Who are Design Lab by Livingetc’s stylists?

Your personal sourcing will be done by one of two trained interior designers who are part of the Livingetc team: Iokasti Sotirakopoulou and Miaad Latoof. They have both worked internationally and are now London-based, each with over seven years of experience in styling, room design, and creating moodboards for clients.

All you need to do is tell us about your product, budget and style preferences, and they will reply with three to five product recommendations, straight to your inbox. This is perfect for sourcing single items for a room — be it a statement lamp or a comfy new armchair.

To use the service you will need to share your email address with us, and you will be given the option to sign up to our newsletter. Any other information we collect — your design preferences and budget expectations — may be used for our own research so that we can provide a better service, but it will always be anonymised and you have the right to request removal at any time. What is Style?

Style is an interior-styling service for those looking for inspiration and direction for their interiors. At the end, you will receive a moodboard, styling notes and product suggestions — designed just for you and your room. It is great for those who want a little bit of creative direction, but don't have the time or budget to appoint an interior designer.

How does Style work?

You will book a 45-minute video consultation with one of our stylists. Beforehand, you will fill in a short questionnaire describing your room, needs, and style preferences. During the call, our stylist will gather an understanding of you and your project, allowing them to create a tailored interior package for you. Within seven working days, your stylist will send your design package. This will include a moodboard to help you visualise your scheme; detailed styling notes to get the look right; and product suggestions, including any paint or fabrics the stylist recommends.

How much does Style cost?

Personalised Product Finding

This is the personal shopping service that does the searching for you – whether you’re looking for a sculptural armchair, a two-seater mid-century sofa, a beautiful rug or a thoughtful gift, our stylists will hunt down the best options to fit your taste and budget. It is completely free to use.

What is Find?

Find is for anyone who knows what product they want, but isn't sure where to look or what to buy. You tell us what you need – a statement lamp, a Japandi-style bed, a stylish but practical rug for a hallway – and Design Lab's Stylists find it for you for free. You could use it to source the final touches for a room, or to find that statement piece that kicks off your new design.

Simply fill out the form above, telling us what one item of decor or furniture you need for your home. We will also ask what your budget is and work out any style preferences. Give us as much detail as you can, such as the number of seats for sofas and dining tables, or approximate dimensions for a rug. Our stylists will then find three to five product recommendations and send links to them directly to your inbox.

One rule you live by in your design philosophy?
I always start with emotion, I want a space to feel right before it looks right. I think about how you move through it, where you naturally want to sit, what you reach for without thinking. It is less about everything looking perfectly styled, and more about creating something that feels intuitive, a space that quietly supports your everyday life and still surprises you in small ways.

Do accent walls ever have a place in a contemporary home?
Absolutely, yes, especially when done through texture rather than just color. Tactile wallpaper, limewash, or finishes that catch the light can add depth and dimension, making the whole room feel more dynamic and alive.

With over seven years of experience across high-end interiors, FF&E, and showroom management, for me, design is a form of storytelling and an exploration of personality and emotion. I love uncovering how people live, the rituals that define them, and curating spaces that feel authentic, timeless, and deeply personal.

How would you describe your own interior style?
I’d describe my style as mid-century modern at its core, layered with vintage pieces that bring a sense of story.

A space where the furniture is out of proportion. It quietly unsettles everything and is often the first thing I notice.

One rule you live by in your design philosophy?
Always come back to a balance of form and function. Every piece should earn its place, not just visually, but in how it’s used and experienced day to day. Clean lines, organic shapes, and honest materials keep the space grounded, with a quiet connection to nature running through it.

Is a TV over a fireplace ever acceptable?
Honestly, my instinct is no. it takes away from the beauty of a fireplace to put a big black box above it, and the height is rarely right for comfortable viewing. That said, if the layout leaves you no other option, it can work, especially with a Samsung the Frame TV, so it feels more integrated.

When it comes to Easter decorating, my family in the US has always embraced eggs, bunnies, and pastel colors. It wasn't until I came to the UK that I learned about Easter trees, and even more recently, the Swedish tradition of making a Påskris for the holiday — a decorating idea that blends traditional floral and stem arrangements with seasonal motifs.

"Simply put, a Påskris is a bouquet of large twigs and branches, placed in a vase of water before Easter," explains Swedish interior creator Helena Lyth. The Påskris, or 'Easter tree', is decorated in different ways, honoring the season, and becomes a colorful moment in your home. Think egg ornaments, feathers, pastel colors, and even ribbons.

The Påskris is a Swedish Easter decorating ritual that can be appreciated and recreated throughout cultures and regions. And it makes for a lovely centerpiece idea or bouquet to bring life into the home during the spring season. Here's everything I've learned and what you need to know to create your own Påskris for Easter this year.

What is a Påskris? A Short History

A Påskris begins as a vase full of twigs and branches (ones that will bloom), adorned with festive decor. "At first, only the decorations are visible, but as the twigs stand in water, the Easter tree will, preferably in time for Easter, sprout and turn green," explains Helena. It's a way to signal that spring has arrived and nature has awakened.

Like so much around Easter and Easter decorating, the Påskris is a religious symbol. "It began in the 17th century when, to remember Jesus' suffering on the cross on Good Friday, people would lightly whip family members with birch twigs," Helena explains. "It then developed further into a playful game in which children played pranks on each other."

However, today it's been reimagined. "Only in the 19th century did the birch twigs begin to be decorated," says Helena. "In the 1950s, it really took off when the Easter symbol of eggs and chickens became clear decorations."

That's why we now see feathers in joyful colors and painted empty eggs decorating the birch twigs on the Påskris. "Basically, it was decorated with whatever could be found at home, on the farms," adds Helena.

How to Make and Style a Modern Påskris

Now the Påskris is a beautiful way to add color and natural elements to your Easter table decor or around the home. So, what do you need to create one?

The traditional Easter tree is made of birch, but today any type of branch can be a Påskris, and the twigs can be combined with spring flowers. like French tulips, too. "Cherry branches have become more and more common, probably because of the beautiful flowers, as well as faux feathers," says Helena.

As for what to hang on the branches, anything beautiful works, but since it is meant to be a tribute to spring and nature, it should preferably stick to a colorful, spring color palette and seasonal aesthetics.

That said, eggs in different styles are a must — glass, ceramic, or paper, anything goes. "And the Easter trees get bigger and bigger every year," adds Helena. "From small birch bouquets in my childhood, and now it's more like giant installations."

Though traditional, there are really no strict rules when it comes to decorating with Påskrisen in the home. Maybe you want to have an Easter tree in every room and create different styles for each tree (much like how we decorate with Christmas trees).

"But the thing to keep in mind is that it can be difficult to get it ready in time for Easter. You want your blooms in time to welcome spring," says Helena.

It's always interesting to learn about different decorating traditions and how they translate across cultures. The Påskris is a beautiful way to celebrate the new life that comes with the arrival of the spring season — and it makes for the perfect spring table centerpiece.

The idea of decorating with neutrals may suggest subdued and safe. To some, it's even boring (there, I said it). But these shades have come a long way and are now far from dull — they speak of sophistication, delicacy, and curation, and can fill the home with personality, depth, and richness. The overall spectrum is organic and grounding, and as such, wonderfully timeless.

Technically defined as 'color-free' tones, neutrals are to be found somewhere beyond the color wheel, where shades exist outside of pigment in a land where visual subtlety reigns. These hidden hues rely on undertones; their temperature (and attitude) defined by whether they lean pink/yellow (warm) or blue/green (cool). On the warm side, we have cream, almond, beige, sand, mushroom, camel, clay, cinnamon, and coffee, while the likes of soft white, ice gray, oyster, dove gray, pebble, steel, pewter, slate gray, and charcoal are cool.

Decorating with neutral color schemes in the home is a soothing salve for the soul, allowing the eye and the brain a moment to rest in a world filled with color and busyness. Their lack of extreme pigment balances us, and they adapt smoothly to moods and aesthetics without overpowering them, instead feeling calm, comforting, and quietly confident.

"‘In 2026, neutrals will be given more prominence than in years before — the fact Pantone finally made a white Color of the Year says a lot," says Kelly Hoppen CBE, owner of interior design company Kelly Hoppen Creatives. So, here’s how design-forward neutral homes will look (quite dramatically) different for 2026.

1. The New Way to Neutral

Decorating with neutrals in 2026 bears little resemblance to the cream, beige, and magnolias of the early 90s, the beige, taupe, and stone of the late 90s and early 2000s, or the grays of the early 2010s and the greige that followed. Neutral room ideas have evolved once more, and even with a more limited palette than most, the modern neutral color wheel feels fresh, exciting, alluring, and surprising.

"We’ve seen an absolute shift to much richer neutrals — butterscotch, chocolate, and terracotta — tones that are enveloping and cocoon-like, which centers around our desire for our homes to be more nurturing than ever," explains Sheena Murphy, founder of interior design studio Nune.

As our decorative awareness matures, the role of decorating with neutrals has turned to well-being. "There’s a pull towards warm neutrals that are comforting and easy to live with, such as caramels, mellow beiges, chocolate browns — tones that are more relaxed, for calm and inviting interiors," adds Emma Shone-Sanders, founder of interior design firm Shone Sanders Studio. "It’s less about making a statement and more about creating a space you feel peaceful in."

"So much research is beginning to appear on the neutral palette being better for your nervous system," adds Kelly Hoppen, as the tones step up to the plate to become acts of self-care, as well as self-expression.

2. Not-Always-So Neutral

Neutrals are truly morphing. Before it existed literally, as hues devoid of much pigment. But now, the rules are changing, and color is entering the arena. This broader definition of new neutrals marks a move away from purity and restraint towards nuance, character, warmth, and atmosphere.

"In 2026, neutrals will have a slightly broader palette, bringing in muted, earthy hues that act like neutrals," says Emma Shone-Sanders. "Nothing too bright — more those warm, pared back colors that feel restful, such as understated rusty shades and tonal greens paired with soft creams or woods to ground a room."

Greens are key to the reimagined neutral shades. "Sage is rising as an accent tone to white, beige, grays, taupes, and look out for a khaki tone," says Kelly Hoppen.

"I’m really enjoying seeing tones like olive with buttery creams and chocolates," adds Sheena Murphy. "I also love dusky pinks with dark terracottas, which evoke a feeling of harmony and nature."

3. The Neutral Materials to Choose

Material-wise, 2026 is set to be the year of tactility drawn from nature, meaning decorating with neutrals should engage the senses as well as the gaze. "Material and finish-wise, sustainable, earthy, and raw materials will reign, with woods and stone leading the way," tips Kelly Hoppen.

Materials that tempt touch are playing a leading role in interior design trends, expressing this more tactile approach. "We’re seeing a lot of linen, because it feels so relaxed and organic, and richer textures like velvet, chenille, mohair, and cord," adds Emma Shone-Sanders. "These materials work so well with neutrals because they bring interest and depth without shouting."

Tapping into the psychology of nurturing and belonging, decorating with neutrals is about imbuing spaces with personality and emotional reassurance. "As the need for homes as sanctuaries continues, we’ll see amped up texture on fabrics — more tactility in general — and more age and character on surfaces like metals and woods," says Sheena Murphy. "These elements often remind us of the past and make us feel nostalgic, providing both emotional and physical comfort."

4. A Nice Neutral Canvas

When seeking to refresh your neutrals, the wrong approach can leave a home at best, uninspired and like something we’ve all seen before, and at worst, physically unpleasant and unwelcoming. "Don’t go too cool with your neutrals — not only does it feel dated, but it also evokes a sense of cold and discomfort in an interior," advises Sheena Murphy.

"If there isn’t a lot of natural light, neutrals can easily become too cool for a space," agrees Emma Shone-Sanders. This is where using paint samples comes in — test as many materials as you can at different times of day to make sure they feel warm and friendly (like tones you want to be around).

Still think decorating with neutrals is for the unimaginative and unadventurous? It just takes a sprinkle of confidence and creativity. "Be brave and play with deeper tones that provide more dimension to your space," says Sheena Murphy. "Amp up the contrast for drama and interest, and experiment with unconventional tonal and more colorful pairings." How about ivory with soft mocha? Light gray with dusty peach? Or charcoal with truffle brown?

The modern neutral palette is one of variation. "Matching everything too perfectly can make a room feel a bit stiff — mixing shades within the same family usually looks much more natural and relaxed," says Emma Shone-Sanders. "Try layering different tones and textures, and pairing with other finishes like marble, onyx, aged brass, and bronze."

If you still feel stuck, refer to the neutral color wheel, which works exactly like its rainbow-like counterpart and will point you in the right direction for shade combinations and tonal temperatures.

And if all else fails, there’s one key rule to follow, as Kelly Hoppen sums up: "Always follow your sense rather than fashion, and choose what you love."

Sheena Murphy agrees: "The most important thing for real longevity is to be guided by the neutrals you’re instinctually pulled toward."

There is a duality to curating a home. On the one hand, you want a comfortable backdrop for everyday life, but on the other hand, you want your interiors to be a canvas for expressing your boldest style. So, how do you strike a balance between creativity and liveability?

'Confidence zones' are spaces in your home that are better suited for experimenting with your more out-of-the-box design ideas. Spaces like powder rooms, entryways, and offices, that are usually smaller and see less traffic, give us more 'confidence' to be bold because there's low risk and high reward. "We feel more confident being bolder in confined spaces because of scale, meaning we can create a more dramatic design impact in smaller spaces than in large spaces," says Kentucky-based interior designer Sarah Marks.

When it comes to interior design, it's always easier to keep your grand ideas pinned on a mood board rather than actually bringing them to life. That electric blue living room looked so cool on Pinterest, but would it actually overwhelm in real life? But decorating with color, pattern, and texture doesn't have to be scary — and finding your 'confidence zones' (below) will show you the perfect place to start.

1. Powder Rooms

You might have overlooked the half bath in your home, but powder rooms are one of the best places to go bold. Don't just take my word for it — interior designer Nate Berkus recommends experimenting with wallpaper in this space, too.

Why are these spaces a secret 'confidence' haven? "Powder rooms often have a more narrow and specific purpose, which means your daring choices have a defined place to live that will stand out but won't encroach on the rest of the home," explains Sarah Marks.

New York-based interior designer, Crystal Sinclair, says she also saves her more daring designs for powder room ideas. "On a practical level, the space is small, so you can use more costly materials without it really breaking the bank," she adds.

A color-drench situation, unique statement lighting, a busy patterned wallpaper — in a powder room, you can use these luxurious elements to excess.

2. Home Libraries

Whether you have space for a home library idea or are working with a designated reading corner, these areas are ideal for a pop of personality. "Libraries are a great confidence zone because there are so many elements to play with — color palette, pattern, lighting, and millwork," says Sarah.

Play with scale in design by incorporating an oversized shelving unit or splurge on that elegant patterned rug that felt too bold for the living room. But "Only diverge from your home’s palette within reason in these spaces," warns Sarah. "A home's style still needs to be consistent and have the same heartbeat running throughout."

If you are worried about coordinating paint colors throughout a home, start but dialing up the intensity of a specific color or pattern used elsewhere to push the envelope. For example, if other spaces in your home use blue, try a bold, high-gloss navy in your home library or reading space.

3. Entryways

Last, but certainly not least, designers say that any entryway idea or mudroom is the perfect confidence zone. "I like to try out unique designs in entryways because they are not task rooms, meaning you can really curate a specific mood or ambiance," says Crystal.

An entryway is the first impression of your home, so why not use it to show off your style? Make a statement on walls with a unique material or wallpaper application — a fabric panel or a custom mural, perhaps? Or you can use lighting and decor, like entryway rugs, to highlight this often overlooked space.

Plus, once again, entryways are typically small, "So you can go wild and feel comfortable knowing it'll only be a small dose of wild," says Crystal.

Redefining these spaces as 'confidence zones' makes bold design less intimidating. Next thing you know, you'll be mixing marbles proudly in the kitchen.

As many British rom-com lovers will be well aware by now, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy has hit theaters. And although we may mourn the fact that Bridget has moved out of her iconic Borough Market apartment, we can't deny she always deserved better — and better, she got.

So, how do you capture a personality as fabulously frazzled as Bridget's in a home? With a bright yellow kitchen, whimsical patterned wallpapers, and an assortment of vintage furniture. "It's wonderful chaos," set director Penny Crawford and production designer Kave Quinn describe to me as we talk about their work on the latest (and last) installment of the Bridget Jones story. "It's a place of life, color, and vibrancy to raise her children."

Whether you've made it to the cinema already, or you've watched the trailer on repeat in anxious anticipation, I have no doubt this cottage-core-meets-vintage-chic-style home is about to create a wave of interior design trends, so I sat down with the creative minds behind it all, to discover what went into building our beloved Bridget's perfectly imperfect home.

Diving straight in, set decorator Penny Crawford tells me that, "The biggest goal was to have the bones of the home be an obvious blend of Marc's more traditional and serious side and Bridget's fun and playful side. This led to a mix of traditional and eclectic styles, with moments of contemporary trends and designs in the set."

If vintage furniture, bold colors, wallpapers, and patterns weren't already a hot trend right now, they surely would be after this movie. Marc's traditionalism clashes perfectly with Bridget's whimsy, creating a home that feels lived-in and storied.

And there are subtle stories woven into its design, too. Take the green Foret wallpaper by Nina Campbell that we get a glimpse of in Bridget's bedroom, for example. You may or may not remember the striped walls in Bridget's parent's house in the first movie (you may have been distracted by Christmas jumpers, though) — well, that was also a Nina Campbell wallpaper. "Even though Bridget would hate to admit it, there is a little bit of her mother in her style," shares Kave Quinn, the movie's production designer.

And while there is plenty of design inspiration to steal from Bridget's bedroom, the real showstopper has to be the kitchen. That bright, yellow, sunny, happy kitchen.

"Pink, green, and yellow were the primary colors in the set's palette," explains Kave. "Not only do they complement Bridget well, but they speak to the youthful and creative side of her personality." Besides, who doesn't love a yellow kitchen idea?

And there was a lot of back and forth over the specific shade of yellow that was used. "We went through a lot of paint color testing to bring Bridget and the house to life," Kave continues. "Though we knew we wanted yellow as our kitchen paint color, it ended up being a much brighter yellow than it comes across due to the film's filter."

But then there is the rest of the space. The mismatched dining chairs, the green tiles on the backsplash, and retro pendant lights all make for a cozy kitchen that feels truly lived in. However, the effortless look did not necessarily come about so effortlessly.

"We spent hours scouting salvage yards, eBay, and second-hand furniture stores to find authentic items to use throughout the home," says Penny. The wooden flooring is made of sourced panels, and the kitchen countertop is real marble."You just can't get away with cutting corners on those details," adds Kave. In fact, the dining table is actually Kave's. They brought it to set to try out and ended up loving it so much that it stayed in the film — paint marks and all.

The lesson here is that, much like the building of the set, perfecting that real lived-in aesthetic in your home takes invested time and care.

Both Kave and Penny agree that Bridget's bedroom and adjoining bathroom may just take the cake as their favorite rooms in the home, and the stained glass pocket door alone has completely won me over.

"It is antique glass that we had built into the door and sealed with leading, so there is nothing fake about it," Kave tells me. The pocket door provides the obvious practical function of separating the two rooms, but its sliding function brings movement and flow to the space. "Not only was the pocket door addition great for filming, but the hidden stained glass detail felt like a beautiful way to yet again showcase Bridget's fun and creative side."

It's all in the details. And oh! Is that a sage green mushroom lamp I spot on her mid-century modern dresser. I never thought I'd be pinning Bridget Jones' home as inspiration for my own, but here we are.

Adding character to your home can come in all different shapes and sizes — but my favorite way lately is through this timber-slatted wavy room divider that's gone viral on social media.

And after digging into the design a bit more, I realized it's incredibly reminiscent of a classic screen style from the 1930s, proving that the playful and stylish piece can work across both vintage and contemporary aesthetics. Of the original design, Anthony Barzilay Freund, editorial director at 1stDibs, says, "The modernity, simplicity, surface patina, and striking sculptural silhouette of the room divider all lend the screen a timeless appeal that is perfectly in sync with today’s decorating trends.”

Of the more contemporary design, Anthony Barzilay Freund explains that, "The form of this screen is taken from Alvar Aalto’s 1936 design for his Screen 100, an early example of organic modernism that also demonstrated many of the streamlined ideals of the concurrent Art Deco period."

As time went on, many screens were designed to emulate Aalto’s iconic design, including both the minimalist style in Aden Wang's video, as well as the now highly popular examples by Baumann Fils et Cie that first caught my eye on 1stDibs.

"Created in the 1940s, Baumman Fils et Cie is more widely found today than the period Aalto examples and more accessibly priced," explains Anthony. "Baumman Fils et Cie was a French company based in a Paris suburb, who were in business between 1921 through 1969. The company specializes in creating rolling and folding window blinds as well as garage doors. Its expertise in crafting slatted items that were durable and flexible lent itself perfectly to the creation of this paravent, or screen."

As this room divider takes on a more contemporary design, the warmth and texture of the wood remain, allowing it to blend seamlessly into a multitude of design styles, whether that's Japandi living rooms or creative home office spaces.

Anthony says this wavy wooden accent piece, "Stands out because of its modernity and functionality. Though incredibly simple in form and without any true decoration, this screen is striking thanks to the beauty of the wood tambour construction and the gently undulating form, which could be curved to suit any space."

The wooden material is the characteristic that truly makes the divider endlessly versatile when decorating. To style the look, I'd recommend either embracing a wood-drenched aesthetic, or making it a 'stand-out' moment by picking a paint color that pairs well with the natural wood finish.

Incorporating a partition, whether it is a vintage furniture score or a DIY room divider idea, brings a room to life; and in this case, a bit of history as well.

One of my favorite design revelations as of late, is the fact that curtains needn't be reserved solely for covering windows. Beautiful fabric and drapery can be styled elsewhere in the home, adding softness, texture, and a point of interest — and putting curtains behind the bed (even when there isn't a window) is the best place to do it.

But it's not just about the style. "Functionally, it can help to dampen sound and provide some insulation from fluctuating temperatures, both of which are important for creating a comfortable space for sleep and relaxation," adds Bailey Todd, owner and principal designer at Illinois-based White Cliff Studio.

1. Create an enveloping warmth

A trend I'm seeing from designers lately, particularly when it comes to more neutral bedroom ideas, is to find unique ways to add warmth to the space through layering natural textures and tones. If your eye is drawn to more minimalist designs and serene atmospheres, a billowing curtain behind the bed achieves exactly that — as seen in this cozy bedroom by interior designer Tatjana von Stein.

To achieve this look, the fold of your curtain matters. "The ripples and draping adds softness or richness," explains Los Angeles-based interior designer Victoria Holly. "If you have a more modern or minimalist interior space, then we recommend ripple fold drapes."

2. Turn it into art with a unique drape

But considering curtains behind a bed don't need to move along tracks like curtains over windows do, you can get a bit more artistic with the way they drape. The Castlecore design trend has been big this year, and the way you drape curtains behind your bed is an easy way to add this sense of drama and glamour to your space.

If you've always dreamed of a canopy bed, you can create the feel of one for much less with curtains behind the bed. For the space above, London-based interior architect Emily Pun says, "I started with the idea of elevating my bedroom to make it feel more like a palace or hotel. Ultimately, though, I wanted to add softness to the space. Personally, I’m not a fan of headboards, as they tend to go out of style quickly, no matter what you do with them. So, I wanted something more flexible and cost-effective. This setup took just a day to achieve, and I think it’s a very economical way to add coziness to the room!"

And don't we all want to make our bedrooms feel like hotels? Relaxing, but with a touch of luxury. "I left the pleat at the top of the canopy because I didn’t want it to look too flat," adds Emily — the draping effect of the fabric helps soften the room while catching the eye in a visually interesting way.

5. Add softness to a space

Interior designer Brittney Hart, one-half of New York-based studio HUSBAND WIFE, says she loves styling curtains behind beds. "We have used this strategy in a couple of projects as it's such a nice way to add texture and warmth."

"Anytime you use fabric on a wall, that texture is going to make a space feel softer because your eye knows that it feels different than a hard wall, without having to touch it," says interior designer Bailey Todd.

And your choice of fabric can make a big difference in the way this design idea makes the space feel. "Materials like linen, cotton, or even velvet can diffuse light and sound, adding to the room’s overall sense of calm," says Nina Lichtenstein. "For an extra cozy feel, layering sheer panels with heavier drapery adds versatility and a lush, cocoon-like effect."

Adding drapery or curtains behind the bed is more than just a decorative flourish — it provides an opportunity to personalize your bedroom in a way that feels intentional, design-forward, and more comfortable. "Whether your goal is to soften the space, introduce texture, or make a bold statement, this versatile feature can redefine the atmosphere of your room," says Nina.

Ready to implement this idea in your own space. Just remember, "Once the drapery is installed, the bed will need to come out further from the wall so it doesn’t crush it and ruin the look," adds Bailey Todd, "So be sure you account for several inches less space at the foot of the bed."

Nothing gives your home a flirtatious flair like adding a little bit of fabric and fun to your favorite furniture pieces. And how might one do this, you ask? With an old-fashioned design detail that's been given a contemporary twist, of course. It's time to take your skirts out of the closet and stick them straight on your table.

While skirted tables may initially make you think of your mother's old fabric-heavy, round entry table (it made Livingetc's content director Lucy Searle shudder a little bit), the classic design has been reinvented for 2025. Adding a bit of fabric can soften an entire room, while also introducing a touch of character and plenty of charm.

Skirted tables may not be a new revelation, but I've just seen one interior designer approach them in such a cool way — a checkered pattern that pops in the otherwise pared-back space. So, whether you have a console table that could use a bit more character, or you've been looking for ways to stylishly conceal a bit of clutter, here's how this designer did this skirted furniture trend well.

Laura Krey of New York City-based Laura Krey Design added a simple skirt to a timber-clad home office in her Wycoff Avenue Cottage Project, and my eye was immediately drawn to the detail.

"Skirting has been used in more traditional rooms forever, but what’s fresh now is the appearance of table skirts, albeit with more contemporary fabric, in a modern-leaning room," she says. "For instance, I love a graphically-patterned fabric used as a skirt."

The checkerboard print of the table skirt introduces a playful warmth to the otherwise minimalist design, instantly bringing visual interest to the room. This frilly decorative detail feeds into the latest trend towards creating more eclectic and personalized spaces, and while ruffled bedding is all the rage right now, there's no 'one way' to embrace a skirted table. In fact, it pays to be a bit creative, to ensure the look still feels fresh and modern. Whether that's opting for a more uniform box pleat over the standard ruffle, your choice of fabric, or even where you're putting it, is up to you.

And a table skirt gives a nice finish to any hard edge or underutilized space. You can play with scale and fullness to evoke a bit of playfulness, but a skirted table can also be used throughout the home. On a tall console table lining your entryway, a tailored skirt can read strongly and cleanly, a good visual when entering the home. A lighter and airier table skirt fabric will introduce a more organic and natural aesthetic to a room, giving a lightness to social or high-traffic areas of the home — perfect for kitchen sink skirts and office spaces.

If a table in your home is in need of an easy, chic upgrade, it may be as simple as throwing on a skirt.

I'm a renter right now, but, with a fine arts degree under my belt, so you can bet my (future) kitchen will be colorful, which is why I was so excited to discover lava stone countertops.

Now, if you're wondering what lava stone is, it's a gorgeous glossy, glazed volcanic rock countertop surface that designers are saying could replace more traditional kitchen countertop materials like granite and marble. It can also be glazed in almost any color. Lucy McSweeney, design assistant at Kate Feather Kitchen Designs, says, "The huge range of color and edge details available, along with stone thickness and size means it can perfectly sit in any setting."

But with so many different colors to choose from, it can be hard to know where to begin. And just like with paint, once you commit to a kitchen color idea, you then have to know how to style it. As usual, it's a dance between balance and contrast, but to put your mind at ease, I asked a few interior designers for their advice on styling lava stone countertops. Whether you opt for a vibrant green or muted mocha, here are four ideas to inspire you.

1. Go For a Bold Pop of Color

An obvious drawcard of lava stone countertops is the various bold and brilliant colorways it comes in. "Lave stone can serve as an elegant accent in an otherwise plan design," says Kate Feather's Lucy McSweeney. No two pieces of this surface are like any another, and "the small variations in the surfaces reflect the artisan effort involved in its creation," adds Lucy.

You can either embrace this colorful countertop trend completely by drenching your kitchen in a bright shade, or "complement bold hues with neutral kitchen cabinet colors and walls so that your surface shines and stands out," adds Jennifer Rogers, interior designer at BK Kitchen and Bath.

"To create an integrated design, echo the colors of the countertop in small accents," says Jennifer. For example, the door and trim in the kitchen shown above mirror the teal tones of the Pyrolave Architecture lava stone countertop, creating a harmonious look throughout the space.

2. Mix and Match Textures

Though lava stone countertops may appear shiny and smooth from far away, its texture is one of the main appeals. Up close, lava stone countertops have a unique cracked texture that forms as part of the firing process — though this is later glossed over so you don't have to worry about rough workbenches.

But, when it comes to styling, "Including materials like wood or metal emphasizes the stone's natural texture while simultaneously helping make the glossy finish linger longer in the room," says Jennifer.

In the kitchen above, antiqued brass kitchen cabinetry that almost looks wood-like has been paired with a vibrant lime green lava stone countertop. These two materials play off one another's sheen, creating a look that feels dramatic yet balanced.

Another way to emphasize the high-gloss finish of lava stone countertops is to play with different kitchen lighting ideas. "Incorporate warm lighting to highlight its unique and polished glossy sheen," adds Jennifer.

3. Lean Into the High Gloss Finish

High gloss and lacquered finishes have been the latest interior design trend no one saw coming, and lava stone countertops are an easy way to lean into it. Rather than making the color the focal point, focus on emphasizing the finish.

"In the navy blue kitchen [shown above], we took advantage of the wide color range available and matched the worktop to the color of the cabinets," explains Lucy. "The two-color palette for the kitchen meant that the bright, vivid blue could appear elegant against the white walls, rather than overpowering among other colors."

Decorate with colors that go with blue and pieces like potted plants and table lamps, and you'll get just the right balance of playful color and effortless elegance.

4. Keep It Tonal and Timeless

Don't worry if bold colors are not your thing! You can still incorporate a lava stone countertop, even if you tend to favor more minimalist kitchens designs. The gorgeous mocha brown lave stone countertop in the kitchen shown above is one of my favorite variations.

Lucy says, "We opted for a neutral design in our showroom. The mushroom-color worktop catches on the darker undertones of the wood in the island without overwhelming the design with too many patterns."

And as for styling this more subdued hue, Jennifer adds, "Use minimalistic decor like ceramic vases or understated fixtures to elevate the artistic feel without affecting the color of the countertop."

"Lava stone countertops are an extremely versatile material and can be styled to suit any design," says Lucy. And considering it's more durable than granite and marble, and comes in almost infinite colors, I have a sneaky suspicion you're about to see this candy-colored modern kitchen idea everywhere.

This past year we saw a complete leopard print takeover in both the world of fashion and in interior design. Then there is of course tortoiseshell, and you can't forget the cow print craze, but as we enter into 2025 there appears to be a new animal print that has caught the attention of the design world: zebra.

I know what you may be thinking; zebra print in the home conjures images of maximalist overload. But when done well, this latest pattern trend can be playful as well as stylish. Interior designer and architect at Coates Design Architects and Interiors, Matthew Coates, says "Zebra print is risky — in a good way! It strikes the perfect balance between bold and timeless. You can really make a statement with zebra print."

And believe it or not, there are plenty of ways to incorporate this interior design trend, from gorgeous marbled wallpapers and wood grains to abstract zebra print rugs and upholstered furniture. The print might seem like a blast from the past, but the reimagined look has a chic new feeling. Here is everything you need to know about zebra print.

Why are we seeing this pattern pop in our homes now? Other than being a natural extension of other animal print obsessions, like the leopard trend revival and fawn decor, Matthew Coates explains that it has a lot to do with people wanting to inject more personality and character into home design.

"With the rise of maximalism in interior design and an interest in nature-inspired designs, zebra print adds a dramatic and organic touch that feels fresh but still classic," he says.

As for styling this eclectic look, the dining room demonstrates how you can create a statement by drenching a space in an abstract variation of the pattern. Elin Jigbring, content and social media manager at wall mural brand Belarte Studio, explains that their Vibrant Veneer wall mural "works best as a focal point in a room, and we would recommend using it on all four walls to create a statement."

"Incorporating zebra print in areas like dining rooms or bedrooms can create a timeless yet modern aesthetic," she continues, adding that "Complementing it with either contemporary or minimalist design decor and natural elements will enhance its visual impact."

And it can be used just about everywhere — "For a small powder room as well as a large living room with tall ceilings," she says.

When it comes to mixing patterns, this is where using zebra print can become quite risky.... but as long as there’s a sense of balance it can work. Matthew says "I often think of it like fashion and you wouldn't want to pair a striped shirt with a polka dot tie. It’s all about finding harmony, whether that’s through a shared color scheme or contrasting scales."

For example, zebra print pairs wonderfully with solid colors, or as an accent in a color drenched room. Even some bolder, organic patterns, like florals can work if the colors are complementary. "Adding a pop of color can make the whole look feel intentional and polished," adds Matthew.

Not every dinner is a formal event. In fact, my favorite dinner parties are usually the ones that are low-stress and in a casual setting. But that is not to say that you cannot still wow your guests with a well-laid table. Here are some necessities for a casual dinner:

• The Plates: For a casual three-course dinner, you typically include a salad/appetizer plate, dinner plate, and bread plate. A charger plate is unnecessary, "unless you want to add it in as additional décor to your tablescape," says Mary.
• Utensils: Include a dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, and butter knife. You only include a soup spoon if needed. "Some people like to include a salad/appetizer knife as well, but I rarely do," says Mary. In casual settings the fork and knife can be place together, or placed (as usual) with the fork on the left and the knife and spoon on the right.
• Linens: "Linen napkins are definitely the go-to. The simplest yet still chic place setting features a linen napkin," says stylist and tablescape designer, Liz Barbatelli. You can either fold the napkin, or simply place it on the plate with a ring (napkin decor is always a chic idea). As for table linens, Mary suggests a placemat over a full tablecloth for a more casual table setting.
• Glassware: On a casual table you only need a water glass and wine glass. Mary says "one wine glass will do, even if you offer red and white wine. Oftentimes your guests will bring whatever cocktail they were drinking prior to dinner with them to the table, which is perfectly acceptable in my book."

"If you want to set a very basic table, you just need a dinner fork, dinner knife, soup spoon (if needed), water glass, and a napkin. This setting is more about functionality, simplicity, and approachability," says Mary. Ultimately, in a causal table setting there is a bit more room to have fun.

"Arrange utensils in the order of use, starting from the outermost edge—forks to the left, knives and spoons to the right, with dessert utensils above the plate," says Jamila.
• Nice Glassware: Formal tables should be set with a water glass, wine glass, and champagne glass. You can even "provide dessert wine or brandy in appropriate glasses and coffee in coffee or demitasse cups and saucers only to those who are indulging,' says Liz.
• Linens: White linens are considered the most formal, but colored ones can work as well. A crisp linen napkin is folded and set on the dinner plate.
• Florals: A floral centerpiece is a must at a formal table setting.

"This trend celebrates the rugged beauty and timeless myth of medieval craftsmanship, transporting to a time defined by its architectural drama, artisanal ingenuity, and rich materiality. At its core, 'Castlecore' is a call to envelop modern life in the grandeur and romance of centuries past — a sentiment that has stirred imaginations across the ages and is doing so again."

So, how can an aesthetic so grounded in the grandeur of the past fit into contemporary design trends today? Below, I break down the main characteristics of 'Castlecore', and explain how, when done right, it can actually be much more stylish than it sounds.

So, what is Castlecore?

"Medieval is having a major moment," Pinterest shared in their latest trend report. "In 2025, Gen Z and millennials will take home decor inspiration from ancient castles, while fashion and accessories will be gothic inspired. It’s a comeback of the highest order."

Castlecore has a lot to do with the interior design world's deep fascination with moody and intricate designs, and it's certainly not a new thing. "Historically, the Gothic Revival of the 18th and 19th centuries signaled a similar longing for the past," explains Christiane. "In the early 20th century, medievalism emerged again through the Arts and Crafts Movement (an interior design movement devoted to handcraftsmanship and the inherent beauty of materials echoing the medieval artisan’s commitment to beauty and utility)."

Put simply, the emergence of Castlecore can be viewed as a modern iteration of these design movements — a nostalgic antidote to today's fast-paced technology and sleek, contemporary designs. "As with all cyclical trends, Castlecore is a response to the zeitgeist," adds Christiane. "Just as the Gothic Revival countered the industrial age, and the Arts and Crafts Movement reacted to mechanization, today’s Castlecore reflects a desire to reclaim romance and individuality in our personal spaces."

As technology continues to speed up, and we increasingly look for ways to make our homes more tech-free (like finding ways to hide your tv amongst artwork on our walls), people are craving that sense of nostalgic romance.

"The modern revival of Castlecore speaks to our collective yearning for escapism and nostalgia, particularly in the face of a hyper-digitized and transient culture," says Christiane. "In the hands of today’s tastemakers, Castlecore is less about retreating into history and more about reinterpreting it for a new age of authenticity and permanence."

The trend reflects the wider embrace of maximalism in interior design, where layered interiors replace stark minimalism and vintage and antique furniture is favored over newer pieces, "helping to create homes that feel soulful and storied," says Christiane.

How to Style 'Castlecore'

Now for the fun part: how do you style the Castlecore aesthetic in your home, in a way that feels curated and contemporary?

For most of us, renovating your home to look like a castle (or renovating an actual castle if you're Christiane) is not an outwardly easy thing to replicate. However, it is easier than you think. Castlecore invites designs that are steeped in texture, lived-in muted metals with plenty of patina, and styling that tells a story. "It’s less about literal imitation and more about an inspired reimagining of medieval elegance," says Christiane.

The drama of stone walls, dark woods, and metal accents are quick ways to recall the stoic beauty of a castle’s great hall. Though it is perhaps impractical to make structural changes, Christiane says "faux-stone finishes or plaster textures (like adding the bas-relief trend) on your walls, can evoke a similar effect."

Texture is going to play a pivotal role in perfecting this look — think heavy tapestries, velvet upholstery, and layered drapery. Rebecca Goesling, a trend forecaster and the director of design at Goesling Group says "Any spots that highlight metals and textiles are prime opportunities to introduce the trend. Metal candlesticks, vases, and silverware are all ripe for ornamentation free from a big commitment."

On a bigger scale, "reupholstering dining chairs in rich tapestries or introducing mural walls can turn a blank canvas into a Castlecore showpiece," she adds.

Lighting is another staple when recreating the Castlecore mood — think chandeliers, iron candelabras, and lantern-style sconces, softened by the glimmer of textured or colored glass.

And of course, there's color. Rebecca says "Ivory, honey, and espresso create a warm backdrop for rich reds of crimson, oxblood and garnet. The result is a palette that is equal parts romantic and mysterious."

Rather than applying these colors to an accent wall or a piece of decor, you can try color-drenching a space for an elegant and enveloping effect. And while it's a task that tends to be one of the less luxurious to-dos, I love adding hand-crafted details, especially around the holidays. Jasmine Dowling is an Australian artist and creative who is, frankly, a genius when it comes to chic DIY crafts. When I saw her studded Christmas wrapping paper trick, I knew I had to try the look for myself. What drew me to this Christmas decorating idea was how simple the steps were, and how elegant the final result looked. The best combination, if you ask me.

I never thought I would be racing to stud anything after a regrettable stint adding studs to every pair of denim shorts I owned back in 2013, but with the trend back in fashion in a big way right now, it's about time I found a way to incorporate it into my home decor and styling. I started by buying all the supplies listed above, opting for both round and square silver stud stickers, and a roll of black velvet ribbon to keep things chic. From there, all you have to do is wrap your presents as you normally would with the brown wrapping paper, and start embellishing them with the stud stickers. Jasmine says she first tested sticking the studs randomly across the wrapping paper, but decided that a more uniform approach looked better, and I agree.

If you are like me and love a large, decorative ribbon, I recommend tying the bow around the present first. This way you have room to tie the perfect Christmas bow, and you save studs by not placing them in areas of the wrapping paper that will be covered up by ribbon. Tack a beautiful gift tag onto the package, and et volia! Your presents are instantly elevated.

"I love the use of warmth and texture on the table," says Nate while showcasing his woven placemats, which he says he likes to source from his travels or marketplaces like Etsy.

He even goes as far as to say he usually steers clear of tablecloths altogether, opting instead for just a stylish woven placemat on his table.

2. "Cloth napkins always"

Cloth napkins are a classic choice to elevate your place settings, and they add that extra bit of soft texture to the table (which is often dominated by hard shapes).

Recently, they shared their 'ins and outs' when it comes to what kitchen trends will rule in 2025, and honestly, it was such a refreshing take — trend predictions can be so... predictable these days.

Each of the four ideas feels like a fresh take on kitchen design; a natural evolution of past favorites. From textured glass to rich, warm woods, there is a little something for everyone on this list.

1. Textured Glass

In 2024, homeowners and designers have grown increasingly comfortable incorporating textured glass into their designs — especially the ribbed or fluted variations. "Textured glass brings a perfect balance of style and function to the kitchen," says Kailee. "We love seeing it in upper cabinets or, more recently, in island drawers. It’s an excellent way to break up the monotony of solid cabinetry while adding an element of interest and refinement to the space."

Texture design is always a sure way to boost visual appeal, but Kailee believes we will be moving on from the very modern look of ribbed glass to a more organic texture, like a waved design or Flemish glass. "We’re seeing a shift toward softer, more natural textures," she explains. "Glass with subtle patterns, like Arctic, Flemish, or Cathedral glass, is becoming increasingly popular."

These styles feel less structured and bring an artisanal, handcrafted element to the design — a natural evolution from the once-popular ribbed glass.

In the kitchen, textured glass creates a layer of visual depth and character. It is a practical way to showcase items without fully exposing them, as clear glass might. Even muted colored glass can elevate a cabinet door or kitchen window paneling. "Plus, it’s easier to maintain than clear glass, while still achieving a curated look," adds Kailee.

The best news? You don't even need to replace your current glass-fronted cabinets — there are plenty of films on the market you can stick straight on top to achieve the same look.

2. Unlacquered Metals

Kailee also predicts that kitchen hardware trends will move away from polished finishes towards unlacquered metal styles. "What this means is that your metals will patina, giving them that more antique and lived-in feel," she explains.

With the recent resurgence of copper interior trends in the kitchen as well as other interesting metals beyond just stainless steel and gold, this feels like a natural next step. Copper is a stylish example of a material that will age with time resulting in a rustic patinaed look.

These finishes can be introduced through larger moments like the faucet, or if you want a smaller commitment to try out the trend try incorporating antiqued metal vases, or unlacquered cabinet knobs and pulls.

3. Zellige Tiles

Kitchens with Zellige tiles stand out thanks to the tile's striking tactile quality. By no means a new trend, Kailee says they're sticking around for 2025, as Zellige tile "offers tons of options for color, shape, and pattern, making it possible to create unique designs," while "Its handcrafted imperfections give it depth."

But in 2025, designers will be getting more creative with how it’s used, whether that's backsplashes or more unexpected applications like baseboards and trims. Zellige works beautifully as a smaller focal point — think a backsplash behind the stove, or even as a statement wall, and "It can also be used in small, thoughtful ways, like wrapping the base of a kitchen island or adding a touch of pattern to an otherwise simple space," adds Kailee.

Plaid-inspired patterns are particularly interesting right now. Rich maroons, deep browns, and jewel tones are having a moment, especially in moodier spaces. On the other hand, subtle monochromatic patterns can bring sophistication to brighter kitchens.

4. Warm-Stained Wood

Past kitchen designs were all about white oak wood. The soft, light wood was part of the sleek, quiet luxury trend catering to open-concept layouts and minimalist kitchen ideas. But, as we move into 2025, design trends are shifting towards something that feels a bit more welcoming and lived-in. As a result, Kailee says "We will see darker woods and wood stains grow in popularity. Think a lot of deep, richly colored woods and just warmer-toned wood finishes in general."

The way we use wood may also change in 2025, as well. The more people play around with pattern and texture, the more room there is for experimentation and creating unique designs. "I think we should expect to see exotic woods popping up in interiors as well like burled wood and zebra," says Kailee.

Finding the perfect nightstand to set the scene (and store your things) in your bedroom or guest room is not always an easy thing to do, especially if you're after a particular style at a particular price point. But that's not say it's impossible. In fact, the perfect nightstand might be hiding in plain sight... at least it was for the professional DIYer behind this inspiring IKEA hack.

Digital creator and expert furniture flipper, Kristen Coulson, turned the classic white HEMNES cabinet into a vintage-meets-modern nightstand that anyone with "designer taste, but an IKEA budget" would dream of. She wanted to create a piece that would stand out as a warm and chic accent in her space, and, armed with a sander, wood stain, and playful round bobbin detail, she was able to create a pair of custom nightstands that look seriously stylish.

Kristen Culson (@something.renewed) says the inspiration for this DIY came from designer-looking nightstands and furniture pieces. "Particularly the Jenny Lind style that have round elements," she adds. "I love this look and I thought something simple like adding the round half ball could give a similar vibe, on a DIY budget."

Kristen started with the base — the best-selling IKEA HEMNES nightstand— which she sanded down to the original wood in order to stain it in a color of her choosing. "These nightstands had the typical white IKEA factory finish on them. I knew this line of IKEA bedroom furniture was made of solid pine, so I wondered… what would happen if I sanded it all off!?" says Kristen.

Luckily, the wood grain underneath was a beautiful base that she could work with. Kristen then stained both the nightstands and the wooden balls in a rich walnut color that gave the pieces a vintage, worn look. If you want a bit more color and to keep the chic vintage look, vintage-inspired paint colors would also work a treat for this DIY.

After the stain dried, Kristen glued the half-round spheres to the sides. "I used an orbital sander, Minwax stain, polyurethane, wood glue, half wooden spheres from Amazon, stain applicator, and a brush for applying topcoat," she shares. "I also purchased new knobs on Amazon."

"I absolutely love the look the renovation gave these nightstands," she says.

Once you decide to begin the IKEA HEMNES hack, there are a few practical tips to consider. "Stain the wooden balls beforehand," advises Kristen. "They’re easier to glue down after being stained! My biggest tip is to have patience when sanding off all the IKEA white paint Use a piece of sandpaper to get in the cracks so every trace of it is gone!"

As for finding and styling a pair of nightstands that works for you, the options are endless. Though Kristen used the HEMNES nightstands from IKEA, any bedside table could be your starting point. "I recommend finding your nightstands second-hand or anywhere that comes at a relatively cheap cost," says Kristen. Once the renovation process begins, the chic, elevated look will follow.

Anything a bit artsy, a bit whimsical, and very stylish is what I want to include in my home. I have always been a fan of Fornasetti, dreaming of one day owning a curved cabinet silkscreened with their iconic images of Italian architecture. But a big-ticket, art-meets-design investment piece like that is hardly something you buy on a whim. Fornasetti is an atelier internationally recognized for the design and decoration of timeless pieces of furniture, accessories, and porcelain. Barnaba says, "My father's most recurring themes also include the sun, playing cards, harlequins, hands, and self-portraits. Yet it is his most famous theme that gave him the idea of coining the Tema e Variazioni series in 1952: the enchanting face of a woman that will consistently lure him back to her over his artistic career. The face with the hypnotic gaze, the original inspiration for this series, is that of Lina Cavalieri, an internationally renowned artist who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries."

Her enigmatic look has become the centerpiece of Piero’s longest-lasting theme to such an extent that there are currently nearly 400 variations. This artwork is still reproduced by Barnaba, primarily for a series of everyday items, including not only chinaware but furniture and home accessories. "Suggestive, mysterious, seductive, with a mustache, red lips, glasses, or a bee on her nose: however it is reinvented, Lina's face remains unmistakable. An icon, an object of desire," says Barnaba.

On a crisp evening in September, some of the best makers and names in New York’s Hudson Valley gathered at the home of Rachel and Nick Cope, the couple behind Calico Wallpaper. The event celebrated the launch of their latest collection, an ethereal series of silk-inspired prints, some of which adorned the walls of their own interiors. But on display was something else: success.

For over a decade, Rachel and Nick steadily built a reputation that many makers dream of building; they don’t just make wallpaper, they make art. Their wallpapers take root in handmade designs that never repeat, envisioned as wall murals instead of traditional rolls. Every art panel can be custom-fit to your space—in a way, they are all one of a kind.

“Typically every collection starts with an original artwork,” said Rachel during a recent visit at her studio in New Chatham, New York where the Brooklyn-born brand established a new home base.

From the beginning, the bespoke nature of their work catapulted Rachel and Nick into the upper echelons of interior design. Their murals often pop up in the homes of people who win Oscars or own major companies. They collaborate with some of the brightest names in our business, from Faye Toogood to Daniel Arsham and Colin King. Together, they’ve launched textiles, dabbled in furniture, and even printed designs on chocolate bars.

And to think, it all started amid a tropical cyclone?

It was 2012, after Hurricane Sandy flooded NYC’s most exposed neighborhoods when Nick and Rachel made their first move. With the city virtually shut down and little to do but shelter inside (Nick’s small contracting company was on hold, and Rachel’s art therapy post gave her paid leave), Rachel tried her hand at an art project. As an outlet, she experimented with the ancient craft of paper marbling, floating natural pigments on a liquid surface, creating organic and mesmerizing effects that transferred onto paper.

Rachel did hundreds of tests, and eventually, Nick scanned her designs, turning them into expressive wall murals for his real estate projects. Later, they turned the concept into a proper—and immediately popular—product.

“Wallpaper was just starting to regain broader relevance with interior designers, and the non-repeating murals that we offered were truly unique,” recalls Nick of the timely interior design trend. “The motifs we initially launched were craft-focused and baroque–something different in a period where minimalism was the dominant style.” They followed up their popular debut with marbled patterns that incorporated metallics and then released something different, Aurora, a meditative series of gradients inspired by vistas of distant lands.

“It became an instant hit,” says Nick, having struck gold for a second time. “It was interesting to see that two very different concepts could be back-to-back hits, and it was at that point that we realized that embracing craft–both by hand and digitally–was the key to our brand.”

Life happened fast, professionally and personally. Rachel and Nick’s first child arrived in 2015, prompting an expansion to a separate office in Red Hook. Their second child arrived three years later, prompting a move to a Brooklyn Victorian in Prospect Park South. They eventually opened their first physical showroom (which they share with Stellar Works) in Tribeca.

But another life event, the COVID-19 pandemic, led them to rethink full-time city life.

The couple had purchased a weekend house upstate around the same time they opened their first office, which made the Hudson Valley (with its rich history of makers and artists) a sensible place to relocate during the global event, one that shifted the very nature of Rachel’s practice.

At her upstate art studio, located beneath Calico Wallpaper’s new design offices, Rachel (who has a BFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master's degree in art therapy from the School of Visual Arts) is free to explore even more ideas. Liberated from the "frenetic pace" of city life, she now has more space (physically and mentally) for larger-scale artworks, often with more natural materials and methods than before. These new projects aren't always intended as wallpaper—although, she admits, most of her work ends up in their growing collection.

That’s true of a recent release plucked from an impromptu painting session with Rachel’s children while they all had the flu. Entirely unplanned, Rachel experimented with jewel tones and deep colors she hadn’t worked with before. A snippet from that free-spirited session resulted in a playful series full of massive brush strokes called Ensemble that taps into the inner child.

Of course, while each wallpaper often begins with a physical piece of art, it’s not as easy as clicking "scan" and "print" on a computer. The end result can take years to digitize, finalize, and roll out. After Rachel fiddles with art tests (small paintings sampling different mediums, brush sizes, and papers) she sends them upstairs where Calico’s design office (with three designated designers) expands each test's dimensions in more ways than one.

“We scan those, mock them up digitally, and try different filters and digital processes,” explains Alexandra Karamallis, Calico Wallpaper’s Design Director. “It’s truly always different from one collection to the next, totally depending on what the artwork itself is.” After lengthy experimentation, Rachel paints one final artwork (she’s been doing this so long she can picture almost anything at six times the scale). The team scans it once more, applying their chosen filters and effects to scalable prints.

And beyond her own art, Rachel’s intuition leads Calico to fascinating personal collections with fellow friends and designers, which has become one of their most popular endeavors.

“Moving from creating all of the collections myself to incorporating guest designers felt like a sea change for me personally and for the brand,” recalls Rachel of their first partnerships. “I admired so many of my collaborators for years before having the honor of working alongside them.” One of their first collaborations was Woodlands, channeling childhood memories of rural England with none other than British designer Faye Toogood, who brought with her a massive following–and endless new eyes for Calico Wallpaper’s brand.

While their inspiration can be global, their collections often remain personal, if not close to home. With Alchemy and Enchantment, two of their latest collections, Rachel tapped their newly formed roots in Ghent, working with Janene Ping, a longtime educator and puppeteer at The Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School. Located on a 900-acre farm upstate, the storied school helps students connect with the natural world and counts Rachel and Nick’s children as students (their new home is a short, idyllic walk away through farmland).

The beloved teacher has long produced dreamy silk tapestries for local and student theater productions, using all-natural dyes (think leaves, bark, flowers, and insects) to create evocative and watery prints, translated into large-scale murals (in some, you can even see the silky fibers in the print). Organic colorways like Turmeric, Walnut, and Marigold (yes, dyed with locally collected marigolds) conjure the "elemental dance between sun and earth," one of nature’s most steady relationships.

It speaks to the slower, more grounded rhythm of Rachel and Nick’s upstate life–where Rachel’s own artistic experiments aren’t an isolated perk. “Ironically, the move also helped Nick in his role to grow the business, even though we no longer had a central office,” says Rachel. “Having a slower pace of daily life with less of the distractions that come with city life made it easier for him to focus on the team and the organization of the company.”

Slowing down for Calico Wallpaper, of course, means a very different thing for Rachel and Nick. In the past few weeks alone they’ve launched a batch of thoughtful collections, including Unami, a new tulip tree-inspired series with artist and Lenape leader Joe Baker and a celestial-themed collection called Supernova with New York’s Studio DB.

Surrounded by nature in their new upstate universe, it appears the dreams for Calico aren’t exactly closer to earth–they’re downright stratospheric.

My family has always been a Thanksgiving weekend Christmas tree-decorating family. Once the Thanksgiving feast has been cleared, it's time for the Christmas tree to make its debut. However, there's always some dispute about where to put it, and more importantly, where not to.

Of course, where you place your Christmas tree may be consistent year after year. But if you want to switch things up this year or have recently moved home and are looking for the perfect spot, it's really important to know where to avoid putting a Christmas tree before it's decorated.

I asked interior designers and Christmas tree experts for the places they would never put a Christmas tree. This is what they told me. Number two's a shocker.

1. In cramped spaces

Whether faux or real, bringing those Christmas tree ideas to life is no small feat. Christmas decorator Patricia Derpinski, lead designer at New York City-based Hudson Holiday Decor says, "Avoid spots where the tree feels cramped, like narrow hallways or in front of heavy furniture that blocks its view."

Interior designer, Anna Tatsioni takes her advice a step further: "My ultimate advice is to think of your tree as a design element, not just a holiday decoration. It should complement your space, enhance your room's flow, and create a sense of wonder and warmth. Every home tells a story, and your Christmas tree is just another beautiful chapter in that narrative," she says.

Though it may look festive to have a miniature tree in your entryway or on the stairs, it is best to avoid high-traffic areas where they might get bumped. If you are a small-space dweller, this does not mean you should avoid incorporating a tree in your holiday decor altogether. Alternative Christmas trees for small spaces are a fabulously chic way to maximize room, or even the Balsam Hill Fifth Avenue flatback half Christmas tree could help make the most of your space.

Similarly don't put your tree in front of closet doors, even light switches.

2. Near heat sources

I know, I know, having a tree by your fireplace is a quintessential Christmas look. However, no matter what type of Christmas tree you have, heat is a potentially disastrous pairing (sorry, Santa!).

Anna Tatsioni, lead interior designer at Decorilla, says "I remember a charming Victorian home in Beacon Hill where the homeowner initially wanted to place her magnificent 8-foot Fraser fir right by the grand fireplace. As an experienced designer, I gently steered her away from that potentially disastrous location.

"Placing a live tree near an active heat source is like inviting a fire hazard to your holiday celebration. Trees dry out quickly, and the combination of open flames and brittle branches is a recipe for disaster. Safety and aesthetics must always dance together. I recommend keeping trees at least three to four feet from heat sources, ensuring they're not blocking crucial walkways or emergency exits," says Anna.

If you want to keep your Christmas decorating ideas cozy, Patricia says to "keep your tree at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, or any heat source, including vents — not just for safety reasons, but also to prevent live, fresh trees from drying out too quickly."

3. By windows

Windows are another classic background for Christmas tree placement — we all want to show off our trees to the neighborhood. But, of course, there are a few tips to make the most of this look. "If placing your tree near a window, make sure it’s not drafty or exposed to direct sunlight, as these conditions can shorten your live tree’s lifespan," says Patricia.

"Heat and strong sunlight can accelerate the drying process for a real Christmas tree, so make sure you’re not putting your tree in a window that receives direct sunlight," says Marsha Gray, executive director at the Real Christmas Tree Board.

Even stylish faux trees can fade their color more quickly when sitting in direct sun. To combat this, Marsha says to "avoid windows with southern exposure. They have the strongest sunlight."

Just like us, too much sun exposure is bad for a tree's health. However, windows can be a wonderful location if the tree’s glow is visible from both inside and outside — it adds a welcoming touch for anyone passing by.

Christmas trees can be expensive, so it is important to take care of them to ensure they last through the season. There may seem like a lot of things to avoid when planning your tree's home for the holidays, but there are many exciting things to consider as well.

"Placing your Christmas tree is an art form that extends far beyond the living room. While the living room remains the traditional centerpiece, I've created stunning displays in unexpected spaces," says Anna.

It is finally time to trim the tree; keep these three tips in mind to avoid any potential disasters while the family is in town.

So, you've been holding in a secret, right? A really big one. You're not actually a fan of ornaments come Christmastime. It's not a problem. There's a new trend we're noticing when it comes to decorating your tree this year, and it's actually quite chic. We're calling it the 'nearly naked' look, and it's all about focussing on lights, neutral colors, a few feature decorations that enhance the natural beauty of the Frazier fur.

Don't get me wrong, I typically love to decorate with red, green, and lots of colors at Christmas, but sometimes less is more; a subtle moment can sometimes light up a room in an otherwise completely unattainable way. And it seems celebrities and interior designers agree, with many adopting the Christmas decorating trend this year.

Renowned interior designer Rose Uniacke just installed a beautifully bare tree in Victoria Beckham's flagship store in London, that still oozes festive style though it's flaunting just lights and rugged foliage. (Michelle Pfeiffer's Christmas tree also rocks the trend.) Much like the barely-there tree trend, a 'nearly naked' tree adds warmth and verdant life to a room without overpowering it. It's the antithesis of what we might expect at this time of the year — a small sprinkle of lights, a sneaky ornament, a pared-back tree skirt, and that's all.

So why not flick the fuss this year, and really invest in the small details that count when it comes to your Christmas tree. Below, we've shared some of the most stylish ways to shop the look (many of which are part of the Black Friday home deals, right now).

Having a beautiful wreath hanging from your front door during the holidays is a classic touch, and no one knows the difference a good-looking wreath can make more than designer Katie Shute. Her Instagram, @wreathsmadebykatie, is full of colorways and festive floral arrangements that will inspire you to dress your door, and truly wow your guests.

As you can imagine, right now is a particularly busy time of the year for Katie, who runs an Etsy shop selling her beautiful wreaths. Regardless of that, she kindly took the time to share seven of her best tips and tricks to inspire your own Christmas wreath ideas. "I have been toying with the idea of doing a design course for wreath makers," she told Livingetc. Well, consider this a sneak peek of what could be to come.

Whether you're looking for new ways to dress up your faux wreath, or you want to try your hand at making a Christmas wreath with live stems and holiday holly, Katie's tips for making Christmas wreaths make it all feel so much easier. Hang on it on the front door, above the fireplace, in your bedroom, or even outside... or make multiple to hang in all those places — the choice is yours!

Whatever you do, here are Katie's top tips.

1. Measure Your Space First

My mom always taught me to 'measure twice, cut once'. When it comes to making the most beautiful wreath (or styling a store-bought variety), the first thing to do is to know the size of the space you want to hang it in, and to ensure the size and shape of your wreath fits.

"My biggest tip for decorating or designing a wreath for your home is to measure your space before you order or design a wreath," says Katie. "Then once you know the size you need, you can go shopping for the best Christmas wreath."

No matter how beautifully you style your wreath, it's never going to look good if it's too small for the space, or visa versa, crammed into a tight corner.

2. Hang the Wreath While You Create

Katie's next tip is to hang your wreath up while you're creating or styling it. "That way you'll be able to see where things are actually lying when it's hung," she says.

This is perhaps an obvious tip, but actually one I never would have considered myself. Laying your wreath flat may allow you to apply your decor more easily, but you will not get an accurate idea of what it will look like or how things like your holiday bow decor will hang. Plus, you can tweak as you go!

3. Layer Faux Foliage

While most people think fresh is best, that's not necessarily always the case. When you inevitably end up falling in love with a wreath you create, you want to keep it for years to come, and that's only possible when it's faux.

The downside, however, is that faux wreaths can lack the beautiful freshness of real foliage. Katie has a solution though. "If you're making a wreath from faux florals, I recommend using three different kinds of greenery to give your wreath texture," she says.

If you don't know where to start, Katie says "One easy thing to do while shopping is to make a bouquet while you're at the store to see how things pair together."

4. Five Fresh Florals

However, if you're keen to try your hand at a fresh wreath, Katie recommends "Picking five florals and placing them evenly around your wreath," adding that "Styling picks around an entire wreath gives the wreath more balance."

Choosing five different flowers is also a great way to incorporate some color, to either complement or contrast with your other Christmas decorating ideas. If you need inspiration, pink is a color that is particularly popular this year, and soft pink roses would make a lovely complement to traditional red berry stems and green pine foliage.

5. Have a Focal Point

Every wreath needs one particular element that makes it pop. From bows to berries to baubles, having a strong focal point gives your wreath a shining moment. Plus, it is an easy way to jump on all the best Christmas decorating trends.

Katie says "If you're making a crescent style wreath and want to leave part of the grapevine showing I recommend using a focal point. Your focal point can be a large bow, poinsettia flower, or an ornament of some kind. Focal points will draw the eye in."

Berries are Katie's personal favorite, but other options include pinecones, bells, flowers, or small ornaments.

6. Hang From the Inside

There are also some more practical things to consider when decorating with wreaths. And one of the biggest is often working out how to hang a wreath, making sure it's not only secure, but also looks stylish (and preferably doesn't leave a hole in your front door.)

Katie's best tip for this is ingenious, and actually involves hanging it from the inside. "Put a Command hook [from Amazon] on the inside of your door, and hang the wreath with a long piece of twine or ribbon," she says. "You can loop it over the door and have it hang outside without having to see a hook."

7. Shop and Decorate Savvily

And finally, Katie says there a few smart ways to approach both making and decorating your wreaths at Christmas. When working with a fresh wreath, she recommends you "Clean and trim your grapevine before you decorate it," adding that you should "Pay attention to how flat the grapevine is, as some are wavy and it will make the final product uneven."

"A quick way to make a wreath is also to buy one of those sad holiday wreaths from a box store and then add more florals to it," adds Katie. "You can often find discounts on these wreaths during the holidays."

Following Katie's pro tips is sure to bring a little ease into your wreath decorating plans, and a whole lot of style to your Christmas decor.

When it comes to the holidays, lighting is an essential part of setting the mood. If you ask me, no table is complete, nor mantel aptly decorated without the soft glow of candles. But for something that melts away so quickly before our very eyes, pretty decorative candles can cost a pretty penny. Well, I've found a solution to that (three, in fact), thanks to some inspiring content creators on Instagram.

Christmas decorating ideas don't get much better than something that is quick and affordable to DIY. And nothing gets you in the spirit of the festive season like a little bit of arts and crafts (you could even turn it into a fun night with friends). Plus, something handmade just hits differently, especially when it's this stylish — I could easily see all three of these DIY candle decorating tricks being used year-round.

All three ideas shared below start with a simple taper candle, and take only a few minutes to complete once you've got your supplies. I've even done the hard work for you and found everything you need, as well as provided a quick breakdown of the steps. Now, I just need to decide which of these ideas I'm stealing for my Christmas styling this year...

1. The Christmas Tree Taper Candle

It's easy to fall in love with this festive Christmas tree-inspired taper candle hack by DIY and decor expert, Sheri Wilson (@sheri_wilson_). In her post, she says "This took me a couple of tries, but they turned out even better than I expected."

The Christmas candle idea involves carving small notches along the candle, and gently twisting them out to mimic that branches of a tree.

To recreate the look yourself, Sheri recommends in her caption to "Place your green taper candles into a pan of hot water and allow to soak until the wax begins to peel on the outside. Then, slice upwards on the softened candles to create the 'tree branches'. Be sure not to slice too far into the candle, only the outer layer in an upwards direction."

2. The Christmas Bow Taper Candle

DIY expert Christina Clericuzio (@flipdaddie) came up with this clever Christmas candle hack when she saw Anthropologie's Meri Meri Gold Bow Taper Candles, and wanted to recreate the look for less. This way, you also get to customize your own color palette to suit your styling more.

By now, we all know that holiday bow decor is trending this year, so pairing these candles with a stylish bow candlestick holder is the perfect complement. Playful yet chic, you can dress this idea up will a colorful arrangement of wax bows, or stick to a more minimalist Christmas decor palette and adorn the candlesticks with little black or brown bows.

To recreate the look, simply fold your wax sticks (see below) into little bows, and stick or pin them to taper candles in the color of your choice.

3. The Pretty Pearl Christmas Taper Candle

And last, but certainly not least, we have this pretty pink pearl candle hack from interior decorating creator Regan Muack (@thebloomingnest). This one couldn't be more simple, but the results are stunning (and would work well beyond the holidays). Plus, the options here are endless.

In her post, Regan shows how you just need to stick small (and faux) pearl stud earrings into your taper candle, to create a look that feels so elegant. While I've never thought to do this myself (why not?!), it instantly reminded me of Anthropologie's candle charms that seem to be everywhere right now.

In her post, Regan says the "Look can be an easy DIY for birthdays, holidays, you name it," adding that it's "So easy and cute! I can't wait to make little magical moments like this all over the house when I decorate for Christmas."

I don't mind coming across as biased when I say that Primaried Studio is hands-down my top choice on this list of the best furniture stores in Miami. Having followed the platform since its launch in 2020, I am yet to visit it first-hand. Still, luckily enough for both of us, Miamian-born-and-bred founder Jonathan Sanchez-Obias' vintage furniture curation is so joyful and elevated that it won't take you more than a rapid glance at the shop's Instagram feed to become irremediably obsessed with it.

A passion project emerged as a reaction to the surging interest in collectible furniture and rare home goods registered during the pandemic, Primaried Studio began operating out of a storage unit before finding its permanent home in a showroom in Little Haiti a few months later. Specialized in vintage items and décor from the 1960s to the 1990s, Sanchez-Obias' spirited eye for mid-century modern homeware, Space Age design, and Italian craftsmanship puts happiness back into the interiors industry. I find his lighting edit most amusing, along with the yellowed IKEA catalogues and fanciful tableware at the heart of his home objects selection. An early 1970s, Japan-manufactured Pierre Cardin serving set? Count me in.

ESPASSO — the platform design dealer Carlos Junqueira originally launched in New York in 2001 before expanding to Los Angeles, London, and Miami in the following years — takes that center stage in its award-winning public exhibition programming and recurring artist collaborations.

Conceived as a stage for the international promotion of industry-leading Brazilian designers and architects, this gallery and furniture store presents the country's interior innovation to the world across a variety of furniture, lighting, and architectural installations. With a roster of talents boasting influential personalities like Joaquim Tenreiro, Sergio Rodrigues, and Oscar Niemeyer, the space is a testament to Brazil's influential design heritage, bridging its past, present, and future.

5. DIDA SHOP

At Livingetc, we're so used to anticipating trends that one of the best furniture stores in Miami mentioned in this article, DIDA SHOP, hasn't even launched officially yet. Still, as "it's coming soon", we have thought of giving you a head start on what to expect from the homeware platform of the eponymous interior design studio's by-appointment-only showroom, DIDA Home.

Sharing the same liking for high-end, luxuriously playful yet functional décor of co-founders Diana Uribe and David Miranda's projects, DIDA SHOP will make the ingeniousness of their vision more widely, and immediately, collectible. In for more rarities and quirky design? If you're city wanderings have left you drained, don't despair. All you gotta do is stop off at one of the best restaurants in Miami to proceed on your exploration of the local interior scene with plenty of invigorating food and drinks at hand.

In case you missed it, kitsch is cool again. And while I'm usually an advocate for all things traditional when it comes to Christmas, this year I've decided to lean right into kitsch decorations, embracing everything whimsical, fun, and a bit out-of-the-box. From West Elm's novelty ornaments to Anthropologie's colorful glass trees, everyone is doing it.

And, yes, kitsch decorations can absolutely still be stylish. (Would we ever do anything that wasn't?) When it comes to your Christmas decorating ideas that embrace all things kitschy, it's about finding the balance. While colors are aplenty, try to still adhere to a similar color palette to ensure your decorations — even if it's a combination of Santa figurines, pastel peppermints, and snowflakes — still look cohesive, and not completely chaotic.

In my search to find the best (and most stylish) kitsch decorations for Christmas, I stumbled upon these 12 beauties, which have quickly become some of my new favorite things. Novelty ornaments, mini checkered trees, pink garlands, striped lamps; whatever you need to brighten your home up for the holidays, you're sure to find below.

Every year I have big plans when it comes to decorating my Christmas trees (yes, plural), but every year I also seem to get completely overwhelmed with the latest trend and just end up using the same old ornaments. Not this year, though. This year, the teardrop ornament trend has inspired me to give my Christmas decor the chic glow-up it deserves. And with gorgeous (and affordable) options from Wayfair and Amazon, how could I not?

When it comes to decorating the home, I see a lot, so for a Christmas decor trend to stand out to me, it has to be good. Teardrop ornaments feel instantly timeless. And whether you plan to mix them in with your existing decor, or drench your tree in this delicate icy detail (I've seen videos of people hanging hundreds of individual pieces), the end result is well worth the effort.

And glass ornaments aren't the only way to embrace the trend either. Below is everything I know about the trend and, most importantly, the best places to shop the look.

Interior designer and digital creator, Val Turmalaj, added glass teardrop ornaments to her tree for a major minimalist Christmas decor moment. Like a lot of people this year, she says she was searching for a new look for her tree. "I wanted to bring that sense of winter magic inside by drenching the Christmas tree in melted ornaments and icicles," she tells me.

"My inspiration for the teardrops came from nature," she continues. "I was thinking about what I truly love about the holiday season and it brought me to what I love most about the feeling of Christmas: when evergreens have melted and then refrozen with icicles lining all the tips."

For her finished look (shown above), Val incorporated 3/4 different variations of icicles and then droplets through the tips and bottom of the tree. "It’s timeless and nostalgic to me, and can always be incorporated into next season's decor," she says.

And while this approach may take up a lot of time, it doesn't have to cost a lot, meaning it's one of the easiest ways to make a Christmas tree look more expensive. Here are some of my favorite teardrop ornaments to shop.

Teardrop ornaments and decor can even act as a sneaky trick to transition your home back to cozy winter mode after Christmas. Just move a few of the glass baubles over to a more neutral strand of garland, or hang them off of candle holders for a details that will give an elegant winter sparkle.

Other parts of your holiday decor can also take on this chic shape for a subtle, but stylish refresh to the classic decor options. Teardrop-shaped wreaths are one of my favorite ways I have seen the trend manifest in other areas of the home. And remember, find ways to decorate with wreaths does not have to be limited to just the door. Teardrop-shaped wreaths can hang from the back of kitchen bar stools or on cabinet doors, too. Or for a fun Christmas fireplace idea, hang a row of tear-drop wreaths the same way you would garland or stockings (add bows on or between the wreaths for an even more on-trend look).

Trust me, I am currently selecting one for my living room, and I am faced with the endless debate of whether to choose a neutral rug that will match any color or a bold one that will add a touch of striking style. A good rug pulls a room together, brings a sense of coziness, and even acts as an eye-catching design moment. So, an item as influential to a room as a rug must be carefully chosen. A neutral rug seems like the safe option you can't go wrong with, but isn't there something a bit more fun about going for a pop of color? This interior designer certainly thinks so.

With the return of all things playful and eccentric in interior design, rug trends are following suit. Emily Henderson, interior designer and founder of Style by Emily Henderson, has just launched a new collection with Rugs USA and the featured looks are a testament to her playful design style. While discussing her collab full of pattern and color, Emily says "A colorful rug just adds so much life and depth. The last thing any of us want is an uninviting, cold room so adding a colorful rug can instantly change that."

The best colorful rugs should add to your room, not visually take it over. That is why interior designer, Emily Henderson, says she "was really specific about the happy but more tonal colors we chose. We focused on beautiful colors that are not heavily saturated and have the right amount of movement with thread variations. Oh, and of course stunning subtle patterns."

Styling a Colorful Rug

Emily says "For a colorful rug, saturation level and thread color variation are the most important to me. Unless the room I’m designing is meant to be super bold, I tend to go for a less saturated tone. Think olive green over a kelly green. That’s an extreme example but you get the point. Then thread color variation is always super important. If there’s not enough of it the rug will almost always look a bit flat and will also be less forgiving to messes." The biggest thing to remember when incorporating a colored rug is that it should not be this big, scary thing to try and style. Just like a colorful accent chair, sofa, or bookshelf, the color you choose for your rug should be a harmonious match with the palette of the rest of the room.

While color-drenching or double-drenching moments are fabulous choices for a room, choosing a colorful rug does not mean you must go for full maximalism in your interior design. Just like with other elements of the room, Emily says "I think it’s all about balance. You don’t want to overdo it unless you want to create a totally tonal room." Small accents like art, objects, and textiles to match with colors in the rug and rest of the room are great. "I would just make sure to mix up the tones (go lighter, go darker) so that the room will look and feel more layered and interesting," says Emily.

At the end of the day, it is really up to personal preference and lifestyle. Abstract rugs, and rich tonal colors are perfect for cozy living room ideas while staying a bit more minimalistic can keep the peaceful, serene vibes sought after in spaces like the bedroom. "I tend to go more medium to dark in a high-traffic area like a living room and keep the really light rugs to somewhere like a bedroom where shoes aren’t worn as much," says Emily.

While I may still be deep in my search for a good rug to adorn my living room, my shopping cart just got a color upgrade.

Seeing red isn’t always a bad thing. The fiery and enigmatic tone has become a staple in designer schemes as more of us lean into expressive accents in our homes. Following the widespread celebration of the unexpected red theory earlier this year, many of us are asking the question — can decorating with red actually look stylish?

It can be a daunting prospect. Whilst red can be an energizing and joyful addition to interiors, it is also a color that attracts attention and has a lifelong association with danger (just think of a stop sign). Our journey into exploring the hue has seen us look at colors that go with red, but now we're considering more closely how the experts make the most of this primary shade.

Below, interior designers and color experts have weighed in on how to achieve visual balance with red whilst elevating schemes with this colorful and exciting addition. Their advice is accompanied by inspiring examples to help you paint the town red (or at least your living room to start with). Here's how to do it.

1. SMALL BUT MIGHTY — CHOOSE RED ACCESSORIES

San Franciscan designer Heather Hilliard takes an exacting approach to red, harnessing its striking impact in her contemporary bedroom design. Red accents give the soothing and natural textures in this space a touch of refreshment — the warmth in the brown and ecru tones is also accentuated by these touches too. It’s a subtle approach to the color that yields impressive results.

“Pillows, lighting, and other small decorative items and accessories are a good way to incorporate red," she says. "It's low commitment, as you can always swap them out later on if you tire of the color."

But she stresses that the placement and way you mix red items with other pieces in the room is important. “It depends on how much of it you're applying to a space, but I tend to lean towards rusty, deep reds if we're painting a room, and slightly lighter, brighter reds if it's one or two accessories or an accent piece,” she adds.

2. CONSIDER THE CONTRAST THAT RED CAN CREATE

“We wanted the interiors of the Arc show home to be playful and engaging, and using different tones of red, from deep to lighter rusty tones against a soft blue backdrop creates an element of surprise — something that feels intentional yet delightfully unanticipated," explains Owl Design founders Sophie van Winden and Simone Gordon. "This pop of color not only complements the surrounding design but also creates a sense of rhythm and balance in the room.”

The contrast that your preferred shade of red will create with the other colors within the room is a defining factor in the success of your scheme. In this example, the red takes a joyful stance of opposition against the blue and pastel tones, connected by their playful connotations but visually balancing one another. When designing, ask yourself how even in contrast, your shade of red brings cohesion to the room.

3. MIX AND MATCH YOUR SHADES OF RED

Taking a more nuanced approach, this red bathroom layers jubilant red tones to create a visually stunning moment. Ghislaine Viñas, the interior designer behind this memorable space, plays with form, color, and narrative. The other elements play on the same level as the red-striped wallpaper, from the crisp edges of the architectural vanity to the gallery-like arrangement of portraits on the wall. This is a space that isn’t afraid to channel the stark and bold presence of the hue that dominates it.

“I’m all for mixing non-matching reds — it’s such an interesting way to layer a space and create depth," she says. "Playing with different tones of the same color can give you a really unique look. For instance, putting a lipstick red next to a deep burgundy can be stunning, and then adding a pop of raspberry red takes it even further. It creates a rich, dynamic palette.”

4. BLEND YOUR RED WITH WARMER NEUTRAL TONES

Part of what makes red so appealing is the intense warmth that the color is very much identified by. Award-winning Australian interior designer Greg Natale’s Toorak Penthouse project is a testament to the versatility of red when it’s married with warming shades that soften its impact and simultaneously bring cohesion to the room.

“Opt for rich, warm reds like maroon or burgundy," he says. "These shades will still make a statement but won’t be as overpowering as brighter reds tend to be and are more timeless. They also pair better with other colors, such as gold, beige, pink, and brown, as demonstrated in this seating room. Amongst the warm neutrals, the maroon wall is blended in with the rest of the design, rather than fighting against it.”

5. CREATE UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE WITH DARKER SHADES OF RED

Thea Bloch-Neal, Durham-based founder and lead designer of Curated by Thea believes in the elegance and drama of darker red tones. The walls of her red living room are painted in rich brick-like red that instantly makes this space feel like a cozy cocoon, accentuated wonderfully by the buttery, espresso-colored leather sofa and warm wooden accents.

“I love incorporating dark reds or pops of bright red — they bring so much depth and elegance to a room," she says. "I like to pair reds with warm tones to avoid any unintended "sports team" vibes. You definitely don’t want your space to feel like a locker room!”

For those who are still finding their feet decorating with red, going for darker iterations of the color can be a great way to still enjoy all of the adventure and warmth this shade has to offer.

What is the unexpected red theory?

At the beginning of 2024, TikToker Taylor Simon coined the now viral ‘unexpected red theory’, setting the spotlight on red in the months to follow. Its secret lies in its selective approach, applying just the right amount of red to intrigue and excite.

“The ‘unexpected red theory’ is all about using red as a striking element that energizes a space without overwhelming it," says Sophie van Winden. "Red has a powerful presence, and when used thoughtfully, it draws the eye and creates a dynamic focal point.”

The bravery of the theory also lends to its success, it revels in the unexpected. “Adding a pop of red can always make a room look interesting and create a sense of uniqueness. It can defy a general theme or look and that can be daring and fun,” explains interior designer, Ghislaine Viñas.

Always wanted windows that make your home look like something straight out of a storybook? Me too. Have you ever heard of "muntins"? No, I hadn't either, until I stumbled upon an Instagram reel the other day.

It's hard to achieve the charm of a three-story Brownstone or French Tudor-style cottage in the country with a new build. Decoratively-paneled glass windows are an old-world feature that — regrettably — doesn't make its way into many contemporary homes. But now I know there are ways around that, and they don't have to cost a lot.

"Muntins" are simple strips of wood or metal that both separate and hold panes of glass in a window. If you have existing plain windows, you can also easily add a muntin for decorative effect in less than five minutes; introducing Victorian-era charm to any window treatment. Here's everything you need to know to get the look in your home.

What are Window Muntins?

Traditionally, muntins were a way of reducing the cost of windows. Back in their heyday, it was cheaper to buy glass in smaller fragments than as one whole sheet, so finding ways to connect smaller panes of glass was a more affordable option.

Livingetc's editor, Hugh Metcalf, says that today's windows with a vast expanse of glass cater to a more modern interior design trend and architectural look, but that muntins are "a clever idea to add character to a window, without having to completely replace them." When used in this way, purely as a decorative element, muntins can also often be referred to as "mullions" or "grilles".

The Instagram reel in question was posted by Drew Michael Scott, the popular interior designer behind Lone Fox. He had ordered custom muntins from Etsy to fit his kitchen windows, which he painted to match the colors of his interior and exterior walls. (If you can't go custom, another option is to try this adhesive trim kit from Amazon that allows you to get creative with your design.)

"It's a detail that can completely transform your space in a matter of seconds," Drew describes in the video.

Choosing a Style of Window Muntin

The architecture of Drew's Spanish Colonial-style home suits the more eclectic style of muntin he chose for his small kitchen window treatment, however, there are a range of looks to choose from. Hugh says he is particularly drawn "to the classic rectangular muntins often used on traditional casement windows." (Shown in the image above.)

Fitting your existing windows with a more detailed muntin design also helps invite a level of privacy into your home. The patterned design creates a barrier from seeing clearly into your home, without having to obscure the glass completely.

If you want to embrace the retro trends that are coming back in fashion this year, then opting for a diamond shape is the route to take. And there's no need to stop with just your windows, either. Anywhere there is glass in your home, a muntin can add a visual aesthetic. Think in your bathroom, on glass pantry doors, or even your wardrobe.

While window muntins make for a charming detail in various places thoughout the home, Drew raised a good point in his video that it's important not to forget your exterior style. This design detail can also be seen from the outside, so it's important to stay consistent with your home's architecture.

Though it might seem like a minor window tweak, Hugh adds that "you cannot underestimate the small difference something like this will make to your home."

There is something about an interior space drenched in a warm-colored wood that feels so 70s-inspired. Given that the distinctive decade is having its biggest comeback in home design this year, I'm not surprised that this chic take on the drenching technique is coming out of the woodwork.

Wood drenching is the latest interior design trend that takes wood paneling to another level. The concept has been born out of the famous "color drenching" technique where you douse an entire room — walls, ceilings, and woodwork — in a color of your choosing. In 2025, however, designers are swapping in floor-to-ceiling wood for paint to stunning effect.

What is Wood Drenching?

The basis of color drenching in your home is to find a color you want to coat your walls in and then style the rest of your decor with textures and hues that will work in harmony with your base. Wood drenching acts in the same way by layering the likes of millwork, furniture, and wooden flooring to create warmth and depth.

From furniture to flooring to wood-paneled walls, there are many ways to carry the instant warming quality of wood throughout a space. But channeling the aesthetic you get from, say, Scandinavian-style cabins or cozy ski retreats, versus the less elevated look of a two-by-four shed can be tricky.

How do you decorate with the Wood Drenching technique?

Adding texture to walls with a form of wood paneling can offer a great foundation for wood drenching. Austin Carrier, Interior Designer and Founder of Hommeboys, says that an interior clad with wood creates a unique atmosphere and mood within a home. "Wood brings an organic texture to a space," says Austin. "It offers so much diversity in terms of the different species, stains, and treatments." It's easy to paint our walls a specific color and call it a day, but this technique pushes us to think outside the box and create a space that feels warm and cozy while also catering to variations in style.

But to style something as bold as an all-wood look, the key is balance. While encasing rooms in plenty of wooden materials will make for a sophisticated space, you also need to offset the brown with other accents. "To do this, incorporate rich, textural upholstery, natural stones, and metals," says Austin. "The balance of these materials is really important to get the look right."

Wooden Furniture Buys

You should also avoid relying on one single wood tone. Combine the likes of mahogany, ash, and oak for a varied look, with one on the walls, another on the floors, and the other as an accent through furniture. A darker wood drench will play on that cool-chic vibe of the 70s and give your home a groovy, stylish look, while a light wood will cater to a more minimalist or Scandinavian design.

Austin says to not be scared of going all in with this look. Adding wood to your walls and throughout your space "is a great way to add architecture to a space that is lacking in detail; as well as elevate the space with a more handmade, custom quality," he adds.

Installing wood paneling on walls or hardwood floors is no mean feat, but you can wood drench in other ways that are easier to accomplish in any home. (Think faux bois DIYs or built-ins.) Furniture items like wooden accent chairs or lamps with heavy wooden bases are lovely touches to start drenching your home in this warm, rich way.

You may think these paint colors will cater to something more classically neutral, but the truth is that color is at the heart of old-school decor. Out of all the color trends popping up this year, the vintage-inspired look is one of the most timeless and charming styles for interiors. We asked designers and color experts to help decipher what the biggest vintage color trends of the season are and how to implement them into your home — here's what they had to say.

Amy Krane, Architectural Color Consultant, says that one thing is especially true while shopping for vintage-inspired colors, "context is so important when talking about the perception of a color in design. You need to look at today’s trends and see what colors have come around again." We have seen everything from rich browns, deep purples, and muted greens making their way back onto the color scene. This time around, these hues are taking on a more nuanced, understated persona.

"Vintage style paint colors can refer to many decades in the mid-1900s but are often most commonly represented by muted and less saturated tones," says Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams, Emily Kantz. "Picture yourself strolling through an old vintage shop, you aren’t seeing bright pops of red and blue, but more understated secondary shades like oranges, purples, and greens." And with that, here are the shades to try for your new vintage-inspired paint ideas.

1. Rich Browns

Browns are all over the color palettes for the upcoming year. They are an elevated way to introduce a cozy vibe into any room. Amy says she's seeing shades of brown everywhere and that its re-emergence is no surprise. "Brown was big in the 70s and is huge right now," she says. From lighter cinnamon shades to rich chocolatey tones, brown is back with a more moody feel than ever.

Opting for a lighter, more beige shade for the walls with a darker brown on the trim is a lovely way to incorporate the double-drenching paint technique. The color's cozy nature brings a warming sensation to a room that is coated in it, while the earth tones ground us back into nature. A brown color palette is perfect for a decor scheme that feels inviting yet luxe.

2. Antique Whites

You really cannot go wrong with a white or an off-white hue for wall color. It's a safe bet for decorating and a classic color that will not age. The antique-inspired whites add a little bit more of a visual touch to a space with their colored undertones.

Sometimes the easiest way to create a stylish backdrop for a room is to go crisp and neutral. The cream and off-white shades are the best white paints for a vintage palette that will guarantee the quintessential refined look of traditional homes, and give you room to experiment with material and decor. Arianna Barone, Color Marketing Manager at Benjamin Moore says, "The charm and romance of the vintage aesthetic is about infusing a space with history and character, without being too precious or serious."

Off-whites and neutrals like Edgecomb Gray, Glacier White, and White Opulence from Benjamin Moore can be used as a backdrop for artwork you want to make the focal point in the space. Arianna says "vintage style welcomes offbeat, unique design choices so the paint colors used should highlight the well-loved, curated decor found in these homes."

3. Golden Ochre Yellows

Yellow has always been a favorite color of mine, but it can be a bit of a daunting color to try and incorporate into the home. The vintage color trend offers a yellow that is more palatable to a chic space — golden, ochre yellow. This shade of the sunny hue leans into the green territory, to create that vintage and homey feel.

The more golden take on the yellow feels elevated while still feeling fun. To style, Amy says to remember that "color creates the emotional response to a space and color can tie together disparate shapes and forms." A color as happy and bold as yellow will work great in a social space, or anywhere you want to invoke a feeling of playful positivity. Just keep in mind colors that go well with yellow, so as not to accidentally clash with this prominent color choice.

Ashely Banbury, Color Marketing Manager at HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, says she loves to see warm yellows mixed with other colorful, vintage accents to create an effortless, and balanced retro style. "Warm tans, oranges and yellows can be a great foundation to a space layered with pops of watery blues and greens," says Ashley.

4. Muted Blues

I would argue, that blue is quickly becoming this year's new neutral. From light blues to pops of deep navies, it is a timeless living room color or a shade for any space you want to create a chic yet serene environment.

Vintage blues often feel more muted, usually with a darker tone. You want to look for a shade of blue that feels lived in, and the darker tones of a muted blue add a feeling of depth and mood, playing nicely with that antique charm.

I love the idea of a lighter, vintage blue on the walls, as the colors that go with light blue are nearly endless. Using a muted blue as a neutral will allow for bold decorative touches, like gold, vintage picture frames, and rich wooden furniture, to stand out.

5. Earthy Greens

Green is a color that ultimately never goes out of style, but it does find itself changing tone throughout the seasons. This summer, bright and vibrant greens took the spotlight, but an earth-toned green will be better suited for a more traditional aesthetic. Amy says that olive green is a particular shade she is seeing making a comeback in the world of color, given that it caters to a 70s, retro look.

Olive green leans into a more recent, retro aesthetic meaning that it's one of the best ways to get the mid-century modern look. I envision this lively color choice in plush, velvet chairs, or as a striking way to paint your kitchen cabinetry. Whatever way you choose to incorporate these earthy greens into your home, you are sure to score on the chic scale.

6. Deep Purples

If you want to really get ahead of the latest trends in color, then introducing plum shades of purple is where you need to start. These purples almost feel like a dramatic, dark brown which gives them a more neutral characteristic, without compromising on stunning visual appeal.

As for styling with this color, Emily says to "introduce touches of a daring violet or plum shade with an accent wall detail." She recommends shades like Sherwin Williams' Dark Auburn, Brandywine or Quixotic Plum for a dramatic pop of color. You can then break up these more intense shades by combining them with some of the lighter, antique white ideas.

Styling with a vintage design gives ample opportunity to play with color while still sticking to classic charm. To give this palette a more contemporary feel, finding unique accent pieces that show off your personal style is the best way to go. "Look for items like velvet furniture, funky vintage fabrics and woven tapestries," says Emily. "You should also avoid bright white lights and opt for warmer yellow light that will make the space feel very comfortable, cozy and inviting."

The vintage aesthetic is one that you can feel comfortable boldly introducing into your home, as it ages as gracefully as it looks in your space. The past always has a fun way of circling back into current trends and design styles, so vintage shopping may be your answer to a fresh, new look.

I can never get enough of new color trends and the endless inspiration they offer for redecorating my home. Luckily, it's the time of year when color predictions are truly the gift that keeps on giving, and one trend that continues to crop up is the revival of serene yet moody 1970s hues.

Case in point: Lick's newly-released 2025 color palette that features nine shades centered around the theme "New Nostalgia". The idea is that certain colors and hues can bring you back to your favorite memories: the rosy flowers of your mom's old robe or the black and white vinyl flooring of your favorite hometown lunch spot, for example.

Lick’s 2025 Color Palette, New Nostalgia, is a muted and moody mix of rich pigments that range from rosy pink and warm taupes to deep velvety purples and dark blacks. The range includes many of our favorite paint colors on the rotation this year, but with a feel that brings us back to the nostalgia of the 70s.

"Colors that feel nostalgic can bring both comfort and emotional stability and in the last year, this new wave of nostalgia has been particularly evident in the resurgence of cozy, retro color palettes inspired by past decades, specifically the 1970s," says the Director of Interior Design and Color Psychologist at Lick, Tash Bradley. There is a sense of relaxed optimism in this decade's home design, making it well-suited for laid-back and inviting gatherings at home.

I especially love a living room trend that dons the elegant, bohemian look of the past. Everything from wall color to accent chairs and throw pillows can be coated in these eclectic pigments.

For those of you unsure about a full-on 70s revival, Tash reassures us that the 70s are back, but better. "Lick has reimagined these nostalgic colors for modern interiors, creating a palette that’s both emotionally resonant and surprisingly contemporary," she says. The darker, richer tones of the paints cater to that cozy feel, while still elevating the space into something new and unique.

Shop the Shades

Bringing color back into the home is a renaissance I am all for, especially when the colors feel as liveable today as they did back then. Lick's palette is bold, yet remains tastefully subtle, giving you plenty of room to incorporate the colors in your home without sacrificing serenity.

One of my favorite techniques is color drenching or, more recently, double drenching. Blue 04, one of the shades from this palette, is a mid-tone blue perfect for drenching a room. I picture this bright and calming color on the walls of a bedroom, dotted with pops of decorative red for a playful retro vibe. The range of colors that go with light blue is almost endless, too, making it the perfect to experiment with.

Another one of the key color combinations in Lick’s new palette is purple and brown, and these sophisticated, deep hues are all over mood boards for the coming year. "Purple and Brown is a timeless combination which is so complimentary due to these hues’ shared richness and depth of color, supported by deep red undertones," explains Tash. She also notes that it works particularly well in a bedroom scheme. "Brown 02 offers grounding and assuring qualities while Purple 03 adds warmth and a touch of luxury,” she says.

The suave style of the 70s never truly dies, and this year's color predictions further prove the decade's endurance. Opting for a contemporary take on these classic colors is a timeless choice for your home, so lean into this new wave of retro and you'll be searching for macrame decor, conversation pits, and patterned sofas in no time.

Create the Nostalgic 70s Look

There are a few obvious markers that signal the start of fall - cooler weather, shorter days, and - of course - the onset of color forecasting season. For anyone in the design world, these few months are all about predicting the latest trends set to define the year ahead, and no one takes that analysis quite as seriously as our favorite paint brands.

By virtue of their being, trends are cyclical in nature, but our color preferences tend to move at a faster pace than the likes of material, texture, or form. Each year, around September, leading paint brands announce their chosen shade to represent the mood of the moment during our next circle around the sun - the so-called "color of the year". But why do they bother, and how do they choose them?

Clever marketing aside, there are some really interesting reasons why color forecasting comes around every year, and it has a more wide-reaching impact than you probably realize. To find out how this increasingly common practice really works, we asked some of our favorite paint brands to offer some insight into the inner workings of their color forecasting methods. Here's what we found out.

What is color forecasting?

The color experts who work for leading paint brands really are the best in the business. They always have their finger on the pulse when it comes to emerging color trends, using external factors like cultural moments and societal shifts combined with consumer data and analysis to build a vision of our decorating habits. Think of them as the soothsayers of the world of chroma. This is the phenomenon known as color forecasting.

Color experts never stop forecasting, but as we enter fall and turn our attention to the year ahead, most paint brands pinpoint a shade they believe will define the new year. The so-called "color of the year" has a huge influence on the way we decorate, but there are - of course - plenty of chosen shades each year, all from different brands.

"Our annual celebration of color stems from a year-long journey of creativity and global exploration in color and design," explains Hannah Yeo, Senior Manager of Color Marketing at Benjamin Moore. "Each year, one color emerges, encapsulating our research and design vision through the lens of paint, offering a source of creative inspiration for the year ahead."

There are typically some recurring threads - be it neutrals, warm tones, or color families (2024's predictions centered largely around blue) - but there are outliers, too. And even when those specific shades don't have a huge presence in our future of decorating, they still influence many of our design decisions (and the color trends that follow).

"These selections highlight emerging trends, while also ensuring the colors are timely, harmonizing with current interior design styles," explains Hannah. EAs signals of growing design trends, they serve as conversation starters and sources of inspiration, allowing homeowners to choose colors that feel relevant today and can be enjoyed for years to come."

But the relationship between these specific hues and the trends that follow is twofold; the color of the year is chosen from detailed analysis and emerging decorating trends, but that particular shade also has a huge impact on the colors that come after. You could argue that "color of the year" announcements create a manufactured trend landscape, but they nevertheless have a huge real-world influence on how we decorate with color.

"Designating a Color of the Year offers consumers confidence during the color selection process and invites them to be inspired," says Behr’s VP of Color and Creative Services, Erika Woelfel. "Color of the Year allows Behr Paint the opportunity to highlight a color that is poised to plan a leading role in interior and exterior paint projects in the coming year."

According to Erika, a Color of the Year can often turn an unsuspected color into a "staple in a space simply by sharing the experience a certain color can provide". "For example, Behr’s 2025 Color of the Year 'Rumors' was selected to encourage consumers to make a statement and add a pop of color into their homes," she says.

As Erika alludes to, besides the systematic and scientific aspects of color forecasting, the aim is to inspire homeowners' paint ideas. "Our Color of the Year aims to provide strategic color direction, stimulate innovative home design projects and showcase creative solutions for consumers as they create the home of their dreams," says Sue Kim, director of color marketing at Valspar. "It influences up and coming interior design trends and sets the tone for the year ahead while establishing spaces of greater joy and creativity."

How do paint brands choose a color of the year?

The far-reaching significance of the colors of the year can be felt everywhere, from decor to fashion and everywhere in between, but how do the brands decide on a particular hue in the first place, and how do they ensure they don't choose color trends going out of style?

Large color corporations like Pantone are widely considered industry leaders, but most paint brands announce their chosen shades way before the likes of Pantone make their annual predictions known. Well, according to Sue, the main drivers come from cultural shifts outside the world of interiors.

"Each year, Valspar’s team of color, design and style experts selects the Color of the Year by drawing inspiration from a variety of lifestyle trends ranging from iconic pop culture moments to interior design breakthroughs," she says. "By using this holistic, consumer-centric approach, Valspar identified that this year, homeowners are looking for an enduring color that stands the test of time and infuses excitement and playfulness into the home."

Erika and the team at Behr noticed a similar trend in their consumer research which also influenced their choice for Color of the Year. "We noticed a shift of people looking to incorporate more personality and depth into their home, whether painting the whole wall or adding a subtle, sophisticated accent," she says. "New research conducted by BEHR Paint reveals that three-quarters (76%) of Americans would consider painting a room or wall a shade of red and 73% of Americans say a red paint color can add depth and character to living spaces." With that in mind, they selected a deep red shade that could be a "confident anchor" within a room, while still complimenting neutrals.

Color of the year announcements are only in their infancy (most were established in the last 15 years) but it's already hard to imagine a world without such an influential moment on our design calendar. We should all now be well aware of color-drenching: the interior paint trend that took our traditional interiors and allowed us to experiment with boldly enveloping our rooms in monochrome tones. Well, the time has come for a new variation of the beloved paint technique in town, and it's here to make an even bigger statement.

Double drenching is like the cool older sister of the original color drenching trend. Its daring double nature is a playful evolution of sticking to a single shade. It encourages us to venture even farther into the complex world of color with a tonal scheme, using two shades of the same hue to cocoon a room. Maybe you are someone who already loves a bold pop of color and wants their trim to stand out, or maybe you want to add more depth to your existing color-drenched spaces. Either way, this is one of the top color trends to be on your radar.

If you're anything like me, making a singular, definitive decision is a troubling ordeal. The idea of embracing multiple tones of the same color within a space gives me greater scope for decorating. But according to experts, it is not a technique for the faint of heart.

Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director at Little Greene, talks about their company's coining of the double-drenching approach. Ruth explains that "double drenching" is the more sophisticated evolution of the color drenching paint technique. "Rather than enveloping a space from ceiling to skirting and every surface in between in one single color, double drenching utilizes two or more related colors to drench an interior," says Ruth.

This trend is not as simple as painting every nook and cranny in your favorite color, it is a bit more complex to achieve. In order to execute this look effectively, Ruth recommends opting for "a combination of equally powerful colors that vary in hue rather than tone." What does this mean exactly? Simply put, tone refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. So rather than playing it safe with just a lighter variation of the same blue, double drenching is about going bold and mixing up the hues and undertones. This would look like trying out bright teals (which have a more green undertone) next to royal blues (where the undertone leans more purple).

"Heretofore, mixing undertones in one setting was considered a decorating no-no," says Architectural Color Consultant, Amy Krane. "Generally speaking the most harmonious spaces are ones which mix both warm and cool colors in it. A space which employs this technique does not." But the deterrent here is also the inspiration. The goal is to consider controversial color pairings and how they can actually work very stylishly together.

Some people will find that the color mixes involved in double drenching will result in clashing colors, but others will find them highly stimulating and a whimsical touch to a room. Amy says the technique is better saved for a few rooms around the home, rather than the whole house. "I would not only vary up the undertones, I would also mix up the value and chroma so there is more balance in the room," she says.

Mixing yellow-greens and blue-greens is a safe place to start with double painting as this combination imitates what we see in nature so it will feel familiar, natural, and most peaceful. Then adding little pops of colors that go with green in your decor will play even more into that bold and eccentric feel. "A double-drenching approach is about fully enveloping a space with color, there is no space for white ceilings or skirting with this decorating style," says Ruth.

The best thing about this new color trend is it's openness to creativity while simultaneously making your home feel more sophisticated. As Ruth says, "this decorating approach allows for differentiation while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. The subtle use of incorporating related colours together will create a layered look, with subtle contrast which feels dynamic and visually intriguing."

From there, you can always work in brighter, bolder colors that go with beige for some extra daring details.

"We often assume that the only way to add fun and playfulness to our interiors is with color, but swapping plain beige curtains for patterned and textured beiges is such an easy way to update your space for the new season," says Yvonne Keal, senior product manager at Hillarys. Caramel beiges have warm, comforting undertones that will brighten up the colder months, and winter's approach means updating living room window dressings is a necessary task to keep out the cold (and a great excuse for a quick design refresh).

Ethan and Yvonne both agree that they would love to see a warm-toned living room styled with antique items and heavier textures. Textured pieces play upon the coziness of the season and make a space more visually compelling. "Tactile fabrics with beige tones that will add depth to your color scheme include options like boucle, velvets, corduroys, or gingham patterns," says Yvonne.

I love a good neutral beige in my home, but sometimes a neutral color scheme can leave you feeling limited when it comes to seasonal styling. By weaving this on-trend caramel tone into your home decor you can still keep the palette monochromatic but it will be dynamic enough to bring your space to life.
