We've found some of the most stunning – and practical – laundry room ideas that have graced the pages of Livingetc and our Modern Homes section.

Along with pantries, laundry rooms and utility rooms are arguably the most useful the room in the house; aside from keeping laundry away from the rest of the home, these spaces often also double up as mud rooms or boot rooms and storage spaces. Some of us even manage to squeeze in pantry storage. But despite being a much-used space, they're not exactly high on the list when it comes to interior design. Hopefully these 35 stylish laundry room ideas will help change your mind.

Whether you opt for shaker style country-chic cabinetry, glam brass accents, patterned paper or sleek storage that Marie Kondo would approve of, there's an idea here for everyone.

If you have pets, it pays to incorporate a pet-wash station, à la Dina Bandman. Patterned wallpaper, basket storage, floating shelves and decorative accessories including potted plants and pretty vases transform this utility come laundry room into an Instagrammable space.

If the room is in a countryside setting, the utility room could also double up as a boot room or mud room, complete with coat storage and built-in bench seating for removing welly boots. A butler sink and a tap with ceramic handles would add to the country vibe, as would tongue and groove cabinetry. Sliding pocket doors or barn style doors are also high on our wish list for laundry rooms, as are pretty shutters.

For something more city chic, handless cabinetry, sleek lighting and matte surfaces work together to create a calming, zen interior.

And when it comes to colour, these laundry rooms and utility spaces are beautiful whether they come in blue, grey, green or pink. There's even chalkboard paint for multi-functional spaces, as chalkboard painted doors can double up as shopping lists and to-do lists, or as a doodle board for a room that doubles as a play room.

And finally, size isn't everything as these spaces prove; whether you just have a cupboard sized area to work with or a cavernous room, there's chic and stylish laundry room ideas to suit every sized space.

What paint colour is best for a laundry room?

A laundry room should feel like a clean and organised space, so while bold colour can be fun, we would recommend sticking to white walls or a soft grey paint colour.

What do you put in a laundry room?

A washing machine is obviously essential, and you'll want a sink too for soaking handwash items. A tumble dryer is useful but not essential, and you'll want a rail (at the very least) to be able to air shirts and other clothing. Looking through these 35 laundry room ideas, we also love the idea of laundry trollies on wheels that can tuck away under the worktop – ideal for separating whites from colours for example.

How can I make my laundry room look nice?

Invest in a stylish sink and tap, and stylish cabinetry to disguise the washing machine and storage. Keep surfaces as clear and clutter-free as you can, and if you have open shelving then opt for pretty baskets to keep things like laundry detergent and fabric softener organised.
