It also allows you to listen to music via your Watch, as well as access Siri and use Maps without first trying to tether it to your phone. All in all, it's just more convenient and can be a complete game-changer for those who want the freedom to walk around without their phone on them at all times. What are the disadvantages of having cellular on Apple Watch?

Looking at the downsides of adding a cellular plan to your Apple Watch, it completely comes down to cost. If you're looking at investing several $100 into a wearable, do you really want to add an extra charge on top? You should consider carefully whether you really need what GPS + Cellular could offer that GPS alone couldn't.

We will note, however, that the overall cost will depend on a few different things. If you purchase your Watch through your current mobile provider, for example, there's a chance that you could get a good deal on the extra data plan, bolting it onto an existing or renegotiated contract.

How does your choice affect the interior design?

"For example, the length of the Ocean sofa [above] by Liaigre is 94 inches, whereas the diameter of the Tudor coffee table by Holly Hunt is 48 inches."

Generally, square or rectangular coffee tables are more easily found online or at retail stores and are considered versatile, ideal for a variety of spaces, whether it's a small living room or a large one.

Pros: "Square tables have a beautiful symmetry, allowing you to style the table in four quadrants to tell a compelling design story,' says Jane. These pieces are also flexible, meaning they can be used in the bedroom, dining room or even the home office. They're small so they can be fit into tight spaces, and their shape allows them to be easily matched with other shapes of furniture. It's also easier to find matching side tables for square coffee tables as compared to round ones.

Cons: "Square coffee tables can take up more space, not allowing for an open flow through your space," says Jane. Some of these tables also have sharp edges making them dangerous if you have toddlers or senior citizens in the house. This shape is not perfectly suited to rooms with an awkward layout.

Usually, large, elegant living rooms do well with a rectangular coffee table. These look grand, and can help keep the room's clutter at bay.

Plus there are so many ways to style a rectangular coffee table. Its elongated shape complements large sofas, creating a balanced aesthetic.

Cons: "Round tables generally offer less surface space than their rectangular counterparts, which can be a drawback if you often entertain or need extensive display areas,' shares Nishtha. "In rectangular or square rooms, round tables can sometimes disrupt the spatial harmony. When looking at how Amazon's Alexa and Apple's HomeKit compare, it's hard not to come to a conclusion based simply on how ubiquitous one is over the other. The best Alexa speakers have become synonymous with the smart home, while HomeKit has languished behind with true embrace from Apple enthusiasts only.

But that crowd shouldn't be discounted, and Apple is aware that the popularity of its other products, like the iPhone, leads people to stay within the brand's product ecosystem. To use one to its full potential, it's often wise to buy more. That's where HomeKit speakers like the HomePod and HomePod mini come in. 

As an iPhone user, when testing the HomePod mini, we found that using HomeKit was a smooth experience that brought our technology together.

In our comparison of Alexa, HomeKit, and Google Assistant, we concluded that, for Apple users, including those with Apple Music subscriptions and Apple TVs, HomeKit is the best way to go. You just need to know you're being locked into a smaller product pool. HomeKit is also compatible with fewer third-party products right now (though Matter may change this).

The upside to Alexa, meanwhile, is the choice you have. As the leading smart home assistant, almost every third-party smart product will be compatible, including the best smart light bulbs, smart plugs, and more. The release of Apple's newest smart speaker has certainly put it in more direct competition with Amazon's Alexa, and it can't be denied that the tech giant is really, really great at certain things. Audio quality is superior for both its budget and premium speaker, and less compatibility has the side-effect of everything integrating in a seamless, user-friendly way.

However, as the differences between HomeKit and Alexa as smart assistants are trivial, it's really about the package they come in. Amazon simply gives the end user more choices, whether that's with its speakers or with the list of smart home products they can be used with. Smart displays are also a big bonus, and those looking to spend less than $100 will go for Alexa every time.

When it comes to the best home theater systems, pricing tends to be as little or as much as you want to spend, with quality varying wildly across the board. Want a $20 speaker that sounds a bit tinny but does the job? There are plenty of those. But there are also brands that have a stellar reputation for quality and luxury in equal measure, as long as you have the cash.

Two of the most well-known are Danish brand Bang & Olufsen and British brand Bowers & Wilkins, which have both produced iconic speakers in association with top designers and whose names have become synonymous with products for the design-savvy audiophile.

But which one is the smartest choice when you're in the market for the best surround sound system or Bluetooth speaker? We've looked at what each brand has to offer and which wins out in key areas.

Bowers & Wilkins vs. Bang & Olufsen: Bluetooth and smart speakers

Both Bowers & Wilkins and Bang & Olufsen offer a range of Bluetooth speakers, though the latter has more choices of smart speakers in its lineup. This is presented as an optional extra for many otherwise non-smart Bluetooth speakers, such as the Beosound Balance, Level, and striking Beoplay A9. Upon purchase, you have the option to include Google Assistant.

Bowers and Wilkins have the iconic Zeppelin speaker, which comes with built-in Alexa. The exception to B&Os commitment to Google is the Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 (2nd Gen), which comes with stripped-back Alexa, as well as being a portable Bluetooth speaker.

Bowers and Wilkins have two basic Bluetooth speakers - the Formation Wedge and the cheaper Formation Flex.

Directly comparing the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Wedge ($999) and the Bang & Olufsen Beosound Emerge ($799), the former beats out the latter in terms of sound quality, with a better frequency range and extra drivers. Both have AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, while B&O adds Chromecast.

Bowers & Wilkins vs Bang & Olufsen: Surround sound and home cinema

If you're looking for the best of the best TVs, then Bang & Olufsen has you covered. The brand currently has three impressive models - the Beovision Harmony (which made our list of the best 8K TVs), the Beovision Contour, and the Beovision Eclipse. All have their own built-in soundbar and cost anywhere between $7,000 and $19,000.

While Bowers & Wilkins doesn't have TVs, it has a lot to offer the home cinema more generally. Starting with the best soundbars, B&W has the Panorama 3 and the Formation Bar, the latter of which is part of the brand's larger Formation range of speakers. The two differ quite a lot in style, with the Panorama 3 opting for a more demure aesthetic.

Comparing the Formation Bar with Bang & Olufsen's Theater soundbar - one of two offerings from the brand - B&O's offering is clearly designed to integrate with the rest of the home's design, with a speaker cover, wall bracket, table stand, and additional decorative covers all included off the bat.

And, while the Beosound Stage is a sleek, flat, fabric-covered speaker that doesn't necessarily stand out, both the Panorama 3 and Formation Bar are clearly intended to be statement pieces and are both much larger than the average soundbar.

Then there is the matter of surround sound, which is a specialty of Bowers and Wilkins, with a large range of the best bookshelf speakers, subwoofers, floor-standing speakers, and built-in units to pick and choose from. The Formation range alone has the Duo bookshelf speakers, Formation Bass, and previously mentioned Formation Bar - everything you need for a sleek yet powerful surround sound system.

All of this said, Bang & Olufsen wins for aesthetics in this arena with a range of distinct, flashy floor-standing speakers that could be said to eclipse the more utilitarian design that Bowers and Wilkins have gone for. If the B&O soundbars are designed to blend in, floor-standing speakers like the Beolab 90 and Beolab 18 do the exact opposite.

Bowers & Wilkins vs Bang & Olufsen: Our verdict

Bang & Olufsen has a broader range of speakers, whether that's Bluetooth, Google-enabled devices, TVs, or home theater speakers. Though some of its offerings are stripped back and more minimalist, many are big and bold and would work well as statement pieces in a lounge or home cinema room.

Meanwhile, Bowers & Wilkins has a better reputation for sound quality, and its smaller selection of products adds to this aura of quality over quantity. While the Zeppelin and items in its Formation range have a lot of visual pizazz, the brand produces a lot of surround sound elements that seemingly prioritize sound quality over aesthetics.

Of course, both brands produce speakers that look and sound fantastic and have the price tag to match. If you want a single speaker - with or without smart home integration - we would recommend Bang & Olufsen, while Bowers & Wilkins is probably the best choice for audiophiles looking for the ultimate surround sound setup.

A big consideration when comparing Mini LED and OLED is pricing. The latter is traditionally more expensive than traditional LCD TVs, but the arrival of Mini LED across the major brands has complicated this.

While Mini LED technology is gaining attention due to investments from companies like Apple, OLED is currently the superior technology. Although OLED has drawbacks, such as the potential for burn-in, its self-lighting pixels help achieve a much better image than traditional LCD panels. Although Mini LEDs do improve upon standard LED technology, they do not offer the same overall benefits as OLED. However, OLED TVs are generally more expensive, and those seeking the best 8K TV will find a wider selection of Mini LED TVs compared to OLED.

Choosing between Samsung and Hisense for your new TV is not just a battle between brands, but nations. This is South Korea and China fighting it out to see who can offer the highest quality tech and the most affordable price.

This isn't the first time this has happened. In fact, what Chinese brand Hisense is doing to Samsung is just what Samsung did to Sony in years past. It's for this reason that it can be a sweet time to grab a deal on Hisense, which is aiming to undercut the market leaders while still offering great features.

Yet, Hisense has moved into the more premium end of the market in more recent times, and the best Samsung TVs now cover a more complete range of options. Which begs the question, which is the best brand for me?

In 2025, Hisense announced a raft of top new TV options, including the flagship A85Q OLED TV (here on AO.com), its specialist E7Q Pro gaming QLED, and its new Canvas TV, which is directly aimed at design fans and stands against Samsung's The Frame, which until now has largely dominated that part of the TV market.

So let's break down all you need to know in the big debate over these two TV brands. In this test, Samsung just eeks out a win ahead of the more budget-friendly Hisense, although based on your needs, that may vary. Don't presume spending less means sacrificing more before you pick your new ideal TV.

Design

Samsung and Hisense are now gunning for glory when it comes to the design of their television offerings. Both are famed for their wide range of TV options, with something to suit most needs and most budgets. They've also both been consistent in offering a premium design finish that's uniquely theirs.

Both now offer a selection of panel technologies, including OLED, QLED, and mini-LED. Across those are a wide range of size options from 32-inch models right up to whopping 98 inches in Samsung's case and 116 inches for Hisense.

When it comes to "design" specific models, Samsung led the charge with The Frame, which is designed to look like a picture frame. This features a super minimal bezel so you can display art or your photos using a digital frame of choice, to suit the space. You can read our review of Samsung's The Frame for more.

Samsung's Lifestyle Collection takes this further with The Serif, which comes on four legs that allow it to be moved while making a strong design statement. The Bouroullec Brothers designed this to feature a matte display for a glare-free viewing experience.

Samsung also offers The Sero, a TV designed to rotate and give you a smartphone-style portrait experience for digital viewing. And then there's also The Terrace, which is designed to be bright, glare-free, and weatherproof for outdoor viewing, even in sunlight.

Hisense has begun to compete in 2025 with the introduction of its new Canvas TV. This also offers a matte finish for a glare-free viewing experience. You can use the Art Mode to display pieces on your wall as if framed, only this way you can change when you need.

Winner: Samsung

Picture quality

Samsung and Hisense both make OLED TVs, which are the best when it comes to picture quality. You can get brighter images from QLED, but for all-round depth, speed, and range, it's tough to beat OLED.

Samsung offers one type of HDR codec. This is the tech behind how many colors the screen can display and ultimately how good that dynamic range is, leading to a smoother and more realistic finish.

Samsung uses HDR10+, which has 10-bit, topping out at just over one billion colors. Another codec, Dolby Vision, offers a 12-bit color gamut for 68 billion colors.

Most manufacturers support one codec or the other. Hisense has several TVs that support both codec formats.

Of course, these codecs are used by different streaming services too, so it might not matter which one is supported if you only have access to one type. That said, processing is important, and while some Samsung TVs might have more advanced processing, if you have better input thanks to Hisense's codec support, that will always win out on quality.

Refresh rates are also important, especially when it comes to gaming. Samsung has TVs that go as high as 240Hz, while Hisense tops out at an also impressive but lower 165Hz.

Both now use AI smarts to enhance the image quality, although with more experience in screen manufacturing and software enhancements, it's Samsung that has a better quality image in many cases. You can read a bit more about Samsung's Vision AI here.

Hisense can offer better brightness, HDR, and processing results. Yet Samsung can deliver better judder removal and reflection handling. It can come down to what it is you need from your TV. This is as close to a draw as a round can ge,t but Samsung wins thanks to some better smarts on its top-end models.

Sound quality

The slim nature of modern TVs means sound quality can only go so far. If you want a really immersive movie experience, then a sound system, with a sub-woofer, is going to be needed.

That said, Hisense is a rare brand that offers a sub built-in, plus it has some smart audio features. When it comes to value, Hisense can offer some decent audio for mid-range pricing. The Hisense U8N, seen here on Amazon for example, gets you mini-LED display quality with some impressive 2.1.2 channel audio — thanks to that built-in sub-woofer — plus Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support thanks to up-firing speakers that shoot sound around the room.

Samsung does offer some very smart sound processing to deliver a realistic audio experience. Samsung has its Object Tracking Sound (OTS) feature, which is able to simulate surround sound to make it appear like objects are moving in the room as they do on the TV. Since there are a small number of speakers and they are all in close proximity, this is limited, of course. But it does make it stand out over the Hisense competition. This round is a tough call, but thanks to that built-in sub and Dolby Atmos support, Hisense clinches it.

Price

Hisense is currently working on undercutting Samsung, but since both offer such a range of options, this is a competitive space.

Hisense definitely offers more affordable options, but that doesn't mean scrimping on quality. And this is the point. You can buy a mid-range Hisense TV and find it has features that compete with or even outdo other premium TVs from brands including Samsung.

Samsung allows you to get some really powerful premium TV features at competitive prices. Rather than paying a premium, you could go for OLED alternatives such as QLED, and thanks to Samsung's smarts, it will still offer an impressive picture quality backed by great software and smart audio immersion. And, of course, Samsung design always pays attention to detail for a quality finish.

Winner: Hisense

Ease of use

Samsung and Hisense offer their own operating systems and app based controls for their TVs.

Samsung uses a version of Tizen OS, developed itself, for a bespoke finish with apps and smartphone connectivity focused around Samsung apps and devices. This in a nicely uncluttered setup and the recently used tab makes popping back into your most accessed apps very simple. This has the Bixby voice control system which is fine for TV controls but little else.

Hisense uses its VIDAA Smart TV OS (although for the US it's Android). This is built on Linux and is designed to be easy to use while still offering a personalized expereicne. As such everything is nice and minimal yet there are still a good selection of apps. It's not as wide-spanning as Samsung in terms of options but if you want simple then it's ideal.

Winner: Samsung

Verdict

When Samsung and Hisense go up against each other, it's always going to be a close call as each offers a wide range of options with some great affordable choices and all-around attention to detail when it comes to design.

Both Samsung and Hisense offer design-specific models with Samsung's The Frame and Hisense's Canvas, making for excellent options for those seeking a TV that doubles as a digital art frame.

For screen quality, sound quality, ease of use, and pricing, both score highly. Overall, it's Hisense that gives you more bang for your buck while Samsung lays out some more premium options for those that want the very top-end. But with impressive sound support from Hisense and more codecs than most, this is a very compelling option.

Smart assistants are strictly Google Assistant territory, and you won't find Alexa built into a TCL or Hisense television right now. Both brands support compatibility for the smart assistant on various models, however, and for Apple's Siri if you already have the system at home.

Hisense vs TCL: Our verdict

• Winner: Hisense

TCL and Hisense offer great, affordable options that lack some of the buzz and style of the more well-known brands but have plenty of substance. In most cases, the pair were neck and neck in our comparisons, but if pressured to pick a winner, we would give the trophy to Hisense with its slightly lower prices.

In 2024, TCL launched a 115-inch TV, offering 37.7% more screen area than a 98-inch model. Hisense also introduced a 110-inch ultra-bright TV.

Hisense and TCL offer competitive options in the high-end TV market. Hisense focuses on providing essential features at affordable prices, excelling in contrast ratios, local dimming, and motion handling. On the other hand, TCL is known for superior color production, peak brightness, and wider viewing angles, primarily focusing on QLED technology and FALD. Both brands also offer various smart TV platforms and support for virtual assistants like Google Assistant and Siri.

If you're considering upgrading your home audio, there's a very good chance you have come across Sonos and Bose. The two brands are extremely well known in the audio market and for good reason. Bose is renowned for its superior audio quality and has a long-standing reputation as a traditional hi-fi brand, while Sonos is the master of aesthetically pleasing speakers that deliver great sound performance and a multitude of clever features.

Design

Design is subjective, but both Sonos and Bose offer contemporary speakers that will blend seamlessly into any modern home so there is a high possibility you will be thrilled with either.

Sonos has the edge on the design front in my opinion, however — with many of its soundbars and speakers featuring curved edges, matte soft-to-touch finishes, and organic shapes that help to create a more inviting space, despite the presence of tech. Its Era 300 is a fantastic piece of design in its own right, but it is also a brilliant speaker in terms of audio quality, while the Arc Ultra soundbar might be big, but its curves ensure it's not overbearing.

Bose deserves plenty of credit for its sleek and sophisticated speaker and soundbar designs too, though. The brand is more traditional in its approach, which will suit some homes and tastes better, but there are extra features like handles and loops on the Bluetooth speakers and materials like glass feature on Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar for a different look. Bose also offers more colors than Sonos for its small Bluetooth speaker in the SoundLink Flex Portable, and it is more versatile when it comes to connections too, making it the better option for those looking for a choice.

Winner: Sonos for design, Bose for connectivity

Audio Quality

As with design, audio quality is also subjective. We all have personal preferences in how we want our music and movies to sound. Bose has long been known to deliver great sound performance, but Sonos punches well above its weight in this department too.

Sonos speakers and soundbars are typically known for delivering balanced, natural, and engaging audio, and while the app has had some issues over the last year, it supports over 100 music streaming services and delivers plenty of features like Trueplay, which enables you to tune your Sonos speakers to your room very easily and within a couple of minutes.

The Sonos Arc Ultra is one of the most impressive Dolby Atmos soundbars you can buy, while the cheaper Beam (Gen 2) delivers a great virtual Dolby Atmos experience on a tighter budget. In terms of speakers, the Era 300 stands out within the Sonos range as I mentioned, offering an exceptionally immersive experience with detailed, spacious, and dynamic sound, while the smaller and cheaper Era 100 offers crisp and clear detail for its smaller size. Even the smallest and cheapest Sonos Roam 2 Bluetooth speaker packs a punch, so overall, having tested all of Sonos' speakers and soundbars, I've always been impressed by the audio quality on offer from the bottom of the range to the very top.

Bose meanwhile, is often praised for offering vibrant, punchy, and exciting sound delivery with pronounced bass and treble, as well as a wide soundstage from compact speakers and impressive dialogue clarity from soundbars. The Bose app offers multi-room capabilities, and it too has features like the ability to tune a speaker to the room's acoustics through ADAPTiQ, but the process is a little less user-friendly than Sonos. That said, there are better connectivity options in Bose speakers and soundbars, as I mentioned.

The Bose SoundLink Max offers lively, energetic sound with powerful bass, while the smaller SoundLink Flex offers a clear and detailed midrange and the Bose Portable Home Speaker delivers a warm and well-balanced sound. When it comes to soundbars, the latest Bose Smart Soundbar delivers well-defined and open sound, along with good levels of detail and drive, while the larger and more expensive Smart Ultra Soundbar has detailed, balanced, and notably wide sound performance, though it could be punchier.

Winner: Sonos for balanced and natural sound, Bose for punchier and more exciting performance

Pricing

Bose used to be considered more expensive than Sonos, but that has changed in recent years, with the two brands now almost like for like in terms of pricing. Both do sit within the premium end of the market, however, so whichever brand you pick, you are looking at spending at least £150 for a speaker and at least £200 for a soundbar.

Sonos' most expensive product is the Arc Ultra, which costs £999, while the cheapest product is the Roam 2 which costs £179. There are plenty of options in between those two products, however, with the Era 100 priced at £199, the Bluetooth Move 2 priced at £399, and the Era 300 priced at £449 on the speaker side. Meanwhile, the Ray soundbar hits the budget end of home cinema at £199 and the Beam (Gen 2) sits in the middle of Sonos' soundbar offering at £449. You can also still buy the older Arc soundbar, which competes with the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar for £719.

Bose's portfolio has a cheaper starting price than Sonos with the Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth Speaker starting at £119.95 while the most expensive equivalent product is the Smart Ultra Soundbar that costs £899.95, though Bose also has other products like an F1 Subwoofer that sits above the £1,000 mark, as well as Sub2 Powered Bass Module that costs £1,199.

As with Sonos however, there are multiple options in between, with the Bose Solo Soundbar 2 costing £179.95, the Bose TV Speaker sitting at £269.95 and the Bose Smart Soundbar costing £499.95. Speakers include the SoundLink Flex which costs £149.95, the SoundLink Revolve+ II which costs £299.95, the Portable Smart Speaker which costs £379.95 and the SoundLink Max which costs £399.95, while also offering surround speaker options.

Winner: Bose is fractionally cheaper

Soundbars

Both Bose and Sonos have four main options to choose from in their soundbar ranges. Sonos has the Ray, Beam, Arc, and Arc Ultra, while Bose has the Solo Soundbar 2, the TV Speaker, the Smart Soundbar, and the Smart Ultra Soundbar.

If you have a decent budget, the Sonos Arc Ultra is the latest option from Sonos, having launched in October 2024, and it is a phenomenal soundbar with 14 Sonos-engineered drivers and advanced technologies like Sound Motion for deeper bass within a smaller package.

The closest in terms of size to Bose is its Smart Ultra Soundbar, launched in 2023, and it is £100 cheaper than the Arc Ultra. It has upward-firing speakers, nine speakers, and TrueSpace technology for multi-directional sound. Despite being superior on the connection front however, this soundbar isn't as highly praised as the Arc Ultra in terms of performance and if you're going to spend this kind of money on a soundbar, the Arc Ultra is the one I would recommend.

If your budget is tighter, you will likely be deciding between the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and the Bose Smart Soundbar, both of which sit around the £500 mark. The Bose Smart Soundbar supports actual Dolby Atmos, while the Beam Gen 2 is designed to handle Dolby Atmos audio but it doesn't have dedicated height speakers so it uses virtualization techniques to deliver the immersive experience. Both are excellent soundbars for their price, so this decision may come down to which design you prefer.

Smart Speakers

When it comes to the speaker offerings from Bose and Sonos, the Sonos range is a little simpler to navigate. It has two portable options in the Roam 2 and Move 2, along with three wired options in the Era 100, Era 300 and Sonos Five. The latest options from Sonos are the Roam 2 and Move 2, though the Era 100 and Era 300 are newer than the Sonos Five having launched in 2023 compared to 2020 and they offer Bluetooth capabilities which the Five doesn’t.

For Bose, there's the SoundLink range that has the Micro, Flex, Max and Revolve+ II, but there is also the Bose Portable Speaker and dedicated Bose Surround Speakers and Bass Modules. The latest models for Bose are the SoundLink Max and the Smart Soundbar.

If you're after a portable Bluetooth speaker, you'll likely be looking at the Sonos Roam 2 or the Bose SoundLink Flex, both of which are great Bluetooth speakers for their small size. For a larger and more rugged Bluetooth speaker, there's the Sonos Move 2 which directly competes with the Bose SoundLink Max. Again, both are excellent Bluetooth speakers with superb performance, though neither are as portable as the smaller options from either company.

Sonos doesn't have a speaker under £150 as Bose does in the SoundLink Micro, but Bose doesn't have a speaker that can compete with the Era 300 in terms of performance. The closest to Sonos' Era 100 from Bose is the Bose SoundLink Revolve+ II in terms of price, and while the Era 100 is more impressive in terms of features and performance, the SoundLink Revolve+ II can be moved around.

Where Bose's offering does take the edge is surround speakers. Bose offers a pair of surround speakers for £350 and another pair for £550, whereas Sonos wants you to buy two Era 100 or two Era 300 speakers for this purpose and that works out more expensive. That said, both offer bundle offers with their soundbars, so make sure you check their sites for the best deals if you're looking at a whole home cinema setup.

Sonos vs Bose: Which Brand Wins?

Sonos and Bose both offer excellent products across their portfolios with contemporary designs and great sound performance across the board. Both design and audio preferences are subjective so you may have already decided on a clear winner for you from what I have told you about my experience with both brands.

I think Sonos has the edge on the design front thanks to its speakers and soundbars offering curved edges and soft-to-touch finishes that create a more inviting atmosphere, and the audio quality from all its options is excellent. On the other hand, Bose offers more connectivity options, its soundbars are more compact and contemporary, while the speakers cover a wider range of budgets and some come in more colour options than Sonos.

Sonos takes the overall win for a number of reasons, but Bose is also a great choice and especially for those who prioritise functionality over aesthetics.

Samsung's screens, with QLED, are also generally brighter and punchier than the Sony options.

As part of Samsung's Lifestyle Collection of TVs, there is also The Serif, which comes on a four-legged stand that allows it to be moved but also to make a powerful design statement. Crafted by the Bouroullec Brothers, this features a matte display for a glare-free viewing experience. Samsung also uniquely offers The Sero, a rotating TV designed to give you a smartphone-style portrait experience for digital viewing as you need. There's also The Terrace, designed to be bright, glare-free, and weatherproof for outdoor viewing, even in sunlight.

Picture quality

Both Sony and Samsung offer a range of panel types but the top-end in each case is OLED, and the price reflects that. In both cases, that means the widest range of colors, deep contrast range in the darker end, and buttery smooth frame rates. But there are limits even here.

Samsung offers one type of HDR codec support while Sony supports another. This is the tech behind how many colors the screen can display and ultimately how good that dynamic range is, leading to a smoother and more realistic finish.

Sony supports Dolby Vision, which offers a 12-bit color gamut for 68 billion colors. Samsung uses HDR10+, which has 10-bit, topping out at just over one billion colors.

While those numbers point out an obvious difference, there is also the subtlety of the processing to take into account. The way light is translated into digital messages, then decoded back into light to be displayed on the screen, is a big part of this. Since Sony has been working on that for decades, with its pioneering camera sensors, this is an area in which Sony excels. The end result is, usually, a superior picture on a Sony TV.

That said, when it comes to brightness, Samsung excels as it has developed new technology in its QLED panels, which are brighter than OLED. So if you're a sports fan who wants daytime viewing that's punchy, then one of these panels may suit you better.

Sound quality

While most TVs are so slim these days that the speakers are ultimately limited, Sony has found a workaround. Many of its premium TVs now feature a technology — Acoustic Surface Audio+ — that uses an actuator to turn the glass screen cover into a speaker. The end result is a more powerful and immersive audio experience.

Although it's worth keeping in mind that no TV can offer audio quality comparable to a dedicated sound system, as this offers sub-woofer bass and surround sound. That said, new TVs now use digital smarts to emulate all this well. Plus, for voice audio, both Sony and Samsung offer dedicated smarts to ensure the spoken word is as clear as possible.

Samsung offers its Object Tracking Sound (OTS) feature, which can simulate surround sound to make it appear like objects are moving in the room as they do on the TV. The reality is limited due to the number of speakers and their location, in the TV. That said, this is a useful feature that does set Samsung apart from a lot of the competition in terms of spatial audio immersion.

Samsung allows you to get some really powerful premium TV features at competitive prices. Rather than paying a premium for OLED you could go for QLED and thanks to Samsung smarts it will still offer an impressive picture quality backed by great software and smart audio immersion. And, of course, Samsung design always pays attention to detail for a quality finish.

Sony will cost you more but for that price you will have a better picture and enhanced audio all wrapped up in a beautifully designed package with plenty of support from Sony. So while Sony is more expensive, it does offer a lot to justify that premium price.

Both Samsung and Sony offer smart TV functionality, all controllable via the handy remote control, and plenty of smartphone app-based functionality too.

Samsung uses a version of Tizen OS, developed itself, for a bespoke finish with apps and smartphone connectivity focused around Samsung apps and devices. This in a nicely uncluttered setup, and the recently used tab makes popping back into your most accessed apps very simple. This has the Bixby voice control system, which is fine for TV controls but little else.

Sony uses Android TV OS, meaning it can be more cluttered, but as a result you have far more at your disposal. There is a huge selection of apps, in the UK this includes YouView overlaid for catch-up TV over your WiFi. Plus, this uses Google Assistant for powerful voice controls over third-party things like your speakers, doorbell, camera, and more.

In the battle between two of the biggest names in the world of TVs both Sony and Samsung offer a lot and definitely sit at the top end of what's out there. For the widest range of options in terms of screen type, design options, and price range, Samsung stands out as offering the most.

However, for pure quality when it comes to picture and audio — as well as ease of use with comprehensive smart apps — it's Sony that wins out. Although you will pay a premium for that top-end premium quality.
