a corduroy fabric, a perfect, snuggly alternative if you don't like the squeakiness of leather. And, with only one small button on the side of the arms, it certainly passes as regular sleek, modern sofa.

Recliner alternatives are on the rise in 2026, and these days it's pretty common to find living room seating that secretly conceals kick-out functions, added head support, and extensions.

But nothing will be as comfortable as the real-deal recline, and surprisingly, after making this discovery, I went on to find a few other stylish reclining sofas you can shop. Here are my favorites.

While seats that recline are all well and good, there's another movement you shouldn't overlook in seating: swivel chairs. A simple spin has the power to completely open up a space, adding engagement and interest to a room.

When shopping for garden furniture, I'd forgive you if you accidentally overlooked IKEA's outdoor sofa offering at first. Admittedly, it's not the first place I'd think to go either, but after spending an afternoon sitting on every style I could find in their showroom, I've got to admit: I'm pretty impressed.

Not only are IKEA's outdoor sofas available at the brand's famously affordable prices, but some models have some serious Scandi style, too. Options might not be as plentiful as other garden furniture brands, but depending on how you want to look at it, sometimes less choice can be a blessing.

As for which of IKEA's outdoor sofas to choose, I have become quite astute at picking a quality design over the last few years, and, as part of researching for this article, I spent an afternoon running — okay, there was a lot of lounging involved, too — around my local IKEA, testing every outdoor sofa I could sit on.

Three IKEA outdoor sofas really tickled my fancy, but when I looked online afterwards, I discovered two more that hadn't been on the showroom floor that day, but I really wished had been (so they get an honorable mention). So, without further ado, these are the only IKEA outdoor sofas you really need to know about.

NÄMMARÖ

Those who know know that as far as IKEA outdoor sofas go, the NÄMMARÖ series is a fan favorite. In fact, it's regularly completely sold out in the UK as a result. So, of course, I had to give it a try for myself.

To start, a disclaimer: I did not sit on the 2-seat NÄMMARÖ. I sat on what was essentially a sectional version, built out with the two-seaters and other NÄMMARÖ series components. Overall, though, it was basically the same product, and its modularity is one of the things people love most about this IKEA outdoor sofa.

As for my thoughts, this is quite a chic sofa. The seat is super firm (which shouldn't be too shocking; the frame is wood), and comfortably deep. The cream-colored cushions might be best suited for a covered patio, as I would imagine they get dirty quite easily, but they are also removable and washable, which is good.

But don't just take it from me. This IKEA outdoor sofa is rated 4.7/5-stars after 64 reviews, with one customer writing: "The long wait for it all to be back in stock was totally worth it. It's super comfortable and looks great in my garden. Some reviewers mention that the cushions slip. I haven't found this at all, as the seat cushions are anchored to the frame with elastic fixings. The DUVHOLMEN cushions with cream FROSON covers are very comfortable, and my dogs' muddy paw prints wipe off easily with a damp cloth. My only regret is that I didn't get one years ago!"

TEGELÖN

The TEGELÖN is not your average IKEA outdoor sofa. It's pretty minimal, as you can tell from my photo above, and comes as part of a conversation set, which is complete with two chairs and a coffee table. Despite appearances, I thought this was comfier than anticipated.

Is it the same feel as sitting on a couch with cushions? Not at all. But it's a good option for a front porch set-up, and would require a lot less care than something with true seats. I like that it's black, as well, which is yet another safeguard against stains and marks. And it's currently on sale.

Looking at reviews, one customer identified a bit of an annoying point: it's currently only available to purchase as a complete set rather than individual pieces, which could be restricting depending on the size of your garden — but that's what Facebook Marketplace is for, right?

VITTSKÄR

The VITTSKÄR is probably the most traditional of these three IKEA outdoor sofas. It has very plush cushions and a very deep sit, with a plastic/rattan frame. Due to its size, I'd say it's better for backyards and patios than a small balcony.

And while the plastic isn't quite as nice as the Acacia wood on the NÄMMARÖ, it's definitely easy to care for and quite durable. You should have no problems with this sitting on an uncovered patio (white cushions aside).

Also, I liked that the chaise is movable, so you can turn whichever side you like into the sectional or even treat the ottoman as a 'coffee' table. Alternatively, there is a matching coffee table, too.

While it currently only has one review online, it's remarkably positive. "This IKEA outdoor sofa has ample space for extra cushions along the back and is very comfortable to lie out on," it reads. "I love that I can replace any cushions or parts in the future if need be, as it is totally modular and you can even just buy a new cushion insert. The fabric is smooth and very easy to clean."

The review does note one drawback, though. "The seat cushion toggles have nothing to attach to, so I just linked them to each other at the back of the cushions. I ended up buying another backrest and back cushion for the ottoman part, as otherwise the end cushion would just slide around, and the zipper is visible on three sides."

I did not get to try these options in-store, but I did look into them online. And they're on this list as much for positive customer reviews as they are for style.

Buying a sofa is — in a word — hard. And expensive. And frustrating, and painful, and exhausting, too. I guess maybe you can't distill the sofa-buying process down to just one word, because it really is just too big a deal. Because if you want a couch that's really going to last, you can't take any shortcuts.

If there were a shortcut, though, I am confident it would have something to do with IKEA's sofas. Because of its reputation and its furniture acumen, you can generally shop with the understanding that you'll find something of decent quality. But there is also so much product to sort through, and in this case, that might mean finding the best sofa for you feels like finding a needle in a haystack.

Well, dear reader, that's where I can help. A few weeks ago, I spent an afternoon at my local store, where I did nothing but sit on every single IKEA sofa available in the showroom (okay fine, I ate some meatballs, too). I sat up, sat down, rolled around, touched, felt, plopped, plumped ... I did everything you would need to do to get a decent feel for a sofa before purchasing, then compiled my testing in the shortlist below.

Now, you can shop a pre-selected shortlist of sofas that not only impressed me during my visit but also come with a first-person review you can trust. Below, you'll find my five fave IKEA sofas (though take a look at my separate guide to IKEA sleeper sofas if you're looking for a sofa bed) as well as some honorable mentions, which are good choices, stylistically, but may come with more caveats than their predecessors.

JÄTTEBO

This was, by far, my favorite IKEA sofa. From my experience, I would certainly recommend it. It is so incredibly chic — the low profile, the corduroy fabric, the green color — and very on trend. Plus, IKEA's JÄTTEBO sofa also conceals hidden storage beneath (yes, you read that right).

I quite like that it is modular, as well, which means you can reconfigure the layout as your life changes, grows and expands. The sit itself is medium — it was softer than I thought but not uber-plush, either.

I also touched and felt a few of the different upholsteries available and can confidently say they are all chic and of high quality. The soft brown was definitely my favorite (included in the gallery above), but the white and blue bouclés were also nice for something a bit more tactile.

STOCKHOLM 2025

As for my second favorite IKEA sofa, I would have to say the STOCKHOLM 3-seater took the cake. The look and style of this piece is a 10/10, and it's not something that seems like it came from IKEA; the visible wooden frame, for instance, elevates it instantly.

It's also much bigger than you'd expect, in part because of the deep seat and pocket-spring core, and the sit is extremely plush — probably an eight out of 10, with 10 being the most plush possible. (So if you have back problems, maybe not the one for you.)

The cotton-linen blend fabric feels pretty durable and would be nice to curl up on, but I do wish that the fill felt a touch more substantive or high-quality. It's also worth noting that the cover is washable and comes with a 25-year guarantee.

UPPÅKRA

If you're looking to buy a main living room sofa for a family, the UPPÅKRA is probably the one for you. It's a very big couch, with an extremely deep seat depth and a chaise that could fit two adults or three to four kids.

Now, at least in my showroom, the cushions on the display UPPÅKRA seemed a tad too big for the frame, but I'm not sure if that was just wear and tear on the showroom model or a hallmark of the product. Still, though, the sit is really nice, and the overall product makes for a quality family couch, not least of all because the style is top-notch.

It comes in six different colored, washable fabrics, and you can also choose between wood or chrome-plated legs, depending on the look you're going for. As someone who cares a lot about style, I appreciate the options.

KIVIK

The KIVIK is a solid buy when it comes to IKEA sofas. I have linked a three-seater here, but I tried a sectional in the store. I quite liked the chaise; it was pretty wide and could easily serve as a place for a guest to sleep.

Regarding plushness, I'd give this a 7/10. It didn't feel like a luxury sofa to me, but it felt good for what it was. In other words, if you bought this couch online and sight unseen, you wouldn't be unhappy when it arrived.

The other thing I would note: the armrests are sofa height, so if you like to lean your head on your hand while you, say, read a book, you'd be leaning over pretty far. That said, one online review notes: "To someone who has back problems, I find this sofa very comfortable. It’s on the firm side (which is perfect for me) and doesn’t eat you when you sit down."

It also comes in eight different fabric colors. Plus, top tip: the matching Kivik footstool has hidden storage space.

FINNALA

The FINNALA is another solid IKEA sofa. Good for the price, nice fabric, stylish silhouette. I'd say that the sit leans plush (6/10), but not overly so, and that the seat itself is deep.

Personally, I wish this had a bench cushion instead of three individual seats — I just think that's a classier look — but it's also true that three separate cushions make for easier cleaning and replacement. So, there's a silver lining there. I'd just keep an eye on this fabric if you have pets, as I'm not sure that it would be a good sofa for animals.

I'm also sorry to UK readers, but this IKEA sofa seems to only be available in the US right now. It's also currently on clearance, so it may be on its way out. If you like the look, I'd move quickly.

Honorable Mentions

The IKEA sofas that are still worth mentioning — and could still work great for you! — but didn't crack my top five after my afternoon spent in-store.

SALTMYRAN

I don't think the look and sit of IKEA's SALTMYRAN 2-Seat/loveseat rises to the level of main sofa (you just cannot lounge the way you want on this), but it's a shocker for the price and also surprisingly comfortable. It has a medium firmness with a compact, minimalist design. Consider for an office, guest room, or dorm.

SALTSJÖBADEN

The SALTSJÖBADEN is pretty firm, but the deep seat kind of makes up for that (i.e. you don't feel like you're chilling with a railroad-straight spine). The fabric covers are washable, and would probably stand up nicely against kids and pets. In fact, the IKEA I visited had this in a nursery-themed showroom, and I quite liked that placement.

If you'd like to use the 2-seater as a main couch, I would also recommend buying the matching footstool to go with it; I tried it out and liked having that flexibility. But the SALTSJÖBADEN series also has three-seat and sectional options, too, so you're covered if you want something bigger, too.

MORABO

The MORABO would be higher on this list of IKEA sofas if it were available in both the U.S. and the U.K. — as of this writing, it is only available in the U.S. Sigh. This green colorway is fabulous, in my opinion; in store, I sat on a black leather MORABO, which, although the quality did surprise me (it has a nice deep seat and a medium-plush sit), wasn't my favorite stylistically. If you can capitalize on this natural green look, do it. Best of all, you can honestly bring this into your scheme as something of a neutral.

Anecdotally speaking, I would say that the FRIHETEN sleeper sofa is one of, if not the, best-selling sofas at IKEA. You can't seem to go on any trip or crash at any friend's house without running into one. And for good reason!

I have had many a sound night's sleep on a FRIHETEN, then gotten up and lounged on it all day. Don't get me wrong — it's not what I'd want as the main couch in my living room. But it's an affordable, versatile piece that makes hosting overnight guests a breeze. You can see the appeal!

In my opinion, the best-looking IKEA sofa is easily the JÄTTEBO. Truthfully, it blew me away. I felt like I was looking at and sitting on something much more expensive, from a higher-end brand. The other fabric options are just as chic as the olive green I tried, too. I don't think you can go wrong with this sofa, especially because it's genuinely comfortable, too. Perhaps on the more expensive side for this retailer, but worth the money, no doubt.

"The original owners had embedded vintage European architectural elements into the property when it was first built," says Corinne. "Anchoring the sunken lounge, we coated our spacious molded L-shaped lounge with a pale sandstone-shaded micro-cement render that flows down to cover the room’s floor," explains Yasmine Ghoneim, director of YSG Studio. "Unifying the home, this gently glistening render features on the kitchen walls and ceiling, in the primary suite (via the bedhead), plus the guest bathroom."

9. Add Unexpected Cushions

"Part of the client's brief to us was she wanted to incorporate furniture with organic shapes in an unexpected layout," says Whitney Romanoff, principal designer at Meet West Studio of this space in the Arkansas home she designed for her clients. "We wanted this space to have a boutique hotel lobby vibe that would draw people in — a spot that could be comfortable for both cozy lounging near the fire and a post-dinner drink with a good record on." And the chocolate velvet Kagan-style sofa is the perfect piece. The cushions are an unexpected addition, and they work so well.

"As we were designing the house we tried to blur the lines between the traditional and the modern interior design, mixing new and vintage, playing with texture and finishes that feel appropriate and connected to Montauk," explains designer Robert McKinley, of Studio Robert McKinley of this space and the bungalow in general. "It is always important to make sure we are inspired by the colors, materials, and vibe of the place and its spirit." The brown sofa, while bold, perfectly blends into its surroundings and forms a relationship with the waves outside.

King Living is a household name in Australia. Growing up there, my family had a sofa from the brand, and so did all my friends' parents. It has such a reputation that when my partner and I first moved into our own flat, we found a King Living sofa on Facebook Marketplace for just $300, and bought it without ever sitting on it — we knew it would be good. (And, yes, it was.)

I've since moved to the UK, but thankfully, so has the popular sofa brand. So far, there are three London showrooms: in Westfield, Kingston upon Thames, and on Tottenham Court Road, where I recently visited to see (and sit on) some of the best-selling and newer King Living sofas.

So, what do you need to know about the brand? The TLDR is that it owns its own factories in Australia, China, and Thailand, which reduces costs and means you can get almost everything replaced — even very small, specific parts. It also means customization options are fairly limitless. That said, most sofas are already modular and come in multiple configurations (and many are also sofa beds, too).

Its Australian heritage has heavily influenced the colorways; you'll see lots of sandy beiges and earthy greens inspired by the outback, but there are hundreds (no exaggeration) of other options available, too, and most feature a convenient zip-and-velcro system that makes changing (and washing) the sofa covers very, very easy.

And while the brand told me that the best-selling King Living sofa styles are the Jasper, the 1977, the Zaza, and the Delta (an original, unchanged design from the 90s), below, I've pulled my personal favorites that I think feel particularly design-y, have particularly innovative features, or would work best in tighter British homes.

1977

I've had my eye on King Living's 1977 Sofa ever since I was invited to an event to celebrate its relaunch in Sydney back in 2023. It was styled with each modular section in a different fabric, which was super cool, and I liked how it was comfortable yet firm and didn't slump or slouch. If you're a fan of Ligne Roset's Togo Sofa, you'll like this one. That said, it's slightly higher off the ground, which is a strong selling point.

Being modular, you can build a few different configurations, and it's available in a number of machine-washable covers (but not King Living's full fabric archive), including textured chenille, bouclé, quilted fabrics, and the iconic furry 'Yowie'.

Unlike a lot of King Living's other sofas, this one can't fold back into a sofa bed and doesn't have any hidden tricks — what you see is largely what you get, but that's not a bad thing by any means. It's a very stylish sofa. I personally know a few people who own it and love it, and when I first discovered how affordable it was, if I hadn't already owned a sofa, King Living's 1977 would be sitting in my own living room.

Haven

Haven is one of the newer King Living sofa designs, and it immediately caught my attention when I saw it in this lustrous green fabric with its sculptural flared arms. Well, I quickly discovered that those flared arms move in and out, while the backrest can be raised and lowered (forget what you thought you knew about reclining sofas).

It's also very easy to adjust — just a push-and-pull situation — rather than having to deal with any complicated mechanisms or levers, which I love. It's as if, when you stretch, the sofa could actually stretch with you. Plus, it just looks more comfortable when the armrests are 'squished' like that.

Comfort-wise, it was medium-soft with super deep seats. It's squishy without being hard to get out of, and the seat cushions didn't feel like they'd require constant plumping; there was no indent left when I stood up. That said, you can choose between 'Premium Soft' and 'Premium Firm' cushions. And I particularly liked the configuration with the keystone chaise that felt like quite a unique shape, which gave it a bit of interest without being trendy.

Fleur

I'm a sucker for a clever couch — one that looks really good but is also comfortable (not always a common combination). Well, once I saw that you can flip the backrest on King Living's Fleur Sofa for added neck support, I was sold. Typically, this requires either a bulky backrest or additional bolsters, but with Fleur, it feels seamless. I guess because ultimately it is. Looking at it in the showroom, I never would have known it was designed to do this.

Style-wise, the Fleur doesn't scream 'jump-on-me'. It's curvaceous, but at the same time somewhat angled, and certainly on the firmer side of things. But it makes you feel supported while sitting on it. Plus, its ever-so-subtle flared arms maximize the sitting space — an important factor for smaller homes.

Once again, you can upholster it in almost too many options, but the style shown in the showroom (the Amalfi Blush, an additional £900) was a beautiful textural weave that feels way more timeless than bouclé, and colored without being solid (if that makes sense?)

Delta Coast

It's an Australian brand, so I knew eventually I was going to be pulled towards a more coastal-style sofa, and it eventually came in the form of King Living's Delta Coast. Depending on your taste, I like that you can choose between piped or taped cushions — which either ramp up that coastal look or pull it back.

This was by far the comfiest King Living sofa I sat on, particularly if you're someone who wants that squishy, sink-in feeling. However, the cushions are deep, and even the sofa itself is quite large and boxy, so you'd need a big room to fit it. (Though it wasn't as big as the Jasper sofa.)

I wasn't overwhelmed by the woven gray upholstery on display in the showroom, but seeing it online in a cream fabric feels way fresher; once again, there are hundreds of fabrics to choose from.

But the thing that really impressed me about this sofa was seeing it fold back into a sofa bed — perhaps the most enticing I've ever seen, and certainly no need for a mattress topper. Apart from that, there are more than a few other configurations you can contort this sofa into, so no matter your space, I think you'd be able to find one that fits.

Plateau Outdoor

I don't know why I was so surprised to see King Living's outdoor seating range in the showroom — it is an Australian brand after all. And while the 1977 Outdoor Sofa was a standout (it looked exactly the same as the indoor version, but with a special drain-through foam, among other tweaks), my pick is the Plateau Outdoor Sofa.

Part-sofa, part-bench; it's just how multifunctional this design was that impressed me the most. The shape is timeless, and the cushions were weighted enough that you could comfortably rest against them (they had a grip underneath to help hold them in place), but light enough that you could still move them around to position them however you want — even under the platform at one end to transform the piece into a daybed. There are even configurations available with built-in side tables, depending on the size of your space.

Available in a range of different fabrics, I saw the Cascade Vista in the showroom (which is an additional £300), but it was really pretty (patterned without being too much), and surprisingly soft to the touch, unlike a lot of outdoor fabrics. You can also customize the color of the powder-coated frame, too.

Are King Living Sofas Good Quality?

The team in the showroom was quick to tell me that King Living sofas are all made with engineered steel frames, rather than more traditional timber framing — as such, they're typically more durable than your average sofa. The steel frame is backed by a 25-year warranty, too.

"Our Postureflex® Seating System is another key part of the construction," adds Chris Cooke, head of design at King Living. "It works with the frame to help maintain comfort, support, and appearance over time. Our sofas also feature removable covers, so they can be cleaned, refreshed, or replaced, helping extend the life of the piece."

So yes, I'd say King Living sofas are good quality.

Are King Living Sofas Customizable?

I think one of the biggest selling points of King Living's sofa range is just how customizable it is. For one, there's the choice of upholstery to consider, with hundreds of options for fabrics, leathers, and finishes to choose from. Even the outdoor sofas have a range of different fabrics, including bouclé.

Covers can also be removed or replaced, "which means the sofa can be refreshed with a new fabric or leather rather than replaced entirely," says Chris.

Plus, many of King Living's sofas are modular, "so customers can create a layout that works for their space and adapt it over time if their needs change," says Chris.

When Does a Daybed Work?

When styling a daybed in a living room, upholstery and comfort are also key. "Softer, tactile fabrics like bouclé, linen blends, or velvet work particularly well because they enhance the relaxed feel," says John. Remember, the goal here is to cultivate the allure of relaxation (it's all very 'fainting sofas' coded).

When Does a Sofa Bed Work?

Okay, so what about sofa beds? While just as stylish and relaxing, a sofa bed is more of a multifunctional piece, "designed to work as an everyday sofa with the added practicality of converting into a proper sleeping space," says John. It's function first, with form following closely behind.

That said, modern sofa beds are much more considered than previous styles; "The focus now is on creating something that feels just as comfortable and visually refined as a standard sofa," says John. Mid-century sofa beds have become a staple, and some models (like Swyft's Model 12 Sofa Bed) even come with a chaise lounge that doubles as storage.

As for where to position a sofa bed, John says, "This style is better suited to guest rooms, smaller homes, or multifunctional living spaces where practicality is important." The key is styling your sofa bed like you would any sofa, so it feels fully integrated into the room.

When shopping for sofa beds, considering that it will double as a bed, internal construction matters more than with daybeds. "Look for durable frames, quality mechanisms, and supportive mattresses, especially if it’ll be used regularly for sleeping," says John.

It's become my rule that I won't personally recommend a sofa to a reader before I've sat on it myself — they're too much of an investment, no matter what your budget is to play the guessing game. So, with that in mind, I set out to IKEA on a fact-finding mission, looking to try out some new sofas.

Because IKEA recently launched some new designs, including the UPPÅKRA, which is available in the UK and US, and the LILLESÄTER, which doesn't appear to be available in the US quite yet. However, as I was visiting a smaller store, these new designs hadn't made it to the floor quite yet. Instead, however, I spotted the JÄTTEBO range in a new eye-catching color that made me look at it in a different light. It's not a new sofa range — it's been around a few years — but I don't think I appreciated it has a little secret. A hidden storage compartment.

But, is it comfortable? Durable? Capacious enough to actually be useful? I put it through its paces, and combed through the reviews to see how it stacks up against the best IKEA sofas.

Let's start with the positives. The storage is a good size, and the mechanism assists you with lifting the seat, making it easy to access what you've stored underneath (though I had a little more trouble closing than I did opening it). The style of the Samsala fabric on the model I saw is objectively cool, too. It's modern, a little young feeling, but I can definitely envisage it in a trendy apartment.

Now, let's talk about comfort. It's definitely a soft sofa, which I was surprised at, because boxy styles like this, let alone ones that incorporate storage, tend to be quite firm. I think, instantly, it feels comfortable when you test it out, but I know I'm a firm sofa lover at heart, so I'd question how comfortable you'd be sitting on this for a long time.

As someone who is on the taller side of the spectrum, the seat was deep enough, but the back is quite low, meaning it can be difficult to fully relax into it. However, you can buy additional headrest pillows from IKEA that give a little more support.

Looking at the reviews, some buyers have concerns over the softness of the materials used, and the durability of the foam for a sofa that gets regular use in a busy family space, suggesting it might be fine for something like a teenager's room instead.

I’m currently in the middle of moving, which means I’ve been deep in the search for the right sofa bed. It sounds simple at first, but if you’re reading this, you’ll know it rarely is. It’s never just a design decision, it’s a practical one too.

That’s exactly what I had in mind when curating this edit, from my little black book of where to buy a sofa. After spending far too long searching and comparing, I’ve pulled together 12 Scandinavian-style sofa beds that actually get it right, comfortable, practical, and genuinely considered.

For sofa beds, the questions go beyond aesthetics or which fabric you choose but about how you actually want to live with it. In fact, I think it might actually look better, plus it doubles as a sofa bed, and — if you still need convincing — it's currently on sale for £559.99, down from £699.99, making it even more comparable to Habitat's offering.

With its clean and straight lines, low-slung profile, and purposefully exposed wooden frame, the Quincy draws on many of the same mid-century design elements as the sold-out Myra sofa. But the main difference? It's also a sofa bed, and that's a feature worth way more than the £9.99 price difference if you ask me.

The Quincy sofa bed is actually part of La Redoute's in-house So'Home label — which is where you'll find the brand's most accessible yet style-conscious homeware, designed for a UK buyer. And, like pretty much everything else in the range, the Quincy has also managed to find its way into La Redoute's Big Spring Sale right now, so if you're in the market, now is the time to shop.

Not sure whether it's quite right for you? Thankfully, I've managed to find plenty more mid-century modern sofa beds, from similar click-clack styles to more expensive bespoke options.

While picking out a low-profile sofa is definitely one really effective way to embrace more of the retro-modern aesthetic in your living room, there are plenty of other things to consider, too.

When styling a mid-century modern living room, focus on curating a collection of warm-wood furniture, sculptural lighting, and accessories made of materials like glass and metal.

If you're a fan of the verdure print trend that's taken over seating lately, you're going to want to see this.

The collection "carries a distinctly European sensibility but with a softness that feels lived-in rather than formal," Francesca explains. "That tension between luxury and comfort, shadow and warmth, gives the pieces their freshness."

And you can really make your IKEA sofa feel custom with this, mixing and matching the fabrics. Francesca suggests pairing the vintage chenille moss jacquard with the mohair velvet; "The contrast in texture creates depth, while the harmony in color keeps everything cohesive and elevated."

Bemz has covers that slip over all kinds of IKEA furniture, including its sofas, armchairs, bed frames, office chairs, and pillows. You can also select from different fits, whether that's minimalist, maximalist, 'megamalist', loose, or regular, which only gives you more ways to customize your piece. My advice would be to mix a more contemporary sofa silhouette with one of these more vintage-inspired covers, to ensure it still looks design-forward and not too traditional. For that, you want something comfortable, something that will anchor your layout, but also stop-you-in-your-tracks stylish, that won't date. Finding a sofa that scores on all three is possible, but it helps to have a strong idea of what you're looking for, and for that, I always find it helpful to start with what you definitely don't want.

A sofa is a big purchase. So while the latest sofa trends are, of course, appealing, you don't want to accidentally find yourself with a couch that feels dated the following season. A new year of designs means that, naturally, some sofa styles have fallen out of favor — hence why I'm on a mission to find all of 2026's outdated sofa trends to avoid any unwanted design mishaps.

However, avoiding outdated sofa trends is less about chasing the latest fads and more about finding a seat or sectional that blends contemporary appeal and timelessness. So, to start, I asked the experts what sofa styles they are avoiding this year, and what to look for instead; here's what they told me to avoid in 2026.

1. L-Shaped Sofas

L-shaped sofas are one of the most popular sofa design styles for their ability to blend form and function. They can help get the most out of a small living room layout and even divide a larger, open-concept room. However, they are no longer the 'go-to' style in 2026, say designers.

"While L-shaped sofas certainly still have their place, they can feel less refined than a deep, well-proportioned straight sofa paired with an ottoman," says Louise McGarry, creative director of Studio Braw. L-shaped sofas and sectional ideas can feel clunky, while a deep-set sofa and ottoman combination tends to open up the room, allowing for easier movement, and creating a more sociable layout — particularly when entertaining.

"This combination not only feels more elegant, but you can also try introducing a contrasting fabric through the ottoman," Louise adds.

2. Supersized Curved Sofas

Curved sofas have been one of the biggest trends over the past couple of years, but it looks like 2026 is calling for a curb on supersized curved sofas. "Curved sofas still have their place, but they arguably peaked in 2025 and are now being used more selectively, rather than as a default statement," Louise explains.

What does this actually mean? Rather than sticking one large, curved sofa in a living room as a 'shortcut' to curating a trendy space, think of why that style may (or may not) actually work in your specific space. Is the curve echoing the curves in the architecture or patterns in the room? Is it providing a contrast in an otherwise boxy layout? Or are you just choosing it because you saw it on someone's Pinterest board?

2026 is all about intentional design, so don't choose a curved sofa simply because you like it — think more carefully about whether it's the right silhouette for your space, and the specific way you exist within it.

3. Cool, Gray Colors

Gray is arguably the most controversial color to decorate with these days (although subtle gray can definitely still look chic). Nonetheless, it's a sofa color most designers say to avoid.

"Flat, cool grays tend to date a space quickly," explains Derek Miller, lead interior designer at Lauren Thomsen Design. Today's color trends lean toward a softer, warmer selection of shades. Think earthy colors and elevated neutrals. "I lean toward nuanced, atmospheric tones that shift with light and feel more enduring," adds Derek.

Obviously, you still want a sofa color that will stand the test of time, but it pays to be bold with your shade and saturation in 2026. Playing it too safe rarely reads well.

4. Ultra Low Sofas

While I've become quite a fan of long and low furniture, Derek warns that "Instagram-inspired, minimalist low-profile sofas feel anonymous, and are designed more to blend in than to stand out." In the wrong context, this can lead to your sofa lacking the personality that makes a room feel unique.

"However well made, these styles lack depth, narrative, and any real point of view," he adds. Plus, they can be hard to get out of! "We are seeing less of the overstuffed, ultra-low sofas and are looking for more sofas with intentional proportion, personality, and unique silhouettes," adds Derek.

To steer clear of this outdated sofa trend, choose a sofa with a clear point of view and strong proportions — pro tip: "The most timeless choices feel intentional, well-crafted, and able to evolve naturally within a layered space," says Derek.

5. Prioritizing Cost Over Quality

"I think what's really on its way out is the fast and cheap furniture movement we saw really wind up during Covid," says Anna Kroesser, interior designer at Kroesser + Strat Design.

More and more people are prioritizing quality sofas or are taking the time, energy, and effort to source a vintage (or new) iconic sofa design. Taking time to find these quality, unique pieces leads to an endlessly more interesting space.

"I think collectively our world is waking up to the fact that everything in life not only should not, but cannot be disposable," adds Anna. "Plus, it is so special to collect things over a lifetime and have heirloom-quality pieces that you can eventually pass down through the generations."

Choosing the right sofa really comes down to context. Consider where the sofa will live — its setting should guide your choices. Though there are a few outdated sofa trends to consider avoiding, ultimately, the best sofa for your space is about striking a balance between comfort, proportion, and the atmosphere you want to create.

Does the placement of your sofa give you a great view out of your living room windows? Do you have it pushed against a wall, perhaps to maximize floor space, or angled toward the television? Maybe it’s positioned in front of a fireplace? The location of your sofa is one of the most important factors to consider when deciding between living room layout ideas. Sofa islands remove most of the guesswork, especially in spaces where there’s no obvious ‘right’ place to position it. "They allow a refreshing perspective on space and layout compared to traditional sofa-edged rooms," agrees sensory designer Lauren Davies.

So, what actually is a sofa island? Read on to discover why this seating arrangement is a shortcut to flexibility and better flow in contemporary living rooms.

So, What Is a Sofa Island?

A sofa island is a single-seating hub created with a back-to-back, dual, or double-sided arrangement of two or more sofas, most often using modular components. Positioned toward the middle of a space, it immediately becomes an inviting spot from multiple directions. "They’re commanding the center of a room rather than hugging the walls," explains Jenna Chused, interior designer and principal of Chused & Co.

"Accessible from at least two sides, sofa islands always become destinations in themselves," she adds. Rather than pointing people toward one spot or another, they are an adaptable choice that works well in today’s multi-functional living spaces. "They give multiple seating areas in the footprint of one, breaking down the hierarchy of a single focal point," she shares.

"A sofa island skips the idea that everything has to face one direction and instead moves seating to the center of a living space, almost like a piece of architecture," adds Chris Cooke, head of design at King Living.

"A modular configuration of sofas allows the seating to adapt and work from all sides, meaning you activate the center of your space and can reconfigure it when necessary," he adds.

Why are Interior Designers Embracing Sofa Islands?

Floating sofas away from the wall can make a room feel larger, rather than creating flat, empty zones around them. Just remember, though, that when a sofa moves away from the wall, you’ll see every side of it — if a design doesn’t look gorgeous from all angles, it’s unlikely to work well configured in an island.

"Sofa islands mean you can face different directions and create the feeling of several rooms in a single space," says Florence Jallet, a Paris-based interior designer and creative director of Batiik Studio.

Sofa islands create a more social effect compared to fixed designs. "Unlike a traditional sofa, islands offer a wide range of seating for reading, socializing, and entertaining, making them a far more convivial choice," says Florence. "While they were previously reserved just for movie or television rooms, we’re now using them as a home’s signature piece to bring the whole space to life."

"In the same way a kitchen island works, a sofa island provides a central focus for a hive of activity," agrees Lauren Davies from HEKA London. "They reflect the wider interior trend toward broken-plan living, where spaces are zoned according to function rather than being separated or closed off completely. A sofa island allows spaces to become gently divided without walls."

These architectural concerns, alongside the ability to divide spaces without sacrificing natural light, are another key factor behind the success of sofa islands.

"In cities, there are more new-build developments than ever before, which tend to have wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows," explains Ed O’Donnell, co-founder and creative director of Angel O’Donnell. "This arrangement solves the conundrum of clients having to decide between facing their windows or compromising the position of their television. Dual- and multiple-aspect seating means nobody has to choose."

Where Do Sofa Islands Work Best?

A sofa island is best suited to larger rooms with enough floor space for generous clearance, making it a central hub as opposed to an awkward obstacle. "Think of a sofa island as creating a natural spine through your room, designed to serve distinct zones within it. Scale is therefore critical," explains Jenna Chused. "You need at least three to four feet of circulation space around all sides to create natural pathways that make rooms feel navigable." As a design concept, therefore, they’re best avoided in small rooms with limited circulation.

While they lend better definition to different spaces within an open-plan room, sofa islands work especially well in living rooms with multiple focal points. "Don’t use a sofa island just to be different," says interior designer Ed O’Donnell. "Use it to maximize multiple views; otherwise, you’ll be sacrificing a lot of space for nothing."

Positioning one side of the sofa to face the television for zoning out in the evening, the other pointing toward a dining table or kitchen to encourage conversation, and still another looking out to a window for a moment of relaxation and reflection will give a sofa island purposes that more than make up for its space on the floor plan.

Modularity is key. "A sofa island that allows real reconfiguration, rather than just the addition of a chaise, allows you to rearrange components as your space evolves," explains King Living’s Chris Cooke.

King Living's Kato Sofa, for example, can be expanded, reduced, or reoriented at will. The Anagram Sofa, created by Vitra with Swiss duo Panter&Tourron, can be configured with multiple elements in endless different combinations, while Gallotti & Radice’s sinuous Evolis Next sofa (launched last year) can be arranged back-to-back or in L-shapes to make it accessible from both sides.

"This adaptability is what makes a sofa island a long-term investment," adds Chris.

A sofa island transforms a living room into even more of a social hub. Reflecting a desire to create homes that serve more than one purpose, the concept also gives open-plan spaces definition and purpose, where walls no longer dictate the position of furniture. It’s no wonder, then, that an increasing number of interior designers are pulling seating away from the walls to give it center stage.

There is no denying that sofas are a big-ticket item when buying furniture. It's typically a 'buy once, buy well' kind of deal (at least, we hope). So what happens when a year into your new purchase, you decide you don't really like it anymore? Or it doesn't suit the season? Sounds like you need a sofa jacket.

Sofa jackets, or sofa covers, have copped a bad rap in the past; something seen as dated or stuffy. Well, I'm here to argue that sofa jackets are actually a practical, versatile, and stylish solution to never getting bored with your sofa again. Maybe you're slightly regretting embracing that bold, floral sofa trend come winter; with a sofa jacket, you can replace it with a warmer, solid color, or even a bouclé cover, giving your living room seating a temporary makeover.

In the modern home, versatility and customization are key to designing a space that lives with you through the seasons. So, whether you love the sofa you already have or are actively searching for an upgrade, here's why I'm convinced everyone should have a 'spring' and 'winter' jacket for their sofa.

What Is a 'Sofa Jacket'?

The sofa you choose is something you'll likely (hopefully) live with for seven to 10 years, so it needs to reflect not only what you like today, but how your lifestyle and home may evolve. "When two people are making that choice together, it can become even more complex," says Jacob Peres, cofounder of sofa company, Cozmo.

"We developed the Sofa Jacket at Cozmo in response to this," he explains. "It is a tailored, fully removable cover designed to be taken on and off with ease, allowing the sofa's appearance to change without replacing the piece itself." I like to think of a sofa cover like curating a capsule wardrobe for your couch. You may have the base layers down, but everyone needs a lightweight jacket for spring and a chic, cold-weather coat for when winter blows in.

Seasonally, there are natural shifts in sofa design preferences, like print and color. During winter, "customers tend to gravitate towards deeper tones and more tactile materials," says Jacob. Dark brown velvet has been particularly popular in modern living rooms. "Deep green bouclé has also performed strongly this winter; rich, textured, and offering warmth with a more refined finish," adds Jacob.

Yet, as we transition into spring and summer, the palette typically lightens. "There is greater interest in lighter bouclés and woven fabrics, alongside tones such as spring prints," says Jacob.

With the right sofa jacket, you can easily adapt to these changing preferences without making a long-term, high-priced swap. Just remember that performance is just as important as aesthetics, especially if you are sourcing a sofa jacket for when guests (and potential spills) are around. "Sofa jacket fabrics and couch materials need to feel soft and comfortable, but they must also age well and retain their visual strength over time," says Jacob.

Okay, full disclosure: I hugely respect, but am not a huge fan of mid-century-style furniture. The distinctive aesthetic, defined by minimalism, clean lines, and functionality, has been trending for quite some time now (I think thanks largely to members' club Soho House), but it's the way it has flooded our social feeds (and subsequently our homes) that I dislike most. My advice? Invest in one statement mid-century-style piece, add a few complementary accessories, and then stop.

For just £550, it's surprisingly good-looking, but if the first (and only) review is anything to go by, it offers way more than just good looks. “Assembled by myself, and it was relatively easy," they write. But here's the real kicker: "Surprisingly, the most comfortable sofa we’ve ever had, and the corner cushions are so fun to build forts and dens out of in the day and reassemble into a super grown-up, stylish mid-century vibe in the evenings."

It's time to start putting more effort into the secondary moments in our interiors, and upgrading your guest bed situation is the perfect place to start. Now, all that's left is to plan how to style your new sofa bed.

It was late last year, when I was looking for sofas that would still deliver before Christmas that I first really came across Cozmo sofas. Having launched in 2023, it's a relatively new player in the world of sofas, and I don't often recommend a couch to someone until I've actually sat on it myself.

However, Cozmo is definitely a brand on the rise. It's soon to launch its fifth sofa design — a collaboration with design studio Pearson Lloyd — and the brand is also now stocked by John Lewis, helping to connect to an even wider audience. If you haven't experienced one yourself though, the question remains — are its sofas actually any good?

To get some firsthand experience, I headed down to Cozmo's showroom in London's Shoreditch to learn a bit more about its designs and to test them for myself. Having spent the last few months sitting on sofa after sofa for Livingetc's guide to where to buy a sofa, I have a benchmark to compare them against, across the industry.

Before we get into a sofa-by-sofa breakdown, first, let me tell you a little about what sets Cozmo apart and what might make it the sofa brand for you. I've personally vowed to never buy a sofa again unless it comes flat-packed in a box, or is at least very modular, having been burned by ordering a sofa that wouldn't fit through my hallway door into my living room. Cozmo is technically a sofa-in-a-box brand; however, it doesn't have some of the same connotations you might have had with this type of sofa before.

Sofas that come flat-packed have historically been foam filling only — for a competitor like Swyft, for example, the majority of its sofas are foam, sometimes memory foam, which is comfortable, but a little on the firm side (though, just to note, Swyft recently launched a feather-filled sofa, too). Cozmo's offering feels decidedly plumper. The showroom assistant showed me the make-up inside one of its seat cushions, where you'll find a foam base with a sort of feather 'puffer jacket' on top, channeled so the feathers don't clump irregularly. It's a nice idea in that it gives you the best of both worlds — you still get a modern, structured form, but softer edges and a more of a squish when you sit on it.

I also feel that Cozmo is on the right track by limiting its offering to something with a particular design point of view. These are not generic sofa designs, as such. The first four of the brand's sofa types were designed with studio Raw Edges, bringing a sense of signature style to its core range. The woven tape edges you see on the sofas are a connecting design detail across many of the sofas — in some instances, it offers a charming rawness to its design quality, while on other sofas and in different color combinations, it feels elevated, even like fine tailoring.

The brand makes all its sofas here in the UK from sustainable materials. Generally, they're made to order, but if you order an in-stock one, you could have it in as little as a week. All the designs are modular, to some degree, so if you want to change up your set-up after a time, you can. The covers are also removable and replaceable, too. That could be if you think yours needs a refresh after some years, but it could also be just because you fancy a new look for the next season.

So, let's take a look at the different sofas, shall we?

Cozy

I get the sense that everything started with the Cozy for Cozmo. One of this design's signatures is its slim arms, which make it great for small spaces. Despite its streamlined frame, it is as cozy as the name suggests. The seat cushions have the brand's signature feather puffer jacket, so you sink into the seat. It means it doesn't totally spring back, so it needs a little plumping every now and again to look its best, but nowhere near as much as you would if it were a full feather-fill cushion.

The back cushions are feather-filled, too, and feel opulent to recline back into, while you'll also get some side cushions that make up for the slim arm, with some versatility if you need to squash more people onto your sofa.

The version in the showroom had a chaise, which isn't super deep (on purpose, to not block too much of the bay window of the London terraces the designers envisaged the sofa in), but it's wide enough that it makes for a generous sit.

Float

I'm a sucker for a boxy modular sofa — it's often what I buy for my own home, so not only was I drawn to Cozmo's Float design straight away, but I've got some history to compare it to. In my experience, this style of sofa isn't necessarily forgiving to sit on. They're usually on the firmer side, as they have to be to keep their structured silhouette. However, I found it a surprisingly soft landing when I came to sit on this one, again thanks to the makeup of Cozmo's inners for its sofas.

There are some clues in the design, however. The corners are a little softer and less precise, but this softness brings a different charm to this style of sofa that I haven't seen much elsewhere. In the showroom, the sample is in Cozy's cream textured weave — and to be honest, it wasn't my favorite textile from the collection to the touch, but it is a good all-rounder in terms of durability and for versatility within a design scheme.

Pillow

Cozmo's Pillow sofa shares a lot of its design DNA with the Cozy, in that its body is almost the same, but it has larger, more cushioned armrests, giving it a more dramatic, cocooning silhouette. I say almost, as there's a small difference with how the base wraps around, but in general, it's more about the style than offering a vastly different sit. Yet, it's more the kind of sofa you can prop yourself up in the corner of.

The dark green boucle jacket for this sofa, pictured, is darker than in the photographs, and with its white cotton weave trim, it makes for a striking figure, almost like a piped tuxedo jacket.

Rest

Cozmo's Rest was designed to answer the question — can I have a sofa with a higher back? Often, sofas with higher neck rests and head supports can end up looking a little 'Lazy Boy'-ish, something that doesn't necessarily fit with the brand's design philosophy. However, by keeping the rest of the sofa on the slighter side, it's allowed for a higher back rest without the whole design feeling overpowering and clunky.

The back itself is an interesting construction — you can see it in the gallery above. It uses an external board as an insert to create the height. It can also be removed, creating a lower back where the excess sofa cushion hangs down.

The finish on the showroom model was the Chenille weave, possibly my favorite of Cozmo's offerings. It has the look and feel of linen, but is more durable and doesn't sag. It's a beautiful laidback aesthetic.

Ah, the Togo Sofa by Ligne Roset. Not just a classic but part of the fabric of what makes Livingetc what we are. It has been featured so many times on our pages across the decades, in so many different types of homes, that it has almost become a signifier of what it means to be a Livingetc reader — to like good design that feels timeless, is super comfortable, and fits into the modern way of life.

The reason the Togo is such an iconic sofa is that its low, cocooning shape invites you to hunker down into it and nestle in or lie across it watching TV, while also having the perfect shape to sit up and have conversations. Ligne Roset's Togo Sofa is also completely modular, sold in sections, so it can be as big or have as many corners as you like.

But guess what? It's not the only iconic low-slung sofa on the market, and it's not the only way to create that smart-casual vibe it does so well. These alternative Togo couches do the job just as well and are just as classic-looking, even though some are completely brand new.

1. Pumpkin Sofa by Ligne Roset

While Ligne Roset's Togo sofa has become a symbol of modern design, the sofa brand (though it's so much more than just that) has so many other options in its catalogue, so many with unexpected shapes, rounded edges, and striking silhouettes. Take the Pumpkin by Pierre Paulin, for example.

"The Pumpkin is characteristic of Paulin's revolutionary style, as initiated at the end of the 1950's," explains Asa Hirst, UK director of Ligne Roset. "And as its name suggests, it's evocative of a giant pumpkin, welcoming the user with its voluptuous shell. A radical icon of comfort and a timeless expression of modernity and style, that still remains relevant and bold."

It's available in multiple sizes, from a single chair to a family-length sofa.

2. Standard Sofa by Edra

Italian brand Edra's Standard sofa sets the benchmark with contemporary, comfortable, and versatile designs. It's deep, it's low, you can sprawl across it and configure it in any size you want. The back cushions even fold up or down depending on whether you want to sit forward or lean against them — it's a classic piece for a reason.

"When I designed the Standard sofa, I wanted to respond to a widespread need for versatility, using a language of essential, pared-back design," says its designer, Francesco Binfare, who has collaborated with Edra many times. "The concept is deceptively simple: a soft cushion conceals an internal structure with adjustable side supports, articulated via a friction pivot. The complexity lies in the mechanism itself — creating a joint that resists wear over time was anything but straightforward."

3. Tufty-Time by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia

The Tufty-Time was designed by Patricia Urquiola for B&BItalia 21 years ago, but it's still going strong — in all its low-slung, modular, comfortable glory. Back in 2005, Patricia set out to merge the spirit of the Chesterfield (exceedingly popular at the time), especially its chunkiness and the way it invited you to sink into it, with a modern sense of relaxation.

Back then, like the Chesterfield, the Tufty-Time was low and straight, its tucked cushions evoking the plucks and darts of the classic buttonback. But it was less enclosed than the Chesterfield, its arms lower, as to invite conversation, freedom of movement, and a sense of airiness around it. But unlike the Chesterfield, it wasn’t retro but forward-looking — and that same mood of conviviality is what designers are so keen to try and emulate today.

"I like seating without high backs because they are double-sided," says designer Jake Arnold. "You can sit down, and part of you can face the room in one direction, the other part can face the group of people at the table in the other way — it’s so sociable."

"It also helps to create a more intimate space as a low back means it doesn't cause any sense of separation," he adds. That affability that so many people are looking for right now can be found in the Tufty-Time, still as relevant now as ever.

4. Evolis Next Sofa by Gallotti&Radice

A modern hero of a sofa, the Evolis Next by Martina and Massimo Castagna for Gallotti&Radice was launched at last year's Salone del Mobile. It instantly became a new sofa design to know, blending together everything that the brand is known for.

Encompassing curves, contemporary flavors, and cotton-candy-soft bouclé all came together in one design that can be modulated to be backless on one half, should you so wish.

"The name 'Evolis' originates from 'evolution', suggesting the idea of future and progress," explains Martina and Massimo Castagna. "A curvy line draws the profile of a fluid and organic shape, giving birth to a continuous, enveloping movement that highlights its minimal yet futuristic aesthetic. It’s an example of a simple form, a pure manifesto."

5. Tolco Sofa by Andrew Martin

It's not just Italians who know how to do iconic, low-slung sofas — British brands are just as capable of creating couch profiles you can't help but want to lie down on and hunker back into.

Case in point: Andrew Martin's Tolco sofa is as deep as it is wide, and as squashy as it is sophisticated. "You can’t help but get super relaxed on it, it's so comfy," says interior designer Dhilnawaaz Khan Trotman, founder of DKT Interiors, who specified it for a recent project. "And sofas like this, that you want to use in a TV room, should be all about comfort."

Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin, is proud of the design. "A low-slung sofa changes the way you inhabit a room," he says. "It relaxes the architecture, lowers the tempo, and invites you to live rather than merely sit. It’s confident, informal, and incredibly comfortable."

6. Lionel Sofa by Schplendid

Brand new sofa brand Schplendid is giving these juggernauts above a run for their money in the low-slung sofa stakes. Set up by Pooky founder Rohan Blacker, its emphasis is on affordable, well-made, and impressively aesthetic sofas that ride the trends as perfectly as they catch the eye.

"The 'Lionel' is probably the design we had the most fun with," Rohan says. "We spent ages obsessing over those sweeping curves on the arms and the side panels, until they felt just right. They remind me of the profiles of those classic Jaguars that I used to look at as a child."

"We wanted something that looked effortlessly cool and louche, but luxurious and properly indulgent when you sink into it," he adds. "The seat almost dares you to curl your legs around it, whilst the back cushion reaches out to meet you like a big cosseting hug. We added the stitched channel tufting for that Art Deco feel, which is very much of the moment again."

7. Solari Sofa by Castlery

When Castlery launched in the UK last year (after successfully selling in Asia and the US for years), it brought with it a whole new tranche of modern, affordable, on-trend, and Insta-ready furniture options. It's line of coffee tables and storage is strong, but its slouchy sofas are even stronger, particularly the Solari sofa in all its modular glory (it can be anything from a two-seater to this yawning L-shape, above).

"Presence. Presence. Presence. That’s what I love about the Solari," says the always-passionate Declan Ee, Castlery co-founder and president. "It’s bold and confident — commanding the room with a strong 70s-inspired silhouette but balanced by soft, sculpted curves that make it feel human and inviting."

"I love how the oversized arms give it weight and character, while the tri-color bouclé brings texture, warmth, and a ‘handsome coat’ vibe to the piece," he adds.

Undoubtedly, the Togo sofa is timeless, but so are all these other slouchy, low-slung sofas, and they might not be so instantly familiar (which can be a very good thing). So if you're looking to buy a sofa that creates the same ambience but isn't anywhere near as ubiquitous, now, hopefully, you know where to start.

I see numerous sofa beds every day as part of my job — from the super lavish (and expensive) to the amazingly clever, budget-friendly styles — but there's one design that I keep coming back to: the ever-popular Habitat Kota 3-Seater Sofa Bed. In 2026, we're asking more of our sofas. No longer are they simply a place to sit — they need to offer something special, have hidden features, charge our phones, conceal storage, and maybe even a bed neatly tucked away somewhere. And they need to be able to do all this while also looking good. Well, it might not tick all those boxes, but DUSK's Lyon Sofa in a Speckled Sand Bouclé seriously impresses, and it'll set you back less than £600.

On first impression, its modern silhouette and soft, subtly textured bouclé fabric are hard to argue with. This Christmas, I spent a total of five nights in three different sofa beds. Throw in a few cross-country train trips, and my back was in all sorts of twists and bends. So, as much as I appreciated my family and friends for putting me up — my gosh, was I happy to get into my own (proper) bed at the end of all of it.

The whole experience has made me clear on one thing: I want to make sure my sofa bed is as comfortable as possible for my future guests. But, considering it's not something you often ever use in your own home, it's hard to actually know what it's like to sleep in (unless you're willing to forgo your own bed for a few nights on the sofa). And it's even harder to test in a store.

So, instead, I'm reverse-engineering my research. Rather than telling you what I've bought, I'm sharing what you — our trusted Livingetc readers — have bought. And when it comes to sofa beds, this year Habitat's Julien Fabric 4-Seater Sofa Bed was a clear winner.

But don't just take it from me (as, truthfully, I haven't slept on it) — take it from the countless reviews that real customers have left:

From the 25th to the 30th of December, there's pretty much one place you're bound to find me at — the sofa. A Christmas special on the telly, and about 600 different tabs of Boxing Day sales open on my phone. A dream day, in many ways. The holiday season can often require a certain level of creativity when it comes to providing multiple family and friends with a comfortable space to sleep, especially if space is limited.

If, like me, you don't have a sofa bed and will be using your living room sofa to create a makeshift sleep space, rest assured that there are plenty of simple tips and tricks to help make your sofa more comfortable and ensure the setup is cozy and restful for guests.

“Turning a regular sofa into a genuinely comfortable overnight setup is absolutely doable — you just need a few thoughtful layers," says Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed. Below, discover exactly how experts recommend you level up your temporary bed.

1. Invest in a Bed Topper

Just like you would when looking to make your bed more comfortable, invest in a mattress topper. "Start with padding," says Jessica of Piglet in Bed. "Use a slim mattress topper or even a neatly folded duvet to add instant softness and help even out any sofa seams."

Interior designer Serena Pitchers of Your Interiors Friend recommends using Zara Home's Washed Linen Topper, specifically. "It comes in a beautiful warm palette of Cinnamon, Light Beige, Oyster White, and Gray, and they are so beautiful that they can be left on top of your sofa all year round. Even better is that they are machine washable, so you can keep the room nice and fresh," she says.

When choosing sheets to go above your topper, Jessica advises natural fabrics for added comfort. "Natural, breathable sheets make a world of difference: crisp cotton percale for that hotel-feel, or easy, lived-in linen if you want to keep things low-maintenance," she says.

2. Create a Makeshift Headboard

"To make the space feel more like a proper bed, build up the ‘headboard’ with a couple of firm cushions behind the pillows, and drape a cozy throw at the foot — no one enjoys waking up with cold toes," says Jessica.

What's more, if you have a choice of sofas to create your temporary bed from, go for the one with removable back cushions and low arms to allow room for layering headboard cushions. "I would suggest going for a deep sofa with loose back cushions which can easily be removed, allowing plenty of depth to use as a temporary sleeping arrangement," adds interior designer Jenny Luck.

If space is especially limited, consider swapping heavy duvets for lighter blankets and quilts. Serena says that she would use "layers of throws and quilts rather than a space-stealing duvet."

From cotton quilts to wool throws and linen bedcovers, there are plenty of types of bedding to use instead of a duvet. But just because you're opting for a lighter weight, don't skimp on the amount — layering will keep your guests warm, and will also nod to the latest bedding trends.

Another tip to keep the setup feeling like a bed rather than a sofa is to go for a flat sheet, which will drape to the floor. Jessica says that this will "disguise the sofa’s shape and metal bits, creating a more considered look."

4. Complete the Setup With Cozy Decor

Think beyond the sofa bed setup itself, and help guests feel comfortable with the surrounding cozy decor, says Jessica, who recommends "a lamp within reach, a spot to tuck away belongings, and fresh towels so guests don’t have to ask."

Just like with the things you should design around a sofa bed, it's important to consider the space and experience sleeping there as a whole.

"If your curtains aren’t blackout, leave an eye mask — your future sleepy guests will thank you," adds Jessica.

These easy steps will absolutely keep guests comfortable and cozy on your temporary bed setup. That said, if you're considering investing in a more permanent sofa bed at some point, look out for the sofa bed buying mistakes to avoid.

In many ways, the holiday season is a dangerous time for your sofa. There's red wine, sticky fingers, and just generally more people squishing in. Of course, that proverbial splash zone becomes even bigger when you take kids and pets into account.

Luckily, we've rounded up some tips for keeping your gorgeous, expensive, and, of course, stylish sofa as clean and protected as possible during the holiday season. When looking at where to buy a sofa, you might have considered a particularly durable fabric, but it's not the case for every home.

Considering everyone's home life is a bit different, we broke these tips out into three scenarios: those who plan to host this holiday season and have a little bit of time before the day, those who are hosting within the week, and those who are hosting in a few hours and need some seriously quick-fix solutions. Whichever situation most describes you right this moment, you'll find helpful tips on protecting your sofa during the soirée and season beyond, each suggestion catered to the time you likely have allotted to "fix" the scenario.

Scenario #1: I'm Hosting Tonight

Alright, alright — let's say you need to start protecting your sofa ahead of a party you're hosting, but you don't have much time to do anything. Enter: throw blankets.

"A high-quality, washable sofa cover or oversized throw is a simple but powerful protection layer," Marta Balazs, founder and interior designer at Embee Interiors, tells me. "It takes the brunt of spills, muddy paw prints, and snack-time accidents, and it can be tossed straight into the washing machine once guests leave."

Of course, you can leave a throw draped on your sofa for protection all season long, but you can also toss one on the bench seat in times of need. Whichever route you choose, try going for "cotton, washable wool blends, or soft knits that can go right into the washing machine after messy hands, pets, or holiday cocoa moments," Mackenzie Collier of Mackenzie Collier Interiors, adds.

Scenario #2: I'm Hosting in the Next Few Weeks

If you don't have a heap of time, but do have a big enough pre-hosting window for an order from Amazon, I'd recommend trying something like Scotchgard or another stain-guard treatment as a means to protect your sofa this winter.

"Applying a professional stain-guard treatment is one of the simplest ways I always advise for my clients with kids and pets to dramatically increase their sofa’s durability," Marta suggests. "These treatments create an invisible barrier that prevents liquids from absorbing into the fibers, giving you crucial extra time to wipe spills before they leave a mark. It’s particularly effective for homes with young children or pets, where accidents are more frequent and harder to control." Just be sure to spot test the treatment on a less-visible section of the sofa first to be sure there are no problems.

Although this is less of a proactive protective tip, Mackenzie also reminds me that you can very easily refresh your sofa ahead of seasonal hosting — whether it's looking a bit dingy from pet hair or errant road salt — by simply "vacuuming between the cushions, rotating pillows, and fluffing inserts so everything feels supportive," she says.

"A quick lint roll [shop on Amazon] for pet hair and a spot clean on any small stains makes a big difference," she adds. "This tiny routine helps your sofa look polished for guests and also extends its life. It is a simple habit that pays off during the busy season."

Scenario #3: I'll Be Hosting in the Future

Let's say you are planning to have people over to celebrate the festive season, or maybe the new year, and you have some time to get your couch care in order. Perhaps you even have the time or the desire to get a new couch entirely.

In that case, experts suggest that you first and foremost look for a couch that's upholstered in performance fabric, like "stain-resistant polyester blends, Aquaclean, or velvet with a tight pile," Marta Balazs tells me. Materials like these "repel spills, resist scratches, and are easy to spot-clean," meaning you can recover from a dog or toddler-related emergency with ease.

Sofa color trends are also your friend, adds Mackenzie Collier. "Mid-toned colors or subtle patterns naturally hide small spills and daily wear," making them a great choice for family homes, she says. Bonus points if you select a performance fabric in one of those shades.

If you're willing to spend a touch more, you could also rock with the great family textile: leather. Because it patinas over time and is easy to wipe and clean, a leather sofa is a wonderful choice for a family home in all seasons of life — but especially the winter and festive season.

And, as a final bonus tip, see if you can find an extra set of the cushions made specifically for the couch you're buying (or already have now). You can keep this extra set stashed away and use it specifically for parties, so that the wear and tear of the primary cushions isn't so apparent.

Bonus tip: Create a Designated Space for Pets

Not interested in all of this hullabaloo, at least as it pertains to your furry friend? Consider skipping it all entirely by setting up an equally enticing designated area for your pets to curl up on, rather than leaving them to the allure of the couch.

"Sometimes the best way to protect a sofa is to make sure pets steer clear of it," notes Joyce Huston of Decorilla. "I find carving out a little spot for them is a great way to do that. A comfortable ottoman or chair made of waterproof and scratch-proof material that they can curl up in is a great solution. It also creates a sense of belonging for your furry friend."

Many might previously have dismissed fringed sofas as too fussy or overly traditional, but designers and brands are now putting their own spin on the look (hello, Soho Home) and bringing it completely up to date. The key? Keeping the look calm rather than chaotic.

“These decorative details can be surprisingly contemporary, especially in a space with clean, graphic lines,” explains sensory designer Lauren Davies from HEKA. “Fringed sofas are a perfect sofa trend for 2026, giving those who love neutrals a way to tap into maximalism more subtly.”

“Fringing adds luxury to even the most restrained sofa designs, too,” says Lauren. “In this project by Smac Studio, the trim along the bottom of the sofa creates an instant feminine edge in a way that catches the eye, interacts with the light, and feels super contemporary for right now. What’s really beautiful is that fringed sofas can look very modern but feel completely soft and comfortable.”

2. Armless Wonders

Sofas without arms, whether as a cut-away effect (for a chaise-style look) or simply stripped off entirely, are a key trend to note. By subtly blurring the boundaries, armless sofas make spaces feel airy and more expansive.

“Armless sofas strike this perfect balance between calm, comfort, and flexibility,” reveals interior designer Juliette Byrne. “Their softer forms and lower profiles prevent a layout from feeling boxed-in, while allowing the eye to travel uninterrupted across a room. To maximize this effect, opt for sofa designs that aren’t too deep (so you remain upright rather than becoming progressively reclined) and have a slightly lower back (so the arrangement doesn’t look or feel imposing).

A central coffee table can act as a visual anchor, but make sure there’s enough space to comfortably move around it from all sides. “You want the room to feel open, so maintaining this sense of flow is essential,” instructs Greig.

The enduring popularity of the iconic Bubble design from Roche Bobois, shown here in one of Katerina’s recent projects. “The sofa’s trademark grooves, tufting, and embracing curves invite touch, create a sense of refuge, and bring a human, grounding softness to contemporary living spaces,” she explains. “Classics like this feel very current as their shapes naturally align with our moving shift toward softer, more inviting interiors.”

To make a design icon the highlight of your seating arrangement, position the piece as a focal point and give it room to breathe. The restrained palette here, for example, allows the form to take center stage and emphasizes its 'touch-me' textures.

5. Hints of Pattern

A sofa in a wow-factor print or a statement motif is sure to catch the eye, but it doesn’t necessarily tick the ‘timeless’ box. Is it possible to have a patterned sofa that won’t stick out or become too much of a focal point? Yes, if this latest upholstery trend is anything to go by — interior designers are increasingly using just flashes of patterned textiles rather than covering sofas entirely in them.

“There’s a real shift towards using pattern more confidently, but not everyone wants a sofa that’s fully covered in it,” agrees Rebecca Hughes. “Using pattern as an accent creates just the right amount of visual interest while keeping the overall look calm and balanced.”

In this space, the designer opted for stripes. “Layering pattern in this way adds depth without things tipping into ‘too much’, allowing other elements and surrounding materials to stand out,” she explains. “Stripes are particularly relevant right now, especially when they’re not too bold or high-contrast. For a feeling of total intimacy, the trend is to push corner sofas snugly against a wall, embracing the natural boundaries of your space and creating a defined (but no less inviting) zone for social interaction and engaging conversation.

Modular sofas make being creative and flexible with your seating arrangement simple, but we’ve noticed an emerging trend that goes one step further. Sofas with built-in (but easily movable) surfaces, including the snappily-named Connect from Muuto, shown here, and Molteni’s newly-unveiled Emile, are becoming ever more popular. Is it any wonder?

“This progression speaks to the way people are truly living now,” agrees Esra Kumbasar, design director at Accouter. “We’re naturally reaching for surfaces, whether to pick up a laptop, a book, or a cup of coffee, and having that built into our sofa design is a quiet kind of comfort in our spaces.”

“Modular seating with integrated table elements is a thoughtful approach to form and function, allowing interiors to feel refined rather than overly designed or full of clutter,” he explains. “A sofa with a table feels like a singular, considered piece that supports both our aesthetics and our lifestyles.”

8. Brown Leather Is Back

After something of a hiatus, we’re noticing that many interior designers are welcoming leather sofas in rich tones of chocolate, cinnamon, and cognac back into the fold. Good news, we say, as the material is perfect for balancing sophistication with comfort (as this Studio Duggan project demonstrates beautifully).

“This resurgence speaks to our collective desire for spaces that feel grounded, and the beauty of the material lies in the way it anchors a room with effortless warmth and luxury,” believes global design authority Martin Waller. “A brown leather sofa is evocative, tactile, and has a rich patina that only improves with age.”

To make a brown leather sofa look and feel contemporary, balance the material with harder elements — sleek metallics, rustic stone, and grainy woods — as the contrast can make even the most love-worn leather upholstery appear sleeker, brighter, and more striking.

9. Puffy, Not Polished

“Sofas should first and foremost be comfortable, but that should never mean compromising on style,” believes Caroline Milns from Zulufish. For a sofa trend that embraces both ergonomics and aesthetics, look to the increasing numbers of puffy shapes and sculptural forms dotted around the design landscape.

You have just bought your dream sofa. You did everything right; you triple-measured every door frame, saved up for months, and even splurged on the white-glove delivery. Upon arrival, the sofa is even more beautiful than you could have imagined, and the setup process goes seamlessly. Exhausted but unbelievably excited, you at long last move to take a seat, exhaling as you plop down onto the plush cushions, only to realize... It's not comfortable, like, at all.

For you, I hope this anecdote is nothing more than a cautionary tale. But for many — especially those shopping for the best couch or sofa online — this is real life. And it's as utterly deflating as it sounds. Your sofa is the centerpiece of your living room, and it's also one of the biggest investments you'll make when decorating a home, meaning it needs to be totally, entirely, 100% to your liking. That said, it's also extremely difficult to return a sofa, which means that for anyone living with this nightmare, you'll most likely just make do.

1. Add Pillows

For starters — and you might have thought of this one already — the easiest and simplest way to make your couch more comfortable is to add throw pillows, as well as lumbar pillows specifically.

Lumbar or bolster throws "are especially helpful for people with back pain or who prefer firmer support," says Jennifer Jones, the principal designer at San Francisco's Niche Interiors. Mix those "in with larger square pillows for a more collected look."

Ksenya Malina of New York studio Time & Place Interiors agrees, but cautions against a size-blind approach when shopping. "Pillows should always be coordinated with the scale of the sofa, so don't go overboard," she tells me. "A sleek sofa with a low back will look better paired with petite pillows at 16 inches."

2. Toss In a Blanket

Adding a cozy blanket is another great option for cozying up an uncomfortable sofa. You can drape a throw across the back of the sofa for added support or texture, for instance, or perhaps even on the seat for a softer sit. Adding a throw also allows you to further customize the look of the couch according to your own tastes and design sensibilities.

"To up the cozy factor on a hard-cushioned or a leather sofa, I recommend tossing a throw blanket in a beautiful natural fiber like cashmere or mohair," Ksenya suggests. "It gives warmth and the sensation of luxurious comfort."

You could even use queen-size throw blankets, adds Kimbilyn Charbonneau of Kim Joy Design. "Most sofa blankets at home goods stores are very small. My trick is to use bedding blankets, so there is plenty to snuggle up in or share if need be."

3. Add Somewhere to Rest Your Feet

Perhaps your couch is uncomfortable when you sit in it a certain way. Or perhaps it's only comfortable when you sit in it a certain way. Whatever side of that coin you're experiencing, an ottoman could make it easier to sit in whichever manner you prefer.

A floating ottoman, for instance, whether storage or traditional, allows loungers an extra place to put their feet, as well as an opportunity to recline perhaps a touch more than they would otherwise, thereby elevating the sitting experience.

"Whether it's a shapely footstool, a storage ottoman, or a cushioned pouffe, pulling up an extra piece of furniture can help you take a load off. Just make sure that the ottoman's size lines up with the seat height of the sofa," Ksenya advises. "Ottomans are also flexible furniture pieces that can be repurposed for extra seating or for holding a cocktail tray." Great advice, indeed.

4. Consider the Room as a Whole

Bear with me — what if your sofa is actually more comfortable than you think, but it's the room that's the problem? Laetitia suggests as much when coming up with tips to share on the topic.

"Sometimes the comfort issue isn’t the sofa itself but the room around it," she explains. "Pulling the sofa forward off the wall and grounding it with a proper rug instantly creates a more enveloping seating zone — the kind that invites people to actually stay awhile."

It's almost like an optical illusion or a placebo effect.

5. Refluff and Redo

Although this tip might seem a bit more involved than the others, it is a good option for those who feel fresh out of them: restuff your cushions. You don't necessarily have to remove what's already in there, but adding some additional fill might make your sitting experience that much more comfortable.

Or, you can also ask the professionals to help you with this part. Take your cushions "to an upholstery shop and ask them to just add more padding," says Alykhan Velji of Aly Velji Designs. "A simple and easy solution to get more life out of your sofa."

Indeed, a small investment that can completely save the large one you just made.

The holidays may bring a potent reminder that it's time for a sofa bed upgrade, but these are still pieces that will live in your home long after the season is over. That said, it's crucial to style your sofa bed like it's far from temporary.

After you've spent one Christmas with a sofa that isn't comfortable enough, big enough, or doesn't give you the option for a sofa bed you need to house extra guests, it's often a big priority to get sorted. Yes, it's pretty late in the year to be thinking about a new sofa in time for Christmas, but that's what quick delivery sofas are for.

Call me smug, but I'm currently waiting for delivery of a new sofa I ordered back in the summer, so I can't wait to be road-testing it this festive season. Some brands offer next-day delivery; others within a week; and some will just squeeze through in time for Christmas Day if you order now. So, here's a rundown of where you can still shop for a sofa for 2025 delivery, with some guidance on what you can expect from each of these brands. I've been testing endless sofas this year, so I've gotten hands-on with the majority of them to some degree, and can give you a little advice on how to shop for a sofa quickly, even if you don't have time to go to a showroom.

1. Swyft

Swyft started its life out as purely a sofa-in-a-box company, but having just opened its first store in London's Islington, the brand has blossomed into a full-home furniture shop. However, its box-based roots play well into a fast and easy delivery service, as the majority of its sofas come ready to build yourself and are guaranteed to fit through even the narrowest of hallways. In fact, the majority of Swyft's styles are in the 'In Time for Christmas' shop on site.

I've owned a few Swyft sofas over the years, and its system for building them is very simple — we're talking elements that slot together in moments (if you can get the movement right first time) rather than having to fiddle around with an Alan key for hours.

Having, in recent times, tested a lot of Swyft's sofas in a John Lewis store, I'd suggest they're more on the firm side, using foam fillings, but I still count them as comfortable. They're also super durable, and easy-to-clean, so you don't need to worry about guest spills ruining your Christmas.

2. John Lewis

There are quite a few of John Lewis's sofas and chairs available for delivery in just seven days, across a pretty wide range of styles, making it somewhere definitely worth looking at in your quest for a pre-Christmas sofa.

John Lewis's sofas are good quality on the whole, and are rigorously tested, however, you might find slightly differing levels of comfort and finish, depending on what you're looking from. Rather than running you through my favorites here, take a look at my recent John Lewis sofa reviews for some firsthand experience. However, there are a few new styles in quick delivery sofas that are worth exploring, too.

Not every sofa in every configuration is available for quick delivery, so you might not find your exact match is going to come in time for Christmas, but it's worth looking through the 7-day section, still.

3. Cozmo

I'll be honest, Cozmo is a little bit of a new discovery for me as a sofa brand, but for its quick delivery sofa offering, I thought it was worth bringing to your attention (while I wait to get hands-on with its sofas myself). It's an independent brand, and specializes in easy-build sofas that come in small boxes, so you don't have to worry about access problems as well as your Christmas shopping.

In Cozmo's pre-Christmas section, you'll find a mix of 1-2 week and 3-4 week timeframes for delivery, across a range of different styles and colors. Its style of sofa is modern, but plump-looking, and I have high hopes that a sofa such as the Pillow is as comfortable as it looks. The brand tells me that they have one of the lowest return rates in the sector, which is a promising sign if you ask me.

4. Next

Before you get too excited, when you first look at Next's Christmas sofa range, you might think that, for once, you're getting to choose between the full collection of colors and textiles. However, once you start to root around in the individual product listings, you will again find that only certain styles are available for pre-Christmas delivery, while many others are on an 11-week order.

Still, there are good sofas to be found — this Jasper Conran Chiswick sofa might only be available in orange velvet for a three-week delivery, but it's a bold modern design I can get behind. For its comfortable Houghton deep-relaxed corner sofa, you can get only its Tweedy Chenille in Mid-Natural for a 5-day delivery, while other textiles will take 9 weeks. One of my favorites, when I tested in-store, was the classic Erin buttonback sofa. This one's available in a few more colors on quick delivery, though again mostly in a Tweedy Chenille finish.

5. Sofa Club

Sofa Club is another sofa brand that I wasn't super familiar with, however, I took a quick turn around its Lakeside showroom when Christmas shopping recently, and was suitably impressed. Yes, as a brand, it speaks to my more minimalist design style, and a lot of its sofas are only available in a very muted palette (though they introduced sofas in a sage green and saffron yellow earlier this year), but if you share its point of view, I think it's a store to definitely check out.

It has a pretty large range in its pre-Christmas delivery section — I'm particularly on board with the Kate modular sofa, and the Marisa is one I tried in store, and felt it looked much more expensive than its £1,899 price tag.

I'm going to head back to do some more rigorous testing of these sofas soon, but if you want to see for yourself first, there are showrooms in Hertford, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Essex that you can head along to.

6. Sofology

Did you know one of Sofology's sofas won the 'best sofa' award at the Livingetc Awards this year? Unfortunately, the Lunar isn't in the brand's offering for pre-Christmas delivery, but there are still a few cool modern styles to choose from.

If you're after a recliner, the Paramount or Bailey is for you, but if I were picking from this range, it'd definitely be the Adler — and I'm particularly into this Lifestyle Mottled Fabric Marble for it.

I've been to a good few Sofology events and showrooms over my time as an interiors journalist, and I will say, you tend to get something very comfortable for a really good price. Delivery on pre-Christmas sofas is from 14 days — but you need to make sure you don't buy one with something with a longer lead time, or else your order will be grouped for the later date.

7. Loaf

I'd argue that Loaf is one of the most widely known, aspirational places to buy furniture, so you might be surprised to learn the brand offers quick delivery sofas in time for Christmas. However, there's a healthy range of brilliantly squishy sofas you could buy and still get in time for the main event.

Though I've never owned a Loaf sofa, I've been to many a showroom, and they are as plump and welcoming as you'd expect. I've had friends who haven't got along with theirs in the end — perhaps a little too squishy — but really, this isn't the place you go when firm and structured is your preference.

The Squishmeister sofa bed is still in stock for delivery pre-Christmas, so if you've yet to furnish your guest bedroom, you might just be in luck, or else I'm looking at the elegant Slow Riser as one of my top picks.

Just before you get too excited about ordering any, put your postcode into the Christmas delivery checker to make sure they can still get it to you in time.

It might be, after all these recommendations, that you just can't find the sofa you actually want in time — my advice? Don't compromise. January-you won't thank you for it. Maybe you just need a few tricks to make your sofa look more luxurious right now, and start your sofa shopping in the new year.

Sofa beds often get a bad reputation for being as temporary as the weekend guests they host. However, this need not be the case. What's more, according to interior experts, there are a few things to design around a sofa bed that will help guests feel more at home — and as though the sleep set-up is more intentional.

It goes without saying that investing in one of the best sofa beds should be your first port of call. But the second? Double-duty decor, like a side table that doubles up as storage, a bookshelf that serves as a divider, and purposeful nearby sockets that make charging tech easy. There should also be enough space to open out the bed, so it doesn’t feel like guests are putting you out (instead of you putting them up).

Instead: “Designing around a sofa bed simply requires treating the space in both scenarios equally,” says interior designer Jen Baxter. “You want it to feel like a proper guest room and a comfortable den or office — not a compromise or an afterthought." So, without further ado, here are designers’ design must-haves to add around any sofa bed.

1. Layered Lighting

Whether it’s your garden room or a small spare room that doubles as an office by day and a guest room by night, lighting schemes can make all the difference to the look and feel of a space. And when it comes to the room where your sofa bed is, experts suggest that the same rules apply.

"Use a mix of soft overhead light, bedside or floor lamps, or a dimmable option,” suggests Monika Puccio, buying director at Sofa Club. “Lighting defines comfort and flexibility. Guests may want to read, relax, or wind down — not be stuck with only harsh overhead lighting. So layered lighting creates a cozy atmosphere and gives them control over brightness."

2. Include Accessible Surfaces

Modern bedrooms are designed a little differently from guest spaces. For starters, most guests won’t need bundles of wardrobe space to store their clothing. Nor will they necessarily need a vanity unit to get ready at. However, there’s a 99.9% chance they will need some accessible surfaces to place their prized possessions, like their phone, glasses, and a glass of water.

This is why Monika recommends including a small side table or shelf, a basket or drawer for personal items, and easy access to outlets for charging devices.

“Guests feel more at home when they can keep things organized and within reach,” she notes. “Even a small nightstand or trunk at the foot of the bed adds practicality and makes the space feel intentional, not temporary.”

Now that the temperatures have dropped, you can never have enough layers to keep guests cozy and comfy.

And interior designer Jen Baxter, founder of Baxter Hill Interiors, agrees. “Layering textures, like grasscloth walls, a wool rug, and a chunky throw, adds warmth and comfort without clutter,” she says. “When the bed is open, everything still feels intentional and inviting, designed to make guests feel at home.”

The good news is that there is no shortage of places to buy bedding. There are also a variety of affordable alternatives to high-end bedding, like Amazon’s Bedding range that looks expensive (but actually isn't).

4. Add a Curtain For Privacy

From bookshelves to plants, clever design additions like these can help multi-functional spaces feel more intentional and private. If space allows, you could always take some inspiration from Eris Koutsoudakis, co-founder at Meraki Design, and add a doorway curtain.

“The room in the image was designed with guests in mind, which is why we added a curtain — it allows the space to be closed off for privacy and creates a cocooning feel when used as a guest room," Eris says. "There’s also a small sink and cupboard tucked away for guests to use, so it functions as a comfortable, self-contained space when needed."

5. Incorporate Thoughtful Details

The last design detail to add to your guest's space? Thoughtful additions, such as artwork, lamps, rugs, books, and flowers, make a space with a sofa bed more inviting.

“These touches bring life and personality, ensuring the space feels harmonious rather than improvised," Sonia Lazowski, founder of Virajo, a Paris-based interior design studio, says.

"In this design, to make the area comfortable for overnight guests, I added a caravane coffee table to hold a lamp — creating a sense of intimacy and offering a practical surface for personal belongings," the expert explains. "The result is a warm, inviting corner, ideal for relaxing or even an afternoon nap."

So, as you can see, a guest room with a sofa bed doesn't have to feel stark, desolate, or void of personality. In fact, it should feel the complete opposite so that it feels like a home away from home.

That said, there are a few common guest room mistakes to avoid to ensure you're not contributing to a cluttered, poorly planned sleep space.

In the past month alone, my (admittedly tiny) apartment has been host to three weekends of out-of-town guests. Having my loved ones near me was, of course, a treat — that's what the holiday season is all about — but am I happy to have my floorspace back after being overrun by air mattresses? Most definitely.

Understandably, a month of mattresses piled on my living room floor had me thinking of more practical options for guest beds. I only have one sofa, so I don't necessarily want to replace it with a less-comfy fold-out bed. And then I found it: entryway beds. It was Pottery Barn's Josie Bed that first caught my eye. Narrow enough to fit into your entry hallway (but could equally work in any multifunctional space), and pulls out into a double-sized sofa bed.

Not everyone has an extra room to convert into a dedicated guest bedroom, so making the most of the space you have is essential during the holiday hosting season. Will it be an entryway idea that will add to the overall style of your space rather than looking too practical? These are the important questions to ask during your search for the perfect piece.

The Josie Daybed from Pottery Barn has a sleek, minimalist style that fits into a wide range of design styles, while the bouclé texture keeps it feeling cozy. It's not necessarily a piece you'll buy on a whim (the price starts at £1,599); however, the investment will get you a multifunctional piece that will save you big time come your next spontaneous sleepover.

But, of course, I'm not going to leave you with only one option. I've found a few other variations that come in different styles and at different price points. Below are six more modern-daybed options to expand your sleeper sofa schemes.

However, no one wants to spend money on a sofa that looks cheap in their space — don't worry, I'd never let you do that. The good news is that in 2025, you don't have to sacrifice form to get high-function with this cloud-sofa style.

Fringing was, at first, a way to make furniture look more polished. "It began as a practical way to finish the raw edges of upholstery before modern hemming techniques existed," explains Marisa Gutmacher from Samuel & Sons, the specialist passementerie and needlecraft house interior designers flock to. After the look first began in France, more elaborate decorative trimmings soon came to signify wealth.

"By the 17th and 18th centuries, lavish trimmings adorned seating in salons and drawing rooms, each application reflecting curation and social status," Marisa adds. "Historic interiors used trimmings for pure grandeur." In the 1920s, the look shifted toward more stylized glamour that continued into the Golden Age of Hollywood — think cocktail bars, smoking lounges, and movie theaters.

Throughout the mid-century modern design era, Scandinavian designers used trims to add texture to furniture in a restrained way. Today, fringed sofas have developed into something more expressive. “Fringes, tassels, welts, and gimps have been around for centuries, but they’ve evolved into something more beautiful than ever,” says New York-based designer Charlotte Lucas. “I now think of them as jewelry for upholstery.”

“They add an unexpected layer of texture, movement, and surprise,” agrees Ester Bruzkus from Bruzkus Greenberg. The look can take on a playful vibe, perfect for today’s layered approach to decoration and design. “Fringing is a shamelessly decorative element, but when you use it in a contemporary context, it becomes something daring, sophisticated, and completely new,” she adds.

Fringed sofas can also feel effortlessly classic, heightening their appeal. “Fringing can make a piece feel truly timeless,” says Erika Morris from Nested Designs. “I love blending old and new, and we’ve used fringing to ground a contemporary sofa silhouette in the context of a Victorian property. There’s something inherently rich about the detailing, making a space feel super sophisticated.”

“Fringing always makes a piece feel more custom and high-end,” agrees Chicago-based designer Kaylan Kane. “When we started seeing a resurgence of fringing and tassels, it was no surprise. Our clients are shifting towards more maximum design and pattern layering, and trims make all these details pop.”

Interior designers are using fringing for an element of decorative surprise. “Fringing is adding dimension and a touch of the unexpected to contemporary projects,” says Marisa Gutmacher from Samuel & Sons. “It taps into a desire for tactility, luxury, and craftsmanship, and designers are using fringed sofas to give spaces a sculptural presence.”

“The secret to making a fringed sofa look cool is all in the juxtaposition with something sharp,” adds Ester Bruzkus. “One should pair it with minimalist forms, raw materials, and clean architectural lines,” she instructs. “That way, the fringe becomes a confident, decorative statement rather than a nostalgic throwback.”
