The Anthropologie x Ruggable collab convinces me that there is a way to reach a stylish middle ground. I am one of the many that adorned my Christmas tree with a large bow tree topper last year, and I loved the immediate drama it brought to my festive setup — it was like the addition suddenly made my tree look like it had ‘arrived’.

As our editor, Hugh Metcalf, says in his exploration of interior design as theater, "'theatricality' is the surprising tenet for how we want our homes to perform right now." And setting the stage this Christmas with a healthy dose of bows is a good place to start.

Coco Chanel once famously quipped that "a woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls." In 2025, it seems we're translating it to the tree. The iridescent beads look so much like snow that it's made me wonder why we haven't seen this Christmas decorating idea before. Draped down our trees, across our mantels, on our front doors, it's the perfect layer of frosting that looks so expensive. And, honestly, is there anything more timeless than pearls?

But when it comes to Anthropologie and the festive holiday, you can't go past the brand's iconic Christmas houses, and this year they're cuter than ever.

Unless you've been living under a, ahem... rock, you will likely have seen the latest trend taking over social media right now: people pranking their partners into thinking they've spent hundreds of dollars on an aesthetic 'Anthropologie rock' (that's actually from their garden).

The reaction is as you'd expect. Shock. Horror. Disbelief. "But it's just a rock," they beg. One woman went as far as to convince the staff of her local Anthropologie to join in on the joke, styling a table of the 'hot new homeware' in the store. Anthropologie itself has even shared the "season’s hottest decor" across its social channels.

And while it's easy to fall into the vortex of these videos — the husbands' reactions honestly never get old — it's also not that hard to actually spend that much on a good rock. Or at least, decorative stone sculptures and objects that serve no purpose other than to please. And why not? They're pretty.

To prove my point, I've found six stone objects you can buy that would be worth making your husband mad over.

And, just because it has made me laugh (and we all need a bit more laughter in our lives), here's another video of a girl pranking her partner with an Anthropologie rock.

I can't put my finger on exactly why, but Anthropologie just seems to get Christmas so right every year. In the store's take on festive decor, it always seems to strike the perfect balance between childlike wonder and cool, design-forward ideas. Last year, it went all in on bows, and this year, its Christmas collection has already gone live, giving us fabulous pieces like beautifully ornate Christmas village houses and super luxurious-looking pearl ornaments for your tree.

Well, as if we weren't fed well enough already, the Anthro team had another ace up their sleeves — a new Christmas decor collaboration with the New York City Ballet inspired by George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Yes, there are Sugarplum Fairies, mice, and, of course, nutcrackers, but there's also some pretty yummy tableware that captures the magic of this story in a slightly more subtle way, too.

My favorite pieces from the collection? Well, everyone's going to want the snowglobe ornaments for Christmas decorating this year, which are very pretty and so detailed, but I'm also very fond of the nutcracker-shaped cocktail shaker. I can see that being a bit of a Christmas heirloom in the making.

I really am genuinely sorry for drawing your attention to Christmas decor so early in the year, but this is a needs-must situation for the greater good of Christmas village lovers alike. I actually have a dedicated cubby in my book shelves that I use each year to house my Christmas village display; all the books are removed and stored for the duration of the festive period (aside from those I use as part of my base for the village) and it brings me and my family (more me) a great deal of Christmas cheer, right in the center of our home.

You can see what I mean when we revealed how our interiors team decorates at Christmas — though, I repeat, my display is not currently stylish, which is why I’m in need of these Christmas houses from Anthropologie to add some much-needed flair to my village.

• Artificial snow — Set the scene: this Fluffy Snow from Amazon that I mentioned earlier would work well, or if you have any cotton wool, this could work just as well, and is what I have used and reused for the last several years.
• Miniature Christmas Trees — These are also a must! The Emily Taylor Christmas houses above do have two miniature trees on each house, but I personally think you need plenty more to make a proper festive scene; this 18 Piece Miniature Christmas Tree Set on Amazon, of varying colors and sizes, is perfection.
• Miniature Street Lanterns — Not technically an essential, but I do love them and have them in my own display; mine don't actually light up, but you can get this Set of 8 Lanterns on Amazon that do!

I've had my nose to a lot of candles these past few months, and while it's not out of the ordinary for me to be a bit of a connoisseur of all things scented, I've particularly been testing out lots of different candles and lots of different candle brands for Livingetc, to find out once and for all which are the best.

The byproduct of my testing? I've discovered a lot of new favorite fragrances along the way, and while reviewing a range for one brand in particular, I've found some of the best candles for autumnal scents, especially against their pretty reasonable price tag.

I'm talking about Anthropologie, which goes in for autumn home fragrance in a big way, bringing its Stateside take on 'fall' in a way that is pitched perfectly for scents that make you feel cozy. I tested a lot of the store's autumnal fragrances, but the question I get most about candles is how strong they smell (which isn't always the top criterion, but I'll answer you anyway). The winner in that regard? Anthropologie's Apothecary 18 Spice Orchard Woods is like falling headfirst into the new season — I could smell this candle, even with its lid on, even before I opened the box it arrived in.

Lidded candles are often stronger-smelling than votives without lids, especially at this more middling range of the market. The lids stop the fragrance from dissipating, and definitely give you a stronger cold throw (basically, smelling the candle unlit), and that's certainly the case for this candle. It's a bold, apple cider scent that goes into the spice of cloves and cardamom. It's not your everyday pumpkin spice autumn fragrance, but it's classic enough that it definitely recreates the feel of the season.

With its hot throw (what it smells like when it's lit), it fills the room quite quickly. It's got the sort of strength you'd expect from something like a Yankee Candle, but a little less synthetic and in a more aesthetic vessel. That's not to say this candle hasn't got a very particular look that's not, necessarily, for everyone. It's kind of that vintage, apothecary-esque meets countrycore feel that, if you like, then fantastic, but even if you don't, you still can't ignore it's a great-smelling candle.

However, if you want some alternative options that'll fit into your contemporary interior design scheme a little more comfortably and make your home smell like autumn, take a look at these other candles I tested from the range, below.

Swapping in autumnal fragrances is one of my favorite ways to reset a home for fall to get in tune with the season. But you're not limited to just candles. There are some fantastic reed diffusers, essential oil diffusers, and more out there to round out your home's scent layering.

An invite to stay at a Locke Hotel in Lisbon re-designed by Anthropologie? Don't tempt me with a good time.

Not only are Locke Hotels a personal favorite design hotel chain (I've stayed at eight different ones, and they're really good value for the level of design you're getting in your room), but the promise of that Anthropologie twist was too good to miss out on. A Locke Hotel's design is generally modern and minimalist, characterful and luxurious-feeling no doubt, but layer on top the bohemian charm of the Anthropologie brand, and you've got something quite special.

In fact, when I walked into the Locke x Anthropologie suite at Locke Santa de Joa, which is available to book from now until 30th September through Locke, I spent the first hour in my room checking out the decor. In this suite, which has a kitchen for self-catering, and a separate bedroom and living area, every space has been re-styled with a fun, contemporary take on Mediterranean style. More colorful and eclectic than Locke's standard rooms, the first thing I saw on the dining table near the entrance to the suite was a pedestal bowl adorned with ceramic shrimp (it's sold out, I'm so sorry to tell you), a glimpse of what was to come when walking through the apartment.

The walls have been re-dressed with Anthropologie's signature whimsical style of art, and pattern has been introduced through textiles, such as the bed quilt, and towels in the bathroom that eschew classic hotel whites. Pretty ceramic vases sit on the bedside dresser, while fruit-topped cannisters contain treats on the kitchen counters.

While the furniture, such as the curved boucle couch in the living room, belongs to Locke (you'll find one in each room of the hotel), it has been redressed with colorful pillows and throws to bring a new sense of style to the space.

Beyond your suite, Locke Santa de Joa has a lot to offer, especially for a hotel in a busy city like Lisbon. A small, but very stylish pool is surround by loungers and a poolside bar, while the hotel also has a handful of restaurants (I ate at the Santa Maria restaurant, helmed by acclaimed chef Nuno Mendes, and ate some of the very best food I've eaten for a long time). The lobby alone, with its small cafe serving pastel de nata and iced matcha, attracts visitors in its own right for its great design.

What are AnthroPerks?

AnthroPerks is Anthropologie's loyalty program. It offers free membership, not credit. Members get early access to the best and sometimes exclusive deals, including members-only events, new product collections, and Black Friday deals.

The membership includes a $20 welcome treat (£20 for UK shoppers) — with a minimum spend of £100, valid on full-price items — a 15% off birthday discount code, which also includes free express delivery for that purchase, and "more surprises"; online order history, and paperless returns.

Are Anthropologie Black Friday Deals Any Good?

"Anthropologie's Black Friday sale is definitely worth shopping," says LivingEtc's Ecommerce Content Director Lindsey Davis. "Discounts tend to be most generous on the website from around mid-October onwards, matched with the widest offering, building towards the official sale period at the end of November.

"In the past, I have seen discounts of at least 50% on a whole range of items, but particularly those that Anthro won't want to sell come the new season."

Does Anthropologie Have a Cyber Monday Sale?

Yes, they do! In 2025, this will fall on Monday, 1st December, with discounts of up to 50% off on hundreds of items across a number of their categories.

But unlike Black Friday (which tends to actually run across a number of days), Anthropologie's Cyber Monday sale was only one day in 2024, so discounts were exclusive, with stock running out fast. So be prepared!

Does Anthropologie Have an After-Christmas Sale?

"Anthropologie's sale period extends beyond Black Friday into and after Christmas," continues Lindsey Davis, "with particularly good discounts on seasonal decor, such as holiday decor and candles."

Are Anthropologie After Christmas Sales Better than Black Friday Sales?

"Which to shop: Anthropologie Black Friday or post-Christmas sales? The answer very much depends on what you want to buy," advises Lucy Searle, Livingetc's Ecommerce Content Director. "In fall, in the run up to Black Friday and beyond towards Christmas, there is usually a wider offering of product on sale with good discounts. Once you get post-Christmas you will still see healthy discounts, but much of what's on sale before Christmas might have gone out of stock.

"So, if you're shopping candles, anything that could be gifted, short-term collaborations or very seasonal items, such as holiday decor or cozy bedding, consider getting it before Christmas; furniture staples will no doubt still be on sale beyond Christmas, though prices might well rise and stabilize again in preparation for the next sale, so if you see what you want on sale, snap it up."

Is there an Anthropologie MLK Sale?

Anthropologie does run an MLK sale, typically offering around 40% off. In 2026, Martin Luther King Day will fall on Monday, January 19th.

"We would expect the after-Christmas sales to run into the MLK sale at Anthropologie," advises Lindsey Davis, so while you will likely get a good deal (a great time to spend Christmas money or vouchers you've been given!). It's also just as likely that the same deals will be online right now and after Christmas."

Does Anthropologie have a Presidents' Day Sale?

Yes, typically Anthropologie has a sale around Presidents' Day. In 2026, this falls on Monday, February 16th, so expect Anthro to discount prices the weekend before and for the rest of that long weekend, possibly into the following week.
