Accent chairs are a tricky piece to get right. Sitting somewhere between an armchair and a dining chair, they tend to err on the decorative side rather than the functional — though practicality is never amiss when extra seating is involved. But despite the many accent chairs I see every day, I keep finding myself coming back to IKEA's STOCKHOLM 2025 Armchair. And while called an 'armchair', I would consider this to fall more into the 'accent chair' category than the 'armchair' category — though I'd say this style bridges the gap with comfort.

Having long been a fan of IKEA's STOCKHOLM collections — the long-running premium range that allows its designers to push boundaries with a slightly higher budget — the 2025 collection was one of my favorites, if not my favorite, and this accent chair is a perfect example of its focus on materiality and intentional design. Interiors editor Emma Breislin, who went to Sweden to see the collection last year, explains, "This bouclé accent chair doesn't look like something you'd find at the flat-pack giant, but, believe it or not, its plush curves have been carefully designed to neatly fit in one box.

"Plus, that backrest is like a comforting hug. It sits relatively low to the ground, which feels particularly cool, and makes it feel "more casual," the designer, Ola Wihlborg, told me." Emma confirmed that the chair was really padded and comfortable and that it would be great in the corner of your bedroom for putting shoes on due to its low profile. Not just your bedroom, though; it would work in a living room, hallway, or anywhere you want to add a decorative focal point with the added benefit of an extra seat. Plus, the minimalist design of this chair means it will work in any interior scheme, and its compact size makes it perfect for smaller apartments, too.

As sunset creeps earlier with every autumn evening, movie nights are firmly back on the agenda — and so are the squabbles over the best seat on the sofa. Before you try to deny it, I know it’s true: it’s always the one with the footrest. That’s why I’m rather taken with IKEA’s spacious modular UPPÅKRA sofa, which, when pushed together, creates a design-y 70s-style conversation pit where everyone gets the best spot.

Though it’s one of the newer IKEA sofas, the versatility of UPPÅKRA means it is quickly shaping up to be one of the big-box brand’s most compelling, thanks to its sink-in cushioning and boundless adaptability. The modules can be arranged as a two-seater, three-seater, L-shape, U-shape, or even a complete square, meaning you can adapt the sofa to your room rather than the other way around.

Now, this isn’t a conversation pit in the traditional sunken sense — a hallmark of mid-century modern interiors. But that might be for the best: there’s no need to start digging into your living room’s foundations to achieve a cozy, sociable impact.

Conversation pits rose to prominence in the 70s, mostly in the US, championed by maverick architect Eero Saarinen and designer Alexander Girard. They’re enjoying something of a revival now, albeit in less architecturally demanding ways. Part of the appeal is obvious: they’re deeply comfortable and carry all the retro appeal of mid-century interiors. But the face-to-face layout of these sunken spaces also encourages a more social way of sitting, which feels particularly appealing in an age of digital fatigue and the growing appetite for a more analog way of life.

The three-seat UPPÅKRA offers a subtle nod to that shape, but its modularity lets you take the idea much further. Expand it into an L- or U-shape for a more enveloping arrangement, then use the UPPÅKRA footstool to fill the gaps and create one sprawling surface for all-out reclining. Or leave the middle open, preserving that distinctive face-to-face layout. Either way, the best seat in the house might finally be everyone’s.

While these modular pit sofas prioritize reclining, the true purpose of a conversation pit was always connection. While these U-shaped options are still oriented towards a television at one end, traditional closed pits (popular pre-smartphones) are more analog, leaving screens on the outside of their sunken boundaries.

If you are not quite ready to dispose of your telly, delve even deeper into the archives and consider a separate conversation room: a space dedicated to gathering, chatting and connecting, emerging out of 18th century Paris as a salon.

IKEA just released its annual Store & Organize Report — and, frankly, I feel seen. One of its key findings is that a whopping one in ten of us use our ovens as storage (one in four if you're in South Korea). I hope you, like me, are only storing baking trays in there, because anything else sounds like a fairly serious fire hazard.

The report also found that one in ten of us have cancelled having guests over because we’re ashamed of our untamed clutter (tick), while 68% of households have a so-called “drawer of doom” (tick, tick). The kitchen counter is the biggest clutter hotspot in the home, and the place most likely to cause arguments, too. It’s ironic, really, since IKEA’s organizers are some of the best and most inventive around, solving organization problems you didn’t even realize you had across practically every room in the house. Clearly, it’s time I started taking my own advice.

So, I’ve scoured IKEA’s kitchen storage solutions and gathered the cleverest and most stylish below. And no, I won’t be providing any further comment on my oven at this time.

Though there are some fairly exposing statistics in IKEA’s Store & Organize Report, there’s a more reassuring message underneath them: our homes are moving away from the picture-perfect ideal of immaculate organization towards something more human, personal, and liveable.

It’s an approach to organization that puts the people living in a home first, rather than forcing everyday life to fit around an aesthetic, and it’s one of the home organization trends Livingetc forecasted at the beginning of the year. There is plenty of evidence that surrounding yourself with art can benefit everything from your mood to your cognitive function. Yet when it comes to decorating our homes, furniture understandably tends to take priority, while art is often considered a luxury; a nice to have. That's what makes IKEA’s new KONSTRUNDA collection so interesting: it puts art front and center, without the gallery-worthy price tag.

For all its devotees, the big-box Scandinavian brand can sometimes be discounted as just a place to go for the basic building blocks of a home. But every now and then, IKEA products go beyond that, from the playful PS Collection to increasingly customizable wardrobes that can look surprisingly designer-made. And now, an accessible art collection with KONSTRUNDA.

Bringing together seven creators from different disciplines, backgrounds, and generations, IKEA's new collection comprises 22 distinctive pieces that reinterpret what art can look like in the home. There’s handblown glass objet, sculpture, wall-hangings, as well as more practical pieces, like a chunky chrome coffee table and sculptural stool. As for the inspiration, "Art should be available for all to enjoy, not a luxury reserved for galleries," says Karin Gustavsson, IKEA's creative Leader for KONSTRUNDA.

Translating to 'art tour,' KONSTRUNDA is quite literally a journey through different influences and aesthetics, with each creator bringing their own interpretation of art for the home. Some have worked with IKEA before, including in-house designer Akanksha Deo, who found the brief to create art objects rather than purely functional furniture particularly liberating. (She created two decorative objects and a tactile tapestry in a vibrant blue.)

Swedish glass, ceramics, and metal worker Lisa Reiser has also previously worked with IKEA since 2018, alongside her own collection of glass sculptures. Immediately brimming with ideas, the three glass sculptures she created for the collection were all her initial sketches. "There have just been some minimal changes to the curves to adjust for production," she tells Livingetc. "The team from IKEA and I traveled to the glass factory to try out some different colors and textures, and Karin and I decided together what colors would fit best in the collection."

Acclaimed Swedish designer Lisa Hilland reveled in the opportunity to work with IKEA again, but this time, without the typical problem-solving brief. "The challenge was to create with a lot of freedom," she notes. But she flourished. "I actually started out in fine art at Central St Martin’s College in London in the 90s, and it was wonderful to go back to my roots again," she adds.

London-based product and furniture designer Andu Masebo was also part of the team, designing a chunky chrome side table and two wooden stools-cum-side-tables that are also art objects in their own right.

Similarly, Italian designer Emanuele Stamuli, who is Stockholm-based and has worked with everyone from Ganni to Alexander Wang (though never IKEA), was brought on board. "It was an exciting opportunity, but also one I approached with a lot of curiosity,” he shares. He kept his designs simple: two vases, a stool, and a rug — all in black and white,with a tiny touch of chrome.

For Ingrid Leander, one of the youngest designers in the collection, along with her collaborator, Ignor Holtermann, KONSTRUNDA has been in the works for three years, after Karin Gustavsson approached her at an exhibition for her brand, IGGY.

"I brought in Igor to co-design with me, we’d already done a few projects together that touched on interiors," she explains. Their influences offer a striking blend of environment: caution tape and zebra crossings, along with palm trees emblazoned on a mirror to offer a moment of escape when glancing at your own reflection.

The result is a deliberately broad-ranging collection, with pieces bringing an artful note to the home. And with every item priced below £200, it makes a rather convincing case that you don’t need a gallery-sized budget to start collecting.

Quite frankly, I cannot fathom that the VINDKRAFT Table Lamp costs less than £20. Crafted from molded paper pulp, it has an artisanal feel to it that reads far more expensive than it is.

Design Lab stylist Miaad Latoof agrees, saying, "Its sculptural silhouette and softly ribbed paper pulp finish introduce an organic texture to a surface, almost like adding another piece of decorative art.

"Use it to break up harder lines and smoother finishes on a console or sideboard. Placed next to a lacquer surface or even wood, its softer, irregular texture creates the contrast that makes a styled surface feel more tactile and ultimately more elevated."

2. SANELA Dark Brown Curtains

While the SANELA curtain range has been around for a while, this dark brown colorway is a new addition and, in my opinion, is the most stylish of the collection — not to mention an ideal choice as we head towards the cozy season.

When it comes to buying curtains, you need to think of them beyond just their decorative element, and instead how they can completely transform the feel of a space. Floorlength curtains, such as this pair from IKEA, can visually elongate the height of a room, making the space feel grander, while the deep, rich brown tone adds depth and drama.

Crafted from luxurious thick velvet which helps the curtains hang elegantly, they add warmth and style to a space while also functioning to dampen sound and soften light.

3. TRANERED Coffee Table

Another dark brown number, the well-sized (90 x 90 cm) and modern TRANERED Coffee Table has an ash veneer with a wood-grain finish that adds both interest and a more natural feel, looking as stylish as it is practical.

What I love about this coffee table is the two sneaky hidden storage compartments, revealed by horizontal hatches, for storing remotes and other clutter that might otherwise ruin the vibe of your coffee table styling for a more streamlined, elegant space.

“I will never spend an embarrassing amount on an everyday vase. And why should I when cool, stacked, glossy silhouettes like PÄRLHÄGG exist?," says home wellness writer Amiya Baratan. "At the risk of jumping ahead, it feels like an easy way to reset my home for autumn.

When I check into a hotel, one of the first things I look for — alongside handy bedside plugs and high-thread-count cotton sheets — is a full-length mirror. This mirror, along with its smaller counterpart, was designed by 26-year-old Swiss industrial design graduate Constance Thiessoz, who joined the project to bring a younger perspective to the emerging KOMPISHÄNG range. She worked alongside IKEA veterans and fellow intern Lukas Albrektsson, the designer behind the KOMPISHÄNG stools, which not only save space but also turn into functional and stylish display shelves when 'stored away' — these clever stacking stools will no doubt become an IKEA classic.

As a London renter, I have invested in multiple IKEA Billy bookcases over the years, because I've never successfully moved one from flat to flat. Quick to assemble but tricky to take back down again and easily chipped, with prices starting from just £35, I've found it cheaper to sell my old shelves and buy a new one rather than pay for a pricey moving van. IKEA’s new KOMPLEMENT pull-out mirror could be the solution we’ve been waiting for, provided you already own one of the brand’s famously chameleonic PAX wardrobes. Available with a white or light gray frame, this slender mirror retrofits neatly into the wardrobe, then slides out and rotates when you need it. No contorting yourself into a corner, no shifting furniture around, just a full-length view when the outfit indecision strikes.

Taking up no additional wall space and claiming just a few inches inside the wardrobe, it could be one of IKEA’s cleverest products yet. It joins the brand’s growing arsenal of PAX add-ons, from jewellery trays to trouser rails, which can turn the famously flatpack wardrobe into something that feels considerably more bespoke, without the custom-furniture price tag.

There is some small print to negotiate before you buy, though. The pull-out mirror is compatible only with PAX frames measuring 58cm deep, and it needs a section tall enough to accommodate its 130cm height, meaning it cannot sit above drawers. It also cannot be installed in a corner section. A little wardrobe planning required, then — but still, this is a remarkably discreet way to smuggle a full-length mirror into the bedroom.

Nothing's better than a good refresh that transforms an old piece into something with personality. I've seen Bemz sofa covers around for a few years now — chic slips that fit over stock IKEA pieces and make them look custom. And they've been on my wish list ever since. It's the kind of design that makes you want to buy the IKEA sofa just so that you can dress it in a Bemz sofa cover (and warning: they are considerably more expensive than IKEA).

That's what impressed me so much about IKEA's new UGGLERUM Side Table. Not only does it solve the problem of having a living room that's too space-poor for a coffee table, but it also has a certain mid-century sensibility that made me question if it really could be from the big-box Swedish brand.

It's one of the first things you're told to think of when planning kitchen drawers, so honestly, I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to apply the same logic to bedroom storage, where space is even more of a premium.

I already own IKEA's RÅSKOG Trolley, so I can personally vouch for how handy it is around the home. I bought it as extra storage for my small university dorm bathroom (IYKYK). I liked how the wheels meant I could roll it in front of my full-length mirror when I needed, and out of the way when I didn't. Plus, I bought the Norrava Bamboo Lid to go with it, so I could hide things away and display my perfume collection on top.

Admittedly, it's not the first place I'd think to go either, but after spending an afternoon sitting on every style I could find in their showroom, I've got to admit: I'm pretty impressed.

Those who know know that as far as IKEA outdoor sofas go, the NÄMMARÖ series is a fan favorite. In fact, it's regularly completely sold out in the UK as a result. So, of course, I had to give it a try for myself.

To start, a disclaimer: I did not sit on the 2-seat NÄMMARÖ. I sat on what was essentially a sectional version, built out with the two-seaters and other NÄMMARÖ series components. Overall, though, it was basically the same product, and its modularity is one of the things people love most about this IKEA outdoor sofa.

As for my thoughts, this is quite a chic sofa. The seat is super firm (which shouldn't be too shocking; the frame is wood), and comfortably deep. The cream-colored cushions might be best suited for a covered patio, as I would imagine they get dirty quite easily, but they are also removable and washable, which is good.

But don't just take it from me. This IKEA outdoor sofa is rated 4.7/5-stars after 64 reviews, with one customer writing: "The long wait for it all to be back in stock was totally worth it. It's super comfortable and looks great in my garden. Some reviewers mention that the cushions slip. I haven't found this at all, as the seat cushions are anchored to the frame with elastic fixings. The DUVHOLMEN cushions with cream FROSON covers are very comfortable, and my dogs' muddy paw prints wipe off easily with a damp cloth. My only regret is that I didn't get one years ago!"

TEGELÖN

The TEGELÖN is not your average IKEA outdoor sofa. It's pretty minimal, as you can tell from my photo above, and comes as part of a conversation set, which is complete with two chairs and a coffee table. Despite appearances, I thought this was comfier than anticipated.

Is it the same feel as sitting on a couch with cushions? Not at all. But it's a good option for a front porch set-up, and would require a lot less care than something with true seats. I like that it's black, as well, which is yet another safeguard against stains and marks. And it's currently on sale.

Looking at reviews, one customer identified a bit of an annoying point: it's currently only available to purchase as a complete set rather than individual pieces, which could be restricting depending on the size of your garden — but that's what Facebook Marketplace is for, right?

VITTSKÄR

The VITTSKÄR is probably the most traditional of these three IKEA outdoor sofas. It has very plush cushions and a very deep sit, with a plastic/rattan frame. Due to its size, I'd say it's better for backyards and patios than a small balcony.

And while the plastic isn't quite as nice as the Acacia wood on the NÄMMARÖ, it's definitely easy to care for and quite durable. You should have no problems with this sitting on an uncovered patio (white cushions aside).

Also, I liked that the chaise is movable, so you can turn whichever side you like into the sectional or even treat the ottoman as a 'coffee' table. Alternatively, there is a matching coffee table, too.

While it currently only has one review online, it's remarkably positive. "This IKEA outdoor sofa has ample space for extra cushions along the back and is very comfortable to lie out on," it reads. "I love that I can replace any cushions or parts in the future if need be, as it is totally modular and you can even just buy a new cushion insert. The fabric is smooth and very easy to clean."

The review does note one drawback, though. "The seat cushion toggles have nothing to attach to, so I just linked them to each other at the back of the cushions. I ended up buying another backrest and back cushion for the ottoman part, as otherwise the end cushion would just slide around, and the zipper is visible on three sides."

While it won't provide as much privacy if you want to screen out neighbors, for example, this plant stand is perfect for smaller gardens that could benefit from subtle zoning or hiding smaller details (like my bike) from sight.

I could even see it refashioned as a bar cart, with bottles filling the top.

Buying a sofa is — in a word — hard. And expensive. And frustrating, and painful, and exhausting, too. I guess maybe you can't distill the sofa-buying process down to just one word, because it really is just too big a deal. Because if you want a couch that's really going to last, you can't take any shortcuts.

If there were a shortcut, though, I am confident it would have something to do with IKEA's sofas. Because of its reputation and its furniture acumen, you can generally shop with the understanding that you'll find something of decent quality. But there is also so much product to sort through, and in this case, that might mean finding the best sofa for you feels like finding a needle in a haystack.

Well, dear reader, that's where I can help. A few weeks ago, I spent an afternoon at my local store, where I did nothing but sit on every single IKEA sofa available in the showroom (okay fine, I ate some meatballs, too). I sat up, sat down, rolled around, touched, felt, plopped, plumped ... I did everything you would need to do to get a decent feel for a sofa before purchasing, then compiled my testing in the shortlist below.

Now, you can shop a pre-selected shortlist of sofas that not only impressed me during my visit but also come with a first-person review you can trust. Below, you'll find my five fave IKEA sofas (though take a look at my separate guide to IKEA sleeper sofas if you're looking for a sofa bed) as well as some honorable mentions, which are good choices, stylistically, but may come with more caveats than their predecessors.

JÄTTEBO

This was, by far, my favorite IKEA sofa. From my experience, I would certainly recommend it. It is so incredibly chic — the low profile, the corduroy fabric, the green color — and very on trend. Plus, IKEA's JÄTTEBO sofa also conceals hidden storage beneath (yes, you read that right).

I quite like that it is modular, as well, which means you can reconfigure the layout as your life changes, grows and expands. The sit itself is medium — it was softer than I thought but not uber-plush, either.

I also touched and felt a few of the different upholsteries available and can confidently say they are all chic and of high quality. The soft brown was definitely my favorite (included in the gallery above), but the white and blue bouclés were also nice for something a bit more tactile.

STOCKHOLM 2025

As for my second favorite IKEA sofa, I would have to say the STOCKHOLM 3-seater took the cake. The look and style of this piece is a 10/10, and it's not something that seems like it came from IKEA; the visible wooden frame, for instance, elevates it instantly.

It's also much bigger than you'd expect, in part because of the deep seat and pocket-spring core, and the sit is extremely plush — probably an eight out of 10, with 10 being the most plush possible. (So if you have back problems, maybe not the one for you.)

The cotton-linen blend fabric feels pretty durable and would be nice to curl up on, but I do wish that the fill felt a touch more substantive or high-quality. It's also worth noting that the cover is washable and comes with a 25-year guarantee.

UPPÅKRA

If you're looking to buy a main living room sofa for a family, the UPPÅKRA is probably the one for you. It's a very big couch, with an extremely deep seat depth and a chaise that could fit two adults or three to four kids.

Now, at least in my showroom, the cushions on the display UPPÅKRA seemed a tad too big for the frame, but I'm not sure if that was just wear and tear on the showroom model or a hallmark of the product. Still, though, the sit is really nice, and the overall product makes for a quality family couch, not least of all because the style is top-notch.

It comes in six different colored, washable fabrics, and you can also choose between wood or chrome-plated legs, depending on the look you're going for. As someone who cares a lot about style, I appreciate the options.

KIVIK

The KIVIK is a solid buy when it comes to IKEA sofas. I have linked a three-seater here, but I tried a sectional in the store. I quite liked the chaise; it was pretty wide and could easily serve as a place for a guest to sleep.

Regarding plushness, I'd give this a 7/10. It didn't feel like a luxury sofa to me, but it felt good for what it was. In other words, if you bought this couch online and sight unseen, you wouldn't be unhappy when it arrived.

The other thing I would note: the armrests are sofa height, so if you like to lean your head on your hand while you, say, read a book, you'd be leaning over pretty far. That said, one online review notes: "To someone who has back problems, I find this sofa very comfortable. It’s on the firm side (which is perfect for me) and doesn’t eat you when you sit down."

It also comes in eight different fabric colors. Plus, top tip: the matching Kivik footstool has hidden storage space.

FINNALA

The FINNALA is another solid IKEA sofa. Good for the price, nice fabric, stylish silhouette. I'd say that the sit leans plush (6/10), but not overly so, and that the seat itself is deep.

Personally, I wish this had a bench cushion instead of three individual seats — I just think that's a classier look — but it's also true that three separate cushions make for easier cleaning and replacement. So, there's a silver lining there. I'd just keep an eye on this fabric if you have pets, as I'm not sure that it would be a good sofa for animals.

I'm also sorry to UK readers, but this IKEA sofa seems to only be available in the US right now. It's also currently on clearance, so it may be on its way out. If you like the look, I'd move quickly.

Honorable Mentions

The IKEA sofas that are still worth mentioning — and could still work great for you! — but didn't crack my top five after my afternoon spent in-store.

SALTMYRAN

I don't think the look and sit of IKEA's SALTMYRAN 2-Seat/loveseat rises to the level of main sofa (you just cannot lounge the way you want on this), but it's a shocker for the price and also surprisingly comfortable. It has a medium firmness with a compact, minimalist design. Consider for an office, guest room, or dorm.

SALTSJÖBADEN

The SALTSJÖBADEN is pretty firm, but the deep seat kind of makes up for that (i.e. you don't feel like you're chilling with a railroad-straight spine). The fabric covers are washable, and would probably stand up nicely against kids and pets. In fact, the IKEA I visited had this in a nursery-themed showroom, and I quite liked that placement.

If you'd like to use the 2-seater as a main couch, I would also recommend buying the matching footstool to go with it; I tried it out and liked having that flexibility. But the SALTSJÖBADEN series also has three-seat and sectional options, too, so you're covered if you want something bigger, too.

MORABO

The MORABO would be higher on this list of IKEA sofas if it were available in both the U.S. and the U.K. — as of this writing, it is only available in the U.S. Sigh. This green colorway is fabulous, in my opinion; in store, I sat on a black leather MORABO, which, although the quality did surprise me (it has a nice deep seat and a medium-plush sit), wasn't my favorite stylistically. If you can capitalize on this natural green look, do it. Best of all, you can honestly bring this into your scheme as something of a neutral.

Anecdotally speaking, I would say that the FRIHETEN sleeper sofa is one of, if not the, best-selling sofas at IKEA. You can't seem to go on any trip or crash at any friend's house without running into one. And for good reason!

I have had many a sound night's sleep on a FRIHETEN, then gotten up and lounged on it all day. Don't get me wrong — it's not what I'd want as the main couch in my living room. But it's an affordable, versatile piece that makes hosting overnight guests a breeze. You can see the appeal!

What is the best-looking IKEA sofa? 

In my opinion, the best-looking IKEA sofa is easily the JÄTTEBO. Truthfully, it blew me away. I felt like I was looking at and sitting on something much more expensive, from a higher-end brand. The other fabric options are just as chic as the olive green I tried, too. I don't think you can go wrong with this sofa, especially because it's genuinely comfortable, too. Perhaps on the more expensive side for this retailer, but worth the money, no doubt.
