Create a cool and cosy winter bedroom retreat with Next Home
Promotional feature with Next Home
We spend so much of our time in bed, a third of our lives in fact, that it needs to be as cosy and comfortable as you can make it. So think about the things you can do to create a peaceful haven to escape from the world, especially in the run-up to Christmas when it can be hectic.
Choosing colours is a good starting point. Neutrals are easy to live with and are a good backdrop to introduce other colours. Then there’s the furniture – obviously the bed is the most important piece, so choose one in a style that won’t date, is super comfortable and has a headboard to lean against when you are reading or watching TV.

Bedside tables are essential, too, for a reading lamp and for somewhere to put your phone, favourite creams and scents or a book.

For a relaxing experience, make sure you have plenty of storage, so there aren’t clothes everywhere. A wardrobe for hanging items and chests of drawers for jumpers, tops, pyjamas and underwear.
Add an opulent rug for warmth and to add much-needed texture for that cosy feel. Bedding is all-important too, so choose good quality cotton or linen for a good night’s sleep, then add snuggly throws and cushions to complete the look.
Shop the look: Chunky Cable Knit Throw, from £55, Next Home
Throws
These are the ideal piece to add an extra layer of warmth and to build on your colour scheme. Choose a contrasting colour or pattern to the bedding for interest.
Styling Tip: Throws with tassels or pom poms are best laid diagonally across the bed to show the detail.
Shop the look: Chunky cable knit throw, from £55, Next Home
Bedding
For the ultimate cosy factor, choose bedding in a chunky knit that looks handmade. It will set the scene for a modern country look, just add natural wood furniture and a fur rug.
Styling Tip: Team with a plain jersey cotton sheet and pillowcases for the ultimate in comfort.
Shop the look: Fleece cable knit duvet cover and pillowcase set, from £34, Next Home
Cushions
It’s all about texture and embellishment this season, so mix faux fur cushions with boucle, velour and hand-knitted pieces with fringing, pompoms and bobbles.
Styling Tip: Add extra embellishment to an existing cushion with a tassel at each corner or a new trim around the edge.
Shop the look: Soft velour pom edge cushion, £12, Next Home
Rugs
Rugs are one of the finishing touches to a room and are ideal for adding warmth to a wooden floor, as well as zoning a space and injecting colour and pattern to a plain scheme.
Styling Tip: Why have just one? Layer rugs on top of each other for an eclectic look.
Shop the look: Reuben reversible rug, from £50, Next Home
Benches
Benches are aren’t just for hallways – use them in a bedroom to put socks and shoes on, and as a spot to place cushions and throws from the bed at night.
Styling Tip: Use a bench as a display space for books, or place against the wall and prop a piece of art and/or vase.
Shop the look: Sandham bench, £199, Next Home
Side tables
Side tables are ideal for displaying flowers, a lamp and a book. If storage is tight, opt for one with a drawer for extra storage.
Styling Tip: No room for side tables? Use a handy wall shelf either side instead.
Shop the look: Murphy bedside table, £160, Next Home
Lamps
Lamps come in all shapes and sizes, so consider whether you have room for a floor-standing design as well as one for the bedside or to light a dark dressing table spot.
Styling Tip: Use lamps with a soft glow rather than a harsher overhead light.
Shop the look: Bronx table lamp, £35, Next Home
