We’re all a little guilty of treating our bathrooms as day spaces. Somewhere to set you up for the day with an invigorating shower experience and bright lighting.

So does that mean overhauling the entire bathroom? Well, not really. If you’re at the beginning of a bathroom refit, there are a few things you can do from the outset to make sure this is a space for relaxing at night. But if you’ve already got a bathroom you love, there are a few expert-approved tweaks that can make all the difference too. "By the evening, your bathroom should feel less like somewhere you rush through and more like a destination in itself," adds Kunal Trehan, interior designer and founder of Touched Interiors, "a place to decompress, reset and quietly prepare for sleep."

So here are five ways to get the ultimate relaxation space when nighttime falls. Sweet dreams to that.

1. Embrace Darker Color Schemes

"Even if you wouldn’t paint your entire bathroom dark, introducing deeper tones through cabinetry, feature walls or stone creates a more intimate atmosphere after sunset," says Kunal, at Touched Interiors. "Think deep olive, mocha, charcoal or smoked walnut rather than stark white."

2. Layer Your Lighting

"Soft, dimmable lighting at different levels, wall lights, illuminated mirrors and discreet LED lighting beneath vanity units all create a far more calming atmosphere than a single overhead light," says Emma at Kelling Designs.

"They allow the room to transition effortlessly from a bright morning environment to a much softer setting in the evening," adds Sophie Chapman, associate and interior designer at The Vawdrey House. "We also like to introduce low-level lighting such as ankle-height wall washers which offer subtle illumination for late-night visits without disrupting the sense of calm."

The key is to ditch harsh lighting and replace it with soft, ambient illumination.

"Recessed LED strip lighting used subtly around ceilings, niches or floors creates a gentle glow," says Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms, "while LED mirrors offer diffused, glare-free light that feels soothing."

But don’t leave your lighting choices to the last minute — any wiring needs to be factored in from the beginning of your reno.

"Layered lighting and heated floors aren’t things you can style in afterwards," says Lisa Hensby, founder and creative director at Lisa Hensby Design & Build Studio. "They’re build decisions, planned at first fix stage — that calm you feel at 9pm was decided months earlier on a wiring plan."

3. Choose Tactile Materials

Material choices matter just as much as color for a relaxing bathroom mood. So go for textured and tactile finishes that add warmth and depth without overwhelming the space.

"Natural stone, textured porcelain, timber veneers and brushed metals all absorb light differently throughout the day," says Kunal at Touched Interiors. "At night these materials become softer and richer, creating depth that glossy finishes often struggle to achieve."

Look for natural materials like travertine, warm-veined marble, rustic natural wood, limestone and terracotta.

4. Clear the Clutter

For the nighttime bathroom to feel calm and considered, take your cue from the bedroom.

Because just like the bedroom, your bathroom should be a clutter-free space for switching off and unwinding at the end of the day. And all the experts agree, a cluttered room can feel stressful rather than soothing.

So that means effective storage for clear surfaces and visual calm. "Be ruthless about storage," says Lisa Hensby. "Calm comes from simplicity, so give everyday clutter somewhere to live behind closed doors."

Choose concealed storage for stashing everyday toiletries behind closed doors. Neatly stacked shelving is great for keeping essentials to hand and creating a space that feels calm rather than overstimulating before bed.

Wall-hung furniture can work particularly well because it opens up the floor, but that doesn't mean your storage should be boring — far from it. Think outside the box and introduce decorative storage you wouldn't traditionally associate with a bathroom.

"Vintage furniture is being used more to help the bathroom feel more connected to the rest of the home and create a space where you want to spend time rather than just frequent out of routine," adds Damla Turgut, founder and creative director of Otto Tiles & Design. "These layers create a more comforting, lived-in environment that naturally lends itself to an evening wind down."

5. Add Hotel-Inspired Extras

The best night bathrooms borrow heavily from five-star hotels, say the designers.

You know that feeling of soaking in a tub of bubbles in your hotel bathroom during a busy city break — that’s what you want at home too.

So once you have the colors, the textures and the lighting spot on, it’s those little touches that will create the dreamiest bathroom to unwind in at the end of the day.

"Heated floors, oversized towels, upholstered seating where space allows, robes within easy reach and carefully scented candles or diffusers, all contribute to making the evening routine feel more intentional," says Kunal.

Even small luxuries can add up to so much for a relaxed end-of-day routine.

"The finishing touches are equally important," adds Sophie at The Vawdrey House. "Thoughtful styling with artwork, greenery, candles, refillable soap dispensers and tactile accessories help transform a bathroom from a purely practical room into a space where you’ll want to spend time."

Don't forget about the power of scent, whether you prefer lavender, ylang ylang or something deeper and woodier like oak moss.

"We treat fragrance as part of the design, not an afterthought," says Simon Mayhew, founder and creative director at TXTURED. "It sets the atmosphere before your eye has settled on a single surface."

And the key is to make scent a ritual — a subtle signal that switches your bathroom from day to nighttime use.

"Light the candle when the wind down begins, not once you're already in the bath," he adds. "If it doesn't make your shoulders drop, it's the wrong scent, however calming the label claims to be."

I've stepped out of my shower too many times to towels that have completely lost their fluff, making my evening wind-down routine less spa-like and more like summer camp or a travel hostel. No shade, but don't we all want our bathrooms to reflect a bit of considered wellness? It was time to invest in a new set of bath towels. I was looking for something soft, absorbent, quick-drying, and, of course, easy on the eye. How I Tested

First and foremost, the best bath towels need both form and function. Sure, we love a design-forward moment here at Livingetc, but the biggest bath towel mistake to make is choosing something solely based on aesthetics. When trying to elevate your routine, function really matters here.

So, for this review, I kept in mind a few different characteristics. For my specific space, fighting dampness was especially important, hence why I chose the Hydrocotton range. On top of that, I kept track of how the towels looked and felt upon initial review, as well as after use and washing over about a month.

Initial Impression and Design

Full disclosure: I needed a totally new bath set, so I went big. I ordered two bath towels, two bath sheets, two hand towels, and a face cloth in the classic Hydrocotton design in white. Basically, I wanted the simplest, but crisp and elevated design I could get.

And initial impressions knocked it out of the park. The towels come neatly folded with the brand's signature ribbon and paper (a nice touch when you've just invested in a new set of linens), and wow, were they soft. Let's call it how it is: these towels were incredibly plush, expensive-looking, and transformative.

Absorbancy

The main test is how well a towel absorbs water and dries your skin. The worst feeling is stepping out of the bath, grabbing your new towel, only to find it gliding across your skin. It's painful really, and thankfully that couldn't be further from the case with these towels from The White Company — these were soft and perfectly absorbent on the first go.

In fact, they were so soft that they might even rival Cozy Earth's Bath Towels (although I might have to try those for myself, too, at some point). And the hand towels and face towels were just the same.

One thing I would note is that I was more keen to wash the face towels as I wanted them to be a little more worn in before using them on my sensitive skin.

Post Wash

After a week, I decided to throw these towels for a spin in the wash and see how they held up — that's the ultimate test after all. Once again, my flat in London is a harsh judge for these kinds of reviews. It's damp, and we don't have an in-unit dryer (like many London homes), so it's air-dry only. If the towels can stay soft through these conditions, then they are likely worth investing in.

And I'm happy to report not only that they washed and dried well, but they even managed to feel cozier. The slightly slick, new-towel feeling broke down, and what was left was an even softer material. And they don't lose their thickness, which is really important. Nothing's worse than watching your once-plush towel wear down to the size and feeling of a napkin.

However, I can't attest to their longevity, as the towels are still semi-new to me, but so far, so good. And if the online reviews are any judge, then the future looks bright.

"As homeowners increasingly seek more space, natural light and a stronger connection to nature, conservatory-style shower rooms are becoming the ultimate expression of wellness-led design, offering a bathroom that becomes a calm, restorative retreat," Louise adds.

As bathrooms continue to take cues from boutique hotels and Mediterranean-inspired interiors, soft, curved openings are replacing conventional straight-edged enclosures.

"A big trend we are seeing emerging for showers is 'material drenching' - when the space is enveloped in a finish that continues from floor to wall to create that feeling of being cocooned," says Adam Knight. "It also has the power to enlarge spaces by eliminating obvious transitions, which can make even a small bathroom shower feel larger."

However, stark white isn’t (and shouldn’t be) the only option, say the experts. And there are plenty of bathroom color ideas that should be on your radar for a stylish space that you’ll still love in years to come.

The key is to pick your palette wisely, so you don’t end up with a trendy color you’ll hate in ten years.

"The bathroom colors that will still feel elegant and relevant in ten years’ time are those rooted in nature: soft stone, warm ivory, chalky taupe, sage, dusty blues and earthy clay tones," says Anna Hill, brand director and color consultant at Fenwick & Tilbrook. "While trends will inevitably come and go, bathrooms that layer soft, nature-inspired colors tend to age gracefully, creating spaces that feel just as sophisticated a decade from now as they do today."

But it’s important to choose the right sort of neutral, say the designers, if you want a bathroom with serious staying power.

"If you want a bathroom that still looks beautiful in ten years, keep it simple: beige and white. But it has to be the right beige and the right white," explains Lisa Hensby, founder and creative director of Lisa Hensby Design & Studio Build. "I always go for a soft, warm beige with undertones of brown in it, never a yellow one. And the white should be an off-white, never stark or bright. Softer, warmer tones sit quietly in the background and let the room breathe."

"Warm white is one of the most timeless choices for a bathroom because it creates a clean, bright foundation without feeling sterile," agrees Jackie Armour at JMA Interiors, who recommends White Dove from Benjamin Moore. For Simon Mayhew, founder and interior designer at TXTURED it is Bauwerk’s Hoar Frost limewash that he keeps returning to. "It’s not quite white and not quite gray," he says. "Limewash is a mineral finish, breathable and slightly porous, so it absorbs and reflects light unevenly across the surface. That’s what gives it depth rather than flatness."

And the real beauty of a neutral bathroom is that it gives you flexibility to change your accessories for a fresh new look in the future.

"You can update brassware, towels, mirrors, or lighting over time without needing to rethink the entire room," adds Waleed Shahid of Royal Bathrooms.

"Natural terracotta is one of the few bathroom colors I can genuinely see feeling as relevant in ten years’ time as it does today," says Damla Turgut, founder and creative director at Otto Tiles & Design. "Unlike trend-led shades, it isn’t really a color at all. It’s tied to a material that’s been used in homes for centuries, which gives it a sense of timelessness."

"And when you build a scheme around colors found in nature, it naturally stands the test of time," agrees Isabel Fernandez, director at Quorn Stone, meaning look to other naturals as colors that complement terracotta. It all comes down to the warmth that terracotta naturally brings to a bathroom, something we’re all craving in 2026.

"After years of cool grays and clinical white dominating interiors, homeowners are gravitating towards earthy, grounding tones that make a space feel lived-in and human," says Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms. "Terracotta does that instinctively – whether it appears as the material itself or a color reference."

It’s the perfect color for both contemporary and traditional bathrooms. But the key is to layer terracotta with natural stone, linen or raw timber for a considered and grounded look.

"Keep it too flat or too clean, and you lose the very quality that makes it so appealing," adds Louise.

Blue bathrooms have a strong track record for timelessness. They're calm, restful and rooted in nature.

"Blue has an obvious association with water, making it particularly well suited to bathrooms," says Paul Dwyer at Thomas Crapper. "It’s not tied to a specific trend cycle, which is why homeowners return to it time and time again."

But it is soft, mineral blues — and airy blues with a blackened or gray undertone – that create timeless bathroom schemes you’ll still love in 10 years’ time. So steer clear of blues that are too poppy, too pastel, or too bright.

"A soft, airy blue brings a refreshing energy to any bathroom," says Helen at Benjamin Moore. "It taps into basic psychology and mimics the soothing qualities of water and the sky, so it will never go out of style."

"And unlike bold blues that can feel trendy, a muted blue-gray acts almost as a neutral, adding just enough color to create interest without dominating the space," explains Jackie at JMA Interiors.

Dusty blue-gray pairs effortlessly with natural materials and brushed metal finishes or crisp white accents if you love the coastal-inspired look.

If you want a pale blue gray shade with staying power, Patrick O’Donnell, international brand ambassador at Farrow & Ball, recommends Calming Skylight. Or for a cosy country house vibe, try Oval Room Blue, a deeper, historic blue hue.

"The key is to avoid colors that feel overly saturated or trend-led," adds Anna at Fenwick & Tilbrook, "and instead choose nuanced complex tones that shift beautifully with the light throughout the day."

4. Sage Green

Using soft heritage tones like sage green won’t let you down in the bathroom, say designers.

"Green is a timeless bathroom color," says Charlotte Tilby, head of marketing at Calypso Bathrooms. "And its enduring appeal comes from its strong connection to nature, helping spaces feel calm and grounding."

Stick to green bathrooms that sit from pale to mid strength for a serene and refreshing retreat. So muted sage, olive tones, or a whispery green gray.

"Unlike stronger greens that come and go, a soft sage has proven remarkably enduring," says Kunal at Touched Interiors. "It introduces color while remaining subtle and restorative."

"If you want color with longevity, look to nature," adds Waleed at Royal Bathrooms. "Muted sage and olive tones feel timeless because they are restful and familiar. They bring personality to a bathroom without overwhelming the space."

5. Earthy Pink

Soft blush pink has been a popular pick for our homes recently. And according to the experts, pale pink is tipped as a timeless bathroom color you’ll love for years and years.

The trick is to use an earthy pink or a plaster-like hue that adds depth and subtle character to your space, instead of a bright pink bathroom.

"Beyond flattering to the complexion and exuding gentle warmth, earthy pinks like our classic Setting Plaster are a natural choice for the bathroom," says Patrick at Farrow & Ball.

"Neutrals will always be the most popular colors, but if you do wish to stray away from these, I believe pink, peach, and yellow will all be up there as they are warm, welcoming, and make us feel happy," says Lee Thornley, founder of Bert & May.

So what about plain white bathrooms? Should we be avoiding this at all costs? Well, yes and no, say the experts. Choosing an off-white or a soft cream is perhaps a better choice than stark white and will look sophisticated layered with woods, natural stones, and soft textures. Even a butter yellow bathroom can be a good alternative to a pure white design.

"An ecru shade, something akin to a warm canvas color is one of the most timeless choices for a bathroom," says Damla at Otto Tiles & Design. "It’s an incredibly versatile foundational color and works in almost any bathroom, regardless of its size, its style or the amount of natural light the space receives."

And there’ll always be a place for a classic black and white bathroom scheme — but the key is to use the contrast carefully. “A monochrome bathroom can look incredibly elegant, especially softened with texture, warmer lighting and simply, unfussy fixtures," adds Waleed at Royal Bathrooms.

As Mike Whitfield, interiors expert at Lusso, explains, "Butter Yellow is a mood-boosting color, combining the happiness of yellow with a muted pastel tone. This makes it ideal for bathrooms, as it contributes to the overall mood and wellness."

Reflecting our growing appreciation for earthy color palettes and shades that refer back to nature, there's an obvious appeal to this happy shade. "It makes a space inviting, as it’s associated with sunlight and fresh blooms, which aligns with the interior trend of connecting with nature and bringing the outdoors in," notes Mark. And in the summer months, when natural light will serve to intensify the warmth of the shade, this only rings truer.

There's a specificity to the charm of butter yellow, too — more subdued and creamy than a regular pastel yellow shade, it acts more like an intensified version of an off-white, cream colored bathroom, which can often feel slightly boring or uninspired. Interior designer Amy Stoddart chalks this charm up to the memories this shade evokes, taking us back to a childlike frame of mind.

"The key behind the popularity of these colors is that they’re comforting, nostalgic, and familiar, conjuring warmth, flavor, and texture in a way that flat color codes never could. Butter Yellow feels softer and more inviting than just pale yellow," notes Amy. And this comes down to the subtle depth of the shade.

That being said, butter yellow isn't exactly an easy win; the sunny shade can quickly turn saccharine when styled poorly, so to get it right, you'll need to give it some careful thought and planning.

The key lies in finding ways to counteract the natural tweeness of the shade. As Grazzie Wilson, from Ca'Pietra, aptly points out, "Butter yellow can go wrong very quickly if you let it become too cute, so I would always give it a bit of structure."

You'll need to find ways to bring some texture and movement into the design, and one effective way of doing this is through your bathroom tiling. "In a bathroom, tiles are a much better way to use it than paint because you get variation, shine, shadow, and all those tiny changes that stop the color from feeling flat," says Grazzie. A pale yellow zellige tile can bring just the right amount of warmth and brightness to your bathroom, even if it's only used as a trim or backsplash.

Having said that, a bathroom tile isn't always the best option for those with a tendency to change their mind. As much as you love butter yellow right now, there's always the chance you'll go off of it in the next few years, and opting for something as permanent as a tile could land you in a tricky predicament.

This is exactly why Sandra Baker, known as The Idle Hands on Instagram, says, "Using a butter yellow paint is the best way to incorporate it into a bathroom for commitment-phobes, as it's easily changed if you have a rethink in a few years." And with so many excellent choices out there, this is by far the most customizable approach. But, Sandra adds, "If you're in for the long haul, then I've seen some absolutely amazing vintage WCs and sinks in butter yellow, which would be so fun to use in a bathroom."

There is an inherent vintage feel to the color, making it a perfect choice for bathrooms with traditional features, and a butter yellow freestanding tub is an excellent focal point for a vintage-inspired design.

Perhaps the best way to play up this vintage effect is through your hardware, though. Both Sandra and Pernille recommend using antique brass sanitaryware and accessories, noting the metallic finishes' ability to add even more warmth and texture to your design.

Whether butter yellow is the highlight of your room or merely an accent color, the shades you choose to pair it with will play a huge role in the overall effect of your space.

Generally speaking, the experts recommend opting for a light, neutral color scheme; nothing that's too harsh a contrast, or that will compete against the yellow for attention. "Instead, keep the surrounding palette lighter and more harmonious," suggests Pernille, adding, "It works best when you keep the accent colors in lighter, neutral tones, allowing the butter yellow to remain gentle and balanced."

Think about the colors you'd naturally find it with for a calming palette. Or, for a vintage look, take inspiration from historical color pairings. "I highly recommend pairing it with creams, rich browns, dusty blues, or other period-appropriate pastels of the same saturation," says Pernille. "These tones complement the warmth of the yellow without fighting it for attention."

Search for muted, subdued shades that complement the gentle warmth of butter yellow and help keep it from feeling too kids' room-esque. "Limestone, putty, soft taupe, pale oak, and old brass all work because they make the yellow feel more grown-up," says Grazzie.

There is also scope to play around with some more vibrant shades, if that's more your style, but this approach will require more care. For example, Grazzie says, "If you want something a bit punchier, a muddy green or chocolate brown is a brilliant partner, but I would use it sparingly, perhaps on a vanity, mirror frame, or painted woodwork, rather than turning the whole bathroom into a color chart."

It's also best to specifically look for muted variations of these colors, with Pernille saying, "I would specifically avoid using vibrant blues or sharp greens, as they can easily clash with the soft, vintage nature of the yellow."

"'Can we have a Japanese bathroom in the UK?' is one of the most common questions I hear from Japanese people living here," says interior designer Yoko Kloeden. "And it tells you everything about how central the ofuro is to daily life."

As one of the most relaxing Japanese wellness rituals, ofuro literally translates to bathtub; however, its meaning goes far deeper than just a bathroom feature. It's a moment to unwind, centered around a traditional soaking tub that offers natural aromatherapy.

Rather than a function-driven space to cleanse, immersing yourself in an ofuro is designed to offer pure relaxation. And here's what makes it so special.

What Is Ofuro?

Moving to a home with an ensuite is the ultimate level-up. It may not seem like much, but the privacy of having a bathroom to call your own is a luxury that cannot be beaten, and once you have one, you'll never want to be without one again. It's a room that deserves care and attention in its design, and that all starts with the color you paint it.

Of course, the sanitaryware and materials you use in your ensuite bathroom will all play a part in building the vibe of the room, but nothing sets the tone quite like the color you put on the walls. It's the background and foundation for the rest of the design, and if you get it wrong, it will be hard to work your way back. The color you choose for your ensuite should be indicative of the atmosphere you'd like to create in there — it needs to be relaxing, a calming refuge to return to at the end of the day, where you can cleanse yourself of the stresses of the outside world, as well as an energizing beginning, setting the tone for the rest of your day each morning.

All in all, this small bathroom color choice can be surprisingly design-loaded, which is exactly why I asked the experts what colors they'd recommend avoiding at all costs — and their answers were not what I expected.

1. Shades of Gray

A much-contested shade, gray has a fierce army of supporters, and just as fierce a brigade of haters, too. And while there are admittedly several instances where decorating with gray can certainly be a beneficial design choice, when it comes to your ensuite bathroom, you may be best searching elsewhere.

This is not solely based on the 'millennial gray' connotations; rather, this comes from a space-based assessment. Unlike your living room or kitchen, ensuite bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side, with relatively little natural light. And while certain colors can make small bathrooms feel cozy and welcoming, others can emphasize their lack of spaciousness, making them feel cramped — unfortunately, gray falls into the latter camp.

As Reilly Renwich, CMO at State of the Wall, shares, there's data to back this feeling up. "We pulled our own sales data on ensuite wallpaper returns and color swaps at State of the Wall, and gray-adjacent tones made up 61.38% of all exchange requests in 2024. Designers come to us after their clients push back within the first year, and the fix always costs more than getting the color right the first time would have."

In bathrooms, the biggest challenge will always be trying to counteract the naturally cold, hard finish of your bathroom essentials, with white sanitaryware and reflective surfaces immediately bringing in a stark, harsh look. Instead of softening these features, a gray finish will emphasize them, making your bathroom feel even more sterile and clinical.

2. Intense, Saturated Hues

It's no secret that colors can affect your mood, and while this fact is important in how you design every room in your home, it becomes even more significant when designing a room where the purpose is to relax.

"Much like for the best colors for bedrooms, the colors you'll want to use in your ensuite are those that support and aid relaxation, bringing a calming, peaceful energy to your room. As design psychologist Sarah Seung McFarland explains, "Color occurs in context, so the 'wrong' color for an ensuite bedroom is one that competes with or disrupts the color scheme 'story' used in the bedroom. For instance, if you want a relaxing bedroom and bathroom suite, it's best to use cooler, less saturated colors for both rooms to support calm and rest."

And while any overly saturated hue can be an issue, the experts point to red as the primary problem-maker. Explaining the reasons behind this, interior designer Neha Gupta says, "The color red triggers the human body’s stress response. As a high-energy color with extremely strong visual impact, it raises heart rate, stimulates the brain, and erodes the calming, sheltering atmosphere that a bedroom with a private ensuite bathroom is meant to have."

As well as this, red can also work to emphasize any red undertones in your complexion, making your bathroom mirror appear unflattering, which is never how you want to start the day.

3. Bright, Flat Whites

White is often seen as the fail-safe, fallback option. When in doubt, choose white. However, in your ensuite, this classic backdrop may end up making your space look harsher and more uninviting than you may expect.

As Maria Ramirez, founder of BB Interiors, explains, "This is the sort of color that sounds wonderful in theory because everyone associates white with fresh and clean. In reality, a very blue-based white can make an ensuite feel clinical and cold."

This all comes down to the undertone of your paint shade. A true, bright white paint will most typically be made up of blue undertones, for that crisp, bright effect. And while this can work in certain circumstances, in an ensuite bathroom, it will often have the adverse effect. "In a room that is often compact, that kind of white can feel more 'private clinic' than sanctuary," agrees Maria.

This, coupled with all-white sanitaryware, can leave your bathroom feeling super flat, lacking any sort of dimension or depth.

Lofts aren't exactly the easiest to design, and this is all the more true when it comes to adding a loft bathroom into the mix. As West One Bathroom's head of design, Louise Ashdown, puts it, "Loft bathrooms come with a unique set of challenges — sloped ceilings, awkward angles, and limited floor area all need to be accounted for." They are inherently awkward spaces, with unique architectural elements for you to have to work around.

But with the right tricks up your sleeve, making the most of your loft conversion becomes a whole lot simpler. Our experts have had plenty of time to play around with different layouts and logistics, leaving them well-equipped to guide us all towards success — so, here are all their top tips for making the most of your loft conversion en-suite.

1. Follow the Space, Don't Fight It

First and foremost, the most crucial thing to understand when designing an ensuite in a loft is that the process will be fundamentally different from designing an ensuite in any other part of your home. The physical constraints of this type of space will completely change how it should be designed, and accepting this is the first step to designing a beautiful loft ensuite.

Laying this out simply, Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca' Pietra, says, "The big thing with a loft bathroom is that you have to be honest about the shape of the room from the start. You cannot plan it as though it is a standard box, because the ceiling height, the pitch of the roof, and the position of the rooflight will all have a say in where everything goes."

If you soldier ahead and try to plan it as you would any other bathroom, you'll be left with a cramped, awkward-looking space. However, if you take note of the limitations and physical attributes of your room, you can actually plan for a design that makes the most of what you've got.

To begin this process, Grazzie says, "I would always start by looking at where you can stand comfortably, where the natural light falls, and which walls can actually take the pieces you need, such as the vanity, shower, and storage." From here, you can begin to map out where each element will make the most sense.

The main thing that will dictate your bathroom layout will be the architecture and build of your roof. As Sophie Chapman, from The Vawdrey House, explains, "One of the key considerations is how the layout responds to the roofline. Positioning lower-profile elements such as baths, built-in storage, or WCs beneath eaves can help maximize the full-height areas for showers and circulation space."

To make this process as simple as possible, take your loft's architecture as a starting point for your design, and plan around it. This is the approach favored by designers, including Sophie, who says, "When designing an ensuite within a loft conversion, the starting point should always be the architecture of the space itself. Loft rooms often come with sloping ceilings, reduced head heights, and more compact footprints, so careful spatial planning is essential to ensure the bathroom feels comfortable, yet functional."

2. Sneaky Storage Solutions

Finding ways to include as many small bathroom storage ideas as possible is central to any ensuite design, but when you're working with a loft conversion, this challenge is taken to a new level. Generally speaking, a loft bathroom will be smaller than the average bathroom, but the amount of storage you'll need will remain the same. The solution, therefore, is to find clever ways to sneak in storage without it taking over the floor plan.

To do this, you'll want to start by identifying the dead space in the room and how you can turn these spots into clever storage ideas. "Space-saving in a loft ensuite is really about finding the parts of the room that are not doing enough and making them work harder," explains bathroom design manager at BK Eleven, Adam Wollerton, "Bathrooms often have little pockets of space that do not seem useful at first, particularly in loft rooms or areas where the ceiling height changes, but they can be brilliant places for hidden storage."

This can be done by integrating bespoke joinery, designed to transform these awkward spaces into extra loft storage. This could look like some custom shelves beneath a sloped roof, or a hidden cupboard in an otherwise useless corner. The point is to find ways to add functionality to the space without crowding the room and taking up any more space.

The more storage you can include in your bathroom, the less cluttered your space will be in the long run. "Storage should be integrated from the beginning. Bespoke joinery can make use of awkward angles and otherwise redundant spaces beneath sloping ceilings, helping the room feel less cluttered," says Sophie.

3. Avoid Freestanding Fixtures

One of the overarching themes of designing a small bathroom is finding ways to maximize your floor space — and your bathroom fixtures will play a major role in this.

Finding fixtures that take up as little space as possible should be your leading goal throughout this design process, and yes, that does mean saying goodbye to your dream of a freestanding tub. In loft bathrooms, built-in and wall-mounted designs will always come out on top, as BC Designs' Keeley Sutcliffe explains, "Wall-mounted fittings are also worth using wherever possible." Finding wall-mounted sanitaryware is a simple way to instantly make your bathroom feel more open and airy, helping to negate the issue of a cramped, claustrophobic design.

"Built-in details help too," adds Adam, saying, "A shower niche or a ledge behind the basin gives you somewhere for the things you use every day, without adding anything that projects too far into the room. It is a simple idea, but it makes a big difference, because the storage does not announce itself. You are making better use of space that might otherwise be overlooked, while keeping the bathroom calm, ordered, and easy to live with.”

4. Use Tiling as a Tool

The success of your loft ensuite is not solely about the layout, though. As Grazzie notes, "Tiles can make a much bigger difference to a loft bathroom than people often realize, because when you have a sloping ceiling or a slightly awkward footprint, the surfaces are doing a lot of the work in how spacious the room feels."

The right type of bathroom tiles can completely transform the overall feel of your space, introducing the illusion of a lighter, brighter design, while the wrong tiles can have the adverse effect.

Because you're working within a limited amount of space, you'll want to avoid anything that could overwhelm the room. For example, Grazzie says, "Too many changes in tile, grout line, or finish can quickly make the space feel busy, whereas a calmer tile layout helps the eye travel more easily through the room."

In this context, large-format tiles may be a better idea than super petite, mosaic-style tiling. With fewer grout lines, these tiles can help visually open the space.

But it's not just the tile shape that will make a difference, as Grazzie says, "Texture matters here, too." As she explains, "When space is limited, the finishes have to work harder, so choosing a tile with gentle relief or a handmade feel can bring character to the room without needing additional furniture or decoration."

For a small bathroom color scheme, Grazzie suggests a more muted palette. "I would also keep the palette fairly restrained in a loft bathroom; lighter tiles will help the space feel fresher and more open, but introducing a warmer tone, as this scheme does in the shower, stops the room from feeling too stark. It is really about letting the tiles add atmosphere and definition, without overcrowding the room."

5. Go Frameless

Creating the illusion of more space in a small bathroom comes down to having as few visual interruptions as possible. Anything too bulky or heavy will instantly overwhelm your space, making it feel cramped and awkward.

One way to avoid this issue is by opting for frameless glass designs. As Louise explains, "Clear glass shower enclosures, particularly fixed frameless panels that run to ceiling height, create the illusion of uninterrupted space and let light move freely through the room. Unlike hinged doors, they don't require clearance to open, which is a real advantage in a tight loft layout."

In loft bathrooms, glass is your best friend. It opens up the space, instead of boxing it in, and helps maintain as much light and brightness as possible.

Keeley also favors this technique, saying, "A fixed glass screen is another clever choice in a loft bathroom, as it creates enough division to contain the shower area without making the room feel boxed in. Unlike a full enclosure, it allows light from the window to move through the space, which is particularly important in loft conversions where natural light may come from one main source."

I have a friend who always lights a candle in the bathroom when guests come over. It's a charming little detail, yes, but they're far more confident that their house isn't going to burn down than I am. My advice: don't leave your candles unattended for longer than a few moments, seriously.

Instead, I have a bit of a ritual, specifically around making sure my bathroom smells good (all the time, yes, but it gets kicked into overdrive when we're hosting). That includes home fragrances and natural, but beautiful-smelling cleaning products, but there are some smells that you're only masking by filling your bathroom with nicely-fragranced things, and without tackling the problem, you won't have a truly fabulous-smelling bathroom.

Things like damp towels are easy enough to rectify, but where walls are damp, or the drains are kicking up an unusual smell, I have one addition I make to my bathroom scenting ritual that's specifically for deodorizing the bathroom, so you can layer fragrance on top. I hide it in my bathroom before people come over, and it does the job brilliantly. And this one thing is a food waste leftover from the kitchen. Here's how it works.

How to Make a Deodorizer From Coffee Grounds

That kitchen waste? Coffee grounds. Let's just start by saying, if you're just throwing your coffee grounds in the bin (never down the sink!), then you're wasting them anyway. You can use coffee grounds in the garden, or for your potted plants, too. They're a bit of a wonder.

However, coffee grounds also work as a natural deodorizer. "There are quite a few quick and easy hacks people can use to keep their bathrooms and home smelling fresh and free from odors on a day-to-day basis," says bathroom expert Andy Ellis from Posh. "Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, which is great at neutralizing odours in the air, for example."

However, it's not quite as easy as just emptying your espresso maker straight into your bathroom for this trick to work. Wet coffee grounds can go mouldy quickly, so you'll need to dry them out first.

• Empty your coffee grounds out onto a baking tray lined with parchment or baking paper.
• Spread into one thin layer.
• Put the tray into an oven preheated to 100°C for 30 minutes
• Check your grounds. They should be dry to the touch.

Decant your grounds into a small lidless pot, and hide it somewhere in your bathroom. I usually place mine on the floor under the vanity unit, where no one will be able to see it.

What to Use Alongside Coffee Grounds

Okay, so now you've got a neutral-smelling space, but now we want it to be smelling actively good. Here are some of my bathroom scenting favorites.

And it's not the only space you can use coffee grounds as a deodorizer, either. I often keep coffee grounds in my fridge as a way to make my kitchen smell good, especially when there are leftovers in there that can make it smell less than ideal.

In the most thoughtfully designed spaces, bathroom storage ideas are now being woven almost invisibly into the architecture itself, concealed behind wall paneling, hidden within bath surrounds, or seamlessly integrated into built-in seating.

The result is a bathroom that feels calmer, more luxurious, and blissfully free of visual clutter. These designer-approved ideas show that the smartest storage solutions are often the ones you barely notice at all, or are ones that double up as chic design features. Because nobody ever complained about having too much storage...

1. Recessed Cupboards Hidden Behind the Vanity Mirror

A recessed storage cupboard sitting stealthily in a stud wall behind the bathroom mirror creates functionality without the bulk.

"In this bathroom, the arched mirror above the sink is actually a mirrored cabinet, boxed out so the storage sits neatly within the wall rather than projecting into the room," explains Ruth Milne, of Studio Milne.

"From the outside, all you really notice is the soft curve of the mirror, which keeps the space feeling calm and visually uncluttered," the designer says. "I often approach bathroom storage this way, designing it so it feels quietly integrated as part of the overall design. I tend to layer different types of storage depending on the space, such as recessed cabinets, tiled niches, vanities with internal dividers, ledges and shelving, alongside bespoke joinery where possible."

"In small bathrooms especially, integrated storage can make a huge difference, as it allows you to keep everyday items close to hand without introducing bulky cabinetry or visual noise," she adds. "Thoughtful storage is so important in bathrooms because when everything has a place and clutter is tucked away, the room naturally feels more serene and restful. A relaxing escape at the end of a long day."

2. Hollow Architectural Features That Double as Storage

Utilize all the space in your bathroom and make pretty architectural features work as functional areas, too. 'Hollow' spaces in your room's architecture can be transformed into shelving that can display objects, while hiding more practical items like towel storage.

"Creating stylish but liveable spaces is important in our design work, and this bathroom storage reflects that ethos," says Kate Cooper, of Kate Cooper Interiors, who designed the space above.

"The open shelving allows you to display beautiful objects, towels or easy-to-reach items mixed with closed storage to hide away the practical things needed in a bathroom."

The space in the renovation came from an adjacent bedroom that didn't need a full wall of robe storage, so it was utilized in the main bathroom. "It also eliminates the need for the traditional hallway linen closet, as you can store additional towels inside the bathroom," Kate adds.

JoJo Barr, of House Nine Designs, also utilizes this type of architectural shelving, adding: "A ladder shelf is great for smaller bathrooms - hang towels, a small basket for washcloths, and a hook for a robe. It adds warmth and texture without eating floor space."

3. Clever Flush Above-Loo Cabinets

If you get clever with your bathroom layout ideas, you can create opportunities to add integrated or hidden storage in places you wouldn't necessarily expect.

Victoria Kember, of KERV Interiors, utilized space from the adjoining bedroom to the bathroom above to create a cabinet that sits flush against the wall.

She explains, "By reconfiguring the layout and using space from the bedroom behind, we were able to create a large walk-in shower that brings a sense of luxury. The newly formed wall also allowed for discreet hidden storage, complete with a shaver socket to keep toothbrushes neatly tucked away as well as ample storage for lotions and potions."

"The touch-to-close cabinetry creates a seamless aesthetic, while the timber front ties in the vanity unit perfectly," Victoria adds.

4. Under-Vanity Toe-Kick Drawers

The dead space beneath floating or built-in vanity units is often wasted, but slimline toe-kick drawers can be integrated into the plinth for discreet storage of flat items like spare toiletries, hair tools, or cleaning cloths.

Because the drawers are almost invisible from standing height, they maintain that streamlined luxury look while quietly adding extra functionality.

5. Seamless Wall Storage Hidden by Color Drenching

Want your extra storage to be completely hidden for a totally seamless, airy finish? Use paint and color drenching to hide a recessed wall cupboard.

"If you want a calm bathroom, start with the storage," says Ruth Milne. "In this Leyton project, a bespoke concealed cupboard was built by the contractors with handleless push-to-open doors, allowing everyday essentials to be tucked neatly out of sight and reducing visual clutter."

"Painted in Ball Green by Farrow & Ball, like the rest of the space, the soft, earthy tone adds warmth and depth while helping the room feel restful and cohesive."

6. Wall Paneling Makes the Perfect Hidden Storage Space

Whether it's wood cladding or wall paneling, these textured finishes are the ideal spot to hide recessed cupboards that seamlessly integrate into the design.

“Storage is always one of the biggest challenges in a bathroom, but the best solutions are often the ones you barely notice," says Keeley Sutcliffe, Design Manager at BC Designs. "Paneling behind a bath, as seen in the bathroom above, is a really smart place to hide storage because it uses space that might otherwise just be decorative, while keeping the area around the bath calm and uncluttered."

It works particularly well for the things you want close by, but don't necessarily want on show, such as spare toiletries, candles, bath oils, or folded towels.

"Rather than having bottles lined up around the edge of the bath, you can build slim cupboards or recessed shelving into the panelling, with push-touch doors so everything sits flush and feels part of the room," continues Keeley. “The important thing is to make sure it is genuinely useful. It needs to be easy to open, at a comfortable height, and designed with the bathroom environment in mind, so moisture-resistant materials, good ventilation, and a suitable finish are all key."

Done well, it gives you that lovely sense of order without making the room feel over-designed or packed with cabinetry.

Ultimately, the most successful small bathroom storage ideas are the ones that support the space without visually dominating it.

By integrating storage into architectural details - whether through recessed shelving, concealed cabinetry, or multifunctional built-ins - it’s possible to create a bathroom that feels both highly practical and effortlessly serene.

The cold, ultra-clinical bathroom aesthetic is fading, say the experts. And instead of bright, white walls and basic white bathroom tiles, ensuites are embracing a warm minimalism and a relaxed, lived-in mood. Think muted greens, soft browns, and terracotta tones for a calm and atmospheric luxury.

"We’re seeing warmer palettes take over, with rich stones, brushed bronze, smoked oak, textured plaster finishes, and softer architectural lines," says Kunal at Touched Interiors. "Minimalism still matters, but now it feels more inviting and liveable rather than severe."

This bathroom color trend leans into earthy, textured neutrals, and clay hues, but also a moody palette of oxblood, olive, cocoa, charcoal, and deep plum for something a little more dramatic.

"People still want bathrooms to feel timeless, but they also want personality and warmth," agrees Damla of Otto Tiles & Design. "Cooler grays and stark monochrome bathrooms are starting to feel less relevant as interiors generally move towards warmer, more expressive palettes."

2. Unexpected Texture

Texture is a key trend for 2026 as ensuite bathrooms evolve into full-blown sensory spaces — a far cry from a functional add-on to your bedroom.

"Fluted vanity fronts, ribbed glass shower screens, reeded stone details, and softly textured wall finishes all add depth without overwhelming the scheme," says Kunal at Touched Interiors.

The experts are replacing colder, high gloss and full marble bathroom schemes with a palette of tactile surfaces and tiles that celebrate variation and imperfection.

"It’s all part of a move away from stark minimalism in favour of interiors that feel comforting, cocooning and emotionally warm," explains interior designer Rebecca Hughes.

Seek out handmade ceramics, zellige tiles, textured cements, and patinated brassware finishes for softness and depth.

"And pair with natural materials like timber, travertine, and brushed metals," adds Damla at Otto Tiles & Design.

3. Continuing the Design Story

It's no longer good enough to simply pick a plain ensuite scheme and expect it to have the wow factor. Because ensuites are now personal spaces that should transition seamlessly from bedroom to bathroom. So, your bathroom décor should echo bedroom colors, prints, and materials for the ultimate comfort and restoration zone.

"One of the biggest trends we are seeing is a move towards ensuites that feel much more connected to the bedroom, rather than sitting beside it as a purely practical bathroom," says Adam Woollerton, bathroom design manager at BK11. "Clients are choosing warmer finishes, timber vanities, brushed brassware, textured tiles, fluted glass, and softer warm colors so the room feels like part of the suite as a whole. The connection is especially important when the ensuite is visible from the bed, as the first view into the room needs to feel inviting."

That’s why it’s crucial to think about sightlines and what you see from the bedroom, as the first glimpse sets the tone for the space.

"A beautiful vanity or a statement basin can all work really well as the first thing you see, whereas the toilet or everyday storage is usually better placed more discreetly," adds Adam.

To enhance the seamless design, choose console basins and washstands that look more like pieces of furniture than functional sanitaryware.

"These work particularly well in ensuites because they help blur the line between bathroom and bedroom aesthetics," adds Paul Dwyer, managing director at Thomas Crapper & Co.

4. Walk-in Designs

Bath tubs are great for a relaxing plunge, but with ensuites generally on the small side, walk-in showers are the answer.

"Clients increasingly prefer seamless, wet room inspired layouts with frameless glazing, flush floor transitions, and generous walk-in showers," says Kunal at Touched Interiors. "They feel cleaner visually and create a much more architectural aesthetic."

It’s a design shift that Jo Sagster senior designer at Ripples London is witnessing too: "Baths are now being removed in favor of spacious walk-in showers in the vast majority of projects. Clients are prioritising practicality and everyday luxury, with tiled shower benches becoming one of the most requested features thanks to their sleek appearance and spa-like feel."

In smaller ensuites, another tip is to position the shower by the window to help maximise natural light and create a more generous walk-in zone.

But if you do have space for a shower and bath, it’s crucial to think carefully where the bath sits.

"Placing it so it’s the first thing you see when the door is open, or where it can be glimpsed from the bedroom, helps the whole suite feel connected and gives the bath a presence," adds Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs.

5. Tile Drenching

Ensuites are the perfect place to get playful with bathroom tiles say the experts because they’re not rooms the whole house is using all day, every day. They are often smaller than the main bathroom too, so you may not need huge quantities if you've got your eye on something pricey.

"The nicest ensuites tend to have one tile moment that makes you smile, rather than lots of competing ideas," says Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra. "That might be a checkerboard floor, a tiled shower that feels almost jewel-like or a wall tile with a little wobble and glaze variation."

Tile drenching is one of the best ways to create something extra special in an ensuite, the experts agree.

"It’s where the same tile, or closely related tones and textures, are used across floors, walls and sometimes even into the shower areas to create a much more immersive feel," explains Damla at Otto Tiles & Design. "It makes an ensuite feel considered and architectural, but also visually calmer because the eye isn’t constantly interrupted by lots of contrasting finishes."

6. Decorative Lighting

Bold, sculptural bathroom lighting is taking over the ensuite transforming this once functional spot into a luxe and glamorous space.

"Whether oversized pendants, elegant wall sconces, or decorative ceiling fixtures, statement lighting becomes a design feature in its own right while enhancing ambience and highlighting key areas," says Caroline Milns, head of interior design at Zulufish.

The designers urge us to use statement lights as part of a layered lighting scheme to elevate the everyday routine into a more indulgent experience.

"Thoughtful lighting makes a real difference and relying on one source isn’t enough," says Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of K’Arte Design. "I’d always recommend layering it, with wall lights at face level near the vanity alongside dimmable ceiling lighting. It allows you to switch between a bright, functional space and a more atmospheric, restful one."

"Homeowners are moving away from harsh illuminated features and instead focusing on softer, layered lighting schemes," adds Jo at Ripples. "Under-vanity lighting, concealed wall washers, decorative wall lights and pendants are all being used to create a warmer and more atmospheric feel, while sensor lighting is becoming increasingly popular for nighttime."

7. Oversized Mirrors

Oversized bathroom mirrors are a growing trend for ensuites, helping to amplify light and space

"Acting almost like an additional window, they visually expand the room and enhance the sense of openness, especially in more compact ensuites," says Caroline at Zulufish.

A good idea is to hang mirrors in front of windows to enhance natural light and brighten the face when getting ready.

"This clever placement amplifies daylight while maintaining privacy, giving the effect of an extra window and a lighter, more open feel in the ensuite," adds Caroline.

A beautiful bedroom is nice and all, but a beautiful bedroom WITH an ensuite bathroom? Now that's something to write home about. It's the ultimate home flex, a bathroom to call your own, with no one else's slippery products and damp towels lying around — so give it the attention it deserves, and avoid these common mistakes.

Your own ensuite bathroom should be a sacred space — the first room you enter in the morning, and the last one you'll leave at night. This is the space that sets the tone for your day, an inherently personal, private space, so it's all the more important that you get it right. And while it may seem so simple, the experts see the same mistakes crop up over and over again.

Which is why I've taken the time to lay them all out, diving into the five issues our experts just can't seem to get away from, so we know exactly what we have to avoid.

1. Picking the Wrong Tiles

Your bathroom tiling has the power to set the tone for your entire design — you can make a statement, and go for a full tile drenching moment, or choose something more timeless and subtle, like an understated natural stone finish. There's so much room to play around and explore with tiling. However, the flip side of this is that there's plenty of space to get it wrong, too.

More often than not, this comes about as a result of a purely aesthetic-based decision-making process. It's something we're all guilty of: you see something on Instagram, instantly fall in love, and commit to it, no matter the complications. And more often than not, the complications will be plentiful, especially when it comes to ensuite bathrooms. Much like how there are colors designers would never pick for an ensuite bathroom, there are tiles they think are best avoided, too.

This is something Ca' Pietra's head of creative, Grazzie Wilson, has seen too many times to count: "One of the biggest mistakes with ensuite bathrooms is choosing tiles because they look beautiful on a sample board, without thinking enough about how they will work in a smaller room that has to cope with a lot of heavy use and often very little natural light."

In most cases, an ensuite bathroom will be one of the smallest rooms in the home, and it should be designed with its footprint in mind. The design choices that could look beautiful in a sprawling room simply won't work in the context of a small bathroom. As Grazzie explains, "In an ensuite, the wrong tile choice can make the room feel busier than it needs to, especially if there are too many grout lines, too much contrast, or a finish that marks easily in a space used every day."

Much of this will come down to the size of your tile. Opt for a small format, and your space runs the risk of becoming overwhelmed with grout lines. However, Isabel Fernandez from Quorn Stone points out that, although large-format tiles can be beautiful, "in a compact ensuite they need to be chosen carefully," suggesting "stones with gentle movement or soft veining which help the space feel open rather than boxed in."

As well as the size of your tiles, Maria D Arraez from Tile of Spain adds that "A common mistake in ensuite bathrooms is choosing tiles that aren’t suitable for the environment. Highly porous materials or overly textured surfaces can become difficult to maintain in a high-moisture setting."

Before choosing your tile, you'll want to make sure the material is appropriate for the setting — the wrong material won't just look bad; it will actually affect the safety of your bathroom, too.

2. Squeezing It All In

"The mistake I see most often in ensuites is trying to fit in everything, rather than asking what the room can genuinely take without it feeling cramped and too busy," claims Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs. And if you've ever had to design a small space, this is something you're likely already all too familiar with.

There is always a certain level of restraint needed when working with a limited amount of space, and this is all the more prevalent when it comes to ensuite bathrooms. You'll have to work against your 'more is more' instincts, tapping instead into a more minimalist design approach, stripping back to basics, and avoiding any unnecessary flourishes.

However, this can often be easier said than done. "Because an ensuite is attached to a bedroom, people often want it to feel like a private retreat, but that can lead to baths being squeezed into spaces where there is not enough room to move around them, showers being made too narrow, or sanitaryware sitting too close together," says Keeley.

The fundamental issue with this is that you are not accepting your space for what it is and are instead trying to manipulate it into what you want it to be. And, as a result, you'll leave yourself with a space that's unnecessarily hard to use.

This may mean sacrificing something you had set your heart on, but, in the long run, it will leave you with a better ensuite. As Keeley so aptly puts it, "A well-planned ensuite does not have to do everything a main bathroom does, but it does need to do the essentials beautifully and comfortably."

3. Underestimating Ventilation

Your modern bathroom could be designed to absolute perfection, but without the proper ventilation, you'll be running to get out of there.

Of course, bathroom ventilation is essential at the best of times, but when it comes to designing an ensuite, it's even more important. As Richard Eaton from Tissino explains, "An ensuite sits close to the bedroom, so moisture, steam, and damp towels become more noticeable than they might in a family bathroom, and if extraction is weak or a towel rail has been placed wherever there happened to be a spare bit of wall, the room can quickly feel less fresh than it should."

But this isn't just about how your bathroom feels; proper ventilation is also necessary to ensure it functions at its best, too. "It is also about helping the space dry properly, protecting finishes, keeping towels usable, and stopping moisture from lingering around cabinetry, mirrors, and painted surfaces," says Richard.

And this isn't something you can leave to the last minute, either; your ventilation should be one of the first elements you consider when planning your design, or else you'll constantly be searching for ways to remove moisture from your bathroom.

4. Lackluster Lighting Choices

If there's one lesson that can transform any room you design, it's understanding the importance of lighting. And carefully planning bathroom lighting can take any room from meh to amazing — and your ensuite is no different.

Because bathrooms are fundamentally practical spaces, it's all too common for people to rely solely on practical, task lighting. But to do this is to do your room a major disservice. As Isabel says, "Even the most beautiful tiles can look flat under poor lighting."

The right lighting can completely shift the energy and atmosphere of a room, bringing a softness and warmth that comforts instead of startles. The main culprit behind this trend of bad bathroom lighting is the prevalence of bright, overhead lights.

Francesca Harris, from Francesca Harris Design, notes, "A lot of ensuites rely purely on spotlights, which can make the space feel quite cold and clinical. I always think bathrooms should feel softer and more atmospheric. The last thing you want just before going to bed is a bright spotlight in your face!"

By now, many of us are well-aware of the instant vibe-killer that is the big light, opting instead for softer, overhead lighting alternatives, and this should be no different in your en-suite.

5. Putting Form Over Function

Last, but certainly not least, the age-old problem of form-over-function, we all know it's wrong, and yet time and time again, we fall victim to the trap. And while there are always risks with this approach, in your esuite, it can be the beginning of the end.

"One of the biggest mistakes we see in ensuite bathrooms is prioritizing aesthetics over practicality," shares Culliford's director, Oli Webb. He continues, explaining, "Homeowners often choose beautiful materials or layouts without fully considering ventilation, water exposure, storage, or long-term maintenance."

This can be particularly problematic in ensuites, where space is already at a minimum. Without the luxury of space, you have to ensure each and every element is working as hard as possible.

This problem can bleed into every element of your design, too, with Jeevan Seth, CEO of JTP, mentioning, "Features like oversized fittings, insufficient storage, or poorly positioned shower controls can quickly impact usability in a smaller bathroom."

Practical doesn't need to mean boring, though; it's perfectly possible to design a bathroom that is hyper-functional, without scrimping on style — it just requires a little effort, and some stylish small bathroom storage ideas.

The one space that no home should ever go without perfuming is the bathroom. That's no secret, yet somehow, salle de bains end up being underscented or overwhelmingly perfumed. But there's a, dare I say, intricate formula for making this room smell clean and calming.

Improving ventilation, deep cleaning, layering your scentscape, and decorating with foliage are some classic ways to make a home smell nice in general. But then you can also take a more specific approach by refreshing your bath linen, prioritizing reed diffusers, and hiding odor absorbers.

Now, it's all about when and how you use these tricks to your advantage. So, instead of (wastefully) spritzing your expensive perfume seconds before guests arrive, here's how to make your bathroom smell like a spa all the time.

1. Improve Ventilation

In order to lay a stable foundation for the rest of your scenting tricks to work efficiently, ventilation is key. Since bathrooms can get warm, steamy, and humid, it's important to enforce an exit strategy for stagnant air and heat.

Since bathroom trends are veering towards alcove-like settings, this gives us a chance to reposition shower spaces. Preferably by a windowed nook with treatments to roll down when the room is in use.

It might be a task you loathe, but regularly deep cleaning your bathroom is another foundational tip to make your bathroom smell nice. And if there's one room you can unabashedly use citric detergents in, it's the bathroom.

So, my advice is to brush up on your bathroom cleaning hacks and dust off your beautiful cleaning tools to make the task a little easier on the eyes. And don't just scrub the surface. Clean bathroom fixtures, tackle tricky grout, and get to all the out-of-reach spaces that are collecting dust.

3. Introduce Scented Diffusers

Anytime I adopt a reed diffuser into my scentscape, you can almost always bet it'll end up on my bathroom shelf. August Campbell, founder of AUGUST&PIERS, confirms that diffusers are a clever way to consistently make your bathroom smell nice.

"For bathrooms, I would opt for clean, fresh, and even fruity scents that help the space feel uplifted and refreshed," he says. "The go-to in our home is the SAINT Ceramic Diffuser or interior scent, for notes of orange, wild fig, and cassis."

4. Wash and Refresh Your Bath Linens

Be it the towel hanging on the wall, the bathrobe tucked behind your door, or the fluffy bath mats sitting pretty on the floor — the fabrics in your bathroom need regular cleaning, too.

Additionally, I have recently noticed that the soaps housed in your bathroom can also impact the scent of the space in a real way. Yes, bath products — but also, the humble hand wash. So choose wisely!

So, consider this your go-to guide to all things bathroom measurements. I asked the experts to share all the essentials that they follow for every design, so you won't have to do any guesswork.

1. Freestanding Bath Planning

Nothing screams luxury quite like a freestanding tub. This traditional bathroom feature is at the top of many a bathroom wishlist, and for good reason, too. But, to make it work, you'll have to make sure you have the space for it.

"Getting the proportions right around a bath is about allowing the piece to sit comfortably within the room. A freestanding bath, in particular, benefits from space around it so that it does not feel restricted in use, but also so that it can be approached and cleaned with ease," says Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs.

As a basic outline, Keeley recommends allowing a minimum of 100-150mm clearance on either side of the tub for easy access and to prevent the bath from appearing cramped in your space. This is the kind of design that will always benefit from more space, though, so if you can afford to leave a larger clearance, you should.

Beyond the physical placement of your tub, it's also worth considering the practicalities of getting your bath into your bathroom in the first place. As Keeley notes, "Freestanding designs, particularly those in solid materials, can be substantial in both size and weight, and access is often overlooked at the planning stage." Save yourself from future dilemmas by carefully measuring your stairwells and doorways, ensuring there is an easy route for your bath to enter through.

2. Built-In Tubs

Or, if you prefer a more striking, modern look, you may find yourself drawn to a built-in tub design.

For this, Keeley notes, "The footprint is more contained, though you still need to ensure there is adequate space in front, ideally around 700mm, so that the bath remains easy to access."

This could be a better option for compact rooms, as they require less space overall and only need to be accessible from one side.

3. Standard Shower Footprint

"When planning a shower, the starting point is always the footprint, but it is the surrounding clearances and internal positioning that define how comfortable it feels in use," says Richard Eaton, design manager at Tissino.

As a general rule, Richard recommends a 900 x 900 mm footprint; however, in tighter spaces, a minimum of 800 x 800 mm can suffice.

This is not the only shower measurement to bear in mind, though. Jeevan Seth, CEO at JTP, adds, "Allow a minimum clearance of around 700-800 mm in front of the enclosure or entry point to ensure safe and practical access."

4. Walk-In Shower Dimensions

A spa bathroom essential, the walk-in shower is a definite step up from the traditional enclosure-style designs. But, as you might expect, it's best reserved for those with space to spare.

"Walk-in showers benefit from larger dimensions — ideally starting from 1200 mm x 800 mm — to provide a more open, comfortable experience and better water containment without the need for full enclosure," says Jeevan.

Not only will this larger footprint create a more comfortable, open feel, but, as Richard explains, "Extending the length to at least 1200 mm helps contain water effectively." Without this extra length, you may be at risk of your whole bathroom turning into a wet room every time you step out of the shower.

5. Shower Controls Placement

Of course, though, a shower is so much more than just a comfortable footprint. What's going on inside it is just as important to the overall success of your design, if not more. You'll want to consider how each element of the shower sits in the space, and how easy it is for you to use.

Ensuring your shower controls are simple and seamless for you to use is one of the most important parts of this design process. For optimal ease of access, Richard recommends placing your controls around 1000-1200 mm from the floor.

It can also be helpful to take a more personalized approach when designing your shower, tweaking the design to suit you. For example, the optimal positioning for your shower head may change depending on your height, though, as a rule, Richard recommends somewhere between 2000-2100 mm above floor level.

For a smooth, easy entrance point, Richard recommends, "Allowing at least 700 mm of clear space in front of the shower," adding, "Careful placement of screens and openings avoids awkward entry points or water escaping into the wider room."

6. Toilet Clearance

It may not be the most glamorous part of your design, but your toilet still deserves as much thought and consideration as every other element of your bathroom.

Without proper clearance, your toilet can feel awkward or uncomfortable to use, and can actually make your whole room feel off-balance.

To prevent this, Adam Wollderton, bathroom design manager at BK Eleven, says, “With toilets, allowing around 800 mm in width and at least 600 mm in front makes a noticeable difference to how easy the room feels to use, particularly in more compact layouts."

7. Basin Clearance

"Basins follow a similar logic [as toilets]," says Adam. "A minimum of 600 mm works, but increasing that to 700 mm or more gives a much greater sense of ease, especially when paired with storage."

The amount of space and clearance you choose to leave around your basin will be reflective of how you plan to use the space. If your bathroom basin doubles up as your getting-ready station, you may benefit from a slightly larger design, with some extra bathroom storage integrated within.

In family homes and primary en-suites, you may opt for a his-and-hers style basin, which will change the necessary dimensions. "If you are introducing a double basin, starting at 1200 mm is essential, though pushing closer to 1400 mm or beyond allows each user enough space without encroaching on the other.”

If you are designing a space that you expect to be used by the whole family, Jeevan also adds, "Where possible, allowing 200-300 mm clearance on either side helps improve usability, particularly in shared or family bathrooms."

8. Wall-Hung Fixtures Height

There are multiple benefits to opting for a wall-hung bathroom fixture. Not only do they take up less space, making them a great option for small bathrooms, but they also make cleaning your bathroom far easier, allowing you to access those typically hard-to-reach spots.

But these designs require just as much thought as any other. As a rule, Adam suggests keeping your wall-hung basin at around 850 mm, and toilets somewhere between 400-430 mm.

However, much like many other height-related measurements, this should be reflective of what feels most comfortable to you, and what might work for one person could be very different from what feels right to another.

The treat to finally laundering your towels is two-fold. For one, you have a fresh towel waiting to wrap itself around you, and secondly, there's something so satisfying about restocking your closet of bath linens with perfectly stacked towels. But the latter isn't always easy to do.

Typically, it takes me a couple of tries to properly line up my towels. And as someone who will try and try again before I give up on a perfect stack, I wish I knew that striped towels were the answer to my linen closet organization woes.

"After years and years of folding towels, I have come to the conclusion that there is only one correct way for proper closet organization," says Ellen. "Fold the towel in thirds the long way, and then in half and half again the short way. With a striped towel, it's really easy to maintain consistency because you can use the stripes as a straight edge to get a perfect 90-degree fold."

When you fold striped towels, Di finds that the stripes act as a built-in guide. "I suggest folding so the stripes stay straight and show on the outside. First, lay the towel flat and line up the stripes, then fold along the stripes to keep the edges crisp. This gives you a neat, hotel-style look and makes stacking easier since every towel ends up the same shape," she notes.

"If you use a folding method like the one in the Dusen Dusen video, as you fold, keep the lines straight and parallel. This prevents bunching and keeps everything looking neat. When you put the towels in the closet, the stripes will line up and give you a clean, organized look with little effort."

Wash day — the two words guaranteed to spike your blood pressure. I’ll do anything to extend my wash days and save my arms from going numb from what feels like hours of washing and drying. I’ve tried everything from shower caps to adjustable shower heads, but I can’t say any of them provide a relaxing experience.

A rustling shower cap with a shower head that simultaneously sprays my face and misses half of my body really isn’t the spa-like experience I envisioned for my shower room design. But is the shoulder shower the answer to our hair-wash-free days?

Sitting at shoulder height, this shower features a long, horizontal showerhead that falls at an angle over your shoulders, avoiding your hair entirely. It’s changed the way I think about showering, and I think it might be the shower solution my blow-dry has been looking for.

Expert Emma explains, “Unlike traditional rainfall showers or overhead showers that wet the entire body, including hair, the shoulder shower is positioned at neck height to provide targeted coverage and keep hair dry. The broad PowderRain spray envelops the user in either refreshing or calming warmth, depending on their needs, perfect for post-sauna invigoration or pre-bedtime relaxation. What Are the Pros and Cons of a Shoulder Shower?

Let’s start with the pros. In terms of user experience, it’s ideal. The rainfall design limits splash and is undoubtedly soothing. The biggest pro? The wide shower head design. As a stereotypically cold girl, a scorching hot shower is my go-to for relaxing, and the wide horizontal shower head really envelops you in comparison to a handheld showerhead. The minimal hair splash is just the cherry on top.

The shelf design is also a big positive. It’s not often we see multipurpose showers, so a design that tackles shower clutter while looking great will always get a gold star from me.

Onto the cons. The big one is its height restriction. What is shoulder height for you may not be shoulder height for your partner or other family members, and the fixed shower head makes it quite a concrete decision. In consideration of this, it really needs to be used in conjunction with at least an overhead showerhead, ideally a handheld shower as well.

If you have a larger shower space and budget to do so, it’s a great addition to your shower room. But if space is restricted, you might find the full shower system a bit overwhelming. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the shoulder shower is limited to a PowderRain spray effect. For me, it’s ideal and super relaxing, but if you like to switch up your showers to a more invigorating shower experience, it may not be for you.

What Are the Best Showers for Not Getting Your Hair Wet?

Though the shoulder shower has a pretty distinct design, some alternative products can achieve similar results and save your good hair days

With the addition of shoulder showers and wider showerheads, non-wash days will become a little bit easier and still deliver that all-important spa experience. The only trouble you'll have is picking the perfect finish.

When traveling abroad, do you ever notice you're able to utilize the electrical outlets in the bathrooms — a lot of hotel bathrooms have a hairdryer in the actual bathroom, after all. You see them in American homes a lot, too. Those big bathroom vanity drawers with hairdryers docked inside, plugged in and ready to use.

But as much as anyone would appreciate the ease of drying your hair in front of a big bathroom mirror, it's not something you can do in the UK.

Electrical safety in bathrooms is the strictest in the home, and for good reason. With water increasing the risk of electric shock, regulations are tighter on where your plug sockets can go. Paul Collins, Technical Director at NICEIC — the UK’s leading certification body for the electrical industry, explains the reasons behind this.

Why Can’t You Include Plug Sockets in UK Bathrooms?

Plug sockets aren’t necessarily banned from bathrooms; it just depends on where they're placed.

Bathrooms in the UK are divided into safety zones, based on the distance from the bath or shower. If you want to include a socket in the bathroom, it must be at least 2.5 meters horizontally from the edge of the bath or shower, and each zone has specific regulations for its installation. "In most homes, bathrooms simply aren’t large enough for this distance to be achieved," Paul explains. "You rarely see conventional socket-outlets installed."

Why are other countries allowed plug sockets?

Australia, America, Japan, France, Spain, and Germany are amongst some of the countries that allow plug sockets in the bathroom. It’s as if the UK is being treated like a child, not to be trusted with electricity and water, but the reason is surprising.

Most homes outside the UK use circuit breakers, whereas in the UK we use fused plugs. These circuit breakers trip whenever they’re near water, even if the current is low. These installations also have Residual Current Protection (RCP), which are also known as safety switches. "RCD protection quickly disconnects the power in the event of a fault," says Paul Collins. "It helps prevent a serious injury."

Where to include a socket in the bathroom if you really want one?

"In areas closer to water, only specially designed equipment is permitted. For example, shaver supply units are allowed because they include an isolating transformer, which significantly reduces the risk of electric shock," Paul explains.

"Low-voltage equipment supplied by a Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) source may also be permitted in certain zones, provided it is correctly installed and suitable for bathroom use," Paul adds. "Standard socket-outlets, however, are not allowed in these higher-risk areas under any circumstances."

This means that, realistically, you can't use mains-connected appliances in a bathroom, and you should never connect them up with an extension lead to do so, as this can be just as unsafe. However, portable appliances may give you some of the flexibility you require, as long as you make peace with charging them outside of the bathroom.

There's no getting around the fact that your bathroom is going to need some towel storage, but finding an elegant and stylish way to do this can be a bit of a struggle. Then, add in the issue of a tiny, cramped bathroom, and that struggle turns into a full-blown fiasco.

It's an understandable difficulty. After finding space for all of your toiletries and other necessities, squeezing an acceptable number of towels into your small bathroom as well can seem like a tall order, which is exactly why so many of us end up with a pile on the floor. However, I am here to offer some solutions. Or at least, our experts are.

As much of a minefield as it can feel to us, for the bathroom experts, this is just another issue they deal with on a day-to-day basis. So, I picked their brains for all the best towel storage ideas, especially designed to suit even the tiniest of bathrooms.

1. Hybrid Vanity Units

There are benefits to open and closed shelving, as well as some surprising downsides to both, too. But instead of committing to just one and having to suffer the consequences, why not get the best of both worlds and include a little bit of both in your bathroom design?

As Tissino's design manager Richard Eaton explains, "Open and closed bathroom vanity units each play a distinct role within a bathroom, and when they are brought together thoughtfully, they allow the space to feel both purposeful and composed rather than purely functional."

When you rely solely on one form of storage in your space, you'll likely struggle to make your room feel truly balanced. Too much open shelving can make your design feel messy or cluttered, but if you go the other way and keep everything closed, you may find your bathroom feels too sterile.

Open shelving can bring a decorative aspect to your space, as well as what Richard refers to as "a sense of ease, offering a place for the items you reach for daily," while closed shelving offers some discretion in your design, allowing you to hide away your less appealing toiletries and bathroom accessories. It's in the balance of these two that you will reach a true design equilibrium.

And while this will be significant in any bathroom, as Richard explains, "In smaller bathrooms, this balance becomes even more important, as relying solely on open storage can leave the space feeling exposed and unsettled, while too many closed fronts can introduce a heaviness that makes the room appear tighter than it is."

He continues, saying, "Bringing both together allows the vanity to feel lighter and more in tune with the room as a whole, while still delivering the storage capacity needed for daily use. It also creates an opportunity to shape what is on show and what is tucked away, introducing moments of character without overwhelming the space, which is often what defines a bathroom that feels thoughtfully designed rather than simply well equipped."

2. Towel Rack and Rail Combination

Another proponent for a combined storage approach is Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs. But, instead of an open and closed vanity unit, Keeley recommends opting for a towel rack and rail combo, a blend she describes as "one of the most effective ways to introduce practical storage into a bathroom without interrupting the overall feel of the space," which is not just useful in smaller bathrooms, but essential.

Including both of these towel storage solutions alongside one another may sound excessive, but in actuality, it will help reduce clutter, keeping your space more streamlined and organized. "By pairing a shelf with a rail beneath, you create a layered solution that accommodates both freshly laundered towels and those in regular use, ensuring everything has a place without the need for additional fittings elsewhere in the room," says Keeley. With a shelf for storing neatly folded, fresh towels, and a rail for drying off your used ones, this combination brings structure to your space.

"This type of integrated design is especially valuable in smaller bathrooms, where introducing separate hooks, rails, and shelving can quickly lead to a fragmented look that feels cluttered rather than calm," Keeley explains.

Finding one piece that fulfills multiple functions is a go-to move when decorating small rooms, and in the bathroom, it brings the secondary function of preventing you from overloading your storage. As Keeley describes, " It also supports a more restrained approach to how many towels are kept within the space at any one time, as the shelf naturally encourages a limited, neatly arranged stack rather than overfilling. The result is a bathroom that feels organized and easy to use, with storage that works quietly in the background rather than competing for attention."

3. Create a Cubby

In particularly small bathrooms, adding additional freestanding storage isn't always an option - just a shower, sink, and toilet can feel like a push at times. In these cases, "The key is to work with the space rather than against it," argues Louise Ashdown, from West One Bathrooms.

Practically speaking, this could mean moving away from a conventional design approach, swapping out clunky cabinets and shelving for space-conscious, integrated solutions instead. And when it comes to smart storage ideas, Louise argues, "Recessed niches are one of the best solutions available."

Most commonly used in walk-in showers for some added, discreet toiletry storage, this concept works just as well outside the shower. It doesn't have to be anything major, either. As Louise says, "Even a vertical recess just 20cm wide at the end of a shower enclosure is enough to neatly store rolled towels without eating into the floor space you can't afford to lose."

4. Throw Them In A Basket

The best storage ideas don't have to cost a fortune; many of them are just as accessible on a budget. One of my favorite examples of a smart, cost-effective storage solution is the humble basket.

Unlike open, full-display shelves, baskets grant you a bit of discretion, the perfect way to conceal clutter in a bathroom for those of us who aren't naturally super tidy. This is a point Fred Horlock, design director at Neptune, highlights, saying, "If you're not confident about keeping the towels looking neat and tidy on a shelf, opt for open-weave baskets to help keep everything organized."

And while open, woven baskets are perfect for relaxing, boho bathroom designs, there are enough options to satisfy any design style. Scandi decor lovers may favor the classic HAY basket, while some low, leather baskets would look perfect in a chic spa bathroom design.

5. Wall-Mounted Rails

Even in the smallest of bathrooms, there are still ways to make space for the classic towel storage solution; you just need to know how to pick the right one.

The secret lies in maximizing your floor space, says Louise, who recommends opting for a wall-mounted rail to hang your bathroom towels on over a free-standing design.

As she explains, "Wall-mounted rails are far preferable to floor-standing options in a compact room, as keeping the floor clear creates the illusion of more space. A tall, slimline heated rail is particularly effective because it maximises height without dominating the footprint."

Simple and elegant, this easy solution proves that there's really no need to overthink when it comes to decorating your small bathroom.

The right entrance sets the scene for what's to come. It's a way of signalling importance, or creating a little touch of drama. And when it comes to your bathroom, there's no better way of doing that than with a marble architrave.

When designing a bathroom, it can feel difficult to make a statement. You want to show that it's an elegant, luxurious space, but you aren't able to use the typical devices you'd fall back on, like art or rich, soft materials. Instead, you have to be a bit more creative with your design, which is exactly where the marble architrave comes in.

Think of it like a frame for your shower, or whatever bathroom feature you so please. It's a simple architectural device that will elevate your space, making it feel more distinctive and significant, while adding a touch of luxury, too. Experts share how to use this statement-making feature for a marble bathroom design that packs a punch.

What Is An Architrave?

Dating back to Ancient Greece and Rome, this long-standing architectural feature refers to the molded trim that runs across an opening, such as a door, window, or, in some cases, a shower.

In its initial form, the architrave, or epistle, referred solely to the lowest level of the entablature, which would rest directly atop the columns, playing a crucial structural role in a building. It's not until later that this feature took on a decorative role as well as a functional one.

Nowadays, architraves are identified as a type of architectural molding, used as a door trim to conceal the joins between doors and walls, creating a sleeker, more polished finish.

While most interior architraves are made from wood, other materials, including natural stones, can help create a more striking, luxurious effect.

Although in classical settings, architraves fulfilled a largely structural function, interior designer Portia Fox explains that "in contemporary interiors, a marble architrave functions as both structural support and to create aesthetic definition."

Why Your Bathrooms Needs a Marble Architrave

Beyond the obvious visual appeal of this design style, including a marble architrave in your bathroom has some other benefits to offer, too.

When designing your bathroom, it can often feel like quite a struggle to create a clear sense of definition between the various zones. When the material remains consistent throughout the design, it's easy for the whole room to feel like one, monotonous space, making for a less complex, visually interesting room.

This is exactly what a marble architrave prevents from happening, says Portia. "In bathroom design, marble architraves are being used to frame shower and wet room entrances, and to subtly separate areas such as WCs from the main space."

This 'framing' device is a subtle yet impactful way to introduce more definition into your space, whether it be around your shower or your toilet area. It signals a small but important divide between that space and the wider room, and would be as helpful in small bathrooms as it would in sprawling large bathrooms.

Although it creates a separation within the design, it can also help to introduce more cohesion, too, depending on the materials used. "The material creates a precise outline that aesthetically aligns with surrounding surfaces, maintaining continuity while clearly defining different zones within the layout," says Portia.

While many of these effects come from the architectural definition of an architrave, the overall impact is also largely down to the material used. Compared to the typical wooden structures, these marble finishes feel elevated and eye-catching. "Marble architraves introduce a level of individuality that painted or timber alternatives cannot achieve, due to the natural variation in veining and tone," says Portia.

This is why using marble has long been the blueprint for luxurious, elegant modern bathroom designs; the material has a natural, effortless beauty, immediately elevating the most basic designs, even when only used minimally.

"They contribute to a more considered and tactile interior, reflecting a broader shift away from strict minimalism towards materials with depth and texture," says Portia. "In bathrooms in particular, they help create a cohesive scheme by either aligning with existing stone finishes or providing contrast. They can also define thresholds and zones without the need for additional partitions, maintaining openness while adding structure."

How to Get the Look at Home

The first decision you'll have to make for this design is the exact type of marble you'll want to work with. There's a huge amount of variation across natural stone, with something to appeal to every taste, so it can be tricky to narrow it down at first.

When making this decision, Portia recommends, "The choice of marble should be guided by the intended atmosphere of the space. Stones with restrained veining and softer tones create a more subdued environment, while those with stronger contrast introduce more visual energy."

This comes down to the atmosphere and energy you're hoping to create in your home. Start by identifying that, and then choose the right stone for you from there.

If you're drawn to a relaxing, spa bathroom look, Portia suggests, "Softer marbles such as Carrara or Calacatta", adding that "more saturated stones like Verde Guatemala or Rosso Levanto are better suited to spaces where contrast and definition are required."

Choosing the stone is just the beginning, though. As Portia explains, "Finish is also important, with honed marble offering a softer appearance and polished finishes providing more reflectivity."

Again, think of this choice in the wider context of your space, considering how it will interact and respond to your bathroom flooring and other materials. "Materials within the room should relate to one another through tone, veining, or finish, rather than matching exactly," says Portia.

This element of cohesion can be further emphasized in how you style the room, too. "Styling should focus on maintaining a clear relationship between materials within the space. This can be achieved by referencing tones or veining from the architrave in other elements, such as flooring or vanity surfaces," says Portia.

When choosing the other materials in your room, try picking out some warm, soft elements. "Marble, as a hard material, should be balanced with softer elements, including textiles and lighting, to avoid a stark result," explains Portia.

As an interiors journalist, I’ve been writing about tiles for years. And I have to say, the incredible selection of wall and floor tiles available in 2026 is beyond exciting.

Because today’s tiles are no longer a design afterthought — they are often the main feature in our kitchens and bathrooms. From the striped bathroom tile trend to classic checkerboard floors, today’s wall and floor tiles elevate your home into a beautifully unique space. Quorn Stone is a one-stop shop for natural stones, porcelain, and ceramic tiles. The family-run business, founded in 1995, started out importing hand-painted terracotta tiles from Spain. And today the brand has nine UK showrooms, dedicated to timeless, classic tiles. They are all about longevity over novelty and want your tiles to feel as beautiful in 10 years’ time as they do the day you bought them.

That’s not to say these are tiles without personality – far from it. And Quorn Stone are champions of soothing nature-led colour palettes and considered patterns. Think striking stripes using its Pastello Pistachio gloss metro tiles or for a touch of Mediterranean cool back home, the new Marisol Amalia decorative tiles.

Then there are herringbone tumbled limestones and monochrome marbles for heritage tiles for modern-day living.

Florim

Otto Tiles & Design

If you’ve fallen in love with Zellige and Bejmat tiles, you can probably thank Otto Tiles & Design for bringing them to the UK.

In fact, Otto is an industry-leading tile studio with a UK HQ and a cornucopia of tiles that are off-the-scale gorgeous. It’s not just authentic Moroccan tiles Otto sells but terrazzo, ceramic, mosaic, and marble — all with a bold approach to color and unexpected pattern.

Founded by Damla Turgut in 2015 (who designs and curates everything herself) Otto is probably best known for its colorful striped tiles as well as its authentic Moroccan tiles.

But it is perhaps Otto’s latest Kismet collection of handcrafted tiles that sums up the brand. These beautiful encaustic cement tiles pay homage to traditional craftsmanship, women, and Turkish heritage. Think striking tiles in speckled pink circles, abstract patterns in rich mustard and deep navy blue, and walnut tiles with a cool pictorial vibe.

Claybrook

Since opening its doors in 2018, Claybrook Studio has been a fabulous source of stunning yet affordable tiles.

I love how the brand sources pretty yet practical tiles to reinvigorate any style of kitchen and bathroom. Take the Zellige-style Tan-Tan and Fellini tiles in glossy ceramic. You get all the visual appeal of a handmade tile but in a hardwearing material that’s easier to install and maintain, and more cost-effective to boot.

Claybrook also designs its own tiles. You’ll find gorgeous plains such as the Med-influenced Bungalow 22 tiles in pool blue, mottled dusty pink, and lawn green - which come in slim, square, and rectangular formats to suit every project.

The brand has also partnered with English Heritage to create an exclusive collection of real limestone floors.

Now you know where to head for the best tile retailers, how about bathroom lighting? Lighting your bathroom is far more challenging than choosing lights and lamps for other rooms in the house. Bathroom lights need to be IP-rated so they can work safely in a room that’s bombarded with splashes, condensation, and steam.

Clad in marble and soaked in natural light, this bathroom exudes California-cool style, true to its Los Angeles location. Originally constructed in the 1950s, this mid-century home had barely been touched since, leaving it in need of some pretty major reconstructive work before Jamie and Chad Braverman, the young couple who'd purchased this home, could move in.

Calling on Christie Ward and Staver Gray from Ward + Gray, the team set out on a mission to maintain the mid-century charm that made this home so special to begin with, while modernizing it to fit this young family's lifestyle — a goal that's as clear in this modern bathroom as it is through the rest of the home.

"All the changes that we made to the property stemmed from our main goal — to transform the home from something that was rather compartmentalized and dated into a true family home that reflects the way the owners live," says Christie.

The Brief

When designing this space, Christie Ward and Staver Gray had to create visual continuity with the modern bedroom it directly leads on from, while still ensuring the bathroom design was as functional as possible.

"The primary focus was reconfiguring the layout for both functionality and the way the couple wants to live," explains Christie. The home, which had barely been touched since it was built in 1956, was rich in architectural details and mid-century charm, but lacked the flow and cohesion the young family was looking for.

Through a full gut renovation, the home was reconstructed with the family in mind, and this room was no different. "We designed a spacious wet room featuring a soaking tub and dual shower heads, along with his-and-hers vanities and a separate dry vanity for Jamie," says Christie.

This sense of separation, with dual vanities and two shower heads, allowed the couple to have their own space as well as plenty of bathroom storage — another priority for the couple to ensure the space would be clean and uncluttered, explains Christie.

The Process

When modernizing period properties, there is a constant battle between the desire to preserve and the need to update. In this room, a pre-existing skylight provided beautiful natural light, but also created some tricky constraints to work around. "We wanted to preserve it at all costs," says Christie

But, as much as they wanted to keep this feature intact, this did not come without its struggles. "Its presence led to some angled walls and carefully placed, swagged light fixtures, but the effort was well worth it: the skylight fills the space with warm California sunlight, creating a bright, uplifting atmosphere inside the bathroom," explains Christie.

Emphasizing and maintaining this light was a core part of the design process and came through in every aspect of the design, from the materials to the bathroom layout. Because the bathroom is directly connected to the bedroom, creating some sense of cohesion between the two rooms was another important aspect in the design process.

"We maintained a sense of aesthetic continuity by carrying key materials throughout — white plaster, white oak flooring, and burnished brass — while the spaces themselves are separated by a long hallway. This separation allows the bathroom to feel serene and private, a space unto itself," says Christie.

The Design

Surrounded by the California landscape, referring back to nature was a leading principle for this home. "We aimed for this space to feel like a natural extension of both the home and the outdoors," Staver says, "To reinforce that connection, we added a door providing direct access to the backyard, inviting in fresh California air and seamless indoor-outdoor living."

That California cool design style is consistent throughout the home, in the earthy color palette, relaxed style, and crucially, through the materials. In the bathroom, Patagonia Stone forms the primary base of the design, used for the vanity counters, the wet room, and the trim surrounding the conservatory-style shower.

"Patagonia is striking for its rare combination of granite and quartzite, offering translucent crystal veining alongside rich, deep black areas," explains Christie. "I think it has the unique quality of feeling luxe without feeling overly traditional. We used a honed finish to allow it to feel more at home in a casual, California environment."

While the rest of the home had to be consciously designed around the young children, in the parents' rooms, they took the opportunity to explore more experimental design choices.

"In the primary suite, we allowed ourselves to prioritize style over strict practicality, since kid-friendly materials were less of a concern," says Staver. "That said, we still used all outdoor-performance fabrics to ensure durability without compromising elegance. A standout detail is the fabric on Jamie’s vanity stool, a favorite sourced from Maria Flora."

For years, white has been the default setting when it comes to bathrooms — it‘s clean, pure, and provides that hotel-ready look we often love. But a new wave of interiors is quietly dismantling this idea, and we are beginning to come round to the idea of replacing the stark white, clinical brightness with something far darker, more dramatic, even a little bit seductive.

Dark bathrooms were once considered risky and impractical — now, they are quickly emerging as the ultimate spa-like luxury. We’re now actively seeking out immersive, tactile, and unapologetically atmospheric spaces to escape to within our own homes as we explore darker bathroom color ideas. "Dark bathrooms tap into the idea of the bathroom as a true retreat, where sensory calm replaces overstimulation, and the design plays a crucial role in setting the mood," says Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms. "The key is the absence of harsh lighting, replacing it instead with soft, ambient illumination that provides just enough light to navigate the space without breaking the sense of calm."

It feels exciting to finally be leaning into something in the bathroom that once felt very unachievable and frowned upon, and have the chance to delve into the depths of some very different materials. We’re talking inky stones, smoked glass, ambient glows of light, and luxury escapism, all proving darkness can be handled well and lit beautifully, not shrinking a room but totally elevating it as we experience the option of new materials and feelings.

1. Burgundy Drench

As part of a dark and moody guest suite, adjacent to a dark teal bedroom, design studio Another Human wanted to saturate the bathroom in an equally dark tone to allow a consistent mood to follow all the way through.

“While monochromatic, the mosaic shower tile has some color variation, and the movement in the marble countertop adds just enough visual interest so that the materials don't feel too flat,” explains principal Leah Ring. Note how different textures and materials of a one-color red bathroom scheme naturally provide depth and movement throughout.

2. Modern but Monumental

With little or no natural light, sometimes the only way is to embrace that and own it with sleek lighting and dark materials. “Dark bathrooms benefit from a deeper color palette, with matt black or gunmetal brassware, dark-toned tiles, and rich waterproof wallpapers creating a cocooning effect,” says Louise.

Recessed LED lighting subtly implemented around ceilings, niches, or floors creates a gentle glow, while LED mirrors offer diffused, glare-free light that feels soothing. Louise explains, “Integrated lighting within showerheads enhances the experience further, casting a soft, enveloping light through steam and water. Gentle illumination within basins and vanity units adds depth and atmosphere, reinforcing that spa-like feel. ”This bathroom offers the perfect juxtaposition — smooth grey walls hosting the contemporary black shower, while featuring a nod to nature, grandeur, and history through an architectural marble slab and basin, built in for function, and full of character and tonal variation."

Next, the smoked glass and recessed LED strip lighting take it one step further. “Texture becomes essential in darker spaces, with layered finishes, tactile materials, and carefully considered lighting working together to avoid flatness.”

To finish, for that added wellness element, features such as the Sunshower introduce a gentle dose of UV light to support healthy vitamin D levels, even in winter, all without compromising the tranquil environment. "Ultimately, creating a dark bathroom is about balance, where darkness, texture, and restrained lighting combine to transform the bathroom into a calming, restorative sanctuary."

3. Inky Stone

This stone-effect bathroom, designed by Lucy Harris Studio features dark, inky tones covering the walls, doors, architrave, and skirting, adding interest and movement throughout the space.

The large double mirrors reflect this artistic effect, immersing you fully in the abstract environment, yet it's not overkill for the finish, and the high ceilings and general architecture relieve the intensity.

The dark wooden floor finish allows for the walls to remain the focal point, enhancing the rich impact of the main effect. Even the view into the next room is kept dark in color; this all adds to creating a seamless flow between the spaces.

4. Passionate Red

If you find yourself working with little to no natural light, it can be wise to curate a scheme that is intentionally dark, instead of fighting it with bright whites. Dark bathrooms are all about drama and detail, and the combination of rich wall tones, well-chosen lighting, floor covering, and an almighty marble slab transforms a space.

Now, let’s take a moment for the heat brought about by this color choice. We all know how red translates the feeling of warmth, and in this case, it's comfortable yet passionate, perhaps even a little sensual, pairing nicely with the other chosen materials. The extra spa feel comes about in the setup of this dressing area. What a luxury to have the space for this, as well as the bathroom vanity unit with the basin and essentials.

“The deep red veining and natural texture of the stone add depth and warmth, creating a cocoon-like sanctuary,” says Oli Webb, director of Cullifords. When paired with rougher textures such as matte metals, aged wood, or even soft, tactile textiles, a dark bathroom feels sophisticated and exciting. “White will always be classic, but these bold, opulent tones prove that darkness can be equally striking."

5. Dark and Natural

Green walls, green tiles, a green cushion, and a woven wooden bench all contribute to creating an enveloping and restorative space. The connection to nature is second to none, immediately warming the space in a calm and tranquil manner. Even though it's a dark green bathroom, it doesn’t feel heavy; it feels balanced.

“Verias Green marble brings richness and depth through its layered veining and tonal variation, giving the room a sense of permanence that immediately elevates it beyond a purely decorative scheme,” says Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra. “Dark stone like this absorbs light in a softer way than flat finishes, which is why it lends itself so naturally to spa-like environments.”

Grazzie explains how the interplay between depth and warmth is key in dark bathrooms, where material choice has a far greater impact than just color alone. “What makes this approach successful is the confidence to let the stone lead. Rather than relying on white surfaces to brighten the room, the design allows the natural character of the marble to define the atmosphere, creating a bathroom that feels grounded, calm, and designed for long, unhurried use rather than immediate visual impact.”

The purity element of white we all seem to crave can come about by styling a classic spa gown and towels, where they'll be positively accentuated by the darkness of the bathroom.

With limited natural light and a desire to create impact through color, material, and detail, embracing the darkness becomes an opportunity rather than a restriction. Rather than fighting against the darkness, leaning into the shadows allows the space to transform into something immersive — a bathroom designed not purely for function but also as a retreat, a place to cocoon yourself and momentarily disconnect.

From deep greens and inky blacks to earthy browns and lustful red bathrooms, darker palettes offer a rich foundation for layering texture and finish, even as a small bathroom color. So let us delve into the discovery of new materials that we may not have considered before, and when carefully contemplated, these combinations could demonstrate how depth, contrast, and restraint can elevate the bathroom into a quietly dramatic, spa-like escape.

For far, far too long, we've accepted the idea that our bathroom fixtures all had to be one monotonous sweep of bright, sterile white. A white sink, a white toilet, and a white bath to match. What an absolute bore. Which is exactly why, in 2026, we're officially turning a new leaf and embracing bright, bold, and brilliant colors for our bathroom sinks.

"We’re so used to white as the go-to color for bathroom furniture – it’s utterly predictable, and we’re often wedded to the idea that the toilet, sink, and bath all have to match," says Rob Whitaker, creative director of Claybrook. But, he continues, "Adding a jolt of color with a stylish basin creates an immediate sense of personality and interest. It makes a welcome point of difference and a talking point in a room that can otherwise fall into the trap of being functional over joyful."

As Rob mentions, it's so easy to get bogged down in the practicality aspects of your bathroom design that you completely forget it's allowed to be fun. But these bold bathroom colors for your sink seamlessly combine fun with functionality, for a space that makes a statement, without it feeling overwhelming.

1. Intense Reds

Red is one of the most powerful and bold colors to use in your interiors, and your bathroom sink is a surprisingly effective way to introduce the tone into your home's design. I'm a strong believer in the power of the unexpected red theory, and I can't think of a better way to bring the theory to life than with a poppy red bathroom sink. I mean, it's certainly unexpected, and it's easier to style than you may think.

"A brightly colored sink is the statement piece in a bathroom, so use it as the starting point for styling," suggests Rob, who also noted that their brick red marbleform basin has proven to be one of the most popular colorways as of late.

To pull this type of statement feature off, your styling will be key, and according to Rob, "You can go one of two ways." Firstly, if you aren't afraid of a little bit of boldness, Rob recommends a full color-drenching approach, "Where you add tiles or paint that match or are a shade or two lighter or darker." Or, for a slightly more subdued finish, Rob suggests making the basin the highlight of your design, and keeping the rest of the space relatively neutral, with a few complementary splashes of the same shade, "Towels are an easy feature to add, or you can pick up the same color with a shower curtain or blind, bathroom accessories, or simply a stripe in some decorative wallpaper," he says.

But, no matter which approach you opt for, a bold, red sink is sure to make your bathroom stand out from the rest.

2. Pastel Pink

There's something about a fully pink bathroom that sets my heart aflutter. It's your childhood Barbie dreamhouse fantasy brought to life, and what better way to seal the deal than with a matching pastel pink sink?

Of course, you don't have to go full Barbie-mode to make this sink color work; in fact, depending on how you style it, a pink sink can even look, dare I say, quite edgy. Against a dark backdrop, for example, used as a point of contrast, the pink sink can take on a whole different feel.

But, of course, it also works well for softer, lighter spaces. As Chris says, "Pastels such as pink or green can make a pretty, light feature, especially when highlighted with a bold backdrop, or softened with tiles in clean whites or warm neutrals."

If the softer, full-pastel look is more appealing to you, Keeley Sutcliffe, from BC Designs, says, "The sink color tends to work best when it is echoed through colorful tile grout, wall color, or smaller details, so it feels part of a joined-up palette rather than an isolated statement."

3. Shades of Green

"For 2026, we’re seeing a shift away from neutrals towards palettes that still feel grounded but carry more expressive depth," Camila Masi, from Otto Tiles, says, continuing, "In bathrooms, this is translating into sinks finished in soft mineral greens."

For the past few years, interior designers have continuously embraced warm, earthy color palettes, and this trend is just as present in bathroom design as it is throughout the rest of the home. Switching out the stark white sink for something slightly softer and more natural-leaning can make your entire space feel more relaxed.

Terracottas, creams, and other brown shades are all good options for this, but nothing seems to beat the appeal of a splash of green. Whether you take notes from the ultra-retro avocado bathrooms or opt for a more muted tone, this color family offers up plenty of room to play around and find the right shade for you.

Under the notoriously harsh and unflattering glow of bathroom lighting, these shades tend to fare better than other bold colors. "The strongest statement colors for basins are the ones that feel anchored rather than loud, because bathrooms are typically lit with a mix of daylight, downlights, and mirror lighting, and overly bright tones can shift quickly across the day," explains Alex Gibbs, from BK Eleven, "Earth-led colours tend to hold their depth under changing light, so think of greens that lean mossy or smoky."

As an annex-dweller, I'm pretty well-versed in the art of fitting a lot into a little (no innuendo intended). Finding savvy, space-saving solutions that keep my living room, kitchen, or bedroom tidy and clutter-free generally proves no issue. The bathroom, however, is a different story.

Whether you reside in a capacious mansion or a tiny studio like mine, space will be at a premium in your bathroom. This room is the smallest on any house blueprint (unless your dimensions include closets), so finding space for all your cosmetics, toiletries, and other bathing essentials can prove a huge challenge (let alone those belonging to other family members). That's exactly why space-wasting clutter has no business in the bathroom.

And yet, even seasoned small-space dwellers like myself are guilty of a few bathroom storage missteps. To a professional organizer, the culprits are instantly obvious — the everyday items quietly taking up more room than they deserve. Keen to find out more? 1. Old, Empty, or Half-Used Toiletries

Every single one of us is guilty of overlooking empty toiletries from time to time. You can get away with it if you've run out of shampoo during your busy morning routine, as long as you vow to throw away the empty bottle as soon as you return home. If you're hoarding a host of empty bottles, however, something's got to give.

The same goes for half-used or expired bottles, too. "They take up valuable cabinet and shower space and are often kept just in case," says Di Ter Avest, founder of Di is Organized. "If it hasn’t been used in months or has expired, it’s only adding visual and mental clutter."

Professional organizer Sue Spencer of A Life More Organised recommends choosing the two or three items that you're currently using and moving any usable extras to your bathroom storage. "This will make it easy to grab the shampoo you actually want to use," she says. "Consider also buying a shower caddy to hang on the wall and keep the floor clear. It will make your morning shower much more enjoyable if you’re not tripping over bottles."

2. Oversized Shower Product Collections

In a similar vein, there's no need to crowd your entire bathroom niche with a 10-step collection of hair care cosmetics. To keep your space functional and visually clean, limit yourself to a few essentials (and even consider decanting them into visually-appealing amber glass bottles like these ones, from Amazon).

"Too many bottles crowd the shower and make cleaning harder," explains Di. "Most people only rotate between a few products at a time." Any extras, she says, can be stored outside the shower. For your weekly hair mask or exfoliator treatment, just bring the products into the shower as needed. (This will also help them keep for longer, too.)

3. Extra Towels

For a long time, towel storage was the bane of my life. I had too many to fit in my small bathroom, but there was little room elsewhere in my home. The truth is, most of us have far more towels than we need, and excess towels only take up valuable space in this already squeezed part of the home.

For those must-have extras like beach towels and guest towels, Sue recommends storing them elsewhere, such as the airing cupboard or in an underbed storage box. "This also makes sure that the towels you are using get a chance to properly dry and are rotated through the wash regularly," she says.

Di adds that fancy display towels are also a waste of space. "These take up prime storage and serve no real purpose," she says. "Instead, keep towels functional and accessible, and rotate a small set you actually use."

4. Duplicate Cosmetics

In a small bathroom, duplicates will always be a waste of space. "If you love trying out different skincare products, the chances are you have a stash piled up and half-used on shelves in your bathroom," says Sue. "Remove any you didn’t like or wouldn’t use and store any spares elsewhere in a ‘stock’ cupboard," she instructs.

This isn't simply a case of helping to declutter your bathroom — there's also a hygiene factor, too. "Skincare has a lifespan, shown in months by the little bottle icon on the side of most skincare products," Sue explains. "You don’t want to risk using any out-of-date products on your face."

5. Under-Sink "Catch-All" Storage

A closed cabinet under your bathroom vanity might seem like a practical decision — until it's overrun with clutter. "This area often becomes a dumping ground for random items that don’t belong in the bathroom," explains Di. "Instead, use bins to store only true bathroom categories, like cleaning supplies or backstock."

On the topic of cleaning supplies, don't get carried away here, either. "Multiple sprays and cleaners take up space that could be better used for daily essentials," Di adds. One multi-purpose bathroom cleaner and a bottle of bleach are typically all that need storing in the bathroom.

6. Hotel Miniatures

I'm a sucker for a miniature toiletry, so you bet anything worth using is coming home with me at the end of a hotel stay. But while they come in super handy for future travels, they can take up valuable space in a bathroom if they're not kept in check.

"Either use them, or put them in your toiletry bag or weekend bag so you remember to take them away with you next time," suggests Sue. They can make a thoughtful addition to a guest bathroom, too, where they won't encroach on your daily bathroom space.

7. Duplicate Cosmetic Tools

Duplicate shampoo bottles, I might excuse. Duplicate tools like hairdryers, straighteners, or brushes? That's a step too far. "Having multiples of the same item eats up drawer and counter space fast, so keep one primary version and store specialty tools elsewhere," says Di.

Of course, if you don't use these items, throwing them out or donating them is the best course of action to free up space. If your bathroom cabinet is overrun with tangled cables, toothless combs, and hair care tools that look like ancient relics, it's time to kick the clutter for good.

8. Old medication

When was the last time you took an inventory of your medicine cabinet? Chances are, shelves are going to waste. Expired or duplicate medication is almost inevitable — after all, we all like to be on the safe side. Outdated drugs simply mean you haven't needed them in a long time (which is always good news), but they serve no purpose if they're taking up valuable space.

"Dedicate time to take everything out and check the dates," Sue suggests. "It’s best just to store the medicine you need in one place at home and work your way through it rather than have lots of packets on the go at the same time."

9. Countertop Organizers That Are Too Large

Storage bins and containers might seem like a useful way to organize a bathroom vanity, but more often than not, they end up being unnecessarily bulky and cluttering your space.

Di says she often sees bathroom caddies and organizers overwhelm small counters when organizing clients' homes. "Instead, I'd recommend using slim trays or moving daily items into a drawer to free up visual space," she says. Just like any other room of the home, a little bit of breathing room always pays off in a bathroom, so store those jars of cotton pads and Q-tips in a drawer on a shelf instead of on your vanity counter.

Finally, don't buy into accessories you don't need. The likes of bath trays and foot spas are rarely used, so they don't deserve prime storage in our bathrooms. As Di notes, "these items sound nice in theory, but often sit unused and collect dust".

In recent years, the bathroom has evolved into a spa sanctuary, a space to relax and disconnect from our busy, digital-fuelled lives.

And with the switch from functionality to wellbeing, bathroom tiles are ditching smooth, uniform textures and celebrating imperfect finishes and uneven surfaces, say the experts. The result is a bathroom that feels calm, grounded, and full of depth.

“For 2026, the most exciting shift in bathroom tiles is a move towards imperfection,” says interior designer Kunal Trehan, founder of Touched Interiors. “Handmade-effect ceramics, soft, uneven zellige bathroom tiles, and tiles with visible glaze variation are replacing anything overly polished or uniform. The appeal lies in their individuality, creating depth, movement, and a more human feel.”

And this works whether you choose to tile drench every surface for an immersive mood or tile one area of your bathroom, like the shower or floor.

“Surfaces inspired by the earth, from weathered stone to layered clay and mineral textures, reveal their beauty through subtle imperfections and irregular finishes,” says María D Arráez, director of Tile of Spain UK. “These are tiles that invite touch as much as sight – surfaces that don’t just decorate a room, but add a sense of time, craft, and connection to nature.”

2. Hand Glazed Tiles

Matte tiles have ruled our design feeds for a while now, but glazed bathroom tiles are back for 2026. Forget mirror-like shine and high gloss, though. This year’s glazed bathroom tiles are all about hand finishes with subtle variation and surface movement that responds to light and water.

“Matte tiles have dominated bathrooms for several years,” explains Grazzie of Ca’ Pietra, “because they aligned neatly with the rise of spa-like, muted interiors and a desire for calm, uniform surfaces.

“This hasn’t disappeared, but glazed tiles are being reintroduced with renewed confidence because designers are looking for ways to add warmth, depth, and visual interest without relying on busy decoration. Even quiet colors feel engaging, and deeper tones feel grounded rather than heavy.”

That’s not to say this signals the death knell for matte bathroom tiles — far from it. Simply, that hand glazed tiles fit in with the wider bathroom tile trend for imperfect surfaces.

So look out for glazed and matte tiles increasingly being used together to create contrast, warmth, and a gorgeous artisan look for your spa bathroom.

3. Intentional Stripes

If stripes and geometric tiles inched their way into our bathrooms in 2025, then 2026 is all about embracing pattern – but intentionally.

“Pattern is no longer a supporting act,” declares Joanne Sangster, senior design consultant at Ripples London. “Checkerboards, stripes, and graphic layouts are being used unapologetically on both walls and floors, injecting personality and movement and turning bathrooms into expressive, design-led spaces rather than purely functional rooms.”

The key is to use bold tile patterns to shape a space rather than simply chucking on a load of motif or geometric tiles and hoping for the best.

“We’re seeing stripes created through directional layouts rather than through tile pattern,” says Damla Turgut, founder and creative director at Otto Tiles. “Linear tiles laid vertically can exaggerate height and make small bathrooms feel more generous, while horizontal layouts help stretch narrow spaces.”

Stacked and linear mosaics used like paneling is another pattern laying trick that adds a subtle graphic look to walls.

4. Small, Theatrical Moments

Tile drenching is still big news for bathrooms. But there’s another less-is-more trend that designers are all over for 2026, and this one uses bold, characterful bathroom tiles sparingly.

“Jewel-like finishes, handmade textures and zellige-style tiles are being introduced in small, impactful moments within niches, behind basins or framed within shower recesses,” says Sophie Chapman, associate and interior designer at The Vawdrey House, “then balanced with more restrained, affordable tiles elsewhere. This approach allows bathrooms to feel luxurious and expressive without being overwhelming or costly.”

Joanne at Ripples agrees: “Many homeowners are choosing calm, neutral bathrooms and then adding one standout feature to create impact. Often, that’s a contrasting marble used to frame an architectural detail, like an arch or niche. It feels more decorative — almost like artwork — and helps turn a practical space into something special.”

5. Tonal Checkerboards

Checkerboard floors and walls are re-emerging in bathrooms for 2026, but in a much more nuanced way, say the experts.

“Checkerboard tiles are enjoying a softer revival, with gentle tonal contrasts such as gray, cream, and sand replacing stark black and white, making them feel more relaxed and design-conscious,” says Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms.

“There’s also a move toward smaller checks with a more graphic, almost retro feel,” adds Damla at Otto Tiles. “And it’s great to see people experimenting with handmade tiles to create a plaid or check.”

6. Rich, earthy palettes

Deep green, sunbaked terracotta and rich plum colored tiles are emerging as the new neutrals, say the experts. The result is warm, inviting and quietly sophisticated – bathrooms with soul and style.

“There’s a growing confidence in bolder color palettes, from deep forest greens and inky blues to clay tones and earthy reds,” says Caroline Milns, head of interior design at Zulufish.

Designers are using richer hues in two ways: as head-to-toe tile drenching for a relaxed feel. Or as accent colors to highlight alcoves, doorways and arches. And they pair effortlessly with natural materials such as timber and stone.

“It’s about designing with intention and where every tile contributes to a sense of peace,” adds Isabel Fernandez, director of Quorn Stone. “Research continues to show that natural materials and soft palettes can reduce stress and improve mood.”

7. Opulent onyx

We’re not saying goodbye to marble bathroom tiles for sure. But there’s a new stone on the block for 2026, and that’s onyx and onyx-effect porcelain tiles.

“Onyx brings a quietly luxurious edge to interiors, offering a depth and drama that creates a true statement,” says Carly Allison, head of brand and product at Fired Earth. “With its rich veining and natural translucency, we love the way that onyx interacts with light, creating a soft, almost sculptural glow. And rather than replacing classic marbles, onyx-effect tiles expand the palette, introducing ivory, green and amber tones.”

“The look is unapologetically indulgent yet refined, bringing together the ornamental and the modern in perfect balance,” adds Maria of Tile of Spain UK. “This is contemporary opulence for immersive, atmospheric interiors that exude confidence and creativity.”

Tiles are an exciting way to add so much style and personality to your bathroom, and that’s both wall and flooring trends. So if you’re starting your bathroom reno, it’s a great idea to get some samples and see what the tiles look like in your space – rather than from a photo. I’d recommend getting hold of a full-size tile, as often the free samples are just a section of the tile, and you won’t get a complete picture of the tile pattern or scale.

Seek advice too on what type of tiles work best for bathroom walls and floors — sometimes you can use the same tile, sometimes not, depending on the material. Above all else, look at the rest of your home and decide if you want your bathroom to fit in with the overall aesthetic. Or do you fancy going bold and adventurous?

So often, our understanding of what makes something a trend typically revolves around a central theme of 'newness'. Something that is in some way innovative, fresh, and distinctly different from what has come before it. The newest bathroom trend, however, is turning that understanding on its head.

Instead of searching for modernity, designers seem to be embracing tradition, looking towards features that are rooted in history. This bathroom trend is all about looking to the past, and adapting those designs for the modern day, a reflection of our growing desire for interiors that feel 'lived in.'

"Traditional styles offer a sense of timelessness, elegance, and character that many contemporary interiors can sometimes lack," explains Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms.

We want our homes to tell a story, and this isn't just limited to the living room and kitchen anymore. "In a time where homes are increasingly seen as personal sanctuaries, traditional design helps create bathrooms that feel layered, comforting, and full of character, rather than purely functional," says Louise.

So, if that sounds appealing to you, here are some of our favorite traditional features to include in your bathroom design.

1. Checkerboard Flooring

Nothing says grandeur quite like a pristine marble checkerboard-tiled floor. A trademark feature in palatial homes across Europe, this style of flooring has been in use since antiquity, with early examples found in Ancient Egyptian tombs. It rose in popularity in the Renaissance era, though, and was considered a symbol of wealth and sophistication, no doubt thanks to its ancient roots.

Nowadays, we're seeing a renewed love for this classic design, updated though, to suit our modern ideals. While our predecessors favored a stark black and white design, modern interpretations have seen a move towards softer, more subdued colorways.

"Checkerboard flooring has made a strong comeback, but with a modern twist; using softer, more muted color palettes, varied natural stones, and alternative tile sizes," comments Louise.

And it's not just the materials we're playing around with, as Louise explains, "Rather than being confined to the floor, this pattern is now appearing on walls, in shower enclosures, and even as statement vanity splashbacks."

This update on a classic maintains all of its grand, palatial appeal, while playing into our modern desire for more textured, complex materials and softer, earthy color palettes.

2. Stone Tubs

"Rather than ornate or decorative tubs, the traditional statement piece today is the classic marble bathtub, particularly sculptural designs like the Centuria freestanding marble tub by Waterworks," says interior designer Kimberly Oxford.

A step up from a regular freestanding tub, these more dramatic, sculptural designs turn your bath into the focal point of your bathroom, reminiscent of how more traditional, historic bathrooms would have been constructed.

"Referencing historic bathing traditions, these tubs feel architectural and grounding rather than ornamental," says Kimberly, and this effect is only heightened by the striking marble finish. "Carved from stone, they become the focal point of the room through material integrity and scale, not embellishment."

The benefit of using such a statement-making feature in your bathroom is that you can take a more relaxed approach with the rest of the design. As Kimberly explains, "Rich marbles feel most elevated when paired with simplified cabinetry, minimal hardware, and a restrained palette." Let the tub rise to the foreground by creating a more subdued, neutral background for it to exist within.

3. Exposed Fixtures

There are two contrasting camps when it comes to choosing your bathroom fixtures. While one side is obsessed with investing in all the newest advancements in bathroom tech, with smart toilets and AI showers becoming increasingly commonplace, the other takes the opposite approach, favoring instead more traditional, even seemingly old-fashioned fixtures.

It's a trend Louise, too, has been noticing, and is perhaps best expressed through the rising desire for exposed cisterns, "particularly in the style of classic Thomas Crapper designs," says Louise.

Keeley Sutcliffe, from BC Designs, echoes this point, saying, "One traditional bathroom feature we expect to see far more of in UK homes in 2026 is the high-level cistern with a pull-chain flush. For many years, bathrooms have prioritised concealment, with everything hidden behind panels or boxed in, but there is now a clear shift towards designs that feel more expressive and architecturally grounded."

These water tanks have, in a matter of years, transformed from an undesirable, outdated bathroom feature into something people are actively seeking to highlight in their homes.

"These are increasingly being specified in bespoke colors, allowing homeowners and interior designers to introduce personality and individuality while still referencing heritage aesthetics," says Louise.

But it's not just the toilet cisterns that are receiving this renewed attention. "Traditional taps, high-level toilets, and decorative pipework in metallic finishes such as aged brass, nickel, and unlacquered brass are also gaining popularity, adding to the sense of authenticity and craftsmanship," says Louise.

These historical features bring a sense of history to a space, looking particularly at home in period properties, where these features seamlessly blend with any existing, original architecture, too.

4. Architectural Detailing

Bringing traditional, architectural details into your bathroom is an easy way to make your space feel more considered and intentional, and it's an approach that people will be increasingly keen to adopt.

Interior designer Claire Thompson agrees, saying, "I think we are going to see more and more trim work and mouldings continue to appear in bathrooms — whether it's wood accents or tile and natural stone accents, I think we will see a big uptick in that being more of a feature."

Features like crown moulding and wall panelling bring so much depth to your space, offering a sense of history that elevates the finish of your bathroom, and keeps it from feeling like a place of pure functionality.

And this can be further emphasized through styling, Claire recommends, "artwork that is framed in vintage frames, and bringing in oushak rugs and maybe even an antique ottoman with wood accents," for an added layer of softness and warmth in your space.

5. Ornate Furniture Details

In modern bathroom design, so much of the emphasis is placed on being as sleek and minimalist as possible. This trend, however, is quite the opposite. Instead of wall-mounted vanities and built-in, slick-looking bathroom storage, we're seeing people embrace more traditional, ornate pieces of furniture within these rooms.

"We are seeing a return to furniture-style vanities, inset cabinetry, framed mirrors, unlacquered brass and polished nickel finishes, and classic architectural detailing," agrees Kimberly. These pieces bring a more homely, welcoming look to your bathrooms, moving them away from a space of pure function and into a room to be lived in.

Explaining this shift, Kimberly says, "The renewed interest in traditional design is rooted in a desire for longevity and authenticity. After years of trend-driven interiors, homeowners are craving spaces that feel grounded and enduring. Traditional bathrooms answer that desire by prioritizing craftsmanship, material honesty, and forms that have stood the test of time."

It's not just our bathrooms that are receiving the traditional treatment; these traditional kitchen features are also becoming increasingly popular, and we can see why.

Minimalism isn’t just about what you add, but what you leave out. When the goal is a bathroom that feels utterly tranquil, spa-like, and intentionally uncluttered, every element must earn its place in the overall bathroom design.

Visual noise, bulky fixtures, and unnecessary accessories can quickly undermine that sense of quiet luxury, even in the most beautifully designed minimalist bathroom. This is exactly why minimalists take such a ruthless approach to bathroom design, from overcomplicated fittings to space-hogging features that disrupt the clean sightlines; certain choices simply do not align with the pared-back, serene aesthetic.

Instead, the focus should be on what really matters — prioritizing comfort, wellness, and escapism, and if anything in your bathroom doesn’t do that, it simply goes.

1. Hard Angles and Harsh Edges

Minimalist bathrooms place a strong emphasis on form purely because geometry has a direct impact on how a space can make you feel. Hard angles and sharp edges are naturally unforgiving in a minimalist interior design, and they can leave a cold, clinical ambiance, disrupting the sense of calm and flow.

“One detail we would typically avoid in a spa-like scheme is the use of harsh edges and strongly square lines on key elements such as baths and basins," Keeley Sutcliffe, Design Manager at BC Designs, echoes. "Sharp corners and rigid profiles introduce a sense of visual tension, which can register subconsciously as clutter, even when the room is otherwise pared back. Bathrooms that feel genuinely uncluttered tend to rely on forms that support visual continuity,” she refers to softer curves and gently rounded profiles. These both allow the eye to move more easily through the space, which helps the room feel cohesive rather than segmented. This is particularly relevant where the bath and basin act as the main visual anchors, as consistency in shape helps those elements sit more comfortably within the overall design.

“What is often overlooked is how repeated square lines can fragment a space without being immediately obvious,” Keeley continues, “Hard angles create subtle visual interruptions that work against a restorative atmosphere. Curved forms reduce this effect by softening transitions and supporting a more continuous reading of the room, which is why minimalists often favour them when the aim is a bathroom that feels calm.”

2. Feature Walls

Feature walls often work against a minimalist bathroom design because they introduce visual hierarchy and contrast, both of which disrupt the calm. According to Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra, people often mistake minimalism as a ban on personality, when in actuality it is all about the way the eye moves through the space and how quickly it settles.

“The most common mistake we see when someone wants a ‘spa’ feel is reaching for a feature wall that relies on pattern to do the heavy lifting, because bold geometrics, high-contrast repeats, busy encaustic looks, or a mosaic with lots of color changes can make the wall feel like a graphic, and that breaks the room into ‘bits’ rather than letting it read as one calm envelope," Grazzie explains. "Bathrooms are typically smaller and more interrupted than other rooms, with mirrors, brassware, glazing, and towel rails already creating visual punctuation, so if the main surface is also shouting for attention, the result can feel restless even when everything is perfectly tidy.”

However, a minimalist bathroom still needs depth, so Grazzie advises that it gets there through material, scale, and restraint rather than a print effect. “If you want a wall to feel special without feeling fussy, start with a bathroom tile that has a natural variation or a softly worked surface, such as stone-effect porcelain, zellige-inspired ceramics, gentle ripples, plaster-like matt finishes, or a glaze that quietly catches light, then keep the layout simple so that texture becomes the interest.”

Large-format tiles are useful because they reduce the number of joints, which instantly makes a wall feel cleaner and therefore calmer, but Grazzie notes, “The key is keeping the palette tonal so the surface reads as one field rather than a patchwork,” this includes the ceiling too, “Similarly, if you prefer smaller formats, the spa-like route is usually a single tone laid with a minimal, consistent joint, rather than a mix of colours or a layout with lots of directional changes.”

3. Overly Decorative Shower Glass

Highly detailed, colored, or heavily framed shower glass can also introduce visual noise that disrupts the flow.

Louise Ashdown, Head of Design at West One Bathrooms, says, “Textured, tinted or digitally printed glass can quickly become a focal point when minimalism relies on quiet restraint.”

Instead, minimalists tend to favor clear or subtly frosted glass with discreet fixings for their shower room, allowing light to flow freely. The goal is a seamless and organic with the architecture of the space taking precedence.

4. Loud or Highly Saturated Color Palettes

Strong, energetic colors can bring vitality to a space, but they rarely promote stillness. “Minimalists tend to avoid highly saturated hues in favor of muted, calming tones,” explains Louise.

She suggests opting for soft grays, warm taupes, and gentle stone shades as bathroom color ideas, as these are restful palettes; easier to live with long term and allow materials and light to do the talking rather than color dominating the space.

5. Uncoordinated Hardware and Finishes

“A spa-like bathroom keeps visual interruptions to a minimum through clever storage solutions like recessed niches, mirrored cabinets, and well-designed vanity units,” says Louise. Allow those essentials to disappear from view yet stay easily accessible. With everything still at hand, you’ll soon find yourself in a rhythm of getting things in and out just as easily as before.

7. Technology Added for Novelty

Let’s talk tech. If you’re someone who loves gadgets and wants to include smart features, bear in mind that they can complicate a space.

Louise suggests where to apply this. “Minimalists prioritise technology that genuinely streamlines daily routines, such as touchless flush plates, demisting mirrors or discreet lighting controls.” When tech is chosen thoughtfully, it enhances comfort and hygiene in the bathroom and eases even more clutter.

8. Statement lighting that overwhelms the space

Large decorative lights or overly dramatic fittings can dominate a bathroom, and as a place to unwind, we dont need any overstated show of any products. “Minimalist lighting is layered but discreet, combining clean task lighting with soft ambient sources,” explains Louise. She suggests integrated LEDs, backlit mirrors and subtle low-level lighting support daily routines as well as maintaining a spa-like mood.

Creating a minimalist, spa-like bathroom is less about following strict rules and more about making intentional choices. By removing features that introduce visual noise, harsh contrasts, or unnecessary complication, you allow the space to simply breathe, and in turn, make the bathroom look expensive.

When every element is considered for how it looks, feels, and functions, the bathroom becomes so much more than just a practical place. This is when it starts to feel truly restorative, a place to slow down and reset – a moment of escapism.

Bathrooms are shifting. Our once loved photo-ready, super-slick rooms are now feeling forced, sterile, and well, a little bit untouchable. Instead, 2026 bathrooms are embracing a liveable, relaxed mood that still feels fresh in 10 years’ time.

But don’t just take my word for it, as all the designers I asked agree that highly stylized, picture-perfect spaces s are falling out of favor when it comes to bathroom trends.

“Rather than chasing trends, 2026 bathrooms focus on balance, craftsmanship, and longevity,” says Matthew Kallum, founder of Kallums Bathrooms. “The emphasis is on calm, depth, and quality — spaces that feel quietly luxurious and designed to stand the test of time.”

“Designers are stepping away from overly prescriptive, trend-led looks and towards spaces that feel personal, balanced and inherently calming,” agrees Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms. “As we move into 2026, sterile white interiors, noisy patterns, and overly coordinated, kitsch designs are firmly falling out of favor.”

So if you’re thinking about a bathroom renovation, here are five bathroom trends to avoid in 2026.

1. Plain White Bathrooms

Top-to-toe white bathrooms are a no-go for 2026, say the experts. And while minimalist, white bathrooms were once favorites for a hotel-luxury look, these schemes now look cold, clinical, and a little dated.

“All white bathrooms are often called contractor bathrooms as most new builds or renovations will have a plain, white template bathroom,” says Damla Turgut, founder and creative director at Otto Tiles & Design. “Once associated with cleanliness and luxury, they now read as flat, impersonal, and a bit clinical.”

“Overly minimal, hotel-style bathrooms are falling out of favor,” agrees Nick Cryer, founder of Berkeley Place. “Spaces that feel too sparse or impersonal no longer resonate.”

But moving away from all-white bathrooms doesn’t necessarily mean full-blown maximalism – especially if pared-back spaces are your thing. Instead, warmth is key in 2026 say the designers. Think soft sage, soothing dusky blue, blush pink, and earthy brown for a calm, relaxing bathroom that looks expensive.

“Say goodbye to stark whites and cool grays, 2026 is ushering in a new wave of neutrals,” says interior designer Susie Pfeiffer. “From gentle sages and soothing blues to blush pinks and rich, grounding browns, these tones create calm, restorative backdrops for bathrooms while still adding personality and depth.”

Try mixing materials and finishes – Zellige with cement tiles, bronze fittings alongside natural stone – and introducing timber and soft linens to add texture, warmth, and a far more luxurious aesthetic.

And you can introduce color, says Cath Beckett, co-founder of Yellow London: “Experiment with wallpaper and bold prints, as well as vibrant hues and subtle textures for a space that feels interesting, brings a sense of joy and breaks away from the idea that bathrooms should be plain or overly utilitarian.”

2. Feature Walls

Highly stylized bathrooms are out for 2026 – and that includes the feature wall.

“The idea of a single feature wall in an otherwise plain bathroom feels very outdated,” says Damla of Otto Tiles & Design. “Often it feels like a decision that’s been added late in the process rather than something that genuinely shapes the space. The result can be a bathroom that feels visually chopped up, with one area doing all the work while the rest feels unresolved.”

That’s not to say that pattern or tile drenching is banned in 2026 bathrooms, far from it. But instead of maximalism and busy prints, which can quickly feel overwhelming, designers are favoring a more balanced and long-lasting look.

“This doesn’t have to mean one bold color everywhere,” adds Damla. “Using a single tile format across the space, then working with tone, finish, or layout, creates a sense of continuity while still allowing for depth and individualization.”

“In bathrooms, too much visual noise can quickly become exhausting,” adds Charlotte Tilby, a design expert at Woodstock. “Clashing finishes, multiple patterns, and excessive décor often compete for attention, creating a sense of clutter, making the space feel busy and less functional.”

3. High Gloss Finishes

Ultra-shiny vanity units and reflective surfaces might seem perfect for modern bathrooms on the surface, but realistically, they are starting to date in the wrong application. They feel cold, impersonal, and can show up every fingerprint, say the experts.

“High-gloss lacquer cabinetry was originally adopted to create a sleek, contemporary look and to maximize light in smaller bathrooms,” says Richard Eaton, design manager at Tissino. “In practice, though, these finishes struggle to maintain their appearance over time. Glossy surfaces show fingerprints, water marks, and micro-scratches very quickly, which can undermine the sense of order and calm that a bathroom should offer.”

Instead, matt and satin finishes in timber and stone-effect materials feel calmer and more contemporary. There’s a growing trend too for mixing matt and gloss tiles and furniture for a really cool artisan look.

“Bathrooms are moving away from purely functional spaces defined by smooth, hard surfaces,” adds Caroline Milns, head of interior design at Zulufish. “Instead, we’re seeing a shift towards rooms designed for comfort and lingering, where texture plays a much more important role.”

As well as matt finish tiles and cabinetry, Caroline suggests introducing textiles and fabrics specifically designed to perform in bathroom settings, including rugs, cushions, and decorative trims made from recycled plastic.

4. Matching Bathrooms

Overly coordinated bathrooms are out for 2026, say the designers. Instead of matchy-matchy tiles and fittings, we’re ready for a more individual look that’s liveable and enduring rather than ‘Instagram-ready’.

“When tiles, fittings, and finishes are all perfectly matched, the bathroom can lack depth and personality,” says Damla of Otto Tiles & Design. “For a while, this kind of precision felt refined, but it can now feel a little over-designed and one-dimensional.”

Instead, Damla suggests mixing textures, finishes, or tones that feel natural rather than forced for a richer, character-packed bathroom.

5. Black Hardware

Matt black bathroom taps and shower fittings have been a popular look for creating a striking silhouette in the bathroom – but it’s starting to fall out of favor for 2026, say the experts.

“While matt black brassware delivers instant contrast, it simply doesn’t perform well in everyday life,” says Kerri Asker, senior designer at Ripples Winchester, “particularly in hard water areas where limescale shows up quickly and the finish can start to look tired.

“We’re steering clients towards more durable options such as brushed PVD metals in brushed nickel and brushed bronze instead. These still give that depth and contemporary edge, but it’s far more forgiving, longer lasting, and ultimately feels like a smarter investment.”

For Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs, it’s all about how metals interact with color, texture, and light, rather than treating taps and fittings as functional, neutral items.

“Brushed nickel has emerged as a more versatile response to this shift,” says Keeley. “The softer surface diffuses light rather than reflecting it aggressively, which allows it to sit comfortably alongside natural materials such as stone, plaster, and timber cabinetry.”

Bathroom trends, like interior design trends in general, are shifting towards warmer, more authentic spaces. That means passing fads and throwaway trends are out. And instead, we’re creating bathrooms and homes that feel confident, intentional and expressive of who we are and how we live – not just for today but our future selves too. The key, say the experts, is to look at design directions rather than overly prescribed trends. “Bathrooms designed around strong trends rather than longevity are starting to feel dated,” explains interior designer Sarah Ferreira.

“All-white schemes, harsh contrasts, and high-gloss finishes can feel quite clinical now, rather than restorative.” That’s not to say that bathrooms in 2026 should be neutral and safe. And in fact, bathrooms are the newest space to play around with storytelling and a sense of fun. So that means injecting a dash of red if you love the color, or tile drenching in a pretty pattern if you want a cosy, restful mood. Prioritize your space and your personality so you get a bathroom that’s creative, relaxing, and somewhere you’ll want to escape to for years to come.

The bathroom has unexpectedly become one of the most powerful value drivers in the modern home. Once treated as a purely functional space, our expectations of it are now higher than ever — we require comfort, luxury, efficiency, perhaps even a sense of our own spa-like sanctuary; and we want all of this without it feeling dated or overdesigned.

For homeowners thinking long-term, the right bathroom upgrades can do more than improve day-to-day living; they can meaningfully influence how buyers perceive the overall quality of a home, the level of care that has been taken with it, and therefore the overall value. But not every trend or high-end finish delivers a return — some features age quickly, while others have become standard expectations in today’s market.

I’ve been in touch with the experts and have broken it down into the seven key bathroom features that consistently add real value to a home; the design choices that buyers actively seek out, and realtors will happily endorse, all to make a bathroom look expensive and cared for.

1. A Separate Handheld and Overhead Shower

Subtle, but an effective boost in value — a dual shower setup where a fixed shower overhead is combined with a separate handheld option, has become less of a luxury upgrade and more of a modern must-have, these days. Why? It undoubtedly offers the flexibility needed (especially when children are involved), plus it gives you that optional extra, should you need it.

Nicola Crow, sales director at Ripples, explains, “An overhead delivers that immersive, spa-like experience, while a handheld makes everyday tasks like quick rinse-offs to cleaning the enclosure, far more practical.” The thoughtful design function translates into being ready for daily life and accommodating whoever, however, whenever.

2. Timeless Tiling

When it comes to it, bathroom tiles are often one of the first details a buyer will notice — it's also one of the quickest ways to date a space if chosen poorly. Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra, says, “Professionally installed tiling is one of the clearest indicators of whether a bathroom has been properly invested in or merely refreshed at surface level.”

This can be down to errors in spacing, alignment, or grout work. “Bathrooms that feel solid and carefully finished reassure buyers that moisture has been managed correctly. Full-height tiling that is evenly set, consistently spaced, and neatly finished at edges suggests that waterproof membranes, tanking systems, and substrates have been addressed correctly behind the scenes, reducing concerns around leaks, future repairs, or hidden damage.” For future buyers, that sense of confidence is critical. In removing uncertainty, it reinforces the impression that the room will perform well over time without requiring immediate work.

Channeling a timeless scheme for longevity requires you to prioritize classic materials, neutral palettes, and restrained patterns that will still feel fresh a few years on. Think soft stone finishes, perhaps large-format tiles to cut back on grout lines, and look at the bigger picture to create a clean and cohesive look. The bathroom should express quality, style, and durability, so steer clear of anything too colorful or personal.

3. Built-In Niches and Smart Storage

Modern bathrooms that feel calm and considered almost always share one thing, and that’s smart storage built into the layout, rather than added as an afterthought.

“With more skincare, haircare, and beauty products than ever, generous storage is essential,” says Nicola. “Recessed niches, well-planned vanity drawers, and concealed cabinetry keep surfaces clear and the space feeling calm and clutter-free.

"They’re neater, easier to clean, and create a seamless, design-led finish that feels considered rather than functional.” Bathroom storage will always be an essential feature in this space; just make sure you do it well the first time around.

4. Concealed Pipework

Concealing any gubbins — whether it be piping, wiring, or anything else — is the cleanest outcome, providing a more architectural, designed-with-intention look.

Nicola agrees that hiding the mechanics instantly elevates the overall feel of the room, and, since it’s supposed to be mainly functional anyway, it feels like a treat not to have to look at all the elements that go into making it function.

5. A Bath and Separate Shower

“A well-specified bath remains a strong positive for many buyers of family homes,” says Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs. “It supports everyday routines and broader lifestyle expectations. Families with young children typically regard a bath as highly practical for bathing children safely and comfortably.”

Seeing as this is not something a shower alone can replicate, properties without a bath can feel functionally incomplete to that part of the market. Keeley goes on to explain that, in addition, a bath offers a place for relaxation and recuperation: “This resonates with buyers who value wellness in the home environment.

From a value perspective, a property that has both a well-finished bath and a separate shower room can appeal to a broader range of buyers, including families and couples who want flexibility in bathing options.”

However, it seems a generous walk-in shower is also becoming a baseline expectation in modern homes because it combines ease of daily use with accessible design. “A shower that feels roomy allows users of differing heights and mobility to enter and move without feeling constrained, which matters not only for immediate convenience but also for future adaptability as needs evolve,” explains Richard Eaton, Design Manager at Tissino. It’s as simple as that; the more options, the better, in this case.

6. Hardware, Brassware, Fixtures and Fittings

When it comes to fixtures and fittings, Richard suggests buyers associate quality shower fittings with water performance and ease of maintenance: “Well-engineered valves and cartridges resist drips and maintain consistent temperature, which lessens the likelihood of servicing issues after purchase.”

Elegant finishes that resist corrosion and limescale aging are shown through a polished aesthetic over long periods, so the shower continues to feel fresh rather than dated. “In an everyday context, a walk-in shower with a clear glass screen and discreet drainage detailing enhances the perception of space and cleanliness, which appeals in climates where bathrooms are used multiple times a day throughout the year.”

Nicola agrees this is a place for investment, “Investing in premium finishes that resist scratching and tarnishing ensures the bathroom looks better for longer — and keeps the space feeling fresh and timeless.” This kind of thing is immediately appreciated by potential buyers. And certainly, scrimping in this area is one of the key things that will make your bathroom look cheap.

Rather than cold white spots or one central bulb, introduce a layered lighting approach to your scheme — I’m talking wall lights, pendants, backlit mirrors, and LED strips of ambient glow — these all create a feeling of warmth and considered design to the space.

“Make it more considered through low-level lighting around the W.C, warm, flattering light around the washbasin, and relaxing, dimmed light around the bath,” suggests Susan Roach, designer at West One Bathrooms.

If your buyers know these options are already wired in, they know they’ve found a home that’s been carefully designed and considered, which is much more appealing.

In actuality, the bathroom features that add the most value aren’t anything to do with chasing trends or super-indulgent finishes — they’re about thoughtful design decisions that improve how the space functions daily and is maintained at ease, while also reassuring buyers that the home has been well-planned, built, and looked after.

From clever layouts and hidden detailing to quality materials and well-thought-out lighting, these are the elements that build a genuinely desirable, durable space and can often make a small bathroom look bigger.

As much as we've championed the idea that powder rooms and bathrooms are the best place to get inventive with design, when it comes to your primary bathroom, you may be better off sticking with a more minimalist bathroom design.

As Louise Ashdown, from West One Design, says, "Bathrooms can quickly feel stressful when there’s too much visual noise or a lack of considered planning." As much as you may want to experiment with bold bathroom tiling and a bright, colorful toilet, when you bring together too many clashing design elements, the result can be overwhelming, immediately ruining any hope of a calming, spa bathroom look.

"Overly busy tiles, bold contrasts, uncoordinated finishes, and visible clutter all pull the eye in different directions, creating a space that feels visually restless rather than calm."

Instead, try to approach this design with some sense of restraint. This doesn't mean you have to abandon all those wild bathroom trends you've been dreaming of; just choose one or two elements you want to make a statement with, and allow the rest to calmly fade into the background. You want the room to feel cohesive in its design, not a wild mish-mash of different trends and styles.

"Softer, tonal finishes used across walls and floors help create a cohesive, cocooning feel, while muted color palettes allow materials and light to take the lead rather than color demanding attention," suggests Louise, "Clear or subtly frosted shower glass, coordinated hardware and streamlined fittings reduce distraction and allow the architecture of the space to breathe."

Bathroom lighting can, admittedly, be a tricky thing to get right. You want it to be warm and welcoming enough to feel relaxing, but still bright enough to be functional. The key to achieving this lies in a layered lighting scheme, as Louise suggests, "combining discreet task lighting with gentle ambient sources supports different moods throughout the day."

Although installing task lighting may feel like it's working against the goal of creating a relaxing space, without it, you'll likely find yourself growing even more frustrated with your space.

"Whether applying makeup, shaving, or just taking a good glance at yourself before heading off for the day, this element is key to a good experience to start your day off right or ending the day in your evening routine," says Deborah Silver-Fagel, founder of Manor House Interior Design. "Improper placement of lighting can cast shadows, which makes you look tired, older, or just give you that unnecessary ‘fright’ in the mirror."

If you constantly feel on edge, or just not fully relaxed in your bathroom, there's a high chance you rushed through the design process, skipping out on those little luxuries that you told yourself you didn't need.

It's safe to say that we all want our homes to look elevated and luxurious — and the bathroom is no exception. The key to achieving this comes down to being intentional with your design and not disregarding the finer elements that can cheapen the overall look of the space. According to the designers at Ripples, the difference between a bathroom that feels premium and one that falls flat often comes down to planning, proportion, and the details most people overlook.

So, whether you're planning a remodel or simply looking for ways to spruce up your current space, there are plenty of ways to make your bathroom look more expensive, without needing an unlimited budget.

According to the experts, these are the eight common design mistakes they notice that can quietly cheapen a bathroom, how to avoid making them, and what to do instead.

1. Poor Planning and Ignoring Proportions

Let’s begin with plans and proportions. A well-planned modern bathroom design considers how the room is used, how the eye moves through it, and how each element relates to the architecture. Balance is key.

“Even the most beautiful products can feel underwhelming if the layout hasn’t been properly thought through,” says Nicola Crow, sales director at Ripples. “Awkward spacing, cramped circulation, and poorly scaled furniture immediately undermine a space.”

Oversized sanitaryware in a compact space, or too many elements competing for attention, can make the design feel awkward rather than considered. It’s best to avoid things that dominate the space, as this is often what throws a design off balance.

Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms, says, “A well-planned bathroom respects the scale of the room and the style of the wider home, using carefully chosen products to maximize space without overcrowding it.”

Embracing what the space can realistically accommodate, along with any original architectural quirks, will always result in a more confident, cohesive finish, and taking the rest of the home into account allows the interior to have a sense of belonging.

2. Flat, One-Dimensional Lighting

Relying solely on ceiling spotlights is one of the quickest ways to make a bathroom feel cheap. It creates a flat, stark, clinical atmosphere that does little to enhance materials or finishes while also creating impractical shadows in uncomfortable directions.

“Ripples designers always encourage layered lighting, combining ambient light with task lighting around mirrors and softer accent lighting in niches, under vanity units or at floor level,” says Nicola. Consistency in color temperature is key; mixed warm and cool lighting can instantly make a space feel unrefined.

Let’s not forget, bathrooms are used at different times of the day and for different purposes. Layered lighting makes all the difference in creating ambience and task lighting for when it's needed. One important thing to remember is to allow for different sets of lighting to be on separate switches so you can channel the mood you need at any time.

Over the years, I’ve come to learn just how vital wall lights are in a bathroom. Not only can they add playful flair, acting almost as wall art, but they also provide the front light for anyone looking into the mirror — this should never be an afterthought. Well-thought-out lighting not only enhances the design but also creates a more relaxing, spa bathroom feel, which we all seem to be craving.

3. Cheap Brassware and Plastic Components

Starting with bathroom mirrors, a focal point in this space, Louise explains how an undersized or poorly placed mirror can disrupt the balance of a bathroom and miss an opportunity to enhance light and space.

“Mirrors should work hard within the scheme, reflecting natural and artificial light while visually opening up the room.” She recommends that integrated mirror cabinets or well-proportioned vanity mirrors provide both practicality and a cleaner look, especially when paired with hidden storage that keeps surfaces clear.

Moving on to fixtures and fittings — low-quality products may look good at first, but they rarely age well. The Ripples team explains that lightweight brassware, electric shower units, and visible plastic elements quickly show wear and can cheapen the overall look.

“Our designers are constantly advising clients to invest in solid brass or stainless-steel fittings with durable finishes," says Nicolas. "While these may cost more initially, they maintain their appearance over time and prevent issues such as tarnishing, scratching, or loosening.”

Louise agrees, suggesting that “Brassware in particular takes daily wear, and poor build quality often shows over time.” Aim for well-made fixtures with a consistent finish to create a more refined look, and you’ll find they perform better long term. “In smaller bathrooms especially, keeping finishes coordinated helps the space feel calm and intentional.” You’ll thank us in the long run for that, at least.

4. Mismatching Hardware Finishes

Let’s cut to the chase on this one — mixing finishes without a clear plan can make a bathroom feel largely disjointed rather than curated. You may think that pairing a chrome waste with brushed-brass taps, or mismatched valves and accessories, are minor details, but they have a hugely negative visual impact.

Be consistent in your finishes and carry them through every element right from the very beginning. You’ll know the finish you naturally lean towards, so stick with that to form a cohesive, polished result.

5. Poor Tile Choices and Lazy Layouts

The type of tile you choose can define the tone of a bathroom, instantly elevating and complementing your other design choices, OR immediately dating them. The direction your space leans depends on everything from installation, layout, cuts, grouting, and undulated levels.

Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra, says, “Bathrooms often look cheap not because of the tile chosen, but because of how it has been installed and detailed, which is something we see time and again. Even a beautifully designed tile will lose its impact if the layout has not been properly thought through.”

If cuts are rushed around things like sanitaryware, or if grout lines are inconsistent and visually disruptive, your space is gradually being cheapened by negligent installation. Grazzie explains how large-format tiles are a good example of this: “They can look incredibly calm and architectural when laid well, but they are also far less forgiving than smaller formats, with any lippage, uneven substrate or poor setting-out immediately visible once the space is finished.”

And with that, never underestimate your choice of grout; it plays a far bigger role than many homeowners expect. “A mismatched grout color can break up the surface unnecessarily, drawing attention to the grid rather than the tile itself,” says Grazzie, “while poor-quality grout can discolor quickly in wet areas, making a relatively new bathroom feel tired far sooner than it should.”

She explains, “This is why we always stress the importance of treating tiles as a surface rather than a product in isolation, considering how they wrap corners, meet thresholds, align with niches and sit alongside brassware, furniture and architectural lines.” Suddenly, I’m seeing tiles in a whole new light. Let’s be sure the tiles align with the interior architecture for their full potential.

Grazzie recommends investing time in preparation, substrate levelling, and thoughtful layout decisions to ensure a greater impact on how refined a bathroom feels than choosing a trend-led tile without the technical groundwork to support it.

A well-executed tile installation gives a bathroom the poise and persistence it requires to feel “designed”, whereas a rushed installation immediately undermines the entire scheme, regardless of the spending elsewhere.

When it comes to the actual tiles, Louise recommends avoiding overly busy patterns, stark contrasts, or excessive grout lines, as these can all make a bathroom feel visually restless. “Tiles are a long-term commitment," she says, "so trend-driven choices that lack warmth or tactility can date quickly.

"Larger format tiles, softer tonal palettes, and textured or natural finishes such as travertine or zellige bring depth without overwhelming the space. Using the same tile across walls and floors can also help create a more seamless, elevated feel.”

6. Visible Pipework and Dated Sanitaryware

Exposed pipework, open-back toilets, and chunky shower trays interrupt the flow of clean sightlines, drawing attention to functional elements that are better off concealed.

Louise suggests, “Where possible, concealing pipework and opting for wall-hung or streamlined designs creates a cleaner, more contemporary look.

"Even in traditional schemes, thoughtful detailing and modern engineering can ensure the bathroom feels current while still respecting a classic aesthetic.” To summarize, hiding away the not-so-pretty gubbins is an absolute must if you don't want a low-cost look.

7. Bulky Storage and Cluttered Surfaces

Bathroom storage is, of course, essential, but when it dominates visually, it detracts from the design and pulls focus into unwanted but necessary areas. For example, oversized mirror cabinets, plastic storage towers, and rusting wire baskets can make a bathroom feel heavily dated.

Instead, thoughtfully integrated storage should be a priority. Nicola explains how the designers at Ripples make it their prerogative to keep everyday items hidden so surfaces remain clear and calm.

Whether it’s a recessed niche or a well-designed vanity unit, it’s a simple change that will use the space's potential, instantly relieving it of the inevitable clutter we all accumulate.

8. Neglecting the Finishing Touches

Bathrooms can fall short of the luxury ambience when finishing touches feel disconnected from the overall design. Implementing generic accessories, mismatched materials, or purely functional choices can weaken the overall effect.

Louise recommends introducing thoughtful details, such as natural materials, tactile finishes, and subtle accents in brass or stone to add warmth and personality. “Treat the bathroom as a living space rather than a purely practical one to bring a sense of intention and longevity to the design.”

And Nicola suggests, “Poor grout color choices, visible tile trims, loose accessories, and unfinished edges all chip away at the overall effect. Ripples designers also stress the importance of ongoing care — limescale on glass, worn grout, and neglected fittings can quickly undo even the most beautiful design.”

Ultimately, you need to think long-term when purchasing products, and when it comes to color and style, always go with what you love, rather than what's currently trending.

But a cluttered space will never feel luxurious, so it's worth knowing the things that tidy bathrooms always have in them, too.

It's difficult to find something versatile enough to work, but that still feels like an interesting design choice. Designer Lauren Stephens explains, "powder pink adds immediate warmth, and in a bathroom where you’re surrounded by hard, reflective surfaces, that feeling is so welcome. The color softens the space and creates a gentle, flattering light that’s especially lovely first thing in the morning."
