When choreographing the materials that make up your home, be it through the decor you've meticulously curated or the architecture playing backdrop, how considered are your final choices? The Japanese concept of shizen begs this very question.

It's a lesser-known aspect of Japanese design that I'd argue rounds up to be one of the more important decisions you could make for your home. And in this age of fleeting aesthetics, it sets a real, lasting foundation for your living spaces.

So, I spoke to a Japanese interior designer for authentic advice on what shizen entails and how to bring it into your residence.

What Is Shizen?

"Shizen (自然) is usually translated as nature, and in design writing it tends to get flattened into 'the natural look'," says interior designer Yoko Kloeden. "The closest I can manage in English is naturalness without pretence — a quality of being what you are, without arrangement."

To which, she explains that the opposite of shizen is not exactly synthetic. "It is contrived," Yoko clarifies. "A room can be full of oak and stone and still fail the test, if the materials are there to perform naturalness rather than to do a job. The tea house is the reference point. Japanese decor in the form of tatami, washi paper, bamboo, all chosen for humility rather than effect."

Why Do Materials That Tell a Story Matter?

"To put it simply, shizen matters because real materials mature and imitations wear out. That is the whole distinction, and it is easy to miss, because a good laminate looks convincing in a showroom. And this is part of the problem," she notes.

"Every material is photographed at the one moment it will never look like again — the day it was installed. Nobody markets year three. This produces a contradiction I meet in almost every project. Clients tell me they want a home connected to nature, with natural materials, something that feels alive.

"In the same conversation, they describe wanting every surface to look on the last day exactly as it did on the first. Both wishes are genuine, and they cannot both be met, because a natural material that does not change is a contradiction in terms."

Yoko tells me there's evidence beneath the romance. "Studies in environmental psychology find that natural materials lower cortisol and steady the heart rate, even in laboratory conditions. Our nervous systems recognize them, and that response is not available from something manufactured to resemble them."

And increasingly, people are prioritizing home wellness through concepts like biophilic design and eco-conscious choices in sustainable materials, too.

What Are the Best Materials?

"I do not put natural materials everywhere," Yoko reveals. "I put them where you touch, rest and gather — where the body actually meets the building. Worktops, floors, handrails, the arm of a chair, a bath's surroundings. Elsewhere, a well-chosen painted finish is often the more honest answer."

She mentions that intentionally choosing materials that tell a story is another admirable approach to shizen. "Think oak turned from a fallen tree. Ceramics made from clay dug on a beach. Hand-glazed zellige tiles where no two are quite the same color," she suggests, and I can't help but wonder if the DIY revival will bring about more honest, personal styling in contemporary homes.

"In one house we sanded back the original floorboards and clad a wall in bricks of the same period — the story was already in the building. In another, the objects came with the clients from France and West Africa. None of this is more expensive in any meaningful sense. They simply carry information — where they came from, whose hands shaped them — and a home assembled from objects with histories feels different to live in than one assembled from products."

Normally, I'm one of those people who clings to summer for dear life, not accepting the arrival of autumn until trick-or-treaters are at the door. But, for some reason, this year, I've found myself eagerly anticipating its arrival. A sign of maturity, perhaps; I think I may be becoming a true 'autumn person', and I'm already planning how to design my house accordingly.

It's well known that the colors you use in your home can affect your mood, which is exactly why choosing your kitchen color is such a crucial decision. It's the room you're likely to spend the most time in, so it only makes sense to choose a color that feels true to you. You want a shade that feels welcoming and relaxing, one that puts your mind at ease as soon as you enter a room. And if you happen to be an autumn person, I've found just the colors for you.

Even if you're not a dedicated autumn-lover, it's hard to deny the allure of an autumnal color palette. With all the warm, burnt oranges and sunset tones, as well as deeper, richer shades, it's a palette that works no matter the time of year, and these are the colors our experts say are the best to use in your kitchen.

1. Olive Green

While sage green kitchens may have had their moment, for a more timeless, grown-up take on the look, olive green is the way to go.

Unlike shades like pistachio and sage, olive has a beautiful depth to it, bringing more dimension into your kitchen without weighing it down. It draws on the earthy color palettes typically associated with autumn, but is slightly more neutral than the rest, allowing for a more versatile design.

Its natural warmth and easy elegance make it particularly easy to style too, especially if you opt for a warmer, earthier scheme throughout your design.

As a choice for autumn lovers, interior designer Jordan Ashkenazi notes, "It works particularly well because it pairs so effortlessly with other warm tones such as caramel, taupe, chocolate brown, soft cream, terracotta and antique brass." Sticking within this palette for your design ensures a cohesive feel throughout your kitchen, with warm earthy colors and bronze accents coming together naturally.

2. Terracotta

Warm, rich, and inviting, terracotta is one of the most captivating shades you can use in a kitchen. Evoking the sun-baked clay pots of the Mediterranean, this color tiptoes on the edge of summer and autumn, ideal for those who can't quite choose between the two.

While a red kitchen may sound intimidating at first, the unique undertones of this particular shade make it surprisingly calming. It's a color even the most committed minimalist lovers can get behind.

Take designer Mariam Prada, for example. While she typically opts for a light, neutral color palette, terracotta is an exception. As she says, "Terracotta brings warmth without the harshness of a bright red." The warm shade instead "creates an immediate sense of comfort," especially when paired with rich, textured natural materials and warm metallic finishes.

3. Burnt Orange

No color epitomizes autumn quite like the rusty hues of burnt orange. With earthy undertones of red clay and fallen leaves, this shade is autumn at its best, and it looks just as beautiful on your kitchen cabinets as it does across the treetops.

With years of experience at one of the most beloved paint brands, Helen Shaw is well qualified to offer advice on color choices, and, in her opinion, "a confident red-orange, such as Benjamin Moore's Soft Glow" is a natural choice for an 'autumn person'.

But, for a more complex look, Helen recommends moving away from the color-drenching approach and instead pairing the warm, rusty color with something a tad brighter and fresher. "Introducing a touch of unexpected contrast is a contemporary take on a straightforward color wash concept," explains Helen.

Set to become one of the next hottest kitchen trends, she says, "This season, opting for a moody mid-tone contrasted with a warm-based accent provides a surprise for the eye while maintaining a cossetting feel. Using Soft Glow in a less obvious area, such as the underside of an archway or the transition space between two rooms, is a creative way to tap into this rich and cozy autumnal look."

4. Soft Browns

"For the “Autumn person,” muted cinnamon brown is a great choice," shares interior designer Neha Gupta, adding, "It’s a warm, cozy, and earthy color between shades of brown, rust, and even terracotta."

Brown has had a real moment over the past year, and it's taken over fashion and interiors alike. We're not complaining, though; it's about time this warm, rich shade got the love it deserves, and there's no place better suited to this appetizing shade than the kitchen.

It feels unique in comparison to many other neutral kitchen colors, with Neha noting, "Because it contains a tinge of earthy colors like brown, it doesn’t feel vibrant or saturated, but has enough depth to set it apart from the mild hues usually found in many interior design schemes."

It works particularly well as an accent shade, used to accentuate specific architectural features, or on the lower cabinetry, rather than across the whole room.

5. Burgundy

If there's one color I'd argue more people should be using in this space, it's burgundy. It's a grounded color that designers love for kitchens, and it couldn't be much more perfect for autumn lovers.

It's rich, enveloping, and inviting, creating a cozy warmth that you'll never tire of. When designing spaces for self-described 'autumn people', designer Laura Hammett says, "I love leaning into richer colors for a cozy, cocooning aesthetic. These shades create an enveloping elegance that feels both contemporary and timeless." They may feel intense, especially if you're used to a bright, white kitchen, but that intensity is exactly what makes these designs feel so special.

Sitting somewhere between red and brown, burgundy feels more neutral than a true red shade, making it easier to pair with other kitchen materials and finishes. For Laura, the shade Mulberry from her paint collection is the perfect example. She describes it as "a deeply sophisticated, rich shade of burgundy that exudes warmth and elegance."

In the last couple of years, learning about Feng Shui, the one recurring mistake I've heard many an expert tell me is about the bed facing the door. It's a deeply inauspicious layout that drains your sleep space of valuable harmony.

I'd even go as far as to say it's rule number one of bedroom Feng Shui to ensure your feet don't directly point out the door when you're lying in bed. So, why is this a common warning, and which direction should your bed face?

I spoke to a Feng Shui master to learn about the ideal bed layout and what to do if you can't shift your bed out of what is commonly known as the 'death position'.

Why Shouldn't Your Bed Face the Door?

"I always tell my clients not to place the bed so it's facing the door, because this is known as the death position in Feng Shui," says Rosanna Deflorian, founder of More Than Intuition.

"In funeral wakes, the deceased are placed with their feet towards the door for a very practical and respectful reason — to allow relatives and friends to enter the room, pay homage to the body, and 'watch over' it without having to walk around the head. Plus, this alignment made it easier to carry the coffin out of the room (always feet first) during the funeral procession."

Rosanna explains that Feng Shui takes this ancient tradition and transforms it into a true spatial and energetic law, according to which the bedroom door is the entry point of chi. "So, placing the feet in direct line with the door exposes the sleeper to a straight and swift flow of energy, which can be unsettling," she adds. Hence why this is one of the biggest bedroom Feng Shui mistakes you can make.

Which Direction Should Your Bed Face for Feng Shui?

"The optimal bedroom layout is what we call the 'commanding position'," says Rosanna. "This is where you can see the entrance without being directly in line with it. I recommend arranging the bed diagonally to the door so you have a clear view of the entrance. This gives you a sense of security and control."

Considering other aspects of your bedroom, like bed and window synergy, and keeping a clear route around this space, can further improve the energy. However, correcting the death position should come first.

"Green works beautifully in a bathroom because it’s a color that ages very well," says Marcelina Janiszweska, head of design at Project London. "Brass details in a few well-placed fittings or handles add just the right amount of warmth and polish, which is exactly what gives a green bathroom that timeless and luxurious feel."

It’s a combination that also works incredibly well in every style of bathroom — whether you prefer modern rustic or cool and contemporary. So if you’re inspired to explore green and brass in your next bathroom renovation, here are six bathrooms that embrace the color combination oh so well.

1. Luxe Green and Brass Powder Room

It’s a well-documented design trick that one of the best places to go daring with our decorating choices is in a small space, such as a powder room. And this luxe green-and-brass cloakroom proves the point brilliantly. The bold, slightly heritage mood is classic, yes, but feels spot on for today’s storytelling interiors.

"Smaller spaces are an opportunity to be more expressive, and we wanted the powder room to feel rich and immersive," says Alexii Friedman, founder and lead designer at Studio Friedman. "The saturated green creates depth and intimacy, while the unlacquered brass brings warmth and a sense of history."

Instead of tiles, the designer used embossed vinyl wallpaper with a crocodile leather effect. The green-sheen backdrop is then highlighted with pops of brass on the taps, fittings, and wall lamps. "The combination feels inherently classic, yet still bold. I also love that the brass will continue to patina over time, adding another layer of character to the room," adds Alexii.

2. Pair Green and Brass With Vintage Furniture

Green and brass work incredibly well as a base for layering vintage pieces — and this was exactly the starting point in this bathroom by Elemental Studio.

"The clients are a young couple who love vintage, so the entire house followed that premise," explains Laurence Katz, owner and creative director at Elemental Studio. "The vanity unit is a vintage cabinet adapted for the two basins, and the counter was the old kitchen slate worktop. That way, less was thrown away from the kitchen."

As for choosing green, it’s a color that Laurence always tries to bring into her schemes to help anchor and calm other hues. "For me, green is timeless, and in color psychology, it’s the easier color on the human eye as it’s the color of nature," she adds.

Classic green metro tiles create that timeless silhouette while brass details echo the vintage brass fittings used throughout the rest of the property.

3. Add Drama With Vibrant Green

In this modern bathroom (part of an iconic Art Nouveau apartment block in Malta), vibrant green geometric tiles are offset with brushed brassware — and the result is dramatic.

"The client’s brief was to restore the space to its former Art Nouveau glory, adding a modern, contemporary touch," says James Lentaigne, creative director at Drummonds. "Vibrant green geometric tiles wrap the walls and floor while the brushed brass will develop a patina, in keeping with the historic feel of the building.

"Although the room is relatively compact, the high ceiling, large window, and continuous tiling help to give it a much greater sense of space."

4. A Dark and Moody Jewel-Box Bathroom

We love dark, moody interiors for a cozy, personality-filled space — so a green-and-brass bathroom is the perfect color scheme to take this look throughout the home.

"This bathroom sits downstairs, off a lounge, bar, and home theater, all of which are dark and moody," says Brenda Thompson, owner and creative director of Houselift Design. "We didn’t want the bathroom to break that spell, so we carried the darker palette right through it. Same reasoning behind the black toilet — a white fixture would have pulled focus, and we wanted the mood to hold.

"Once we knew the room was going dark, green was the obvious answer. Many dark colors can get oppressive in a space this size — black closes it in, deep blues go cold, dark reds overstimulate, browns can feel heavy."

Movement and texture were key in a bathroom this dark. So the designer introduced brass fittings for a warm sheen, limewash walls for a cloud-like texture, and glazed tiles that catch the light and throw it back into the space.

"Green is also why the room won’t date,” adds Brenda. “It has staying power because of its connection to nature, and we surrounded it with classic wood, brass, and tile materials that don’t go in and out."

5. Soften With Earthy Neutrals

Green and brass might sound like a super bold choice for the bathroom — and it can be if that’s the look you want. Deep green with warmer antique brass is impactful, for sure. But it’s also a timeless combination that can be stripped back if you want to lean into a gentler bathroom decor.

The simple way to do this is to introduce a range of earthy neutrals, like sand, off-white, buttermilk, and taupe. In this classic bathroom, the mix of eucalyptus wall tiles and brass taps is softened with bands of ivory tiles on the upper half of the walls and natural linen curtains.

And to enhance the timeless yet luxurious mood, black-and-white checkerboard floor tiles introduce a crisp accent. "Rather than being tied to one particular trend, green and brass can be adapted to suit everything from a classic country bathroom to a more contemporary space, which is what makes it such a timeless choice," says Richard Skeoch, director at Hyperion Tiles.

6. Try Pale Green and Brass

The green palette is vast, so there’s a green to suit every bathroom. So if you don’t fancy a deep emerald hue, a chalky sage creates a softer silhouette with brass bathroom detailing.

"What I like is that the green on the walls has not been matched exactly to the floor," says Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra. "Pulling out a softer, chalkier version of the sage gives the room more depth — exact matching can make a bathroom feel slightly showroom-like."

"The brass then becomes a small point of polish rather than another big color statement. There’s enough yellow and warmth in the floor for brass to feel completely at home."

Grounding shades of green are emerging as one of the defining interior trends of the moment — and that includes the bathroom. "Green has enough personality to make an impact, but its natural undertones mean it is unlikely to date quickly," says Abbas Youssefi, founder of Porcelain Superstore. "Richer shades like forest, emerald and deep olive can create a cocooning, luxurious feel, particularly when paired with warm metals, natural wood and layered lighting." As a home wellness writer, I find that most of the homes I explore are designed with calm at their core. However, there's a difference between designing a home entirely around this feeling and interspersing pockets of relaxation to envelop you at the end of the day.

The main problems with a home curated solely to calm include a lack of emotional registers, monotonously neutral palettes, rigid visual perfection, impersonal spaces, and rooms that fall flat. As with most aesthetics, it's about finding the balance between making your home feel calm without compromising dimension.

So if you've chased this style of interiors your whole life, here's why it might be slightly overrated once you catch up.

1. Lack of Emotional Registers

"You might want a bedroom to feel restful, but does your kitchen, dining room, hallway, children's room and sitting room all need to make you feel exactly the same way?" says interior designer Hayley Fellows-Prior.

"Ideally, some rooms should energize you, some should encourage conversation, some can be playful, and some should feel cocooning." Designing each room for a different mood will ultimately make your home feel far more stimulating.

2. Overdoing Neutral Palettes

"Going with an all-neutral palette with no variation or contrast is a big problem with designing homes entirely around calm," says interior designer Jennifer Jones. "All white walls and furniture can feel sterile instead of serene."

Instead, she recommends designing in a range of tones and textures to maintain a warm feel. And if you can't help but favor simple colors, try using minimalist palettes that don't feel one-dimensional.

3. Visual Perfection Leaves No Room for Relaxation

"If everything has to remain perfectly styled, concealed, and clutter-free, you can end up creating a home you're frightened to actually live in," says Hayley. "A genuinely comfortable home should tolerate the chaos that a Tuesday morning can bring, everyone trying to rush out of the door at once and coffee mugs piled in the sink!"

For this problem, I prescribe the Japanese art of fukinsei, or the charming concept of wabi-sabi. It'll help you embrace asymmetry and imperfection for a home that feels more livable.

4. You're Left with Impersonal Spaces

"Typically, I find that a calm home can simply feel boring," Jennifer points out. "There's no interesting artwork, color, or unique patterns that lend a home soul and personality."

And if all you're being fed by your calm-coded algorithm is beige homes, then this is your sign to snap out of your feed and avoid copycat interiors. Instead, take a moment to get your taste back. I have a feeling your house will feel more like a home before you know it.

5. No Contrast Equals a Flat Aesthetic

"One of the problems with designing entirely around calm is that everything can end up speaking at the same volume. If the furniture, artwork, lighting, color and accessories are all deliberately quiet, there's nothing for the eye to land on and a room can feel surprisingly flat," says Hayley.

"Calm doesn't have to mean removing contrast. Often it's one stronger element, whether that's an oversized artwork, a deeper color, or an unusual piece of furniture, that gives all of the quieter elements around it a reason to exist."

My favorite way to introduce a spoonful of visual interest is through the unexpected red theory, mismatched dining chairs, and color capping. Sometimes, all you need is a single element of surprise to breathe life into a room.

The secret to longevity often comes down to the jobs we’re less likely to discuss, and they’re easily overlooked.

I’m talking about grout lines, tending to chips and scratches in kitchen countertops, and even keeping those moisture-prone areas in check. We’ve spoken to the experts to uncover the maintenance jobs that are really worth adding to your to-do list, from the small fixes that keep everything running smoothly to the simple steps that can protect materials you’ve invested in for years to come.

So whether your kitchen is brand new or just a few years old, these easy-to-miss details will help your space stay looking (and working) as good as it did when it was first installed.

1. Grout and Sealant Care

Much like bathrooms, kitchens are a victim of discolored grout, especially behind areas like the hob. Unfortunately, this is a job that requires time and patience. “To rake out grout lines is arduous and can be a little stressful as you'll need to ensure you don't chip the tiles,” Chris Carroll, founder and director of All In One Design and Build Studio, says.

He suggests using a good diamond cutting tool for a quicker and cleaner removal. “If the affected area is solely behind the hob, a quicker solution would be to source a solid splashback that works with your kitchen and tiles for an easier wipeable surface.”

Mastic also has a habit of discoloring or lifting from the worktop. This can lead to further issues of water permeating into timber worktops or even behind the carcasses, leading to further problems. “Resealing internal corners to all parts of the kitchen will give a quick look of a sharply maintained space and the peace of mind of water management,” recommends Chris.

It’s also worth checking seals around sinks and taps at least once a year. Sam Harris, senior design consultant at Ashford Kitchens & Interiors, agrees, “They don't last forever, and replacing aging sealant before it fails is one of the cheapest ways to avoid water damage inside cabinets.”

2. Cabinetry Wear and Tear

"The maintenance job most homeowners forget is simply paying attention to moisture,” says Sam Harris. While a little steam is inevitable in a busy kitchen, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on where it settles. “Repeatedly leaving condensation to settle on cabinet doors, especially around kettles, coffee machines and dishwashers, can gradually affect painted finishes and timber over time.” Wipe away excess moisture whenever you can, particularly around the harder-working areas.

Of course, even the best-kept kitchen cabinetry will eventually show signs of everyday wear and tear. The good news is that, unlike countertops, wooden cabinetry has the advantage of being able to be refreshed rather than replaced. Chris advises repainting as a simple way to give tired cabinetry a new lease of life.

“There are numerous paint companies to choose from for a product to suit kitchen doors and drawers, but not all carry the guarantee that they will not chip easily,” he explains. "Whether you opt for an oil-based paint or water-based paint, the key is to allow plenty of time for it not only to dry, but they must be left to cure.”

An easy step to underestimate, but he assures us this is the most important part to take into consideration. Often, the better products can take up to two weeks to fully cure and harden, which means you either keep the fascias off in a safe place or use them very carefully. Get this part right, and “Once the curing process is complete, your door fronts will have a new lease of life for a fraction of the cost of replacing them.”

3. Countertop Maintenance

It’s not easy to be precious about your countertops, but when you invest in something special, you want them to last as long as possible in their best condition. Chris explains how stone worktops are so versatile: "They look great, they’re hard-wearing, and they’re often in keeping with the period of the house, or can be used to create a traditional look in a modern build." However, they are still susceptible to chips, stains, and scratches, but he reassures that a good stone mason could bring them back with some attention.

When it comes to solid wood countertops, they vary in tones and grains, can be highly lacquered for protection in either a gloss or a matte finish, and can have under- or over-mount sinks. Much like stone, small chips in a timber countertop can be repaired easily. “Timber is one of the better timeless materials to use on a property,” says Chris. “ A common misconception is that they need to be resealed every six months, but this only applies to oiled worktops. A lacquered worktop does not need resealing when done right the first time.”

4. Limescale Build-Up

Often, especially in hard water areas, kitchen taps can suffer from a high level of limescale. If this occurs, Chris recommends replacing the tap: “It’s the quickest way to give your kitchen a little facelift,” plus they require the same universal hole cutout in sinks and worktops.

“There are hundreds to choose from, and the satisfaction of a free-flowing tap without limescale build-up or stiff glands is a really simple pleasure.”

5. Aging Hardware and Discontinued Details

In most cases, quality cabinetry handles and knobs will last for years, yet if you’re at the stage where these elements are damaged or simply aren’t relishing in their natural patina, they may just need replacing. The problem lies in the situation where the exact design and finish you originally chose has been discontinued.

Replacing the current design with a new and updated look is a great way to quickly style up the look of a kitchen without replacing door and drawer fronts, but the problem lies in the positioning of the fixing holes. “The chance of finding a handle with the exact hole centers is almost impossible. There are options of handles with a back plate which would cover the holes externally, but this would be down to taste and preference,” explains Chris.

However, with a newly painted door, you can simply fill the holes, sand, and paint to a flush finish. Now you can choose any handle or knob to go in the original spot, or a newly-placed location, and voilà!

People often think kitchen maintenance means buying specialist products, but in many cases it's simply about spotting small issues before they become expensive ones. Sam advises, at the very least, spending ten minutes every few months checking hinges, seals, and other details around the kitchen, including those hidden or in less obvious areas.

It might not be the most exciting item on your to-do list, but a little regular upkeep can go a surprisingly long way. Catch a loose handle, a tired seal, or a tiny chip early, and you could save hundreds, if not thousands, in repairs later down the line. After all, the kitchen is probably one of the biggest investments in a home, so giving it some attention now is much easier than having to replace the whole thing a short while after.

There are also some design mistakes that can make your kitchen harder to clean, which experts recommend avoiding when designing a low-maintenance kitchen.

Whatever your style or taste, 'quiet luxury' hasn't gone away. The concept is actually foundational if you want your home to feel as beautiful as it looks. It sits in the small details. It's ultimately craftsmanship, quality materials, and the subtle signals of sophistication you can't quite put your finger on, rather than brash logos and flashy fittings.

Of course, these small details often come with a high price tag. However, quiet luxury can also be achieved through minor home renovations. These changes can be incorporated whether you're doing a major kitchen extension, a bathroom refurb, or simply upgrading a room.

These are the minor renovations that interior designers suggest to create a home that feels more 'quietly luxurious'.

1. Expanded Doorways

A home with elegant proportions is a home that exudes 'quiet luxury'. Depending on the size, scale, and style of the property, increasing the height or width of some doorways can help a home flow better — and feel more impressive.

"In key living or entertaining spaces, a wider opening or a pair of double doors can create a wonderful sense of generosity and connection between rooms, particularly where the doors are likely to remain open much of the time," says London-based interior designer, Clare Gaskin.

"Equally, where there's a narrow doorway, increasing the width by even a small amount makes entering and moving through the room feel noticeably better."

Increasing the height of internal doors can completely change the proportions of a space and give rooms a much grander feeling too.

"Proportion is key though," says Clare. "You need to consider how the new height interacts with architectural details such as cornices and picture rails. Leaving an awkwardly small amount of wall between the door and the ceiling would have the opposite effect."

Dallas-based interior designer Philip Thomas Vanderford, founder of Studio Thomas James, is also a fan of making these minor adaptations to doorways, when suitable.

"It creates an interior with better rhythm and a stronger architectural relationship between rooms," says Philip. "Many homes feel constrained, not because the rooms are too small, but because the openings between them are poorly proportioned.

"Widening a doorway or increasing the height of an interior opening can be transformative. This small design move offers big impact for the overall flow and visual composition."

Larger openings to rooms can improve sightlines, allow natural light to travel farther through the house, and create more gracious transitions from one space to another.

"The luxury comes from proportion," says Philip. "People may not immediately identify that the opening has been altered, but they will feel that the house is calmer, taller, and more considered."

2. Flush Floor Transitions

Good quality flooring that stretches seamlessly between rooms is often a marker of quiet luxury, as it can subtly make a space feel larger and more connected. However, while that's the case, it isn't necessary to have the same flooring in every room to create a premium feel. Flush floor thresholds can achieve a subtly sophisticated vibe too.

"Wherever construction allows, I prefer floor materials to meet as cleanly and quietly as possible," says Philip. "Raised thresholds, abrupt changes in flooring, and poorly detailed transition strips visually divide a home into smaller pieces.

"A flush transition creates continuity, while allowing different rooms to retain appropriate materials. For example, wood can meet stone without an unnecessary metal strip or prominent raised saddle interrupting the line of the floor.

"The home feels more expansive, and the workmanship appears more precise," he says. "This minor fix also allows the architecture to read as a continuous composition rather than a series of disconnected renovations."

Clare also treats thresholds between internal doors as a small detail that can make a home feel more considered. "Wherever two different floor finishes meet — perhaps timber and carpet, or stone and timber — there is an opportunity to think about that junction, rather than automatically using a standard metal door bar," says Clare.

"Sometimes our approach is to make the threshold disappear as much as possible, perhaps specifying a very slim profile in a premium finish such as antique bronze that relates to other finishes within the home.

"In other situations, we'll celebrate the transition, increasing the size of the threshold and introducing timber or even a contrasting material such as marble. These beautifully resolved junctions are part of what makes an interior feel quietly luxurious.

"People might not consciously notice every threshold as they walk through a house, but collectively these considered details make the whole interior feel better finished."

3. Upgraded Grout

Tile grouting is a practical detail that has had a stylish upgrade in the last decade or so. There are multitudes of tile and grout color combinations. Chosen well, a complementary or contrasting tone to your tiles can imbue your bathroom with subtle sophistication.

"Bright white grout is not always the best choice," says London-based interior designer Manuela Hamilford, founder of Hamilford Design. "A warmer stone, putty, or soft gray often sits much better with the tile (depending on its color), and makes the whole surface feel more considered.

"It is also worth replacing tired silicone at the same time and matching the tone where possible."

4. Hidden Curtain Tracks

It's no secret that beautifully lined, custom-made drapes are an integral decorative detail in a quality interior scheme. However, designers agree that how the curtains hang is just as important as quality fabrics and workmanship.

This is where a minor renovation can make a big difference in giving a room an elegant edge (even with 'off-the-shelf' curtains).

"Recessing the curtain track into the ceiling or concealing it behind the cornice or a simple pelmet is a must for us in our projects," says Manuela. "The curtains appear to fall straight from the ceiling, which makes the window feel taller and removes any visible fittings.

Of course, the curtain length needs to sit right too. "Curtains can sit just above the floor, lightly touch it, or puddle. Any of these can work, but the length needs to look deliberate," says Manuela.

"When curtains finish an inch or two too high, they simply look as though they have shrunk. Getting them right immediately makes the window and the room feel more polished."

5. Concealed Cables and Tech

Trailing cables from lamps, routers, screens, speakers, and other tech make a room look messy. Even the countless cordless models on offer need to be recharged regularly, creating clutter. By organizing your tech and concealing cables, chargers, and other functional items, interior designers can reduce visual noise and make a room feel calmer and more sumptuous.

"Quiet luxury is often defined by what has been removed from view," says Philip. "We routinely look for ways to conceal television cables, speakers, window-treatment hardware, outlets, charging equipment, HVAC grilles, and other functional necessities.

"That might involve adding recessed curtain pockets, relocating outlets into cabinetry, integrating charging drawers, using discreet flush grilles, or creating millwork that absorbs technology without calling attention to itself."

Philip explains that the objective is not to create a sterile room. It is to eliminate visual interruptions, so that the architecture, materials, artwork, and furniture can hold the attention.

"When the functional elements are carefully integrated, a house feels calmer and considerably more refined," says Philip.

Quiet luxury is as much about comfort as it is about quality and craftsmanship. These minor renovations can not only increase the richness of your living space, but some can also improve how you move through it and use it. It's these barely noticeable elements that elevate your experience and make your home feel 'quietly luxurious'.

"Repeatedly losing plants in your home may be indicative of a difficulty in completing smaller, repetitive tasks, where no significant consequences exist if these are delayed," says licensed psychologist Dr. Shannon Franklin.

"Since watering plants can easily be put off, since nothing alarming occurs as a result of missing one single watering session, the same type of patterns often develop regarding items such as responding to emails, cleaning up, etc."

Shannon explains that we are psychologically inclined to focus on what is urgent, rewarding, or noticeable. "The delayed response from plant care makes it easy for it to fall under the radar of awareness until the leaves start to wilt or turn brown," she adds.

"This does not suggest that someone has no accountability regarding their responsibility." It simply requires some rewiring of your routine and the way you plan your tasks at home to break the cycle.

How Can You Fix This Habit?

If you identify as being more Type B, a great place to start would be to take a more active approach to caring for your houseplants. However, since this can be a distinct change for some, conducting a houseplant audit and adopting low-maintenance indoor plants is a strategic way to set yourself up for success.

There's no denying it: the colors you use can define your space. And in rooms where so much of the design is ruled by practicality, like the kitchen, this becomes all the more important. Do you want to play it safe and opt for a classic combo, or will you try something new and defy conventions with something a little more original?

It's a big decision to make, and even if the rest of your design has been crafted to perfection, the wrong kitchen color can leave the whole space feeling off. Go too bold, and you run the risk of a kitchen that feels overwhelming. But, equally, if you go the other direction and choose a completely neutral color scheme, your space can quickly lose all dimension, appearing flat and, dare I say it, boring. The trick is finding something in the middle, a combo that finds a balance between playful and timeless, and of course, knowing the combinations to avoid doesn't hurt, either.

Which is exactly why I took the time to turn to the experts and ask them the color combinations they would suggest avoiding at all costs. As well as what they recommend doing instead, so you can know exactly what works and what doesn't.

1. Green and Red

Today, people are increasingly moving towards more experimental, colorful kitchen designs, with butter yellows and cheerful blues dominating our feeds. But, according to the experts, brighter isn't always better, and it's easy for this trend to cross over from stylish to overwhelming.

While one bright pop of color can certainly bring a surge of life into your kitchen, Annie Burrows, lead designer at luxury kitchen brand Blakes London, believes that you're always better off limiting yourself to just one statement color. "We always advocate choosing colors that you genuinely love and making the kitchen feel personal, but we tend to avoid combining two or more very strong colours, such as yellow and purple or green and red," she says. One bright shade can bring interest and contrast into your space, adding dimension and depth, but when you begin to layer various contrasting colors, they can start to fight for attention, creating an almost suffocating effect.

They also carry less cozy, welcoming connotations than you may want in your home. Annie notes that these bright combinations can feel more reminiscent of brand colors, "giving the kitchen a more corporate feel."

Similarly, particular color combinations can have very strong visual associations that can be hard to overcome. This is particularly prevalent with the green and red colorways, which Annie aptly notes "can quickly veer towards a Christmas palette." Although these two colors may look gorgeous separately, when used together, it can be hard to overcome the Christmas connotations, which, while fun in December, are likely not what you want for your kitchen all year round.

"A kitchen is often one of the most hardworking and sociable rooms in the house, so we prefer color schemes that feel considered and enduring rather than overly stimulating," explains Annie. It's also important to consider how the colors you choose will affect your home's sellability. Generally, neutral kitchen colors are a safer bet for those thinking of putting their house on the market, as they are more likely to appeal to a wider pool of buyers.

2. Black and White

While two bright colors can be too much of a risk, playing it safe can often be just as bad a move.

Although it's long been thought of as a classic, Jayne Everett, the creative director of Naked Kitchens, shares: "The traditional, high-contrast black-and-white combination is one we generally steer clear of in our bespoke designs."

Fans of minimalist kitchen designs might lean towards this combo in the hope that it will offer a sleek finish, with a clean, modern effect. But, in reality, the result can be harsher than expected. As Jayne points out, "Black and white is undeniably modern, but it often lacks soul." And in the kitchen, which is meant to be the heart of the home, a lack of soul can be hard to come back from. It's one of those things that makes a kitchen feel unwelcoming, no matter what you do.

"We love combining warmer colors, which really enhance the warmth and create an inviting kitchen design," says Jayne. You can still use these neutral shades; just try pairing them with some softer, warmer tones to counteract the harshness. For example, Jayne suggests, "Combine black kitchen cabinetry with warm, earthy off-whites rather than a sharp, brilliant white. This softens the edges and makes the space feel luxurious rather than graphic." The materials you use will make a difference too. The natural, textural warmth of a wood kitchen can never feel cold and is an easy way to warm up an otherwise monochromatic design.

3. Navy and Black

Emerging as a rejection of the bright white kitchens of the 2000's, in recent years, we've seen a growing trend for deep, moody kitchens, with intensely dark color palettes. But before you commit to the look, it may be best to give it some deliberation first.

"Think twice before pairing two dark shades, such as blue and black," warns Tamsin Holland, a kitchen design expert at Paula Rosa Kitchens. Through her years of experience, Tamsin knows just how alluring these darker shades can be, and how effective they can look when used correctly.

The dark intensity of navy blues and blacks can lend a dramatic, striking beauty to your kitchen. However, it's all too easy to be heavy-handed with these darker shades, leaving your kitchen feeling oppressively dark and heavy, and instead of the desired 'quietly dramatic' kitchen you were going for, you'll be left with an eerie, cavernous space.

"Darker colors can work well in kitchens if they’re used with restraint and intention," explains Tamsin. When used sparingly and with careful consideration, a dark blue or inky blank can bring depth to a room, providing a welcome contrast to other, light colors. The trick lies in finding the balance between the two.

Our homes are reflections of ourselves — an expression of not just our style, but our priorities, routines, and desires. And no place is this clearer than in the kitchen.

It would only make sense, then, that every kitchen would look a little different, shaped by the person living within it. However, within the current trend economy, we've become so used to seeing recycled versions of the same design over and over again. It's as if there's only one way to design a modern kitchen nowadays, leaving no room for individuality. We're so used to seeing a certain vision of what a kitchen should look like that it's become difficult to distinguish what you actually like and what you're just used to seeing.

Not everyone is plagued by this issue, though. No, for designers who spend every day carefully crafting kitchens that perfectly reflect their clients' needs, adjusting the designs to meet their unique preferences, it becomes a lot easier to pick out the features that appeal to them and the ones that don't. So I asked the designers exactly what design features they would never be caught including in their own kitchens, and their answers were not what I expected.

1. Raised Microwave Storage

"Upper cabinet microwaves are a kitchen eyesore, and I would never design a kitchen with one," says Damian Samora, from Ferguson & Shamamian Architects. Proper storage of kitchen appliances is the key to a tidy, uncluttered kitchen. A well-placed appliance garage, or cabinet, can keep your kitchen worktops free, providing you with more much-needed prep area.

However, not all kitchen storage solutions are created equal, and while some are the backbone of a functional, organized design, others can have the opposite effect, and this is exactly what you'll find with a raised cabinet microwave. "There is simply no functional or aesthetic occasion where you should stare at a black window and have children reaching above their heads for scalding hot bowls of anything," argues Damian.

You may think keeping your microwave stored above your countertops will help to make your kitchen more streamlined, removing the need for a bulky box sitting on your counters, but not only does a raised microwave look ugly, it actually introduces more risk into your space, especially if you have young children.

2. Fluted Cabinets

Fluted wood kitchen cabinetry has been one of the standout kitchen trends of the past few years, popping up in almost every chic, modern design. But for Isabella Pacelli, a designer at London's trend-setting kitchen design brand, Roundhouse, this is a style she'd avoid using in her own home.

While it's undeniably beautiful, there are a few practical issues that would keep Isabella from featuring this kitchen cabinet style in her own kitchen. As she explains, "It is difficult to clean due to the ridges, and in a painted finish it is prone to chipping on the scalloped edges, unfortunately."

Your kitchen cabinets form one of the crucial elements of your design, and over the years, they'll likely be subjected to plenty of wear and tear, so choosing a low-maintenance kitchen material for this feature is undoubtedly the smarter option.

3. Built-In Coffee Machines

There's a certain belief that when it comes to designing a luxury kitchen, you should always choose built-in appliances over freestanding ones. But according to Amy Peltier from Peltier Interiors, the truth is a little more nuanced.

While a concealed fridge will always look chic, there are some other appliances that aren't quite so beneficial to have installed as a permanent fixture in your kitchen. Namely, the coffee machine. "I would never install a built-in coffee maker," states Amy.

Not only is this a far more expensive option than a regular espresso machine or coffee maker, Amy shares that the results are often less than desirable: "Over the years, feedback from clients who have had them in their homes has been less than ideal," she shares, adding, "They require regular cleaning and servicing, which can be cumbersome, and there are only a handful of really good options on the market."

With so many fantastic coffee machines on the market now, you'll find far better results sticking with a countertop machine. And, if you're really after the minimalist kitchen look, Amy says, "For clients who don’t want one sitting out, we’ve even concealed them inside cabinetry on an appliance lift. This keeps the coffee maker hidden on a daily basis while still making it easily accessible and, importantly, not permanently built in."

4. Oversized Islands

"One thing I would never include in my own kitchen is an oversized island simply for the sake of having one," shares interior designer Maureen Gomez, whose London-based studio specializes in elegant designs that bring contemporary touches to period properties.

So often with kitchen islands, people follow the logic of 'the bigger, the better', but, according to Maureen, this is often to the detriment of the overall flow and feel of the space. This is especially prominent in small kitchens, where an island is often just about squeezed in, and ends up taking over the entire space, leaving the room looking cramped and awkward.

Even worse still, Maureen says, "Don't even get me started on the hideous trend of installing two islands. I would always favor a smaller, beautifully proportioned island, or no island at all, over one that interrupts the natural flow of the space."

It's not just the size of your island that can be an issue; Maureen also draws attention to the often problematic placement of sinks and hobs on kitchen islands. As she explains, "An island is often the social heart of the room, so I prefer to keep it free from extractor fans, pans, cooking splashes and lingering heat." Similarly, a kitchen sink invites clutter onto your counters, often leaving your island covered in dirty dishes and drying racks.

5. Recirculated Extractors

The benefit of working in kitchen design is that you're granted a first-hand view of what works and what doesn't. While the rest of us have to live with it to find out, for the designers, every new project offers a learning opportunity, and they have the time and experience to filter through what is just a trend and what should become a modern essential.

And, unfortunately, as Matthew Andrews, head of design at bespoke kitchen and joinery specialists, Co Domi, found out, the sleek, recirculating extractor hood fans fit firmly in the former category. "On paper it looks like the easier option — no ductwork, simpler install — but it never really removes the grease or odors," explains Matthews.

Though it may seem like the easier, faster option, in the long run, it can end up dragging down your kitchen as a whole. "In a kitchen where every material and finish has been chosen with intention, that's a false economy as it compromises air quality, shortens the life of cabinetry and worktops, and the filters need replacing far more often than people realize," says Matthew, adding, "If ducted extraction genuinely isn't possible, I'd redesign the layout around one that is, rather than compromise on it."

6. Banquette Seating

While, for the most part, the designers draw on practical noticings in their decision-making, there are other cases in which it simply comes down to personal preference.

This was the case for Alexis Ryder, from Robert A.M Stern Architects. "I would skip a banquette in my own kitchen," she tells me.

This is not because there is anything fundamentally wrong with an island with built-in seating or banquette dining in the kitchen; it's just that this style wouldn't align with Alexis' lifestyle.

As she explains, "I love to cook, and the kitchen is the soul and main zone of my home, so I want it to accommodate real life, not dictate it." Built-in seating can be a great solution for squeezing seating into small kitchens; however, for more social spaces, they can feel a little restrictive. Instead, Alexis says, "Give me fun chairs I can pull together for a crowd, move around for a conversation, or clear out entirely when dinner turns into cocktails. Fixed seating has its place; I just don’t want it fixing the way I live."

To design a kitchen like a pro, you need to plan it like a pro and avoid common kitchen planning mistakes from the start — 'fail to prepare, prepare to fail' is the key mantra here.

Spotlights are often a contentious topic among designers. Twenty years ago, they were absolutely everywhere; recessed ceiling spotlights became the hallmark of a minimalist, modern home. Fast-forward to the present day, and they've earned a reputation for being flat, lackluster, and utilitarian, lacking the dimension and visual interest of more traditional fixtures.

And yet, they shouldn't be cast aside for good. Spotlights actually have the ability to elevate your home's lighting scheme in powerful ways. From highlighting architectural details to washing walls — you just need to know how to use them. If you're planning the perfect lighting scheme for your home, they should certainly be on the roster.

A quick distinction is necessary, however. When lighting designers refer to spotlights, they're usually referring to recessed bulbs installed flush in the ceiling. You may, however, have also heard them referred to as 'downlights'. While sometimes used interchangeably, downlights actually refer to fixtures where the bulb has a fixed direction — usually downwards, as the name suggests. They can be recessed with flush fittings or fixed on a mount.

Spotlights, on the other hand, refer to directional lights, specifically. These can also be recessed, but in this instance the bulb can be adjusted on mechanical pivots. They may also come on a track rail or mount, but the distinguishing characteristic is that they can be repositioned as desired. A spotlight, then, can act as a downlight, but not the other way round. So, ready for a lighting upgrade? Here are four ways to use spotlights to elevate your scheme.

1. As an Accent to Artwork

Similar to picture lights, spotlights offer a pool of centered light that can draw attention to a specific place on the wall. For this reason, they make a great way to light art in the home, turning your living room or hallway into its own high-end gallery.

According to lighting designer Samantha Coles, tiltable spotlights are the perfect alternative to traditional picture lights, which can often look dated or distinctly traditional. "They light artwork discreetly and without the distraction of a picture light," she says. "A further benefit of using spotlights is it’s much easier to light large pieces evenly. A large piece of art needs a very long picture light, or only the central strip is lit." Two or three spotlights evenly spread out, however, can work far more effectively.

Being adjustable, spotlights also offer greater flexibility when highlighting artwork, but that's not all. "Interchangeable optics and commissioning lenses allow for intricate adjustments to the lit effect, ensuring the best outcomes," explains Luke Thomas, design director of John Cullen Lighting. In other words, the lenses can be easily swapped out to fine-tune the spread and intensity of the light, giving you greater control over the final effect. "This allows adjustment through beam angle increments from a super concentrated 8 degrees to a wide and diffused 51 degrees." The effect? Professional-worthy illumination that brings your art to life.

2. To Add Interest to Walls

One way to prevent spotlights from feeling flat is by using them to wash the walls. By strategically placing them around the perimeter of the ceiling, they illuminate your walls, adding depth and dimension to your space.

Known as wall-wash lighting, this is a great way to highlight entire walls, rather than target specific areas. But you have to use the right type of light to achieve the look. "A wall washing light uses a specialist optic in front of the LED engine to spread and flatten the lighting effect," says Luke. "With the correct setting out, these wall washers can be used to create a completely even lighting effect; wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor."

You can also use spotlights to accentuate texture on a wall. "If positioned close to a wall, they will skim over that surface," explains Luke. "If you apply a textured finish to the wall, the skimming effect will accentuate the depth of the material and create an incredible, dramatic feature."

For the best effect, Luke says lights should be set within 100mm of the wall. "Using smaller lights closer together is better than larger lights further apart," he adds.

3. To Zone Distinct Areas Within a Room

Certain areas of a room deserve more light than others. Not only is this a practical way of adding task lighting to, say, a seating area or a shower, but it can also draw the eye to a visual focal point and create a more layered lighting scheme.

Luke suggests using spotlights set directly above furniture to create a central focus and zoning. "In an open-plan living space, this would involve lights over a coffee table in the center of a seating area, lights over the dining table, and further lights over the kitchen island," he says. "This defines the center point of three zones upon which other lighting layers are applied."

Samantha finds spotlights especially useful for dining tables, allowing for adaptability when entertaining larger groups. "You may have a decorative pendant over the center of the table, which is fine for everyday use, but it just won’t light the ends of the table properly when it’s extended," she explains. "A spotlight set to cover each end of the table when it’s extended means everyone can see to eat." She recommends putting these table end spotlights on their own circuit so they're only switched on when needed.

But you need to be wary here. When zoning specific areas in this way, Luke warns against over-lighting with grids of spotlights. "They produce a flat blanket of light," he says, noting that the contrast between light and shadow is important.

4. To Highlight Architectural Features

From alcoves and fireplaces to pillars and beams, spotlights are a great way to highlight points of visual interest in a room. The reason behind this is simple. "Our focus is naturally drawn towards the brighter places in a room," says Sam. If your home has worthy conversation points, give them the illumination they deserve.

These details don't necessarily need to be architectural, either. Think about other unexpected spots to put lighting that deserve attention. "Spotlights can be used to highlight other features added to rooms, such as beautiful window treatments, a vase of flowers or a bowl on a table, indoor planters, or sculpture," says Sam.

She notes that these spotlights will work most effectively if they're put on separate circuits, however. "They won’t highlight anywhere near as effectively if they are just part of the overall ambient room lighting."

How to Avoid Using Spotlights in Your Home

You might have picked up on a common thread throughout this article, and that's designers' disdain for a grid-like formation of spotlights used purely as ambient lighting.

Sam says that this layout results in a feeling of "blandness". "Evenly spaced rows or grids may make a ceiling look neat and ordered, but it often means the spotlights aren’t where they are needed," she notes. "This arrangement can have the second equally awful effect of evenly lighting a room."

"This can be useful in some rooms such as utility rooms, workshops, or craft rooms, but for any room where focal points, character, and atmosphere are wanted, a variety of lighting levels is needed," she adds.

If you've been wondering if we've evolved beyond spotlights, the answer is yes. That doesn't mean we've left them behind completely, though. Instead of relying on rows of recessed spotlights as the main light source in a room, we're finally waking up to the power they hold in creating an elevated lighting scheme — something designers have been doing for decades.

If green is the color you repeatedly return to, it may suggest you're creating a home that restores what modern life constantly asks you to give.

Unlike colors that naturally stimulate or demand our attention, most of the greens we choose for our homes ask very little of us. The human eye can distinguish more variations of green than any other color. That gives us enormous freedom to choose the greens that support both the experience we want to create and the way we want to feel and behave in each space.

Growing up in humid South Carolina summers, then living through three rounds of heatwaves this year in London without AC, it's safe to say I know what hot feels like. But feeling hot while trying to relax in your home? Going to sleep in your beautifully curated bedding while sweating? It's not ideal, to say the least. So how do you design a home that stays cool throughout the hottest temperatures? Well, it typically starts with clever building features and proper planning. So I asked an architecture and design expert to share her secrets.

"Many older homes, particularly in places that have traditionally had milder summers, simply weren't designed to cope with prolonged periods of heat," Australian-based, award-winning architect and designer Georgina Wilson explains to me. Sure, different countries have different design tricks that keep homes cool, but it's not always obvious which tips and tricks might be best for your home. "As temperatures continue to rise, there are several architectural upgrades that can make a noticeable difference to comfort without relying solely on air conditioning," adds Georgina. The more resourceful, the more effective.

So rather than just giving you a few quick things to buy before a heatwave, below are several ideas to incorporate into the actual design of your home to help reduce heat from the beginning of the building process. From window placement to proper shading and AC, here's what you need to know.

1. Create Opportunities for Cross Ventilation

First and foremost, "Cross-ventilation is one of the simplest and most effective passive cooling strategies," says Georgina Wilson. Cross-ventilation is basically the idea of positioning windows and doors across from each other, both in a room and throughout the entire house. "If your floor plan allows, creating openings on opposite sides of the home encourages natural airflow, helping to flush out warm air and draw in cooler breezes."

And this isn't necessarily something that happens solely during construction (although planning heatproof house extensions certainly does help). As Georgina explains, "Even relatively small changes to the layout or window configuration can dramatically improve comfort." Maybe you have a large piece of furniture that is blocking airflow; rearranging your layout can help maximize this kind of cooling airflow.

2. Invest in External Shading and Insulation

Before you can manage a regulated indoor temperature, you have to make sure that your exterior is up to par. Are you doing everything you can to stop the hot weather from raising the temperature inside your home from the outside?

Georgina says, "Stopping heat before it reaches the glass is far more effective than trying to cool a room after it's already heated up. External shutters, operable louvres and well-designed awnings can significantly reduce solar heat gain while still allowing natural light and ventilation." Fortunately, patio awnings and sun sails prove that even functional design can be stylish. And if you're starting from scratch or embarking on a renovation project, brise soleil is another incredibly stylish option.

And don't forget things like exterior paint colors and architectural elements. Lighter colors reflect light and darker ones absorb it. While this might not immediately affect your indoor temperature, if ventilation is poor, then the heat a dark exterior generates will affect indoor temperature, too.

Plus, "The roof is one of the largest sources of heat gain in a home. Upgrading insulation is often one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make, helping to keep interiors cooler during summer while also improving energy efficiency year-round," adds Georgina.

3. Plan Windows Thoughtfully

Windows are also going to be a huge factor in managing heat entering and exiting your home. So, if you are dealing with too much heat, taking measures to heat-proof your windows is a great place to start when building.

To that, Georgina says, "Replacing standard glazing with high-performance glass can substantially reduce unwanted heat entering the home. Combined with well-designed shading, it helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures without sacrificing daylight or views." Obviously, replacing windows is hard once the home is fully built, but there are plenty of window furnishings that you can apply after the fact that will help — things like blackout curtains and lining, Roman blinds, and even glazes can help deter heat post-build.

And as beautiful as skylights are, they are a tricky inclusion — proper planning is necessary. Georgina says, "Skylights can bring beautiful natural light into a home, but they also introduce significant heat if they're not carefully considered. Where skylights are appropriate, I recommend limiting their number, specifying high-performance glazing, and incorporating external shading or automated blinds."

4. Air Conditioning Should Be Thoughtfully Integrated

Air conditioning is a great element to include, and still one of the fastest, easiest ways to cool down a space. But if you are going to include aircon the Livingetc way (read: design-forward and probably hidden), then thoughtful appliance integration is necessary.

As Georgina explains, "Air conditioning is becoming increasingly necessary in many climates, but it's most effective when it's considered as part of the overall design." You want to feel it, without having to look at a clunky appliance. And, "The placement of units should prioritize the spaces people use most, particularly living areas and bedrooms, while complementing passive cooling measures rather than replacing them."

How to Cool Your House as a Renter

"Renters often have fewer options when it comes to making permanent changes, but there are still several ways to improve comfort during hot weather," says Georgina. I get it, I am a renter myself, and building a functional and stylish space is always at the top of the list.

So, first and foremost, if you're moving to a really hot climate, you want to think about the position of your apartment before you sign any leases. "If you're choosing between properties, I'd generally avoid top-floor apartments in older buildings where the roof is poorly insulated. Apartments on lower levels often benefit from the insulation provided by neighboring homes above, making them noticeably cooler during summer," explains Georgina.

Same with the orientation of a home. "West-facing rooms receive intense afternoon sun, while east-facing bedrooms can become uncomfortably warm early in the morning," says Georgina. Understanding how the sun moves across a property can make a significant difference to day-to-day liveability.

However, if you find yourself in a space that struggles with either of the above, you can still try to control sunlight before it heats the room. Window furnishings that keep heat out are one of the easiest upgrades renters can make. Georgina says, "Well-fitted blinds or curtains can help reduce heat gain during the hottest parts of the day while still allowing flexibility with light and privacy."

And if all is lost, get the AC cranking. "Portable air conditioners aren't as quiet or efficient as built-in systems, but they can provide meaningful relief during heatwaves, particularly in bedrooms," says Georgina. If noise is a concern, "many people find using a timer or earplugs overnight helps balance comfort with practicality," she adds.

"Good design isn't about relying on one solution. The most comfortable homes combine orientation, insulation, ventilation, shading, and glazing to minimize heat gain in the first place. The less heat that enters your home, the less energy you'll need to keep it comfortable," says Georgina.

I'm getting a little warm just writing this in my apartment in the middle of August. Luckily, it's almost time over here in London to start thinking about cooling down and decorating for the cozy season.

"What this means is that you're not constantly waiting for crises to erupt but engaging in maintenance tasks to prevent them from happening in the first place."

The best architectural features tend to be those that don't just please the eye, but also carry out an important practical role in enhancing the whole experience of living in a building. This might mean they draw in extra natural light, or perhaps prevent heat loss, even add in some valuable storage.

One of the best examples of one of these pragmatic yet beautiful features is brise soleil — a method of shading expanses of glazing that, in the hands of the right designer, will also help to shape the entire look of a house, adding depth and interest at the same time as allowing for some ethereal light effects within.

Using architectural features to prevent overheating is something that is becoming increasingly important in our climate, so whether you are embarking on an extension or renovation project, or are starting from scratch, brise soleil should definitely be something you are considering. We asked the designers for their views on the best ways of incorporating what is fast-becoming a must-have addition.

What Is Brise Soleil?

The jargon of the architectural world can often feel a little intimidating, so let's begin by looking at exactly what the very fancy-sounding brise soleil actually is. In short, brise soleil is a French term, meaning 'sun breaker'.

These sun breakers most often take the form of horizontal fins, louvres or even grids that protrude out from the face of a building, predominately over areas of glazing, with the intention of stopping the full force of the sun's heat from entering a house. Increasingly, vertical brise soleil are also be used, installed in front of windows and fixed glazing.

Far from being just another of those passing architectural trends, architect Caroline Shortt, director of Barc Architects, explains their important function. "Brise soleil acts as external protection against overheating. By shading the glass externally, it stops solar heat before it strikes the glazing, making it particularly effective on south-facing elevations.

"The beauty of brise soleil is that it doesn't block light completely — it still allows an ambient light through and this can be controlled by the direction and angles of the louvres."

Where Does Brise Soleil Work Best?

There is no doubt that there are some really striking examples of brise soleil out there — so much so that it is easy to forget their practical role. It is important, however, to be aware that they aren't always the right fit and need to be specified with care, something that Richard Dudzicki, director of RDA, is keen to point out. "Brise soleil should not be installed automatically on every elevation. A horizontal system is unlikely to provide much benefit to north-facing extensions and glazing, which receive limited direct sunlight. It can also be less effective on east or west-facing windows, where the sun is lower and may pass beneath the louvres. In those situations, vertical fins, external blinds, shutters or carefully positioned planting may be more appropriate."

Caroline Shortt agrees that, in some cases, alternative methods of shading, such as window treatments to keep the heat out, might be more suitable. "Brise soleil isn't always the right fit — particularly on west-facing glass where the late afternoon sun sits very low, or on sites exposed to high coastal winds. In those instances, we look at alternatives, such as deep roof overhangs, recessed glazing, or splayed window reveals that open up views while naturally shading the glass, alongside high-performance solar control glass."

Vlad Diachok, co-founder and lead designer at Diachok Architects, also advocates taking a property-specific approach to solar shading rather than immediately falling back on brise soleil. "We see solar control as something that should respond to the specific space, climate, and desired result, rather than as one standard solution. Across our projects, solar shading elements are used for different purposes, including shading, glare reduction, privacy, protection from direct sunlight, and as part of the architectural expression itself."

How Can You Maximize Its Benefits?

As well as making a strong architectural statement, brise soleil is the ideal way to combat the ever-increasing issue of overheating. That said, the success of brise soleil is very much hinged on good design and careful planning, as Richard Dudzicki explains. "The depth, spacing and position of the louvres must be designed to respond to the orientation of the façade, the height and angle of the sun, and the size of the glazing. A successful design should provide shade when it is most needed without making the interior unnecessarily dark throughout the year.

"Its practical functionality also needs careful consideration," continues Richard. "The structure must account for wind loading, drainage and access for cleaning, as leaves and debris can collect between the louvres or in adjoining gutters. When properly designed, brise soleil can become more than a shading device. It can reduce the risk of summer overheating while giving depth, rhythm and identity to the façade."

It's clear, then, that this isn't a feature that can just be slapped on all floor-to-ceiling glazing haphazardly and expected to do it's job — to be worthwhile, professional input is highly recommended, particularly when it comes to getting the size and angles just right, as Caroline Shortt explains. "Sizing comes down to mapping the sun’s seasonal path. We carefully calibrate the depth and angle of timber or steel louvres so that low-level winter sun can penetrate and warm the room, while high, harsh summer glare is screened out."

What Are the Different Design Options for Brise Soleil?

Brise soleil takes many different forms, but is most commonly constructed from timber or aluminum — sometimes both.

"We most often use lightweight aluminum, but timber fins are another good option," shares Caroline Shortt. "Sometimes we combine the two, with aluminum angles and wooden louvres."

Caroline goes on to explain the other design options to consider when specifying brise soleil. "Sometimes taking a vertical approach works better, in front or to the side of the glazing to block the harshness of the sun. Louvres can also be fully adjustable so that they can be tweaked according to the time of day or even as the seasons change."

As with the overall design of your brise soleil, the materials chosen for its construction need to be selected with individual needs in mind, something architect Jeff Kahane, founder of Jeff Kahane + Associates, explains is a consideration if you plan on using your brise soleil as a structure on which to grow up any planting. "Brise soleil made with wood slats and supporting fins can often be given an adjacent planting bed so that in the long run it can have climbers growing up to its slats and along much of its length — which can, in time, provide additional shading as well as softening the aesthetic.

Caution needs to be taken if that is the plan and the structural engineer always needs to factor the potentially very considerable weight of mature climbing plants into their calculations. Bespoke wooden solar shades can be designed to cope with those potential imposed loads, whereas my feeling is that this would be difficult, or maybe impossible, with some of the very slender aluminum brise soleil."

Can You Retrofit Brise Soleil?

If you are only just getting around to addressing your home's overheating, you may well be wondering whether brise soleil is something that can be added on and how much disruption is likely to be involved, particularly if you plan on living in your house while renovating.

Richard Duczicki feels that this is a feature best designed in from the offset. "Brise soleil works best when it is treated as part of the architecture rather than an addition applied at the end. At Pitched Passivhaus (above), the external brise soleil is integrated across the rear elevation, above the large areas of glazing."

"Incorporating it works best when integrated into the structural design early on, ensuring the louvres feel like a natural part of the architecture rather than an afterthought," agrees Caroline Shortt, although she does point out that they can be retrofitted if structural requirements are properly assessed. "You can get off-the-shelf models, or have them made-to-measure. You just need to be careful with the downward load and check your wall can take the weight. Most brick or block houses will be fine, but with timber frame you might want to take extra care."

Jeff Kahane goes on to explain that, while retrofitting might not be ideal, it is certainly not impossible. "The brise soleil we have designed needed to be incorporated into the overall design of the new building works from the very start so as to avoid the need for any large brackets being fixed to the face of the walls, which was essential for our clients. However, if having those visible brackets is not a problem, and the appointed structural engineer can confirm that the wall can take the proposed loads, then the options for potentially using an 'off-the-peg' brand of brise soleil will be greater."

Do Brise Soleil Only Suit Modern Homes?

There is no getting away from the fact that the majority of brise soleil is seen attached to striking modern homes — but can owners of traditional properties also benefit from their sun-shading abilities without them looking out of place?

"There are definitely ways of adding sun shading to period houses — just think of the beautiful verandas with overhangs seen on many Victorian properties," says Caroline Shortt. "You can get really slimline, minimal metal brise soleil too that take away that harsh glare while being barely visible."

It is also worth noting that, while brise soleil won't usually require planning permission, if you are adding it to a listed building or one in a conservation area, you may well need to make an application.

Along with keeping the inside of your home cool, brise soleil are also a useful way to shade a patio — and if you choose a design with louvres that can be closed, they can provide protection from the wind and rain too once the weather changes.

In an ideal world, your home's visual language would speak volumes about the phases you've lived through, the people you love, and, importantly, the person you are in this very moment. But, if we're being honest, the doomscroll of buzzily described 'chic', 'stylish', 'must-have' interiors from butter yellow everything (yes, still) to chrome thalis rebranded as contemporary organizers and steel-framed couches has become gauche, tired, and ultimately a never-ending cycle of craving luxury. Now, the Japanese principle of taru o shiru curbs this tendency.

Literally translating to learning to be content, it's an SOS of the hour where it feels like you can't have a moment without your eyes twinkling at the sight of a new fad on your feed. This philosophy turned Japanese design principle beckons a moment of introspection to ask, 'Do I really need it?'

So, how can you practice taru o shiru in your living space, and why is 'enough' a luxury in and of itself? Let's talk about it.

What Does Taru O Shiru Mean?

"Taru o shiru (足るを知る) is usually translated as 'less is more', which makes a discipline sound like a decorating preference," says interior designer Yoko Kloeden. "Closer to the sense is knowing what is enough.

"Not what is enough in general, but what is enough here, in this room, for the way you actually live. No number is attached, and that is deliberate. It is where the idea parts company with minimalism, which tends to arrive with a prescribed quantity and a faint suggestion that you are failing to reach it."

Instead, Yoko explains that taru o shiru leaves the quantity to you, which is more generous and, in turn, considerably harder.

Why Is Enough a Luxury Rather Than a Restriction?

Yoko answers that the concept of enough is a luxury because a great deal of what fills our homes is not really for us. "It is for the person who might come round — the guest, the neighbor, the version of ourselves we would like to be seen as," she notes.

"Accumulating beyond what we need, and displaying it, is at bottom a question about confidence. It is very human, and most of us have done it. However, knowing your own enough asks more of you than filling a room does."

She finds that it asks for the self-awareness to know what you actually need, the maturity to know who you are without the props, and the confidence that what you own is not a measure of your worth. Knowing what to spend on in a living room and what to thrift for it are smaller lessons that can help along the way, but taru o shiru can't function on this alone.

"It also demands an eye. Recognizing which few things genuinely matter to you and telling them apart from those that merely impress is a skill — and not a common one. Most of us find it easier to accumulate than to discriminate," she states.

"A home that fills every corner becomes rigid. On the other hand, a home that leaves space can grow with its people." The Japanese concept of ma ties into this philosophy of less by finding the beauty in naked space.

How to Use Taru O Shiru to Design Your Home

"Start by being honest about how you actually live, rather than how you imagine you might. In briefing conversations, we ask fairly ordinary questions — what kind of cooking do you really do, where do you actually read — and the answers often surprise the person giving them," says Yoko.

"Someone who briefed a show kitchen realizes they cook twice a week and someone who wanted a wall of bookshelves reads on a tablet in bed. Once you know the truth of it, the curation resolves itself."

Allowing room for restraint might also be the solution to getting your taste back. It'll help you question what you want for your home and aid in avoiding copycat interiors that look like they've been ripped off every other Instagram.

She reveals that the clearest example comes from clients who wanted neither bedside tables nor a bed base. "The mattress sits directly on a tatami floor, and a pair of paper lanterns stands on the floor beside it, serving as the bedside lights," she says,

"Each of those elements is a subtraction they chose, not one they put up with. And if you take the time to understand the space, you'll notice nothing in the room is missing. It holds precisely what they decided was enough."

According to research from 2022, the average Londoner is spending a whopping £800 on takeaways each year. And while it may be easy to chalk that up to laziness, there may be something else at play. According to the experts, the way you design your kitchen can actually dictate how likely you are to cook in it. That's right, your takeaway habit isn't actually your fault; it's your kitchen's.

This may sound like a convenient line, but there's actually some science to back it up. It's all about the psychology behind your modern kitchen design, and how certain features and designs can impact your desire to cook. Don't believe me? Just take it from Karen Haller, one of the leading authorities on behavioral color and design psychology. As she explains it, "From a behavioral design psychology perspective, our environments can influence the way we behave, and the kitchen is no different. If the layout makes cooking feel awkward, frustrating, or more effort than it needs to be, we're naturally going to be less inclined to cook."

There's not just one thing at fault here, either; there are a whole slew of different design mistakes we're all making that are leading us straight towards those food delivery apps and away from our ovens. So, I asked the experts to break down exactly what they are, and what we should be doing instead, so we can say goodbye to our takeout habit once and for all.

1. Disjointed Layout

You could have the most gorgeous space, but if you've got the wrong kitchen layout, none of it will be worth a thing. Your layout provides the fundamental foundation for your kitchen, dictating how it feels to move around and use the space. And nothing will have you reaching for Uber Eats faster than a bad kitchen layout.

Of course, at the most basic level, the wrong layout will make your design look awkward, but it goes beyond this, impacting the way your brain responds to it, too. "If a kitchen layout is illogical, cramped, or requires too many extra steps, it can actually cause muscle tightening on a subconscious level," explains designer Alicja Wawrzyniak. As the founder of Alwa Design Studio, the psychology of design plays a central role in how Alicja approaches her work, and her projects are always created with the relationship between spatial design and daily habits in mind.

If your kitchen immediately triggers this uncomfortable, negative physical reaction, your brain will respond to this as a genuine threat, finding solutions and alternatives to prevent this experience. "When the layout disrupts the natural flow of meal prep, our subconscious naturally seeks the path of least resistance to avoid that stress," explains Alicja, adding that "More often than not, that means reaching for a takeout menu."

Ignoring design principles like the 'working kitchen triangle' or opting for an oversized, centrally located kitchen island, which blocks the natural path of movement, are some common examples of this issue.

2. Lack of Prep Space

"One of the greatest mistakes made when designing a kitchen is to provide too little clear counter area next to the sink and stove," explains Kanika Bakshi Khurana, founder of Kanika Design, who highlights the significant role interior design plays in creating stress-free environments.

Little mistakes, such as not leaving yourself adequate prep space around your kitchen appliances, can be enough to put you off cooking, making the whole experience feel overwhelmingly intimidating and mentally exhausting.

The problem is, so many of us get so distracted by all the different appliances and accessories in our kitchens — which we convince ourselves we need — that we forget to leave enough space to do the actual cooking.

Instead of overcomplicating things, Kanika suggests leaving yourself one solid block of countertop space solely for prep work. "When everything is organized, and the flow through the kitchen makes sense, cooking will be a lot more enjoyable," she says.

3. The Sensory Experience Is Off

As Karen Haller points out, this idea is not solely limited to how your kitchen functions. Even if you follow all the kitchen design rules and have the most perfectly logical layout, if you neglect the sensory side of your design, you'll likely still find yourself stuck with a space that feels less than satisfactory.

The idea of color psychology in interior design is central to Karen's work and, as she explains, "The colors, materials, textures and lighting all contribute to how we experience the space, influencing how we think, feel and behave when we're in it." While this will apply across the entirety of your home, in the kitchen, it can have some of the most notable effects on your quality of life.

"If the environment doesn't support the experience you want when cooking, it can affect both how much you enjoy it and how inclined you are to cook in the first place," she says. The way we eat plays such a crucial role in the way we live, and when you're unable to find the joy in cooking and constantly find yourself consuming processed fast food, over time, that will take a toll on your general quality of life.

"With my clients, I always start by looking at the behavior they want their kitchen to support and what would make cooking feel easier and more enjoyable for them," explains Karen, adding, "That includes the layout, but also the sensory experience they’re creating through color and lighting."

This can, and should, look different from person to person. "For example, in my own kitchen I need brighter, more vibrant colors to give me energy and make cooking feel fun, which in turn encourages me to cook," says Karen. But, Karen adds, "Someone else may want their kitchen to feel less stimulating, so they might use soothing, less saturated colors to create a space where they feel more relaxed and want to spend more time cooking."

This comes back to why introverts and extroverts choose different paint palettes, and reflects the unique way in which we respond to our surroundings.

And it's not just the aesthetics that constitute the sensorial experience of your kitchen; it's also worth considering the social aspect of your space. Kitchen designer Johnny Grey is known for his ergonomic, people-led approach to kitchen design, and this is something he pays careful attention to when designing homes. He always encourages orienting your space so that you are "Cooking facing into the room, ideally on a working table, island or peninsula." Noting, "You can’t have a conversation with anyone when they are behind your back."

How to Design a Space You'll Love Cooking In

So, what does an anti-takeout kitchen look like?

At the top of your priorities should be designing to remove the friction from your space, making it as simple and seamless to use as possible.

One of the best ways to do this is through establishing kitchen zones. This is the approach Alicja adopts, saying, "It starts with creating intuitive, dedicated zones for tasks so everything you need is exactly where you use it, like storing spices and oils right next to the stove, or keeping knives and cutting boards by the prep sink." This, along with a logical layout where the sink, stove, and fridge are all within close proximity to one another, provides the perfect foundation for a kitchen you'll actually enjoy cooking in.

Building on from this base, you can begin to look more granularly at what makes your kitchen feel inviting. "Beyond the practical setup, wellbeing in the kitchen is deeply tied to where our eyes land while prepping and cooking," explains Alicja.

Thinking about sight lines and where your eyes will naturally fall while cooking can help you understand what makes that experience more or less enjoyable. "What do you see when you look up from the cutting board?" asks Alicja. "Having a window looking out onto the garden, a clear sight view into an open-plan living and dining room, or simply being able to comfortably interact with family during your cooking routine makes a massive difference." If your prep space looks directly onto a blank wall, chances are you won't look forward to cooking there.

This links back to Johnny's design approach, where fostering human interaction is central to the design process. As he says, "The key is to make cooking enjoyable. Thus, eye contact is vital to make cooking a sociable process." The kitchen should orient around the cook, with easy, uninterrupted paths of vision leading directly towards prep areas for a more sociable, laid-back feel.

Some homes just feel 'finished' — not only do they have beautifully 'put together' interior design schemes, but they also function effortlessly and are a pleasure to spend time in.

Good quality flooring, first-rate paint finishes and well-designed furniture are foundational. So it's easy to assume that the things that make a home feel 'finished' are the artworks and decorative touches that can be left until last. Yet that's not always the case.

There are a number of things that make a home feel finished that are best planned from the outset. Whether you're planning a kitchen extension or a full refurb, discover the elements that should be planned from the start and those that can wait, according to interior designers.

1. Integrated Cabinetry

Whatever the style, homes that feel 'finished', don't have clutter lying around or tons of cables trailing from sockets. This is because the cabinetry and hidden storage space have been carefully considered in advance.

"A home looking finished is not just about the things you add at the end," says London-based interior designer, Manuela Hamilford, founder of Hamilford Design. "Well-designed cabinetry should be planned early, so it can hide the televisions, cables, routers, toys and everyday clutter that every home has."

"We plan sockets, internal lighting and storage around what the client actually owns," the designer adds. "When everything has a proper place, the room immediately feels calmer and more complete."

It's not just about the cabinetry exterior either. A home feels properly finished when the same level of thought continues behind closed doors.

"Paint cupboard interiors in the same tone as the joinery, or use a complementary neutral," says Manuela. "Also pay attention to the shelving, hinges, and internal lighting. It is not about making a statement; it is about making practical storage feel as considered as the rest of the room."

2. Consistent Lighting Temperature Throughout the House

Choosing pendants, lamps and wall sconces is the fun part of a home lighting scheme. However, the wiring, lux levels, and circuit load should be planned at the start of a project. This ensures the number and location of fixtures, switches, and electrical outlets are optimal and in the best places.

Although lighting requirements change from room to room, something that takes illumination to the next level, according to Manuela, is enabling a consistent lighting temperature throughout your home.

"Most people know to layer wall lights, lamps and ceiling lights, but consistency matters just as much," says Manuela. "If the color temperature changes from room to room, the whole house can feel slightly disconnected, even if you can’t immediately work out why."

"We usually recommend keeping bulbs at around 2700K throughout," Manuela adds, which tends to be the industry standard if you want to unite all your lighting temperature. "Dimmers are essential too, allowing the lighting to shift naturally from day to evening and giving the whole house a more considered, finished feel."

3. Conveniently Located Sockets and Switches

The placement and appearance of sockets and light switches play an important part in how polished a home feels. Ensuring you have enough conveniently placed and elegantly covered electrical outlets for the number of appliances in a room not only looks smarter; it enables life to run more smoothly.

"Sockets and switches are easy to overlook, but standard white plastic plates can jar in an otherwise considered room," says Manuela. "Line them up properly, avoid placing them too close to the skirting and choose a finish that works with the door handles and other metalwork.

"It is a small detail, but one that makes the whole scheme feel more resolved."

It's also about tactility for New York-based interior designer Marina Hanisch, who always emphasizes the importance of thoughtful hardware to her clients too.

"Switches and electrical plates are elements people interact with every day," says Marina. "We love incorporating high-quality, beautifully crafted options, because they act like the jewellery of the home, bringing a sense of refinement and intention."

4. Attractive Architraves and Skirting Boards

Older homes often have attractive architraves (door casings), window trims, and skirting boards (baseboards), which give an elegant finish to a room. However, newer builds can lack these features, leaving rooms with basic wood trims. The idea isn't to fake period details where they don't exist, but rather infuse these functional elements with elegance.

"A detail that instantly makes a home feel more bespoke is treating doorways as architectural moments rather than simply framed openings," says Marina. "Wrapping a portal in continuous millwork or stone creates a sense of intention and cohesion, transforming something functional into a design feature that feels considered."

"We'll often carry the same material throughout the home's portals and extend that language into the baseboards, casings, and surrounding millwork so every transition feels seamless," the designer adds.

Whether Marina's team is working with a beautifully grained rift white oak or a timeless limestone or travertine, the material is always chosen to complement the architecture rather than compete with it.

"Consistency is what gives these moments their impact," says Marina. "It's a subtle intervention, but one that lends a home a lasting sense of warmth, permanence, and quiet sophistication."

5. Quality Door Handles

Most renovations will require you to refurbish or replace interior doors. Whether it's a rub-down and repaint of existing good-quality doors or new ones entirely, it's also an opportunity to consider the handles.

"Door and cabinet handles are used every day, so their weight and finish matter," says Manuela. "A solid matte handle instantly feels better to touch and makes a home feel better made. It is one of those finishing details people notice without necessarily knowing why."

Changing the ironmongery on existing joinery is one of interior designer Clare Gaskin's favorite ways to elevate a scheme without necessarily spending a huge amount.

"Changing wardrobe handles — and ideally hinges where appropriate — can completely alter the personality of a piece," says Clare. "The same applies to internal doors, and the front door."

"Door furniture can have an enormous impact because these are some of the elements of a home that we touch and interact with most. Something as simple as replacing chrome lever handles with aged brass knobs can change the character of a room."

For internal doors, Clare recommends considering the house as a whole, rather than changing the ironmongery in individual rooms, unless a space is particularly self-contained.

"Also think about how new ironmongery relates to other finishes in the room, from window furniture to electrical sockets and light switches," she says.

"They certainly don't all need to match; we're firm believers that a home can work beautifully with a mixture of metal finishes, but the balance needs to feel considered. Attention to the details you see and touch every day is often what makes a home feel finished."

Some elements, such as socket and switch faceplates or door handles, can wait until later in your design scheme. However, most of the suggestions above are best considered at the start of your project. These, alongside your favorite artworks and accessories, will ensure your home feels 'finished' at the end of it.

Lighting is everything. Too much, and the room feels overbearing. Not enough, and you can't see all the decorative choices you've already made. Light is what enhances a room, what washes over it, and bathes it in a golden glow. It makes spaces look better. It makes us look better. But only when done well.

These are the designers who know more than just where to buy lighting — though that is important too. They know how to craft lighting schemes, to pinpoint the moments in a room worth highlighting (pun intended), and to create workspaces which manage to be cosy when needed, too.

With their tricks, you'll be able to create a lighting scheme worth lingering in, living in, and looking at — from the first cup of coffee to the last glass of wine.

Ambient Lighting

"Ambient lighting is the lights you turn on when you're trying to create a vibe, not what you need to work or focus by. And for ambience, a room can and often does have up to seven different light sources, as optionality is the most important thing when it comes to layering. This is how you manipulate and construct an atmosphere. Optionality is key — you should be able to light up any space like Christmas if you choose to one minute, and then dial it down to a cozy level the next.

In our WOW!house room this year, we had overhead lighting, thin lights in niches, LED strips behind the bar, backlighting, cove lighting in the ceiling, lights trained on our crystal artefacts, and lights in the bar. It was only a small space, but what's the point of spending all that time choosing materials if you're not going to light it correctly?

As a basic lighting rule, what you're looking for is a light option that will help you find your glasses (so, really bright), and one to watch TV by curled up in the almost-dark, with everything else in between. You then want each light source to be on a dimmer so you can turn them up or down as need be.

The way to know where to place those lights is to think about how you will use the space, but also to understand the architecture. Look at where the windows are, and which corners are furthest from them and might need a bit more illumination. Ask yourself how you want the room to feel in the evening. And from there, you will be able to place the lights in the spots you will want them most — so you can read, watch movies, or simply relax."

Accent Lighting

"I am someone who likes to make sure there are always objects of interest on display in every sightline, but who never wants a room to feel cluttered. So I identify what the important angles are — what I will see the moment I walk in the door and what will be in front of me when I'm sitting on the sofa. This is where I put my visual pleasures. It's also these areas you need to add accent lighting to, to make them really sing.

Accent lighting is usually hidden in the ceiling, or might be placed on or behind a shelf to illuminate it. It could even be a well-positioned table lamp on a fireplace. I love to hide inexpensive LED strips from Amazon in coving details, or behind mirrors or at the back of bookshelves. It costs almost nothing and yet makes a room feel instantly more luxe.

I am also a big fan of the pedestal, or of creating an installation in a corner. This could be a sculpture on a plinth, or it could be a drinks trolley. Add a mirror behind it, train some accent lighting on it, and it's like you're in a gallery.

Ultimately, I have always felt that the absence of a thing is as important as the thing itself, and that is why I leave so much space between each vase, treasure or objet. But the same principle applies to light — you want to leave some areas dark so the ones you've highlighted really stand out. This is why accent lighting is everything; it allows your favorite pieces to be seen loud and clear, to ensure people's eyes rest on the most important moments, and to make it feel like your space has been properly curated."

Task Lighting

"Task lighting does exactly what the name suggests — it's the lights you use when performing tasks. This could be working at a desk, prepping food in the kitchen, or perhaps even vacuuming the carpet. It's different from ambient lighting in that it's not about trying to create a mood but about you wanting to be able to see — really see — what you're doing.

In a kitchen, you want good, bright task lighting, but it's also likely to be a space you entertain, so you also need options to make it cozy. I will always ensure there are downlights over the island or food prep area, as that is also likely to be a place you sit at with a book and want to be lit well, too. Lights under wall-hung kitchen cabinets are always a good idea, illuminating the counter immediately underneath them, but not imposing on anyone trying to have a relaxed time around the dining table. I'm designing a home with a central hob that has two workspaces on either side, and it has a central hood and a linear LED integrated into the stone worktop, making three forms of lighting.

But even if there is only one form of task lighting, such as a desk lamp in your study, how you control it is key. I always have two switches for two circuits — one that controls just the task lighting and one that controls the accent lights. That way you can immediately light a room for how you want it to function in that given moment.

It's worth remembering that task lighting doesn't have to look utilitarian, and in fact is often more prominent, especially in the case of the lights over an island. So choose decorative-looking pieces that fit with the rest of your scheme, even if their function is anything but."

Lighting Temperatures

"The perfect light temperature is 3000K — nothing more than that. The K scale is the measure of how warm or cool a light is (the lower the number, the cooler it is), and 3000 will give you a wonderful golden warmth. I know the industry standard tends to be 2700K, but honestly, going up that bit further makes all the difference.

And this is the temperature I choose for all my bulbs, for both ambient and task lighting. It's a warm white, and I can't stand cool whites; they set my teeth on edge. I don't even understand why you'd have cool-temperature bulbs in a doctor's surgery or dentist's waiting room — there is no need for them in the northern hemisphere where our natural light tends to be a little cooler, too.

The trick is not to go for a filament bulb, as the light from them can tend to be a little orange, and that's not what this is about. This is about the light just before sunset on vacation, a light that bathes you and makes you feel good. Because making you feel good is what a home should always be about, and 3000K is where to start."

How to Choose Light Fixtures

"The first and most important thing to think about when choosing light fixtures is that you never want to be able to see a bulb with any of your lights — it’s too obtrusive and glaring — so lampshades are really important. These could be fabric, smoked glass, porcelain, or any other material, as long as the bulb is well and truly hidden. This is your first step to ensuring that the light you choose is going to be flattering.

The next most important thing is asking yourself where the light fixture will go and what it will be used for. In a powder room or bathroom, it doesn't need to be such a clear light, so you can choose something with a gauzy fabric shade or camouflaging glass casing. For a space you want to read in, you want the light to be a little more direct, so you can choose a fixture with a shade that directs the light downwards, rather than spreading it all around the room. In a dining room, meanwhile, you want to think about the table as the focal point, so a pendant hanging with an upward shade can create a pool of light around it that makes the whole area feel more intimate.

Next comes the practical part: the calculations of the size. Wall lights need to give you enough space to move around, while overhead task lights should be around 30 inches (approx. 76cm) above the surface they're lighting, so factor the room's height into your shopping list.

Lastly, and maybe this is the most important, what is your decorative style? I love leopard print, so I will always choose a light fixture with a leopard shade if I can, but for minimalist spaces, go for a light in a single material, or for modern, eclectic schemes, don't be afraid to mix and match. Be brave, have fun, and find the light fitting that not only works in the room you have, but casts a flattering, fabulous glow too."

How Many Lighting Sources Does a Room Need?

A living room — and in fact pretty much any room — ideally has five sources of light. We're talking overhead, wall, floor lamps, table lamps, and task lighting. The more the merrier, really. This way you can highlight portions of the room, making it wide or small depending on how you are using it, with tiny reading corners or bathing a party in a warm glow.

Not that the overhead light always has to be central — hang them in the corner, which makes them feel much more like an installation, and you’re more likely to actually turn them on.

This large number of lights is essential because in any well-designed room you should be able to have a meeting or a rave, to be serious or to dim the lights, turn the music up and get a little drunk.

Really, any good living room should be about balance. And that many lights are what will help achieve it. So, the lights need to be at different heights — some above you as you sit, some only just above eye level. Formality and informality, a space to find peace and to have fun, to be introspective or extroverted. A room for every side of who you are."

The entryway is where we move between home and the outside world every single day. It's the first place we arrive home to and the last place we stand before stepping out into the world. Most of us think of an entryway in practical terms — it's somewhere to hang a coat, take off muddy shoes, put down our keys or greet guests. While these functions are important, they only tell part of the story.

Color psychology helps us understand that color does far more than influence how an entryway looks. It influences how we think, feel and behave every time we arrive home or leave the house. Every day, we move between different roles and responsibilities. We might return home after a demanding day at work, a busy morning with the children, or hours spent travelling, meeting people or making decisions. Equally, when we leave, we're preparing ourselves to step back into those responsibilities once again.

The entryway is where those two worlds meet. Which is why the entryway colors we choose deserve just as much thought as those we choose for the rooms beyond it. They become part of the experience of arriving home and leaving again, supporting us through both transitions. We often hear that the entryway creates the first impression of our home. While that's true for visitors, there's another first impression that matters even more — our own.

Before choosing colors, it helps to start with a different question. How do you want to feel in the space, and what do you want it to help you do?

Color psychology reminds us that there isn't one perfect color for every entryway. The right choice depends on the experience you want the space to create, because every home, every household and every way of living is different.

Rather than choosing colors simply because they're on trend or because we like the way they look, color psychology helps us choose colors that support the role we want the space to play in our daily lives.

Different colors support us in different ways. Some help us let go when we arrive home, while others prepare us for stepping back out into the world. These are the five colors I'd recommend choosing for an entryway, whether you're looking for a calming, or energizing space.

1. Green

Green says, "Come in. You can let go now."

Like the long exhale that comes after finally putting everything down, green helps us let go of whatever we've brought home with us the moment we step through the front door. It becomes easier to leave behind and settle into being there.

Soft greens, such as sage green, create an exhale, bringing a feeling of ease and reassurance. Deeper greens create a full exhale, with a stronger sense of stability and of feeling settled. Brighter greens, such as sour lime, create the refreshing exhale. With more yellow in them, they feel lighter and more energizing, helping lift your spirits as you step inside.

2. Yellow

Yellow says, "Hello! It's lovely to see you!"

Like the first rays of morning sunshine, yellow brings an instant lift as you step through the door. It creates a cheerful sense of welcome.

Softer buttery yellows make the space feel warm and inviting, while richer golden yellows bring greater energy and vitality, helping you leave with a feeling of optimism.

From a cheerful yellow front door to a bunch of fresh flowers, yellow seems genuinely pleased to see you, leaving you with a smile, whether you're arriving home or heading out into the day.

3. Blue

Blue begins with the mind.

Our minds rarely arrive at the front door when we do. They're often still occupied with what we've just left behind or already racing ahead to what's coming next.

Blue supports the mind through both transitions. Light blues help busy thoughts settle, turquoise refreshes and invigorates the mind, while deeper blues encourage focus, composure, and self-assurance, helping you arrive and leave with greater mental clarity.

4. Brown

Brown says, "You're safe. I've got you."

Like the reassuring feeling of being fully supported, brown brings a sense of stability and strength.

Whether it's the rich warmth of chocolate brown or the lighter touch of tans and caramels, these earthy colors help us feel grounded and secure. Natural wood, woven baskets, terracotta tiles, and earthenware all reinforce that same grounded feeling.

5. Red

Red says, "You've got this."

It's the color that can give you a final burst of energy before you step out the door, spurring you on to take that first step with confidence and determination.

As we see red before any other color, even the smallest splash can make a striking impact — as seen in the unexpected red theory. Red within artwork, a picture frame, or a red lampshade is often all that's needed to create that feeling of readiness before you take on the day.

Of course, few entryways rely on a single color alone. The colors we combine influence one another, creating an overall experience that are greater than the effect of any individual color.

It's not just the color that matters, but the nuance of that color you choose. A soft sage green creates a very different experience from a bright lime green, just as buttery yellow feels different from vivid lemon. The depth, brightness and intensity of a color all shape how your entryway feels.

Color doesn't have to come from wall paint alone. It can be introduced through painted woodwork, furniture, flooring, lighting or carefully chosen accessories. Even small amounts of the right colors can influence how your entryway feels every time you arrive home or head out into the day.

If you have ever thought of a Japanese home as simplistic in not just aesthetics but also its efforts of curation, then I have to burst your deeply misinformed bubble. Each design decision, no matter how effortlessly executed has been painstakingly chosen to evoke an illusion of calming simplicity. But the good news is that there are some digestible design lessons that can quietly shift the way your home feels.

"The changes that make a home feel calmer are rarely the expensive ones," says interior designer Yoko Kloeden. "Most of what I have learned from Japanese design is small, undramatic, and works on how a room feels rather than how it looks."

Here are five tips of guidance that Yoko frequently returns to and how to translate them for your own home.

1. Design for the Nose and Ears, Not Only the Eye

"A Japanese home is experienced through more than sight. Timber is a good example. It smells, it sounds different underfoot, and dropping something on it is far gentler than on tile or stone," says interior designer Yoko Kloeden.

"Choose one material you can actually smell, and one sound you want to hear — water moving, a door sliding softly, air through a window. Rooms designed only for the eye feel oddly flat once you are living in them."

Designing sensory products into your home is a quick and effective way to make your home feel interestingly unique. Think a dreamy indoor pond, a noren dancing in the wind, or komorebi interiors.

2. Decide What to Hide and What to Display, Then Commit

"This is not about decluttering. It is about choosing one place where a single thing is properly shown — a shelf, an alcove, a console — and putting everything else away," says Yoko, speaking to Japanese spatial planning.

"A Japanese home gives a single ceramic or branch its own space and leaves the surrounding surfaces empty, because the emptiness is what lets you notice the object at all. Displaying five things well is harder than displaying one, and much less restful."

If you know yourself to favor low-maintenance, then less is always more. And if you have the bandwidth to care for more intricate stylings, then it's important to stay disciplined so your home shows out, even on a busy day.

3. Buy Fewer Things, and Older Ones

"It is worth thrifting something unique rather than filling a room from the high street. Vintage pieces tend to be better made, carry their own history, and are a more sustainable choice," Yoko advises.

"I find that the result of collecting antiques is a room that reads as gathered over time rather than bought in one afternoon. And this is a large part of why some homes feel settled, and others staged."

At the same time, there are some things that are better bought fresh. So, knowing what to thrift for your living room and other spaces is crucial.

4. Choose Materials That Age

"Most surfaces in a Japanese home improve rather than deteriorate. Timber darkens, clay plaster softens, stone wears smooth where hands and feet pass," Yoko explains.

"Things that bear the traces of the work and care taken to make them help us reconnect to those who came before us, and feel a little more grounded. Choosing a material that will look better in ten years is a quiet way to make a home feel calm."

I'd even go as far as to say materials that stay immaculate can sometimes make a home look cheap and characterless. The romance of a home lies in the wabi-sabi champagne pops and the patinaed pots.

5. Lower the Eyeline

"Traditional Japanese rooms are composed to be seen from a seated position on the floor, which puts everything — table heights, window levels, the point where a wall meets your eye — lower than we are used to," Yoko points out.

"You need not sit on the floor to borrow this. Dropping the height of one piece of furniture, or hanging art lower than feels correct, opens up the wall above it and makes a room feel taller and quieter. It is the cheapest change on this list and often the most noticeable."

I vividly remember my mother teaching me to make my bed when I was younger. She showed me how to tuck in the corners of the sheets and fold down the top of the duvet, so it looked orderly and more "put together". But perhaps the most fun part to learn as a kid was the karate chop method for perfectly fluffing the pillows. I was dumbfounded at the time — how does this fun trick make the pillows look so perfect?

For those of you who may not be so familiar, the karate chop is exactly as it sounds. You place a cushion on a bed, chair, or sofa and karate chop the top center to create a pronounced divot. Melbourne-based interior stylist and design educator, Loui Burke explains, "Like many styling techniques, the original intention was to make a cushion look less rigid and more relaxed and lived-in." And for a while, it did just that.

However, like many easy decorating hacks and styling tricks, the karate chop method evolved into something more rigid, formal, and too contrived. Rather than your house looking effortless, a karate-chopped cushion begins to read as amateur. So, is the karate chop method done for good? Or can this style be revitalized to meld with contemporary interior design trends? All that and more below.

The Evolution and Downfall of the Karate Chop Method for Fluffing Pillows

As mentioned, the original intention was to make a cushion look less rigid and more relaxed and lived-in. But as Loui Burke explains, "It was then adopted by the masses and became completely lost in translation. Instead of looking relaxed, cushions were positioned stiffly upright with an exaggerated chop, creating the exact opposite effect."

It almost became a case of, 'It isn’t finished unless you chop it,' when you were never meant to notice the detail at all. The cushion was meant to look inviting and as though it genuinely belongs in the space, but the exaggerated chop defeats its original purpose. "Now it looks amateur," adds Loui. "It suggests someone has picked up a design tip without considering the rhyme or reason behind intentionally disrupting a perfectly shaped cushion."

The only time a pronounced cushion chop is really functional is "when you want to leave a visual signal that a room has been cleaned and tidied, much like vacuum lines in a carpet." For instance, you might see a formal chop in a luxurious hotel bedroom, as it shows elegance and perfect tidiness. While you might not always want such prestige in your everyday home.

Those strong visual signals say, 'I've been here. I've done this.' "They turn a comfortable room into evidence of a completed task, and a clean and orderly home should not be mistaken for a put-together, styled home," says Loui. Let the space relax and feel good.

Styling cushions doesn't need to become a formula that gets overdone; pillows and throws are meant to add layers, texture, and comfort to a room. "We don't think it's necessarily out of style, but we do feel like everyone is in a more organic lifestyle world right now," say Jordyn and Barry, the masterminds behind Brooklyn-based studio, The Brownstone Boys. "Homes don't need to be so crisp and polished; they are more lived-in, and we love that people are embracing that," they say.

So while the exaggerated karate chop is a little too formulaic for the 2026 home, there are still ways to bring it back to its natural roots.

How to Style Cushions in Contemporary Homes

First and foremost, there are a few ways you can style a pillow. And in terms of the contemporary karate chop, Loui clarifies, "There is a difference between a chop and a light tap." And the latter is what you should aim for when arranging throw pillows on a couch or bed. "A gentle tap is perfectly fine if it helps the cushion look relaxed and lived-in," says Loui. Otherwise, prop the cushion up naturally and let the fabric and design be seen. So, relaxed cushions get a tap; formal cushions should simply be propped upright.

And further, a pillow today should be styled based on where it lives in the home. For instance, on a sofa or seating, "I generally lean cushions at a slight angle. That's it. If it needs a gentle tap to relax it, give it one. After sitting against it, fluff it back into shape and lean it again," says Loui. If the fluff feels unnatural, you may not even need a throw pillow on your sofa.

On a bed, there is a little more styling leeway, as there are typically more pillows to style (six pillows on a bed is the designer sweet spot, while some bedrooms are more minimal).

At the moment, the approach is very much 'less is more.' However, layering in design can bring your pillow arrangement to life without feeling too 'stuffy'. On a bed, you can introduce a lumbar, bolster or pebble-shaped cushion instead of lining up five standard 45-by-45-centimeter squares. Rather than a formal chop, "I position cushions on a bed slightly more upright and straight," says Loui. "Do what works for the room, but avoid repeatedly using the same size and shape," adds Loui.

Plus, "Layering with different textures and materials is another way to get the best out of your pillows. We personally love a really versatile pillow that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing," say Jordyn and Barry of The Brownstone Boys.

The cushion insert will also make an enormous difference in how often a pillow needs 'tapping', a chop, or a re-fluff. "Use a feather insert or a lofty fiber alternative, such as corn fiber or hi-loft fill, that mimics the movement and softness of feather and down. Rigid synthetic inserts are useful for seat cushions, but they rarely create the relaxed shape you want from a decorative cushion," explains Loui.

Below are a few different throw pillows that would either look great with a relaxed 'tap' in place of the chop, or that help you ditch the karate chop method altogether.

So to sum it up, today's karate chop should always be more of a 'tap', and if the tap isn't working, then simply let the pillow talk for itself by standing it upright, or let it lean at a relaxed angle. "I know some people will think it's silly to care this much about a cushion, but the alternative really is that simple: lean it naturally or don't have it there," Loui adds.

If you speak to any Feng Shui expert worth their salt, they will bring every entry point in your home under the lens. Since these are the portals through which energy is filtered, it's worth paying attention to these spots. And garden gates, in particular, are often overlooked.

When you underestimate the garden gate, it's likely to get cluttered, age poorly, and in turn hinder the free flow of good energy. This is one of the most important garden Feng Shui mistakes to amend before summer is over.

So, here's a closer look at what makes a garden gate a flimsy backyard feature in Feng Shui and what to consider when fixing it.

When Does a Garden Gate Let Good Energy Escape?

Feng Shui consultant Rosanna Deflorian tells me a garden gate starts blocking good energy the moment it feels unwelcoming. "If it's surrounded by clutter, blocked by overgrown bushes, or difficult to open, you're sending a signal that energy isn't welcome here. Simply put, if you have problems getting in, chi also has problems getting in," she says.

"I'm also very strict about maintenance. A creaky, broken, or rusty gate isn't just an eyesore. It actively attracts ill fortune. It's one of those things people overlook, but in backyard Feng Shui, it matters more than you'd think."

Rosanna warns that another red flag is when the garden gate is directly aligned with the front door. "This creates a straight line that lets energy rush in and out too quickly, which can affect both health and wealth. In Feng Shui, we call that a 'poison arrow'," she adds.

"I also advise against spiky plants near the gate. Cactus palms and any plants with sharp needles or thorns are not recommended. They create hostile energy that can unsettle anyone arriving."

What Makes a Garden Gate Good for Feng Shui?

For a gate that protects and welcomes good energy, Feng Shui expert Aeros Chin tells me that proportion matters most. "Size it to the house and fence and ensure that it's not oversized or flimsy. A gently curved approach path, rather than a straight line running right at it, softens incoming energy so it settles rather than rushes in," he explains.

"Material and color ideally align with the gate's compass direction. For example, black suits north, east, and southeast entrances, while red suits south, southwest, and northeast."

Aeros also recommends keeping hinges well-maintained so it swings smoothly. "I'd also keep the immediate surroundings clear and tidy," he adds. "And a small but often-missed detail is that gates that open inward are much better for Feng Shui. This direction of movement tends to symbolically (and literally) invite energy in, rather than pushing it away."

Another garden design red flag that could be tanking the inviting energy in your outdoor space deals with layout. And adjusting your outdoor furniture placement for Feng Shui is the best way to fix it.

Interior designers can be divided into two camps. There are those who choose rugs as the very last thing in a room, the final flourish that brings together and unifies all the other choices they've made around it. And there are those who pick the rugs first; who start from the ground up; who get one to fit the room exactly and become the base from which all else follows.

Either way, rugs are clearly a very important part of the design process, and that makes picking the perfect one feel overwhelming at times. From how big it should be, what material it should be made from, whether it should be washable or patterned or both or neither, from where to buy rugs to how much to spend on them, there are almost as many decisions to be made as there are rugs to choose from.

"You get taught some principles about rugs at design school that aren't always true in the real world," says Romanos Brihi, co-founder of Studio Vero and a rug aficionado. "Teachers will say a rug needs to be big enough to fit under every piece of furniture... but actually, there are exceptions to that rule."

So let us decode the decrees, bust the myths, and simplify the process of choosing a rug, with advice straight from the minds of the experts who really know.

Size

As Romanos from Studio Vero mentioned in the intro, conventional design rules dictate that a rug ought to be big enough for every piece of furniture to sit comfortably on. "I just hate small rugs," says the designer Victoria Hagan. "They feel so mean!" But before you go and buy the largest rug on the market, there are several caveats to that approach.

"In reality, it’s ok if the sofa is only half on the rug, and the rug doesn’t go all the way under and out the back," Romanos says. "But ideally all the other furniture would be able to sit on top of it."

"A rug is one of the most important things in a room, and I start thinking about which rug to go for at the same time as I'm planning furniture placement," says the interior designer Olga Ashby. "So once you know the size of the coffee table, how far away the armchairs will be, and where the sofa will go, you can pick a rug that is just big enough it sits under them all... or at least mostly under the sofa."

Her rug size rule expands to say that if you can see the back of the sofa then the rug needs to be large enough to expand out 10 inches (25cm) more than the sofa's edge (like in the image above, of one of her projects in Paris), whereas if the sofa is against the wall then the rug needs to be just big enough to be placed under the sofa's front feet by about 8-10 inches.

For dining rooms, a rug needs to be large enough for the table and chairs to sit on it in the middle, with at least 10 inches of overlap behind the back of the chairs, while when it comes to bedroom rugs, there are cheats to be had. "I think of people when they first wake up as being like babies who need to be really wrapped up and looked after, and that means the first thing I want them to step on is a really soft rug next to the bed," Olga says. "A bedroom rug need only be big enough to place at the side of the bed, tucking under the edge, but doesn't need to go all the way under. If you have space, then for symmetry I like to repeat the process on the other side."

Style

"I really believe in the power of a rug to transform a room and make it look and feel so much more comfortable in an instant," Olga says. "So I always choose rugs that bring a lot of texture, that are usually wool (which I find the most comfortable), and that have a soft neutral color you can build the rest of the room on top of."

This is different from how Studio Vero approaches rug style. "We always start with a bold rug — either that, or some eye-catching art," says Romanos. "You really need a strong starting point for a room, and there is no better place for that to be than a graphic rug."

Natasha Lyon, founder of design studio Appreciation Project, has an approach that lies somewhere between the two. "People come to me because they really love color and texture and print but they don’t know where to start, and it’s wonderful showing them how good a room can be if you lean into all those things," she says. "And actually, the rug is what can make or break a space — it’s one of the most important decisions as it’s what pulls everything together and ensures the space is elegant or cozy or whatever mood it is you’re trying to evoke. I always choose the rug last, once everything else is in place, and I can see the colors in the room and how they look in the light. I’ll seek out something that exists already — perhaps it’s a hint of tobacco in a stripe or a touch of green in the background of a wallpaper - and use that as the main color for the rug. In that way, even if it’s bold and daring, it still feels connected to the scheme."

She says that in one project, above, with a contemporary floral Josef Frank wallpaper on the ceiling, she wanted something equally modern for the design of the rug. "And so I chose a big, geometric one from Nordic Knots. Even though it’s very different, it doesn’t clash because it has the same citrus tones, and a softness in the negative space of the big square pattern that allows the flowers to really stand out."

It seems that the key factors to consider when picking a rug's style are its material and colors — that you want something that feels good underfoot and that ties in to the hues already in the room (or that you plan to use elsewhere).

Materials Explained

In this section, we're breaking down the different qualities of common rug materials in terms of how they contribute to the style and the practicality of your rug design. However, not every rug is a single material. Blends often have a practical or budgetary benefit. Wool and cotton blend rugs, take this Betula flatweave rug from John Lewis as an example, combine qualities. It's more durable and plush than a cotton rug, but cheaper than a pure wool rug.

Wool blended with polyester or Nylon will again retain that plush, hard-wearing quality of wool, but again cheaper, and often with the added benefit of reduced stain resistance and 'easy clean' qualities, as those manmade fibers don't absorb liquids as wool does.

Wool

Wool rugs hit the sweet spot between durability and feeling plush underfoot, and in terms of style, they bring an opportunity to bring an organic quality to the floor through texture.

"When I visited rug brand Tai Ping's Milan showroom earlier this year, it really struck home how versatile a material wool is," Livingetc.com's editor Hugh Metcalf tells me. "Seeing the variety of shades it naturally comes in is a neutral scheme-lovers' dream, but it takes color so well that the resulting rugs are vibrant, but never have that 'artificial' feel."

"Wool rugs are amazing," echoes Hannah Sher, co-founder of Heritage Threads and a professional rug restorer. "We work with some from the 1800s, and they wear really well."

It's one of designers' favorite choices too, but there are some drawbacks to this natural material. "The biggest culprit for ruining them is moths or carpet beetles, though," Hannah explains.

If you're worried about that possibility, that's where knowing where to put them is all important. "Wool is actually best for high-traffic areas that get disturbed a lot," Hannah says. "What these pests like best is the area under sofas, those dark, undisturbed places they can feast without being noticed."

"Just keep them vacuumed and put pheromone traps down to get rid of any moths," she adds.

Wool also tends to shed, but only temporarily.

Wool rugs tend to be the most expensive styles, but you'll still find larger options starting from £500 or so.

Cotton

Cotton is easier to wash than wool — many cotton rugs can actually go straight into the washing machine, though do check if the backing specifically allows this before you try. That makes it the best for entryways, kitchens, anywhere that mess is likely to be made. The trouble with cotton is that colors tend to fade fast, especially when walked upon, so they are not a long-lasting, durable rug. "And as a result they're not a material we tend to see — they're not really worth restoring," Hannah says.

Cotton rugs are flatter, both visually and underfoot, too. They give a light, breezy effect, but not an expensive, plush look. They're often affordable, too, with larger sizes costing as little as £100 in some instances.

Jute

"This is one of the most hard-wearing materials you can have for a rug," Hannah says. "Jute will withstand pretty much any normal thing you can throw at it."

Jute is best for both budget-friendly and eco-conscious shopping — not only will a jute rug last and last (so you only have to buy once), but they are often not very expensive to start with. You can expect to find a decent-sized one for around £200.

They're made from sustainable plant fibers; they are fully biodegradable, meaning jute rugs won't sit in landfill forever once you're finally done with them. But what they have in affordability, they lack in real 'comfort' — jute tends to be slightly scratchy to walk on. This can be part of its charm — think rustic, think French vacation, think a Greek terrace — but it doesn't make for the most sumptuous living room.

Sisal

Similar to jute, sisal is just as eco-conscious (made from the fibers of agave plants) but tends to be more expensive than its counterpart. It is, however, best for pets — in my own living room, I have a large sisal rug that has withstood two puppies (now large dogs) and one cat whose favorite pastime is scratching threads out of the furniture and accessories.

However, sisal is not water-resistant and so doesn't do well with easy cleaning techniques. You can't shampoo it to get out a spot stain, and scrubbing will ruin the fibers, so don't choose sisal if you're prone to spillages.

Synthetic fibers

"Recycled plastic is becoming a very popular choice for modern rugs, as it is hardwearing and so is great for contemporary life," Hannah Sher says.

The best rug choice for a busy modern family: synthetic fibers are easy to clean, will last and last, and advances in technology have seen them become softer and softer. However, they are never really 'plush' (though recent design developments may soon see them become so), and they flatten fast, so if you're craving the feeling of sinking into a soft rug, it's better to go natural. Some synthetic materials can also cause static build-ups, too.

Brands like Ruggable are known for its Polyester rugs, which you're able to just throw in the washing machine, also.

How Are Rugs Made?

Depending on budget, rugs are either made by hand on looms, often in countries such as India and Nepal, which have been experts in the art of rug-making for centuries, or they're made by machine in a factory, mass-produced to larger scales and quantities. The latter tend to be more affordable, but the nuance of color you might get when a person is weaving each thread is likely to be less great.

Hand-knotted rugs made by individually tying thousands of knots onto a vertical loom may take many months and should last for many years. Hand-tufted rugs are faster to create and are made by a handheld tufting gun which punches yarn through a canvas - a little like a sewing machine crossed with a laser gun.

Handknotted vs Handtufted vs Machine-Made Rugs

"Hand-knotted rugs are more cleanable than hand-tufted rugs," says designer Olga Ashby. The reason for this? There is no glue used in the hand-knotting process, whereas in hand-tufting, it's a glue that holds the tufts together, and this can't withstand much water. Machine-made rugs tend to be tougher than any handmade ones, often with synthetic fibers, so they are even easier to keep clean. "But they lack the loop pile of a handmade rug, which is always just so beautiful to look at," Olga says.

Flatweave vs Pile

The pile is an important part of what to think about when wondering how to choose a rug — flatweave or with a thick, luscious pile? Both have their places in the home. "I love both," says the interior designer Alex Dauley. "It really depends on the scheme you're trying to create. For a more relaxed room I tend to go for a flatweave, while for a more luxe space I like a pile. If it's really luxe, I will look for a wool pile that has some silk in it too."

Flatweave, she says, is better for family life. "They are easier to maintain," Alex adds. "I put them in high-traffic areas like open-plan kitchen, living, dining spaces, or I will often see them as runners in entryways. Piles are what I would save for the principal bedroom or a really grown-up living room."

What's Trending in Rugs?

"I'm definitely seeing a lot more bold rugs now," Alex says when I ask her about rug trends. "There is a shift towards pattern and color, and not being afraid to use both. This plays into a general move towards a mood of exuberance, and being daring in our homes because we want them to be uplifting spaces full of joy. Because of that, I am also seeing a rise in custom rugs, usually handmade. People want to have autonomy over the colors in their rugs, and this is the best way to ensure that."

As for shapes, Alex is noticing that the classic rectangle isn't quite so common as it once was. "There is definitely a trend for irregularly shaped rugs," she says. "Some curves, some asymmetric edges. Again, this plays into people wanting their homes to feel really individual and personal to them."

Budget

Are Expensive Rugs Actually Worth It?

"Rugs can cost a lot, but they are worth every penny, for sure," says the designer Tatjana von Stein. "A rug is where you get a bit of drama, the comfort in a room, the feeling of the space. You want to step from something cool like a hardwood floor onto something warm, and you get a different sensation from a really well-made, hand-crafted rug."

Like with most pieces for the home, rug prices run the whole range. You can spend barely anything or several thousand per square inch. But as Tatjana points out, if you can afford it, you really do get what you pay for. An expensive rug usually comes with that price tag because of the hours, or weeks even, that have gone into making it, and the artistry that entails, and the sheer beauty and physical feeling you will get from it.

How Much Should You Spend?

"My favorite rug brand is Nordic Knots, as I love its colors and how durable they are," says Amber Pan, co-founder of the design studio Studio UMA. "I have suggested to many of my clients that we use this brand for it’s a heavy traffic areas, and the budget I'd expect to allow is between £3000 and £5000 for a medium-sized rug."

That is not the most she has ever spent, however. "In contrast, I have also used The Rug Company's artist collab rugs and Tan Carpet collectible ranges, which are usually on the higher end of thee price scale," Amber adds, noting a Rug Company rug can be several thousand pounds per square foot), "but they do amazing work together with artists. Because these are more expensive, I'd save them for use in a study, or hanging on a wall even. Definitely not in high traffic areas."

For a bedroom, it's worth spending more on a rug — to Olga's point earlier on how comforted you want to be first thing in the morning, the more luxe you can afford, the nicer it will feel. Because they don't have a lot of foot traffic, they will have a longer lifespan, so you might be able to justify them on a cost-per-year-of-ownership ratio. "I would often use silk in a bedroom, but only in a bedroom," says Tiffany Duggan of Studio Duggan, because it's too expensive to risk elsewhere. For living spaces, especially if you have kids and pets, it may be more sensible to keep the rug budget to under £1,000.

For under £1,000, you can afford a large, highly durable machine-made rug. Washable brands such as Hug Rug and Ruggable start at under £100 for smaller rugs and go up to around £ 1,200 for the largest and most expensive varieties. Meanwhile, jute rugs are available at brands like La Redoute for well under £100.

For between £1,000 and £10,000, you can afford a machine-made rug from a trend-led, designer favorite like Nordic Knots, while even luxe atelier Tai Ping starts at £ 1,200 for its ready-made wool rugs.

With a budget of over £10,000 you can afford to get a super-luxe brand like Deirdre Dyson, Tai Ping or The Rug Company to design a hand-made rug to your exact specifications, altering the size, color and shape to suit your precise needs.

Repair and Conservation

Depending on what sort of issue you have a rug, repair costs will vary massively. Dry cleaning a rug can be around £100-£200 to remove any stains, while holes, tears, and patching can cost anywhere from £100 to £1,500 at a company like Hannah Sher's Heritage Threads. If you have a handwoven rug and it needs to be sent back to makers overseas for repair, then the cost can usually start at around £700, all of which is worth factoring in when deciding how much to spend on a rug.

Practicalities

Stain Resistance

"Pups tend to love natural materials and do their accidents on purpose when it’s a new natural rug," Amber says, which is as good a reason as any not to lay an expensive rug in a living space. "It's important to accept that accidents happen, whatever your living situation, and to make choices on materials for rugs according to how accident-prone you are likely to be."

Low-pile options or flatweaves are the most likely to be stain-resistant as liquids and dirt can't soak and sink into them in the way they can for deep piles. And while jute and sisal are hard to clean with water, the most stain-resistant rugs are going to be washable rugs made with man-made fibers.

Loop Pile and Pet Claws

As someone who has owned many styles of rugs and one very claw-y cat, there is no getting away from it. Pet claws will ruin a rug. It's been the tighter weaves and lower piles that have suffered the most - the areas she has pulled out are most immediately noticeable. On our shaggier rugs, with looser, deeper piles, it's harder to tell as the overall effect is bigger and more abundant anyway. Our jute rug has survived pet claws the very best, with no noticeable damage at all.

Darker Colors vs Patterns

"I am not the sort of person who could ever have a white rug," says the designer Minnie Kemp. "So I go for a jute and wool mix in at least two or more different colors. if you have a few colors in a pattern, it's harder to spot the mess. I feel like darker hues show up flecks of dust, while lighter rugs show up stains. Go for a pattern as your safest best for a really practical rug. It's why we use them in hotel projects."

Washable rugs vs Wool

I have an issue with my large washable rug — it's too big to fit in the machine. So while it seemed great in theory, I've been taking it to the specialist laundromat with the large washers, and then struggling to get it dry before it begins to smell. So don't assume a washable rug is the cure for all your woes. That said, the smaller washable rug we use in the entryway folds perfectly into our home machine and comes up like new every time — you'd never know that muddy dogs trample over it on the daily.

Meanwhile, our wool rug was the home of a pet accident recently, and a spot clean with some regular carpet cleaner was all it needed to bring it back to life. So choose a washable rug for a smaller area if you think it will need regular laundering, while a wool rug is fine for larger spaces if marks are likely to be contained.

Low Pile vs High Pile

"Low pile rugs are easier to keep clean," says Minnie Kemp. "You can dab them with a cloth and get a stain out really quickly. The trouble with high pile rugs is that your wine of coffee always manages to soak into them, and take a lot more care and time to make good as new again."

Low pile rugs are therefore better for family areas, and high pile rugs are better for spaces where food isn't eaten and kids are not sipping drinks.

Why Do Rugs Shed?

Think of a rug as your favorite sweater — both can shed from time to time as fibers get loose through wear and tear. A new rug will tend to shed a lot early on, losing loose fibers trapped in its weave during the manufacturing process, something that tends to settle down over time and after the first three or four vacuums. High foot traffic can also cause rugs to shed, as people trample fibers loose within the weave.

"The best way to avoid rugs shedding is to have them vacuumed regularly, especially at the beginning of their life," says Minnie Kemp. "You shouldn't think of shedding as being part of a problem; it's usually just a natural part of having a handmade design." Machine-made rugs tend to shed less, as their creation process is more precise.

How Long Should a Good Rug Last?

"A good rug can last years, especially if you look after it well," says designer Olga Ashby. "I actually buy rugs that are treated to be stain-resistant, and then get them re-treated every year, a process that involves a spray by a professional. This does cost money, yes, but it prolongs the life of the rug, and means it can be something you pass down for generations."

A general rule is that the more expensive and better made a rug is, the longer it will last — often because people tend to treat these better. A budget rug in a house with pets or children can reasonably be expected to last between three and five years before starting to look tired and need replacing.

Are Washable Rugs Worth It?

Yes, washable rugs are worth it, especially if you want to lay a rug in a high traffic area, or have pets and kids or are prone to spillages yourself. A regular-sized rug can fit in a home washing machine and be dry by the next morning, ready to be replaced back in its position. Washable rugs tend to be cheaper than handmade designs, and are more resistant for stains (which can be washed right out of them with ease), meaning they are definitely worth it.

Where washable rugs fall down is if you have a large space and large washable rug, which will be too big to fit in your at-home machine and take so long to dry it will often start to smell before it does.

Two-tone kitchens were the theme of 2025 and, at first, I welcomed the look. Any trend that embraces a more colorful, characterful space is no bad thing, and the kitchen has been a neglected area for far too long. Why would you not want to break up a run of matching cabinetry with a contrastive island that makes a distinctive accent? Well, a year on, I regret to say they're already looking dated and overdone.

Now, don't get me wrong — I accept that kitchen island trends are transitory. The pursuit of an ever-fashionable home is entirely unattainable, but there are certain trends that are more enduring than others. Painting every kitchen island a different color from the rest of your joinery just isn't one of them.

My main objection? Your kitchens are beginning to look like patchwork. While I'd favor this Frankenstein-esque jigsaw puzzle over a soulless, all-gray kitchen with utilitarian fittings, a bit of cohesion will always look visually cleaner and calmer in a functional space like a kitchen (especially when your space is small). I'm not alone in this sentiment, either. Halfway to 2027 and kitchen styles are already evolving again, with designers favoring a little more harmony this time round. Here's how they're planning kitchen designs that feel more sleek, unique, and timeless in 2026.

Why Shouldn't You Paint Your Kitchen Island a Contrasting Color?

Somewhere along the line, we seem to have collectively decided that our kitchen island ideas need to be different from our cabinets. There have been many iterations — from the contrasting countertops to fluted bases — but the trend has culminated more recently in two-tone kitchens where the cabinetry of an island is painted in a bright, contrasting color to the rest of the kitchen.

As we look towards 2027, however, they're starting to fall out of fashion already. When an island is painted in an entirely different color to your walls or cabinets, it can often make a kitchen look too busy, with too many elements competing for the eye (like a patchwork quilt).

Leah Hook, principal designer at Gray Oak Studio, says this can be especially problematic in small kitchens. "Here, a contrasting island can feel disjointed, making the space feel even smaller," she says.

There’s also the consideration of longevity. According to Charlotte Tilby, kitchen expert at LochAnna Kitchens, contrasting kitchen island colors are naturally more "trend-led". "Because the island is often one of the largest elements in the kitchen, changing it later can be difficult without affecting the wider scheme," she says. "A bold color can look striking initially, but more neutral and tonal choices tend to offer greater flexibility and longevity, especially with evolving tastes."

What Color Should an Island Be Instead?

So, where are kitchen island color trends in 2026 actually headed? A stylish kitchen doesn't necessarily hinge on the specific shade of the island itself, but simply on a hue that feels more harmonious with the surrounding space. Maybe it's a color found in your tiled backsplash, or a wood stain that complements your kitchen cabinet color. An island can still stand out, but the difference shouldn't feel stark or jarring.

"Recently, there has been a move towards more cohesive and considered kitchen schemes, where the cabinetry, walls and materials all work together," explains Al Bruce, kitchen designer at Olive & Barr. "Many clients are now looking for a softer, more timeless feel, rather than having the island stand out as a separate feature."

As mentioned, this doesn't mean a total absence of variation at all, but it does mean more tonal kitchen islands that work with a larger scheme, rather than against it. "Homeowners are experimenting with tonal shades, tactile finishes, statement worktops and metallic details to give the island its own identity," says Charlotte. "This creates depth and visual interest, while maintaining a cohesive overall scheme."

Whether you opt for a natural wooden island where the countertop does all the talking, or match your shaker cabinetry with an island that's just one shade lighter or darker, the idea is to create a kitchen that looks visually cohesive while still avoiding overly co-ordinated, uniform units.

How Can You Make a Kitchen Island Stand Out Without Painting It a Different Color?

There are plenty of ways to ensure your island still stands out without relying on a bold color contrast. Leah recommends opting for a different kitchen countertop material as a simple starting point. "Dramatic veining or even colorful stone on the island with a quieter choice on the perimeter brings the statement moment to the true center of the room," she says.

Consider the materiality, too. Dramatic stone islands can make a serious statement, or opt for a wooden base with an inlay accent, as pictured above. Choose a finish that complements the kitchen colors found on your walls, backsplash, and cabinets. "Timber detailing, open shelving, or even a different style of cabinetry can give the island its own character without having to introduce another color," adds Al. "A combination I particularly like is a wooden island in ash or oak paired with painted cabinetry."

One benefit of natural materials, as Charlotte points out, is that they will also prove more timeless. "Natural timber, beautifully veined stone, and fluted or reeded detailing are all great ways to introduce interest," she offers as examples. "The use of softer, tonal palettes, where different textures and materials are layered together, creates a kitchen that feels considered, cohesive, and individual."

When Can a Contrasting Kitchen Island Color Work?

Of course, you may still want to paint your island a different color from your kitchen cabinets, and I'm not denying that it can't ever work at all. Instead of choosing bold contrastive shades, however, consider a tonal shade that echoes your walls or cabinets.

"Contrasting islands can also be particularly effective in a larger, open-plan kitchen, where color can help define different areas without the need for physical dividers," says Charlotte. "The key is to ensure the island still connects to other elements within the room, such as the worktop, flooring, lighting, or hardware, so it feels like a considered part of the overall design rather than simply a statement piece."

If you want your island to act as the focal point of your kitchen, this is when you can be a little bolder with your color choice. "A darker island can help to anchor the space and draw attention towards the heart of the room," Al notes. "Equally, a lighter island can work well if you don't want it to dominate the scheme. Ultimately, it's about making sure the colors work with the rest of the room."

Kitchen trends come and go, but you want an island that stays stylish until your next renovation. Painting it a different color for the sole purpose of making your kitchen more chromatic won't be the best choice long-term. By all means make it a contrast to your cabinets, but don't be blindly led by the two-tone trend. Instead, think about materiality, subtle color shifts, and other ways of accenting your island that won't disrupt your existing color scheme.

At this very moment, my apartment feels like it's been taken over by the season. And as the heatwaves fade and the trees begin to crisp, I'm thinking about all of the ways I can make preparing for fall easy. And at the top of my list are summer storage mistakes that need to be fixed.

A lack of zoned storage, mindlessly overloading the garage, storing things in damp spaces, mixing summer clothes with fall apparel, and neglecting summer decluttering are five mistakes experts recommend fixing before September.

So, before you have to reset your home for autumn, here's what you need to do first.

1. Lack of Zoning

"Forgetting to categorize your summer storage is one of the biggest mistakes you can make," says professional organizer Meghan Cocchiaro. "Come fall, it becomes harder to store away summer gear to do a seasonal swap into fall and winter, because all of the items are a mess in the garage and mudroom."

Instead of waiting to sort through a jumbled mess later, Meghan recommends organizing your things based on how you use items and assigning everything a proper home during the summer, not after. It will also make your back-to-school home reset much easier to endure.

Audra N George, founder of Pretty Neat, tells me that mindlessly loading everything summery into a garage is another storage mistake to fix before September. "Going all summer with things all over the garage is stressful," she notes.

"And then at the end of the season you will be left to make some tough decisions about where to store items." The solution to this mistake is to declutter your garage, loft, or any other place that serves as your storage hub for the summer.

3. Storing Things in Damp Spots

According to Cathy Borg, founder of In & Out Organizing, storing things in damp spaces or causing places to feel humid by stowing away items that aren't fully dry yet is a common summer faux pas.

This can be an especially popular apartment storage mistake since you're typically dealing with more compact spaces. "Storing your items in a damp basement can lead to musty smells and mildew," she warns. "A dry closet or any well-ventilated storage space is always the better option in this case."

4. Mixing Summer Clothes with Autumn Layers

One of the biggest closet mistakes that makes you wear less of your wardrobe involves a poorly organized wardrobe. And around the end of summer, this is caused by mixed warm and cool weather clothing living in a single space.

Although layering is a significant theme when dressing for the unpredictable transitional weather at this time of year, I recommend zoning your summer clothes from your autumn apparel to make resetting your wardrobe for peak fall a breeze.

5. Storing Without Decluttering

Lastly, and most importantly, storing your items without decluttering first is the biggest red flag of them all. And it's made even worse by purchasing storage bins and organizers before culling back the clutter first.

Consider decluttering things for fall and follow up by planning out your storage ideas only after you've pared back your home. I recommend starting with the kitchen to put away the grills and BBQs and bring out the casserole dishes and soup pots for hearty fall feasts.

We asked interior designers to weigh up the pros and cons of the most popular kitchen countertop materials, so you can find the right balance of practicality and style for your space.

1. Natural Stone

Few countertop materials have quite the same presence as natural stone. From richly veined marble kitchens to characterful quartzite and granite, every slab is unique, bringing natural color, movement, and a sense of permanence to a kitchen.

PROS

Character and individuality: "Natural stone like marble offers beautiful slabs to choose from," says Isabella Pacelli, junior designer at Roundhouse. "Each piece is different. Nothing has the same depth and beauty as a natural stone."

Sofia Lundgren, of Blakes London, agrees sense of character is key. "Natural stone brings an individuality to a kitchen that is difficult to replicate,: she says. "Every slab has its own variation, veining and character, giving the space a sense of depth and permanence."

Oozes luxury: "Marble has an undeniable sense of luxury and works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary schemes," adds Sofia.

"Every slab is unique; many can be book-matched for a really dramatic run, and the client gets to be genuinely involved - going to the yard, choosing their slab, seeing the veining they'll live with," adds Jayne Everett, creative director of Naked Kitchens. "That's part of the pleasure of a bespoke project. The range is vast, in pattern, color and price. Totally showstoppingly beautiful.

Some are hardwearing: Other materials, like granite and quartzite, are particularly hardwearing and heat-resistant. With the right care, natural stone can last for decades.

CONS

Heavy and expensive: Natural stone can be expensive and is also extremely heavy, so installation needs careful consideration.

May require sealing: "Some stones, particularly marble, are porous and require regular sealing,: warns Sofia Lundgren. "Marble can also stain, scratch and etch when exposed to acidic ingredients such as lemon and vinegar.

"For some, this is simply part of the beauty of a natural material; for others, it can make it less suited to a busy kitchen."

Can be prone to cracking: "Marble is porous," says Jayne. "Some materials carry fissures and can lead to cracking. It needs to be sourced carefully from reputable stone yards, slabs need to be selected and reserved early, and prices can be eye-watering. It rewards planning."

BEST FOR

Design-led kitchens where the worktop is intended to be a feature.

"Natural stone works particularly well in classic, country and high-end schemes," says Sofia. "If durability is the priority, granite or quartzite are excellent choices; if you're drawn to marble, embrace the fact that it will evolve and develop a patina with use."

2. Porcelain

Porcelain kitchen countertops have become an increasingly popular countertop choice, particularly for contemporary kitchens.

Available in remarkably convincing stone-look finishes as well as more minimal designs, it offers the high-end appearance of natural materials with a sleeker, engineered edge.

PROS

Durable and low maintenance: "Porcelain is an excellent choice for a busy kitchen, combining durability with relatively low maintenance," explains Sofia. "It is non-porous and highly resistant to staining, scratching, heat, and UV light, so it doesn't require sealing and is straightforward to keep clean.

Quality is improving: "Porcelain is improving constantly, partly because it's benefiting from the industry's move away from quartz," says Jayne Everett. "Three-dimensional porcelain is now coming through, which is fabulous for replicating marble convincingly. The choice is huge, and you get real consistency of pattern and tone between sheets."

"A lot of porcelains now have incredible depth and look closer to a natural stone than quartz," agrees Isabella Pacelli.

CONS

Lack of edge detailing: "Where the pattern is only printed on the surface, the veining doesn't run through the body of the material, so cut edges read as white. Worth checking before you specify."

Expensive: "Good-quality porcelain can be a significant investment and requires specialist fabrication and installation," says Sofia Lundgren. "While the surface is exceptionally hard-wearing, edges and corners can be more susceptible to chipping from a heavy knock.

"It also needs to be handled and installed correctly, particularly where cut-outs or complex details are involved."

BEST FOR

"A hard-wearing surface. A family who wants the beauty of a natural stone without the upkeep," says Isabella.

Sofia Lundgren agrees, adding: "It's great for busy family kitchens and contemporary spaces where practicality is as important as aesthetics.

"Porcelain is particularly appealing if you love the look of marble or natural stone but want a surface that is easier to live with day to day."

3. Wood

Wood kitchen ideas bring something to a kitchen that harder countertop materials often can't: instant warmth and character.

From pale oak to deep, richly grained walnut, a timber worktop can soften a contemporary scheme or add to the tactile, lived-in quality of a more traditional kitchen.

PROS

Timeless appeal: "Wood is one of the few worktop materials that genuinely warms a room," says Jayne Everett, Naked Kitchen's Creative Director.

Organic character: "It's a natural feature element in its own right, and it softens an otherwise hard-edged scheme," continues Jayne.

"It's also a fabulous food prep area - you can dedicate an area purely to chopping and prep and ages gracefully."

Renewable and repairable: When sourced responsibly, wood can be one of the more sustainable countertop choices, particularly if you look for FSC-certified timber. As well as being renewable, a quality wooden worktop can have a very long lifespan, as scratches and signs of wear can often be sanded out and the surface refinished rather than replaced.

CONS

The upkeep. "Wood has to be oiled and cared for regularly to maintain its look," says IsabellaPacelli.

Jayne Everett confirms wood must be properly sealed from the outset. "That's non-negotiable," she says. "Most of the concerns around timber is about maintenance, which is totally mitigated if the timber worktop is sealed correctly at the start."

"Wood is ideal for areas where you want to break up an expanse of stone or introduce warmth into a cooler palette," says Jayne Everett.

4. Stainless Steel

Once associated predominantly with professional kitchens, stainless steel has firmly entered the design conversation at home.

Its cool, reflective finish feels crisp and contemporary, while the patina it develops over time can give a kitchen a surprisingly relaxed, characterful quality.

And, if you didn't know, industrial kitchens are quietly getting cool again.

PROS

Durable and easy to clean: "Stainless steel is the ultimate workhorse and has earned its place in professional kitchens for good reason," says Sofia Lundgren of Blakes London. "Hygienic, non-porous, heat-resistant and highly durable, it is easy to clean and can withstand the demands of serious cooking."

Creates an architectural aesthetic: "Bespoke fabrication can allow the worktop, sink and splashback to flow together almost seamlessly, creating a strong architectural look.

Sustainable: Stainless steel's sustainability credentials lie largely in its longevity and recyclability. It's an exceptionally durable material that can remain in use for decades, while stainless steel can be recycled at the end of its life and new products can contain significant amounts of recycled material - making it a strong choice for a kitchen designed with longevity in mind.

CONS

Can feel cold: "Stainless steel has a distinctly utilitarian character, which can feel cold or industrial if it isn't balanced with softer, warmer materials," says Sofia.

Scratches easily: It will show fingerprints, water marks, and scratches, particularly when new. However, this is also part of its appeal: over time, the surface develops a softer, lived-in patina that can add to its character.

BEST FOR

Serious cooks and contemporary or industrial-style kitchens. "Stainless steel works particularly well when paired with timber cabinetry, natural stone or other tactile materials, helping to soften its more utilitarian character," adds Sofia Lundgren.

5. Quartz

Quartz countertops offer the polished look and substantial feel of stone, but with the consistency and practicality of an engineered surface.

Available in everything from quiet, barely-there finishes to dramatic marble-inspired veining, it's an incredibly versatile choice that can work just as comfortably in classic kitchens as it does in sleek contemporary spaces.

Quartz is being slowly phased out of the home market, for issues involved in the material's production process, rather than anything to do with its qualities. Similar materials are coming to market that no longer have these issues.

PROS

Large variety of choice: Quarts offers an enormous variety of colors, patterns, and, increasingly, textures.

Durable: "It's hard-wearing and can be super-durable and stain-resistant. Being man-made, durability is a top priority," says Roundhouse's Isabella Pacelli.

Affordable: "Quartz is widely available and sits at an accessible price point, which is why it's been the go-to material for so long," says Jayne Everett.

CONS

Lower wow factor: Some quartz can lack depth and doesn’t have that same wow factor as natural stone.

Silica health concerns: "The industry conversation has changed significantly around quartz," says Jayne Everett. "The health risk isn't to the homeowner; an installed worktop is entirely safe. It's to fabricators cutting and polishing the material, where respirable crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis."

"We strongly encourage anyone specifying it now to ask their supplier directly about silica content and fabrication practice."

6. Laminate

Laminate has come a long way from being simply the budget countertop option. Today's designs can convincingly recreate everything from richly veined stone to timber and more unusual finishes, making it an increasingly versatile choice for achieving a particular look without the price tag of the real material.

PROS

Affordable and versatile: Laminate is one of the most budget-friendly countertop materials, while the huge variety of finishes means it can replicate everything from marble and terrazzo to timber surprisingly convincingly.

Easy to live with: It's non-porous, straightforward to clean, and doesn't require sealing or the regular maintenance associated with some natural surfaces.

CONS

Less resistant to heat and damage: Hot pans can scorch or damage laminate, and although good-quality versions are fairly hard-wearing, the surface can scratch, chip, or be marked with heavy use.

Difficult to repair: Unlike wood or some solid-surface materials, significant damage can't simply be sanded or polished away. Once chipped, burnt, or badly scratched, a section - or potentially the whole countertop - may need replacing.

BEST FOR

Laminate is durable, low maintenance, and low cost, yet has poor heat resistance, and repairs can be challenging," says Alex Alonso, founder of Mr Alex Tate. "It's ideal for lower-budget projects or less-used spaces like laundry rooms."

Ultimately, the best kitchen countertop material is the one that strikes the right balance between how you want your kitchen to look and how you need it to perform.

Natural stone might win on individuality, stainless steel on hard-working durability, and wood on warmth, while engineered and more affordable surfaces can offer impressive practicality with fewer maintenance demands.

Think realistically about everything from your budget to how much upkeep you're prepared to embrace — and remember that a countertop doesn't necessarily need to remain pristine to be beautiful. Often, the surfaces that age, patinate, and tell the story of a well-used kitchen are the ones that give it the most character.
