I'm slightly in awe of people who buy large furniture online without seeing it in person first. My years working in the interiors industry have taught me that a sofa isn't just about how it looks, or whether it fits your space (although those things obviously matter); it's also about comfort. What's it like to sit on? What does the fabric feel like to touch? These are questions you really need answered before committing.

Soho Home has a reputation for curating statement pieces, and Soho Home's sofas are no exception. The designs tend to be inspired by its different 'houses,' all of which are unique, but the look is generally contemporary mixed with timeless design. It's the Soho Home 'Membership Club' aesthetic.

There are some fabulous large-scale sofas — the kind you might imagine in an architect-designed dream home — alongside more practically sized designs, and a few suited to compact spaces, too. That sense of individual character is heightened by the fact that different designs come from different makers. Most are crafted here in the UK, though some are made abroad.

I'll hold my hand up: some of the most comfortable and best sofas I've ever lounged on have been at various Soho House establishments — long, socially fuelled days and evenings sprawled across the furniture at Dean Street Townhouse, Shoreditch House, or Soho Farmhouse.

It's a great business model. People see them in the Soho Houses, then buy a similar version from Soho Home. The slight issue is that Soho Home only really has two stores where you can see these sofas in person, and they're both in central London — Sloane Square and Westbourne Grove. So when Livingetc asked me to review the range, I saw the chance to finally log all that lounging as research, and headed straight into the store for a proper game of musical chairs.

I've aimed to cover a genuine cross-section of sizes, shapes, styles, and materials, and called each one as I found it — comfort is personal, after all. These ratings are entirely my own — call it hands-on, seat-of-the-pants research. The good news? There are some real standouts. So which are the best Soho Home sofas? The ones worthy of the investment? Here's what I think.

Edison Corner Modular Sofa

Wrapped in Chocolate Velvet upholstery, the Edison Modular sofa I spotted on the store floor immediately stood out. Not just because of its huge scale, but also for its alluringly cool mid-century, rounded design aesthetic. I even like it in brown; it feels aptly early 1970s and the color suits the shape, right?

That said, it wasn't until I sat down on it that I realized just how much I liked this Soho Home sofa. Those round, bolster-shaped seat cushions that form the front, seat, and back supports are very comfortable. Admittedly, the Edison sofa has a slightly lower seating position that some people might find a bit of a struggle to get in and out of, but it's a real vibe once you're on it.

There are different variations available (the joy of modular), including a four-seater and L-shape. You can essentially create your own layout by purchasing the different individual sections. And while it's only available in the Velvet, there are 11 shades to choose from in this sofa material. Also, this velvet has a 40,000 rub count (confirmed by the Martindale rub count test) and a non-directional pile, which means you can rub or brush it either way without it changing tone.

I particularly enjoy the tufting on the seats and the backrest, and the extremely comfortable feather-filled cushions. The combination makes this a particularly dreamy option, and one which you could definitely sleep on for sure.

Ashford Sofa

Refined is probably the best word to describe Soho Home's Ashford sofa. It carries some serious 'classic' appeal with its elegant square shape, low-level slimline arms, and triple-foot detail. Of the various sofas I tried, I think it's probably got the widest style appeal. Whether sitting against a more traditional or contemporary architectural backdrop, the Ashford would look good anywhere. It's also a very reasonable scale, so it would probably fit, too!

Billed as a three-seater, and with a beech and engineered hardwood frame, I'd say it's really a comfortable two-seater. I tried to imagine how roomy it would feel with three people sitting on it, and, even though I'm pretty slim, I decided it might just lose its appealing 'sit back and sprawl' appeal.

The sofa I sat on in the store was upholstered in Linen Bisque. It looks divine in this fabric, don't get me wrong, but even though Soho Home suggests the linen has a 'durable 20,000 rub count' and that it's 'ideal for busier homes', I couldn't help but question it.

If that's you, instead of a beautiful but vulnerable pale shade, it might be wise to look at the slightly darker shades of the house Linen, house Velvet fabric, or the charming 'Ikat Stripe' fabric options. If you're imagining this in even a reasonably high-traffic living space — or more if it's for a family home or one with pets — then you might thank yourself later. Thankfully, there are lots of alternative options to choose from.

Additionally, the Ashford seat cushion depth is wonderful, but not as soft as you might expect. If you throw yourself down on it (like I did), anticipate the landing to be a little firmer than those plump cushions might lead you to believe.

Belmont Sofa

There's a reason why I found the Belmont sofa sitting pretty in Soho Home's grand foyer — it's a show-stopping design. In fact, it's more akin to a piece of crafted sculpture. It feels substantial, much like true investment furniture should.

Made with a combination of foam, feather, down, and fiber, and with a beautiful oak frame, the Belmont is available in either Linen or Velvet upholstery and in the brand's spectrum of colors. The design details of the Belmont add little moments of discovery, from the linen panels which are inset into the back of the frame to the tufted backrest cushions and the ribbed solid oak arms. These are the elements that give this particular design its unique sense of crafted character. It's also simply just a wonderful shape.

I sat on the linen-upholstered style on show in the Sloane Square store, and it rated on the firmer side. Whilst the velvet upholstery option might offer a 40,000 rub count and suggests it could withstand a 'busier home', I'm not sure it's necessarily a child or pet-friendly sofa.

Also, the wooden frame looks lovely but it does make it a little bit vulnerable to knocks and chips (the one I tried in-store already had a couple of nicks on the frame), so it's maybe best considered as a beautiful option fit for a slightly more formal or 'best' living room scene — and ideally one where you can position it so people can appreciate the detail on the back of it.

Theodore Sofa

What a pleasant surprise. The Theodore sofa is a petite two-seater and a great option for anyone who might be tight for space. At first glance, I judged the little Theodore wrong. The elegant wooden frame looks lovely — resplendent as it is in tapered birchwood with brass-effect finishing details — but it does not give me any comfort cues. However, once I sat down, I realized that it's actually very comfortable. The secret might be in those feather-wrapped cushion pads alone — they're beautifully pillowy!

The Theodore takes its style inspiration from the seating designs found at 40 Greek Street, and whilst I'm not normally a fan of a spindly wooden frame on seats (and I doubt you'd be lying down on this one), I think it's worthy of serious consideration.

This Soho Home sofa would be a great option for anyone looking for a practical or occasional petite pew. Also, there are single armchair, footstool, and daybed versions in the Theodore range, too, so you can mix and match a few pieces if that’s your preference.

Vivienne Modular Sofa

If you don't necessarily have the space for one of the larger lounge-y Soho Home sofas, then the Vivienne is a practical-sized option to consider instead. It offers the same modularity and similar comfort, but at a slightly more practical scale.

Inspired by the 8th floor of the brand's White City House location, the Vivienne sofa features rounded corners, cylindrical legs, and an eye-catching pleat-stitched wraparound back. Significantly, it’s got that 'low lounge' seating position so it feels very comfortable to sit down on, and, as a result, I imagine it rates highly on the 'napping' scale, too.

Available in Bouclé, Linen, or Velvet fabrics, there's also a series of different furniture pieces available in the Vivienne Collection — including an armchair, ottoman, and bench — so, much like the Theodore, you can even pair a couple of pieces together for a coherent living room look.

Are Soho Home Sofas Good Quality?

The short answer is yes, they are. Considering everything (comfort, quality, price, warranty), I would suggest Soho Home sofas offer acceptable value for money. The different upholstery materials on offer have varying rub counts, so make sure you study these details and consider this when specifying your preferred upholstery fabric.

Will Soho Home Remove My Old Sofa?

No, it will not. However, they do work closely with the British Heart Foundation, and as a result, Soho Home has details of the collection service that the British Heart Foundation offers. Pay attention to the details, though, which include the requirements that your old sofa be in good condition, clean, and that there be no missing parts. They advise that individually upholstered items must come with a fire label, and that each item in a sofa set should have its own fire label.

I think this list offers a fair and diverse cross-section of the current Soho Home sofas; whether you're looking for a nifty little two-seater (Theodore) or something sized up and altogether more sprawling (Edison Modular Corner), there should be something to suit most requirements and style tastes.

The in-store experience is also lovely. Whilst I was there, I was approached by two different members of the team to ask if I needed any help. It didn't feel pushy in any way. In fact, the second time I was approached, the lady asked if I'd like to sit down so she could explain more about each of the different sofa styles. If my experience is anything to go by, then this admired brand demonstrates good customer service.

When shopping for garden furniture, I'd forgive you if you accidentally overlooked IKEA's outdoor sofa offering at first. Admittedly, it's not the first place I'd think to go either, but after spending an afternoon sitting on every style I could find in their showroom, I've got to admit: I'm pretty impressed.

Not only are IKEA's outdoor sofas available at the brand's famously affordable prices, but some models have some serious Scandi style, too. Options might not be as plentiful as other garden furniture brands, but depending on how you want to look at it, sometimes less choice can be a blessing.

As for which of IKEA's outdoor sofas to choose, I have become quite astute at picking a quality design over the last few years, and, as part of researching for this article, I spent an afternoon running — okay, there was a lot of lounging involved, too — around my local IKEA, testing every outdoor sofa I could sit on.

Three IKEA outdoor sofas really tickled my fancy, but when I looked online afterwards, I discovered two more that hadn't been on the showroom floor that day, but I really wished had been (so they get an honorable mention). So, without further ado, these are the only IKEA outdoor sofas you really need to know about.

NÄMMARÖ

Those who know know that as far as IKEA outdoor sofas go, the NÄMMARÖ series is a fan favorite. In fact, it's regularly completely sold out in the UK as a result. So, of course, I had to give it a try for myself.

To start, a disclaimer: I did not sit on the 2-seat NÄMMARÖ. I sat on what was essentially a sectional version, built out with the two-seaters and other NÄMMARÖ series components. Overall, though, it was basically the same product, and its modularity is one of the things people love most about this IKEA outdoor sofa.

As for my thoughts, this is quite a chic sofa. The seat is super firm (which shouldn't be too shocking; the frame is wood), and comfortably deep. The cream-colored cushions might be best suited for a covered patio, as I would imagine they get dirty quite easily, but they are also removable and washable, which is good.

But don't just take it from me. This IKEA outdoor sofa is rated 4.7/5-stars after 64 reviews, with one customer writing: "The long wait for it all to be back in stock was totally worth it. It's super comfortable and looks great in my garden. Some reviewers mention that the cushions slip. I haven't found this at all, as the seat cushions are anchored to the frame with elastic fixings. The DUVHOLMEN cushions with cream FROSON covers are very comfortable, and my dogs' muddy paw prints wipe off easily with a damp cloth. My only regret is that I didn't get one years ago!"

TEGELÖN

The TEGELÖN is not your average IKEA outdoor sofa. It's pretty minimal, as you can tell from my photo above, and comes as part of a conversation set, which is complete with two chairs and a coffee table. Despite appearances, I thought this was comfier than anticipated.

Is it the same feel as sitting on a couch with cushions? Not at all. But it's a good option for a front porch set-up, and would require a lot less care than something with true seats. I like that it's black, as well, which is yet another safeguard against stains and marks. And it's currently on sale.

Looking at reviews, one customer identified a bit of an annoying point: it's currently only available to purchase as a complete set rather than individual pieces, which could be restricting depending on the size of your garden — but that's what Facebook Marketplace is for, right?

VITTSKÄR

The VITTSKÄR is probably the most traditional of these three IKEA outdoor sofas. It has very plush cushions and a very deep sit, with a plastic/rattan frame. Due to its size, I'd say it's better for backyards and patios than a small balcony.

And while the plastic isn't quite as nice as the Acacia wood on the NÄMMARÖ, it's definitely easy to care for and quite durable. You should have no problems with this sitting on an uncovered patio (white cushions aside).

Also, I liked that the chaise is movable, so you can turn whichever side you like into the sectional or even treat the ottoman as a 'coffee' table. Alternatively, there is a matching coffee table, too.

While it currently only has one review online, it's remarkably positive. "This IKEA outdoor sofa has ample space for extra cushions along the back and is very comfortable to lie out on," it reads. "I love that I can replace any cushions or parts in the future if need be, as it is totally modular and you can even just buy a new cushion insert. The fabric is smooth and very easy to clean."

The review does note one drawback, though. "The seat cushion toggles have nothing to attach to, so I just linked them to each other at the back of the cushions. I ended up buying another backrest and back cushion for the ottoman part, as otherwise the end cushion would just slide around, and the zipper is visible on three sides."

Honorable Mentions

I did not get to try these options in-store, but I did look into them online. And they're on this list as much for positive customer reviews as they are for style.

Buying a sofa is — in a word — hard. And expensive. And frustrating, and painful, and exhausting, too. I guess maybe you can't distill the sofa-buying process down to just one word, because it really is just too big a deal. Because if you want a couch that's really going to last, you can't take any shortcuts.

If there were a shortcut, though, I am confident it would have something to do with IKEA's sofas. Because of its reputation and its furniture acumen, you can generally shop with the understanding that you'll find something of decent quality. But there is also so much product to sort through, and in this case, that might mean finding the best sofa for you feels like finding a needle in a haystack.

Well, dear reader, that's where I can help. A few weeks ago, I spent an afternoon at my local store, where I did nothing but sit on every single IKEA sofa available in the showroom (okay fine, I ate some meatballs, too). I sat up, sat down, rolled around, touched, felt, plopped, plumped ... I did everything you would need to do to get a decent feel for a sofa before purchasing, then compiled my testing in the shortlist below.

Now, you can shop a pre-selected shortlist of sofas that not only impressed me during my visit but also come with a first-person review you can trust. Below, you'll find my five fave IKEA sofas (though take a look at my separate guide to IKEA sleeper sofas if you're looking for a sofa bed) as well as some honorable mentions, which are good choices, stylistically, but may come with more caveats than their predecessors.

JÄTTEBO

This was, by far, my favorite IKEA sofa. From my experience, I would certainly recommend it. It is so incredibly chic — the low profile, the corduroy fabric, the green color — and very on trend. Plus, IKEA's JÄTTEBO sofa also conceals hidden storage beneath (yes, you read that right).

I quite like that it is modular, as well, which means you can reconfigure the layout as your life changes, grows and expands. The sit itself is medium — it was softer than I thought but not uber-plush, either.

I also touched and felt a few of the different upholsteries available and can confidently say they are all chic and of high quality. The soft brown was definitely my favorite (included in the gallery above), but the white and blue bouclés were also nice for something a bit more tactile.

STOCKHOLM 2025

As for my second favorite IKEA sofa, I would have to say the STOCKHOLM 3-seater took the cake. The look and style of this piece is a 10/10, and it's not something that seems like it came from IKEA; the visible wooden frame, for instance, elevates it instantly.

It's also much bigger than you'd expect, in part because of the deep seat and pocket-spring core, and the sit is extremely plush — probably an eight out of 10, with 10 being the most plush possible. (So if you have back problems, maybe not the one for you.)

The cotton-linen blend fabric feels pretty durable and would be nice to curl up on, but I do wish that the fill felt a touch more substantive or high-quality. It's also worth noting that the cover is washable and comes with a 25-year guarantee.

UPPÅKRA

If you're looking to buy a main living room sofa for a family, the UPPÅKRA is probably the one for you. It's a very big couch, with an extremely deep seat depth and a chaise that could fit two adults or three to four kids.

Now, at least in my showroom, the cushions on the display UPPÅKRA seemed a tad too big for the frame, but I'm not sure if that was just wear and tear on the showroom model or a hallmark of the product. Still, though, the sit is really nice, and the overall product makes for a quality family couch, not least of all because the style is top-notch.

It comes in six different colored, washable fabrics, and you can also choose between wood or chrome-plated legs, depending on the look you're going for. As someone who cares a lot about style, I appreciate the options.

KIVIK

The KIVIK is a solid buy when it comes to IKEA sofas. I have linked a three-seater here, but I tried a sectional in the store. I quite liked the chaise; it was pretty wide and could easily serve as a place for a guest to sleep.

Regarding plushness, I'd give this a 7/10. It didn't feel like a luxury sofa to me, but it felt good for what it was. In other words, if you bought this couch online and sight unseen, you wouldn't be unhappy when it arrived.

The other thing I would note: the armrests are sofa height, so if you like to lean your head on your hand while you, say, read a book, you'd be leaning over pretty far. That said, one online review notes: "To someone who has back problems, I find this sofa very comfortable. It’s on the firm side (which is perfect for me) and doesn’t eat you when you sit down."

It also comes in eight different fabric colors. Plus, top tip: the matching Kivik footstool has hidden storage space.

FINNALA

The FINNALA is another solid IKEA sofa. Good for the price, nice fabric, stylish silhouette. I'd say that the sit leans plush (6/10), but not overly so, and that the seat itself is deep.

Personally, I wish this had a bench cushion instead of three individual seats — I just think that's a classier look — but it's also true that three separate cushions make for easier cleaning and replacement. So, there's a silver lining there. I'd just keep an eye on this fabric if you have pets, as I'm not sure that it would be a good sofa for animals.

I'm also sorry to UK readers, but this IKEA sofa seems to only be available in the US right now. It's also currently on clearance, so it may be on its way out. If you like the look, I'd move quickly.

Honorable Mentions

The IKEA sofas that are still worth mentioning — and could still work great for you! — but didn't crack my top five after my afternoon spent in-store.

SALTMYRAN

I don't think the look and sit of IKEA's SALTMYRAN 2-Seat/loveseat rises to the level of main sofa (you just cannot lounge the way you want on this), but it's a shocker for the price and also surprisingly comfortable. It has a medium firmness with a compact, minimalist design. Consider for an office, guest room, or dorm.

SALTSJÖBADEN

The SALTSJÖBADEN is pretty firm, but the deep seat kind of makes up for that (i.e. you don't feel like you're chilling with a railroad-straight spine). The fabric covers are washable, and would probably stand up nicely against kids and pets. In fact, the IKEA I visited had this in a nursery-themed showroom, and I quite liked that placement.

If you'd like to use the 2-seater as a main couch, I would also recommend buying the matching footstool to go with it; I tried it out and liked having that flexibility. But the SALTSJÖBADEN series also has three-seat and sectional options, too, so you're covered if you want something bigger, too.

MORABO

The MORABO would be higher on this list of IKEA sofas if it were available in both the U.S. and the U.K. — as of this writing, it is only available in the U.S. Sigh. This green colorway is fabulous, in my opinion; in store, I sat on a black leather MORABO, which, although the quality did surprise me (it has a nice deep seat and a medium-plush sit), wasn't my favorite stylistically. If you can capitalize on this natural green look, do it. Best of all, you can honestly bring this into your scheme as something of a neutral.

Anecdotally speaking, I would say that the FRIHETEN sleeper sofa is one of, if not the, best-selling sofas at IKEA. You can't seem to go on any trip or crash at any friend's house without running into one. And for good reason!

I have had many a sound night's sleep on a FRIHETEN, then gotten up and lounged on it all day. Don't get me wrong — it's not what I'd want as the main couch in my living room. But it's an affordable, versatile piece that makes hosting overnight guests a breeze. You can see the appeal!

What is the best-looking IKEA sofa? 

In my opinion, the best-looking IKEA sofa is easily the JÄTTEBO. Truthfully, it blew me away. I felt like I was looking at and sitting on something much more expensive, from a higher-end brand. The other fabric options are just as chic as the olive green I tried, too. I don't think you can go wrong with this sofa, especially because it's genuinely comfortable, too. Perhaps on the more expensive side for this retailer, but worth the money, no doubt.

There are many soundbars that offer little consideration for how their long black box designs will blend into your home. Don’t tar them all with them all with the same brush, though, as there are others that understand looks are important too.

Design is, of course, subjective, but of the mainstream soundbar brands, Sonos leads the pack with its Arc Ultra, Arc and Beam (Gen 2) featuring clean, curved lines and a choice of matte black or white finishes to suit various interiors.

Bose's soundbars also offer sleek designs and while they are more angular than Sonos and its softer approach, you will find features like a glass top on its flagship Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, marking a point of differentiation in this space.

Meanwhile, Sennheiser's Ambeo soundbars – especially the Mini and Plus – have refined and understated designs that feature high-quality materials, while brands like Devialet and its Dione soundbar offer a unique, more sculptural design that makes a statement whilst enhancing TV audio.

How to Style a Soundbar in Your Living Room

It's important to know how you will house your TV and soundbar from the offset, so you can prep with specific tools and call in specialist help to hide all the wiring if needed, for example. Once the basics are in place it should make pulling your decor scheme together that much easier.

You largely have three options — mounting a soundbar on the wall, attaching it to the TV itself, or positioning it on a media unit underneath the TV. Position matters for soundbars in terms of an even listening experience, so while you're limited to where it can go, you can still, largely, decorate around it as you like.

Why not make space for your soundbar in your TV wall, especially if you're looking at fancy built-ins to house your TV? "A major trend we have seen in interiors in recent years is for a feature wall of joinery, incorporating either a fireplace, TV, soundbar, or both," says Caroline Milns, interior designer at Zulufish. "Suited to more contemporary schemes, these feature walls work equally well in basement cinema rooms, luxurious living rooms, and open-plan kitchen areas. A media wall keeps your living room looking clean, neat, and modern."

"When mounting a soundbar to the wall, you'll want to think about hiding those distracting cables that run from the speaker to the TV and outlet," continues Milns. "Hiding them on the wall can be accomplished with a cable channel or an in-wall power unit specifically designed for soundbars. It has a separate power module for the TV and soundbar, so you can hide all the power and AV cables behind the wall."

Be wary of boxing in soundbars in recesses, however, as soundbars can fire sound sideways. If you have it too close to a wall at the side, it'll feel like you're listening to someone talk with their hand over their mouth.

You also don't have to feel like you need to hide a soundbar, if you invest in a design that you actually like the style of. In this room, the soundbar has even been highlighted with built-in lighting. "The cabinetry for this project pictured above was tailor-made to maximize storage and fit underneath a staircase bulkhead," says Rob Lessmann, founder of luxury interior design studio Design’d Living. What Are the Best Soundbar Brands?

There are several key brands within the soundbar space, though the best option for you will depend on a number of factors, including whether you would choose design over sound performance, the setup you may already have at home such as other speakers or a particular brand of TV, as well as what you are looking for in terms of experience.

Sonos

Sonos is best known for its user-friendly multi-room audio system. Its soundbars deliver exceptional sound quality, especially at the higher end, and integrate seamlessly with other Sonos speakers like the Era 100 and Era 300, both of which can be used as surrounds for a scalable home cinema experience should you wish to expand your sound experience.

There are four soundbars within Sonos' portfolio, spanning a breadth of price points. The Sonos Ray is designed for smaller TVs and gaming setups and offers a more budget-friendly price point, while the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is positioned in the middle and the Sonos Arc and the Sonos Arc Ultra sit at the more premium end. The Arc Ultra is the most recent soundbar from Sonos and it features dedicated up-firing speakers that help deliver a great Dolby Atmos experience, along with Bluetooth connectivity and Alexa built in.

All Sonos soundbars are compatible with other Sonos speakers for a multi-room setup should you want it, and all play nicely with a multitude of streaming services through the Sonos app, allowing you to play music or podcasts when you're not using the soundbar for TV audio. They also all offer a feature called Trueplay that will allow you to tune them to your room within a couple of minutes using the Sonos app and your phone.

In terms of compatibility, the Sonos Ray connects to a TV or computer via optical only, while the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), Sonos Arc and Sonos Arc Ultra support optical, HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. All come in black or white colour options and all can be wall-hung or positioned under your TV.

Samsung

Samsung doesn't just offer some of the best TVs on the market, it also has a broad range of soundbars, from entry-level options to high-end, multi-channel systems. Samsung's soundbars are often offered as packages with a subwoofer, or a subwoofer and rear surround speakers for a more comprehensive surround sound experience.

Many of Samsung's latest soundbars feature the company's Q-Symphony technology, which allows them to work in tandem with the built-in speakers of compatible Samsung TVs, and it's superb in action. They also offer a feature called SpaceFit Sound that uses built-in microphones to automatically tailor surround sound and voice clarity to your room.

The naming structure of Samsung's soundbars is more complicated than Sonos, but in a nutshell, if you see "F" at the end of a model number, that indicates the latest 2025 options. The Q-Series models sit at the premium end of Samsung's offering, delivering 3D surround sound for a more immersive experience. The Ultra Slim soundbar offers decent sound in a slimmer profile, while the S-Series is positioned in the middle of the portfolio and features a softer, curved design language. The B&C Series, meanwhile, are where you'll find the more budget-friendly options.

As you might expect, Samsung soundbars offer excellent synergy with Samsung TVs and they all offer good general compatibility via optical, HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.

Sony

Comparing Samsung vs Sony, both have a huge range of soundbars, with high-end models at premium price points, through to excellent budget soundbars. All of Sony's soundbars offer seamless integration with the company's Bravia TVs, with features like Acoustic Center Sync working in a similar way to Samsung's Q-Symphony, but for Sony TVs, integrating the Sony soundbar with the TV's built-in speaker for a better overall experience.

Sony offers bundles with wireless subwoofers or wireless subs and rear channels, but you can also buy single soundbars and surrounds or subs separately if you want to upgrade a system afterwards. Its premium soundbars offer features like 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, which uses phantom speakers to create a sense of immersion, while Voice Zoom 3 is an effective dialogue enhancement system to deliver clear voices.

The names of Sony's soundbars are once again more complicated than Sonos, but slightly less confusing than Samsung. Sitting at the premium end of Sony's soundbars is the Bravia Theatre Bar 9, with the Theatre Bar 8 sitting just below and the Theatre Bar 6 positioned in the middle. There are also options like the HT-SF150 that is a great budget option, and the HT-S2000 that is a little more expensive but a great Dolby Atmos soundbar for the money.

All of Sony's soundbars offer strong integration with Sony's Bravia TVs, as well as good compatibility with other TV brands, connecting via optical, HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.

Bose

Bose has a focused range of soundbars, all of which are known for offering clear, balanced sound within sleek and modern designs. When comparing Bose vs Sonos and the Sonos ecosystem, Bose's soundbars integrate seamlessly with Bose speakers, allowing for multi-room audio and easy expansion with optional wireless subwoofers and surround speakers.

You'll find features like AI Dialogue Mode on Bose's premium soundbars, which balances voice and surround sound for great vocal clarity, while TrueSpace technology up-mixes non-Atmos content for a more immersive experience, whatever you're watching. Some Bose soundbars also have a Personal Surround Sound feature that allows compatible Bose earbuds to act as private rear speakers.

Bose soundbar names are generally straightforward like Sonos'. The Bose Solo Soundbar 2 and TV Speaker are the most budget-friendly, followed by the Bose Smart Soundbar that sits in the mid-range and offers smart features and Atmos. At the top of the Bose soundbar lineup is the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, which features more refined spatial audio and a more robust sound.

All Bose soundbars generally offer good compatibility with various TV brands, connecting primarily via HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC, or Optical, and all feature Bluetooth for easy music streaming. Its Wi-Fi-enabled smart soundbars also support Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and built-in Chromecast.

Sennheiser

Sennheiser's soundbar lineup is very much focused on offering superb sound quality. The Ambeo virtualization technology allows Sennheiser's soundbars to map a room's acoustics and virtually recreate a multi-speaker home cinema system, delivering excellent 3D audio from a single bar solution. Its soundbars are known for excelling in both movie immersion and high-fidelity music playback, so whichever one you choose, you’re unlikely to be disappointed.

The Ambeo soundbar range includes features like comprehensive room calibration, automatically adjusting sound to your environment, as well as the up-mixing technology that can transform stereo or 5.1 content into a room-filling experience. The soundbars also have integrated Wi-Fi for seamless streaming via Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, and built-in Chromecast, alongside Bluetooth, making it easy to listen to what you want when you're not watching TV.

Sennheiser's soundbars are clearly named within its Ambeo family, keeping things simple. The Ambeo Soundbar Max is the largest and most powerful, as well as the most expensive, followed by the mid-sized and mid-range Ambeo Soundbar Plus. The Ambeo Soundbar Mini is the cheapest and most compact.

Connectivity includes HDMI 2.1 eARC on all three models, with a couple of the models also offering additional HDMI inputs.

What Are the Best Soundbars on a Budget?

If your budget is under £200 for a soundbar, you'll still get a significant upgrade over your TV's built-in speakers in terms of clarity and volume for this money. Sonos, Samsung, Sony and Bose all offer budget models, but you could also consider JBL, TCL and Hisense.

In most cases, you'll find Bluetooth connectivity so you can use the soundbar to play music or podcasts too, and support for virtual surround sound will also be on board some models. Don't expect smart assistants like Alexa at this price range, or up-firing speakers for true overhead effects, but you can expect decent sound quality and some clever features like tuning the soundbar to your room easily.

What's the Best 'Step-Up' Soundbar?

If you're happy to pay a little more to upgrade your TV's audio, the mid-range market for soundbars is full of fantastic options with prices falling anywhere between £300 to £800, depending on the brand and model you choose.

You'll find yourself with considerably better and more refined audio performance from the mid-range soundbars, and you will also get features like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support thanks to virtualised or up-firing speakers built into the soundbars, better connectivity and support for smart assistants like Alexa.

What Are the Best Premium Soundbars?

At the higher end of the soundbar market, sound performance once again levels up so you can expect even better audio quality. Many of the flagship options from the likes of Sonos, Samsung and Bose offer superior, more precise Dolby Atmos and DTS:X through more dedicated up and side-firing drivers, as well as features like advanced spatial processing.

You will also find better integrated bass, as well as features like HDMI 2.1 passthrough for gaming on some models, though you are looking at between £1,000 and £2,000 at this end of the market.

Soundbar prices vary quite considerably. You can find budget models like the very good Sony HT-SF150 for under £100 or Sonos Ray for under £200. They offer basic upgrades and will improve your TV audio.

You then have mid-range options, such as the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) or Samsung Q700D, which cost between £400 and £700 and provide better sound and features like smart assistant support and virtual Dolby Atmos..

How Do You Choose the Right Soundbar for Your TV?

To choose the right soundbar, first consider the capabilities of your TV, the size of your room, and the features you are primarily looking for, whether that's a night mode or Dolby Atmos support. You should also consider what brand of TV you have or any other speakers you have in your home. If you have Sonos speakers, a Sonos soundbar would be a good choice, while if you have a Samsung TV, a Samsung soundbar may offer more than another brand.

Try to match a soundbar's width to your TV if you're looking for your setup to be pleasing to the eye, while picking a soundbar with HDMI eARC, or at least HDMI ARC, compatibility will give you simple control.

If you're just looking for dialogue enhancement, a 2.0 or 2.1 channel system will be perfect and you'll find this at the lower end of the market so you won't have to spend a fortune. It's usually very straightforward to connect a soundbar to your TV. The most common options are HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC and Optical. HDMI eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is recommended where possible, supporting advanced audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) supports more compressed audio formats like Dolby Digital due to its lower bandwidth, though it still allows for a single cable to send TV audio to the soundbar and allow control with your TV remote. If HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC aren't available on your TV, an Optical cable provides a reliable digital audio connection.

How Does a Soundbar Compare to a Surround Sound System?

When comparing soundbars vs surround sound, soundbars offer a compact and convenient solution for better TV audio, usually simulating surround sound and effectively too, depending on the option you choose. They are very simple, one-box solutions that are great for space-saving.

True surround sound systems, meanwhile, use multiple physically separate speakers (front, centre, rears) and a receiver to create a more distinct, accurate, and enveloping audio experience. They are generally better for larger rooms where there is space to have several speakers.

Garden furniture is in its glow-up era. Long gone are the days where our only options were cheap plastic chairs — today's designs for outdoors not only look as good as indoor furniture, but they make use of brilliantly considered materials that are stylish, interesting, and design-forward.

And while, yes, at the top end of the market, some incredible things are happening with outdoor furniture, at the lower end, I'm surprised by how innovation can meet an affordable price tag, too.

What I realize, however, is that with outdoor furniture, fewer people know where to look. Yes, you might flock to the high street (which sells out of new designs consistently every year as soon as the sun peeps out from behind a cloud), but there are some great stores at both ends of the market you might be missing out on. If you've got a bit more budget to spend, there are plenty of retailers who specialize just in outdoor furniture, and that's sometimes where you can find the real magic pieces.

So, I've curated a list of some of my very favorite brands, including well-known brands such as H&M and Heal's, and those you might not be as familiar with yet, such as Ethimo and Nth Degree. But also, I've asked the experts for their advice on what to look for, and the main considerations for each type of furniture. This is our guide that is updated every year, and for 2026 I've included an edit of some of my favorite finds from the high street, as well as adding in new brands (including some that have launched in the last year) into this guide, so you've got the most up-to-date list of where to shop for your modern garden.

What Are the Best Garden Furniture Brands and Where Do I Buy Them?

There are a whole lot of outdoor furniture brands out there, but I can't vouch for them all. The ones I can vouch for, however, have made this list. These are brands I know well, have been hands-on with, and most importantly, are the ones doing the best, most stylish, and on-trend designs. A mix of high-street and high-end, this is where the Livingetc reader should be shopping, no matter your budget.

Some of the high-end outdoor furniture brands don't sell direct online, so we have highlighted the ones that do or the great third-party retailers to find them on — think the likes of Heal's, Chaplins and Made in Design.

Of course, when it comes to outdoor furniture you want to try first, it makes sense to head to a showroom to give them a test drive, so I've included those details, too, where appropriate.

Arteriors

Price range: £££
Showrooms: Arteriors has a showroom in London's Chelsea Harbour Design Centre.

Arteriors is a luxury home brand with a strong aesthetic value. You won't find those bright, colorful outdoor furniture pieces among its core offering; think instead earthy, tactile finishes, neutral palettes, and high-quality natural materials.

For its outdoor offering, this brand is the epitome of design, so good you'd use it inside, too. None of the materials or designs used give away its brilliantly durable qualities as so often it does, even for the best garden furniture brands.

You can't buy from Arteriors directly unless you're in the trade, but Sweetpea & Willow is one of its major retailers.

Anthropologie

Price range: ££
Stores: There are stores across the nation, though largely outdoor furniture is sold only online.

If you've ever shopped in Anthropologie, you'll probably already be familiar with its elevated 'boho' style, and its outdoor furniture follows suit. While its outdoor range isn't the biggest, it packs a punch in what it does offer, capturing a lifestyle aesthetic even more than just a certain look.

Shopping its range is a little trickier. It lends itself to more of the impulse buy, as you never really know if a piece will be in stock the next time you look, where some of the brands on this list have continuing ranges from year to year.

This year, there are some brilliant outdoor stools in colorful ceramics, as well as resort-style rattan furniture, and some whimsical metal pieces with scallops and curves.

Atkin & Thyme

Price range: ££
Stores: Atkin & Thyme is an online retailer with an outlet store in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Atkin & Thyme has a brilliantly large selection of outdoor furniture, including seating as well as pergolas, gazebos, and shades. The style is perfectly contemporary and cool, but more elevated than similar versions you'll find on the high street. The styles range from the simpler, modern designs to ideas with a bit more panache — a wicker corner sofa on one hand to this more contemporary terracotta dining table.

Where some retailers have already sold out for the year, Atkin & Thyme still has a healthy stock across its site, and price-wise, it's not extravagantly expensive.

Bontempi

Price: £££
Showrooms:

Italian design brand Bontempi has a modern-classic approach to outdoor furniture. Its designs are sleek and modern, using durable contemporary materials such as lacquered steel, design-forward plastics, and even recycled materials.

I've visited Bontempi showrooms many times over the years, and am always struck by the lightness of the designs. They're not imposing on the design, but feel like natural complements to outdoor spaces, whether you choose earthy neutrals or something a bit brighter and more colorful. Its focus is more on outdoor dining, so the collection consists of dining chairs, tables, and coffee and side tables.

You can't buy from Bontempi directly, but you can shop the collection at retailers such as Chaplin's.

Carl Hansen & Son

Price range: £££
Showrooms: The brand's London flagship can be found at 48A Pimlico Road, Belgravia, SW1W 8LP.

You might know Carl Hansen & Son best for the Wishbone Chair, a piece of iconic furniture that demonstrates the Danish brand's timeless, quality design.

Its outdoor seating range isn't just a replication of its interior products, but a collection of distinct pieces made from FSC-certified teak, the creme de la creme of woods used for the best garden furniture.

This year, the brand released its Embrace Outdoor Lounge Series, pictured above, at Stockholm Design Week, taking its outdoor range into upholstered sofa-style furniture.

Carl Hansen doesn't retail direct from its website, but you can buy direct from its Pimlico flagship, and find a list of its retailers online.

Denbigh Rowe

Price range: ££
Showrooms: The brand's Chelsea showroom is soon to open on King's Road.

Denbigh Rowe is a British furniture brand dedicated to luxury outdoor furniture. The brand's designs are made in Bali, with Denbigh Rowe working with local craftspeople and artisans, from Indonesian teak.

Think classic, good-looking garden furniture that puts the material at the heart. The Cavala chair has smooth, modern curves, while the Colmar table is the sort of dining table that works in almost any style of garden. When you're looking for comfort, the Cambridge, Cavala, and Galata are your plump, cushioned outdoor sofa choices.

It's luxury furniture, for sure, but its price point isn't wild for the quality and style.

Dusk

Price: £
Stores: Dusk is an online retailer that has occasional pop-ups across the UK.

Dusk has quite a large catalogue of designs; however, its garden furniture range is quite compact. There are 30 pieces currently in the section, across dining tables, sofas, chairs, storage, umbrellas, and more.

Price-wise, it's pretty affordable. Outdoor dining tables range from about £200 to £2,000, depending on the size, style, and materials.

Ethimo

Price range: £££
Showrooms: Ethimo's flagship is found at 35-39 Old Street, EC1V 9HX

At any Design Week, I always seek out the Ethimo stand to see what novelties they've come up with for the next summer season. It's a dedicated outdoor brand that pushes the envelope when it comes to outdoor furniture design, embracing materials and forms in new and unexpected ways. Think theatrical outdoor floor lamps, tables made from enamelled lava stone, voluminous comfortable outdoor armchairs, and tent-like daybeds (and don't discount its accessories, either. Its planters are just as good as its outdoor furniture). Always innovative, always something special.

Ethimo, again, isn't a brand you can buy from directly online unless you're in trade, but it counts the likes of Made in Design and Royal Design among its retailers.

Habitat

Price: £

Habitat is, probably, the best garden furniture brand for great design on a budget, in this editor's opinion. An upholstered six-seater outdoor corner sofa from the brand will set you back around a very competitive £800, while something like this fun, bright orange patio set, consisting of a bench, two chairs, and a coffee table, is only £150.

While it has designs that cover the basics of what most people go for for garden furniture, for the more design-minded, it has a surprisingly large range of options that take a bigger swing, either through the use of color, or through a modern silhouette.

It's worth keeping an eye on the reviews before you buy, but in my experience with Habitat, the quality well outperforms the price tag.

Heal's

Price: ££ - £££
Showroom: The main store is on Tottenham Court Road, London, but there are a series of smaller stores and pop-ups across London and the north of England.

Though the iconic London furniture shop does have its own design ranges for furniture and decor, when it comes to outdoor furniture, Heal's has a curation of some of the best garden furniture brands instead. Think Case, Kartell, Fritz Hansen, Muuto, Normann Copenhagen, and more.

If you're interested in sustainability, it also stocks one of my favorite sustainable product design brands, Mater — specifically its outdoor table and chair set made from recycled ocean plastic. It's a Tom Dixon stockist too, and stocks the brand's new outdoor furniture range Groove, too, which was pictured at the start of this article.

H&M Home

H&M Home only has a small offering of outdoor furniture each year, but it brings its signature aesthetic to these pieces. It often stands apart from other retailers for its different point of view, and also its price point — often pretty affordable. The hero piece of this year has to be this woven outdoor chair. It looks convincingly like natural wicker, but it's actually made from iron and Polyethylene, making it durable for outdoor spaces.

H&M's true aesthetic seems to come through in its larger pieces. There's a sense of a design philosophy: minimalist, modern, but with some sense of originality that often makes its outdoor furniture a quick sell-out.

IKEA

Price range: £

I'm sure I hardly have to explain the concept of IKEA to you, but for budget-friendly outdoor furniture, the Scandi super brand still delivers. Especially when it comes to IKEA's outdoor sofas.

What's new for this year? The NÄMMARÖ range offers comfortable corner sofas for under £500, made from acacia — the next best thing to teak when it comes to outdoor furniture materials — while I also find the TVARÖ range, with its resort-like styling, a charming option, too.

Janus Et Cie

Price range: £££
Showrooms: Janus Et Cie's London showroom opened last summer: 139-141 Fulham Rd, SW3 6SD

With the opening of its showroom in London last year, American luxury outdoor brand Janus Et Cie cemented itself as a player in the UK design scene. It's a brand that has the power of the 'vibe' — just by shopping there, you're bringing a guaranteed aesthetic that will elevate your outdoor space.

The vibe in question definitely has that American feel. It's charmingly preppy, and undoubtedly a timeless approach to outdoor furniture, but it leans modern just the right amount to make it feel design-forward, too.

You can count owning a house with a pool as firmly on my vision board, just for the sake of owning a Janus Et Cie sun lounger.

John Lewis

Price range: ££

High street staple John Lewis remains one of my go-tos for mid-range outdoor furniture with great design at its core. Previewing the collection for this summer, interiors editor Emma Breislin's favorite piece might have been the John Lewis Lozenge sofa, featured above, but don't overlook its more classic wood furniture range, made in affordable but elevated acacia.

For something a little more unexpected, check out its collaboration with Sanderson textiles for a corner sofa, too. Definitely a statement-making piece.

Neptune

Price range: £££

Neptune does classic, timeless style with just the right amount of edge, and its outdoor furniture range is no different. Yes, you'll find those tried and trusted outdoor furniture materials such as rattan, wicker, steel, and teak, but perfectly pitched for a transitional style.

If your budget is up to it, this is where you should buy wicker outdoor furniture if that's your thing — I think Neptune's Longmeadow Carver design might be my favorite I've ever seen in the material. If you're looking on the more modern end of the spectrum, the teak Stanway table is my pick.

Next

Price range: £ - ££

Next is probably the most surprising source for outdoor furniture for the design-minded on this list. Yes, you might know it for its more everyday outdoor furniture offering, but once you dig into the site, or visit one of its home stores, you'll have some pretty special designs revealed to you.

This year, I've been all over the brand's boucle outdoor collection, which marries durable rattan-style furniture with this garden-friendly take on the fabric trend, but I'm also rating some of its acacia wood furniture designs, and this small garden-friendly rattan table set, too.

The Nth Degree

Price range: £££
Showrooms: Hale, Manchester, and soon-to-open in Clerkenwell, London

I've got to be honest, Nth Degree is a relatively new discovery for me in the world of outdoor furniture, but when I did discover it, I had one of those 'where have you been all my life' moments. It's elegant, elevated outdoor furniture design — sometimes minimalist, sometimes more characterful, but always sophisticated, and never gaudy.

Grouped in cohesive 'collections', the N2 collection, pictured above, with its teak frame and woven panels, is a particular standout, but its range extends to everything from pool loungers to indoor outdoor rugs.

The luxury brand, which hails from Manchester, recently opened its first London showroom, after launching spaces near Manchester first. The brand is exhibiting at this year's Chelsea Flower Show, too.

Soho Home

Price range: £££

If you're looking for the best garden furniture with a little character, Soho Home is where to shop. Its designs never push over the edge of the subtle yet glamorous side of maximalism, but always deliver pieces with a lust-worthiness that's hard to describe.

Its Theodore Sofa is probably the best striped outdoor sofa you'll find, while this Morrell Outdoor Dining Chair is fully upholstered in an outdoor-use linen. When we talk about outdoor furniture that doesn't look like outdoor furniture, Soho Home sets the gold standard.

Swyft

Price: £ - ££
Stores: You'll find Swyft's outdoor sofas at its London flagship in London's Islington Square.

There are a lot of different styles, materials, and set-ups available for garden furniture, so where do you start with what to choose?

If the garden furniture is the first thing you're thinking about, you've already gone wrong. "Don’t start with the furniture — start with how you want to live," says Nth Degree's Laura Cranston. "Think about how your outdoor space will be used, at what times of day, and in which seasons. From there, consider proportion and flow — choose pieces that feel like a natural extension of your home, not an afterthought."

The best uses of outdoor furniture are considered at the same time as the garden's layout. "A well-considered layout with flexible, layered furniture will always feel more luxurious than simply filling space," Laura says.

What Materials Are Best for Outdoor Furniture?

Material is never more important than with outdoor furniture to ensure it survives whatever the great outdoors throws at it. "When choosing outdoor furniture, it’s essential to consider materials, comfort, weather resistance, and durability," says Mike Durbridge, CEO at Andrew Martin. "For garden seating, comfort is key, especially if the furniture will be used for extended periods. Cushions or padded seats can add extra comfort, but they must be made from weather-resistant fabrics to ensure they maintain their integrity with minimal upkeep. Durability is crucial, as outdoor furniture is constantly exposed to varying weather conditions like rain, humidity, and UV rays."

As well as UV and water resistance, outdoor textiles should have anti-mould, anti-mildew, and anti-microbial properties. Ideally, any foam filling (a must for comfortable outdoor furniture) should have quick-drying properties that channel water out of the material.

Wood

When it comes to the best wood for outdoor furniture, "Teak is the gold standard," says Laura Cranston. "Naturally high in oils, it’s resistant to water, rot, and insects."

"Over time, teak develops a silver-gray patina which adds character, though it can be maintained with occasional cleaning and, over time, oiling if a richer wood tone is preferred," Mike Durbridge adds.

Teak is one of the expensive outdoor furniture materials, but acacia is a more budget-friendly alternative that has the same high-end look, if not quite the same durability.

Knowing how to care for wooden outdoor furniture is important, too. "For wooden surfaces, regular cleaning with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth helps remove dirt and stains," Bo Hellberg, CMO at outdoor furniture brand Grythyttan Stålmöbler, explains. "If you want to maintain the wood’s original color, applying a light coat of oil once or twice a year protects against moisture and sun exposure. To prevent unnecessary wear, keep wooden surfaces dry and avoid placing hot or wet objects directly on them."

Metal

From wrought iron to galvanized steel, metal is a durable choice for outdoor furniture, that is sometimes unfairly characterized as uncomfortable. "When constructed with ergonomics in mind, and expertly designed to distribute weight evenly across the surface, weather-resistant seating can offer optimal support and comfort tailored to the human body," Bo Hellberg says.

While some metal outdoor furniture can be heavy, there are some styles that are lighterweight and still as practical "Metal chairs, particularly those made from powder-coated aluminium, provide a more contemporary look while offering strength and stability," says Mike Durbridge. "Powder-coated aluminium is lightweight, rust-resistant, and easy to move around, making it an excellent option for flexible seating arrangements."

Rust is the big killer when it comes to metal furniture, but generally, modern furniture designs have it covered. "Rust-proof frames, such as powder-coated aluminium, ensure durability in a variety of climates," Mike says. "The powder-coating process involves applying a protective layer that bonds to the metal, creating a barrier against moisture and oxidation. This prevents rust from forming, even in humid or coastal environments where exposure to salt air can accelerate corrosion."

"Metal parts require minimal maintenance — just an occasional wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove dust and grime," Bo adds. "While the metal is designed to resist rust, checking for small scratches and touching them up with a protective spray or wax can help prevent moisture damage. To protect the finish, avoid dragging metal furniture across rough surfaces."

There are a multitude of reasons you might want to leave outdoor furniture outside in winter. You may have no storage space, for example, or you might not want to spend all winter staring at furniture covers. There are some outdoor furniture materials you really don't want to leave outside, and some that will be fine. None, are going to be the better for it, just to warn you.

Powder-coated aluminium and galvanized steel both should weather the storm, if you keep an eye on them and repair any damage to its weatherproof coating. Teak is hardy enough to be left outside, too.

The best time to shop outdoor furniture sales is in the autumn, in the run up to and across the Black Friday weekend into Cyber Monday," advises Lucy Searle, Livingetc's Content Director for Audience. The Nespresso Vertuo Next is the best Nespresso for single-serve coffee, because it balances a compact and sustainable design (the machine is made from 50% recycled plastic). It's compatible with all the Vertuo pods, so you can make single shots, double shots, 5oz, 8oz, and 14oz coffees too.

The Vertuo Next warms up in under a minute and will make coffee in the same time too. All the coffees I have made in the Nespresso have been good, well-balanced coffees. They're consistently extracted and then spun with Nespresso's centifusion technology, boasting a thick, rich crema.

Nespresso's Vertuo pods are incredibly diverse, but that's because they have to be. You can't use any other pods in these machines, because of the smart (but frustrating) barcode recognition technology. If you want a milky coffee, you'll need to invest in their Aeroccino milk frother. It's an added cost, which isn't ideal, but sometimes you can find a bundle deal.

The best single-serve coffee maker for fresh coffee

When I want to find the best, I always ask experts which appliances they use at home. The Cuisinart Grind and Brew is next to the Nespresso in popularity amongst the experts. It's a speciality coffee maker, which just happens to brew using pods.

The grinder ensures your re-usable pods are filled with fresh coffee. Whether it makes an espresso or Americano, the flavors are consistently bold and rich, like no other single-serve machine. It's also compact enough to clear low wall cupboards and sit neatly onto any countertop.

If you want the versatility offered by other machines, you might find this a little frustrating. Whichever beans you choose, your cups will always be a little acidic. The Cuisinart has no capacity to froth milk, so you'll need to buy one separately. There's also no warming feature, so your coffee needs to be sipped as soon as it has brewed.

The best luxury single-serve coffee maker

You won't find a more beautiful coffee maker than this. The shiny stainless steel finish looks ultra-premium and it's also really compact. Any home would have space for it. Any coffee connosiseur should make space for it too; all our experts declared it love at first sight when we unboxed this. Luckily, the coffee it makes can live up to the Vertuo Creatista's appearance.

Nespresso paired with another coffee giant, Breville, to deliver the best milk frothing capacities I've ever tested on a single-serve machine. It did warm the milk to the cusp of burning once, but was otherwise perfect, even with plant-based milks. The combination of Nespresso's pods and the silky milk meant that the coffees I made were delicious.

The drawback of any Nespresso single-serve machine is the pods. They're an ongoing cost and ever-growing waste product. Re-usable pods aren't compatible with the Creatista; you can only use Nespresso's special Vertuo pods. This means your tied to specific flavors and sources.

It's quick, slick, and extremely covetable, but for $750 you have to ignore the 'value for money' aspect of this purchase. It's an indulgence.

The best single-serve French press

The beauty of the petite Espro P3 is that it delivers all the prestigious features of their larger models, but in a more compact and equally luxurious vessel. Most French presses have a single filter, but the Espro has a double filter with a really tight seal. This means that the cups of coffee it makes are ultra smooth. There are no stray grains in the cup. It's also really well insulated, so you get a warm, evenly brewed cup of coffee every time.

This filter-insulator combination makes it excellent for hopping on the latest coffee trend: cold brew. You can make an incredible concentrate without having to buy a separate coffee maker. Even better, this won't demand much room in your refrigerator or countertop either.

The obvious drawback is that Americano and cold brew are all that the French press can make. There are no espressos or milky coffees here. Also, French presses require a lot more effort to make coffee with. The process is involved and will need at least ten minutes, including washing up. If you normally consume your coffee in a hurry, you might need an automatic machine.

This single-serve coffee maker is a classic pour-over coffee maker. When in use, it would slot seamlessly into any kitchen aesthetic. When not in use, sit it with the rest of your coffee cups: it's stackable and durable. For $15, you'll find it hard to get more for your money.

Compared to automatic single-serve coffee makers, the Melitta is slower and more hands-on. You'll need to fit it with filter paper and use a gooseneck kettle if you want to make a delicate and well-balanced cup of coffee. If you treat coffee as a ritual, you'll enjoy this part of the process, but if you're often in a hurry when making your coffee, it will get frustrating.

This has a single drain, so you'll need to be careful with your water measurements. It's easy to accidentally over-brew coffee if you're too quick with pouring water. I'd strongly recommend that you pre-bloom the coffee. You'll get much better flavors as a result.

I've tested the best espresso machines on the market and, if you closed your eyes, you wouldn't be able to taste the difference between the coffee that this can make and the shots brewed by machines which are twenty times the price. It's remarkable.

However, the reason this is so small and cheap in comparison is that it can't make anything more than an espresso. It's a very simple, manual machine. At $100 it feels expensive for the size and in comparison to bigger models, but you're paying for the quality.

Keurigs are firm favorites in most households. The K-Supreme Plus is the brand's top-tier model, offering a more premium take on the ultra-affordable single-serve models for which they're so well known.

This comes with an over-ice function, multiple brew sizes, and the option to set user-profiles. It can make coffees from 5 to 12 oz in size, so has a large reservoir to support that. This means that you can make multiple coffees in quick succession, unlike with most other single-serve machines.

This will brew a decent cup of coffee in under a minute, but the flavors are a little flat. Even with their new MultStream technology, the Morning Coffee maker or Nespresso could easily make a better brew. It also doesn't feel ultra-premium, so if you want a machine which will last, you might be better searching elsewhere.

The best single-serve coffee maker for versatility

Ninja might not be coffee giants, but they have mastered the multifunctional machine. The tall and wide machine demands quite some space on the countertop, but it's worth it when you consider the functions which it overs. The DualBrew Pro can switch between lattes, drip coffee, iced coffee, pod coffee and there are settings which will make the coffee taste richer, sweeter, deeper, or lighter.

The frothing tool adds even more versatility to the coffee menu on offer with the DualBrew. However, if you use plant-based milks, you won't have much luck. This makes smooth and glossy dairy milk, but struggled to get anything more than bubbles out of almond milk.

If you don't yet own a coffee grinder, this might be your sign to invest in one. Whilst you can use coffee pods in the DualBrew Pro, it's worth testing it with some freshly ground coffee. This is where the flavors really shine through. You might not need all these functions, so don't waste money or space on a machine which will over cater, but if you like to change things yp often, you'll love this.

Choosing a good single-serve coffee maker is simple when you know what you're looking for. There are a few key factors to consider:

Brewing method
Single-serve brewers come in all shapes and sizes. The way that coffee flavors are extracted will affect the flavors of your cup. If you like an acidic, bitter brew, the French press will be better. If you wan a smooth, more delicate cup, opting for the pour-over will treat your palette.

Budget
Once you know what you want your coffee to taste like, set a budget. Single serve coffee makers don't need to cost hundreds of dollars. Premium models can cost up to $500, but I'd aim to keep under $200 to be sensible.

Space and style
You'll be keeping your single-serve coffee maker on show, so it needs to match your kitchen aesthetics. If you have a color scheme, choose one which co-odinates, or if you have quite slim countertops, you might need something a little more subtle.

Speed and sound
When you want coffee ready, you probably have a time scale in mind. If you're making it in the morning, you might want it to be quiet too. More artisanal coffee machines might take more time or make a little more news if they're grinding coffee freshly.

Extra features
You might have some other coffee needs, so think about these whilst you shop. If you like frothed milk, look for a machine with a steam wand, or if you like smart features, there are plenty of machines which come with applications and intelligent features.

The best coffee grinder overall

In Fellow’s true Scandinavian style, the Fellow Ode is a beautiful grinder. It blends a mechanical style with minimalist, resulting in an incredibly capable grinder that will add some finesse to your coffee station.

This is the only flat burr grinder in our guide, but that isn’t what secured it top spot. It certainly helped; the grounds it produced were the most consistent of any we tested. In fact, this didn’t struggle on any of its 30 settings, offering distinct, but consistent grind sizes across the board. Our only comment would be that the finest setting could afford to be a little finer and more dusty, but that only really applies to devoted espresso drinkers. The results of these delightfully consistent grinds were some deliciously confident coffees — the flavors were bold, bright, and super smooth.

Thirty grind settings is more than enough for the average coffee drinker, although it is one of the smallest ranges in our buying guide. Selecting the right one for your brew style is easy. The large dial on the front twists into position. Using the whole grinder is an ASMR experience: the dial gently ticks, the magnetic grounds container softly clunks into place, and the brushed stainless steel makes a wonderful, matte noise when you wipe it down. It’s a truly premium product.

The Fellow Ode does, of course, come with a premium price tag. For a machine with very little automation, it’s expensive. However, to get such quality and design, you’ll need to spend about this much anyway.

The best luxury coffee grinder

It seems inevitable that Smeg, the retro, iconic Italian brand makes the most stylish coffee product. I was ready for this to be all form and no function, but it’s really great. Expensive, but great.

These grinders are available in a range of colors, from classic black and white to pastel pink (there’s even a Dolce & Gabbana blue and white design which I will dream about owning for the rest of my life). They’re well suited for a range of interiors, but certainly made to be admired. The dimensions are bigger than most, so you’ll probably end up leaving this on display. You’ll get lots of comments on it, but those who are already short on space should bear this in mind.

Using the Smeg is very straightforward. Their magnetic, glass grounds container makes the perfect storage pot. It suffered from the least static of all our tests, earning a lot of respect from our experts.

When we took a look at our grounds, they were generally consistent. Although, the finer the grind size, the less distinction there is between grounds. This wasn’t a problem for French press or espressos, but if you’re making pour-over coffee, be ready to have a little less control over your flavors.

The best coffee grinder for fine grinds

Breville’s Smart Dose Control Grinder is one of the most talked about in the barista community. Mention it to any coffee nut and you’ll elicit a knowing nod. This is technically perfect.

The shiny, stainless steel aesthetic exhudes a sense of professionalism. It looks like it belongs on a speciality coffee shop. If you own a stainless steel espresso machine, the aesthetics of this will be perfect.

Functionally, Breville caters to a range of coffee drinkers. It comes with smart pre-sets, so if you’re not confident on which grind size suits you, select a function, and the grinder will do the rest for you. As you get more technical and want to be involved in the coffee process, the Breville offers you complete customization. You can adjust the settings to suit your palette perfectly. We thought this was especially consistent on superfine grinds, making a delicate, well-balanced espresso shot. However, across the full range, this was good, with very little retention and no popcorning either.

With all this on offer, you won’t be surprised to hear that the price is toppy. It’s still good value, but you’ll need to set aside some more money if you want to enjoy some of Breville’s luxuries. It also doesn't come with a grounds container. We suspected this is because they provide a portafilter holder, so are expecting you to grind straight into the basket. However, if you don't have an espresso machine, finding a substitute of grounds container can be messy work.

The best coffee grinder for beginners

KitchenAid have been the ones to watch in the coffee market. They’re better known for their iconic stand mixers, but I’ve tested all their coffee products now and they’re as impressive as the coffee giants.

The KitchenAid grinder is a great investment for those looking for an entry-level grinder. The controls are easy to use: the dial, bean hopper, and grounds container are self explanatory. Moreover, the range of 70 grind settings gives you room to grow and explore in your coffee preferences. You don’t really need 70 different settings, but it’s a nice luxury to have.

In our tests, this had very little static and grounds retention, which is impressive. The grinds were generally consistent, although on the absolute coarsest setting they looked a little uneven. That’s me being picky though.

The only reason I wouldn’t recommend this is if you have low wall cabinets. This is tall and won’t clear them, so could create problems when you need to store it. It also uses conical burrs, which are generally good, but specialists will use flat burrs to minimize heat production. Also, don’t keep your beans in the bean hopper because it isn’t UV protected — only put the beans in which you plan to grind.

The best manual coffee grinder

There are plenty of reasons to buy manual coffee grinders: they can be quieter, more compact, and easily portable. There is, however, just one portable grinder that I would buy.

The 1zpresso is a truly premium product. It feels exactly how it looks: like it has been designed from high-grade stainless steel and titanium???. It feels weighty, but not heavy in the hand. The grinder turns relatively smoothly (you need some arm power) and, when you’re finished, this will pack neatly into a drawer, bag, or the corner of your coffee station.

This looks every part as authentic as mechanised coffee grinders. It’s super smart and I’d be tempted to show-off this hands-on piece of kit.

When we tested the key grind settings (this has hundreds) it performed incredibly well. The grinds were consistent across the settings and, because its manual, this made much less noise, heat, and static when grinding. It’s a tidier process in general. The coffees we brewed with our 1zpresso grounds were bold and flavorful, with great flavor clarity too.

Whilst this is perfect for packing up and taking to work or on your travels, manual coffee makers like this aren’t without their drawbacks. As I’ve mentioned, you need some arm muscle to get this grinding. If you feel rough without your morning coffee, an arm workout might just be enough to send you to your local speciality shop instead.

The best coffee grinder for consistency

It’s only fair that the sustainability-forward coffee giants at Moccamaster made a grinder. This sleek piece of kit has a very technical, boxy aesthetic which would suit a functional coffee station. It’s not quite as curved and beautiful as KitchenAid and Smeg, but it still looks smart.

What Moccamaster lacks in shiny exteriors it makes up for in function. This is super quick, very diverse, and ultra consistent across all xxx settings. The coffees we brewed with the Moccamaster were delicate and flavorful, a pleasing result from such a competent machine.

Whilst I experienced very little grounds retention and popcorning, I was surprised at just how much static was created. This became a little frustrating, especially for a premium model, but you can buy rubber seals and mats to help combat these issues.

I would make sure to buy a model with the right bean hopper for you needs. If you grind exactly the amount that you’ll use, make sure to choose a model which has a glass grounds container. This makes it easy to keep track of quantities. If you’ll grind and store your beans, opt for the stainless steel model. This will preserve your grounds much better, keeping them in peak condition.

The best value coffee grinder

This grinder is a favorite amongst reviewers. If you’ve looked through a few buying guides, you’ll have already been made aware of the Baratza’s sleek design and speedy grinding. Whilst we love it too, it’s not without some limitations.

On the countertop, the Baratza is relatively compact. This is good news for those who live in urban apartments. It’s a little clunky in my opinion and I would like more color options and a little more transparency in the bean hopper and grounds container, but at least your coffee will be protected from UV.

When it comes to grinding this has 40 different settings, which is more than enough for beginners. Changing between them is a little unclear and imprecise, so you’ll have to practice some trial and error to achieve the grind size that you want. It would be good to have something guidance, because our experts had to waste a fair amount of grounds just testing out different settings before they knew which they wanted to use for different coffee.

Once we had established how it all worked, the coffee grounds were a really consistent size. There was also very little grounds retention, which is great news if you like to grind in doses. I would recommend only grinding what you need in the Baratza because you’ll spot that there’s some popcorning, which isn’t great for the long-term taste of your beans.

With that said, we made some really delicious coffee. The precision and consistency of the Baratza married to make a full bodied, bold cup of coffee, both in a French press and espresso machine. Our pour-over was a little flat, so we would recommend sticking to the more extreme grinds.

The best basic coffee grinder

OXO has stormed the coffee market with their affordable coffee products (the most popular being their excellent cold brew coffee maker). At under $100, the OXO grinder is no exception. It's compact, consistent, and has almost no grounds retention.

The body style would suit ultra modern interiors, especially if you already have a few stainless steel appliances. From a distance, it rivals more premium machines. However, close up, there are a few plastic finishes where others would have rubber or metal, and the grounds container walls are a little thin and, most notably, stainless steel instead of glass. This means that you can't watch and measure how much coffee you're grinding, so you'll need to be careful with the beans that you feed into the beans hopper.

The OXO uses conical burrs, which create a little more heat than flat burrs, but their results are generally good. As you lean towards the extreme (finest or coarsest) settings, you might see some inconsistencies. The finer OXO grinds have a fair amount of variation in their sizes, resulting in a slightly less than perfect espresso. It was still good, but I’ve had better. This is great on coarse grinds, especially French presses. I made some bold and strong coffee with the OXO's grounds. 

The best budget coffee grinder

Finding a good grinder for less than $100 should be tricky. You want conical burrs, quality, and consistency, which normally amount to at least $200. However, Bodum, with their signature, Danish design, premium feel, and reasonable price tag, has delivered a coffee grinder which is exceptional value.

Sitting on the countertop, this is pretty compact. The tube design is simple, subtle, and even close-up, it looks smart. Simply twisting xxx offers you access to Bodum’s range of xxx grind settings, which are all reasonably consistent.

As you might expect from a cheaper model, this is louder than most. It also has a considerable amount of grounds retention, which is frustrating if you have weighed your coffee beans out before grinding. I also spotted some popcorning in the bean hopper, which will diminish some of your coffee flavors if the same beans get bounced around on a daily basis. My advice would be to always empty your grounds hopper after each use. It’s a little more work, but you’ll thank me for saving your flavors.

A beginner probably wouldn’t have any issues with the Bodum’s slightly imperfect performance. However, if you plan on buying just one grinder and using it for the rest of your life, I would increase your budget and scroll back up this list.

There is little point in buying a recliner if not for comfort. So, choosing a material that feels good on your body is crucial when making your selection. Interior designer Nina Lichtenstein offers a few suggestions for materials that are cozy, stylish, and stand up to everyday life.

Number one is leather — ‘a timeless material that offers durability and easy maintenance.’ While it is one of the more expensive options, high quality leather like full or top-grain varieties age like fine wine. They give your recliner ‘a sleek, sophisticated look while providing a soft, comfortable seating experience,’ Nina enthuses.

Another go-to is fabric, though not all are created equal. Opt for high-quality upholsteries, like ones made from linen or cotton, urges the designer. Plus, they’re ‘available in various colors and patterns, making it easy to match your decor.’

First, assess your surrounding furniture. Where does your recliner make the most sense? Are there open spaces? One of the three vanity light bulbs in my bathroom went out recently, a minor annoyance that I knew I would address — eventually. It remained unlit, spookily flickering every few days for, well — an embarrassingly long time. Admittedly, it wasn’t until the second bulb went out and I attempted to do my makeup in 67% darkness that I finally made any effort to change them.

After 30 minutes of sifting through tacky rainbow lighting, I came across a real gem: a vintage-inspired light bulb from Amazon with an almost crystalline effect, emitting a warm white light, all for $12.99 a bulb.

I unscrewed my old, mostly dead lights and screwed in my new ones, which took maybe 45 seconds. Then I flipped on the switch, and voilà! These Amazon pineapple light bulbs transformed my bathroom lighting into an elegant, ambient space, making it feel as if the entire room were aglow with candles.

I knew lighting made a difference, but I couldn’t have anticipated such a dramatic transformation. And if you don’t believe me, believe the reviews: 4.5/5 stars from over 241 reviews on Amazon. The bulbs matched my dimmer perfectly, which is great because I probably adjust mine four times a day. The Amazon description refers to them as 'pineapple' shaped — not untrue per se, but it certainly doesn’t do this graceful design any justice.

Consider placing a trio in a bathroom vanity like mine, or even to reinvent light fixtures you already own. I saw a particularly inspiring image in the product’s customer reviews of this bulb in a relatively simple sconce setting, turning the bulb into the main event. Given their softer glow compared to your usual LED, these would also be great for hallways you might walk through at night or a TV room you use before bed. Anywhere conducive to setting the mood and a little R&R.

I rent my apartment, so there’s not much I can do in terms of renovations, but I think this might just be the next best thing. Minimal effort for maximum impact — now that’s my kind of hack.
