Set among the sun-drenched vines of the South of France, where the landscape shifts between the elegance of Aix and the raw beauty of the Luberon, interior designer Héléna Monnet-Plat has reimagined a modern bastide (or French country house) into something far more personal: a home filled with pieces designed mostly by herself.

Taking inspiration from the rusticity of Morocco, the pared-back palette — with the occasional pop of print — often found in Portugal and the feeling of sunlight you get in the best Spanish villas, this modern home is a culmination of her career so far.

"Boldness, passion, vision" — these are the three words Héléna Monnet-Plat uses to define the project. Original works sourced from a range of French galleries punctuate each room, but thanks to the sense of space and light with which Héléna has now imbued her home, the art pieces end up coming together to feel relaxed and layered, rather than curated.

Originally built in the 1980s, the house "had little charm", she admits, so what had to follow was a complete transformation. "We renovated and extended it, incorporating key features of a traditional Provençal bastide to give it both character and soul."

Working alongside her husband, the reshaping of the house took just 10 months to complete. "My husband and I have been renovating houses since we met 10 years ago," she says. "He takes care of the structural aspects and overall architectural vision, while I design the interior layouts, custom joinery, and decoration."

The defining feature of the home's new look is the spectacular, soaring modern living room, anchored by an eight-meter-high, arched window that floods the interiors with light. Bathed in the warmth of the French sunshine, soft rugs cover hard floors and zesty fabrics line built-in banquettes. Héléna's avowed intention was "to blend comfort with artistic works".

Héléna's approach is instinctive and with so many of the pieces here being custom-built, the overall result is hyper-personal, almost autobiographical. "I am an interior decorator before being an interior architect," she says. "I designed almost everything in this villa because I wanted it to reflect who I am — to create a strong yet timeless interior, one that looks like no other."

Not having a client to design for, it's always fascinating to see where the mind of a designer goes. "This project is a kind of culmination of all my desires," she says. "There were no limits in terms of color, material combinations, or bold choices. I followed only my instincts to create a warm, rounded cocoon."

Ultimately, the project is more than a home; it's a manifesto. "I ask my clients to forget the photos they've seen from social media," Héléna says, believing that designing from the heart — not from what you've seen already — is the only way forward. "It is only through the uniqueness of the people who live in a home that design with true soul can be created." Here, that philosophy feels not just realized, but lived.

Transforming a house into a home, renowned artist and designer Jobe Burns has taken this 300-year-old farmhouse and created a space that oozes with modern design, while keeping the bones of the home's history. An authentic take on design that captures the true essence of the home, Jobe spent four and a half years delicately completing this project and bringing it to life.

A modern interior design style doesn't mean you need to take away from the true history of a home, and for Jobe Burns, keeping that element alive while also letting its history lead the way is what allowed him to navigate the space in its most genuine form.

Speaking to Jobe in more detail about the inspiration behind the revival project, as well as the home's features, the artist shares his thoughts with me in detail. Fresh out of a degree in spatial design, the Walsall-born artist was starting to explore sculpture when the conversation about working on this farmhouse first began.

"I was hungry to take on something with depth, something that had scope that would really push me," Jobe tells me. "The farmhouse already had so many beautiful features: incredible old beams, brickwork softened by centuries of use, thresholds worn down by footfall, leaning walls, swollen floorboards. You could feel the history in every corner."

"I knew my approach to the house would be a long conversation about British identity, and for me, it became this huge opportunity to learn about British history through materials and building methods," Jobe continues.

"There was something incredibly grounding about stepping into a space that had endured for so long. That sense of stability and continuity was powerful. I wanted to honor that. Honestly, you have no idea how you’re going to do it at the start. You just take one step at a time."

And that's exactly what this artist did, from the process to bringing the design to life, Jobe made it his mission to create a space that exudes presence, preservation, and history.

The Process: Behind the Design

After many years of use, the home had become withered and worn. Naturally, many of the features, including areas of the bathroom, living room, and even kitchen, had lost their sense of je ne sais quoi, which Jobe wanted to bring back to life.

"It started with stripping everything back, literally and metaphorically," shares Jobe, speaking on how the process first began. "We took the building down to its bones: all the old plaster, electrics, plumbing, and flooring. And as we peeled back the layers, the house started revealing things."

Uncovering two hidden, brick-arched rooms that had been sealed off behind breeze blocks, Jobe says, "that moment changed everything. "From then on, the process felt less like designing and more like uncovering."

He continues, "I treated the house like a studio, working slowly, listening to it, making decisions as things revealed themselves. Every part of the house demanded care. Nothing was standard, as every wall had warped over time, and every surface had its own quirks."

To get the best out of every detail, everything was custom-made or adapted by hand, "even the finer details like the plaster-sculpted skirting or the stained glass made from salvaged fragments became exercises in patience and craft," adds Jobe.

"Because the house is so old, every day on site came with a new surprise," he explains. "Even though we had drawings, we were often making new ones in real time — sketched on a wall or sent via WhatsApp."

But along the way, there were a few challenges he had encountered. "One of the biggest challenges was flooding the ground floor with light," he tells me. "We ended up digging down four metres to restructure the entire area to open it up. I remember standing over this massive hole, watching the builders work around these 300-year-old walls, just praying the engineer’s calculations were right."

"Once the structural work was done, everything slowed. You can start obsessing over small things: the curve of a corner, the way the wall meets the floor, how the water lands in the basin. It all becomes very intimate," explains Jobe. "And throughout it all, I was constantly in conversation with the client. On a project like this, patience and dialogue are everything."

The home embraces airy textures and neutral tones, while also playing on the warmth of the home's bones and wooden elements. There is a sense of stillness, peace, and comfort which champions the home and its features.

The living room has an interior window between two rooms with an arched framing, and a period style glass in amber and green — talking back to the history of the home.

While other living rooms in the home carry rich, deep colors that make a bold and forward statement, one color-drenched in bold red, and the other, embracing its natural woods and deep, dark elements.

The modern living room furniture adds a sense of separation within the space, while also cohesively bringing things together as one.

Its beauty and delicate touches of decor certainly create quite the impact.

Letting the Building Take the Lead

Jobe's goal throughout this project was to allow the home to take the lead, and as he followed on, he discovered hidden gems that created a space that fought to tell an untold story.

"We let the building lead," shares Jobe. "The idea was that you adapt your behavior to the house, not the other way around. That’s a bit of a departure from most modern builds, where it’s all about efficiency and convenience."

He continues, "On one of the fireplaces, we used the original broken roof tiles to build the base. We avoided smart tech and kept everything manual: light switches, dimmers, even the heating. The modernity is in the way the house holds space."

"It’s a home that lets you feel things," says Jobe, and I could not agree more. Its colors, textures, and daring features create unforgettable spaces to explore and enjoy.

"There are spaces for solitude, for music, for gathering," Jobe tells me. "And the material palette is chalky, muted, earthy, which grounds everything in something that feels timeless but distinctly now."

"I think the house gives you time," says Jobe, and it's certainly a beautiful way of seizing the home.

"Time to put your phone down, take a breath, and just be," he continues. "There are so many attentive details that every time you’re in the house, you can just stare at something else."

And of course, the challenges allowed him to uncover and push the home to different lengths.

"The first seven to nine months were spent stabilizing the structure. Chimneys had shifted, brickwork had perished, old ivy had grown into the brickwork," says Jobe.

The artist highlights that there was a lot of unseen groundwork done before the renovation began, and "because the house was so old, there were some parts of the house that had no foundation, so the brickwork was just sitting on the clay-heavy land." For Jobe, the first nine months involved correcting all the unseen elements of the home before getting started.

"And then there’s the fact that nothing is square," he adds. "Every wall is wonky, every floor dips. You can’t just install a kitchen or hang a door off the shelf; everything has to be made to fit. It’s painstaking, but it’s also what gives the house its integrity. We could’ve knocked it down and rebuilt it in half the time, but where’s the fun in that?"

Maintaining the Fundamental Elements of the Home and Its History

The most important part of the project, as Jobe emphasised previously, was maintaining the home's integrity and spirit. Interior design is certainly about taking risks, but in doing so, it's about how you execute it without taking too much away from the bones and foundation of the home itself.

"We kept and restored as much of the original structure as possible," says Jobe. "The doors, beams, and floorboards were a big part to get right. When it came to extending the house, we sourced handmade 2” bricks from a farmhouse that had been demolished for HS2. They were from the same period, so the new parts speak the same language as the old."

Jobe continues and tells me, "In one section, what used to be the external wall is now inside, but we left it untouched, patina and all. For the new brickwork, we mixed eleven different shades of mortar before landing on the right one. Historic mortars had more lime, so they’re whiter than the orangey tones we use today, so getting that right really mattered.

"Even the dead trees in the garden got a second life. We milled them into shelves and tables. Nothing was treated as waste. The whole project became a quiet collaboration between the house, the land, and its past." This is sustainable interior design at its finest

Stand Out Design

I asked Jobe what his favorite room in this project came to be... "the red bathroom," he tells me.

Its rich hues certainly know how to draw attention, and as for the textures, hardware, and materials — it remains calming yet desirable in its appearance.

"I wanted this bathroom to feel like a spa," says Jobe. "It’s the primary bathroom, and it was actually originally a bedroom. I wanted you to enter the space and completely disconnect: shut the door, put some music on, and get lost in there for hours."

The large ceramic bath and the clay walls wrap around in the same hues, creating a feeling of oneness.

"I wanted soft shapes everywhere — from the edges of the bath, to the niches in the wall — to create an almost cocoon-like environment for relaxation," Jobe continues.

Drawing on the spa-bathroom feel, it's a feature in the home that lets off passion, fearlessness, and unforgettable shades of charm.

"The curved shower is also a beautiful feature that hugs you when you’re inside there, but you have this huge wooden beam overhead," he says. "The whole space feels like an environment that grounds you."

This room, and of course the rest of the home, is truly a labor of love, and it shows through its thoughtful design.

Get Inspired By the Look

An artist who took a leap of faith after graduating, Jobe created a home now full of life, allure, and unbeatable appeal.

"Once you start peeling back the layers of a 300-year-old home, you realize you’re in a relationship with the past," notes Jobe. "That's the beauty of it. You can’t treat a house like this with a quick-fix mindset."

As a final note, he tells me, "If we’d knocked it down and rebuilt it, we would’ve saved about two years, but where’s the fun in that?" And I couldn't agree more.

Great design, thoughtful design, and meaningful design take time — this project is just one example of taking a risk and succeeding.

Once the agricultural hub of the South West, over the years, the Cotswolds have become the weekend stomping grounds for London's elite. And along with their private members' clubs and fancy cars, they've also brought with them a thriving interior design scene.

Nestled in the heart of this affluent, bucolic dreamland, you'll find this lovingly restored Methodist Chapel. Dating back to 1790, years of modern intervention and quick fixes had clouded the property's beauty; it was screaming to be stripped back and restored to its former glory.

And, luckily, the team at Last Interior Design was ready to do just that. By combining modern sensibilities with traditional, original architecture, they were left with a nuanced and beautiful home that perfectly captures the modern-day Cotswold aesthetic.

Before

Renovating an 18th-century chapel is a major undertaking, a project many interior designers and architects alike would dream of. With the expansive rooms and colossal ceiling heights, it's like a playground for design buffs to let their imagination run wild.

But the structure had drifted far away from its former glory. Like many of the UK's historical buildings, time has not necessarily been kind to this property.

"The building had lost much of its original identity over the years, hidden beneath layers of paneling and modern interventions. It was only once we began stripping it back that its raw beauty and integrity began to reveal themselves," explains Rachele Bowley, Interior Designer and Founder of Last Interior Design.

It's rare for these types of properties to have a significant amount of money available for renovations, so you'll often see sporadic modern fixes scattered throughout instead of the more expensive maintenance options that would blend with the existing period features. So, removing these anachronistic features was the first step in reforming this property.

"From there, we preserved historical features while ensuring the space could function beautifully for 21st-century living," says Rachele.

Once stripped back to the core skeleton, the striking beauty of the historic architecture was fully appreciated. When you're working with a structure so rich in integrity and beauty, everything else flows naturally from it.

"The building itself was our greatest inspiration," Rachele comments. "Its original features informed nearly every design decision."

After

"Transforming a former place of worship into a private residence is a huge privilege - and a delicate balancing act," says Rachele.

This idea of balance forms the core guiding principle of this project. While this home had to meet the desired intention of existing as a modern, liveable home, it was equally important to pay respect to the original features that made this property so special to begin with. The challenge was in finding a design that honored both of these ideas, a common thread in many design projects where period properties are turned modern.

"We wanted to retain the building’s sense of stillness and reverence, while making it warm, functional, and personal," says Rachele. "The goal was a calm, restorative home, one that acknowledges its past, yet feels very much of its time."

The very function of this property, as a place of worship, naturally lends itself to a relaxing and meditative atmosphere, and while this renovation has altered that function, the core feeling remains the same.

The calming, thoughtful emotions this property evokes are only enhanced by the interior design concept, where light, neutral tones, and natural materials take centre stage.

"We kept the base palette neutral, layering natural textures like stone and smoked oak for timeless warmth," explains Rachele. "Furniture was a mix of antique and modern, again echoing the dialogue between eras."

As you enter the property, you're immediately greeted by the dramatic, sweeping staircase, with the balustrade-lined mezzanine standing proud above your head.

This singular feature captures the entire essence of the property. Subtle combinations of timeless contemporary features and classical architectural styles result in a nuanced, balanced design that seamlessly blends in with the original features, while still looking unmistakably modern. However, although this staircase may look as if it were part of the original structure, this was just one of the major reconstructive changes made during this renovation.

"One of the more significant changes involved reconfiguring two planned staircases," explains Rachele. "This allowed us to create a larger, more practical boot room and utility space, as well as a better flow in the layout of Bedroom 2 and its ensuite," she says.

"Our approach was to introduce contemporary elements that would quietly contrast and therefore elevate the original features, rather than imitate them," explains Rachele.

As well as modern architectural details, this goal was also realized through the integration of contemporary furniture pieces. However, for this to still look natural, there is a fine line to tread. Ultra-modern, space-age style interiors would look incongruous and entirely out of place against the backdrop of 18th-century architecture. Knowing this, the design team opted for modern interpretations of classical designs, such as this minimalist four-poster bed.

While the basic concept of this style of bed harks back to the 16th century, this stripped-back, simplified version brings a streamlined modernism to the design, making it a perfect accompaniment to this bedroom.

This style of property is typically given the full modern farmhouse treatment, which, while beautiful, can end up feeling slightly expected and uninspired. Not one for following convention, Last Interior Design opted for a sleeker Scandi-style space instead, which looks surprisingly natural against this Georgian backdrop.

"In the kitchen and boot room, we used flat slab cabinetry for a sleek, modern look, offset with bronze handles that nod subtly to classic design," notes Rachele.

These minimalist-style kitchen cabinets allowed the existing architectural features to rise to the spotlight, as opposed to competing for attention.

The central nave, with its large vaulted ceiling and seemingly endless amount of space, may have initially presented as an intimidating design challenge, but clearly, it was a challenge the team was more than capable of taking on.

By adding an additional mezzanine level, the room became more approachable, making for a perfect setting for a luxurious living area.

"The central vaulted living room, with its soaring ceiling and new mezzanine above, became a natural focal point," explains Rachele. "We preserved its sense of grandeur with the original trusses while ensuring it felt connected to the rest of the home."

The intricate and ornate glasswork of the ogival arched windows serves as built-in artwork, eliminating the need to adorn the walls with additional paintings. Taking a less-is-more approach that values simplicity over extravagance allows the attention to be placed on the beauty of the structure, and every design element refers back to the building itself.

As Rachele explains, "The color palette was pulled directly from the stained-glass windows; those inky blues, russets and smoky ambers found their way into textiles and furnishings," she continues, saying, "Even the rustic front door influenced the shape and texture of the coffee table. Our aim was always to listen to the building and allow it to guide us."

"Converting a heritage building inevitably brings a unique set of constraints, but with a brilliant, collaborative team, including Palmer + Partners and Barr Build, we approached each challenge as an opportunity for thoughtful, design-led problem solving," comments Rachele.

While no renovation project is easy, historical properties such as this one carry a whole plethora of potential problems to run into.

"The most significant challenges centred around compliance with modern fire safety regulations," says Rachele. "The architecture firm, Palmer & Partners, laid the groundwork with an intelligent initial remodel that met building control requirements, but the process still demanded a great deal of creative problem-solving."

Despite the initial stress of complications, they can often result in the most eye-catching and beautiful solutions, a testament to the creativity and commitment of the interior designers, architects, and contractors.

"With no option to extend beyond the original chapel footprint, we had to be particularly strategic in our spatial planning," says Rachele. "The client wanted an open-plan layout with a double-height volume, along with three generous bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, and a separate utility room. It was a tight brief, but we focused on intelligent zoning to make every square metre work hard."

She continues, saying, "Barr Build, the contractors, were instrumental in working alongside the M&E team to find efficient ways to route services throughout the building. In a structure with little room for manoeuvre, even the placement of risers became a strategic design decision."

When creating a design that blends elements of the traditional and the contemporary, the materials you use will do a lot of the heavy lifting.

"We focused on natural materials such as stone flooring and smoked oak engineered boards, which will age with character and have a timeless approach," says Rachele.

Anything too shiny, or obviously 'new' looking, would immediately detract from the overall aesthetic, making it feel more like a set design than a home. Naturally textured materials such as stone and wood hold a beautiful sense of history, even when just installed.

"Lime plaster was specified for the walls to allow the walls to breathe, and we kept to breathable paint in one shade across all walls and ceilings," Rachele continues. "This allowed the features such as the windows and arches, to be the highlights."

When color was used, it was always referencing the original architecture, like the blues of the sofa and kitchen, which were inspired by the stained glass windows.

It’s always fascinating to see how an interior designer decorates their own home. With no client and no brief to curtail them, you can observe their true tastes, and where they go when their creativity is given no bounds.

Take this family home in Hudson Valley, set on a 12.5-acre plot in beautiful rolling hills, two hours upstate of New York City. It bears all the hallmarks of Studio DB founders Britt and Damian Zunino: the upscale modernity and the urban glamour they’re known for. However, being the modern home they built from scratch for them and their four kids to unwind in at weekends, it feels like their aesthetic, but with its shoulders dropped.

A decorative exhale, ready to take in that next lungful of clean, country air.

"I view it as more neutral than our city projects — a lot less dramatic and an opportunity to relax our eyes, to work with textiles and color," says Britt. "We wanted something that was very open to nature, a counterpoint to our chaotic and fast-paced city life. It had to be somewhere we could come together, and it had to be easy to maintain."

The house itself, inspired by a hayloft, "but deconstructed," Damian says, "with large cut-outs that from certain angles you can see right through", was the result of months of talking and then finally a night of Damian sketching out his idea for the shape of a building. Hard-lined, with concrete floors chosen "because we keep the doors open all summer and animals come in and out constantly," says Britt, the design was chosen specifically for good times to be had within and around it, whether that’s with the kids, or the constant stream of city friends who show up for weekends of cocktails and chatter.

"There are moments about this house that are still soft, and the greenery outside overshadows all the straight lines of the architecture," Damian says. "I like the disruption of a really modern structure filled with things that look handmade — that’s what’s interesting to us, and what translates to a lot of our work," adds Britt. "We always make sure there is something weird in every scheme, that bends your imagination, and asks you to take a pause."

For this house, that could be the collection of African-inspired textiles used as a multi-layered and ever-evolving tablecloth in the dining area; the powder-coated blue beams that line the entryway, or perhaps the painterly tiles that clad the cooker hood in the kitchen. "This home is filled with things we’ve collected over the years and a lot of pieces given to us by friends," says Britt. "As a creative project it’s one that we knew we could experiment with," Damian adds. "It’s a layered and personal space that feels like home."

Although their main home is in the small town of Rumson, New Jersey, Colleen and John Cook had always wanted a place where they could feel and live among the energy and buzz of New York City.

It was especially Colleen’s dream; as the executive director of a non-profit theater company, she is immersed in her passion for the arts and culture every single day. When they found this property in the Lenox Hill neighborhood on the Upper East Side, one of her friends – Broadway actress Betsy Wolfe – recommended the couple hire the Crystal Sinclair Designs team to help them in reimagining and decorating the apartment. They couldn’t have made a better choice.

The 230 square meter apartment is sited in an Upper East Side building dating from 1938 designed by the renowned Italian-American architect, Rosario Candela.

The iconic Broadway theater and former nightclub Studio 54, where many a 1970s luminary — including Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones and Bianca Jagger — spent legendary nights during the heyday of disco, provided the inspiration behind this envelope-pushing project.

The eye-catching marble checkered fireplace hood in the modern living room was the starting point, giving Crystal’s team good direction for the rest of the design. Although this strikingly graphic focal point is not the only star of this room, as it’s also adorned with a huge working disco ball. "When it’s on, the room just glitters – it’s pretty amazing. We always wonder what the people in Central Park think when the disco ball is in action in the evenings," laughs Crystal.

"Colleen wanted something fun and vibrant," remembers Crystal, who is renowned for using imaginative solutions to craft the sorts of one-of-a-kind homes with just the right sense of drama that Colleen was looking for.

With this project, saying the designer delivered is something of an understatement — Crystal has brought the space to life with bold color and statement furniture. "We went with energetic colors, toned down slightly so they aren’t jarring," she says. "That said, we painted all the spaces that had good natural light white to keep things bright and, to turn up the volume, we opted for contrasting colors in each room."

Both new and old pieces were sourced to find the right balance in the pied-à-terre; so, for example, decorative moulding details were used to provide a more classic backdrop to the fun furnishings and abstract artworks.

The design team also homed in on a mix of luxe-y textiles such as mohair, velvet, leather, and linen, all of which bring warmth to the more glitzy material choices like the Arabescato, Lilac, and Nero Marquina marbles, as well as the mixed metal chrome and brass finishes. "We played with a lot of textures to create this vibe," observes Crystal.

The last piece of the puzzle was the dining room. With its curved wall, it proved to be quite a challenge, but was worth the effort. "It was the last area to come together and now it’s probably my favorite space," says Crystal. The sociable homeowners would agree — it’s certainly a funky spot in which to host their friends over for supper.

As far as blank canvases go, some are starker than others. Such was the case in the heart of Brooklyn, where a modern townhouse was transformed from a giant cube into a welcoming home with gentle curves.

“When we first visited, the space was an open, industrial, modern box, with a Paul Rudolph kind of vibe,” says Poonam Khanna, founder of New York’s Unionworks. Luckily, the severe structure was first reimagined by Lower Manhattan's Paik Architecture into a three-bedroom partial duplex with gentle architectural curves, softening its original rectilinear design to make it more livable.

When the client (a couple with two children) approached Unionworks for the interiors, the wish list was brief: a modern home that felt warm and embracing, that flowed effortlessly from room to room. For Poonam's part, the work revolved around tackling the home’s soaring proportions, ensuring that flow and functionality all worked seamlessly for modern life.

The design, in the end, was all about scale, influencing how the family might feel in each section of the home as they moved between areas. “There are moments of compression and then expansion that alter your sense of being in the space,” says Poonam. “It was important to us to balance that experience so it didn’t feel so jarring.”

That ease and flow is perhaps most crucial in the main living area, the most challenging space for Unionworks to navigate. With double height ceilings, the space had plenty of verticality but was horizontally constrained, surrounded by the kitchen, dining area, and designated spaces for miscellaneous tasks like homework.

“It’s a lot of ingredients to combine in close quarters,” says Poonam Khanna, intent to make the open concept layout feel cozy. “We limited the furnishings down to the essentials and allowed for space all around them so you don’t feel like things are on top of one another.”

And while Paik Architecture brought rounded architectural details into the big picture, Unionworks amplified them with complementary furniture and décor — everything from wooden surfaces with rounded edges to cylindrical lighting helped bring a softer vision into focus.

Right in the middle of it all is, perhaps, is the home's most striking moment, a dining area enveloped by stained wall paneling. "This was the most important finish decision for the project," says Poonam. "It took several rounds with Paik Architecture, their stain specialist and our clients to find just the right tones for this double height volume that dominates the space."

It was all about balance in the interior design, according to Poonam — warm but not too yellow, rich but not too red, deep but not too brown. Illuminated by lengthy, customized Lariat pendants by Apparatus Studio (leaning into the room's height), the panels are richly stained without losing the wood’s natural grains. The result grounds the space with warmth — an artisanal, human touch.

Flowing into the modern kitchen, warmth continues with a light oak Henrybuilt kitchen. But the star of the show, without question, is a bold, unexpected jolt of color. "I was in LA sourcing for another project when I saw these chartreuse green veined slabs and knew exactly where they belonged,” says Poonam of the unique marble kitchen countertops. “Fortunately, our clients were on the same page and made a gutsy choice to approve our proposal.”

The vivid green nods to the yard running alongside the kitchen, like an extension of the backyard — bringing the sky-high interiors closer to earth, it creates a direct connection to nature, blurring the lines between interior and exterior spaces.

The design takes a playful turn in the den, an interior space that Poonam describes as “the womb” of the house. Ceilings are high and even topped with a skylight, but the room still has a cocooning effect thanks to rounded architectural details. Enhancing the cozy architecture, Unionworks chose materials and furniture that nod to the 70’s, an altogether relaxed vibe.

A deep shag rug lays the groundwork for the nostalgic scheme, like a corduroy sofa customized by The Future Perfect to fit the room’s exact dimensions — snug in all the right ways. “The credenza, by Fort Standard, is leaning mid-century with it’s Prouvé porthole panels,” explains Poonam. “But it remains connected to the 70’s with the olive green color we selected for those panels.”

With towering proportions in the main living areas, the bedrooms had more intimate layouts that didn’t require a heavy hand. “We wanted to keep the primary bedroom light and simple,” says Poonam of the stylish yet spare furnishing. And for a personal touch, Unionworks incorporated the client’s heritage into the scheme with subtle, meaningful details.

The bedroom’s shapely ‘Georgie’ ottomans, by Egg Collective, were thoughtfully upholstered with Scalamandré fabrics that nod to Persian roots; one section has pomegranates woven into the design, a reference to the Tree of Life. Little touches like these, from small trinkets to oriental rugs, pepper the project, bringing the client’s culture into the mix and into the heart of the home.

The bones of the project, once stark and industrial, are now soft and inviting. Its soaring interiors flow together, creating a functional home that’s above all unique — and beautifully intimate.

The fact that Olga Ashby is "tuned into every possible shade of white" is something that she attributes to a childhood spent in Siberia. There, she grew used to the nuances of sunlight bouncing off snow on the coldest winter days, or the particular cool light of a crisp, clear morning.

Decorating with white, says the interior designer, was a useful skill when it came to lending this apartment a sense of understated airiness, with its off-whites and deep creams, underpinned by the occasional shot of blue or green.

Olga was given one instruction when she took on the project: "Don’t play it safe", and, despite an easy-on-the-eye colour palette, the scheme uses texture and a touch of trickery to fulfil that brief.

Created for a busy working mother of two and inspired by Parisian style decor, the apartment has been reworked to incorporate a host of intricate design details, from discreetly placed lighting to make the ceilings look taller, to the entrance hall’s softly curved built-in storage, created to stand proud of the wall, rather than flush.

"I knew the owner had a certain design confidence when she rejected my first suggestions for her bathroom," says Olga. "She told me it was too conventional and I needed to go back to the drawing board. That was music to my ears."

The designer introduced a deep midnight blue to ground the scheme — one of the owner’s favourite colours — repeated in the electric blue convex artwork that hangs above the dining area’s fireplace. That set the tone for the renovation.

Key was navigating an awkward layout and maximising storage. "I love lateral living because it has the scope to feel really generous," says Olga, "but it can be challenging too. Success lies in carving storage out of every inch and ensuring there are no dead ends. I try to make sure that small apartments are based on the principle of circular space — that way you trick the eye into thinking that the home is bigger than it is."

Some creative tweaks to the layout were required to make it suitable for family life. "The owner wanted her children to have the biggest bedrooms, which meant being clever with storage in the smallest," says Olga. "It needed to incorporate a wardrobe and access to a small bathroom, previously reached from the hallway."

Space was stolen from the adjoining kitchen to create built-in cupboards, while a new mirror-fronted pocket door has turned the bathroom into an ensuite. "Our solution to its diminutive size was to position the basin under the window, topped by a removable mirror incorporated into the window ledge."

To increase flow and maximize light, Olga replaced two doors in the living room with Crittall windows. "I always introduce black into a scheme," she says. "It’s the equivalent of adding eyeliner when applying make-up." Opposite, she added mirrors in between the windows to amplify scale. Built-in alcoves in the dining area mirror those in the sitting zone and a TV is nestled behind a painting.

Softening touches prevail, including bouclé sofas and suede paneling in the living area and silk-covered joinery in the main bedroom. "The schemes are fresh and sensory," Olga reflects. "We paid attention to absolutely everything." It’s these subtle but creative design details that make the whole of this elegant apartment so much greater than the sum of its parts.

Alicia Meireles didn’t know what to expect from working with the first-time owners who approached the team at OWN LONDON to revamp their West London home. But, pairing a love of color and bold design with a desire to incorporate their Sri Lankan heritage gave the team more than enough to work with.

OWN's creative director notes that this was the client's first experience with a large-scale design project but that their goal to add a sense of history and heritage to the building struck a chord with the designer. Armed with an exciting brief, they started on creating the “warm and welcoming family home” that the clients wanted so desperately.

It was the house’s 19th-century facade, beautiful lateral space and high ceilings that initially drew the owners to the property. Small period details that the family had fallen for, like the stained-glass front door and cornicing details, were kept and allowed to shine thanks to a harmonious but vibrant scheme. Balancing open-plan layouts with an inviting color palette, inspired by Sri Lanka and seen most vibrantly in spaces like the living room with the wallpapered ceiling, meant none of the house's original Victorian charm was lost, but instead brought up to date and made to reflect its owner’s taste and heritage.

“Having been renting homes that lacked that sense of personality, there was a desire for this house to bring them memories of their childhood,” Alicia says. “Very quickly the team realized they were not afraid of color or bold designs, so the magic started.”

Given the go-ahead, OWN LONDON set out to incorporate natural textures and hues that brought a sense of nostalgia to the family’s new home. The team infused the palette with deep shades that complemented a more subtle base, pulling in Sri Lanka’s rich heritage of natural dyes and handmade textiles.

When it came to balancing principles from Sri Lankan tradition with the fresh design the couple asked for, Alicia said that the team kept the client's wishes at the forefront of all their decisions. "The owners both live pretty hectic lives and want to return home each day to something that is comfortable yet pleasing to the eyes," she says. "So balancing comfort and aesthetics was our principal focus."

One of the key changes they made was in opening up the floor plan. While many of the Victorian property's features helped ground the home, the 19th-century layout meant the building was divided into small rooms and narrow corridors which weren't best suited to modern living, and made the kitchen feel small.

While these larger structural changes made a big difference to the home, the true genius of the team is seen in their balanced use of color throughout the home. "Both owners grew up in leafy Sri Lanka living a very outdoorsy life so bringing the outdoors in was a must," Alicia recalls. "The introduction of terracotta tiles in the new extension was a no-brainer because it responds to that need but also pairs well with the orange brick walls from the original building."

When deciding how to approach putting the couple’s Sri Lankan heritage at the center of their scheme, Alicia and her team selected a few guiding principles to run all their decisions through. "The attention to craftsmanship details and the desire to bring the outdoors inside. Inspiration came from different fronts: some photographs the client shared, their passion for textured surfaces, and colonial-style furniture," Alicia says.

Materials and color were chosen with precision, so that no space or object felt unconsidered. The resulting design combines tones of terracotta with calming creams and textured fabrics to add intrigue and warmth. A bold blue living room where the family watch TV is one of the most striking spaces.

Opening up the floor plan means that the owner's get more use out of every square inch of their property, meaning none of their living space is wasted. While the open-plan arrangement allows the space to be more useful, it also presented an opportunity for the design team to section out the home with a clever use of color, keeping the sense of utility while not compromising on light or taking up space with physical partitions.

"The house is very big which allowed us to create different pockets of interest with different moods." Alicia says. The orangery, a new extension for the property, is a particular success, and one of the couple's favorite areas.

When it came to the individual spaces, the designers continued to divide the space. The property's size lent itself to this set up, with the modern bathroom using texture and natural materials to create interest and subtly divide up the different functions of the space.

"The main bathroom is very large, and we felt the need to almost subdivide it, even if only visually. We looked at ways to do it with different bold stones, but it felt overpowering considering the scale of the bathroom," Alicia says. "In the end, we decided to keep the bold stone on either side of the vanity and accentuate it with a tile layout, keeping the central core more calm."

These same principles carry through into the bedroom, this time using soft textiles as a parallel to the ensuite bathroom. "This was also the approach with the master bedroom, where the headboard has a strong colorful pattern but the walls remain calm with a neutral color."

Throughout their design, a neutral palette has been disrupted with a bold use of color clearly denoting the function of each space. Open plan living carries light through the downstairs living area but never compromises on warmth, inviting family, and friends into a functional yet beautiful space.

Sri Lankan design has been welcomed into the capital and infuses every corner of this home with a sense of history, calling on natural textures and hues that embrace both modern design and the client's heritage. What a place to call home.

In the five years I’ve edited Livingetc, Róisín Lafferty is the only interior designer whose work I’ve put on the cover twice. It’s down to her lavish use of stone in the most invitingly friendly spaces; her embrace of contemporary shapes to create rooms you want to sink into and, of course, her unparalleled use of boldly saturated colors – those crimsons, cobalts and emerald greens.

And all three of those sensibilities come together in perfectly balanced, yet kaleidoscopic, harmony for her latest project, a formerly unremarkable – now very remarkable – semi-detached modern home in a suburb of Dublin.

"The starting point for us is always how you want to feel in a room, what atmosphere you’re trying to evoke," Róisín says. "And here, we were going for calm. The house was so busy, the amount of stuff everywhere was overpowering. There was nowhere to put all the kids’ sports gear, for instance, so it just spilled out into the hall. We needed to simplify, calm it down, pare it back."

Róisín began by widening the hallway, making hidden doors full height and seamless, clad in the same materials as the walls so they almost disappear, no longer breaking the visual flow, a line that had previously been obstructed by "orange-y timber doors" and a "staircase that jutted into the space." Turning the first stair tread into a block made from the same terrazzo as the floor was a way to celebrate this feature.

Then there are those arches, which started as the shape of the doorway linking the hallway to the kitchen and were replicated 25 times throughout, appearing on floors, as the shape of the lights above the living area, on the curve of the storage next to the kitchen island. "We wanted that continuity, so each arch shares the same radius," Róisín says. "It makes the house very playful, very graphic, and it guides you through the home, softening the transitions between rooms."

The biggest change Róisín made was to the layout. "The majority of people in Ireland live in semi-detached homes, and they’re very prescriptive," she says. "The rooms are set out in a certain way, and so you feel you have to live in that certain way. You have the power to alter your behaviour – to change where you sit, where you eat – by altering the footprint."

So the once unloved “dumping ground” room between kitchen extension and front room became a music room, and the attic was opened up to be a hang-out area for the kids. Perhaps bravest was the decision to fill in the kitchen window, above where the sink now is. "The builders thought I was mad, and the owners took some convincing," Róisín says.

"We needed to bring the eye to the back wall, and by blocking up the window, we got more of a balance of symmetry. It feels bigger now." Unsurprisingly, the red travertine kitchen is where the family spends most time. "It’s a very hardwearing space. The owners are a busy, bustling family and they needed it to function for real life," Róisín says. But alongside that is the opulence that only Róisín's love of crafting stone can bring. "It feels so rich," she adds. Rich and calm and colorful.

"The flat was not in a nice state when I first saw it," explains the architect Charles Wu, founder of the award-winning design practice Polysmiths. "The floorboards had curled out and it smelled of damp — it was a mess."

Just a few weeks after its owner, German journalist Christoph Halstenberg, moved in, a flash flood forced him to move out again. However, this misfortune turned out to be a blessing, because the work needed to transform the dated, gloomy flat into a modern home had to be actioned sooner than originally planned.

"The client bought it thinking he could live there for a bit," explains Charles Wu. When the flood struck, the owner took the opportunity to do a full renovation — and, of course, some essential flood-proofing.

The end result - which included a single-storey extension half-sunk into the garden, bringing lush greenery right up to the windows - is "like being in a hut and living outside," says Charles.

"From wherever you’re standing, you see the garden." Externally, the new extension was wrapped with Siberian larch slats for wisteria to grow around, so that "it would eventually look like part of the garden," says Charles.

Indeed, he named the property Walden, after the book by the 19th-century American naturalist Henry David Thoreau, which documents his two-year experiment living in a cabin in the woods.

Nature has informed the decorative brief, too: "All the materials we used are real and honest — wood, steel, glass. They’re all close to the elements." There’s solid oak wood flooring, pine joinery around the windows, and recycled ashwood boards on the ceiling, plus a natural palette graduating from pale grey in the living area to dark green in the bedrooms.

But perhaps the best natural ingredient here is sunlight. That wasn’t the case initially: "The flat had a deep and narrow floor plan, and is 12 metres from front to back," explains Charles. "So the middle got really dark."

Charles installed a pitched roof with three angled skylights, which pours light "much more deeply into the floor plan," he explains, "but also gives privacy", as previously the neighbours had a direct view into the basement. And around the windowless bathroom in the middle of the floor plan, Charles installed a glass brick screen, "borrowing natural light from the living room."

To ensure that the flat is now flooded with sunlight only, Polysmiths implemented various flood-proofing strategies. For starters, that verdant garden is designed to provide drainage. The builders removed the thick London clay soil surrounding the foundations, and filled the space with topsoil, which "is easier for water to run off," Charles says.

Underground French drains, storm valves and a pump were also laid, to channel excess water towards the sewage system, while external walls were tanked and treated with damp-resistant slurry, then painted with breathable limewash paint, "so that if moisture comes up from the ground, it doesn’t get stuck behind the paint," explains Charles.

The garden was then planted with longer-rooting vegetation to soak up more water. The plants had other jobs too: "We planted things that smelled good, such as roses, lavender, and jasmine," says Charles. "When the client opens the window, his head is at the same level as them." Another thoughtful touch that marks the extent of the flat’s transformation.

When the iconic, oversized, Charles Zana sofa that Isabelle Dubern-Mallevays bought for her Parisian-chic-meets-London-classic apartment wouldn’t go up the stairs, she hired a crane, took out a window, and made a hole in the ceiling to allow it in.

"It was worth it as it set the scene for the flat and is a major contributor to the slightly masculine London club atmosphere I wanted to achieve," she says, speaking of her modern home, an apartment on the third floor of a Victorian townhouse in South-West London.

Eight years ago Isabelle employed those same problem-solving skills when she dreamed of owning a Pierre Yovanovitch Papa Bear armchair which at the time was only available via interior designers commissioning a whole project. She had bumped into a friend, Anna Zaoui, at the Chelsea Flower Show, who happened to have commissioned Pierre to design her Manhattan apartment.

"Anna offered to add the chair to her order for me and I jumped at the chance," says Isabelle, who at the time was working for Dior Maison after a stint as a lifestyle editor at Bloomberg. "Then we began a conversation about how sad it was that so many beautiful pieces remained hidden and unavailable. They were “invisible” really to design amateurs and collectors — anyone, in fact, who didn’t want, or didn’t have the wherewithal, to commission a whole project."

And so a business idea was born and the friends teamed up with a third partner, Lily Froehlicher, to create a platform offering high-end design pieces to all. The Invisible Collection is now sold online and through their flagships in London, New York and Paris, as well as global pops ups.

As you would expect, Isabelle’s home is a testament to previously unavailable design pieces and acts as a mini showroom as well. "It’s sad if smaller items like a piece of art or an occasional table disappear, but there is always something new and exciting to replace it, so it’s not so bad," she says. Isabelle and husband, Pierre Mallevays, who are both French, live between this Victorian apartment in South West London and a flat in Paris which is, "maybe more sophisticated, but less comfortable."

"We had the bonus of renting this flat for a while before buying it four years ago," says Isabelle of the property which overlooks a quiet garden square at the front - which they have a key to - and a churchyard garden at the back. The flat, previously owned by a "Chic Scottish woman," was charming but old-fashioned, so they re-did the bathroom and the kitchen.

Other work was focused on the decoration: painting all the rooms in a calming gray-beige and adding two enviable walls of storage in the large living room — one hidden storage behind wall paneling, the other made up of shelves for books.

Although pared back so its classic bones of wide wooden boards and big windows are enhanced, the apartment gets a contemporary twist from the addition of muted modern colors and textures — decorating with neutrals, largely, but with the additional unexpected accent.

"We have used lots of greige, brown, dark blue, and pale pink tones in different materials, including velvet, wool, and cashmere," says Isabelle. "I loved every minute of the project, it was the first with my husband and I wanted to create the perfect London home for us."

When there the couple enjoy quiet evenings, reading and relaxing or hosting friends and family for intimate dinners. They have also been known to spend time working from that sofa. "It has paid us back for all the angst of its installation," says Isabelle. "And in case you’re asking, it’s staying put for the foreseeable."

Interior and architectural designer Kristina Crestin has had plenty of fabulous design opportunities in her life (her time on hit show Farmhouse Fixer among them), but she had never revamped a home on an operational farm — until now, that is. 'We were pretty excited to get this one,' she says of her latest farmhouse redesign, 'because it was a working farm and we don't have a lot of opportunities to work with a working farm.' Jonathan Knight, Kristina's counterpart and the show's host, 'was just so excited about all the tractors and the animals and the gardening.'

But of course, there is more pressure when you're revamping something that's 'part of someone's heritage,' she explains. You 'really want to nail it.' And in this case, the farm had been in the family for three generations, so 'I'd say the stress level is a little higher.'

The homeowners already had a 'basic set of floor plans with the layout that they wanted to achieve,' so it was a bit easier to get the ball rolling this time around. Eventually, the family plans to move to the other side of the house and lease the revamped portion as a wedding rental property. As Jonathan and Kristina developed their plans, they were consequently tasked with balancing the 'wear and tear' of a young family with the long-term viability of the space as a future rental and venue.

Crafting the Kitchen

The clients were big fans of local and reclaimed materials, which naturally became an integral part of the decorating process.

The kitchen is the perfect example of this. The family loved their original four-legged dining table, but the design wasn't quite right for the new space. Rather than throwing it out, Kristina made a few tweaks to turn it into a pedestal table that better served the room. She kept the family's original dining chairs, but sourced the granite countertops from New York. The updated flooring is all reclaimed white oak. And the moody blue cabinetry was inspired by and matched to the farm's blue barn doors, which Kristina also saw as a future branding choice for the rental property.

Crafting the living room

The living room was a bit harder. For starters, the space was smaller and more awkward. 'This is not where they chose [to spend] their budget,' Kristina said of the clients. When design talks began, she encouraged them to keep things 'light and bright for now because the room was already pretty petite in scale,' and 'a lot of this ended up being decorating [...] as opposed to interior architecture.'

The extent of the renovation was really just 'building a new wall and insulating it' ... although finding those exposed beams was quite the happy accident. Once demo was complete, Kristina saw that the old joists were in 'fantastic shape.' So 'we made the decision to go ahead and insulate for sound in between the joists and put some blue board between them' to add an open textured feel that wasn't too heavy. The result is a room that looks much warmer than it would have without that ceiling design.

Otherwise, the star of the living room is the seltzer bottle wall, which was a 'complete surprise,' Kristina says. Eventually, this will be a space for the groom to get ready so the family wanted to build an 'Instagrammable moment' into the design. Inspired by her own collection, Kristina decided that a wall covered in reclaimed seltzer bottles could be the very thing the space was missing. She had to source 91 individual bottles, which 'turned out to be way more [difficult] than you think.'

But it came together perfectly. 'I love when I can meld really good interior architecture and get the bones of the renovation right and balance it with decorating skills.' she says. Add in the old New York theater seats, a cabinet from Vermont, and an old chalkboard Kristina had been saving, and she had herself a brand new space. The bottle wall even lights up for a subtle, functional glow.

Finessing the bathroom

The family was very open to a moodier, slightly less practical design here because they have a full bathroom upstairs they could use if needed.

'I found the soapstone sink really early on,' Kristina tells me. 'The day I met [the family], before we even cast them in the show, I wandered the whole property and saw things and I photographed the upside-down back of the sink.' And when the time came, it seemed like a 'really good idea to use something from the property.'

'Seeing the family and meeting them, I didn't want this bathroom to be a cave, so we went dark in the shower and let that be [...] the moody, handsome moment.'

Regarding counter space, Kristina was conscious that her initial design didn't leave much space for a bar of soap or a vase full of flowers. So she sketched out a 'half wall' that could be used for art or mirrors or even storage.

'What's really interesting is this was one of our smaller projects and it doesn't feel so small once you kind of get into it,' Kristina says. 'I think there's so many layers and a richness design-wise.'

'On the day we first met, Michael had a large, very modern navy sectional from a major retailer that was scheduled for delivery,' recalls Los Angeles-based interior designer Victoria Holly. However, having only known her newest client for less than half an hour, Victoria knew she had to intervene to help him realize his style dreams in his builder-grade home in the Pacific Palisades.

'It was a bold first meeting move but after 10 minutes of meeting him, I said, “Please don’t kill me, but you have to cancel that order." He knew the home style he loved but had no idea how to make it happen,' she says. 'We promptly canceled that sectional delivery and started from scratch! From there, we did a deep dive into understanding his style.'

This process led to a modern home that makes bold strokes with its design, but that, above all, feels undeniably mellow. From the interesting yet calm approach to color to sourcing furniture and decor that brought history and patina to the rooms, here's how Victoria brought charm and character to what was once a largely non-descript property.

Defining the style

Michael's interior design style turned out to be a lot more eclectic and interesting than his choice of navy blue sectional first suggested. 'It’s hard to pinpoint his style exactly — it’s a little grand millennial, a little postmodern, a little antique, and a little unexpected,' Victoria tells us. 'He also loved a dark and moody vibe — emulating cozy winter days.'

'There were so many stylistic directions we could take the house — and so we came up with the idea to do a little bit of a different version of his style within each room,' she adds.

Sourcing the soul

The client's brief also asked for a home that felt unique — where you would look around and not be able to spot things from well-known stores. This led to Victoria curating the space hand in hand with the client from places like estate sales, auctions and sites like Chairish, eBay and Etsy.

'I will be honest, as an interior designer, this was stressful at first,' Victoria says. 'We like to manage the entire process and that includes sourcing too! But when it comes to vintage items, usually a client has to be way more involved, and you’re looking for the right piece, as opposed to going by store or manufacturer with ready-made or custom items.'

This meant shifting Victoria's usual sourcing process to a more involved model. 'It meant a lot of weekend text messages of photos from estate sales; Facetimes while vintage shopping. We even went to the same estate sale once (and missed each other by an hour), where we spotted the same great x-bench now in front of his fireplace.

'We also utilized eBay and Etsy a lot, where you have to be fast otherwise things can be sold quickly,' Victoria recalls. 'There were so many amazing pieces and so many great stories behind each one. I still love the primary bathroom mirror which he found on Facebook Marketplace and legitimately asked the young woman selling it if it was haunted!'

Instilling character

While this painstakingly sourced furniture brings soul to the home, its backdrop also needed a little love to bring it in line with the client's style ambitions. 'It was a builder-grade property that needed some love and soul,' Victoria says. 'He wanted a fun and whimsical home that was great for entertaining. Something where fun is found in every corner.'

From paint to wall paneling, decorative touches make this once-plain space come alive, and clever design additions make the existing features now really pop, such as the shelving in the home office. 'These shelves were existing and they were just outdated and boring,' Victoria explains. 'We swapped out the hardware and decided to wallpaper the backs with a fun and playful wallpaper. Then to further dramatize the wallpaper, we went with all-black decor. And we wanted to have pink shine in a moment in the house.'

The blue door trim is another great detail that makes standard interior doors feel special. It's painted in Benjamin Moore's Aegean Teal.

Creating with color

It's not the only way color has been implemented in uniquely interesting ways, from textiles and wallpaper to the paint ideas for walls, the designer has taken bold swings with the palette. 'We just had fun and picked things we loved, and we did break a few design rules here, like mixing different paint colors on different walls,' Victoria says. 'There are three wall paint colors in the living room and a wallpaper. And we mixed a lot of different competing fabrics in the plaid guest bedroom for something fun and unexpected — it matches because it doesn’t match!'

'The barstool fabric had so many fun patterns and colors in it,' Victoria adds. 'Also the rug with tones of purple, mauve, and teals. We wanted it moody but not black. So we opted for gem tones.'

It's an approach that feels cohesive but organic — less a precisely designed interior, and more like one that feels like it's developed over time. 'We didn’t worry too much about the overall theme but rather focused on what we loved in each specific room and then designed around it.'

'And in the end a theme ran through the house that worked out well. I don’t know if I could tell you what that theme was! Maybe blues, pinks, and greens. Maybe a love for pattern and unique vintage pieces. Sometimes if you design around things you love, a theme appears and the house doesn’t feel like the house of a million wallpapers or fabrics!'

Get the look

Perhaps the most challenging client an interior designer has to work with is themselves. At least, this was the case with Molly Kidd, co-founder of Light and Dwell, who along with the firm's other partner Aymee Kuhlman, decided to take on the task of designing her Oregon farmhouse. With fresh ideas, vibrant mood boards, and creativity abound, and with a need to have a beautiful, snug family nest, Molly found, both comfort and a big learning opportunity while taking on the reigns of this project. 

'The biggest learning from this project was experiencing the footprint and living in the space after designing it,' says Molly. 'We are already dreaming up our next one!'

While putting together a cohesive plan that was both functional and tasteful was no small feat, in the end, the home is a culmination of European and vintage 'ranch-style' elements, with some inspiration drawn from the Pacific Northwest. Stylish yet timeless – just the ideal modern home. 

From custom furniture pieces to whimsical decor elements and warm paint colors, the house perfectly captures the mix of classic and contemporary of a transitional style home. We take a tour. 

Entrance

In the entrance, light freely enters through the glass door and the small window above. The small entryway is a neutral space punctuated with deeper tones emanating from the black door and console from Four Hands. A mirror from Rejuvenation placed atop the console, plus a lamp from the brand’s vintage shop adds a wonderful peppering to the scheme. 

For the ideal farmhouse feel, a whimsical lantern from Circa Lighting hangs next to the door. A brown and beige rug lays on the floor; the wood bench was a vintage find. 

'We used a rug in the entryway for added texture and interest,' says Molly. 'It creates a cozy mood as soon as you enter the home and sets the tone for the neutral palette. We also adore a checkered pattern.'

Living room

The cozy living room is designed such that the entire family can spend hours here, talking, reading, or lounging around. The sink-in sofas, plenty of cushions, and a fireplace create a wonderful mood. Not to forget the wall paneling that further adds a warm feeling.

'Classic tongue and groove in a vertical presentation are timeless and versatile,' says Molly. 'It is a great backdrop for an eclectic mix of styles.'

This room, much like the entrance, is bathed in neutral tones, while a wood table from McGee & Co(placed behind the couch) as well as a vintage wood side table with a ceramic lamp from Circa Lighting add a snug vibe. 

The white and brown living room with an earthy sofa from LuLu and Georgia and another beige loveseat to match create layering. The coffee table upholstered in a Vintage Kilim Rug made of Thimblecloth adds a softness to the room. The vintage, beige patterned rug from Found Home Shop ties everything together. 

'We wanted to incorporate lots of warm, neutral hues inspired by the nature of the Pacific Northwest,' says Molly. 'Warm whites, creams, and browns were the focal point in this home. Olive green is also my favorite color so we had to sprinkle that throughout.'

Kitchen

When it comes to designing spaces, the kitchen is Molly's favorite to design. The same was true in her own home. 

'I love an open kitchen to act as a communal space,' says Molly. 'It is the heart of the home and so creating a space where conversation, cooking, and hospitality can all happen simultaneously was important.'

The open-plan kitchen with a moody palette, along with open and closed storage is the ideal space to cook and even socialize in. The tall wooden stools from Ballard Designs placed by the island ensure that the family can gather here to help with the cooking or even enjoy quick meals. 

'We were intentional with the layout and minimizing clutter,' says Molly. 'There is a pantry right off the kitchen that stores dry provisions and not-so-pretty counter items like appliances, etc.'

The kitchen cabinet color is Sherwin Williams’ Natural which plays into the cooler tones of the kitchen, and the living room. The countertop in leathered black granite adds dimension to the rest of the space. The sleek pendants from deVOL Kitchens provide extra lighting in the workspace. 

Molly wanted to incorporate some brass details as well with the sink faucet, also from deVOL Kitchens, and the sconces by Circa Lighting. She placed a vintage rug under the sink to make the wood floor feel cozier. 

'We wanted an organic and earthy element in the kitchen,' says Molly. 'We love the look of handmade imperfect perfection with the tiles. Plus, adding a vintage runner creates warmth and is the perfect lived-in layer.'

Laundry room

The laundry room is highlighted with wood accents on the countertop, along with wall paneling to further accentuate the farmhouse feel. The faucet from Kingston Brass and a fan-like pendant from Huey Lightshop add a soft, calming touch to the space. 

To elevate this area and add extra functionality, a small seating nook was created. 'We wanted a casual dining space,' says Molly. 'Sixpenny did not disappoint with its elevated yet relaxed banquette'

The reading corner is made cozy with cushions, with custom gingham patterns from ThimbleCloth. The space is also adorned with an array of vintage pillows from Etsy, making it the perfect spot to curl up with a good book and cup of coffee. 

Powder room

Off of the laundry room is a powder room; small yet impactful. This space offers another moody moment in the home's color story. The dark green walls add depth to the room and Molly incorporated gold accents with the mirror from 1stDibs and a sconce from Huey Lightshop to add a sparkle to the scheme. 

Stone accessories from Shoppe Amber Interiors are found on the sink as well as a patterned towel hanging from Heather Taylor Home. 

'We wanted a moody space that was unexpected in the home,' says Molly. 'The powder bath was the perfect place to do that.'

Master bedroom

The wonderful paneling seen in the laundry room and living room makes another appearance in the master bedroom. The wooden bed frame from Crate & Barrel is topped with plush Parachute bedding, giving rise to an elegant, yet cozy, warm bedroom, perfect for sleep. 

A patterned rug from Interior Define adds layering to the room, and a nightstand from McGee & Co. with a ceramic lamp from Troy Lighting contributes to the comfort.

'For the rug, we thought 'Go big or go home,' says Molly. 'The rug should have a calculated ratio to the size of your bed. Rugs are all about scale and impact.'

An armchair placed in the corner of the bedroom offers an extra space to relax. Plus a standing lamp offers the perfect task lighting for any kind of focused work. Storage unit by the OFFCUT Handmade dresser is placed next to it. 

'Coziness was the main factor,' says Molly. 'We wanted to maximize seating whether it was to read a book, put on your shoes or place your laundry while folding.'

Master bathroom

The master bathroom is calm and serene with a big white tub at the center of the room. Molly brought in gold accents for the bathroom with the pendant from Rejuvenation and faucets. The vintage stool and wooden dresser add dimension to the white walls. To add movement to the scheme, dainty checks on the gingham curtains and rug lift the mood. 

A Carrara Marble is used on the countertops on the vanity with custom cabinets. Hanging above the vanity is a mirror from CB2 and sconces with gold details from Circa Lighting. 

'We chose to use a rug in the bathroom for warmth, texture, color, and comfortability in the bathroom,' says Molly.

Daughters' bedroom

Molly's two daughters' shared bedroom drenched in deep pink is an embracing, cocooning space. For the beds, Molly chose a mixture of patterns with ginghams and polka dots using pillows from McGee & Co. Above each bed, a bronze sconce was added from Mullan lighting. A striped rug on the floor makes the room feel homier and a dark wood table divides the two beds. 

'We knew we wanted our girls to share a room so I placed a window right in the middle for natural light and an organic barrier between sides to create a little bit of individuality,' says Molly.

Son's bedroom

The son's green bedroom, with the color, splashed across the walls and bedding, is a lively yet perfect space to wind down in. The throw pillows add comfort to the bed, and dimension. On the walls are artworks by Chelsea Pataja and a sconce from Schoolhouse. 

'My son and I share the same favorite color – olive green – so this was a nod to him,' says Molly.

Robert Novogratz, April 6

The Novogratz family have featured in Livingetc many times, and so it's exciting to be able to hear about their LA home in Robert Novogratz's own words. It's a 1920s ‘castle’ in the Hollywood Hills, with a large basement with a cinema room, music room, home office, wine cellar and bar, WC, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The ground floor has an open-plan dining room, kitchen and family room, plus a separate living room, laundry room, one  bedroom and three bathrooms. The master suite with bedroom, bathroom and  walk-in wardrobe, plus another bedroom, playroom and bathroom, are on the  first floor.

Rayman Boozer,  April 13

Rayman Boozer's home was featured in our February 2021 issue, and was a welcome dose of color inspiration in the middle of winter. The founder of design agency Apartment 48, Rayman's live-work loft apartment is a converted factory in NoHo, New York, bought from one of the Jonas brothers.As well as a covetable way with blue paint, it has an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area, an office area, a master bedroom with en suite and a further bathroom.

SARAH SHERMAN SAMUEL, April 20

Sarah Sherman Samuel's house was the cover story of Livingetc in July 2020. It's a fairly recently built house on a wooded hill in Michigan.   ‘It’s a house of contradictions and the playful design veers towards asymmetry,’ Sarah says. ‘It was built in 1980 but it has mid-century and post-modern elements. There are amazing features everywhere, like the giant circular skylight in the family room. I knew that I wanted to change the floor plan significantly but I loved the overall whimsical element of the property.’

Jonathan Adler, April 27

Design legend Jonathan Adler has created a whole aesthetic, filled with wit, gilt edges and fun shapes.  And no more so than at his home, an apartment in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York. In 2001 he doubled the square footage and bought the adjacent unit, filling the space with Jonathan’s trademark witty pieces and, in his words, Modern American Glamour.

The clever use of a monochrome palette by Sarah-Louise Marks

Creative director Sarah-Louise Marks has chosen to stick to monochrome for her home, but that's not always the easy choice. Look closely, and there are many clever tricks to make this scheme stand out, from use of texture, subtle marble patterns and even in the occasional flash of bottle green. 

Sarah-Louise tackled the project in two phases - first to renovate the home nicely enough to live in, then to turn into their dream house.

She put the original panelling back on the walls, added cast iron radiators and painted the staircase black, all of which add instant drama, character and charm.

Sarah-Louise designed the marble coffee table herself, and says it has become a real talking point.

The bedroom was made extra plush and comfortable, designed to be a haven for Sarah-Louise to come back to as, in normal times, she travels a lot for work.

The artful use of materials by Steve Nash

Interior designer Steve Nash is the founder and creative force behind the studio ALL & NXTHING, and he has used many of his skills on his own home.

A converted Victorian cottage in North London, there are plenty of interesting materials at work here. From the microcement that is used on the floor of the living room and wall of the bathroom to the reclaimed parquet that Steve has turned into a kitchen island, there are beautiful surprises everywhere.  

Steve says his aim for the extended cottage was to create a space that feels cosy, while also being a place that lent itself nicely to social gatherings. And so the dark concrete and dark paints create a cosseting atmosphere, while the island was purposefully large for people to gather around at parties. 

Throughout the home,  brilliantly smart ideas exist to make the most of the space. The vanity, built into the bedroom storage, is a particularly brilliant way of getting a lot from a narrow space.

The double height bathroom is great for growing plants, which Steve says love the humidty.

THE CLEVER use of space by Tamzin Greenhill

Interior designer Tamzin Greenhill's beautiful London home is full of smart space usage ideas, turning it into a house that really works for the way she lives. Its storey are split level, so by having very few doors she was able to help make it feel open anyway, and her wise zoning techniques have lead to different areas being able to fulfil different functions.

Tamzin admits to being obsessed with lighting, and there are several statement pendants that appear throughout the home.

Almost all the walls in the home are kept a soothing shade of white, but for the hall floor Tamzin used these tiled by Emery and Cie which she chose for their timeless yet elegantly modern feel.

THE CLEVER DECOR OF  Angela Simpson

Interior designer Angela Simpson is one half of Simpson Voyle, who together are the brains behind this beautiful London home. It was featured as part of a Christmas story in Livingetc - its fireplace held an iconic garland - and now is the chance to see it without all its festive adornment.

As an interiors photographer, Paul is always soaking up ideas for his own home when taking pictures of other peoples'.

Although the house has period features and a strong historical background, Angela wanted it to feel inviting, warm, welcoming and wasn't afraid to use modern colours. 

"It was a blend of vintage and new pieces that really brought the house to life," Angela says.

Throughout the home, stripes are a key feature, bringing with them a sense of bold, graphic playfulness. From the carpet on the stairs to the rugs in the living room, Angela used them to bring the home to life.

EPISODE 1 - AT HOME WITH PAUL CRAIG

Interiors photographer Paul Craig has invited us in to his six bedroom Victorian villa in south London. Full of dramatic design ideas, it's a show stopping home which offers plenty of decor inspiration.

As an interiors photographer, Paul is always soaking up ideas for his own home when taking pictures of other peoples'.

Paul wanted to create a grand entrance that made an impression as soon as people arrived at his home. The dark floors were chosen because of the sense of drama they bring to this large, open space. 

Despite the large size of the home, the kitchen was relatively small when Paul moved in. Extending it out was his first big job - he likes to cook and this was always going to be an important space. The patinated look of the modern kitchen cabinets enhances the luxe feel. 

The grey living room feels light and airy, a mix of classically shaped furniture and quirky objets like the statue of the dog and the mounted skull. EPISODE 8 - AT HOME WITH JULIA THOMPSON

Interior designer, Julia Thompson has invited us in to the home she shares with her husband Paul and son Frank. The couple's home gives vintage a new twist, mixed with rock ’n’ roll photography, iconic movie poster prints and quirky collectables.

Julia has always had an eye for the uncommon beauty of vintage pieces and the home she shares with her husband Paul and their son Frank brings out the glamorous side of all things aged.

For Julia, creating a look that’s fresh – and 100 per cent granny-free – is all about how she puts old and new pieces together. ‘The beauty of using vintage items is that it stirs you into being creative, as you’ve got to give them a different character,’ she says. ‘You have to add your own twist.’

Julia worked as a fashion stylist for several years, so mixing, rearranging and what she calls ‘endlessly frou-frouing’ come naturally to her.

The family has lived in this Georgian townhouse for 10 years, but reinventing its style and structure has been a slow-burner, rather than a rush-in-and-rip-out project.

The kitchen sits between the family and dining areas in this long, open-plan space.

Three years ago, the couple finally bit the bullet and reworked the house’s layout. Robert Dye Architects created a double-height extension at the back, which added a study to the higher level and a large kitchen-diner at garden level. A set of roof lights and subtle vertical openings between levels allow a free flow of light, so the two floors feel connected.

Previously, there was an Eighties-style conservatory at the back of the house. 

Once the extension was complete, the pair complemented it with a garden redesign by Barbara Samitier, turning a stretch of wrecked lawn into a sequence of serene spaces full of lush greenery and linked by paved paths. 

The garden design works especially well because Barbara looked at the house’s interior style before she undertook any work outside.

Back inside, Julia's interesting finds range from mid-century sofas to iconic film and exhibition posters.

A double-height void above this reading corner allows ample natural light to flow down into the lower-ground floor, while lush plants add to the indoor-outdoor mood.

By mixing pieces that whisper of a glamorous past with a dash of modernity, Julia’s home feels contemporary. Lighting by Jasper Morrison, a De La Espada coffee table and a supersized Poliform bed all add polish to the weathered edges.

EPISODE 7 - AT HOME WITH DAVE BENNETT

Fashion Marketing Consultant, Dave Bennett, has opened the doors to the elegant Georgian home he shares with his husband Gareth Orr, where modern-day masterpieces rub shoulders with junk-shop finds against a palette of historic hues and luxe materials.

Dave and Gareth had decided they wanted a genuine period house, but one that wasn’t a typical family home.

Then this Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse in a fashionable north London neighbourhood caught their eye. At 1,800 square feet, there was plenty of space, but the conventional layout jarred with their lifestyle. 

The couple spent the first year sorting out the structural stuff, damp issues and so on, which meant they had time to live in the house, consider how the light worked and how best to rejig the rooms to suit them.

Originally arranged as a traditional four-bedder, the thoughtful rethink saw the house transformed into something much more them: a deluxe two bed, with various entertaining spaces, all drenched in the personalities of its owners. 

The bland, all-cream colour scheme was jettisoned in favour of atmospheric and historic hues of grey, purple and green, used as a backdrop to enhance the elegant pieces of bespoke joinery, luxe surfaces and rich, masculine materials, such as walnut, marble and slate.

For inspiration, the couple borrowed more from a mid-century aesthetic than from the Georgian roots you might expect.

As a result, furniture by a wealth of designer names peppers the rooms, especially when it comes to chairs, with pieces by Charles and Ray Eames, Norman Cherner and Hans J Wegner all getting a showing.

But for all the luxurious flourishes in the main living spaces, the kitchen is the couple’s go-to spot for relaxing.

Having toyed briefly with traditional timber kitchens, eventually they settled on a bespoke Jack Trench design. Replacing an elderly Ikea number, it delivers a sleek mélange of walnut cabinetry and marble work surfaces and there’s a cool central island, perfect for food prep as well as for socialising.

Most importantly, the house’s abundant wall space allows the pair to accommodate all their accumulated artwork.

A red stair carpet injects a pop of vibrancy to the neutral scheme.

SHOP DAVE'S KEY PIECES

Instead of white for a gallery wall, Dave opted for purple as a backdrop to a mix of high and low end art works, which come from junk shops as well as galleries.

EPISODE 6 - AT HOME WITH CHELSEA DIXON

Interior designer, Chelsea Dixon walks us around the property she shares with her husband Rob, an interior architect, to let us in on how they pooled their talents to turn a once rundown London townhouse into a Parisian style home.

Chelsea, a former actress with a knack for interiors, and her husband, Rob, who trained at the Architectural Association, set up a property and design business six years ago. 

Their speciality is transforming lacklustre properties for re-sale, and all of their projects are defined by an eye for proportion, light and budget.

Their own house reflects their shared priorities. While the decoration is simple – grey and white walls, subdued linen curtains – the emphasis is on architectural detailing. 

‘Purely contemporary interiors date quickly, but if you define rooms with traditional features it makes everything timeless,’ says Chelsea.

Chelsea’s father, a joiner, made the kitchen. Lined in walnut, the cupboards provide stealthy storage for toys and paraphernalia. The La Cornue range cooker and tall mirror add Gallic élan. ‘I love the way French interiors can be both classical and minimal,’ says Chelsea. 

Her father also made the sturdy, glass- topped dining table.

EPISODE 5 - AT HOME WITH CLAIRE READ

Art Historian, Claire Read, has opened the doors to the home she shares with her husband, Simon, a media consultant and their two children, to lift the lid on how they created this open, flowing space.

The project was a tired, five-storey home in southwest London, which the couple planned to radically redesign, through a series of rear and side extensions, clever glazing and the addition of an extra floor in the basement  which the builders had to dig down six metres to create.

The family moved out during the renovation and relocated in the South of France. would fly home regularly to check in with architect Jo Cowen and the build team.

To achieve the kind of open, flowing space the family craved, Jo recommended the floors be levelled and to lose the returns and half-staircases typically found in properties of this age.

The entire back of the house had to come down. Now, the property's contemporary interior is a glorious surprise hiding behind a period façade.

It isn’t the architecture alone that helps six storeys function as one flowing home. It’s the décor too.

Once the couple had decided on the pale wood flooring, the whole space came together.

The fireplace was custom-made from blue limestone in Turkey. A classic sofa is teamed with a funky pendant, demijohns picked up in France and a sleek glass table. From here the family enjoy movie nights on their LG 77" Oled TV.

The white Paola Navone sofa and armchairs have removable, washable covers that don't need ironing - essential with two young children.

A beautifully sleek white kitchen stretches along the centre of the lower-ground floor. The island is 4.5m long, and at one end is an LG wine cellar, which comes into its own when the couple have friends and family over.

In addition, a monochrome palette forms the backdrop and a tactile mix of natural materials, including linen, sisal and marble, features throughout.

While this recipe may seem Scandi in flavour, the couple have seasoned it with French finds, many carried back in their hand luggage.

There’s a mix of contemporary and antique furniture too and lots of art. Yet behind the gorgeous look runs a stream of practicality.

EPISODE 4 - AT HOME WITH ANITA GROSSMAN

Anita Grossman, founder of Photographic & Styling Agency, A&R Creative has invited us into her home, to share how she and her husband, Lee Redmond, founder of design and build company, Lee Redmond Interiors brought their beautiful Victorian villa back to life.

A hidden gem it may have been, but it was also jaw-droppingly awful in another way, as Anita and husband Lee Redmond had to contemplate just how much of a project it would be to bring this north London villa back up to scratch. Inside, it had been sliced up into five bedsits and was dark and dank throughout.

Lee brought his building expertise to bear, stripping the property back to its bones before reconfiguring its layout. While the ground floor was levelled, extra height was added to the loft by lowering the floor below, and, subsequently, the floor below that.

One major factor the couple had to overcome was siting the new kitchen extension at the back of the building, so that it didn’t overlook any of the neighbouring gardens.

The epic proportions of the new extension are clearly evident here, with light now pouring into the house from all directions.

The beautifully designed kitchen, is – like much of the fixtures around the house – all of Lee’s work. The island has a composite-stone worktop, all beautifully bookmarked, as if it were marble.

More exquisite finishes are evident throughout the revamped villa, such as the reinstated cornices and the crafted window shutters that echo the property’s provenance.

EPISODE 3 - AT HOME WITH REBECCA WAKEFIELD

Interior Designer, Rebecca Wakefield, has invited us in to share how she and her Quantity Surveyor, partner, turned a London terrace into a calm oasis of cool. 

Rebecca's ethos is to design projects with the intention to make spaces feel calm, bright and timeless – and this was the focus for her own home, too. Quite a feat with two kids under two.

Taking on a wreck that hadn’t been touched for 50 years was all part of the game plan for Rebecca and her partner, Josh. 

To better manage the renovation, the couple divided it into two phases. The first involved the complete refurbishment of the upper level, along with the two ground-floor living rooms.

New internal walls were installed upstairs, engineered oak chevron flooring was laid downstairs and the entire house was rewired and re-plumbed. It was important to both Rebecca and Josh that they restore their home’s Victorian charm so they reinstated features sympathetic to its era, after ripping out those that had been added during the 1950s.

The second phase  involved the refurbishment of the kitchen, including extending into its side return. A relatively narrow space with a low ceiling, it was opened up with the installation of a large skylight. By extending the chevron flooring into this area, installing generous openings to the garden and whitewashing the new brick party wall, the room feels all the brighter and fresher.

The house now has the vibe of a beachside abode in Sydney rather than a small terrace in London, thanks to Rebecca’s use of materials and colour palettes that are natural, neutral and pared-back. 

In the kitchen, the pale green joinery was inspired by the garden’s overgrown jasmine bush. The hue gives the room the desired calming effect, while creating a visual connection between inside and out.

In the rest of the house the palettes are similarly muted, complemented by Rebecca’s understated styling.

The outcome is laid-back yet sophisticated and highly personalised. Every item has a story, from Rebecca’s cherished bobbin rocking chair purchased on eBay to the artwork sourced from local artists.

EPISODE 2 - AT HOME WITH SIOUXSIE DICKENS

Siouxsie Dickens has thrown open the doors to her gloriously gothic Victorian villa to give us a glimpse of how she turned it into something special. 

As a fashion stylist, married to a menswear designer, the couple put their home together in the way that they would approach a catwalk show or a magazine shoot - pulling in favours and collaborating with brilliant, creative people.

The couple started with a vision of how it should look - a kind of Gothic period glamour, like the TV show, Penny Dreadful. 

The previous owners had already converted a building of four bedsits into a single home but had to sell up in the middle of adding an extension to the kitchen.

During the viewing, Siouxsie already instinctively knew where the units and appliances would go. Her reference was those upstairs-downstairs, pantry-style kitchens, that are totally in keeping with the period of the house. 

It's an approach the couple took to all of the decorating - to honour the property and its original features in a quirky, individual way.

This house is about more than adding a coat of Down Pipe to the walls and buying a fancy chandelier though. 

It is full of design decisions that in fashion terms, take it from the equivalent of ready-to-wear to a couture creation.  

An example of this is the fire surround in the living room, which appears original, but was specially commissioned by the couple. 

Siouxsie loves to layer textures. In the kitchen the polished-plaster floor is juxtaposed with marble, reclaimed timber worktops, made by Siouxsie's friend, Chris Brandler, and exposed brick and chandeliers in the dining area.

The painted windows add definition.

In the master bedroom, the chimney breast was extended to match the exact width of the super-king size bed and the walls have been distressed and painted to resemble the musty mystique of a flooded château. 

Before they buy anything for the house, Siouxsie's husband, Ben, asks 'is it special enough or 'is it too normal'?'.

Siouxsie wanted the shower room to be dripping wth greenery. Floor-to-ceiling metro tiles and a Victorian-style floor put a period spin in this modern room.

EPISODE 1 - AT HOME WITH DAVID MONEY

Architect, David Money has kindly agreed to show us round and give us the lowdown on how he turned this former Edwardian terrace into this spectacular modern space. 

David Money founded his practice, David Money Architects in 2002. He and his team specialise in creating interest through form, light and the natural beauty of materials, resulting in spaces that uplift and inspire.

The house is in a conservation area, so it would have been difficult to get planning permission for major additions. Instead, David’s aim was to create as much space as possible within the shell of the building. 

By lowering the ground floor by 30cm, adding a skinny 1-metre side return and converting the attic, he’s created an enviable modern home – part luxe loft, part smart townhouse – within the confines of an Edwardian terrace.

The key elements were getting as much natural light into the ground floor as possible. To achieve this, the side return has panels of glazing running its entire length.

At the top of the house, a roof light and a glazed panel in the landing floor pulls daylight through to the lower level. 

Exposed reclaimed brick (from the original structure), concrete and raw plywood feature throughout adding warmth and texture.

The statement cantilevered concrete table serves as a kitchen working area and a sociable space. It can actually fit 16 people round it.

Her Victorian terrace in southeast London is fabulously dramatic, and full of personal touches. But better still, this trove of ethical design – a combination of pre-loved pieces and new buys from ethical brands – is 100 per cent vegan.

One of the challenges of Suszi's double-fronted home is that, although it is wide, it's not very deep. So although from the front, it might appear that she had a lot of space to play with, when you get in, the property is quite tight and compact.

By carefully extending and reconfiguring the layout, Suszi has created a spacious family-friendly home that echoes Abigail's brooding aesthetic.

Suzy began her career under the eye of Tricia Guild, when she joined the creative team at Designers Guild. Following roles in luxury design and as a stylist for several leading interiors magazines, she established her own consultancy in 2000.

Suzy is known for her confident use of colour, her love of craftsmanship and her eclectic touch. She creates tailored, considered rooms that are both fresh and original.
