We all know the kitchen is the heart of the home, the central hub of activity, where friends and family naturally gravitate — and for no one is this communal space more important than an extrovert.

For an extrovert, this social, convivial energy isn't just nice to have; it's essential, and finding ways to support this in your design process can have a profound impact on how your modern kitchen feels. It may all sound slightly abstract, but for designers like Johnny Grey, this idea is nothing new. "There are simple ways of creating a kitchen for an extrovert, a person who likes dynamic environments where conversations happen easily," says Johnny, who has been designing kitchens for extroverts for over forty years now.

When designing a kitchen, the space is led by the client's personality and habits, and when you're designing for an extrovert, a few surprisingly simple tricks can make all the difference. So, we asked the experts to share their favorite tips for ensuring your kitchen is the kind of space people want to sit around and chat in, and I'm already thinking of ways to include them in my own design.

1. Central Island

A classic design feature, and for good reason, when it comes to creating a social layout, nothing will make quite as much of a difference as a centrally located kitchen island.

In fact, Johnny goes so far as to call it "the most effective design intervention." And it makes sense why. By providing a centralized location for completing the majority of your kitchen tasks, it allows for a constant, uninterrupted flow of conversation.

With many regular prep surfaces, where the cook stands facing a wall, with a central island, they can look out into the room. Ensuring the majority of your kitchen prep space is orientated towards the rest of the room should be a key consideration when designing a kitchen for an extrovert. "You can’t have a proper conversation if your back is turned, so obviously a cooker or even a sink facing the wall are likely to be no-nos for an extrovert," says Johnny.

2. Island Seating

So, we've established that a central island is key, but it doesn't end there. If you really want to foster a sociable atmosphere in your space, you need to make sure people feel comfortable, providing plenty of opportunities for them to perch and make themselves at home. Which is exactly why Claire Watson, a kitchen designer at Harvey Jones Harrogate, always recommends carving out some space for kitchen island seating, too.

"An extrovert should prioritize features that make it easy for people to gather and spend time together," says Claire. And, to do this, ample seating is key. "Generous island seating works particularly well because it allows family or guests to sit and chat while someone is cooking, and the space can shift effortlessly from an informal breakfast in the morning to drinks with friends in the evening," she explains.

There's a casual informality about a bar stool that makes it perfect for socializing. It allows you to pull up a seat wherever you please, shifting it around to suit the flow of conversation. It allows the chef to remain part of the conversation while offering your guests a comfortable place to rest.

3. Bar Area

Now, I'm by no means saying all extroverts have to drink, but chances are, if you're a frequent host, a dedicated drinks area might get quite good use.

The benefit of a home bar area is that it offers your guests a space to congregate and enjoy themselves without disrupting the host. "A dedicated drinks area is another great addition because guests can help themselves without interrupting the main cooking zone," explains Claire. It's a way of making your own life easier, while ensuring your guests are having plenty of fun.

It's all about creating as many opportunities for socialization as possible; "Ultimately, the most successful sociable kitchens give people several places to gather rather than expecting everyone to congregate in one spot."

4. Colorful Finishes

It may sound silly, but there is proof that extroverts and introverts choose different color palettes. For an extrovert, being surrounded by brighter, bolder colors and finishes can actually help improve energy, so it only makes sense to include them in your kitchen design.

Of course, you can create a colorful kitchen by painting the walls, but there are several more creative ways to integrate color into your space too: "Eye-catching chairs, artwork or decorative patterns for the walls and furniture, and a cleanable rug on the floor" are just a few of Johnny's suggestions.

It's all about finding new ways to communicate your personality and character through design, and, as Claire says, "A confident color on an island, luxurious natural stone or a display area for glassware and ceramics can give the kitchen a sense of character without overwhelming it."

Color doesn't always have to be in your face either; these accents can be just as powerful when done subtly, and even just a small pop of boldness can be enough to wake up a space.

People will happily splash out on a marble worktop, or invest in a state-of-the-art stove, but when it comes to expensive cabinetry, people often feel less inclined to spend the big bucks. But when it comes down to it, your cabinetry is the backbone of your kitchen, and it's well worth spending a little bit extra for the clever functions they can bring into your kitchen.

You may think the standard offerings are good enough for your kitchen drawer planning, and while they will certainly do the job, there's a lot to be said for the convenience, beauty, and ease a custom design can offer. "Most kitchens are based on standard modules, which inevitably creates compromises," explains Søren Lundh Aagaard, who not only owns Danish kitchen brand Garde Hvalsøe, but is a cabinetmaker himself, giving him an in-depth understanding of exactly what a custom cabinet design can do. Instead of forcing your kitchen to fit these standard modules, Søren says, "As cabinetmakers, we can work with the dimensions that are actually there, using the space fully and creating something intended to remain relevant for many years."

From hidden internal drawers to inserts designed specifically for your favorite utensils, there's an endless list of genius, customized features you can integrate into your kitchen drawers when you're willing to spend a little bit more on your cabinetry. And no one knows that better than kitchen designers, which is why I asked them to share their favorite genius drawer features to include in luxury kitchens. So if you're planning a remodel any time soon, you may want to take notes.

1. Internal Drawers

The best thing about custom cabinetry is that a drawer never has to be just a drawer, despite how it may look at first glance. Just take internal drawers as an example. Though they may look like your standard, deep drawer from the exterior, once you open it up, you'll be met with layers of smart, organized kitchen storage.

It's a technique you'll often find popping up in luxury, modern kitchens, and is a favorite of Rachel Davis-Zavala, who frequently includes them in her designs at Harvey Jones Islington. As she explains, "Internal drawers can make particularly good use of a deep cabinet because they retain a simple exterior while creating several very practical layers of storage inside."

They can help simplify the way you organize your kitchen drawers. You could combine a deep lower drawer for chinaware with a hidden internal drawer above for cutlery, or a deep pan drawer with space for utensils to be stored above.

It's these kinds of details you can discuss in depth when working with a bespoke cabinetmaker. “These are details we spend a lot of time exploring with clients in our showrooms because opening a drawer and seeing how the internal storage works is very different from looking at it on a drawing."

2. Clever Customizations

The benefits of custom-made kitchen cabinetry go far beyond looks, and oftentimes, the smartest features are the ones you don't even notice at first.

For Søren, the marker of a truly exceptional drawer is in how it reflects the clients it's made for. Or, more specifically, "It is when a drawer has been designed around the person using it," he says.

The design of your drawers should be catered specifically to you and your unique needs, reflecting how you cook and use your space. "This might mean a drawer made to the exact dimensions of your favorite kitchen utensils, integrated knife storage, or simply using a few extra centimeters that would otherwise have been lost." It can look different for everyone, and therein lies the beauty.

As Søren so aptly puts it, "True luxury, to us, is when something feels completely natural to use because it has been made specifically for you."

3. Pan Drawers

"Good drawer design removes lots of tiny frustrations from everyday life," says Rachel, and there is no kitchen issue quite as frustrating as figuring out how to store your pans.

In small kitchens and large ones alike, the one consistent thing seems to be the lack of logical spots to keep your pots and pans, and no matter what, you're left with a precarious tower of cookware, constantly one gust of wind away from clattering to the ground.

Which is exactly why, in her custom designs, Rachel always specifies deep drawers for storing pans. This simple inclusion can completely transform how you use your space, making cooking enjoyable rather than stressful. "Instead of stacking pans at the back of a cupboard or searching through utensils, everything comes towards you and has a logical home," she says.

As well as deeper dimensions, Rachel also often recommends opting for full-extension drawers, which she says "are particularly useful because you can see and reach everything inside," and also save you from awkwardly shimmying your favorite frying pan out from the back of a cupboard.

4. Habit Drawers

One of the best things about investing in custom cabinetry is that you can shape it to support your unique habits and patterns, whether that be tea drawers or a built-in coffee nook; these specialist additions are the little things that make your kitchen feel uniquely your own.

This is one of the features Rachel loves adding to her designs, saying, "I also love bespoke drawers designed around a particular ritual, whether that’s a perfectly organised tea and coffee drawer beneath a breakfast station or spices positioned exactly where you prepare and cook food." With this feature, the more personal it is, the better. It's an opportunity to do something that feels truly reflective of your lifestyle.

No matter what form it takes, the hope is that it helps to make your life easier, removing some of the friction from your day-to-day. As Rachel puts it, "The real luxury is having storage created to suit how you genuinely use the kitchen rather than expecting you to adapt to it.”

It’s a question worth asking yourself before you commit to a new kitchen scheme: if you were going to live in this home for a long time, do you think you would still be in love with the color you choose after five years? What about 10 years?

There’s something to be said about embracing what you love, regardless of both trendiness and timelessness. Choose something that’s on trend? It’s a shortcut to being tired of your kitchen color choice in a couple of years. Only considering timelessness? There’s not much room for creativity or layering in your own personal preferences.

It’s easier said than done. Separating your own taste from what you’re fed by the algorithm isn’t easy, but if you interrogate your choices, you might just find the real reason behind your decision. To give you some examples, I asked some of my favorite kitchen designers to give their insight on what they would choose for their own kitchens if they knew they were living with it (and, hopefully, loving it) for the next 10 years.

Contrasting Colors

For Matthew Andrews, this question isn't a hypothetical. "We've actually just bought a house in the countryside, an old cottage dating back to the 1800s, and we're extending it at the moment," he explains. Instead of playing it safe and choosing a neutral, Matthew wants to highlight the contrast in the architecture between the original house and the new kitchen extension.

"I'm planning to pair tiled flooring with a moody, darker green door front, then bring in a big pop of color — something like Caravan from Paint & Paper Library, set hard against Nori, also from Paint & Paper Library, or Mid Azure Green from Little Greene. Then a timeless marble worktop on the back wall and sink run to pair with the green, and a full butcher block worktop on a dairy table island in the Caravan finish. That combination gives you a scheme with real visual interest."

It's a very specific choice, yes, but there's a wider lesson in Matthew's choices here. "Done properly, contrasting colors don't fade or date the way a single safe or trendy color eventually will — if anything, I think they get more characterful with age. It's the kind of scheme I'm confident we'll still love in 10 years."

2. Something Deep and Dark

Kitchen brand Roundhouse is one of those design studios that I think balances innovation with timelessness really well, so I'm interested to hear what its designers would pick for their own kitchen colors.

First up, senior designer Allison Lynch, who picks (another) Paint and Paper Library shade — Squid Ink. "It’s got depth; it’s easy to pair with timber, tiles and soft furnishings," Allison explains. "It is a timeless color. It ties in with the green from the garden."

For junior designer Isabella Pacelli, it's another dark shade — Little Greene's Invisible Green. "I love greens and think they’re very timeless," Isabella says. "This green has a really nice earthy muted tone to it, and feels calm and elevated without being too dark and moody."

3. Something Unexpected

Choosing something a little bit different is William Durrant's secret to still loving your color choice year after year. "My own kitchen is light blue, with a burgundy and red pantry. It's an unusual color combination, but it works well: bright enough to make a statement, but not too dark, as the space has low ceilings."

It's more personal in its execution, and less about choosing a timeless kitchen color.

Earthy Neutrals

“Colors that have real longevity are ones that are adaptable and versatile," suggests Emily Newmarch, a design consultant at Kitchens by Holloways.

So, what kind of color would she choose for a kitchen if she couldn't change it for the next 10 years? "Earthy tones tend to be colors that never go out of style, such as warm taupes, deep mushrooms, and muted greens, or, as an alternative to paint, a wood-paneled kitchen is a style that can work in both traditional and modern settings."

"Your kitchen is a long-term investment, so it’s vital to select a color that continues to feel calm and sophisticated but also functional," Emily adds.

Off-White and Timber

While some of the designers offered bold choices for their 10-year kitchen picks, Jayne Everett of Naked Kitchens suggests she'd keep it classic. "I would definitely choose a warm off-white combined with timber," she says. "I love this look, and I know when I revisit it in 10 years, I will still love it. The scheme can be pulled together using a bolder wall color and grounded with a neutral floor; I always love the warmth of timber for this," she adds.

As William Durrant suggests, as long as you're considering how a color functions, not just how it looks, you'll have a scheme that endures. "Instead of worrying about the timelessness of your choice, consider the size of your kitchen and the amount of natural light it gets," he says.

We've all heard of the term 'mood lighting': that soft, warm, dim light that instantly makes you feel more relaxed and comfortable. So why is it then that in our kitchens, the room we spend so much of our time in, we opt for a lighting style I think could best be described as anti-mood lighting?

We're all picturing the same thing, I imagine. An evenly spaced grid of lights looming overhead, casting bright, unflattering light down, with harsh shadows across the room. It's, puzzlingly, a go-to choice for kitchen lighting. This space, it seems, is immune to the 'anti-big light' campaign that has otherwise ravaged our homes, leaving us with one oppressively lit room that benefits neither its function nor form.

As one of the most significant spaces in the home, ensuring it's properly illuminated is key to the success of your design. Just take it from Luke Thomas, design director of the celebrated lighting studio John Cullen Lighting: "Planning kitchen lighting is essential to creating a functional, inviting and flexible space," he says. "It’s important to consider lighting from the moment your kitchen layout is confirmed, ensuring task lighting is in place where needed and that the mood and atmosphere are controllable." Experts share the problems with grid lighting and what they do instead.

The Problem With Grid Lighting

But in case this is all brand new information for you, let's spend some time establishing exactly what is so offensive about the traditional overhead grid-lighting method.

More often than not, grid lighting refers to the use of recessed light fittings that are placed evenly across a ceiling in a neatly formed 'grid' pattern. In theory, this should provide a solid, even flush of light — a useful tool for such a functional space, you might think.

But the truth is rather less simple. Lighting expert Matthew Tirschwell, founder of Tirschwell Lighting Design, has perfected the art of blending lighting into architecture, creating one harmonious language, and, to him, the problem with grid lighting lies in its inability to "take into account the differences between task surfaces and the floor."

Expanding on this point, he says, "Since the kitchen is both a task area — prepping and cooking meals, clean-up, homework for the kids — the majority of work surfaces are the priority for lighting. The floor, on the other hand, is not a task surface. So, by placing a grid of lights over the floor and not the counters, the light is in the wrong location."

It seems so simple, but this is something grid lighting overlooks. Instead of providing a solid light source for your kitchen worktops, this approach illuminates your kitchen flooring, making the space less functional.

But not only is grid lighting less effective for performance, but it also ruins the aesthetic of your modern kitchen. As Southern California-based, award-winning designer Huma Sulaiman says, "The all-recessed ceiling grid — the flat wash of identical downlights at a single color temperature — is fading fast." Not only does it "flatten architecture and lack personality." But it actually makes your space feel sterile, offering a harsh, unflattering finish.

What The Experts Do Instead

A kitchen lighting design that is functional but beautiful requires a little more care and consideration than the one-size-fits-all grid approach, but it's well worth the extra effort, and there are plenty of overhead lighting alternatives to consider.

Instead of opting for an evenly spaced smattering of bulbs, try mapping out the necessary spots for the light to hit, the parts that require illumination, for both functional and decorative reasons. "For example, rather than placing downlights in a grid, they should be positioned to wash light over cupboards and onto work surfaces, providing better illumination for cooking and preparation," suggests Luke. For maximum efficiency, the light should be focused directly over work areas, removing the possibility of distracting shadows.

For the best finish, you'll want to look for ways to include subtle, tasteful task lighting. One great way of doing this is with under-cabinet LED lights; "With upper cabinets in place, place the recessed lights centered over the edge of the counter," suggests Matthew, and, "Add task under-cabinet lighting that is diffused. If the counters have a polished finish, do not use a LED tape, as all those dots will be reflected in the counter."

By embedding your lights underneath your kitchen cabinets, or within them, you're able to provide a helpful illumination to the necessary areas, without detracting from the design.

But, under-cabinet lighting isn't the only way to achieve this. For Nathan Orsman, founder of the famed architectural and landscape lighting design firm, Orsman Design, subtlety is always key when it comes to task lighting, which is exactly why he typically opts for recessed fixtures, like plastered-in ceiling lights. As he describes, these lights "allow us to put light where it's needed without the ceiling feeling cluttered." Though he goes on to add that, "Placement matters just as much. If the light is behind you, you're going to create shadows on the surface you're trying to see. In kitchens and bathrooms, we focus light directly over work areas."

Another issue many experts find with the grid lighting method is the lack of flexibility they offer to your space, forcing you into one, unchanging atmosphere. And, as Luke notes, in kitchens, "Flexibility is key, and lighting should never be limited to a single circuit." Instead, he recommends separating lighting types by categories, such as task lighting and decorative fixtures, and fixing them onto different circuits.

Similarly, for several lighting experts, dimmers are practically a pre-requisite for a well-lit space. Dimming, Nathan says, "lets the space shift throughout the day and evening," while Matthew argues, "With any lighting, everything should be on a dimmer."

It's an easy way to make your kitchen feel more considered and intentional, allowing you the ability to shift and adapt your lighting to suit different settings.

Stylish Lighting for Your Kitchen

The key to a balanced kitchen lighting scheme lies in the use of various light fixtures, each playing its own unique role. As Luke says, "Ceiling downlights provide general illumination, but adding pendants for kitchen island lighting helps lower the sense of scale in high-ceilinged spaces while acting as a decorative focal point. Low-level lighting, such as discreet uplights in doorways or LED strips under island units, creates depth and atmosphere."

They're all equally important, and only when they come together does your kitchen reach full potential, and these are the ones we'd put at the top of your list to shop.

We all know how trends go: hot one day, out the next. It's as brutal as it is unavoidable. After all, the whole point of a trend is that it has appeal in the moment, so how can we know when something's just a trend, and when it's here to stay? We ask the experts, of course. They've shared the one color combo they can't help but cringe every time they see it in 2026. But don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom — they've also shared exactly what to do instead, for a kitchen that's still in style for years to come.

Navy and Brass

So often, the things that most obviously date a space are the ideas that were once the height of style. The issue is, when something becomes so popular, it immediately becomes emblematic of that specific time. Which, in future years, only serves to anchor a design in that time, preventing it from evolving and adapting to the current age. And one particularly prevalent example of this in kitchens is the much-loved pairing of navy and brass.

It wasn't long ago that navy blue kitchens were seen as the ultimate display of sophistication, an undeniable marker of style and elegance, and never more so than when paired with the metallic finish trend of aged antique brass.

Gaining popularity in the late 2010s, most likely in response to the sterile white kitchens of earlier years, navy became the ultimate antidote. Reminiscing on this trend, celebrated interior designer Lia Gold says, "Navy kitchens once felt like the brave alternative to gray, but that combination has become so familiar that it can now feel quite heavy and, dare I say, the new millennial gray."

In a matter of years, something that was seen as 'brave' can easily become expected, losing all of that initial appeal. It also doesn't help that navy isn't exactly the most forgiving shade, especially in darker, small kitchens with limited natural light. As Lia explains, "It can also absorb so much light, especially since most kitchens have that flat matte finish," leaving the space dull and uninviting. "For me, it can feel like you've stopped just short of committing to color, and the whole scheme starts to lack luster," she says.

It's not just the navy aspect that's a problem here, though. So much of the issue lies in the combination of this shade, alongside the once-trendy brass kitchen hardware. For Ntola Obazee, from Kutchenhaus, the key to a timeless kitchen is in the balance of trends and classic choices. Experimenting with one kitchen trend doesn't have to lead to a dated kitchen, so long as you balance it out with some more timeless elements, too. As she explains, "Although some color combinations have had their moment, as designers, we find it’s less about one color or material feeling dated and more about when several recognizable trends are used together, tying a space to a particular moment."

When two trends are so obviously of a specific era, it can be hard for the rest of your kitchen to move beyond that, leading to a dated-looking kitchen. "Navy or forest green with brass has had a huge moment in recent years," notes Ntola, making it a tricky combo to style without feeling a bit passé.

Anne Puukko, founder of Arkken, a Finnish kitchen company, also points to navy kitchen cabinets with brass hardware as a particularly problematic combination, saying, "That pairing was everywhere between about 2015 and 2022, so it dates a kitchen to a specific window rather than feeling timeless."

What to Do Instead

Don't take this to mean blue is suddenly an absolute no-go for kitchens, though. There are still plenty of ways to make this classic color work in a modern kitchen; they just require thinking slightly more creatively.

For example, Anne says, "If you want to bring in blue, which is having a real moment for 2027, don't paint the cabinets; put it on the wall instead." A subtle but impactful diversion from typical kitchen designs, opting to use the focal color on your walls as opposed to your cupboards, not only allows for a design that feels more original, but it's also a lower-risk way to incorporate bolder colors into your design. Cabinets and worktops are a 10-plus-year commitment, so I'd keep those calm," says Anne.

You don't just have to opt for a solid color, either. Anne's a big advocate for using wallpaper in kitchens, saying, "A striped or textured wallpaper behind open shelving, or wrapped floor to ceiling inside a pantry, gives you that color moment as a contained, considered zone rather than a decision you're locked into for a decade." This allows you to make a statement without boxing you into it for life, so your design can evolve with the times.

The exact shade of blue you use can also completely switch up the vibe, too. If you still want something that feels relatively neutral, Lia says, "Swap navy for something like Little Greene’s Celestial Blue and contrast it with deep red painted woodwork or a red and white checkerboard splashback." Or, for a lighter, fresher feel, icy blue kitchens have been one of our favorite trends of the past year.

The hardware you select will make a difference, too. While navy and brass feel predictable, pairing the color with brushed steel or matte black hardware feels surprising in comparison, allowing you to move forward with a dark blue kitchen without it feeling like a 2015 throwback.

Timeless Colors for Your Kitchen

As the experts clearly show, it's not just the color that can date your kitchen; it's the hardware too, and this year's biggest kitchen handle trends will elevate your space to the next level.

As the hardest-working room in the home, the kitchen is one of the easiest spaces to tip into the 'chaotic' category. It has to be so many things at once — a place to cook and eat daily meals, a space to socialize with friends and family, and sometimes even a WFH set-up, too. If you find yourself constantly removing 'clutter' and trying to streamline your space, you might understandably assume this is a desire for a minimalist aesthetic — but is it? Or are you actually just overwhelmed?

As Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of K'Arte Design, explains, "I think most people aren't naturally minimalist; they're just overwhelmed by a kitchen that isn't working hard enough for them. The two can look identical from the outside: a clear worktop and empty surfaces, but one comes from a layout that genuinely supports how you live, and the other is just clutter shoved out of sight because there's nowhere for it to go."

There are a plethora of kitchen layout ideas to choose from, but what works in one home won't necessarily work in another — it comes down to how the room is used and how to make the most of the available space. So I asked the experts what layout tweaks they use that work in any size and style of space, that reduce 'chaos' and make a kitchen feel calmer — here's what they said.

1. Separate Prep Zones From Display Zones

Establishing whether you're a true 'minimalist' or whether you're trying to combat the stress of a kitchen that isn't working hard enough for you often comes down to how you (try to) maintain your space.

"If a client keeps counters clear without trying, they're probably a genuine minimalist. If they're constantly tidying the same three surfaces, the kitchen isn't giving them enough storage to begin with," says LA-based interior designer Alana Marie, principal of Alana Marie Interiors.

"The first tweak I make in almost every kitchen is separating prep zones from display zones. Countertops should only ever hold what you're using in that moment, and everything else gets its own address: a pantry cupboard, an appliance garage for the toaster and coffee maker, a landing zone for mail and keys that isn't the island," explains Alana.

Designer Katerina Tchevytchalova agrees that proper zoning is one of the most important elements of good kitchen design, and one that is most often overlooked. "If your prep area, cooking area, and everyday clutter — post, keys, chargers — are all fighting for the same worktop, the kitchen will always feel chaotic no matter how much you declutter," she explains.

A calm kitchen doesn't have to be a minimalist kitchen — it just needs to be designed with intention. Having defined kitchen zones that suit your space and daily needs is key to a high-functioning kitchen that supports you, rather than working against you.

2. Keep the Traffic Path As Clear as Possible

One of the easiest ways to make your kitchen feel chaotic is by failing to appreciate or accommodate the traffic flow throughout the space.

As Eris Koutsoudakis, co-founder of Meraki Design, explains, "If everyone is constantly walking through the cooking area to get to the fridge or the garden, the kitchen is always going to feel busy. We spend a lot of time looking at how people will actually move through the space and trying to keep those routes as clear as possible."

Along with adequate clearance within walkways and between key structural elements of your space, you'll also need to pay close attention to the placement of regular-use appliances and cabinets so that they don't block the flow of traffic. Once you understand how you move through the space, you can create the best kitchen layout type for your lifestyle and routines.

"Most 'chaos' is really just a layout that's fighting against your daily habits, and once the flow works, the calm follows naturally," explains Katerina.

3. Embrace Integrated Storage

Integrated storage is key to a kitchen that feels inherently calm. As interior designer Greg Natale says, "One of the main causes of visual chaos in a kitchen is the number of appliances competing for valuable benchtop space."

When everything has a home, maintaining a streamlined space comes easily. Conversely, without designated homes for appliances, cookware, prep tools, and everyday items, clutter quickly piles up, along with the chaos and stress.

"The biggest shift I make is concealment with intention," explains Katerina. "In a recent project, we built a pocket-door coffee station into the cabinetry, so it can be closed away for a completely clean, minimalist backdrop, or opened up and styled when you want the surfaces on show. That flexibility is what actually calms a chaotic kitchen, rather than forcing you to keep everything permanently hidden or permanently tidy."

Eris Koutsoudakis agrees, and tells me that they often try to hide the more functional parts of the kitchen wherever possible in their projects, and if space allows, a back kitchen or pantry can be ideal for this.

Greg Natale is a fan of a butler's pantry, too, adding that they provide a "secondary workspace where food preparation and appliances can be concealed from the main kitchen, while also offering additional storage," he says.

What is key, though, is that not everything needs to be hidden. "We love kitchens that feel lived in, with ceramics, cookbooks and objects that have some personality," says Eris. "It’s more about having a balance. If you have good concealed storage, you can afford to have those more personal things on display without the whole room feeling cluttered."

Ultimately, a kitchen does not need to be minimal to be calm. As designer Laura Calleeuw explains, "When proportions are right, cabinetry is integrated, circulation flows naturally, and storage follows daily routines, a kitchen can be rich in materials, objects and life — and still feel remarkably calm."

Architectural designer Georgina Wilson explains that the location and orientation of a kitchen matter far more than its aesthetics.

"Ideally, the kitchen sits at the heart of the home, in the center of circulation, often in the least glamorous part of the house. That's what frees up the best positions, the ones with the light and the views, for actual living and entertaining.

"If you can spend money putting the kitchen in the right place, that will always deliver better value than spending the same money dressing up a poor layout," she says.

A location that helps promote greater flow in your space will inevitably lead to a much calmer kitchen, too.

Can Pass-Through Windows Solve a Tricky Layout?

As Georgina explains, "I believe [kitchen pass-through windows] can enhance a space only if it's located at the back of the home, in the primary passage to the outdoors. Otherwise, it will hinder access and look messy. People will sacrifice island size to install one. They can look cute in photos, but usually detract from the overall aesthetic of the home."

But then again, if you're working with a small kitchen, where a patio door might not be an option with the loss of valuable cabinet and counter space, a pass-through window might be exactly the compromise that works for you and your layout. It all comes down to the space you're working with and your personal preference.

You don't need to adhere to a minimalist design aesthetic to create a calm kitchen; you need to ensure your space is best placed to support you and your household's daily routines.

As Eris says, "Sometimes you’re not actually a messy person with too much stuff. Your kitchen just isn’t working hard enough for you."

Normally, I'm one of those people who clings to summer for dear life, not accepting the arrival of autumn until trick-or-treaters are at the door. But, for some reason, this year, I've found myself eagerly anticipating its arrival. A sign of maturity, perhaps; I think I may be becoming a true 'autumn person', and I'm already planning how to design my house accordingly.

It's well known that the colors you use in your home can affect your mood, which is exactly why choosing your kitchen color is such a crucial decision. It's the room you're likely to spend the most time in, so it only makes sense to choose a color that feels true to you. You want a shade that feels welcoming and relaxing, one that puts your mind at ease as soon as you enter a room. And if you happen to be an autumn person, I've found just the colors for you.

Even if you're not a dedicated autumn-lover, it's hard to deny the allure of an autumnal color palette. With all the warm, burnt oranges and sunset tones, as well as deeper, richer shades, it's a palette that works no matter the time of year, and these are the colors our experts say are the best to use in your kitchen.

1. Olive Green

While sage green kitchens may have had their moment, for a more timeless, grown-up take on the look, olive green is the way to go.

Unlike shades like pistachio and sage, olive has a beautiful depth to it, bringing more dimension into your kitchen without weighing it down. It draws on the earthy color palettes typically associated with autumn, but is slightly more neutral than the rest, allowing for a more versatile design.

Take designer Mariam Prada, for example. While she typically opts for a light, neutral color palette, terracotta is an exception. As she says, "Terracotta brings warmth without the harshness of a bright red." The warm shade instead "creates an immediate sense of comfort," especially when paired with rich, textured natural materials and warm metallic finishes.

3. Burnt Orange

No color epitomizes autumn quite like the rusty hues of burnt orange. With earthy undertones of red clay and fallen leaves, this shade is autumn at its best, and it looks just as beautiful on your kitchen cabinets as it does across the treetops.

With years of experience at one of the most beloved paint brands, Helen Shaw is well qualified to offer advice on color choices, and, in her opinion, "a confident red-orange, such as Benjamin Moore's Soft Glow" is a natural choice for an 'autumn person'.

But, for a more complex look, Helen recommends moving away from the color-drenching approach and instead pairing the warm, rusty color with something a tad brighter and fresher. "Introducing a touch of unexpected contrast is a contemporary take on a straightforward color wash concept," explains Helen.

Set to become one of the next hottest kitchen trends, she says, "This season, opting for a moody mid-tone contrasted with a warm-based accent provides a surprise for the eye while maintaining a cossetting feel. Using Soft Glow in a less obvious area, such as the underside of an archway or the transition space between two rooms, is a creative way to tap into this rich and cozy autumnal look."

4. Soft Browns

"For the “Autumn person,” muted cinnamon brown is a great choice," shares interior designer Neha Gupta, adding, "It’s a warm, cozy, and earthy color between shades of brown, rust, and even terracotta."

Brown has had a real moment over the past year, and it's taken over fashion and interiors alike. We're not complaining, though; it's about time this warm, rich shade got the love it deserves, and there's no place better suited to this appetizing shade than the kitchen.

It feels unique in comparison to many other neutral kitchen colors, with Neha noting, "Because it contains a tinge of earthy colors like brown, it doesn’t feel vibrant or saturated, but has enough depth to set it apart from the mild hues usually found in many interior design schemes."

It works particularly well as an accent shade, used to accentuate specific architectural features, or on the lower cabinetry, rather than across the whole room.

5. Burgundy

If there's one color I'd argue more people should be using in this space, it's burgundy. It's a grounded color that designers love for kitchens, and it couldn't be much more perfect for autumn lovers.

It's rich, enveloping, and inviting, creating a cozy warmth that you'll never tire of. When designing spaces for self-described 'autumn people', designer Laura Hammett says, "I love leaning into richer colors for a cozy, cocooning aesthetic. These shades create an enveloping elegance that feels both contemporary and timeless." They may feel intense, especially if you're used to a bright, white kitchen, but that intensity is exactly what makes these designs feel so special.

Sitting somewhere between red and brown, burgundy feels more neutral than a true red shade, making it easier to pair with other kitchen materials and finishes. For Laura, the shade Mulberry from her paint collection is the perfect example. She describes it as "a deeply sophisticated, rich shade of burgundy that exudes warmth and elegance."

But they're only one part of the kitchen design story, and those dark cabinets need to be paired with the right kitchen countertop ideas if you want them to really work for your design.

“The mistake is assuming dark cabinetry automatically needs a bright white worktop to contrast," says Athina Bluff, founder of Topology Interiors. "Sometimes a pale surface lifts the room; at other times, a tonal dark worktop creates a far more sophisticated result.”

If you're drawn to the light side for kitchen countertop colors, Athina recommends choosing ivory, putty, or cream rather than brilliant white, allowing the dark kitchen to be lifted and softened by the lighter tones, avoiding stark and jarring surfaces that dominate the space. “It helps a dark kitchen feel calmer, lighter, and more inviting.”

2. Make a Statement With Green Marble

A dark wood kitchen, in particular, gives you a chance to try something exciting with color, and in this beautiful kitchen by Studio Braw, a rich green is an intriguing accent. The rich golden-dark cabinetry feels instantly cocooning, while the green marble countertops bring a hit of natural color and movement that keeps the scheme feeling fresh and vibrant.

"The stone is a Verde Guatemala," Louise McGarry, creative director of Studio Braw, explains. The pink walls and ceiling give a playful finish to this brilliant amalgamation of contemporary and traditional features.

3. The Beauty of Aged Copper

Let’s talk copper. The soft, slightly full sheen of aged copper is glamorous, sophisticated, and offers a sheen without being too flashy or shiny. But the real beauty of copper backsplashes and counters lies in its practicality and patina. "Paired with dark cupboards, it is moody, but also very practical; every touch and mark just adds to its patina,” says Helen Parker, creative director at deVOL. "The patterns created by everyday wear and tear change the surface constantly, giving a living finish which gets better with time."

What could be better or more encouraging than making a work surface better by simply using it?

4. Embrace the Best of Both Worlds

If subtle isn’t really your style, let me introduce you to the heavily veined marble in this kitchen by Blakes. With its crisp white base and bold, dark grey veining, this countertop is designed to be seen and admired by all.

Annie Burrows, lead designer at Blakes London, explains the concept: "When working with darker cabinetry, we favor lighter natural stone worktops to create contrast without the scheme feeling stark."

However, by choosing bolder veining, it actually makes the look feel lighter. "The intricate veining and tonal depth of natural marbles, such as Arabescato Corchia, introduce warmth and movement, creating a softer transition between the light stone and darker cabinetry," Annie adds. "The result is a scheme that feels balanced, layered and refined."

So, rather than playing it safe with a barely-there pattern, the dramatic statement of the veining applies instant character to a dark wood kitchen to create the perfect balance.

5. Double Down on Dark

Now, if you’re already embracing the dark kitchen cabinetry, why not take it a step further with a dark countertop?

"Sometimes keeping everything dark and cohesive can really add to the moody look of a dark kitchen," Isabella Pacilli, junior sales designer at Roundhouse, tells me. "So rather than breaking up the scheme with a lighter surface, going tonal can create a rich and enveloping look that feels effortlessly sophisticated. Think deep charcoal, black stone, or a patterned dark marble. This certainly proves dark on dark can be anything but gloomy.

"It feels very luxurious, and in spaces with lots of natural light it doesn’t feel too dark," she adds.

6. Choose Complementary tones

Choosing a worktop that sits tone-on-tone with the kitchen’s overall color palette is a very different option in style, but most definitely works. "In this case, a gray limestone that complements the shade of the walls creates a calm and harmonious atmosphere," says Jonna Karlsson, kitchen designer at Nordiska Kök. The traditional dark wood adds depth and warmth, while the gray feels contemporary and intentional; together they create an unexpected cohesive design.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing a countertop for a dark kitchen; it’s got to work for you and your home. But there are plenty of options that will serve you well for years to come.

A well-designed kitchen is built to last, and that’s the way it should be — but even the most carefully chosen materials need a little attention to keep them looking and performing their best. The secret to longevity often comes down to the jobs we’re less likely to discuss, and they’re easily overlooked.

I’m talking about grout lines, tending to chips and scratches in kitchen countertops, and even keeping those moisture-prone areas in check. We’ve spoken to the experts to uncover the maintenance jobs that are really worth adding to your to-do list, from the small fixes that keep everything running smoothly to the simple steps that can protect materials you’ve invested in for years to come.

So whether your kitchen is brand new or just a few years old, these easy-to-miss details will help your space stay looking (and working) as good as it did when it was first installed.

1. Grout and Sealant Care

Much like bathrooms, kitchens are a victim of discolored grout, especially behind areas like the hob. Unfortunately, this is a job that requires time and patience. “To rake out grout lines is arduous and can be a little stressful as you'll need to ensure you don't chip the tiles,” Chris Carroll, founder and director of All In One Design and Build Studio, says.

He suggests using a good diamond cutting tool for a quicker and cleaner removal. “If the affected area is solely behind the hob, a quicker solution would be to source a solid splashback that works with your kitchen and tiles for an easier wipeable surface.”

Mastic also has a habit of discoloring or lifting from the worktop. This can lead to further issues of water permeating into timber worktops or even behind the carcasses, leading to further problems. “Resealing internal corners to all parts of the kitchen will give a quick look of a sharply maintained space and the peace of mind of water management,” recommends Chris.

It’s also worth checking seals around sinks and taps at least once a year. Sam Harris, senior design consultant at Ashford Kitchens & Interiors, agrees, “They don't last forever, and replacing aging sealant before it fails is one of the cheapest ways to avoid water damage inside cabinets.”

2. Cabinetry Wear and Tear

"The maintenance job most homeowners forget is simply paying attention to moisture,” says Sam Harris. While a little steam is inevitable in a busy kitchen, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on where it settles. “Repeatedly leaving condensation to settle on cabinet doors, especially around kettles, coffee machines and dishwashers, can gradually affect painted finishes and timber over time.” Wipe away excess moisture whenever you can, particularly around the harder-working areas.

Of course, even the best-kept kitchen cabinetry will eventually show signs of everyday wear and tear. The good news is that, unlike countertops, wooden cabinetry has the advantage of being able to be refreshed rather than replaced. Chris advises repainting as a simple way to give tired cabinetry a new lease of life.

“There are numerous paint companies to choose from for a product to suit kitchen doors and drawers, but not all carry the guarantee that they will not chip easily,” he explains. "Whether you opt for an oil-based paint or water-based paint, the key is to allow plenty of time for it not only to dry, but they must be left to cure.”

An easy step to underestimate, but he assures us this is the most important part to take into consideration. Often, the better products can take up to two weeks to fully cure and harden, which means you either keep the fascias off in a safe place or use them very carefully. Get this part right, and “Once the curing process is complete, your door fronts will have a new lease of life for a fraction of the cost of replacing them.”

3. Countertop Maintenance

It’s not easy to be precious about your countertops, but when you invest in something special, you want them to last as long as possible in their best condition. Chris explains how stone worktops are so versatile: "They look great, they’re hard-wearing, and they’re often in keeping with the period of the house, or can be used to create a traditional look in a modern build." However, they are still susceptible to chips, stains, and scratches, but he reassures that a good stone mason could bring them back with some attention.

When it comes to solid wood countertops, they vary in tones and grains, can be highly lacquered for protection in either a gloss or a matte finish, and can have under- or over-mount sinks. Much like stone, small chips in a timber countertop can be repaired easily. “Timber is one of the better timeless materials to use on a property,” says Chris. “ A common misconception is that they need to be resealed every six months, but this only applies to oiled worktops. A lacquered worktop does not need resealing when done right the first time.”

4. Limescale Build-Up

Often, especially in hard water areas, kitchen taps can suffer from a high level of limescale. If this occurs, Chris recommends replacing the tap: “It’s the quickest way to give your kitchen a little facelift,” plus they require the same universal hole cutout in sinks and worktops.

“There are hundreds to choose from, and the satisfaction of a free-flowing tap without limescale build-up or stiff glands is a really simple pleasure.”

5. Aging Hardware and Discontinued Details

In most cases, quality cabinetry handles and knobs will last for years, yet if you’re at the stage where these elements are damaged or simply aren’t relishing in their natural patina, they may just need replacing. The problem lies in the situation where the exact design and finish you originally chose has been discontinued.

Replacing the current design with a new and updated look is a great way to quickly style up the look of a kitchen without replacing door and drawer fronts, but the problem lies in the positioning of the fixing holes. “The chance of finding a handle with the exact hole centers is almost impossible. There are options of handles with a back plate which would cover the holes externally, but this would be down to taste and preference,” explains Chris.

However, with a newly painted door, you can simply fill the holes, sand, and paint to a flush finish. Now you can choose any handle or knob to go in the original spot, or a newly-placed location, and voilà!

People often think kitchen maintenance means buying specialist products, but in many cases it's simply about spotting small issues before they become expensive ones. Sam advises, at the very least, spending ten minutes every few months checking hinges, seals, and other details around the kitchen, including those hidden or in less obvious areas.

It might not be the most exciting item on your to-do list, but a little regular upkeep can go a surprisingly long way. Catch a loose handle, a tired seal, or a tiny chip early, and you could save hundreds, if not thousands, in repairs later down the line. After all, the kitchen is probably one of the biggest investments in a home, so giving it some attention now is much easier than having to replace the whole thing a short while after.

There's no denying it: the colors you use can define your space. And in rooms where so much of the design is ruled by practicality, like the kitchen, this becomes all the more important. Do you want to play it safe and opt for a classic combo, or will you try something new and defy conventions with something a little more original?

It's a big decision to make, and even if the rest of your design has been crafted to perfection, the wrong kitchen color can leave the whole space feeling off. Go too bold, and you run the risk of a kitchen that feels overwhelming. But, equally, if you go the other direction and choose a completely neutral color scheme, your space can quickly lose all dimension, appearing flat and, dare I say it, boring. The trick is finding something in the middle, a combo that finds a balance between playful and timeless, and of course, knowing the combinations to avoid doesn't hurt, either.

Which is exactly why I took the time to turn to the experts and ask them the color combinations they would suggest avoiding at all costs. As well as what they recommend doing instead, so you can know exactly what works and what doesn't.

1. Green and Red

Today, people are increasingly moving towards more experimental, colorful kitchen designs, with butter yellows and cheerful blues dominating our feeds. But, according to the experts, brighter isn't always better, and it's easy for this trend to cross over from stylish to overwhelming.

While one bright pop of color can certainly bring a surge of life into your kitchen, Annie Burrows, lead designer at luxury kitchen brand Blakes London, believes that you're always better off limiting yourself to just one statement color. "We always advocate choosing colors that you genuinely love and making the kitchen feel personal, but we tend to avoid combining two or more very strong colours, such as yellow and purple or green and red," she says. One bright shade can bring interest and contrast into your space, adding dimension and depth, but when you begin to layer various contrasting colors, they can start to fight for attention, creating an almost suffocating effect.

They also carry less cozy, welcoming connotations than you may want in your home. Annie notes that these bright combinations can feel more reminiscent of brand colors, "giving the kitchen a more corporate feel."

Similarly, particular color combinations can have very strong visual associations that can be hard to overcome. This is particularly prevalent with the green and red colorways, which Annie aptly notes "can quickly veer towards a Christmas palette." Although these two colors may look gorgeous separately, when used together, it can be hard to overcome the Christmas connotations, which, while fun in December, are likely not what you want for your kitchen all year round.

"A kitchen is often one of the most hardworking and sociable rooms in the house, so we prefer color schemes that feel considered and enduring rather than overly stimulating," explains Annie. It's also important to consider how the colors you choose will affect your home's sellability. Generally, neutral kitchen colors are a safer bet for those thinking of putting their house on the market, as they are more likely to appeal to a wider pool of buyers.

Instead, Try

2. Black and White

While two bright colors can be too much of a risk, playing it safe can often be just as bad a move.

Although it's long been thought of as a classic, Jayne Everett, the creative director of Naked Kitchens, shares: "The traditional, high-contrast black-and-white combination is one we generally steer clear of in our bespoke designs."

Fans of minimalist kitchen designs might lean towards this combo in the hope that it will offer a sleek finish, with a clean, modern effect. But, in reality, the result can be harsher than expected. As Jayne points out, "Black and white is undeniably modern, but it often lacks soul." And in the kitchen, which is meant to be the heart of the home, a lack of soul can be hard to come back from. It's one of those things that makes a kitchen feel unwelcoming, no matter what you do.

"We love combining warmer colors, which really enhance the warmth and create an inviting kitchen design," says Jayne. You can still use these neutral shades; just try pairing them with some softer, warmer tones to counteract the harshness. For example, Jayne suggests, "Combine black kitchen cabinetry with warm, earthy off-whites rather than a sharp, brilliant white. This softens the edges and makes the space feel luxurious rather than graphic." The materials you use will make a difference too. The natural, textural warmth of a wood kitchen can never feel cold and is an easy way to warm up an otherwise monochromatic design.

3. Navy and Black

Emerging as a rejection of the bright white kitchens of the 2000's, in recent years, we've seen a growing trend for deep, moody kitchens, with intensely dark color palettes. But before you commit to the look, it may be best to give it some deliberation first.

"Think twice before pairing two dark shades, such as blue and black," warns Tamsin Holland, a kitchen design expert at Paula Rosa Kitchens. Through her years of experience, Tamsin knows just how alluring these darker shades can be, and how effective they can look when used correctly.

The dark intensity of navy blues and blacks can lend a dramatic, striking beauty to your kitchen. However, it's all too easy to be heavy-handed with these darker shades, leaving your kitchen feeling oppressively dark and heavy, and instead of the desired 'quietly dramatic' kitchen you were going for, you'll be left with an eerie, cavernous space.

"Darker colors can work well in kitchens if they’re used with restraint and intention," explains Tamsin. When used sparingly and with careful consideration, a dark blue or inky blank can bring depth to a room, providing a welcome contrast to other, light colors. The trick lies in finding the balance between the two.

Our homes are reflections of ourselves — an expression of not just our style, but our priorities, routines, and desires. And no place is this clearer than in the kitchen.

It would only make sense, then, that every kitchen would look a little different, shaped by the person living within it. However, within the current trend economy, we've become so used to seeing recycled versions of the same design over and over again. It's as if there's only one way to design a modern kitchen nowadays, leaving no room for individuality. We're so used to seeing a certain vision of what a kitchen should look like that it's become difficult to distinguish what you actually like and what you're just used to seeing.

Not everyone is plagued by this issue, though. No, for designers who spend every day carefully crafting kitchens that perfectly reflect their clients' needs, adjusting the designs to meet their unique preferences, it becomes a lot easier to pick out the features that appeal to them and the ones that don't. So I asked the designers exactly what design features they would never be caught including in their own kitchens, and their answers were not what I expected.

1. Raised Microwave Storage

"Upper cabinet microwaves are a kitchen eyesore, and I would never design a kitchen with one," says Damian Samora, from Ferguson & Shamamian Architects. Proper storage of kitchen appliances is the key to a tidy, uncluttered kitchen. A well-placed appliance garage, or cabinet, can keep your kitchen worktops free, providing you with more much-needed prep area.

However, not all kitchen storage solutions are created equal, and while some are the backbone of a functional, organized design, others can have the opposite effect, and this is exactly what you'll find with a raised cabinet microwave. "There is simply no functional or aesthetic occasion where you should stare at a black window and have children reaching above their heads for scalding hot bowls of anything," argues Damian.

You may think keeping your microwave stored above your countertops will help to make your kitchen more streamlined, removing the need for a bulky box sitting on your counters, but not only does a raised microwave look ugly, it actually introduces more risk into your space, especially if you have young children.

2. Fluted Cabinets

Fluted wood kitchen cabinetry has been one of the standout kitchen trends of the past few years, popping up in almost every chic, modern design. But for Isabella Pacelli, a designer at London's trend-setting kitchen design brand, Roundhouse, this is a style she'd avoid using in her own home.

While it's undeniably beautiful, there are a few practical issues that would keep Isabella from featuring this kitchen cabinet style in her own kitchen. As she explains, "It is difficult to clean due to the ridges, and in a painted finish it is prone to chipping on the scalloped edges, unfortunately."

Your kitchen cabinets form one of the crucial elements of your design, and over the years, they'll likely be subjected to plenty of wear and tear, so choosing a low-maintenance kitchen material for this feature is undoubtedly the smarter option.

3. Built-In Coffee Machines

There's a certain belief that when it comes to designing a luxury kitchen, you should always choose built-in appliances over freestanding ones. But according to Amy Peltier from Peltier Interiors, the truth is a little more nuanced.

While a concealed fridge will always look chic, there are some other appliances that aren't quite so beneficial to have installed as a permanent fixture in your kitchen. Namely, the coffee machine. "I would never install a built-in coffee maker," states Amy.

Not only is this a far more expensive option than a regular espresso machine or coffee maker, Amy shares that the results are often less than desirable: "Over the years, feedback from clients who have had them in their homes has been less than ideal," she shares, adding, "They require regular cleaning and servicing, which can be cumbersome, and there are only a handful of really good options on the market."

With so many fantastic coffee machines on the market now, you'll find far better results sticking with a countertop machine. And, if you're really after the minimalist kitchen look, Amy says, "For clients who don’t want one sitting out, we’ve even concealed them inside cabinetry on an appliance lift. This keeps the coffee maker hidden on a daily basis while still making it easily accessible and, importantly, not permanently built in."

4. Oversized Islands

"One thing I would never include in my own kitchen is an oversized island simply for the sake of having one," shares interior designer Maureen Gomez, whose London-based studio specializes in elegant designs that bring contemporary touches to period properties.

So often with kitchen islands, people follow the logic of 'the bigger, the better', but, according to Maureen, this is often to the detriment of the overall flow and feel of the space. This is especially prominent in small kitchens, where an island is often just about squeezed in, and ends up taking over the entire space, leaving the room looking cramped and awkward.

Even worse still, Maureen says, "Don't even get me started on the hideous trend of installing two islands. I would always favor a smaller, beautifully proportioned island, or no island at all, over one that interrupts the natural flow of the space."

It's not just the size of your island that can be an issue; Maureen also draws attention to the often problematic placement of sinks and hobs on kitchen islands. As she explains, "An island is often the social heart of the room, so I prefer to keep it free from extractor fans, pans, cooking splashes and lingering heat." Similarly, a kitchen sink invites clutter onto your counters, often leaving your island covered in dirty dishes and drying racks.

5. Recirculated Extractors

The benefit of working in kitchen design is that you're granted a first-hand view of what works and what doesn't. While the rest of us have to live with it to find out, for the designers, every new project offers a learning opportunity, and they have the time and experience to filter through what is just a trend and what should become a modern essential.

And, unfortunately, as Matthew Andrews, head of design at bespoke kitchen and joinery specialists, Co Domi, found out, the sleek, recirculating extractor hood fans fit firmly in the former category. "On paper it looks like the easier option — no ductwork, simpler install — but it never really removes the grease or odors," explains Matthews.

Though it may seem like the easier, faster option, in the long run, it can end up dragging down your kitchen as a whole. "In a kitchen where every material and finish has been chosen with intention, that's a false economy as it compromises air quality, shortens the life of cabinetry and worktops, and the filters need replacing far more often than people realize," says Matthew, adding, "If ducted extraction genuinely isn't possible, I'd redesign the layout around one that is, rather than compromise on it."

6. Banquette Seating

While, for the most part, the designers draw on practical noticings in their decision-making, there are other cases in which it simply comes down to personal preference.

This was the case for Alexis Ryder, from Robert A.M Stern Architects. "I would skip a banquette in my own kitchen," she tells me.

This is not because there is anything fundamentally wrong with an island with built-in seating or banquette dining in the kitchen; it's just that this style wouldn't align with Alexis' lifestyle.

As she explains, "I love to cook, and the kitchen is the soul and main zone of my home, so I want it to accommodate real life, not dictate it." Built-in seating can be a great solution for squeezing seating into small kitchens; however, for more social spaces, they can feel a little restrictive. Instead, Alexis says, "Give me fun chairs I can pull together for a crowd, move around for a conversation, or clear out entirely when dinner turns into cocktails. Fixed seating has its place; I just don’t want it fixing the way I live."

To design a kitchen like a pro, you need to plan it like a pro and avoid common kitchen planning mistakes from the start — 'fail to prepare, prepare to fail' is the key mantra here.

According to research from 2022, the average Londoner is spending a whopping £800 on takeaways each year. And while it may be easy to chalk that up to laziness, there may be something else at play. According to the experts, the way you design your kitchen can actually dictate how likely you are to cook in it. That's right, your takeaway habit isn't actually your fault; it's your kitchen's.

This may sound like a convenient line, but there's actually some science to back it up. It's all about the psychology behind your modern kitchen design, and how certain features and designs can impact your desire to cook. Don't believe me? Just take it from Karen Haller, one of the leading authorities on behavioral color and design psychology. As she explains it, "From a behavioral design psychology perspective, our environments can influence the way we behave, and the kitchen is no different. If the layout makes cooking feel awkward, frustrating, or more effort than it needs to be, we're naturally going to be less inclined to cook."

There's not just one thing at fault here, either; there are a whole slew of different design mistakes we're all making that are leading us straight towards those food delivery apps and away from our ovens. So, I asked the experts to break down exactly what they are, and what we should be doing instead, so we can say goodbye to our takeout habit once and for all.

1. Disjointed Layout

You could have the most gorgeous space, but if you've got the wrong kitchen layout, none of it will be worth a thing. Your layout provides the fundamental foundation for your kitchen, dictating how it feels to move around and use the space. And nothing will have you reaching for Uber Eats faster than a bad kitchen layout.

Of course, at the most basic level, the wrong layout will make your design look awkward, but it goes beyond this, impacting the way your brain responds to it, too. "If a kitchen layout is illogical, cramped, or requires too many extra steps, it can actually cause muscle tightening on a subconscious level," explains designer Alicja Wawrzyniak. As the founder of Alwa Design Studio, the psychology of design plays a central role in how Alicja approaches her work, and her projects are always created with the relationship between spatial design and daily habits in mind.

If your kitchen immediately triggers this uncomfortable, negative physical reaction, your brain will respond to this as a genuine threat, finding solutions and alternatives to prevent this experience. "When the layout disrupts the natural flow of meal prep, our subconscious naturally seeks the path of least resistance to avoid that stress," explains Alicja, adding that "More often than not, that means reaching for a takeout menu."

Ignoring design principles like the 'working kitchen triangle' or opting for an oversized, centrally located kitchen island, which blocks the natural path of movement, are some common examples of this issue.

2. Lack of Prep Space

"One of the greatest mistakes made when designing a kitchen is to provide too little clear counter area next to the sink and stove," explains Kanika Bakshi Khurana, founder of Kanika Design, who highlights the significant role interior design plays in creating stress-free environments.

Little mistakes, such as not leaving yourself adequate prep space around your kitchen appliances, can be enough to put you off cooking, making the whole experience feel overwhelmingly intimidating and mentally exhausting.

The problem is, so many of us get so distracted by all the different appliances and accessories in our kitchens — which we convince ourselves we need — that we forget to leave enough space to do the actual cooking.

Instead of overcomplicating things, Kanika suggests leaving yourself one solid block of countertop space solely for prep work. "When everything is organized, and the flow through the kitchen makes sense, cooking will be a lot more enjoyable," she says.

3. The Sensory Experience Is Off

As Karen Haller points out, this idea is not solely limited to how your kitchen functions. Even if you follow all the kitchen design rules and have the most perfectly logical layout, if you neglect the sensory side of your design, you'll likely still find yourself stuck with a space that feels less than satisfactory.

The idea of color psychology in interior design is central to Karen's work and, as she explains, "The colors, materials, textures and lighting all contribute to how we experience the space, influencing how we think, feel and behave when we're in it." While this will apply across the entirety of your home, in the kitchen, it can have some of the most notable effects on your quality of life.

"If the environment doesn't support the experience you want when cooking, it can affect both how much you enjoy it and how inclined you are to cook in the first place," she says. The way we eat plays such a crucial role in the way we live, and when you're unable to find the joy in cooking and constantly find yourself consuming processed fast food, over time, that will take a toll on your general quality of life.

"With my clients, I always start by looking at the behavior they want their kitchen to support and what would make cooking feel easier and more enjoyable for them," explains Karen, adding, "That includes the layout, but also the sensory experience they’re creating through color and lighting."

This can, and should, look different from person to person. "For example, in my own kitchen I need brighter, more vibrant colors to give me energy and make cooking feel fun, which in turn encourages me to cook," says Karen. But, Karen adds, "Someone else may want their kitchen to feel less stimulating, so they might use soothing, less saturated colors to create a space where they feel more relaxed and want to spend more time cooking."

This comes back to why introverts and extroverts choose different paint palettes, and reflects the unique way in which we respond to our surroundings.

And it's not just the aesthetics that constitute the sensorial experience of your kitchen; it's also worth considering the social aspect of your space. Kitchen designer Johnny Grey is known for his ergonomic, people-led approach to kitchen design, and this is something he pays careful attention to when designing homes. He always encourages orienting your space so that you are "Cooking facing into the room, ideally on a working table, island or peninsula." Noting, "You can’t have a conversation with anyone when they are behind your back."

How to Design a Space You'll Love Cooking In

So, what does an anti-takeout kitchen look like?

At the top of your priorities should be designing to remove the friction from your space, making it as simple and seamless to use as possible.

One of the best ways to do this is through establishing kitchen zones. This is the approach Alicja adopts, saying, "It starts with creating intuitive, dedicated zones for tasks so everything you need is exactly where you use it, like storing spices and oils right next to the stove, or keeping knives and cutting boards by the prep sink." This, along with a logical layout where the sink, stove, and fridge are all within close proximity to one another, provides the perfect foundation for a kitchen you'll actually enjoy cooking in.

Building on from this base, you can begin to look more granularly at what makes your kitchen feel inviting. "Beyond the practical setup, wellbeing in the kitchen is deeply tied to where our eyes land while prepping and cooking," explains Alicja.

Thinking about sight lines and where your eyes will naturally fall while cooking can help you understand what makes that experience more or less enjoyable. "What do you see when you look up from the cutting board?" asks Alicja. "Having a window looking out onto the garden, a clear sight view into an open-plan living and dining room, or simply being able to comfortably interact with family during your cooking routine makes a massive difference." If your prep space looks directly onto a blank wall, chances are you won't look forward to cooking there.

This links back to Johnny's design approach, where fostering human interaction is central to the design process. As he says, "The key is to make cooking enjoyable. Thus, eye contact is vital to make cooking a sociable process." The kitchen should orient around the cook, with easy, uninterrupted paths of vision leading directly towards prep areas for a more sociable, laid-back feel.

Two-tone kitchens were the theme of 2025 and, at first, I welcomed the look. Any trend that embraces a more colorful, characterful space is no bad thing, and the kitchen has been a neglected area for far too long. Why would you not want to break up a run of matching cabinetry with a contrastive island that makes a distinctive accent? Well, a year on, I regret to say they're already looking dated and overdone.

Now, don't get me wrong — I accept that kitchen island trends are transitory. The pursuit of an ever-fashionable home is entirely unattainable, but there are certain trends that are more enduring than others. Painting every kitchen island a different color from the rest of your joinery just isn't one of them.

My main objection? Your kitchens are beginning to look like patchwork. While I'd favor this Frankenstein-esque jigsaw puzzle over a soulless, all-gray kitchen with utilitarian fittings, a bit of cohesion will always look visually cleaner and calmer in a functional space like a kitchen (especially when your space is small). I'm not alone in this sentiment, either. Halfway to 2027 and kitchen styles are already evolving again, with designers favoring a little more harmony this time round. Here's how they're planning kitchen designs that feel more sleek, unique, and timeless in 2026.

Why Shouldn't You Paint Your Kitchen Island a Contrasting Color?

Somewhere along the line, we seem to have collectively decided that our kitchen island ideas need to be different from our cabinets. There have been many iterations — from the contrasting countertops to fluted bases — but the trend has culminated more recently in two-tone kitchens where the cabinetry of an island is painted in a bright, contrasting color to the rest of the kitchen.

As we look towards 2027, however, they're starting to fall out of fashion already. When an island is painted in an entirely different color to your walls or cabinets, it can often make a kitchen look too busy, with too many elements competing for the eye (like a patchwork quilt).

Leah Hook, principal designer at Gray Oak Studio, says this can be especially problematic in small kitchens. "Here, a contrasting island can feel disjointed, making the space feel even smaller," she says.

There’s also the consideration of longevity. According to Charlotte Tilby, kitchen expert at LochAnna Kitchens, contrasting kitchen island colors are naturally more "trend-led". "Because the island is often one of the largest elements in the kitchen, changing it later can be difficult without affecting the wider scheme," she says. "A bold color can look striking initially, but more neutral and tonal choices tend to offer greater flexibility and longevity, especially with evolving tastes."

What Color Should an Island Be Instead?

So, where are kitchen island color trends in 2026 actually headed? A stylish kitchen doesn't necessarily hinge on the specific shade of the island itself, but simply on a hue that feels more harmonious with the surrounding space. Maybe it's a color found in your tiled backsplash, or a wood stain that complements your kitchen cabinet color. An island can still stand out, but the difference shouldn't feel stark or jarring.

"Recently, there has been a move towards more cohesive and considered kitchen schemes, where the cabinetry, walls and materials all work together," explains Al Bruce, kitchen designer at Olive & Barr. "Many clients are now looking for a softer, more timeless feel, rather than having the island stand out as a separate feature."

As mentioned, this doesn't mean a total absence of variation at all, but it does mean more tonal kitchen islands that work with a larger scheme, rather than against it. "Homeowners are experimenting with tonal shades, tactile finishes, statement worktops and metallic details to give the island its own identity," says Charlotte. "This creates depth and visual interest, while maintaining a cohesive overall scheme."

Whether you opt for a natural wooden island where the countertop does all the talking, or match your shaker cabinetry with an island that's just one shade lighter or darker, the idea is to create a kitchen that looks visually cohesive while still avoiding overly co-ordinated, uniform units.

How Can You Make a Kitchen Island Stand Out Without Painting It a Different Color?

There are plenty of ways to ensure your island still stands out without relying on a bold color contrast. Leah recommends opting for a different kitchen countertop material as a simple starting point. "Dramatic veining or even colorful stone on the island with a quieter choice on the perimeter brings the statement moment to the true center of the room," she says.

Consider the materiality, too. Dramatic stone islands can make a serious statement, or opt for a wooden base with an inlay accent, as pictured above. Choose a finish that complements the kitchen colors found on your walls, backsplash, and cabinets. "Timber detailing, open shelving, or even a different style of cabinetry can give the island its own character without having to introduce another color," adds Al. "A combination I particularly like is a wooden island in ash or oak paired with painted cabinetry."

One benefit of natural materials, as Charlotte points out, is that they will also prove more timeless. "Natural timber, beautifully veined stone, and fluted or reeded detailing are all great ways to introduce interest," she offers as examples. "The use of softer, tonal palettes, where different textures and materials are layered together, creates a kitchen that feels considered, cohesive, and individual."

When Can a Contrasting Kitchen Island Color Work?

Of course, you may still want to paint your island a different color from your kitchen cabinets, and I'm not denying that it can't ever work at all. Instead of choosing bold contrastive shades, however, consider a tonal shade that echoes your walls or cabinets.

"Contrasting islands can also be particularly effective in a larger, open-plan kitchen, where color can help define different areas without the need for physical dividers," says Charlotte. "The key is to ensure the island still connects to other elements within the room, such as the worktop, flooring, lighting, or hardware, so it feels like a considered part of the overall design rather than simply a statement piece."

If you want your island to act as the focal point of your kitchen, this is when you can be a little bolder with your color choice. "A darker island can help to anchor the space and draw attention towards the heart of the room," Al notes. "Equally, a lighter island can work well if you don't want it to dominate the scheme. Ultimately, it's about making sure the colors work with the rest of the room."

Kitchen trends come and go, but you want an island that stays stylish until your next renovation. Painting it a different color for the sole purpose of making your kitchen more chromatic won't be the best choice long-term. By all means make it a contrast to your cabinets, but don't be blindly led by the two-tone trend. Instead, think about materiality, subtle color shifts, and other ways of accenting your island that won't disrupt your existing color scheme.

We asked interior designers to weigh up the pros and cons of the most popular kitchen countertop materials, so you can find the right balance of practicality and style for your space.

1. Natural Stone

Few countertop materials have quite the same presence as natural stone. From richly veined marble kitchens to characterful quartzite and granite, every slab is unique, bringing natural color, movement, and a sense of permanence to a kitchen.

PROS

Character and individuality: "Natural stone like marble offers beautiful slabs to choose from," says Isabella Pacelli, junior designer at Roundhouse. "Each piece is different. Nothing has the same depth and beauty as a natural stone."

Sofia Lundgren, of Blakes London, agrees sense of character is key. "Natural stone brings an individuality to a kitchen that is difficult to replicate,: she says. "Every slab has its own variation, veining and character, giving the space a sense of depth and permanence."

Oozes luxury: "Marble has an undeniable sense of luxury and works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary schemes," adds Sofia.

"Every slab is unique; many can be book-matched for a really dramatic run, and the client gets to be genuinely involved - going to the yard, choosing their slab, seeing the veining they'll live with," adds Jayne Everett, creative director of Naked Kitchens. "That's part of the pleasure of a bespoke project. The range is vast, in pattern, color and price. Totally showstoppingly beautiful.

Some are hardwearing: Other materials, like granite and quartzite, are particularly hardwearing and heat-resistant. With the right care, natural stone can last for decades.

CONS

Heavy and expensive: Natural stone can be expensive and is also extremely heavy, so installation needs careful consideration.

May require sealing: "Some stones, particularly marble, are porous and require regular sealing,: warns Sofia Lundgren. "Marble can also stain, scratch and etch when exposed to acidic ingredients such as lemon and vinegar.

"For some, this is simply part of the beauty of a natural material; for others, it can make it less suited to a busy kitchen."

Can be prone to cracking: "Marble is porous," says Jayne. "Some materials carry fissures and can lead to cracking. It needs to be sourced carefully from reputable stone yards, slabs need to be selected and reserved early, and prices can be eye-watering. It rewards planning."

BEST FOR

Design-led kitchens where the worktop is intended to be a feature.

"Natural stone works particularly well in classic, country and high-end schemes," says Sofia. "If durability is the priority, granite or quartzite are excellent choices; if you're drawn to marble, embrace the fact that it will evolve and develop a patina with use."

2. Porcelain

Porcelain kitchen countertops have become an increasingly popular countertop choice, particularly for contemporary kitchens.

Available in remarkably convincing stone-look finishes as well as more minimal designs, it offers the high-end appearance of natural materials with a sleeker, engineered edge.

Durable and low maintenance: "Porcelain is an excellent choice for a busy kitchen, combining durability with relatively low maintenance," explains Sofia. "It is non-porous and highly resistant to staining, scratching, heat, and UV light, so it doesn't require sealing and is straightforward to keep clean.

Quality is improving: "Porcelain is improving constantly, partly because it's benefiting from the industry's move away from quartz," says Jayne Everett. "Three-dimensional porcelain is now coming through, which is fabulous for replicating marble convincingly. The choice is huge, and you get real consistency of pattern and tone between sheets."

"A lot of porcelains now have incredible depth and look closer to a natural stone than quartz," agrees Isabella Pacelli.

CONS

Lack of edge detailing: "Where the pattern is only printed on the surface, the veining doesn't run through the body of the material, so cut edges read as white. Worth checking before you specify."

Expensive: "Good-quality porcelain can be a significant investment and requires specialist fabrication and installation," says Sofia Lundgren. "While the surface is exceptionally hard-wearing, edges and corners can be more susceptible to chipping from a heavy knock.

"It also needs to be handled and installed correctly, particularly where cut-outs or complex details are involved."

BEST FOR

"A hard-wearing surface. A family who wants the beauty of a natural stone without the upkeep," says Isabella.

Sofia Lundgren agrees, adding: "It's great for busy family kitchens and contemporary spaces where practicality is as important as aesthetics.

"Porcelain is particularly appealing if you love the look of marble or natural stone but want a surface that is easier to live with day to day."

3. Wood

Wood kitchen ideas bring something to a kitchen that harder countertop materials often can't: instant warmth and character.

From pale oak to deep, richly grained walnut, a timber worktop can soften a contemporary scheme or add to the tactile, lived-in quality of a more traditional kitchen.

PROS

Timeless appeal: "Wood is one of the few worktop materials that genuinely warms a room," says Jayne Everett, Naked Kitchen's Creative Director.

Organic character: "It's a natural feature element in its own right, and it softens an otherwise hard-edged scheme," continues Jayne.

"It's also a fabulous food prep area - you can dedicate an area purely to chopping and prep and ages gracefully."

Renewable and repairable: When sourced responsibly, wood can be one of the more sustainable countertop choices, particularly if you look for FSC-certified timber. As well as being renewable, a quality wooden worktop can have a very long lifespan, as scratches and signs of wear can often be sanded out and the surface refinished rather than replaced.

CONS

The upkeep. "Wood has to be oiled and cared for regularly to maintain its look," says IsabellaPacelli.

Jayne Everett confirms wood must be properly sealed from the outset. "That's non-negotiable," she says. "Most of the concerns around timber is about maintenance, which is totally mitigated if the timber worktop is sealed correctly at the start."

BEST FOR

"Wood is ideal for areas where you want to break up an expanse of stone or introduce warmth into a cooler palette," says Jayne Everett.

4. Stainless Steel

Once associated predominantly with professional kitchens, stainless steel has firmly entered the design conversation at home.

Its cool, reflective finish feels crisp and contemporary, while the patina it develops over time can give a kitchen a surprisingly relaxed, characterful quality.

And, if you didn't know, industrial kitchens are quietly getting cool again.

PROS

Durable and easy to clean: "Stainless steel is the ultimate workhorse and has earned its place in professional kitchens for good reason," says Sofia Lundgren of Blakes London. "Hygienic, non-porous, heat-resistant and highly durable, it is easy to clean and can withstand the demands of serious cooking."

Creates an architectural aesthetic: "Bespoke fabrication can allow the worktop, sink and splashback to flow together almost seamlessly, creating a strong architectural look.

Sustainable: Stainless steel's sustainability credentials lie largely in its longevity and recyclability. It's an exceptionally durable material that can remain in use for decades, while stainless steel can be recycled at the end of its life and new products can contain significant amounts of recycled material - making it a strong choice for a kitchen designed with longevity in mind.

CONS

Can feel cold: "Stainless steel has a distinctly utilitarian character, which can feel cold or industrial if it isn't balanced with softer, warmer materials," says Sofia.

Scratches easily: It will show fingerprints, water marks, and scratches, particularly when new. However, this is also part of its appeal: over time, the surface develops a softer, lived-in patina that can add to its character.

BEST FOR

Serious cooks and contemporary or industrial-style kitchens. "Stainless steel works particularly well when paired with timber cabinetry, natural stone or other tactile materials, helping to soften its more utilitarian character," adds Sofia Lundgren.

5. Quartz

Quartz countertops offer the polished look and substantial feel of stone, but with the consistency and practicality of an engineered surface.

Available in everything from quiet, barely-there finishes to dramatic marble-inspired veining, it's an incredibly versatile choice that can work just as comfortably in classic kitchens as it does in sleek contemporary spaces.

Quartz is being slowly phased out of the home market, for issues involved in the material's production process, rather than anything to do with its qualities. Similar materials are coming to market that no longer have these issues.

PROS

Large variety of choice: Quarts offers an enormous variety of colors, patterns, and, increasingly, textures.

Durable: "It's hard-wearing and can be super-durable and stain-resistant. Being man-made, durability is a top priority," says Roundhouse's Isabella Pacelli.

Affordable: "Quartz is widely available and sits at an accessible price point, which is why it's been the go-to material for so long," says Jayne Everett.

CONS

Lower wow factor: Some quartz can lack depth and doesn’t have that same wow factor as natural stone.

Silica health concerns: "The industry conversation has changed significantly around quartz," says Jayne Everett. "The health risk isn't to the homeowner; an installed worktop is entirely safe. It's to fabricators cutting and polishing the material, where respirable crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis."

"We strongly encourage anyone specifying it now to ask their supplier directly about silica content and fabrication practice."

BEST FOR

Worktops and splashbacks where consistency and budget matter most .

6. Laminate

Laminate has come a long way from being simply the budget countertop option. Today's designs can convincingly recreate everything from richly veined stone to timber and more unusual finishes, making it an increasingly versatile choice for achieving a particular look without the price tag of the real material.

PROS

Affordable and versatile: Laminate is one of the most budget-friendly countertop materials, while the huge variety of finishes means it can replicate everything from marble and terrazzo to timber surprisingly convincingly.

Easy to live with: It's non-porous, straightforward to clean, and doesn't require sealing or the regular maintenance associated with some natural surfaces.

CONS

Less resistant to heat and damage: Hot pans can scorch or damage laminate, and although good-quality versions are fairly hard-wearing, the surface can scratch, chip, or be marked with heavy use.

Difficult to repair: Unlike wood or some solid-surface materials, significant damage can't simply be sanded or polished away. Once chipped, burnt, or badly scratched, a section - or potentially the whole countertop - may need replacing.

BEST FOR

Laminate is durable, low maintenance, and low cost, yet has poor heat resistance, and repairs can be challenging," says Alex Alonso, founder of Mr Alex Tate. "It's ideal for lower-budget projects or less-used spaces like laundry rooms."

Ultimately, the best kitchen countertop material is the one that strikes the right balance between how you want your kitchen to look and how you need it to perform.

Natural stone might win on individuality, stainless steel on hard-working durability, and wood on warmth, while engineered and more affordable surfaces can offer impressive practicality with fewer maintenance demands.

Think realistically about everything from your budget to how much upkeep you're prepared to embrace — and remember that a countertop doesn't necessarily need to remain pristine to be beautiful. Often, the surfaces that age, patinate, and tell the story of a well-used kitchen are the ones that give it the most character.

For years, painted cabinetry has dominated kitchens, but in 2026 it's the materials themselves taking center stage.

Designers are treating cabinet doors as opportunities to introduce texture, craftsmanship and personality, swapping flat finishes for sculptural timber, expressive veneers, industrial metals and richly patinated surfaces.

The result is kitchen trends that feel layered, tactile and deeply considered, where every material contributes to the overall story, and cabinetry that feels more like bespoke furniture than fitted joinery.

"Texture and layering are really shaping how we're designing bespoke cabinetry for 2026," confirms Jayne Everett, creative director of Naked Kitchens.

"Rather than sticking to one finish throughout a project, we're seeing clients embrace multiple textures within the same space to build depth and character."

Whether you're planning a full renovation or simply looking for inspiration, these are the five unexpected materials set to define kitchen cabinets in 2026.

1. Carved Wood

Perfectly smooth cabinetry is giving way to timber finishes with depth, texture and a handcrafted feel. And yes, fluted and reeded cabinetry has been popular for a while and remains so, but designers are now also experimenting with sculptural or carved wood for a more intricate finish.

Here, the etched oak doors draw on a traditional Polish joinery technique, transforming the cabinetry into a sculptural focal point rather than simply a backdrop. It's part of a wider shift towards kitchens that engage the senses, where craftsmanship and tactile materials take precedence over flawless, flat finishes.

"The cabinetry doors are made out of etched oak, which is a traditional technique found in Polish joinery craftsmanship," says Kasia Kronberger, founder and principal designer of Studio Bosko. "I chose them for this project for their tactile quality. This kitchen sits in a home designed around tactility and connection with materials."

"The texture of the cabinetry juxtaposes with glossy wall tiles on the backsplash and smooth granite countertop. Each surface is different, with all of them, adding a mix of textures, resulting in depth and warmth - something that is very on-trend for 2026."

2. Burl Wood

Burl wood is enjoying something of a renaissance, but it's not just on furniture.

Designers are embracing its dramatic figuring as an alternative to painted kitchen cabinetry, bringing warmth, individuality and a sense of craftsmanship to kitchens.

However, instead of highly-varnished incarnations, why not use it in a muted, matte finish? It feels quietly luxurious rather than retro, showing that characterful timber can be just as impactful as a statement color. It's the perfect example of quiet luxury, where natural materials and artisanal finishes are replacing overt decoration.

The warmth of the burl wood is beautifully offset by sleek sanded stainless steel upper cabinets, another material enjoying a resurgence in contemporary kitchens. The cool metal introduces a clean, architectural contrast to the organic grain, reflecting a wider move towards kitchens that combine tactile natural materials with sleek industrial finishes.

"The burl wood was chosen as a surface material, together with stainless steel, to create a kitchen that is monochromatic yet textured and layered, instead of minimalistic," explains Kasia.

3. Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is stepping beyond the professional kitchen and into the heart of the home ever more right now. While it has long been prized for its durability and hygienic qualities, designers are now embracing its softly reflective finish as a way to introduce contrast and balance alongside warmer materials.

In this scheme above, the sleek steel base cabinets are paired with rich timber joinery and decorative tiled splashbacks, creating a layered look that feels inviting rather than utilitarian. Visually, it grounds the kitchen and keeps the room feeling light, while the walnut upper cabinetry adds warmth and display space.

Unlike lacquered finishes, stainless steel subtly ages with use, which many designers see as adding character rather than detracting from it. Heat-resistant, easy to wipe clean and exceptionally durable, it's also a great functional choice for hardworking kitchens. "Metal is having a real moment, particularly stainless steel, which brings an industrial, earthy edge when layered against other materials," says Jayne Everett, Creative Director of Naked Kitchens.

"Scalloped, reeded or timber profiles genuinely come alive when combined with contrasting materials like these; the interplay of light and shadow across the texture is what creates that layered depth," the designer adds.

4. Patinated Copper

Copper is no longer confined to taps and pendant lights. And, while shiny-copper-everything is firmly in our interior rearview, designers are increasingly using patinated copper as a decorative finish for cabinet doors, allowing its richly textured surface to become the room's focal point.

The organic variations in tone soften the metallic finish, while dark timber and natural stone prevent it from feeling overly glamorous. The result is a kitchen that feels warm, tactile and quietly opulent.

Why have copper and patinated metals become so appealing for 2026? "What draws people to copper isn't the metal itself; it's what it does over time, provided it's left unsealed rather than lacquered," says Charlie Smallbone, founder of Ledbury Studio.

"Copper oxidizes, zinc develops a soft, chalky bloom, and both keep changing for as long as the kitchen is used. That's the appeal: a finish that visibly belongs to the people living with it, rather than one frozen at the moment of installation," the designer adds.

5. Creative Veneers

Creative patterned veneers are giving traditional timber cabinetry a contemporary update, and are proof that cabinet doors themselves are becoming canvases for design.

Veneers are no longer simply a way to showcase beautiful timber; they're becoming a medium for pattern and artistry in their own right. By laying strips of oak in contrasting directions, designers are creating oversized geometric compositions that transform cabinet doors into architectural features.

The result is subtle yet impactful, allowing the natural beauty of the wood grain to shine while adding rhythm and movement across an entire run of cabinetry. It's an elegant way to introduce visual interest without relying on color or embellishment.

"This kitchen is made entirely from English and European oak, book-matched across the doors, fluted on the end of the island, and used to create a design motif on the tall cabinets, completely hiding the practical fridge, freezer and larder behind," explains Charlie Smallbone.

While these finishes may feel unexpected, they all point to the same shift in kitchen design: a move towards spaces defined by texture, craftsmanship and materiality rather than color alone.

As we bid adieu to the white kitchens of the 2000s and grow tired of the green ones plastered across our social media feeds for the last decade, we're all on the hunt for the next go-to shade. 1. Kittiwake by Farrow & Ball

The first time I saw this shade used in a kitchen, I immediately had to know exactly what paint color it was. Farrow & Ball's Kittiwake isn't one of its most well-known shades, but it should be. There's such a beautiful clarity to this sky blue shade, like a true breath of fresh air. It's crisp and refreshing, while a subtle touch of black pigment keeps it from feeling too bright.

It's the kind of color you could never tire of, and would work beautifully in practically any room. "I had used Kittiwake in a bedroom a few years ago and loved it," shares designer Maureen Gomez. It wasn't until her clients specifically requested a blue kitchen that it occurred to her how well Kittiwake would work in this setting.

"Kittiwake creates a calm, uplifting atmosphere that works beautifully in a kitchen, particularly one with plenty of natural light," she adds, and in this home, with a large skylight in the kitchen and plenty of natural light flowing, this felt particularly significant. But, even in darker, north-facing kitchens, Kittiwake can still be a good choice. "Unlike some cooler blues, it doesn't feel clinical," notes Maureen.

In terms of styling, Kittiwake pairs beautifully with natural materials, warm tones, and textured finishes, with Maureen listing: "Warm timber, aged brass, natural stone or terracotta, and off-whites" specifically.

2. De Nimes by Farrow & Ball

One of the better-known shades amongst Farrow & Ball's blue paints, De Nimes is a sophisticated, understated blue, with a subtly smoky hue. Comparable to denim, this is perhaps the most neutral a blue can get and, as such, is remarkably easy to use in the home.

This neutrality is exactly what appealed to Heide Hendricks, from Hendricks Churchill. In search of a good white kitchen alternative, Heide landed on this gentle blue. "We wanted to avoid a white kitchen to prevent the space from feeling sterile or lacking coziness. We looked for a saturated color that could still recede and avoid overwhelming the room with too dramatic an effect," she explains, "De Nimes ticked all of those boxes perfectly."

What makes this Farrow & Ball blue kitchen paint color so unique is its ability to appear so understated and subtle, while still being a relatively strong color. Looking at it in the tin, you perhaps wouldn't think of this deep bluey-gray as a neutral kitchen color. But once it's used across the walls or kitchen cabinets, it immediately makes sense. "Even though it is a saturated color, it serves as a neutral backdrop due to its calming mood," Heide adds.

3. Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball

Out of all of Farrow & Ball's blue paints for kitchens, Oval Room Blue is described as the most 'blackened', with a strong gray undertone. While this may sound heavy or intense, somehow, it instead translates as something deeply comforting.

Instead of heaviness, these black pigments bring a depth to the shade. It was this sense of depth that made the shade stand out to designer Maddy Minerva. "We wanted a blue that felt timeless, while adding depth and character to the space," she shares.

Named after the sitting rooms of the late 18th century, there's a historic quality to this shade, which works particularly well in rustic, farmhouse kitchens or alongside more traditional kitchen features. Despite this historic aspect, the shade still feels timeless, Maddy says.

While describing a blue shade as warm may seem slightly oxymoronic, in the case of Oval Room Blue, there is a genuine legitimacy to the claim. It feels far cozier than you'd expect from a gray-toned blue, shifting with the light to feel even more inviting. "Oval Room Blue changes beautifully throughout the day," explains Maddy.

This shifting tonality and naturally calming nature is exactly what makes it such a good fit for kitchens. "It adds warmth and depth to what is often a very practical room, creating a calm, inviting atmosphere," says Maddy.

It's also remarkably easy to style, and "pairs effortlessly with natural materials like timber, stone, and brass," says Maddy. Because it's such an adaptable color, with a darker kitchen worktop, the shade will appear brighter in comparison, while it could equally be used to add depth to a brighter, marble kitchen.

A good kitchen countertop can last you over three decades, so it's well worth picking a color that you'll be sure to love for the years to come. But, in order to know the colors worth considering, you'll need to know which ones are best avoided first.

When you're planning a kitchen renovation, there's a whole wealth of decisions you'll have to make, and chief among them is your kitchen countertops. One of the most expensive elements in your design, this is one of those choices you'll want to get right the first time around. After all, there's nothing worse than investing your time and money into a brand new kitchen, just to discover your counters have already gone out of style two months later.

To protect you from that dreaded fate, I asked the experts what colors they've seen fall out of style this year, and their answers were perhaps more illuminating than you might expect. Reflecting a wider trend in design, the designers' answers all point towards a general shift towards warmer, softer tones and finishes in homes today, moving away from the harsh, stark look we once favored.

1. Stark Whites

Once a reliable go-to, in recent years, all-white kitchens have had quite the transformation, and not in a positive way. Having once been favored for the bright, crisp finish they offered, nowadays, you're more likely to hear a white countertop described as 'sterile' than 'stylish'.

"Cool-toned bright white countertops are no longer looking modern in many kitchens," agrees interior designer Swati Goorha. With a design style characterized by her layered use of color and texture, a white counter provides the opposite effect to what Swati aims to create in her projects.

One of the most popular modern kitchen designs in the early 2000s, in 2026, they can quickly look like a dated reminder of a bygone era, completely devoid of that modern sleekness they once offered.

While today's kitchen trends are so dominated by warm colors and earthy, natural textures, the smooth, crisp finish of a white countertop can come off as harsh or sterile.

The kitchen designs of today focus on the room's role in family life, and are designed accordingly. Explaining this, Ntola Obazee, from Kutchenhaus, says, "The kitchen is the heart of the home, so we know people like to create a space that is warmer and inviting." And, unfortunately, a white countertop can often have the adverse effect, making your kitchen feel unwelcoming.

2. Cool Greys

Similarly, the experts warn of a move away from cool grey-toned surfaces, too. Another favorite of the early 2000s, in a design world dominated by earthy color palettes and warm, soft tones, these icy greys feel stark and unwelcoming in comparison.

There's data to back this up, too, with Häfele's Homes for Living 2026 report showing that light grey has fallen from 16% to 13%, with similar declines for dark grey and metallic finishes in kitchens, too.

"There is a clear shift," agrees Tiago Carvalho, interior designer at Main, the kitchen design specialists. "We're moving away from the cool greys and stark whites that have dominated kitchens for so long, towards warmer, more tactile finishes that make the kitchen feel less clinical and more considered."

In modern kitchens, cooler-toned finishes read more sterile and harsh than they once did, and feel incongruous with the general direction of interior design trends.

Of course, this does not mean all grey counters are now out of style. When done in a richly textured, natural stone, or with warm undertones, this neutral finish can still feel super chic.

3. Polished Black Finishes

At the other end of the spectrum, while white counters are rejected based on their sterility, black countertops, too, are deemed too harsh for the kitchens of today.

Much of this comes from the finish and materials that you'll typically find with a black worktop, with designer Ana Li from Linq Kitchen saying, "High-gloss black polished granite and dark polished quartz countertops with stark contrasting white veining have quickly fallen out of favor."

While the contrast of a black stone with white veining was once considered striking and cool, nowadays, the effect can seem too stark, lending your kitchen an overly dramatic effect, as opposed to the quietly dramatic kitchens that are currently in style.

In addition to these aesthetic issues, Ana also highlights the growing concerns around the practicality of this countertop finish. Unlike the gentle matte finishes popular today, these highly polished surfaces can be troublingly unforgiving. "Their shiny plastic-like sheen highlights fingerprints and smudges and creates harsh visual contrast against custom modern kitchen cabinetry," she says. As one of the most highly used rooms in the home, for many, ensuring their kitchen materials are as low-maintenance as possible is a key priority, and sadly, many black counters fail to meet the mark.

There seem to be certain things we have, over time, ended up taking as a given in our homes, simply accepting them as something we should have rather than questioning whether they still have a purpose in terms of our more modern lifestyles.

Most of us have now come to realize that there are contemporary ways of sidestepping all of these thanks to the fast-paced world of ever-evolving kitchen trends, and yet there seem to be certain features that have slipped through the net — kitchen upstands being one of them.

Kitchen upstands are designed to neaten up the joint between countertop and wall and to offer a little protection — but are they really still necessary? I've certainly been questioning my own just lately and, with a kitchen remodel on the horizon, I'm keen to look into other options. I spoke to a range of top design experts, and here's what they had to say.

Are Kitchen Upstands Still in Fashion?

If, like me, you are currently busy drawing up a list of all your favourite modern kitchen ideas in a bid to ensure your new space remains looking fresh and relevant for many years to come, you really need to pay attention to the finer details.

While kitchen upstands, also sometimes referred to as 3" or 4" backsplashes, remain a common feature of many kitchens, according to Shelly Yoder, a project designer at Next Stage Design + Build, the way in which they are being viewed and used is changing. "An upstand made sense in an era when the goal was simply to protect the wall behind the counter. As a design element, though, it's always been a compromise: too short to be a real visual statement, too present to be invisible. There are only a few instances where an upstand still makes sense in a design, such as breaking up the pattern of the wall and the kitchen counter. In most of the kitchens we design today, clients are choosing one of two directions instead, and both look significantly more considered."

Camilla Masi, interior designer at Otto Tiles & Design, agrees that upstands aren't necessarily something to be avoided at all costs, but rather a feature that needs careful consideration in order to elevate rather than date a kitchen. "I don't think upstands have fallen out of fashion, but I do think the way we're using them has changed. The standard 100mm upstand is certainly less popular than it once was, particularly in more contemporary kitchens where the preference is to take the stone or tile further up the wall as a backsplash or entire feature wall. It creates a cleaner, more seamless look and allows the material to become a much stronger design feature."

It appears, then, that traditional 100mm, straight upstands are increasingly being shunned in favor of a range of more modern alternatives, although interior designer Caroline Montague is keen to point out that rather than being an outdated kitchen trend, it can be more a case of using them in a more considered way. "What can make a kitchen look dated is using an upstand almost by default, without considering what else is happening on the wall. I would never use a stone upstand and then begin a tiled backsplash immediately above it, for example. For me, it should be one or the other, never both."

"I don’t think there is one universal replacement for an upstand," continues Caroline. "In some kitchens, a marble or stone upstand will still look entirely appropriate. In another, tiles taken directly to the countertop, or a durable painted wall may feel cleaner and more contemporary. It depends on the architecture of the room, the materials being used, and how practical the surface needs to be. A traditional or more layered kitchen may suit a stone upstand beautifully, whereas a simpler contemporary scheme may benefit from leaving the wall uninterrupted. My approach would be to choose one clear solution: an upstand, a backsplash, or sometimes nothing at all. The kitchen begins to look dated when several different treatments are combined where one would have been enough."

That said, if, like me, you are seeking out alternatives to the standard kitchen upstand, these are the design ideas the experts I spoke to suggested instead.

1. A slab backsplash

Perhaps one of the most popular features to emerge in recent years is the slab backsplash, where the countertop material, or another solid surface, is extended right up the wall from the counter — perfect for creating the quietly dramatic kitchen trend that is currently so popular.

Leila Touwen, co-founder of Pluck, explains just why this is such a good alternative to the standard kitchen upstand. "The continuation of a countertop into the upstand creates a seamless transition from the flat plane to the vertical. If you have opted for a particularly special countertop material, say marble or terrazzo, it is an opportunity to show a little more of this and to make a statement with that material so that it has a bigger role in the room’s scheme. How high you go is up for debate — 100mm is standard, but we now frequently design kitchens with upstands higher than this, at which point the upstand becomes a backsplash."

Shelly Yoder agrees that the slab backsplash can make a stunning modern kitchen feature. "A continuous run of stone or quartz from the counter surface up to the upper cabinets, with no visible seam or grout line, is the cleanest possible resolution of the counter-to-wall transition. It works beautifully in kitchens with darker elements especially. The uninterrupted material plane gives the space a tailored, almost furniture-like quality that an upstand or even a tiled backsplash can't replicate."

Ash McCullough, lead designer at Blakes London, goes on to explain that this is definitely her preferred way of making a statement in the kitchen. "When it comes to upstands, we favour taking the chosen material as far up the wall as the budget allows. Rather than stopping at a small upstand, we'll often continue the stone or tile to a decorative shelf or the underside of a wall unit before transitioning back to painted walls. Where possible, we love to carry the material all the way to the ceiling, creating a more architectural and elevated feel. Extending the material in this way allows its beauty, texture and character to become a defining feature of the space without overwhelming the overall scheme. It's an approach that works equally well in both contemporary and traditional kitchens, adding a sense of permanence, craftsmanship and quiet luxury that never goes out of style."

2. A Full Wall of Tiles

While kitchen tile trends might come and go, this is one material that rarely falls out of favor entirely and, thanks to the enormous range of sizes, shapes colours and designs on offer, tile can offer up the potential for creating some really stunning alternatives to the upstand.

"A full-height tiled backsplash that runs continuously from countertop to upper cabinet is the most common replacement we see, and when the tile is well chosen, it transforms the wall behind the counter into an intentional design feature rather than a protective afterthought," picks up Shelly Yoder. "In one of our recent projects, a contemporary kitchen with white flat-front cabinetry, a textured ceramic tile was taken the full height behind the range, creating a visual anchor for the space that an upstand simply couldn't achieve. In another, a bold geometric yellow tile extended from counter height all the way to the ceiling as a feature wall. Neither of these reads as a solution to a problem. They read as design decisions."

"If tiles are being used, I would bring them directly down to the countertop rather than adding a separate strip of stone beneath them," advises Caroline Montague. "The tiles then become the wall treatment in their own right, rather than competing with another material."

3. Carved and Scalloped Designs Over Straight

Sometimes, simply thinking beyond standard straight lines is all that's needed in order to bring an upstand up to date and more in-line with modern interior design trends — and curved, decorative upstands can become design features in their own right.

"I've seen some beautiful interpretations of the upstand recently," reveals Camilla Masi. "I particularly love marble upstands where the exposed ends have been finished with a soft scalloped profile rather than a straight cut. Paired with a bullnosed countertop, it introduces a subtle decorative detail that feels crafted rather than purely functional.

"I've also seen designs that incorporate a slim ledge and extend higher up the wall," adds Camilla. "At that point, I'd probably describe it as a backsplash rather than an upstand, but it's a good example of how the detail has evolved rather than disappeared."

4. Nothing at all

There is an argument these days, with a wider range of durable and super-resilient countertop materials, superior kitchen installation techniques and hardwearing paint finishes, that there is no need for any kind of upstand at all.

If you're after a clean, fuss-free finish and want to indulge in a few of the latest kitchen color trends too, this is an approach Caroline Montague highly recommends. "An upstand is no longer essential in every kitchen. There are so many durable, washable paints available now that it is perfectly possible to take a painted wall directly down to the worktop, particularly in areas that are not exposed to constant splashes or cooking.

"That can create a very clean result, although the paint still needs to be suitable for a hardworking kitchen and the junction between the worktop and wall must be finished properly."

Upstand vs Backplash — What's the Difference?

It is important to recognize that upstands and backsplashes are two quite different things — similar, yes, but not the same.

Upstands tend to be made from the same material as the countertop and usually rise up just 100mm, 150mm at a push. They are there primarily to hide the juncture where wall and counter meet.

Backsplashes, on the other hand, extend much higher than this — often right up to the underside of open shelves or wall cabinets, or even to the ceiling. When I think of beautiful kitchen knives with a reputation that precedes them, I think of ornate santokus. A traditional Japanese knife that's named after its three uses — slicing, dicing, and mincing — across three key food types — meat, fish, and vegetables. And while these knives are crafted to work hard, there are specific rules for maintenance that help them live up to their standing.

The way you store kitchen knives is one of these main principles. Using a traditional saya to protect the blade, avoiding leather wrapping, thoroughly drying before stowing away, and storing them in safe, accessible locations rather than haphazardly throwing them in a drawer are some Japanese lessons to take into your own kitchen.

But before you adopt them into your knife care routine, here's how these tips will help you make the most of your cooking arsenal.

1. Never Store Them Loose in a Drawer

"Japanese blades are particularly fine and sharp, so allowing them to knock against other utensils can chip or dull the edge," says Leonard Tanyag, executive head chef at Los Mochis.

"Consider using a sleek wooden knife block, a magnetic rack, or even an individual blade guard to keep them protected." The Base by Material is a design-y example of how to store your knives in a considered way.

2. Use a Traditional Saya

Leonard tells me that a saya, a fitted wooden sheath, is traditionally used to protect Japanese knives. "It shields the blade without pressing against the cutting edge and is particularly useful if the knife needs to be stored in a drawer or transported."

Although it can be quite tough to find a saya after the fact, if you're keen to refresh your knives, buying one that comes with this wooden cover is the way to go. For example, the Flame Utility Knife from Katana Saya.

3. Avoid Leather for Long-Term Storage

Now that we've established the best case for knife covers, Leonard points out that, for the knives in your current collection without a saya, storing them in leather is best avoided.

"Leather can retain moisture, so it is better suited to transporting knives than storing them for extended periods," he explains. "Hence why breathable wood is preferable for everyday storage."

As kitchen utensils worth holding onto, making these small changes to how you store them can make all the difference in how they support your cooking and how long they last in your home.

4. Safe and Accessible Storage

Another insightful Japanese lesson in kitchen knife storage is storing it in a safe and accessible space. "A knife should sit securely without pressure on its edge," says Leonard.

A few years on from the trend's conception, our obsession with the quiet luxury aesthetic is yet to die down. Elegant but not showy, welcoming while still elevated, it's everything we hope to emulate in our interiors, especially in the kitchen. But it seems the designers are one step ahead of us: while we've all been focusing on the best materials and color palettes, the experts have found a whole new wave of quiet luxury in the kitchen, and this time, it's all about your appliances.

The quiet luxury kitchen is all about the intersection between chic and discreet, and that applies to appliances just as much as the design. You could have the most luxurious marble counters and the most spotless tiled floors, and it would all mean nothing if your appliances aren't up to scratch.

These appliances aren't just about elegant, seamless design though; they're also about premium performance. And the top designers have shared the appliances they're seeing in every quiet luxury kitchen at the moment.

1. Extra Width Fridges

Sometimes, bigger is better. Or, at least, it is when it comes to your fridge.

A step up from the average refrigerator, nowadays, kitchen designers are noticing a growing desire for extra-wide fridges in luxury homes.

Explaining the shift driving this kitchen appliance trend, Richard Moore, creative director of luxury kitchen design brand Martin Moore, shares, "We have seen a marked increase in our clients entertaining at home and multi-generational cooking, often inspired by gap-year travels. As a result, we often specify capacious 1200-wide fridges to store a multitude of specialist, fresh ingredients."

These extra-wide designs, often described as 'American-style fridges', don't just offer a larger capacity; they often boast various other features, too, like integrated ice-dispensers and even wifi connectivity, if you opt for a smart kitchen tech design.

Post-pandemic, hosting has become more central to the way we design our kitchens than ever before, and these extra-large fridges are a testament to that fact. Plus, as fresh ingredients become more of a commodity, this too is being reflected in the world of luxury kitchen design.

2. Integrated Tech

So much of what makes the quiet luxury aesthetic is the understated elegance of it all. Nothing is too obvious or too showy. It's all about discretion. And nothing epitomizes that quite like an integrated appliance.

When comparing freestanding vs built-in kitchen appliances, built-in designs will always create a sleeker, minimalist kitchen feel, with the opportunity to design uninterrupted runs of kitchen cabinetry.

As Bronwen Lee, designer at Harvey Jones, explains, "Integrated designs help maintain a calm, uncluttered aesthetic, allowing the architecture of the space to take center stage."

Integrated appliances seamlessly blend in with their surroundings, their functionality hidden behind a pristine cover. This has become particularly popular with the rise of open-plan living, with people increasingly driven to create kitchens that don't necessarily look like kitchens.

“There's a growing appreciation for appliances that blend seamlessly into the wider design, reflecting a broader move towards refined interiors that are designed around how people live rather than how a room should be used," explains Bronwen.

This is being reflected in the launches from top kitchen appliance brands, too. Just take Miele's stunning Beige Pearl oven as an example; with its lovely soft neutral finish and sleek design, it's a clear expression of the market demand for more seamless, elegant-looking appliances.

3. Invisible Hobs

"Another example of hidden appliances is the invisible hob," says Isabella Pacelli, a designer from Roundhouse. A step beyond integrated appliances, these undercover invisible hobs are the future of luxury kitchen design.

Made using Dekton kitchen worktops, these futuristic hobs aren't just discreet; they're invisible. Typically installed within the kitchen island, the hob is completely undetectable when not in use, making it a particularly appealing choice for those who want their kitchen to resemble a swanky home bar rather than a functional cooking area.

In a similar vein, Isabella also notes the growing popularity of vented hobs, drawing particular attention to the circular, integrated extraction style used by Bora. "Vented hobs eliminate the issue of unsightly extraction hood systems, especially when a client wants their hob to be situated on the island," explains Isabella. "They are incredibly efficient and have become a favourite in luxury kitchen designs."

4. Range Ovens

One of the most iconic traditional kitchen features, the range oven was once thought of as a feature exclusive to countryside, rustic kitchens, but over recent years, we've seen these designs pop up in just about every luxury kitchen project around, and we couldn't be happier for it.

From La Cornue's stunning Parisian ovens to the classically English look of an AGA, there are countless options within this category, each containing its own unique charm. If you're looking for a "custom design to match your bespoke kitchen furniture," Bronwen says, "Officine Gullo have a wonderful range of colors and finishes," while a Lacanche is ideal for creating a luxe, chef kitchen effect.

These ovens are growing in popularity, especially within large, family homes, where the kitchen is designed to be the center of family life. There's something inviting and timeless about a range oven, and it brings a vintage warmth to any space.

As much as I still love the look of a quiet luxury kitchen, there's a new trend that's entered the scene that could steal its spot: introducing the quietly dramatic kitchen. Taking the foundations of the quiet luxury aesthetic and adding a little extra oomph, we can't get enough of these kitchen designs.

We all know how important it is to meet our daily water intake requirements, but that doesn't mean it's always easy. I, for one, am ashamed to admit how frequently I'll reach the end of the day and realize I've barely had more than a cup of water since breakfast. But it's not just the amount of water that is important; we also have to consider the quality of water we're drinking. It can get to be a lot to think about, so finding a product that makes it all easier for you can be a real game changer. And this is exactly why I was so keen to test out the British Berkefeld Gravity System.

A 2024 study led by Imperial College London found that, across the UK, our tap water contains traces of PFAS, also known as 'forever chemicals'. While the levels remain within UK and EU safety limits, we are yet to understand the potential long-term effects of consistent exposure to these chemicals, making filtration systems like this all the more appealing for our modern kitchens. Not only do these water filters claim to remove PFAS, but they also reduce other common contaminants like chlorine and microplastics. Plus, it's a far more cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice than bottled water.

But while there are countless water filter options out there, few are stylish enough to satisfy our design-obsessed team, which is why this sleek stainless steel option caught our attention. But, of course, those good looks mean nothing if the product doesn't deliver on quality, too. So, I put it to the test to find out exactly whether this design is worth your money.

How Does It Work?

So, first things first, let's get into exactly how this filtration system actually works.

As the name suggests, this design uses gravity to provide you with fresh, filtered water, using water from your kitchen sink. Formed of two distinct chambers, designed to sit on top of one another, the Ultra Sterasyl® ceramic filter sits neatly within the upper one, filtering the water before it can drip through to the chamber beneath, much like the Endless Rhythm Water Dispenser.

While the drip-down gravity system is clever, the real magic lies in the ceramic filter within. Constructed from a ceramic microfilter with carbon granules, these inserts claim to remove 99.99% of common contaminants, including bacteria, chlorine, lead, PFAS, cryptosporidium, and more, while retaining all the healthy minerals, leaving you with great-tasting, high-quality drinking water.

The idea is that the upper chamber, with the ceramic filter fitted within, is filled with tap water. This water then passes through the filter, removing any impurities, before dripping into the attached lower chamber, eventually leaving you with a full chamber of pure, filtered water, no plumbing or complicated installation necessary.

The Set-Up Process

Eager to give the product as fair a test as possible, I carefully studied the instruction manual before attempting to set it up. At first, the instructions were clear enough, and the entire system took less than three minutes to put together. All you really have to do is screw the filter in place within the upper chamber using the equipment provided. There was no need to use any additional tools, and the screw-in system felt super secure, so it's perfect for those of us who struggle with even the easiest kitchen DIYs.

From there, all that's left to do is to mount the upper chamber onto the lower one and fill it with water. The manual instructs you to fill the water to just below the rim, which is straightforward enough, though I did feel that some additional information regarding the volume of water would have been helpful. Even just a minimum requirement would have been appreciated, as it was unclear whether the system would work as effectively when only partially filled.

Once the chambers are securely stacked on top of one another and the accompanying lid is placed on top, your water system is ready for use. The manual notes that, due to the carbon granules within the ceramic filter, the first batch of water is likely to contain dark particles and should be disposed of without being consumed, and the lower chamber should be thoroughly cleaned before being used again. I didn't encounter any signs of debris or black specs after the first pass-through, so once you've done that, your system will be completely ready to go.

What I Noticed

From there, I was ready to fully explore the product, and I'll tell you now, my feelings were mixed.

While the setup instructions were clear enough, there isn't an outline of how long I should expect the filtration process to take. The manual does state that the maximum flow rate will be achieved once the filter is fully saturated, which could take 2-3 chambers worth of water, but without a suggestion of what maximum flow rate should look like, it's tricky to know.

You'll also have to lift the lid off to check how far along the process is, rather than there being a visual aid to communicate exactly how much water has been passed through, and how much is left to go.

On average, I found that it takes around 45 minutes to one hour for the full liter to pass through. Though it is possible that my filter is yet to reach maximum flow rate, and once it has, this number could go down. The average person is recommended to drink around 3 liters of water a day, which, with this machine, would take quite a while to achieve.

While this system is relatively petite in circumference and is perfectly suitable for small kitchens, once the chambers are stacked on top of one another, it does stand rather tall. Which, while not a problem in itself, does mean it's unlikely to fit in most standard refrigerators, so you'll have to enjoy your freshly filtered water with ice or at room temperature.

However, drinking temperature preferences aside, I was perfectly happy keeping this out on my kitchen worktops, even while hosting. Unlike other bulky filtering devices, this design feels elevated and sleek, looking more like a piece of chrome decor than a kitchen appliance.

Beyond looks, there is another crucial aspect to this design that I've yet to mention: the taste. Now, I should mention, I've never been particularly sensitive to the varying flavor profiles of different waters. I'm not someone who can distinguish between tap and bottled water, and I have never had a real preference between the two, either. So I'm surprised to say that I actually did notice a difference in taste when using this system. Although it's not dramatic, in a side-by-side taste test of regular tap water and water filtered using the British Berkefeld Gravity System, I found that the filtered water had a cleaner, fresher taste and was generally more pleasant to drink.

It's also worth noting that while the larger systems come with a gravity tap, allowing you to fill up your cup with ease, this is seemingly not an option with the 1L model. It's by no means difficult to remove the upper chamber and pour the filtered water directly from the lower one, but I did find myself wishing I had the option to fill up my cup without disassembling the design every time.

It does mean you risk losing some water if you choose to pour some water while the filtration system is still in process. There's also no spout or divet for the water to flow smoothly from, so there's a higher chance of spillage than you'd find with a regular filter jug.

The general cleaning process is impressively simple, though, and perfect for those of us who need a low-maintenance kitchen. The manual instructs that "periodically, you need to clean the housing," guiding you to handwash the chambers with hot, soapy water. The ceramic filter, too, is surprisingly easy to clean, requiring nothing more than a gentle brush under running water.

Is It Worth It?

I do think that, depending on your circumstances, this could be a very worthwhile purchase.

Firstly, and perhaps most notably, if you live in an area with particularly questionable water quality, or you simply don't enjoy the taste of your tap water, this could be a real game-changer.

Another selling point of this product is its portable design. The stainless steel is surprisingly lightweight, and it's super easy to assemble, take apart, and store, which could make it an appealing choice for frequent campers.

A major factor in your decision will be a preference for cold drinks. I know that I'm more likely to consume more water if it is kept at a refreshing, chilled temperature, so the fact that this doesn't fit in my fridge is a notable downside for me. Being able to track how far along the process is would be a helpful addition, too.

At £119, this isn't necessarily a budget option, and there are products that offer similar results at lower price points. Unlike other filters on the market, this one looks remarkably sleek and would be a great fit for a minimalist kitchen. As it only stores 1L of water, this would also be a great choice for single-occupant households.

Truth be told, the microwave has never exactly felt like the most exciting of kitchen appliances. The result is a microwave that brings together simplicity, intelligence and performance in a way that feels distinctly modern." The only downside, for now, is that it's only available in the US. However, we've scoured the web for the best alternatives, so those of us in the UK can experience that same microwaveable magic.

The Panasonic design is centered around Japanese minimalism, bringing in a relaxed simplicity to what is often the most chaotic room in the home. But if one appliance isn't enough to provide that zen look, then our edit of Japanese kitchen decor is sure to do the trick.

Designing a kitchen is never easy, and the less space you have to work with, the more difficult it can become. You see, the smaller the space, the more crucial each decision becomes, and nowhere is that more true than with your tiling. This is what will bring color, personality, and life into your kitchen, and, if you choose well, it can even help make your space seem bigger. The only question is: what size tiles are best for a small kitchen?

For anyone familiar with the struggle of designing a small kitchen, this is likely a question you've already spent some time pondering. And, chances are, you've heard arguments for both sides. To some, a smaller tile for a smaller space seems like a logical choice. However, others will argue against this design decision, warning of the countless grout lines and cluttered look that can come with these smaller format tiles. Instead, they'll encourage the use of larger tiles. It can quickly begin to feel like a minefield, and without any proper guidance, it's easy to lose yourself in the debate.

Which is exactly why I went straight to the experts to settle it once and for all. Despite what the internet would have you believe, design is personal, and what works for you may not be the same as what works for others. So, the experts haven't just given their personal preference for the size of kitchen tiles to use in a compact space; they've also shared exactly what effect you'd get from a small tile, as well as what you would achieve with a larger one, so you can weigh the options up for yourself.

The Effect of Large Tiles in Small Kitchens

Much of the discussion surrounding large vs small tiles in small spaces will come back to one thing: grout lines. Choosing the right tiles is all about coming to grips with grout, and with larger tiles, you'll have the benefit of fewer of these visual disturbances.

As Damla Turgut, whose tile brand, Otto Tiles, is favored by many designers and architects alike, explains, "Large format tiles can help bring a sense of calm to a small kitchen because there are fewer grout lines breaking up the surface." In small spaces, frequent grout lines can quickly overwhelm the space, becoming the standout feature above the tiles themselves, which is exactly why, for so many experts, larger format tiles are the more desirable option.

"In most kitchens, there's already a lot going on," adds Damla. "You've got kitchen cabinetry, lighting, built-in appliances, small appliances on the worktop and all the everyday items that come with actually using the space." With all this pre-existing, unavoidable visual stimulation, a calmer effect will usually benefit the space more.

Larger tiles allow for a more continuous, unbroken expanse of material, introducing a more relaxing atmosphere — and in small kitchens, where the space can so quickly feel cramped and cluttered, this will be all the more important. As Ca'Pietra's resident tile expert, Grazzie Wilson says, "They make a surface feel broader and less broken up, so they are especially useful in a narrow galley kitchen or a kitchen where there is already plenty going on."

However, this is not to say there's no room for error with a larger format tile. Rob Whitaker, from Claybrook Studio, says that while larger tiles can often give a cleaner finish, "If grout lines land awkwardly, you might be better with a smaller tile that will give a more structured and complete pattern which won’t jump out."

The trick lies in the understanding that in small kitchens, bigger isn't always better, with Damla saying, "If the tile is too oversized for the room, it can work against you." Explaining this further, Lesley Taylor, who founded Baked Tiles after working as an interior designer, says, "In a narrow room, an oversized tile may leave you with thin slivers along both sides or a series of obvious cuts around an island."

The Effect of Small Tiles in Small Kitchens

In busy households, where people are constantly running into the kitchen to grab a snack or fill up their glass, you'll benefit hugely from keeping the fridge in a spot closer to the entrance, allowing the kitchen to continue to function normally without the constant shuffle of human traffic.

Similarly, Neha says, "Do not position the fridge opposite the sink to avoid traffic conflicts; or in a deep alcove without ventilation, don't ignore door swing, and center-wall placement."

It's also important to note that this layout may not be equally suited to all kitchens. For example, in galley kitchens, where space is particularly narrow, your fridge is best placed "against the wall end as opposed to positioning it between walls. Wallpaper in a kitchen used to sound faintly reckless, like white carpet or silk curtains in a nursery. And by reckless, we mean bonkers. But with smart placement, decent ventilation and a little strategic glass, paper-based wall coverings can prove a perfectly reasonable option for the heart of the home.

Wallpaper also gives modern kitchen ideas something sleek cabinetry alone can’t always deliver — color, shape, and joyfulness. A few rolls can bring joinery to life, turn an awkward wall into the best seat in the house, or persuade a cavernous extension to relax and chill.

The newest kitchen schemes aren’t treating wallpaper as a decorative afterthought, either. They’re pulling cabinet colors from it, using its direction to flatter the architecture and even drawing attention overhead. Ready to get papering? 1. Change Direction

Scale matters when the pattern is going around corners and up into the roof. Think about steam as well as obvious splashes: a powerful extractor and decent ventilation matter in a room where paper, heat, and moisture coexist. “If you'd like to incorporate wallpaper behind a sink or hob, protecting it with a sheet of toughened low-iron glass allows you to enjoy the pattern without worrying about everyday splashes and stains,” Sofia adds. Low-iron glass is the key detail here; its extra clarity avoids the faint green cast of regular glass, which can impact the colors beneath.

3. Find Common Ground

In a kitchen containing purple-stained cabinetry, rippling stone, metallic fish-scale tiles, carved cornicing, and botanical lighting, wallpaper could easily become one flourish too many. The repeat also supplies a steadier rhythm behind the sculptural pieces. It creates a patterned horizon around the room, allowing the glossy island, hand-forged pendants, and decorative hood to remain singular moments within one composition.

That’s the maximalist lesson worth stealing: kitchen wallpaper doesn’t always have to be the loudest element. Choose a design that contains the room’s main color families, and it can act as connective tissue, making a collection of fiercely personal choices feel intentional rather than accidental.

4. Look Up

The ceiling is often the only uninterrupted plane left in a cabinet-heavy kitchen, making it prime territory for pattern (or wallpaper). Notice that the surfaces rhyme rather than match: the paper has a looser, airier motif, while the stone brings density and depth. Warm timber frames and smoky blue doors sit between them as a visual pause, preventing the room from becoming one continuous gray swirl.

5. Follow the Thread

When the kitchen wallpaper has this much personality, the cabinetry needs to join in the fun. House of Hackney’s Artemis in Blush sets a warm, uplifting backdrop, while olive fronts provide a comparatively solid base. Clean-lined cabinetry stops the florals tipping into country-kitchen territory, giving the scheme a sharper, more contemporary edge.

“Once the client had chosen the House of Hackney wallpaper, we looked for ways to weave it into the kitchen rather than letting it sit separately," recalls Leila Touwen, co-founder of Pluck. "Echoing the coral on the handles and plinths creates a thread of color that quietly unifies the whole scheme.”

The trick is knowing when to stop. Olive cabinetry anchors the room, allowing the yellow steelwork and blue roof beams to join the mix without tipping it into chaos. It’s an eclectic palette, but the clean, clearly defined blocks of color keep it feeling deliberate.

6. Frame the View

In a galley kitchen, the far wall already acts as a natural focal point, so concentrating pattern there exaggerates the room’s length and gives the eye a rewarding destination. Here, House of Hackney’s Hollyhocks in Spring makes the most of that visual pull, its dense, meadow-like repeat creating a deliberate burst of abundance beyond the pale pink cabinets.

“A window can be a handy moment to break up a run of a busy wallpaper," says Leila. "The view, the change in perspective, gives the eye somewhere to rest, while the pattern around it almost frames the garden like a living artwork. It feels colorful, but never overwhelming.”

Keeping the side walls practical and relatively plain also prevents the smaller space from feeling overstuffed. The black-and-white floor supplies enough graphic contrast to carry the wallpaper’s impact back through the room, so one wall does the decorative work of four.

7. Mine the Print for Colors

Wallpaper can hand you a two-tone cabinet scheme without the usual hours spent sweating over paint charts. Here, Cole & Son’s Satara wraps the room in dark foliage, ochre leaves, and prowling big cats, giving the classic architecture a deliciously exotic edge. Rather than compete with it, the furniture uses two blues to separate the cooking and storage run from the brighter prep and seating island.

“The easiest way to make kitchen wallpaper feel intentional is to borrow from it," says Richard Moore, creative director at Martin Moore. "You don’t need to match the dominant color — often it’s the supporting shades that create the most interesting scheme. Here, the cabinetry picks up two of the blues hidden within the print, giving the whole room a natural sense of cohesion.”

The darker shade advances into the foreground while the paler blue recedes against the walls, making the zoning legible without resorting to an obvious light-versus-dark split. Brass hardware picks up the wallpaper’s warmer notes and stops the blues feeling chilly.

8. Go Off-Grid

Where repeating patterns bring rhythm, murals paint a picture. Here, Designers Guild’s Arjuna Leaf Viridian rises from dense leaves into a near-black canopy, creating the illusion of depth behind an otherwise streamlined kitchen. Because the artwork has a clear horizon and vertical movement, the wall reads less like decoration and more like an opening onto a gorgeous landscape.

The simple oak cabinetry and monolithic island wisely stay out of its way. Pale flooring and a white ceiling provide breathing room, while the island’s dark face borrows just enough from the mural’s shadowy ground to anchor the two halves of the space.

“Nothing transforms a kitchen quite like a floor-to-ceiling mural," says Charlotte Wright of Hobson’s Choice, Bath. "More immersive than a repeating wallpaper, it turns an ordinary wall into a piece of art that completely changes the atmosphere of the room."

"For the best result, have the design scaled to your exact wall dimensions, taking cabinetry and architectural details into account before it’s printed,” she adds.

The best wallpaper trends aren’t trying to turn kitchens into living rooms or bedrooms; they’re enhancing what makes these spaces interesting in the first place, be it strong architecture, expansive walls and beautifully crafted joinery.

And as for outdated wallpaper trends, the only truly stale move is treating pattern as something that must stay safely beyond the kitchen door.
