If you Google “Is my coffee table too small for my sofa?” you’ll usually get the standard answer: it should be roughly 50 to 70% of the length of your sofa. Great. But good design is so much more about feeling than it is about formulas, and that percentage is broad when the devil is in the detail with a successful living room scheme.

My simplest test is if you’re leaning forward, or actually getting up from the sofa just to put your drink down, then yes, I’d say your coffee table may be too small. And usually, by the time you’re asking, you’ve already sensed something feels off.

Comfort comes first. I’d usually leave around 40 to 50cm between the sofa and coffee table, which gives you enough room to move around without stubbing your toe, while still keeping everything within easy reach. That distance between your sofa and coffee table can make a surprising difference to how natural the whole setup feels.

In eight years of design consultancy, I’ve seen this countless times. A client moves home, brings their coffee table with them, and suddenly the proportions just don’t make sense anymore. Perhaps it’s because we tend to choose coffee tables after the bigger foundational pieces, but they actually have an important job to do, whether that’s holding drinks and small plates when you’re hosting or displaying the books and objects you love.

And I get it.. in a smaller living room, you don’t necessarily want a coffee table taking up valuable floor space. A compact one can absolutely work. The key is to think about what you need it to do first, then find the size and shape that makes the whole seating area feel connected.

Start with scale, but don’t forget how you actually use it

Once you’ve got the spacing right, I’d step away from the measurements for a second and think about your everyday life. How do you actually use the coffee table? Do you host often? Where do the glasses, small plates and accessories end up? Can everyone sitting around it reach it comfortably?

That’s why I always start with what a piece needs to do before deciding what it should look like. The coffee table is the centrepiece of your seating area. It doesn’t need to be extravagant, but its scale, silhouette and shape should relate to the furniture around it. Your rug to coffee table ratio plays into that balance too.

Before I even get into materials, I’d think about shape. If you need a larger table in relation to your sofa, softer corners can make that extra footprint feel much easier to live with. An oval, rounded rectangle or softened square can give you the surface area you need without making the room feel like you’ve placed an obstacle course in the middle of it.

A small coffee table isn’t necessarily the problem

Sometimes, I’ll admit it, I have a soft spot for a smaller coffee table. Maybe it’s a sourced vintage gem, a bold sculptural piece, or simply the perfect pedestal for your stack of unread magazines, and no, I’m not judging. It can also be a lovely place to build out your coffee table decor.

So don’t feel you have to get rid of it just because it doesn’t run the full length of your sofa. The real issue is expecting one small table to do the work of several pieces of furniture. Personally, I love hosting, and I’ve found side tables, drinks tables, and C-shaped tables incredibly useful. I recommend them to clients all the time because they let the coffee table anchor the room visually, while the smaller pieces handle the practical side of things. IKEA’s UGGLERUM side table is a good example. It tucks neatly around the sofa, brings the surface closer, and saves you from having to size up the coffee table just for convenience.

That flexibility matters, especially if you host. Instead of everyone reaching across the room, you can bring a surface to wherever people are actually sitting. And even day-to-day, it makes life easier. Your coffee, laptop, book, or glass comes to you instead of the other way around.

There’s no shortage of side tables out there, that's for sure, but the pieces below are the ones I’d reach for because they can slot into almost any room and still work across a range of aesthetics.

Buying a sofa from an online-only retailer certainly has its upsides (convenience and cost, for starters), but also its downsides (you can't 'try before you buy'). Photos can show you the silhouette and pattern, but it's hard to get an honest feel for the fabric or even the color, as well as how supportive the back feels or whether the seat actually suits the way you sit.

I've shared my honest thoughts below, as well as shared some honourable mentions of other designs from DUSK's 400-strong sofa range that I wish I could have tried. The good news is that there are plenty of reviews online to go off, too.

Brooklyn Sofa

The Brooklyn collection was the one I found easiest to settle into. Its seat felt soft, with a more yielding feel than the other two sofas I tried. Its seat felt high and roomy, while the broad arms add to its generous, contemporary look. There’s plenty of space to sit back, and the deep seat makes it a good choice if you like to tuck your feet up or properly sink into a sofa.

DUSK lists the three-seater’s seat depth as 73cm, compared with 56cm for the Chicago — a difference you can feel when you try them side by side.

The back cushions give it a softer, more relaxed feel than a tightly upholstered sofa, while the overall shape still looks neat and modern. I’d choose it for a living room where comfort matters as much as having a sofa with a strong, simple silhouette.

It's also worth noting that it's available in a range of different configurations and in a few different colors: ivory, ink, muted moss, capuccino, chenille oatmeal, chenille olive, chenille mushroom, to name a few. The three-seater style is rated 4.92/5-stars after almost 900 reviews, too.

Chicago Sofa

The Chicago collection feels sleeker and more contained than the Brooklyn. Its arms are slimmer, and the seat feels tighter, so you sit more upright rather than sprawling out. The shorter seat depth — 56cm on the three-seater — helps explain that more supported feel. In terms of firmness, I’d place it at mid: supportive without feeling firm.

The back is the detail that gives it character — rounded, separate cushions soften the low, clean-lined frame. It looks polished without feeling too formal, and its proportions make it a good option if you want a contemporary sofa that doesn’t dominate the room. It’s comfortable, but you won’t sink into it in the same way as the Brooklyn.

It's also available in a range of configurations (including a pouffe) and in colors including beige, mushroom, rich green, 'gold haze', and dark rust. The two-seater style has a rating of 4.87/5 after 120 reviews.

Hampshire Sofa

Of the three, the Hampshire collection has the most traditional feel. Its softly shaped arms sit lower, and the seat and back felt more familiar and standard to me than the deeper, more lounging-focused Brooklyn. In terms of firmness, I’d describe it as mid-to-firm, with a more supportive sit than the other two. The back cushions create a classic sofa outline, while the legs and upholstery give the design a warmer, more timeless look.

It’s the one I’d look at if I wanted a sofa that would sit comfortably in a more traditional scheme, or add a softer note to a modern room. DUSK offers the Hampshire in a broad mix of colors and fabrics, including stripes and brighter shades, so the classic shape can be styled in a more playful way, too.

Honorable Mentions

I haven’t tried these styles in person, but they caught my eye for their different shapes, fabrics, and color options. Some of the same tones and upholstery looks appear across DUSK’s ranges, making it easier to compare a particular color or fabric across more than one silhouette.

Of the three, the Brooklyn sofa was my favorite. Its generous seat and broad arms made it the most comfortable to settle into, while its clean-lined shape still felt contemporary. My sofa might be the hardest-working piece of furniture in my living room. It hosts dinners, movie nights, reading hours, siestas... and the list goes on. And if you're like me, you've probably put off deep cleaning your couch due to its overwhelmingly arduous reputation.

However, after speaking to the experts, it's not as difficult as it's made out to be. It does take effort and has its own intricacies depending on the fabric you're dealing with, but these cleaning tips will help you make the most of your designer couches and sofas.

So, whether you're wondering how to get red wine out of your sofa, dry it after cleaning, or make it smell nice, here's everything you need to know.

How to Clean a Sofa

According to cleaning expert Marla Mock, you can clean most sofas with a simple five-step method. Here's what you'll need to do.

Step 1: Brush the Couch — First, Marla recommends prepping the couch by brushing it with a clean white hand towel or a stiff brush (like this Soft 100% Horsehair Upholstery Brush from Amazon or these Microfiber Cleaning Cloths from MR.SIGA). This will help loosen anything that has dried onto the sofa.

Step 2: Apply Baking Soda — "Next up, sprinkle the entire couch with baking soda, and let it sit for at least 20 minutes, up to an hour," she says. "Then, using a brush attachment, vacuum the couch to remove the baking soda." This Baking Soda from GrowChem and the Cyclone V10 Total Clean Vacuum from Dyson will come in handy.

Step 3: Make an All-Purpose Couch Cleaner — "While the baking soda sits on the couch, make this simple cleaner to tackle any remaining stains," says Marla. "Combine a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, a tablespoon of white vinegar, and a cup of warm water in a small spray bottle. Next, add one teaspoon of baking soda and quickly screw the top onto the spray bottle to prevent the reaction between the ingredients from making a mess." Step 4: Wipe — "Spray a white cloth with the cleaning solution, and gently dab and rub any stains on the fabric," she says. "Alternatively, you can wipe down the entire couch with the solution for a deep clean."

Step 5: Dry — Lastly, air it out and refrain from sitting on it for a few hours or until the sofa has completely dried out.

How Often to Clean a Sofa

Elizabeth Shields, a cleaning expert and the operations manager of Super Cleaning Service Louisville, says that it's best to deep clean your sofa once a season.

"I don’t vacuum my couch every day, but I do use a lint roller to grab pet hair," she adds. "Then every week, I do a quick pass with a vacuum cleaner just to make sure there are no bugs, and it gets some UV-C light. If you have sofa covers, then you only need to do a deep clean twice a year."

Similar to when you're tending to the rest of your couch, cleaning expert Tanu Grewal recommends brushing your pillows first. "This will tell you if your couch’s covers are suitable for the laundry or if they have to be washed by hand."

How to Clean Sofa Covers

According to Rocky Vuong, founder of Neatbrite, the most important preliminary step to cleaning sofa covers is to read the label. So what do the letters on your sofa tag actually mean?

'W' or 'WS' — Use water-based cleaning agents dedicated to upholstery.
'S' or 'SW' — Solvent cleaners are safe to use on the fabric.
'X' — Vacuum and light brush only. Avoid any solvent and water cleaners.

"If you can pop your sofa covers in the washing machine, avoid hot water as it can shrink and fade your fabric. Cold water is the way to go, unless specified otherwise," he advises. "I also recommend using mild detergent formulated for delicate materials. And instead of throwing it in the dryer, consider naturally air-drying indoors to preserve its quality."

How to Remove Red Wine Stains from a Sofa

Muffetta Krueger, founder of Muffetta’s Housekeeping, insists that with the right tools and method, it's possible to remove red wine from a couch.

"Acting promptly can prevent the red wine stain from setting deep into the fibers of your couch. Delays or improper cleaning can spread the stain or even damage the fabric. Always start stain removal as soon as the spill happens," says Muffetta. Depending on what you have at home and the severity of the stain, here's what you can do.

"Start by blotting the stain using a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Blot the stain to absorb as much red wine as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the stain deeper into the fabric," she warns.

"Then pour a small amount of cold water over the stain to dilute it and blot at it again. Next, you can apply a cleaning solution to it to help lift the stain."

The Dish Soap Method
For light stains, she recommends mixing mild dish soap with cold water. Then dip your cloth in the solution and slowly work at the stain.

The Baking Soda Method
"You can also combine baking soda with water to create a paste. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum the residue."

The White Wine Vinegar Method
Muffetta also recommends pouring white vinegar over the stain and blotting with a clean white cloth until the stain diminishes.

The Hydrogen Peroxide Method
"And lastly, you can also try mixing hydrogen peroxide with dish soap," says Muffetta. "Test on an inconspicuous area first. If safe, apply to the stain and blot gently."

What Should You Consider Based on the Type of Sofa?

How to Clean a Leather Sofa — "When cleaning a leather sofa, the key is to apply your cleaning solution to a cloth instead of spraying directly onto the surface. And it's equally important to wipe down the surface evenly," says Dionne Livingstone, cleaning expert at Home Spritz.

"Next, you should apply a leather conditioner, just as you did with the solution, by dipping it onto a cloth and wiping down the couch. Move through the sofa using the same top-left to bottom-right method until all sections of the sofa have been treated."

Last but not least, she recommends polishing your sofa for that fresh-from-a-gallery finish. "I'd wait for at least an hour before giving it a quick buffing with a cloth, and then you're done," Dionne adds. How to Clean a Linen Sofa — When it comes to taking care of a linen couch, it's important to avoid the typical sofa cleaning mistake of scrubbing the stain. This faux pas can damage the fabric and spread the stain. Instead, gently blot it, moving inwards.

How to Clean a Bouclé Sofa — Since this material is beloved for its looped texture, the key to preserving its volume is to use delicate and diluted detergent for spot treatment. It's also important to steer clear of drying it in direct or strong sun, as this can distort the fibers. Rather than using a brush to prepare the fabric for cleaning, lift off dirt and pet hair by carefully lint rolling or using a damp rubber glove to clean the surface.

How to Dry a Sofa After Cleaning

The key to properly drying a sofa is to thoroughly and repeatedly blot it with a clean, absorbent towel to speed up the drying process. Then, place it in a well-ventilated room and use a fan (like this Levoit Quiet Pedestal Fan from Amazon) to help it dry faster.

How to Make Your Sofa Smell Good

Being disciplined about regularly cleaning your sofa is always the golden rule. However, another way to make your couch smell fresh is to sprinkle it with baking soda. Then leave the baking soda to deodorize your sofa for 15 to 20 minutes and vacuum it up.

Although slightly tricky, sunning your sofa is another clever hack. But if that's not feasible, use room sprays to make your sofa smell amazing. "Couches with intricate designs — like curved sofas, tufting, or traditional details — are more time-consuming to work on, leading to higher labor costs. On the other hand, simple, modern designs tend to be easier and faster to reupholster, which can reduce labor costs."

And lastly, Ella explains that the age of the piece can be a significant factor. "Older furniture, while often well-constructed, may contain historical materials like horsehair or springs, which can complicate reconstruction."

Can You Use a Steam Cleaner on a Sofa?

If your sofa's tag reads 'W' or 'WS ', it's safe for water and steam cleaning. And if you don't have a steam cleaner at home, then you can try the viral TikTok hack for cleaning your couch that requires a laundry capsule, some hot water, a saucepan lid, and a microfiber cloth.

To start, add the capsule or a dash of liquid detergent to a large bowl of hot water, stirring until it dissolves. Next, wet your cloth in the solution and ring out the excess. Then lay the cloth out and place the pan lid over it, securing it in place with a knot at the top.

Then, you can simply swipe it over your sofa, remembering to get into every nook to get all the dirt out. Once done, you'll notice a surprising amount of grime trapped in your DIY cleaning tool.

How Do You Keep Sofa Cushions from Sagging?

Eventual wear and tear of a sofa might leave your cushions looking lifeless. To fix this, it's recommended that you fluff your sofas, rotate them, and switch your spot on the couch for a more even surface.

Can You Use Fabric Softener on a Sofa?

No, fabric softeners should not be used on sofas. They tend to leave a sticky residue and can damage the elasticity of the fabric. Instead, it's best to regularly clean your couch to keep it looking and feeling fresh.

How different can the shape of a sectional sofa really get? These are typically styles made for lounging, consuming a large amount of the room with the structural L-shape. But sometimes a space doesn't call for such a strong angle; the design style is more flowing, organic. But when you still want a sofa with ample seating, what shape are you left with? Well, an Art Nouveau home in Vienna has opted for a curved, 'bean shape' over the typical L, and it really works.

"The shape of the sofa was designed to 'soften' the irregular lines of the space and create a more harmonious sense of proportion," explains Yana Molodykh, the Ukrainian-based designer of this Viennese home. Rather than designing a room and picking a sofa style separately, the two were considered in tandem. The bean-shaped sofa's "curved silhouette echoes the wave-like form of the custom cabinet in the living room, while also recalling the flowing, whiplash line characteristic of Art Nouveau," says Yana.

So while the L-shaped sectional often works, sometimes it pays to think of the design of your room as a harmonious whole. Because sometimes, that tried-and-true sofa shape can read a bit clichéd when the room could really benefit from a touch of out-of-the-box design. Here's why the bean-shape makes for a more welcoming and cozy living room — and why it might just be the sofa trend for 2027.

What led the designer to veer away from a traditional L-shape? "I wanted the sofa to feel as though it belonged naturally to the architecture, almost continuing the movement of the room rather than introducing a contrasting, rigid form," Yana Molodykh explains.

She looked to the Art Nouveau design style when renovating this home, which played a part in this decision as well. A major part of Art Nouveau is movement and organic motifs, and a slight curve hints at both the traditional style while still feeling modern.

If you are working with other furniture, detailing, or shapes that have a natural movement to them, this sofa shape continues that conversation where an L-shape would cut through it. Plus, this bean shape is really great for small living room layouts: the softness gives off a gentleness of form, making for a more welcoming space without dominating the room.

That said, Yana says she wouldn't always choose a bean shape in place of a normal sectional sofa idea. Time and place are everything. For this space, "I wanted everything to flow from one element into another, almost as if the space were flowing from one vessel into the next," she explains. "The soft forms and rounded corners create this sense of continuity, allowing the different elements to connect naturally rather than feeling separate or rigid."

"That is why I would choose these softer, more organic forms over a sofa with sharper lines — the curves help maintain the fluid language of the entire interior," Yana adds. If you have a more linear space, then perhaps a bean-shaped sofa wouldn't be as harmonious.

All in all, this shape shows that there are no strict living room design rules that you have to follow. If you are in the market for a large sofa, a clunky sectional isn't your only option. Introducing a curved chaise that resembles a bean, provides ample seating, and ample style.

Sorry, I know that only makes the decision harder, but what is perhaps more helpful is sharing a few trusty sofa-and-rug color combinations that are dependably stylish.

Rather than over-analyzing what comes first, the sofa or the rug, think of the color conversation these two pieces are having in a room. "I tend to look at this question from a different angle because I don't see sofa and rug colors as fixed combinations," Craig Gritzen, founder of Los Angeles-based interior design studio, Curated Style Collective, explains. Instead, "The relationship between these items, and how they interact with light and other materials in the room, drives the direction for me," he adds.

As mentioned, sofas and rugs occupy a huge amount of visual space in a living room. "Contrast and color undertones between the items are a great way to create tension instead of being perfectly matched," says Craig. "This tension creates visual interest and helps the space feel curated instead of staged." And with that in mind, these are a few failsafe combinations to start with.

1. Red and Blue

Sofa color trends are heading in a more adventurous direction this year, so let's start bold, shall we? Red and blue can be a really rewarding rug-and-sofa color combination. First of all, they are both timeless, primary colors, so they will always feel classic in a room. Plus, they balance each other near perfectly in terms of warm versus cool colors.

"I'm always considering how I balance color within a scheme," says interior designer Jessica Horton, founder of Deorling Studio. "In a warm space like the space pictured above, "Introducing a cooler note, such as a soft blue, helps bring the palette into balance. It's a subtle shift, but one that creates a sense of harmony and makes the whole room feel almost effortless," the designer explains.

2. Earthy Brown and Muted Olive

In light of current color trends and 2027's color of the year predictions so far, it's no surprise that designers love a brown-and-green moment for rugs and sofas. And this is another combination where you can really play with the tones, tints, hues, and shades to find a green-and-brown duo that works for your space.

Plus, this combination works well since both colors are rooted in nature. "This pairing works well for people who prefer a sense of calm in their living space," says Craig Gritzen. Even if you lean into a punchy green color trend on your rug, the contrast of the brown upholstery will balance the relationship. "Camel or tobacco upholstery creates warmth and plays well with natural light, while the olive feels grounding and gives the room depth without feeling excessively colorful," adds Craig.

And don't forget the rest of the room. "This relationship works even better when the materials introduce texture, like mohair or bouclé, with supportive elements like walnut and aged brass," the designer adds.

3. Ivory and Umber

White sofas are a classic choice, but without a darker rug underneath to ground the look, it can often fall flat in a room. That's where ivory and umber make for a more contemporary pairing. "This combination allows the sofa to be visually calm and supportive when a bold rug color is selected to create the atmosphere," says Craig.

Yet, once again, "The key to getting this color combination right is to focus on undertone," says Craig. A warm ivory next to a burnt umber both have warm undertones, and therefore create a more balanced contrast in the design. Though "If you were to set a bright white sofa with a cool undertone on a warm umber rug, they would feel disconnected because the undertones are fighting each other," says Craig.

Then don't be afraid to dress up the space with textures and tactile materials for the ultimate cozy living room. "This combination works well with layering in oak, handmade ceramics, and a cooler undertone accent like dusty blue to balance out the warmth," adds Craig.

4. Camel, Cognac, and Oatmeal

The next sofa-and-rug color pairing that designers love is more tonal, so color-drenching lovers listen up. Nisrine El Lababidi, founder and creative director of Harf Noon Design Studio, says, "I love a camel/cognac sofa paired with an oatmeal brown rug. It's probably one of the most timeless living room color combinations." And it's a very adaptable sofa-and-rug combination if you are prioritizing building a stylish base.

Decorating with neutrals like camel and cognac already brings a lot of warmth, so a quieter rug keeps the room sophisticated rather than an overly earthy," says Nisrine. It's almost a reverse of the previous sofa and rug combination — here the sofa adds character and color, while the rug brings a polished, classic aesthetic.

5. Pink and Brown

Lastly, designers are loving pink tones with brown on sofas and rugs. Think dusty, earthy pinks and delicious chocolate brown. Not only is pink becoming one of the hottest autumnal colors, but as Nisrine says, "The deeper color, like chocolate brown, on the sofa grounds the space, while the rug introduces warmth and character. It feels rich and collected rather than overly coordinated."

However, you aren't strictly tied to dusty pink and brown — crank the pink up to a terracotta red or oxblood, or tune the chocolate brown down into a mushroom. "Oxblood is one of my favorite colors to use," says Craig, "and a sofa in this color creates a strong point of view that is best paired with a rug in oatmeal, mushroom, or a faded flax." Any variation of pinkish-red tones with brown works as long as you balance the right undertones.

"This combination also feels sophisticated and allows you to pull in brown, clay, or even a slight green undertone in the rug or supporting elements to help the space feel warm and enveloping instead of flat," adds Craig.

Picking your sofa-and-rug color combination is not always about blindly following rug trends or the most popular sofa colors; it's about building a harmonious color scheme that lets you keep developing your decor.

A good sofa is something that you build a room around. It becomes both the centerpiece of the space visually and the way you interact with it. And while the basic structure of a sofa stays pretty uniform across design, interior design trends are leaning more towards interesting silhouettes, even over texture and color.

So, I've been keeping my eyes peeled for sofas that bring something new and different to your living room landscape, and have found a new favorite in S-CAB's Brezza Relax sofa collection. It's a rare design idea that somehow feels super structured and sculptural, while also quite relaxed — like it's been formed from cushions piled up on the floor, but, you know, in an elegant way.

So yes, it's a blend of contemporary sofa trends (a generous, multifunctional form with subtle texture) and relaxed, livable comfort. But beyond the initially captivating, high-end design, this S-Cab sofa also has a curious multifunctional detail: an integrated side table right between the seat cushions to hold a chic cocktail or warm beverage while lounging. Now that's something everyone wants in their living space.

This design started its life as an outdoor sofa, but now makes a very convincing argument for bringing one of the brand's most successful chairs indoors. The deconstructed character and oversized form create a strong visual form on their own.

For instance, "I'd start with a large, textured or embossed rug in a warm neutral — something with a subtle pattern or irregular weave to bring depth underneath the very clean lines of the sofa," shares Iokasti. From there, "I'd introduce a few pieces with stronger sculptural forms, perhaps a low stone or travertine element, alongside a single oversized ceramic or glass object on the integrated table," she adds.

They say the best form of flattery is imitation, but as an interiors journalist and someone whose family has been in the business of furniture for years, I’m not so convinced when it comes to our homes.

A quick search online is all it takes to reveal heaps of convincing dupes ‘inspired’ by design classics — from the iconic Eames lounge chair created by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956 to the famed Noguchi coffee table conceived by Isamu Noguchi in 1944 — as well as more recent creations including the Cloud couch by Timothy Oulton from Restoration Hardware ("often imitated, never duplicated") and now, the TEDDY™ sofa by OMHU. Indeed, the dupe industry is huge — there are dedicated retailers, and it's estimated to be worth $1.79 trillion by 2030. But at what cost?

This week, in an unprecedented move to counteract the countless imitations of its popular boneless, modular foam design, Danish sofa brand OMHU launched a dupe of its own sofa — deliberately misspelled as TEDY™ in a familiar orange colorway — with a limited-edition run of 100 across Temu, Etsy, and dupe.com, retailing for just £599.99 instead of the usual £1,495. The knock-offs sold out in under 10 minutes, but the underlying message lingers.

Livingetc's stance is simple: we respect design and don't and won't ever knowingly write about duped furniture, as they're copies of someone else’s creative work, often made abroad, cheaply, with poor working conditions and a negative environmental impact. Also, 'dupe' furniture just tends to look cheap.

The same principles of ‘fast fashion’ can apply to ‘fast furniture’. It’s why Michelle Ogundehin, the writer and presenter of the TV show Interior Design Masters, spearheaded the ‘Equal Rights for Design’ campaign (backed by interiors powerhouses Sir Terence Conran and Sir James Dyson) to highlight the disparity between the UK copyright protection for designed items and the creation of art, music, or literature.

OMHU's Iconic Dupe campaign, which turned design copying into the creative idea, also involved working with celebrity ‘dupefluencers’ and gifting the real deal to influencers who already owned knockoffs of its sofa for side-by-side comparisons.

“Getting duped is iconic as only design icons get copied at this scale,” explains Alexander Morabbi Wulsh, CMO at the Copenhagen-based company. Creative director Christine Smith adds: “Normally, you’d just report dupes or ignore them, but we spotted a creative opportunity to create global awareness, so we made our own to make fun of the competition while still proving that we’re the OG of sofas.”

But it wasn’t all PR spin. At the heart of the idea was a viral showcase of the original sofa that inspired thousands of fakes and a solid case for why it’s still worth investing in, from its original design to its quality craftsmanship. That, and a timely reminder as we all try to keep up with social media's rapid trend cycle...

There's lots to love about boneless sofas, even if they don't have the shape-shifting capabilities of OMHU's TEDDY™ — particularly the fact that without any internal framework, they can fit in all kinds of spaces.

As sunset creeps earlier with every autumn evening, movie nights are firmly back on the agenda — and so are the squabbles over the best seat on the sofa. Before you try to deny it, I know it’s true: it’s always the one with the footrest. That’s why I’m rather taken with IKEA’s spacious modular UPPÅKRA sofa, which, when pushed together, creates a design-y 70s-style conversation pit where everyone gets the best spot.

Though it’s one of the newer IKEA sofas, the versatility of UPPÅKRA means it is quickly shaping up to be one of the big-box brand’s most compelling, thanks to its sink-in cushioning and boundless adaptability. The modules can be arranged as a two-seater, three-seater, L-shape, U-shape, or even a complete square, meaning you can adapt the sofa to your room rather than the other way around.

Now, this isn’t a conversation pit in the traditional sunken sense — a hallmark of mid-century modern interiors. But that might be for the best: there’s no need to start digging into your living room’s foundations to achieve a cozy, sociable impact.

Conversation pits rose to prominence in the 70s, mostly in the US, championed by maverick architect Eero Saarinen and designer Alexander Girard. They’re enjoying something of a revival now, albeit in less architecturally demanding ways. Part of the appeal is obvious: they’re deeply comfortable and carry all the retro appeal of mid-century interiors. But the face-to-face layout of these sunken spaces also encourages a more social way of sitting, which feels particularly appealing in an age of digital fatigue and the growing appetite for a more analog way of life.

The three-seat UPPÅKRA offers a subtle nod to that shape, but its modularity lets you take the idea much further. Expand it into an L- or U-shape for a more enveloping arrangement, then use the UPPÅKRA footstool to fill the gaps and create one sprawling surface for all-out reclining. Or leave the middle open, preserving that distinctive face-to-face layout. Either way, the best seat in the house might finally be everyone’s.

While these modular pit sofas prioritize reclining, the true purpose of a conversation pit was always connection. While these U-shaped options are still oriented towards a television at one end, traditional closed pits (popular pre-smartphones) are more analog, leaving screens on the outside of their sunken boundaries.

If you are not quite ready to dispose of your telly, delve even deeper into the archives and consider a separate conversation room: a space dedicated to gathering, chatting and connecting, emerging out of 18th century Paris as a salon.

Here's a hot tip: If you're furnishing a small living room, check out Castlery's sofas. The Singaporean-founded brand knows a thing or two about small-space living (around 80% of the population lives in flats rather than free-standing houses), which is why most of its sofas are modular, come in a range of configurations, and some even conceal storage.

The online sofa brand (though it sells way more than just that) may be relatively new to the UK, but it's been a stalwart in Australia for years and has grown exponentially since launching in the US back in 2019. Earlier this year, I was flown to NYC to preview Tan France's collaboration with Castlery, and while I was there, I took the opportunity to sit on every sofa in the city's breezy, new showroom.

My biggest takeaway from Castlery is that the brand is all about ease. Its furniture is designed to be easy to live with; there is a limited choice of fabric colors — mostly neutrals — to reduce decision fatigue (the designers know what you really want); and it's simple to shop online and have it delivered straight to your home (and most of the time, for free).

Another thing I like about the sofa-buying process at Castlery is that you can filter the website by sofa length, seat depth, height, and softness (all important sofa dimensions to consider), as well as dispatch times and fabric choices — again, it just makes everything so easy.

And while I didn't get to sit on all 17 of Castlery's sofa styles, I did get to sit on quite a few, including its best-sellers, and these were my six favorites (and why).

Auburn

This was the first style that caught my eye in the Castlery showroom — its curvaceous form feels very aligned with current sofa trends. It's mostly available in a 'Chalk' bouclé performance fabric, but some sections also come in a chambray-look 'Basalt' fabric (pictured above). The biggest selling point is that it comes in 16 different configurations. In particular, the slightly curved style (which you can also choose with or without arms) is cool. It might not be the best use of space, but if you've got the room, curved sofas do tend to look more expensive when they peel off the wall slightly.

I sat on the standard three-seater style. The back was quite firm and supportive (quite upright), but the seat was bouncy. Definitely not a sofa you'd sink into, but I could imagine it being great for people who host a lot (it's more of a sitting/conversing sofa than one you'd sink into). It also comes with two loose throw pillows, which is nice for styling and adding a bit of extra softness.

Agnes

If you're a fan of classic slipcover sofas, you'll like Agnes. It's the kind of classic style that would look just as good in a modern home as it would in a more traditional interior. The fabric looked a little more... relaxed in-store than it does online, but I like the single-seat cushion and that it comes in four different colors (Caramel, Dark Gray, Dusty Blue, and Cream). You can also remove the covers for washing or to switch out for another color.

But the part that really sold me was when the store assistant lifted the seat to reveal hidden storage beneath (see the second image above). Available in both straight and L-shaped configurations, this sofa had one of the smallest footprints of those I tried, and would work especially well in smaller homes — the added storage only reinforcing that fact.

Comfort-wise, it felt quite upright with medium-firm seats, so good if you're looking for something quite supportive. I'd say this is a great option for young families (especially those with pets), as you can build it out with added sections as your family grows, refresh the covers when needed, and hide clutter underneath.

Jaron

If the showroom staff hadn't told me that this was a recliner sofa, I honestly wouldn't have known, and that should say a lot. Its plump silhouette and feather-filled cushions are sink-in squishy and cleverly conceal the controls (you run your hand between the inside of the armrest and the seat to find a button — yes, it was a bit fiddly and didn't work at first, but once you know where it is and the amount of pressure required, I think you'll appreciate its discreetness).

In terms of the recline, it goes very, very far back, to the point where you wouldn't be able to see a screen in front of you (unless it was on the ceiling), so great if you're after the feature for circulation. Cleverly, the way the chair rotates is also forward, so you don't need to leave space behind it like old-fashioned recliners (a particularly good thing, as the back of this sofa isn't very aesthetic, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're planning to float it in the middle of a room).

As for the upholstery, the tan-colored leather I sat on was buttery soft, but it also comes in an off-white textured performance fabric that's spill-resistant. In terms of configurations, there's the standard three-seater and an 'extended' three-seater, as well as two L-shapes and an armchair. It's got a pretty deep seat, and you can also choose between wide or narrow armrests, depending on your preference or the size of your space, which I thought was a particularly nice detail.

I really, really liked the look and feel of this sofa. Upright, it's got quite a low profile, but once you start reclining, the headrest folds up to support your neck, and then it's as if you're floating on a cloud. The only downside was that there were some technical issues getting the seat to recline initially, but I find that often tends to be the way with anything 'smart', and it could also have been the fact that it was in a showroom and not always plugged in.

Jonathan

There is something quite smart-looking about the Jonathan sofa. It's boxy and sits quite low to the ground, which helps to anchor it in the space. But sit on it, and you may be surprised by how soft and squishy it actually is, especially the backrest. I also quite like how it goes all the way to the ground, as opposed to having feet, but I like a quite weighty-looking sofa.

The Castlery staff tell me this style is a best-seller, and I'm not surprised. It's available in three fabrics — the creamy white performance fabric seen above, as well as a gray and 'moss' twill fabric — and two brown leathers. The exaggerated seams also make it feel a bit more design-y.

There are 15 configurations available, but I really liked the one on the showroom floor, which is open and extended on one end. It felt particularly social, and would be good for flow if you've got an open-plan space, or if you're planning to float it in the room as a sofa island. Someone could also easily perch on the armrests while you're entertaining (they're super wide and also squishy-soft).

Kagan by Tan France

As I mentioned, I was flown to NYC for the launch of Tan France's collaboration with Castlery, which included the Kagan sofa. It's available in a 'caramel' or 'cream' basketweave fabric, as well as a 'moss' or 'cocoa' leather. I initially had a strong reaction to the words 'green leather', but honestly, coupled with the timber detailing, I was really impressed. It's a really deep, rich green, which I can only imagine will patina beautifully. My favorite, however, was the 'caramel' basketweave — it's an almost khaki-brown in-between shade thanks to its chambray-like weave, which already feels soft and lived-in.

The timber detailing itself gives the piece a heritage-like feel, and speaks to Tan's unique cultural perspective (though I imagine many others will be able to relate, too). The etching is inspired by patterns found throughout South Asian design, while the 'pillars' nod to British architecture.

It is modular and comes in 14 configurations, including a footstool, and will be shipped within three days.

Mori

The Mori Sofa is Castlery's lowest and deepest sofa, and it's quickly becoming a best-seller in the UK. It's so deep, in fact, that if you were to remove the back cushions, it could almost act as a single bed for guests.

Aesthetically speaking, it has a very Japandi style, thanks to its timber floating platform base. I particularly liked this sofa for all the different configurations (15 in total) and add-ons available, especially the low-profile Mori Side Table that extends the base when you opt for an armless design. You can also choose between two wood finishes ('Natural' and 'Walnut') and two neutral fabric colors ('Alpine' and 'Oat').

In terms of squishiness, I'd rate this as medium-soft, though Castlery classifies it as very soft. Perhaps it has something to do with the timber platform. That said, it's certainly not uncomfortable.

Ultimately, I think the biggest selling point of this sofa is the multitude of configurations you can choose from, which allows you to really make the most of whatever space you've got and how you like to lounge.

Honourable Mentions

Castlery doesn't have any showrooms in the UK (yet!), so if you'd prefer something you can 'try before you buy', John Lewis' sofas are very popular for good reason.

A beautiful sofa is the jewel in the crown of your living room — a focal point that draws the eye and a social hub around which everyone gathers, whether to kick back and relax or host drinks and nibbles.

Because of its importance in the home, both aesthetically and practically, it’s a real investment (especially as it’s something you don't want to replace every year), so it’s essential to choose a sofa style that’s right the first time. And, sorry to say, it's not just as simple as knowing where to buy a sofa.

We ask the experts how to pick the right sofa — with key considerations including everything from the size to its shape and fabric — to help you do just that. Here's what they shared.

How to Choose the Right Sofa Size

There’s a sofa for every space and taste, from compact, armless styles for tight or awkward rooms, to five-seater and modular designs for large or open-plan layouts — not to mention different combinations to help you create somewhere that’s as comfortable as it is convivial.

It sounds obvious, but the best place to start really is the size your lifestyle requires, and the room can accommodate. “I often think people go too small with sofas when a generous one can actually make a room feel much more comfortable and well-balanced," says Claire Sá, co-founder of De Rosee Sa, the architecture and design studio. "Consider the depth of a sofa and how the space will be used — too deep, and it can be extremely uncomfortable in a more formal environment, for example — then measure its footprint to visualize the proportions. I recommend leaving at least 45cm between the ottoman and coffee table, with breathing room around side tables. A well-sized sofa should feel integrated into the space rather than squeezed in.”

How to Choose the Right Sofa Shape

Shape follows size, advises Claire, who also designs her own sofas as part of her practice. “A straight design is incredibly versatile and can even be placed at the end of a bed or in a narrow hallway if smaller in size, while a corner or modular style works well when you want a relaxed arrangement," she says. "Likewise, a low-profile sofa can be equally sociable, while a shallower one will feel more formal.”

The designer warns against curved sofas as, despite their contemporary look, they can make other furniture placement quite tricky.

My advice, as an interiors journalist? From fixed to modular, traditional to trendy, choose a design that’s true to your style and suits your needs, rather than chase fleeting here-today, gone-tomorrow trends. In my living room, I’ve gone for a country-house design with a timeless form and enduring colorway that’ll look as good down the line as it does today — in fact, the more battered, the better.

How to Choose the Right Sofa Fabric

“When choosing a fabric for your sofa, after determining the size and shape, the first thing to think about is durability,” explains Micaela Sharp, the specialist upholsterer behind her eponymous company. “If the sofa is going to be used frequently by the entire family, then a fabric with a high Martindale score — a test that scratches the fabric until the first thread breaks — is a good option. A score of 20,000 is low and suitable for headboards or chairs in less-used rooms, while over 200,000 is high and perfect for the main sofa in a high-traffic living space.”

Different materials such as wool, linen, cotton, and blended fabrics should also be considered, Michaela suggests, with natural fibers best in terms of performance and being able to wash and steam when required.

The upholsterer does point out that the majority of modern sofa fabrics are blended, however, which ensures the fibers are more hardwearing. “If you’ve got kids or pets and are concerned about spills and scuffs, you could also opt for a stain-resistant finish on the fabric,” she adds. “This ensures liquids do not seep in and that you can wipe them away with a cloth, but it does mean that the covers aren’t washable. This finish also uses a lot of chemicals, so the more sustainable option is to go for natural fibers that can be washed and a patterned fabric to conceal any marks.”

If you're concerned about sustainability, there are many factors to consider when looking for a sofa that uses eco-friendly fabrics. Delyth Fetherston-Dilke, a sustainable furniture consultant who advises interior clients such as Lorfords Contemporary on low-toxicity sofa builds, says: “Our indoor atmosphere is more toxic than outdoors in part due to certain chemical treatments on things like sofas and floors becoming airborne due to volatile chemicals, wear, or abrasion.”

Most sofas are built with foam made from petrochemicals, explains Delyth, with the foam treated with chemical flame retardants to adhere to strict UK flammability requirements that don’t apply in the rest of Europe or the US. And now, fabrics have ever-more ‘performance’ specs — flame-resistant, stain-resistant, anti-microbial, anti-crease — each bringing another chemical treatment.

“To avoid unnecessary exposure to toxins in your home, avoid fabrics that offer these characteristics; look for a sofa built from natural fibers with a wool or natural cover together with a wool interliner," she says. "Better still, work with an upholsterer to rebuild an existing piece in a natural fabric you adore with a natural filling.”

How to Choose a Quality Sofa

We’ve talked about the bits you can see on your sofa, but what about the bits you can’t, such as the frame? Interior design expert Alex Dauley thinks it’s the most important part. “We can all be seduced by beautiful upholstery and a lovely shape, but if you’re investing in something that you’re going to sit on every day for years to come, you need to understand what’s beneath it,” she says. “Look for strength, good construction, and stability. Traditionally, a well-made hardwood frame has always been a marker of quality, but engineered steel frames offer incredible consistency and longevity without the natural movement you get with timber.”

King Living, the Australian furniture company that Alex is a fan of and has used in many client projects, features these frames and comes with a 25-year warranty, an indication of how seriously the business takes its internal construction.

Alex also suggests that suspension — something we don’t think about until a sofa begins to sag — has a huge impact on comfort and how long it lasts. There are two kinds: springs and wadding. “The latter can work perfectly well when it’s high quality and properly tensioned, while the former can give a more structured and responsive feel," she says. "I’m less interested in saying one system is universally better than another and more interested in how the whole sofa has been engineered to work together. Ultimately, you want support that feels comfortable when you first sit down but will perform exactly the same way after years of everyday use.”

When it comes to the quality of cushion fillings, it’s all about how you like to live, Alex tells me. “Feather gives you that wonderfully soft, relaxed, sink-in feeling, but it needs plumping and looking after. Foam provides more structure and shape retention, while fiber gives softness without as much maintenance. Personally, I prefer a combination rather than one material doing all the work, with different layers and densities giving you initial softness with enough support.”

Upholsterer Michaela agrees. “I like half-way house with foam wrapped in feather. It gives you the structure of the former with the fluffiness of the latter — and without the daily zhuzhing. Naturally, over time, all cushions will get softer, so do bear this in mind!”

In terms of the level of comfort different sofa heights and depths afford, she urges you to be honest with yourself about how you usually sit or lie on a sofa. “A low back will offer less support but might look better in the space. If you're a lounger, like me, a higher back and deeper seat depth offers the most space to relax. If you prefer sitting upright, the height of the arm will be important for your comfort. These measurements will be relative to the depth of the cushions around them as well, so it's best to test the sofa in a showroom when you can.”

How to Choose the Right Sofa Color

Finally, what about color? “Neutral sofas always feel timeless and can be layered with lots of other shades and textures in cushions and throws,” explains Chess Darby, the co-founder of Darby Holmes, the integrated build and design company. Better still, she reveals, they give you the flexibility for changing things up down the line in soft furnishings and fun accessories, although they do tend to show stains and marks more easily — "especially if you’ve got pets and children."

Chess advises that a colorful sofa can be like the bow on top of a present, tying the room together while leaving plenty of opportunity for layering patterns and textures on top. “They’re more forgiving when it comes to concealing kids’ mucky fingers,” she adds, “and if you have a neutral room, you can use the sofa as a hero accent.”

And how about patterns? “They do a lot of the heavy-lifting in a room, just like adding a jazzy jacket to a plain outfit,” Chess says. “They’re also great for pulling in lots of the colors elsewhere in your scheme and are the most forgiving in hiding a multitude of sins. Choosing a sofa is surely among the most important design decisions you'll make for your home, but it's one that presents lots of questions. Should the filling be foam, fiber, or feathers? Is a longer silhouette better for stretching out? How deep is too deep? With the rise of modular styles and the popularity of mix-and-match sectionals, though, there’s another one worth asking — should your sofa have arms?

Armless designs are one of this year’s top sofa trends. While it might feel relatively insignificant compared to choosing a color or picking upholstery, opting for arms (or leaving them out) impacts so much more than simply looks. Comfort, circulation, and space all come into play, too. “As designers, we’re now thinking much more deliberately about whether arms are actually necessary,” explains Nomad’s Jack Simpson.

So, should your sofa have arms? Take a seat and let’s discuss.

When Should a Sofa Have Arms?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, arms help to make a sofa feel complete. This makes them a wise choice for standard-sized designs, as opposed to sprawling modular configurations that can seat ten or twelve.

“Arms work particularly well on standalone two- or three-seater sofas,” agrees Marcelina Janizewska, head of interior design at Project London. “They give sofas a clear beginning and end, making them feel more finished.”

This definition makes a sofa with arms ideal in rooms where the piece becomes your focal point. “Arms give a sofa presence, allowing it to anchor a room,” explains interior designer Portia Fox. They also create a feeling of enclosure, making a sofa feel like more of a standalone destination in your space.

“Arms provide a sense of embrace,” Portia adds. “They give you somewhere to lean or nestle, which is particularly worthwhile in rooms where you seek comfort or want a feeling of retreat.” In other words, a sofa with arms adds intimacy and creates a cocooning spot worth settling into. One quick caveat? Don’t automatically assume you have to go for arms on both sides.

When Does an Armless Sofa Make Sense?

If the benefit of having arms on your sofa is defining it and making it the anchor of your room, then taking them away helps to loosen up your floor plan. “Armless designs are particularly successful where space and circulation are important,” explains Jack Simpson, creative director at Nomad. “Removing arms reduces visual weight, meaning even a substantial sofa can feel noticeably lighter.”

This allows armless styles to work well in open-concept spaces as well as in rooms used for different purposes throughout the day. “They give you more freedom, especially when you don’t want the piece to create a hard divide,” agrees Jack, who regularly uses modular designs in his projects. “Leaving these armless allows you to extend the sofa with another module, or use individual sections almost as separate pieces of furniture. This flexibility is ideal in contemporary interiors, where one rigid furniture arrangement feels impractical.”

Of course, not all armless sofas are modular and you don’t need a particularly large design to gain the benefits. “Without arms, a sofa becomes less prescriptive and allows you to create a more informal mood,” explains Stephen Nash, the London-based interior designer and founder of All & Nxthing.

Visually, a silhouette without arms strikes a fresher, more contemporary note that influences how the piece actually gets used. Armless sofas tend to offer more relaxed, varied uses rather than being somewhere exclusively reserved for sinking into. “You can sit on one from different directions, perch on the end, and let the sofa become part of how you use a space rather than just an object sitting within it,” says Stephen.

How Do You Make an Armless Sofa Work?

When you remove something, there’s always a danger that you’ll end up compensating for it — don’t. Make the remaining elements more beautiful instead.

“The key is to make a feature of the details that remain on your sofa, rather than trying to disguise the lack of arms,” explains Carina Raymond, founder of Studio Raymond. “Beautiful upholstery and interesting detailing on seat cushions can make an armless sofa feel very deliberate and designed, rather than as though something has been left off.”

Think about what you would use sofa arms for, and then aim for a more useful alternative — the arm of a velvet sofa isn’t the best place to perch a wine glass, say, and it wasn’t designed to hold a paperback or your phone either.

“We like pairing armless sofas with low tables, occasional tables, ottomans, and other pieces of furniture that can provide some of the functions an arm traditionally would,” explains Studio Muka’s Neda Kakhsaz and Zabie Mustafa, who created the space above.

Making those pieces work seamlessly with your sofa is key — without arms, a sofa opens up to its surroundings. “An armless sofa needs to feel like part of a larger composition,” the pair agree. “The relationship with the furniture around it becomes especially important as the room provides a sense of structure that would otherwise come from the arms. A small table pulled tightly against the sofa, for example, creates a useful edge while keeping the overall arrangement open and flexible.”

Whether you’re in the market for a form-led sofa or want to know exactly what makes a sofa look expensive, considering whether or not to go for arms is key. While they give a sofa a sense of definition and make a standalone piece a focal point, taking them away and going for an armless sofa opens up your space in a very contemporary way.

A month or so ago, I was invited to preview John Lewis' upcoming autumn/winter collection, and finally, the pieces I saw are starting to trickle into stores. Its design speaks to John Lewis' history with textiles and traditional craftsmanship. Because what says craft quite like smart tailoring? "The box pleat skirt delivers that classic heritage silhouette, while the choice of fabric makes it versatile for today’s interiors," David shares. "By softening modern hard lines, it brings warmth, authenticity, and a lived-in elegance to contemporary living spaces," he adds.

Better yet, considering this John Lewis sofa is available as a 'snuggler', two- or three-seater (as well as a complementary footstool), it's perfect for compact spaces, while its high arms and backrest make it feel warm and comforting; this is a sofa that hugs you.

Your sofa is one of the most major investments you're likely to make when furnishing your home, and it should succeed in both anchoring your space and matching the tone for the scheme of your room. Though importantly, it should have longevity; it needs to stand the test of time, not just in comfort and quality but visually too.

Of course, there are ways to update the look of your couch: you can reupholster a long-loved style, or mix up the color of cushions and throws to reinvent the aesthetic — but the silhouette is the one thing you can't change. And 2026's biggest sofa trends seem to confirm something: the back height is important. Whether it's embellished, armless, or sculptural, most of this year's most popular styles have a low profile.

So is a low-back sofa integral to making your living room look current? And will a high-profile instantly date your home? We asked some of our favorite interior and sofa designers to weigh in. (Plus, they share how to decide on the right sofa profile for your room, and the styling tricks you can steal to ensure your scheme feels contemporary.)

Is Your Sofa's Height Dating Your Room?

The answer to this question can depend on your personal aesthetic. Before you rule out a high-back sofa entirely, or consider replacing your existing one, ask yourself what 'mood' you want to create.

“High-back sofas tend to lend themselves more naturally to a traditional sitting room," says Zoe Bailey, associate director at MoreySmith. "They can create a sense of formality and enclosure."

Natasha Lyon, founder of design studio Appreciation Project, agrees. "While I don't think a high-back sofa would necessarily date a room (if it were in a desirable fabric choice), it is definitely a 'proper' look, as it's designed to make you sit up straight. I think a lower-backed sofa is a lot more relaxed in spirit."

So if your home's vibe is laid-back or modern, then yes, says Zoe, a low-profile sofa will lend itself better to the overall look. "They feel much more suited to the open, informal way we live in our homes today,” she adds.

Does the Size of Your Room Matter?

Zoe of StudioMorey thinks low-back sofas create a "comfortable yet contemporary feel," no matter the room, and uses them wherever possible, whatever the footprint.

One of the style's biggest benefits is the fact that they make a space feel fluid and open, she says. "Particularly when you have the space to position the sofa away from the walls rather than around the perimeter of a room."

Though by virtue of their height, they lend themselves to compact spaces, too. Take the room by Appreciation Project pictured above, which features a King Living modular sofa bed. "It was perfect for getting up tight hallways," says Natasha. "Plus, as it's modular, we could create it to fit perfectly around the eaves and sloping ceiling of this top-floor room and make it look made to measure."

A low sofa is a more versatile choice than a high-back due to how it fits around the architecture of a room, notes Jodie Hazlewood of The House Upstairs, a handmade furniture brand. "A low sofa keeps sightlines open below cornicing and windows, so a room with those features doesn't feel visually cut in half, and more wall and floor stay visible, which makes a space feel larger," she adds.

This also applies to the choice of artwork and carpentry, which can be larger in scale without grappling for wall space with the sofa.

Annie Harrison, founder of Fare Inc., agrees: "A low-back sofa lets the architecture lead," she says. "They're versatile to live with, as a lower back means the sofa can float in the middle of a room or divide a space without blocking sightlines or natural light. They also tend to suit modular, low-slung spaces better, since a tall back can make a room with low ceilings or beams feel more cramped than cozy."

If you're ready to invest in a new sofa and want it to last for years to come, Jodie stresses the importance of paying close attention to the details that give it its structure, as well as the materials. "Choose one with a fixed back as it holds its shape without needing daily plumping," the sofa designer explains. "Covered feet stand up to everyday use rather than needing constant cleaning."

As well as durability and choosing the right sofa color for your scheme, consider your lounging style. If you like to lie down on the sofa, choose padded arms. If you have kids, deep, well-filled cushions that hold their shape are important for surviving all the climbing.

Another important factor, according to Run For The Hills co-founder and interior designer Anna Burles, is the rake (the angle of the backrest). "If it’s too upright or firm, it feels odd," she says. "When choosing sofas or making them bespoke for our projects, they need just enough give to be comfortable and just enough back height support that you'd happily kick back and watch a movie."

If you want an even cozier feel, consider adding a matching ottoman, footstool, or pouffe that'll allow you to sink in. "It's the ideal comfort if you want to indulge, take the weight off and relax," says Natasha.

If you're plumping for a low-back sofa, the size and position of the finishing touches and the furniture you surround it with need to be carefully chosen.

As Annie of Fare Inc. explains: "Low sofas need a bit of help holding their own, so scale and texture become key. Go big with the coffee table. Consider a chunky black marble block that anchors the low seating, and use lighting to reintroduce height into the room, a sculptural pendant or a tall floor lamp doing the job the sofa back would otherwise have done."

As for soft furnishings, comforting touches are key on a long or modular low sofa, says Natasha. "A cozy, textured throw is a must, alongside a few carefully chosen cushions. We often introduce velvet or a geometric pattern to add interest and break up the expanse of fabric of a plain sofa, while still keeping the overall look relaxed and considered," she suggests.

Small spaces definitely make you more selective about what you bring into them, and the sofa is usually the biggest decision. If one piece is going to take up that much of the room, I want it to feel properly comfortable and have some presence, without everything else suddenly feeling squeezed around it. That’s why I don’t think a compact sofa is simply a smaller sofa. The good ones are much smarter with their proportions: slimmer arms give more space back to the seat, shallower frames leave you room to move, and raised bases let you see more of the floor, which instantly makes the whole piece feel lighter.

And this is where I always bring out the masking tape. Before you buy a sofa, mark out the footprint on the floor and look at the space around it, not just whether it technically fits. Can you comfortably get past the coffee table? Is there still room for a side table or an armchair? If you’re looking for sofa ideas for small living rooms, I’d always prioritize breathing room over squeezing in the biggest sofa the measurements allow.

And please don’t feel like compact means playing it safe. I love a smaller sofa in a bold color, or a neutral two-seater paired with a characterful armchair. If the footprint needs to work harder, a corner sofa, sofa bed, or even a futon sofa can offer more functionality without making the room feel crowded.

Pauline Lorenzi-Boisrond, creator of Studio Ett Hem, designed this space alongside partner Maxence Lesueur. "We always seek a subtle balance between bold choices and quiet restraint, aesthetics, and functionality," she explains. "We embraced a quiet palette in the main common areas that let the art and furniture shine," explains the interior designer behind the project, Zoe Feldman. When I worked as a design consultant in New York, I’d often have clients come in with one sofa already in mind: the famous cloud-style sofa. Deep, down-filled and wonderfully slouchy, it looked like the ultimate place to sink into. What people didn’t always realize was how much upkeep came with that look. Rather than making upholstery the focal point, a shapely sofa lets its form take center stage in your living room. “Today’s statement sofa could have a deep curve, an unexpected arm, or a low profile,” says Heather. “In my opinion, the silhouette is now doing the work that color used to do. At first glance, you might not notice the shade of the sofa!”

This shift away from colorful upholstery is a common thread in living room projects, where design features are becoming less ‘look at me’ and more nuanced. Statement sofas haven’t ended, then, but the definition of what makes them special has changed.

“While color still has a place, we’re seeing a move toward quieter palettes, whether the statement comes from form rather than finish,” explains Sophie Rastrick, interior designer at A.LONDON. “A sofa should anchor a room through its presence, and a distinctive silhouette feels elegant and enduring.”

Why Does Sofa Shape Matter?

Your sofa is about so much more than just looks — finding the right design impacts how comfortable you feel as well as how you use your home. “Sofa shape actually influences how people live and behave inside a space,” explains Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of K’Arte Design.

As one of the largest pieces of furniture in your living room, don’t underestimate the role your sofa’s silhouette plays in establishing the mood. “Soft curves create warmth and encourage conversation, while clean architectural lines bring structure and calm,” the interior designer says.

Think about scale and proportion, too, as these factors are linked with shape and influence whether a room feels open and airy or more intimate. “Low profiles create a greater sense of openness and allow architecture to breathe, while curves tend to soften interiors and introduce a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. For a casual lifestyle, look for generous proportions with softened edges and deep seats rather than overly ornate detailing,” adds Katerina.

Certain designs will work better in certain room shapes, so it's important to select not just the right size, but the shape and style of sofa that matches your room shape.

In the living room project above, New York-based interior design studio AREA opted for a tailored curve. “This floating sofa creates a room within the larger space and gently draws people together, while still keeping everything open and approachable,” explains Janine Carendi MacMurray.

When selecting the type of sofa you want, using a more interesting sofa shape than, say, a conventional boxy one, relates differently to other pieces in your room. A more shapely design makes individual side tables, armchairs, and other accessories feel connected to an overall scheme.

“Your sofa’s silhouette defines the way a room is experienced,” says Janine. “A sculptural design speaks to other pieces in the space, holding its own without overwhelming the room.”

Are Sculptural Sofas Here to Stay?

Whereas certain colors and specific patterns can come and go fairly regularly, a considered sofa silhouette tends to last far longer than upholstery trends — as long as you steer clear of anything too wacky. “The sofas that are likely to stand the test of time have well-balanced proportions rather than bold, exaggerated features,” explains Sophie Chapman from The Vawdrey House.

Indeed, the shapes favored by interior designers in 2026 aren’t exactly brand new. “Curved sofas and lower profiles feel very relevant now,” says Bari Jerauld, founder of Blank Slate Studio. “They have also been around for many decades, so I feel that they will endure and won’t date when installed in the right setting. Opt for a shape that works with the style of your home, and it could last a lifetime.”

As a sofa can be an investment piece, considering its longevity is key. By prioritizing shape over color, you’re allowing your sofa to adapt as interior design trends change and act as an anchor no matter what shade your walls are painted or which cushions, rugs, or pieces of art you’ve placed around it.

“Focus on the sofa shape that suits your home,” agrees A.LONDON’s Sophie Rastrick. “Consider the architecture of your property and choose a design that complements its character. This will make sure it works as your home evolves.”

While the statement sofa might not be disappearing entirely, interior designers are placing far more emphasis on silhouettes rather than color.

I vividly remember my mother teaching me to make my bed when I was younger. She showed me how to tuck in the corners of the sheets and fold down the top of the duvet, so it looked orderly and more "put together". But perhaps the most fun part to learn as a kid was the karate chop method for perfectly fluffing the pillows. I was dumbfounded at the time — how does this fun trick make the pillows look so perfect?

For those of you who may not be so familiar, the karate chop is exactly as it sounds. You place a cushion on a bed, chair, or sofa and karate chop the top center to create a pronounced divot. Melbourne-based interior stylist and design educator, Loui Burke explains, "Like many styling techniques, the original intention was to make a cushion look less rigid and more relaxed and lived-in." And for a while, it did just that.

However, like many easy decorating hacks and styling tricks, the karate chop method evolved into something more rigid, formal, and too contrived. Rather than your house looking effortless, a karate-chopped cushion begins to read as amateur. So, is the karate chop method done for good? Or can this style be revitalized to meld with contemporary interior design trends? All that and more below.

The Evolution and Downfall of the Karate Chop Method for Fluffing Pillows

As mentioned, the original intention was to make a cushion look less rigid and more relaxed and lived-in. But as Loui Burke explains, "It was then adopted by the masses and became completely lost in translation. Instead of looking relaxed, cushions were positioned stiffly upright with an exaggerated chop, creating the exact opposite effect."

It almost became a case of, 'It isn’t finished unless you chop it,' when you were never meant to notice the detail at all. The cushion was meant to look inviting and as though it genuinely belongs in the space, but the exaggerated chop defeats its original purpose. "Now it looks amateur," adds Loui. "It suggests someone has picked up a design tip without considering the rhyme or reason behind intentionally disrupting a perfectly shaped cushion."

The only time a pronounced cushion chop is really functional is "when you want to leave a visual signal that a room has been cleaned and tidied, much like vacuum lines in a carpet." For instance, you might see a formal chop in a luxurious hotel bedroom, as it shows elegance and perfect tidiness. While you might not always want such prestige in your everyday home.

Those strong visual signals say, 'I've been here. I've done this.' "They turn a comfortable room into evidence of a completed task, and a clean and orderly home should not be mistaken for a put-together, styled home," says Loui. Let the space relax and feel good.

Styling cushions doesn't need to become a formula that gets overdone; pillows and throws are meant to add layers, texture, and comfort to a room. "We don't think it's necessarily out of style, but we do feel like everyone is in a more organic lifestyle world right now," say Jordyn and Barry, the masterminds behind Brooklyn-based studio, The Brownstone Boys. "Homes don't need to be so crisp and polished; they are more lived-in, and we love that people are embracing that," they say.

So while the exaggerated karate chop is a little too formulaic for the 2026 home, there are still ways to bring it back to its natural roots.

How to Style Cushions in Contemporary Homes

First and foremost, there are a few ways you can style a pillow. And in terms of the contemporary karate chop, Loui clarifies, "There is a difference between a chop and a light tap." And the latter is what you should aim for when arranging throw pillows on a couch or bed. "A gentle tap is perfectly fine if it helps the cushion look relaxed and lived-in," says Loui. Otherwise, prop the cushion up naturally and let the fabric and design be seen. So, relaxed cushions get a tap; formal cushions should simply be propped upright.

And further, a pillow today should be styled based on where it lives in the home. For instance, on a sofa or seating, "I generally lean cushions at a slight angle. That's it. If it needs a gentle tap to relax it, give it one. After sitting against it, fluff it back into shape and lean it again," says Loui. If the fluff feels unnatural, you may not even need a throw pillow on your sofa.

On a bed, there is a little more styling leeway, as there are typically more pillows to style (six pillows on a bed is the designer sweet spot, while some bedrooms are more minimal).

At the moment, the approach is very much 'less is more.' However, layering in design can bring your pillow arrangement to life without feeling too 'stuffy'. On a bed, you can introduce a lumbar, bolster or pebble-shaped cushion instead of lining up five standard 45-by-45-centimeter squares. Rather than a formal chop, "I position cushions on a bed slightly more upright and straight," says Loui. "Do what works for the room, but avoid repeatedly using the same size and shape," adds Loui.

Plus, "Layering with different textures and materials is another way to get the best out of your pillows. We personally love a really versatile pillow that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing," say Jordyn and Barry of The Brownstone Boys.

The cushion insert will also make an enormous difference in how often a pillow needs 'tapping', a chop, or a re-fluff. "Use a feather insert or a lofty fiber alternative, such as corn fiber or hi-loft fill, that mimics the movement and softness of feather and down. Rigid synthetic inserts are useful for seat cushions, but they rarely create the relaxed shape you want from a decorative cushion," explains Loui.

Below are a few different throw pillows that would either look great with a relaxed 'tap' in place of the chop, or that help you ditch the karate chop method altogether.

So to sum it up, today's karate chop should always be more of a 'tap', and if the tap isn't working, then simply let the pillow talk for itself by standing it upright, or let it lean at a relaxed angle. "I know some people will think it's silly to care this much about a cushion, but the alternative really is that simple: lean it naturally or don't have it there," Loui adds.

As with any nuanced color, these characteristics are key. “What distinguishes the hue from traditional beige or greige is its subtle red undertone,” explains Megan Brown. “This gives it a soft rose infusion that introduces warmth without ever becoming overtly pink. The effect is a sense of organic depth that feels grounded, authentic, and quietly luxurious.”

Depending on the light, the color reads as soft, earthy or even lustrous, with these qualities making peige a versatile neutral that works beautifully where out-and-out pink just wouldn’t. “There’s a sensuality to it, but it sits very comfortably within both masculine and feminine interiors,” says Megan.

Whenever we notice a new color trend popping up in designer projects and across furniture showrooms, the first question we always ask is — why now? For peige sofas, the answer is twofold. Very few colors bridge the gap between ‘soft’ and ‘rich’ quite so successfully, while the hue also works well to highlight the weave and texture of different materials.

“People are shifting towards interiors that feel warm and more inviting, and peige does both,” believes the New York-based interior designer Lisa Staton. “As a sofa takes up so much space, it has a huge impact on the overall mood of a living room. Choosing one in this shade brings softness without demanding to be the room’s focal point.”

“Clients are increasingly drawn to colors that feel comforting,” agrees Marea Clark. “Peige has much more life than traditional beige or cool-toned grays, bringing complexity that softens a room. The pinky undertones act almost like a filter, making everything around it feel a little richer.”

Importantly, not all pinky-beige sofas automatically qualify for the sofa trend — color really does matter when searching for the perfect peige sofa. “The undertone is probably the most important thing to make sure your sofa stays timeless,” reveals Sophie Garland. “Lean towards warm clay, subtle red, and terracotta rather than anything too sugary. Always look at large fabric samples in daylight and throughout the evening before making a decision. The color should end up being incredibly versatile.”

Once you’ve selected your sofa, consider how it relates to everything else in your space. “Peige pairs naturally with chocolate browns, purply grays, and soft whites, but it plays well with almost any colors as long as the scheme stays warm,” suggests Marea Clark.

Rustic timbers, woven textures, and glossy finishes will bring a sense of movement alongside the shade, while harder materials can anchor everything together. “Natural stone and aged brass will keep the overall palette grounded and allow your sofa to fit seamlessly into the composition,” says Marea.

Then factor in the challenge of finding a piece that marries form and function (a storage ottoman or pull-out bed, perhaps), and the search gets much, much harder. Going the safe route and treating it as a neutral placeholder can be a missed design opportunity, while a bold trend may be a choice you tire of quickly. So what's the happy medium? I find that it always helps to start by identifying the colors you either don't like, that compete negatively with your scheme, or that feel a bit outdated.

It's not that any sofa color trend is inherently 'outdated', but a few are often used without enough consideration. For instance, my mind instantly goes to a forest green sofa — it's often labeled as dated 'millennial' green because it is considered an overused or 'safe' choice. However, when used with intention, forest green is a sofa color with staying power and can look really elevated. It's all about navigating the fine line of sofa colors that make a statement and elevate a scheme, without overwhelming it or blending in.

Rather than shouting or disappearing, interior designer Andrew Griffiths says, "I like a sofa to anchor the room. It doesn't need to shout, but it should bring depth and character. When a sofa color is selected to be inoffensive or non-committal, the room has nothing to say." So, to put all of this food for thought into tangible advice, below are four sofa colors designers say to be wary of in 2026, and what to look for instead.

1. Dove Gray and 'Greige'

Gray has become quite the taboo color in interior design trends in the past 10 years. We are still fighting the aftermath of the monochromatic, go-with-anything, gray interiors of the 2010s. And unfortunately, cool dove grays are still a tricky sofa color choice.

Andrew Griffith explains, "While choosing gray makes sense to a lot of people as a safe answer to 'what if I don't love this in five years', but that caution is exactly what makes a space forgettable." Dove Gray became the default 'safe' choice for so long that it can leave a room feeling flat unless it's paired with a very rich material palette. "Done badly, and it reads as corporate and cold — suited to an office lobby, not home," Andrew.

There are a few ways to make a gray sofa feel cozier and colors that work similarly in a room without feeling so bland. First of all, decorating with gray will always be more effective with a warm undertone — think taupes and rich charcoals. These make the room feel more inviting.

"I actually owned a gray sofa myself," says interior designer Georgina Wilson. "Seven years ago they felt like a timeless, safe choice, but I've found mine has aged in a way that feels flat and lifeless. The color seems to lose warmth over time, and instead of developing character, it just starts to look a little tired." A richer, warmer fabric with more depth will ground a room.

Or ditch gray altogether and go for a new neutral more in line with today's color trends. "Deep, earthy, slightly unexpected neutrals: aubergine, chocolate brown, rust, inky blue or a warm ochre. These read as considered because they behave like neutrals in a room — they ground a space and let you build around them — while still having real depth and warmth," says Andrew.

2. Out of Place Purple

Purple sofas, especially the aubergine variety, have definitely gained attention in the design world over the past year — they feel unexpected, yet rich and comforting in hue. But it's the question of whether these purple couches will be a trend that's expected to fall as quickly as it rose.

On the one hand, a moody aubergine sofa, when done well, is the ultimate style indicator. "The plum velvet sofa from our Parklands project is a good example: it's dramatic against a pale wall but never feels like a 'statement piece' you'll tire of, because the color itself is quiet in tone even though it's rich in depth," explains Andrew. Such a bold sofa color is all about intention.

However, it's worth proceeding with caution. Georgina says, "While it can look striking initially, it's a color that many people tend to tire of fairly quickly." And that is the last thing you want when planning your living room seating arrangements. If you are going to go purple, make sure you choose it because you love it and because it goes well with your scheme. Otherwise, it can feel random, and the color will date quicker.

Because a sofa is such a large investment, "I prefer colors that I know I'll still enjoy living with many years later," says Georgina. Perhaps a deep red will have more longevity since red is a primary color, or a brown leather sofa can feel very classic and stylish when done well.
