If you live in a home without AC (almost every household in the UK) or somewhere with lots of windows, seasonal heat can be a hard problem to beat. Enjoying some extended daylight in our homes is lovely, but not when the temperatures start soaring. Clever window treatments are essential for blocking out heat and making your home feel cool — but is it possible to find options that also look cool, while doing it?

In short: yes. While changing your curtains seasonally often means opting solely for functionality, failing to consider style altogether could mean having bland-looking window treatments for a large part of the year. On the other hand, a curated treatment can completely transform a room. So, the type you choose needs to have both. Will it be blinds, shades, sheers, or curtains?

I asked the experts. From the material you choose to the color and kind of shade you're styling — it all helps keep the aesthetics looking sharp indoors and the heat where you can enjoy it, outside. Below are four modern window treatment ideas that are the most warm-weather-friendly.

1. Layered Window Treatments

Before you get too deep into the technicalities of different types of blinds and cooling shades, know that a layered window treatment scheme is often the most effective. Layers give you styling options and greater adaptability to changing weather and temperatures.

The best layered dressings for keeping heat out are those that combine a structured base layer with full-length drapery. "This approach allows something like a Roman shade or roller shade to sit close to the glass and block the initial wave of solar heat gain," explains Haley Weidenbaum, co-founder of custom window treatment brand Everham.

Then, adding drapery on top provides an additional layer of sun protection while beautifully framing the window. "When done right, this combination keeps your home comfortable without sacrificing an ounce of style," says Haley.

2. Blackout-Lined Window Treatments

So, what style of curtains and shades should you add to your windows or layered scheme? Whether you are leaning towards a Roman blind or beautiful, floor-length drapery, if direct sunlight and intense heat are a problem in your space, blackout curtains are the way to go.

"The key is always investing in custom curtains with a lining, like blackout lining," adds Haley. And contrary to the stigma that blackout curtains are thick and boring, you can actually find blackout curtains on the high street in almost all of the best contemporary curtain trends. "I like to think of the lining as the functional workhorse, while the front fabric remains soft and full of beautiful movement," says Hayley.

Alternatively, you can find blackout window liners (like this style from Dunelm) that you can attach to the back of your existing drapes without changing them. That said, they're designed not to be seen, so wouldn't work on a sheer.

3. Retractable Blinds and 'Close to the Glass' Shades

So, layers are good, and blackout curtains are an essential choice for particularly hot rooms. But what else is out there? As mentioned, in a layered scheme, a 'close to the glass' layer should always be included. This looks something like a Roman blind or roller shade, and they can also be used as a complete alternative to drapery.

"These shades work exceptionally well because they sit closer to the window, minimizing light gaps," explains Haley. "It allows you to maintain a very clean, tailored aesthetic while effectively keeping the room cool due to a lining added to a shade or the inherent material of a roller shade."

What blind you choose depends on what your room needs. A black-out lining might still be useful in a south-facing room, while wooden blinds or bamboo rolling shades could be a slightly more stylish option. Or for a shade that adds privacy without blocking too much light, something like a top-down-bottom-up blind is particularly clever. Again, it's all based on what your spaces needs.

4. External Awnings

Lastly, you can start from the outside for an even more effective way to block heat. Nip the problem in the bud, as they say, and shade the house. "External window awnings and solar screens are ideal for blocking sunlight before it hits the windows," explains green construction consultant Sarah Jameson.

With patio awnings, you'll want to "opt for thick, tightly woven screens that provide maximum shade while still allowing airflow," says Sarah. A sun sail is another way that looks super design-forward (and it's a great way to cool your garden in hot weather), while something like a retractable awning will provide more control over shading. The goal here is to preemptively block internal heat by shading windows from the sun.

Strategically placed landscaping ideas will also have a similar effect. "Roof overhangs, exterior shades, and trees properly positioned to shade the windows will further prevent direct sun exposure," explains Sarah. "And wraparound window treatments can greatly reduce heat transmission into the home."

The short answer is yes, curtain fabric plays a big role in keeping heat out. "Weave density is the biggest factor: a tightly woven fabric blocks more heat than a loose, open weave, since less light — and the heat it carries — passes through," explains Haley.

Bedroom curtain trends have traditionally satisfied two main requirements: block light and provide privacy. But beyond those chief concerns, interior designers have lately asked more of them — the most exciting bedroom curtain trends, in fact, have little to do with windows at all.

“I think we're increasingly treating drapery as soft architecture rather than simply window dressings,” agrees interior designer Alyssa Owens. “It can disguise awkward conditions, create focal points, introduce color and texture, and transform a room — in a bedroom, where atmosphere is everything, that influence is hard to overstate.”

Increasingly, curtain trends are migrating from windows and stretching across entire walls or surrounding beds; they are acting as decorative devices that frame artwork or even replace wallpaper. Function hasn’t been abandoned (blackout curtains are still essential in an era of ‘sleep-maxxing’), but designers are expanding the category entirely, turning the usually straightforward curtain into a standout design moment.

"As bedrooms have become more of a retreat from increasingly busy lives, every layer matters," says interior designer David Ries. "Curtains can be both practical and deeply expressive, so I think people are paying much closer attention to them than they did even a decade ago." Below, designers highlight the bedroom curtain trends they’re most excited about this year.

1. Wall-to-Wall Pleats

We tend to think of curtains for windows. But you might consider them for your walls instead: designers increasingly bypass the panes entirely for wall-to-wall drapes that bring a ‘cocooning effect’ to the bedroom.

For Jessica Davis, principal and creative director of Nest Studio, this approach creates a seamless visual effect. “They soften a space and add a uniformity that traditional drapes don't have,” she says. “If you have a bunch of windows and each one has a separate treatment, it can look choppy and busy.”

In a recent project, Jessica leaned into the sumptuous effect with a gauzy curtain fabric that’s atmospheric, running the drape behind the headboard, enveloping the bedroom. By installing the track as close to the bedroom ceiling as possible, it becomes less decorative and more architectural. “You want the track to be unobtrusive and blend with the wall or ceiling color versus standing out, which is often the case with traditional window treatments,” she explains.

The pleat itself matters, too. “You should also use a ripple-fold type of pleat instead of a traditional pinch pleat — it looks much cleaner and works better with this type of application,” Jessica adds.

2. Artistic Backdrops

You can think of drapery as a way to block light, but designers are using curtains more like a backdrop, too. Branching off the trend for wall-to-wall curtains, some are now suspending framed artworks against drapery to create a striking and ‘floating’ focal point above the bed.

“Using drapery as a backdrop creates opportunities for art where there might otherwise be none,” says Alyssa Owens, who recently hung a Mary Ball painting against sheer chiffon curtains. “In this project, it helped us solve several problems at once: disguising asymmetrical windows, creating a focal point above the bed, and making the room feel more atmospheric and restful without any permanent alterations.”

Achieving the seamless look requires some technical prowess. In Alyssa’s case, her team mounted a timber block to the wall just behind the drapery so the artwork would hang flush with the fabric. “Curtain fullness, track location, artwork size, and projection all need to be considered together,” she says. “I've also seen beautiful examples using wires or ceiling-mounted systems.”

The choice of fabric is equally important. Structured drapery with generous folds, she says, can lend a more formal, gallery-like quality, while lighter textiles do the opposite. “The goal was softness and immersion, so we intentionally selected a lightweight chiffon sheer,” she says. “The sheer curtains diffuse light, soften the edges of the room, and allow the artwork to sit within a cloud of color.”

The result can transform not only the room, but the artwork itself. “When an artwork sits among folds of fabric rather than against a hard surface, the whole arrangement is softer and more enveloping,” she adds.

3. Cocooning Canopies

Who says bedroom curtains are just for windows? Reimagining a centuries-old decorating device, designers are once again embracing curtains around canopy beds, often coordinating them with window treatments to create a fabric-drenched effect.

For interior designer Christopher Alexander, the appeal is about more than aesthetics. “Bed hangings are an effective way to temper the scale of a room,” he says. “As bedrooms have grown increasingly large, they can often feel expansive and impersonal.”

In a recent project, Christopher chose a sheer Zak + Fox fabric for both the bed hangings and window treatments within an oversized primary suite. “The addition of bed hangings helps visually reduce that volume, creating a greater sense of intimacy and comfort,” he explains. “Beyond their decorative appeal, fabric introduces softness, texture, and a subtle architectural division within the space, making the room feel more layered and inviting.”

To give the scheme a contemporary edge, Christopher opted for a double-sided treatment with a jolt of color: he paired the neutral sheer with an eye-catching magenta Donghia fabric on the interior-facing panels. “The central color block on the interior panels draws you in and provides a point of interest, yet it never disrupts the serenity of the space,” he says. “Instead, it adds depth, focus, and a subtle layer of visual engagement.”

4. Retro Shorties

We’ve seen plenty of interiors with drapes that reach all the way to the floor — and even drapes that puddle dramatically — but interior designer Heather Peterson is making the case for hiking up the hem, particularly in more relaxed bedrooms.

“In casual settings, we're digging the return of shorty curtains,” she says. “After years of debate over hems pooling or just ‘kissing’ the floor, there's something refreshingly retro about a short hem.”

In this lakehouse bedroom, Heather paired rough-sawn board-and-batten walls with curtains in Amy Karyn’s vintage-inspired ‘Camille’ fabric, cut to land just below the window trim. “The odd length keeps the curtains from getting too sweet,” she explains. “The trick is to use a crisp construction to make sure retro does not tip into just plain old.”

The margins are rather fine, which means getting the proportions right is essential. “I would think about the space between the bottom of the window and the floor in thirds, and keep the hem in the top third,” she says. “In this bedroom, we have nearly equal spacing above and below the window, which also feels practiced and intentional.” As a rule of thumb, she approaches short curtains much as she would a Roman shade, allowing them to just cover the bottom of the trim.

As for fabrics, Heather recommends sticking to natural and easy textiles like cotton, linen, and chintz, provided they have enough body to their shape. “Something too soft or sheer is going to feel saggy, and suddenly the treatment is like something out of a dated motel,” she warns.

5. Maximal Meets Minimal

Clients aren't always brave when it comes to their bedroom design. Many seek out calming, neutral bedroom schemes even if the rest of the house has a bit more energy. But New York’s Ries Hayes studio thinks there's another way to find balance: maximalist curtains.

“Statement curtains allow you to introduce visual interest at the perimeter of the room while keeping the primary experience — your bed, bedding, lighting, and circulation — serene and uncluttered,” says the studio's co-founder, David Ries. He put this into action with black-and-ivory botanical drapery in an otherwise disciplined bedroom scheme, offering lively contrast with clean-lined furnishings and a restrained palette of warm walnut tones.

“The drapes frame the expansive view while adding movement and a sense of personality, but the neutral palette keeps the look sophisticated,” he adds.

To keep patterned curtains from feeling too dominant, David recommends restraint and proportion. “Often that means limiting the palette, even if the pattern itself is bold,” he says. “In bedrooms especially, I gravitate toward motifs inspired by nature — botanicals, abstract organic forms, or geometric patterns with some softness to them.”

And even busy patterns can be quelled with the right fabric choice. “Linen blends, cottons, and textured weaves diffuse light beautifully and introduce softness, whereas overly shiny fabrics can sometimes feel too formal or energetic for a space meant for rest,” he adds.

The good news is that drapes don't have to be expensive to look expensive; it's about knowing where to shop for curtains with a designer look and how to hang them in the most interesting ways — and now you do.

Windows are one of the most important elements in a room, but they’re also one of the trickiest to get right. A one-size-fits-all approach to framing your view rarely works: blinds need to be custom-made, curtains have to be hemmed and hung ‘just so’, and the accompanying hardware often has to be individually tweaked. Get your windows wrong, and the whole space ends up looking awkward or slightly bare, or, at the other end of the spectrum, too fussy and a little overdone.

For modern window treatments, take your inspiration from countries like Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. “Scandinavians are, quite simply, light-worshippers,” says Kai Price, co-founder of Att Pynta. “Their interiors are designed to maximize and celebrate natural light, rather than obstruct it.” Scandinavian design is so often celebrated for its pared-back aesthetic, with the calm mood directly influenced by the region’s light and landscape.

So, what are the Scandi-inspired window treatments that interior designers are loving now — and how should you make them work in your own space?

1. Linen Drapes

Sometimes, the simplest window treatments are the best way to go. “The Scandi distinction between beautiful and basic is key, though,” says Theresa Obermoser, founder of TO Design Studio.

“Basic is a neutral curtain because you didn’t think about it, whereas beautiful is a neutral curtain chosen exactly because you’ve considered every alternative and instead allowed your drapes to disappear into the wall,” she explains. “Don’t let your curtains punctuate the room as a separate object, allow them to read as a continuation of the surface.”

Neutral colors work beautifully for simple curtains, but don’t instinctively opt for a generic shade of white, beige, or gray. “Find a linen curtain that matches the paint shade on the surrounding walls,” Theresa instructs. “The result will be quieter, softer, and far more grown-up.”

To make linen drapes work most successfully, fix your curtain track as high as the window frames allow. “This is the single move that will make your room feel taller and more considered, especially in a period building where the ceiling height is already a gift,” says Theresa.

2. Venetian Blinds

In Scandi schemes, light is king. Forget their place name — Venetian blinds are an effective way to dress windows, as they can be pulled up to reveal an expanse of glazing, closed to block out light, and adjusted using their cords to provide a combination of settings as brightness shifts throughout the day.

“Away from corporate headquarters, Venetian blinds are excellent at filtering light and offering privacy in a controlled yet relaxed and informal way,” explains interior designer Olivia Bossy. “When chosen in the right color, they become almost part of the architecture, creating a simple, reassuring rhythm.”

To make them look like a considered design choice rather than an anonymous option, choose a set with wider slats. These feel more ‘architectural’ than ‘office’, creating an ordered look that ticks the Scandi boxes of understatement and simplicity.

3. Forgo Window Treatments

If you’re lucky enough to have amazing windows, why bother covering them up in the first place? “One of the principles we admire most in Scandinavian interiors is their confidence in making architecture and the views the most important thing,” explains interior designer Sophie Pringle, who chose to leave these windows totally clear of coverings.

“When you have an incredible panorama, adding heavy window treatments just distracts from what is effectively a living artwork,” she says. “Leaving your windows uncovered allows natural light to flood a room and strengthens the connection between the interior and the landscape beyond.”

This is an excellent option if you live on a rural property or somewhere with particularly wonderful views, but works just as beautifully whenever you’re not overlooked by neighbors. Even if the vista beyond is simple greenery, giving your windows some room to breathe will fill your space with light.

4. Roman Blinds

“The lesson to take from Scandinavian interiors is to keep window treatments simple, natural, and tactile,” explains Kai Price, co-founder of Scandi design destination Att Pynta. “Roman blinds work particularly well as they provide softness and texture without visually overwhelming a window.”

For a relaxed effect, use a lightweight fabric in a neutral shade. Slubby, almost rustic linen will diffuse light gently and create a calming look — the material gets a thumbs up in our pick of the best curtain fabrics according to designers, too.

“Roman blinds are not about making your window a decorative statement,” says Kai. “In Scandi-inspired spaces, the focus should always remain on framing the light and the view beyond.”

5. Window Film

When it comes to window treatments, bathrooms can be one of the more head-scratching spaces in a home. Full-length drapes aren’t practical, but roller blinds can seem too simplistic. Window film (like this reeded style from Dunelm) is an unsung hero in these spaces, and many Scandi homeowners love this adhesive solution.

“Window film preserves privacy while still letting soft natural light into a room,” says Aleksandra Cannock, founder of TAK Architecture and Design Studio. “It keeps the glazing calm and elegant, resulting in spaces that feel bright and quietly refined.”

“The solution also supports the broader Scandinavian qualities of light, restraint, and practicality all working together without any visual clutter,” the London-based designer explains. “It’s integrated and considered.”

6. Wave-Fold Curtains

Scandi design is all about calm, but curtains can often feel like a very decorative choice. Rather than focusing on patterned fabric or drapes in a bright color, it’s best to consider more structural elements to deliver visual interest.

“Curtains with a wave heading can soften the appearance of large areas of glazing while finishing and dressing your space beautifully,” explains Kashi Shikunova, founder of the Scandi-inspired YAM Studios. “They have a soft, clean, and elegant drape that complements a space without overwhelming it.”

“This is particularly important as expanses of glass can sometimes feel cold or stark, especially in the evening,” says Kashi. “Not only do wave-fold curtains add texture to an interior, they can help insulate it, soften the light, and improve acoustics.”

7. Cafe Curtains

“Light is precious in Nordic homes,” says Dorothea Gunftoft, award-winning writer, curator, and author of New Nordic Design. “Cafe curtains work beautifully in Scandinavian homes as they offer privacy without sacrificing any of the brightness.”

This style of window treatment, therefore, is most effective in rooms where this really matters. Street-facing kitchens and bathrooms are ideal candidates for cafe curtains, as these practical spots benefit from brightness without exposure to passersby.

“They soften a room without the heaviness of full drapery, too, creating a slightly nostalgic look,” explains Dorothea. “Overall, cafe curtains are practical, romantic, and unfussy, which is a very Scandinavian combination.”

8. Roller Blinds

“The beauty of Scandinavian window treatments lies in their simplicity,” explains Nanna Liv, creative director of interior design studio House 44. “Roller blinds frame windows rather than dominate them.”

This style of window treatment is also one of the most flexible, working just as effectively on large windows as miniature ones. This makes rollers a wise choice in rooms with multiple sources of light.

“Keeping everything tonal and understated creates a calm, elevated look,” says Nanna, who opted for a simple white sheer textile for the roller blinds in the London project above. “This allows light, architecture, and materiality to take center stage.”

From maximizing light to balancing privacy with practicality, the Scandinavians offer much inspiration for well-designed windows. The region’s unique relationship with daylight (and darkness) makes it well worth paying attention to Scandi-inspired window treatments.

My spring so far has been predominantly defined by finding window treatments that block out light and add privacy without feeling overly heavy or dominating. However, if you look hard enough (and I did), many curtain brands offer double roller blinds with prints, linen layers, and in the latest color trends, so you can easily find a double roller blind that works with your room.

"Because the fabrics can be set to different heights, you can stagger them to create depth," adds Kate. "Pair them with dramatic curtains that span the full height of the window to instantly create a space that feels luxurious."

It's about building a solid base, kind of like building a capsule wardrobe. "I recommend choosing a neutral color so you can easily add it to your existing interiors, whether you have a bold and vibrant space or something sleek and minimal," Kate notes.

There are so many options when it comes to dressing your windows for spring. You want privacy, but also for your space to be bathed in light during the day, as well as blocking out light completely early in the morning. Other options include sheer Roman shades and top-down, bottom-up blinds — and often it involves layering more than one.

When I first saw this colorful home cinema, it wasn't the cleverly concealed screen or massive mint-blue sofa that caught my attention (though both are feasts for the eyes). No — it was the soft wall of pale pink sheer curtains covering the brick wall behind the sofa. What an interesting design choice, I thought.

Speaking with the designers, I discovered that the decision to decorate with sheer curtains was about preserving the heritage-listed brick wall while transforming the room's atmosphere. "The pink tone was carefully chosen as part of a color palette in response to the client’s admiration for Wes Anderson, whose distinctive style often balances nostalgia with playfulness," interior designer Sophie van Winden, co-founder of Owl Design, adds.

And, even better, I've found a way to get the look in your home for as little as £15. IKEA's STENFRÖ Sheer Curtains come in a very similar soft pink (as well as six other colors, including green, turquoise, and dark blue), and while most would think to style them on your windows, as this space proves, there are so many more possibilities.

This home cinema room is located in a listed mid-century property, which became the starting point of Owl Design co-founders Sophie van Winden and Simone Gordon's plans. "Preserving the integrity and visibility of the original brickwork felt important," Sophie explains. "Rather than concealing it, the curtain was introduced as a soft, permeable layer that allows the texture and history of the bricks to remain visible beneath."

The pink hue wasn't a whim, either. "It was adds a subtle theatricality — again echoing the influence of Wes Anderson — while the translucency maintains a dialogue with the brick behind, creating depth and a layered, almost cinematic backdrop." The result, she says, lets "the space honour its architectural past while introducing a contemporary, expressive element that feels intentional rather than purely decorative."

And it does more than look the part. "The curtain transforms the room both visually and functionally," she adds. "Acoustically, the fabric helps soften sound, making it far more suitable for film viewing without compromising the character of the space. Visually, it brings warmth and cohesion, shifting the room from a daytime playroom into a more immersive, atmospheric cinema setting."

It's clear that decoratively, drapes can do so much more than just cover your windows. They can be used to subtly divide spaces in open-plan layouts and even replace doors, while adding curtains behind your bed introduces the sort of softness you want in a sleep space.

And if you're not using them to block out light, sheer curtains add an ethereal feel, while ensuring sightlines aren't completely blocked, which means less visual weight and unwanted bulk or heaviness in your space.

Before getting granular, though, it's best to start with the bigger picture.

"When selecting fabric, I’d advise considering the feel you want to create and the effect your material choice will have on the overall scheme of the space," shares Lucy Bathurst, a textile designer and founder of east London-based studio Nest Design. "Decide whether you're seeking a look that feels natural or more luxurious, something pared back or more ornate. Generally speaking, the simpler the style of curtain or fabric, the more contemporary it will look."

Louise McGarry, creative director of Studio Braw, agrees. "Our approach is very much driven by the overall narrative and atmosphere of the space, with both aesthetic and functional considerations playing a role," she says, adding that the visual language tends to lead. "We always begin by considering the tone of the room: in more formal or architectural settings, we’re often drawn to richer, more structured cloths," explains Louise McGarry, citing velvets, silks, or weighty linens as a way to bring depth, tactility, and a sense of quiet luxury. "These fabrics hold their form beautifully and contribute to a more composed, considered drape."

"If you want to create a lighter, more ethereal quality, particularly in spaces that call for a softness of light, we tend to introduce sheer curtains," she adds. "Ultimately, we’re always looking at how the fabric interacts with light; how it sits within the broader material palette; and how it enhances the spatial experience as a whole."

"If you're designing a kitchen or bathroom, you need to think about how the fabric will react if it gets wet," notes textile designer Lucy Bathurst. In fact, fabric of any kind is often considered a big kitchen window mistake.

"Linen and cotton will most likely stain, but wool can be a great choice for these areas because it is inherently water resistant... think of all those sheep withstanding soggy British winters," Lucy adds.

If you're choosing a fabric for privacy or sun-screening, you'll need to bear in mind that the conditions will change from day to night. "During the day, a relatively transparent voile will allow you to see outside while screening you inside," says Lucy. "After dark, when the light source is stronger indoors, it would be better to rely on either a thicker voile or a secondary curtain or blind for privacy."

Lucy also cautions against silks. 'Using natural silks for windows can be a risky business because light naturally breaks down the fibers over time," she explains. "So, although silk curtains can look spectacular, I would only suggest them in very particular circumstances."

How Fabrics Effect How Curtains Hang When Stacked

"It's worth remembering that the more gather you have in a pair of curtains, the more bulky the curtains will be when they are stacked to each side," says Lucy, referring to the amount of fabric used to create each curtain, relative to the width of the window.

Depending on the amount of room you have on either side of your window, it might affect which curtain fabric to choose. "Some fabrics 'stack' better than others, which means they drape well," Lucy adds. "Wools and linens are usually among the better curtain fabrics for this because they form folds very happily, whereas some thicker, stiffer fabrics will resist being forced into pleats."

Louise also emphasizes the importance of understanding your chosen curtain fabric's inherent characteristics and how these will present over time. "Much like a linen suit, linen curtains do tend to crease and hold those creases quite visibly," she warns. "That quality is part of their charm, but it’s something we always consider in relation to the overall aesthetic we’re trying to achieve."

In more tailored or formal settings — where a crisper, more controlled finish is desired — Louise will often lean towards curtain fabrics with a bit more structure or stability. "Ultimately, it’s about aligning the materiality of the fabric with the expectations of the space and the client’s sensitivity to those more nuanced, lived-in qualities," she explains.

As for Lucy's favorite curtain fabric, "I would choose wool, and British wool, if I could," she shares, without hesitation. "It looks wonderful and behaves angelically," she adds. "Wool is inherently fireproof, as well as water and rot-resistant. It's great to work with, and it’s ecologically sound to boot — what’s not to love? It really is the original wonder cloth, and our country’s history is entirely steeped in it."

Sheer wool is a particular favorite of Studio Braw's: "Dedar’s wide wool sable, for instance, has an incredibly refined handle and diffuses light in a gentle, atmospheric way that feels both contemporary and timeless," says Louise.

"In this study, the pink paint was drenched across the walls and joinery, so we needed a curtain material with an off-white background to reintroduce lightness into the scheme," she explains. "I love this Titley and Marr fabric; it instantly evokes spring. The floral pattern dancing across the fabric brings a sense of joy and movement to the room."

"Avoid at all costs in large blocks what we call 'heat' colors for the bedroom," warns Lindi Reynolds, founding creative director at Lindi Reynolds & Co. "That's reds, oranges, and yellows in their primary, saturated tones."

Colors on the warm side of the color wheel (especially when more pigmented) tend to energize and create drama, which is not always the best idea for a space that calls for calm. "'Heat' colors are fine if included in the hero print or in accent pieces to spark joy, but generally speaking, we are looking to create calm havens of sleep and restoration in the bedroom — a full emersion of these colors can be a little too heady," adds Lindi.

Muted variations of these colors, on the other hand (think pink, blush, and soft yellow), fit nicely into the calming, comforting category. "Just be smart with what you pair them with to keep the theme sublimely beautiful, for they will be the support feature, not the main event," says Lindi.

2. Overly Cool or Stark Colors

In a similar vein to overly-saturated warm colors, "When choosing curtains for a bedroom, it's generally best to avoid colors that feel overly cool or stark as well," says James Gomez, co-founder and creative director at Yarn Collective.

High-contrast colors (while great for conversational spaces like living rooms and kitchens) can make a bedroom feel less restful. "Instead, warmer, more earthy and natural tones tend to work best for bedroom curtains," he adds.

Rather than crisp whites and cool-toned neutrals, opt for grounded colors such as terracotta, sienna, or warm copper hues, which are full of warmth, energy, and comfort. I always think they work when they quietly connect to the wider palette of the room."

Translated through curtains, London-based upholstery and curtain expert, Pat Giddens, says it looks like "raw or loosely woven fabrics — think handloomed linen, hemp, cotton gauze, muslin, vintage fabrics, velvets, reusing old velvets, antique linen grain sacks, antique laces and trims, or globally sourced textiles, mixing stripes or clashing patterns."

However, it's more than just choosing a minimalist materials. "For me, it’s about the honesty of materials and how they respond to light and use over time," says James Gomez.

Rather than being concerned with perfection, it's more about texture, tone, and how the fabric moves and falls. The key lies in texture and tactility: natural fibers like loosely woven linens or slubbed cotton or fabrics with an irregular weave that soften and age beautifully over time.

We all know that long, floor-sweeping curtains have a certain romantic, dreamy quality to them; there's no question about it. There is a question, however, about whether this look is always completely functional, especially when a radiator is involved.

The real drama that comes with choosing a long style of curtains is that you're going to block your radiator. Radiators are positioned under windows to help effectively heat your home, but putting a curtain in front will actually block them from efficiently heating your room.

So, no, you shouldn't, but more than that, there's a solution to your problem. Our experts break down navigating the complicated relationship between your curtains and the radiator.

Should Curtains Cover Radiators?

So, let's really get into the question we're all here for: should your curtains cover the radiator?

It's a question that brings in a conflict between aesthetics and functionality, a spot none of us wants to be caught in. As Matthias Silverton, an interior design consultant and curtain design specialist at The Snug Co., says, "It forces the owner/designers to make a choice between aesthetics against thermal efficiency. While sweeping, floor-length drapes look beautiful and polished, and make ceilings look higher and more grand, they are a major energy mistake."

The reason this design is seen as such a huge error is largely down to the impact it will have on your home's energy efficiency. "Rather than warming the surrounding space, the heat becomes trapped behind the curtain against the wall, meaning the rest of the room will feel much colder than it should," explains Rosella Marzocchella, interior designer at Decor & Decor.

Reducing the area within which the radiator is able to circulate heat essentially renders it useless, and by wintertime, you'll find yourself shivering in regret. But the reduced flow of heat is not the only way this design choice will impact your home's energy usage. "In addition to reducing your comfort, it forces your heating system to work harder, which can result in additional energy usage and, therefore, increased heating bills," Rosella says.

She also notes that the effects can be dependent on the specific curtains you use. "Curtains that are too thick can also block or sometimes press against the thermostatic radiator valves, which are inaccurate in their readings, so if your heating is inconsistent, curtains could be the culprit." (It could also be your radiator cover that is blocking heat, if you have those, too.)

Although both designers acknowledge the obvious visual appeal of long, sweeping curtains, they ultimately agree that this is a bad choice. As Matthias says, "A great interior design has to create designs that are first and foremost functional and comfortable, so short, thermal efficient curtains should always win."

However, if you are really desperate for these dramatic curtains, the experts recommend pairing them with tiebacks and making sure they are secured when the heating is on.

What's the Ideal Length for Curtains?

We now know that dramatic, radiator-covering curtains are a big no-go, but that doesn't answer the question of what length our curtains actually should be, instead. Should curtains touch the floor, skim it, or be nowhere near it?

It's not a simple decision to make. As Rosella notes, "There’s a real science to curtain length, and a miscalculation can result in the space feeling all wrong." In most circumstances, she recommends floor skimming styles, or at most 1-2cm of excess for that puddling look.

However, while this is the preferred look for visual effect, Rosella acknowledges that the presence of a radiator can throw off the efficacy of this rule. She says, "If you have a radiator below a window, I often suggest stopping the curtain at a minimum of 10-20cm above it or going for a full-length curtain with tie-backs, therefore allowing the heat to flow properly when it is being used."

When planning your interior design with energy efficiency in mind, the length of your curtains is a decision that will hold more weight than you may initially expect.

Matthias says, "For maximum heating efficiency, curtains should sit at least 3-4cm (about 1.5 inches) above the radiator. This allows the heat to freely circulate into the room." This, of course, will be impacted by the unique architectural features of your home. As Matthias goes on to explain, "If a deep windowsill or molding naturally projects the curtain away from the wall, it's often a smarter choice to tuck the hem slightly behind the radiator. In this situation, the curtain should reach the top of the bracket behind the radiator to avoid bunching."

Different lengths can also help to create completely different aesthetics, with strong arguments for both long vs short curtains. For a romantic, coquette aesthetic, long, pooling curtains with tiebacks are ideal, whereas for a more contemporary, neat look, you may prefer a slightly shorter style.

However, Rosella says, "The biggest mistake people make is curtains that are just a touch short, which can throw the whole room off. So if you have a doubt, err on the side of caution and go for the longer option. You can always get them hemmed shorter. And remember to always measure the drop from the curtain pole (not the very top of the window) when you measure to get the correct length."

Livingetc's editor Hugh Metcalf has another point of view, however. "I would never recommend dictating the length of your curtains based on allowing heat to escape them. If this is going to cause you problems in your home, I'd instead suggest layering window treatments so that it's not an issue," he says. "So put a Roman blind in your window along with curtains framing them aesthetically," he suggests.

Is It Safe for Curtains to Touch Your Radiator?

The experts have made it very clear that having your radiator covered by curtains is certainly a bad idea in terms of your energy usage, but I know what many of you are thinking: Is it dangerous?

Well, as Matthias explains, "The risk comes down entirely to the heating element. Modern hot water radiators are safe because they don't reach ignition temperatures. If your heater runs on electricity, however, curtains become a serious fire hazard and must be kept clear."

The main risk of this common curtain mistake is towards the quality of your curtains, and even the surrounding materials, like your walls, all of which are liable to warping over time after constant heat exposure.

"From a safety and maintenance point of view, it’s always better to avoid direct contact between fabric and radiator," says Rosella, "Even if there’s no immediate danger, it’s just not good for the curtain’s lifespan, or your home’s heating efficiency."

Your Curtain Essentials

So, while there are plenty of curtain hacks that work to solve your curtains vs radiator conundrum, it might just be worth following curtain trends you adore, and finding another way around the issue, such as layering your window treatments.

Curtains can cost you a lot or very little, and considering that either way it's just a bunch of fabric, you might be wondering how some look luxurious and weighty, while others look flimsy and inferior. The devil, my friend, is all in the details. It's the choice of fabrics, the folds, the header, and little tricks like this £8 roll of curtain weight tape from Amazon.

It seems simple, but often the best things are. Designed to be sewn into the bottom lining of your curtain, you can choose between varying weights — 30g, 50g, and 100g — and can easily cut the cord to your desired length. Not only will it make your curtains look more expensive (there's nothing cute about crumpled), but it will also prevent your curtains from flaring or billowing in the breeze, bringing in any dust and dirt it picks up on the way.

Plus, if you've got a little leftover after you update your curtains, you can just as easily use this weighted cord on the edge of tablecloths, shower curtains, duvet covers, or anything else you want to subtly weigh down in place. Clever, huh?

Why It's Wise to Weigh Down Your Curtains

Weighting your curtains is particularly important if you're using lighter fabrics such as linens or sheers, which are more likely to crinkle and flare without any weight. It will also enhance the silhouette of your curtains, ensuring crisp vertical lines (adding in a quick steam first is also never a bad idea).

That's certainly not to say that heavier fabrics such as wool or velvets don't also benefit from weighted tape, though. The last thing you want is for these more voluminous fabrics to balloon out, so adding in a little weight can help to keep them structured and sitting just right.

But if sewing a leaded tape through the hem of your curtain seems like far too much hassle, there are alternatives, such as these magnetic curtain weights, although they certainly don't look as seamless, so I'd say that taking the time to do it properly will be worth it in the long run.

If you’re adding curtains to a wall with architectural quirks (a French door, say, or a gap between multiple windows), the instinct might be to have individual, separate solutions. However, Caroline Mills, head of interior design at Zulufish, disagrees with this approach.

“It can be tempting to try and disguise these gaps and irregularities, but incorporating them into the window dressing actually makes the whole composition feel much more generous,” she says. “Curtains serve as an architectural element in their own right, and their placement is, in my opinion, more important than the color or pattern.”

“In this project, we extended the curtain across the full length of the wall to allow the eye to travel without interruption,” she adds. This has the added benefit of looking smarter when the curtains are closed, too. “There’s a sense of enclosure when they’re shut, making the whole room feel softer and more cocooning without ever losing its sense of elegance,” explains Caroline.

2. Add a Wow-Factor Valance

In this London project, 2LG Studio transformed curtains into a design statement. “We wanted to draw the focus towards the windows and so made a wiggle-style valance to create the structure and form you see here,” Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead, the studio’s founders, explain. “The result is perfectly sculptural. We now refer to valances as ‘skirtens’, or skirt curtains. They are super contemporary.”

The wave-style modern pelmet idea is playfully echoed throughout the rest of the dressing room, proving that curtains look their best when they’re planned into a scheme rather than added in as an afterthought.

To create a luxurious look, the pair extended the curtains. “We transformed them into a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling style,” they explain. “Making your curtains as wide and tall as possible helps to make the window appear larger and more luxurious.”

“To avoid any sense of flatness, always select complementary textures for the two curtains,” Mohamed advises. “Ensure your hardware is strong and streamlined so that it can support both layers without looking or feeling bulky.”

In more architectural spaces, curtains can be used to soften the overall look and feel of a room. A floor-to-ceiling sheer can have a delicate but no less impactful effect on a space. “They fall in a way that feels light and fluid, so they’re perfect for balancing sharper or more architectural spaces,” says Melissa Hutley, co-founder of Hutley & Humm. “They blur lines and have something of an ethereal quality.”

These are not the sheer curtains of old, however. “There’s a move away from just plain white sheers as we increasingly use them to add pattern, depth, and movement in a way that’s still understated,” adds Melissa.

While including blackout window treatments in these spaces may come from good intentions, you can end up actually stifling your options. Instead, "choose window coverings that provide privacy and soften natural light without shutting it out completely," recommends Heather.

For instance, layering woven shades or sheers with blackout drapery or shades is a smart way to balance flexibility and room-darkening functionality. The lighter woven or sheer layer softly filters daylight and provides privacy during the day, while the lined drapery or secondary shade can be drawn for complete darkness when needed.

According to Chloe, the season might also dictate whether you go light or dark with your curtains. "Brighter tones definitely suit the spring and summer seasons more, but you can still make them cozy with thermal and blackout lining," she says.

“Placement transforms blinds from an afterthought into an intentional design element that elevates the entire room,” explains interior designer Nina Lichtenstein. “Mounting plays a major role because it controls proportion, sightlines, and the way your eye reads the architecture. "The effect is architectural," she says. "You’re enhancing the proportions of the space rather than just dressing the glass."

And Ali Childs, founder of Studio Alexandra, agrees. “Mounting blinds significantly above the window — we have fit them to the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling in projects — will create the illusion of a taller window, and it will maximize the light.”

2. Go Wider Than the Window Itself

Well, while the design, color, and style don't necessarily have to be the same, Nina suggests fitting your window dressings at the same height.

“When you have multiple windows, align the tops of the blinds at the same height, even if the windows themselves differ slightly in size,” she says. “This trick creates a strong horizontal line that unifies the space. The room feels calmer, more ordered, and instantly more polished.”

4. Hang Your Blinds Inside the Recess

Of course, taking your blinds right to the top of your wall where the ceiling meets it might not feel right in every space.

So, if you’re looking for a more seamless and contemporary finish, Ali recommends hanging your blinds inside the recess.

“While mounting high and wide creates drama and elongates the space, opting to hang them inside the recess feels neat and architectural," the interior designer notes.

Whether it’s by opting for sheer blinds and blackout curtains or hanging heavier blinds and lightweight curtains, expert Ali says layering your window treatments can add style and substance.

“Layering with curtains can add softness and depth,” she adds. “Plus, it results in added sound and heat insulation along with a luxurious, layered look.”

As you can see, ultimately, blinds aren’t just about function. Instead, when mounted thoughtfully and chosen with intention, they become part of the design language of the room. "They can frame views, enhance proportions, and bring subtle sophistication to your space," Nina says.

This is exactly what Sophie P-Lefebvre of eponymous design studio, Sophie Lefebvre Design, has done with the project above, cleverly using dining room window treatments to create the effect of a large room by designing them to seamlessly blend in (and blur the lines) rather than play a standout decorative role.

"We created this look and enlarged the space by hanging them high and wide," says Sophie. "We mounted the rod at the ceiling, or as close as possible to it, and extended it beyond the window frame to create the illusion of taller and wider windows."

It was crucial to keep a clean line, too. "We used floor-to-ceiling panels, without excess pooling at the bottom, to create a streamlined, elongated effect," she adds.

Interior designer Leo Cesareo agrees that your best bet is to install the curtain rod as close as possible to the ceiling to enlarge a space. "This draws the eye upward, making the ceiling feel taller," he adds.

But it's not just about height. You want to extend across as far as you can width-wise, too. "This way, when the curtains are open, the view out the window isn’t covered, letting in more light and making the window feel bigger," adds Leo.

Sophie P-Lefebvre adds, "Whatever you choose, select a harmonious palette. Soft, light, or tone-on-tone colors blend with the walls and visually enlarge the space."

And it's not just about the color of the fabric, either. Using neutral hardware can also help remove visual clutter. "Ideally white," says Emilija, "so it blends into the wall."

"Light, fluid fabrics like linen or voile can be used like soft-focus filters, allowing daylight to trickle through the interior, and when chosen in tones that merge with the walls, they erase visual breaks and let the space breathe," explains Rachel Hurley of StudioHA. "Perception of space is key, and curtains can be the easy win that changes the way your space reads."

Anthony Chan of Chan Architecture agrees that sheer fabrics are best for increasing the sense of space in a room. "Light, semi-transparent textiles let daylight flood through while still providing softness and privacy, keeping the space bright and airy rather than closing it in," he says.

Heavier blackout curtains can have a cozy effect, but that is often the result of making a space feel smaller and more enclosed, or intimate. "Blackout curtains, especially in a bedroom, make it feel darker and more private, but can make a room feel smaller, as they limit the amount of daylight coming in," warns Jeremias Lim of ELC Architecture and Interiors.

4. Hide Bulky Rails Behind Recessed Ceilings

For this modern living room by Maniera, the ceiling was recessed around the windows — a strategy used to hide the bulkheads and give a cove-like effect.

"We opted to carry the windows straight up into the cove to appear as though they were continuing infinitely above the dropped ceiling," explains Cameron Bird of Maniera. "We added the draperies to also look like they are continuing into the ceiling. It makes the space feel even taller than it is, as the eye cannot tell where the window ends."

Flanking the fireplace were two narrower windows, which the designers dressed with drapery intended to remain closed, giving a tall, columnar-like feel that accentuates the height of the space and invokes grandeur. "The soft curves of the draperies also give a fluting effect harkening back to the idea of columns," adds Cameron.

5. Create a Sense of Seamlessness

"In this contemporary rear extension, we used a sheer with a recessed track and single stack for a streamlined, modern feel," explains Margot Warre of Modify Homes, who designed the space above. "This allows the room to open fully to the courtyard, blurring the line between inside and out."

Margot selected manual over motorized smart curtains for flexibility, too. "This gives flexibility in how each space is dressed and more control over light and privacy — especially important in a home where heritage character meets contemporary living," she adds.

When it comes to using curtains to make a room look bigger, it's important to think about the lines you're creating — both with their width and length. "Full-length panels that gently kiss the floor enhance vertical lines," explains Emilija.

Interior designer Leo Cesareo says it's what he obsesses over whenever choosing curtains for his projects. "Let the curtains slightly puddle on the floor," he adds. This adds luxury and polish, which psychologically makes the space feel grander.

Windows are notoriously overlooked in interiors — seen as all function, no form. But the truth of the matter is that they are so much more than that. Whether roller shade or layered drapery, your choice of covering can seriously elevate your space... or seriously drag it down if you opt for an outdated window treatment.

It's not necessarily that curtains are out of style, but certainly some styles are. And not paying enough attention to it? That's never a good look. "The window is a vertical canvas that can frame a view, add grandeur, texture, and complement the architecture," explains interior designer Alison Downey of DOWNEY. "Homeowners are now realizing how much character and warmth this element can bring, and designers are heeding the call."

Don't settle on a curtain or blind that is anything less than fabulous. Here are four outdated modern window treatments to avoid, and what designers would replace them with.

1. The 'No-Treatment' Treatment

The number one way to show you aren't up to speed on the latest curtain trends? Overlooking your windows altogether.

"Windows are having a renaissance in today's interior design trends, but too often, they’re still overlooked," says Alison Downey. And leaving your windows bare can often be a fast track to boredom.

"We work extensively in the Hamptons, and I’m always surprised by the absence of attention given to the windows in these grand, meticulously built homes," she adds. Solar shades alone just don't cut it.

Instead, Alison likes to take the opposite approach. Layered drapery combines texture, form, and function to create subtle drama in a space. And while heavy materials and fabrics can be beautiful in the right space, this look is easiest done with light materials like linen.

Try a double rod curtain idea or combine different window treatment styles. For example, Alison recommends "a textured Roman shade paired with an outside-mount ripplefold sheer drape, installed above the window frame, on a beautiful track."

2. Roller Shades

"I am ready to see fewer roller shades in residential projects," says Los Angeles-based interior designer Coco Greenblum.

While it's a practical type of blind, roller shades often feel commercial and cold in a home. "The material is limited by the mechanism, which requires a specific thickness and weave, leaving little room for warmth or texture," adds Coco.

And although it shares a similar mechanism, the Roman shade is still a definite 'yes' in 2025. "Relaxed Roman shades come up in my designs more often than not," says Coco. "They strike a perfect balance, neither too traditional nor too contemporary, while adding a layer of softness that complements a variety of interiors."

3. Eyelet Curtains

Next up on the interior design chopping block? Eyelet, or grommet, curtains — you know, the ones with the metal ring at the top for the curtain rod to go through. Interior designer Anna Kroesser of Kroesser + Strat Design says, "We’d love to never see a grommet curtain again."

"The grommets are distracting and don’t give off an elevated feel to the space," she adds. And while these are typically available ready-made and at affordable prices, Anna says, "In 20205, there are so many other options out there that don’t need to be custom."

So don't go for eyelet curtains just because they're accessible. Stepping up your style game doesn't mean you have to drastically change your go-to for where to buy curtains. "When shopping retail, back tab options deliver a more custom look without the price tag," adds Anna. "We also love a fabric roman shade; they’re functional, but the fabric gives another layer of texture without overwhelming the space."

4. Matchy-Matchy Cornice Boards

Interior designer, Yena Jung of By Yena Designs, says cornice boards (also known as pelmets) are another outdated window treatment in 2025. "I am simply tired of seeing a cornice board that matches the fabric of the curtains," she says.

There are other ways to make a floor-to-ceiling drape look great, and the cornice board often "seems overly contrived and takes away from the beautiful and intricate trim around a window," she adds. (Though we've seen some modern pelmet ideas that still work.)

If you are lucky enough to have decorative plasterwork or original crown molding in your home, you don't want to hide that behind a stiff board of fabric. Instead, Yena says, "Opt for floor-to-ceiling draping or any inset treatment that can be added as a complement to the overall design of the room."

In fact, having all your window treatments match in general is a bit dated in 2025. Instead, Yena recommends, "Roman shades that are inset into the window frame, and then add floor-to-ceiling drapery in a complementary look or design. This makes the entire room feel finished — you get a little drama from the drapes, but a relaxed Roman shade can look so comfortable and welcoming."

It’s a missed opportunity when windows aren’t given the attention they deserve. Once you've landed on a style, you can play with things like color and material. Just make sure to steer clear of any curtain colors going out of style after all this hard work.

Windows could always benefit from a bit of fabric, but while we agonize over the pattern and pleat, we very rarely ask ourselves another important question: Should curtains be long or short?

Not long ago, I would have died on the hill that your drapes should touch the floor. Short curtains, or so I thought, were reserved for cafe styles and in place of cabinet doors. Yet, when I asked interior designers for their thoughts on the long vs short curtains debate, the answers came back more divided than I'd expected. While interior designer Bradie Fisher says, "Nine times out of ten, long curtains are the way to go," Sophie Rowell, founder of Côte de Folk, says, "Short — every time."

So, should your curtains touch the floor? Or are short curtains making a long-awaited comeback? Or were they 'in' all along? Below, I get to the bottom of the long vs short curtain divide, and find out what works best and where.

When to Use Long Curtains

It's no secret that curtain trends almost always favor a long, dramatic drape. Something about a slight pool of the fabric just screams luxury — I don't make the rules. That said, there are specific ways to lean into longer lengths.

For instance, interior designer Bradie Fisher says, "Long length curtains will always instantly elevate a space, make the ceilings feel taller, and bring a polished, finished look to the room." So, when you want to increase the drama, long curtain panels will draw the eye upward and accentuate the room's height.

Virginia-based interior designer, Cathleen Gruver, adds that, "They're particularly effective in spaces with taller ceilings or as a curtain idea for large windows, helping to create a sense of grandeur and elongation." They can also visually 'stretch' a space, making it feel larger and more expansive.

From a functional standpoint, full-length curtains offer better acoustic dampening —significant in rooms with hardwood or tile floors — and improved insulation.

It's all dependent on what your space needs, and of course, your taste. "Even if the window is short, I’ll still bring the curtain to the floor," says Bradie. "It’s a simple way to add balance and keep things from feeling choppy."

When to Use Short Curtains

But with all the dramatic allure that long curtains promise, what room is left for short curtains in interiors?

Typically, short curtains refer to the French cafe curtain style that primarily hangs in small windows in kitchens, bathrooms, or breakfast nooks — anywhere you want a bit of privacy but still need natural light. "I love seeing short cafe curtains layered above eye-level in unexpected places, like in formal dining rooms or bedrooms, adding softness and privacy without covering too much natural light," Cathleen adds.

When done well, short curtains can feel nostalgic and even slightly European. But scale and placement are key. "If there’s no architectural or functional reason for them to be short, they’ll almost always look like a mistake," says Cathleen.

"It’s all about the styling and making sure they feel intentional, not like a hurried afterthought," says Bradie.

This trick, often referred to as “raising the eye,” works beautifully in both small and large rooms, and it’s especially transformative in homes with standard 8-foot ceilings. To make it work, opt for longer curtain panels—at least 96 inches is usually a safe bet for most spaces, though you may need more depending on your ceiling height. The designers’ verdict is nuanced. Sometimes, matching can be the right approach with modern window treatments, but only in specific circumstances. Otherwise, not matching is considered the better course of action. However, as you might well assume, cohesiveness between the different choices still remains important.

To further understand the niceties of matching or not matching your window treatments, and how to go about the latter successfully, I asked interior designers to share their expertise, which I've shared below.

When to Match All Your Window Treatments

Consistency can be a boon. “There are definitely times when matching window treatments throughout the home makes sense — especially in open-concept layouts, smaller spaces, or homes with a more minimalist or modern feel,” says Shea McGee of Studio McGee and McGee & Co.

Open-plan spaces and those with a restrained palette can benefit from matching, agrees Cate Gutter of CWG Design. But she adds, “While we rarely repeat window treatments across an entire home, if the right project called for it, we’d consider unlined linen panels or something equally soft and transitional. This works particularly well when windows align from room to room and the repetitive window treatment is a design foundation rather than a wow moment.”

Consistency in open-plan layouts can also benefit the exterior view. “Matching linings ensure your windows look just as considered from the street as they do inside,” adds John Smigielski, marketing and content director at British fabric house, Linwood.

And you might also choose to match your window treatments through a group of rooms. “In my own home, the kitchen, dining, and living areas all flow into one another, so I chose the same treatments throughout to create a visually clean and cohesive foundation,” says Shea. “By keeping the shell of the space consistent with paint and window treatments, I had more freedom to layer in personality through furniture, art, and accessories.”

When Not to Match All Your Window Treatments

While matching your window treatments suits some homes and design styles, there are often good reasons not to match. “Each space has its own light, mood, and function, and window treatments should match that rhythm,” says Cate Gutter.

“A bedroom might need blackout-lined Roman shades, while a breakfast nook begs for a sheer cafe curtain that lets the morning in," she continues. "Matching treatments in every room can dull the whole house’s personality. Worse, it can be impractical: what works in a cozy library might feel like overkill in a breezy sunroom.”

There are also other practical concerns that could be neglected through matching window treatments, especially with something like a bathroom curtain. “In areas such as bathrooms, a roller shade or wooden shutters will be more functional and durable over time,” notes interior designer Brianna Boidi of LDa Architecture & Interiors.

She points out that proximity to neighbors and public spaces is another reason to select different window treatments from room to room in order to safeguard privacy.

Consider, too, that as well as taking something away from the home as a whole, matching can detract from individual rooms. “Shifting textures and tone adds depth and individuality, giving every room a distinct, considered feel,” says John Smigielski.

While you can use different window treatments throughout your home, it requires a considered approach. “The goal is to strike a balance between variety and cohesion,” says Shea McGee.

Layering window treatments is often for practical purposes (such as layering sheer and blackout curtains), but it can also serve as a style factor. Below, we've shared some considerations worth factoring in when styling mismatched window treatments in your home.

Apply consistent principles

While it’s not a matter of keeping everything the same, some commonality is required.

“If we’re doing drapery, they all kiss the floor the same way, whether they’re made of silk, linen, or anything in between,” says Cate Gutter.

And don’t forget the details. “Hardware stays cohesive,” adds Cate.

We mentioned the appearance of your home from the exterior with matching window treatments, but even when they don’t match, it's worth keeping in mind.

“Consider how your window treatments appear from the outside — especially on the front of the home,” says Shea McGee. “A consistent silhouette or neutral backing can help maintain curb appeal.”

You should also consider the backing’s relationship to the outside of the house. Just like you think about whether your curtains should match your wall color, think about how they'll sit next to your home's exterior.

"For regular curtain poles I always use Made by The Forge. A thin black metal pole is the smartest look for both traditional and contemporary spaces," Pandora suggests. "For cafe curtains I like to use poles by Mark Lewis Interior Design – they’re really well made, simple but smart. It’s a lovely lightweight linen with a soft wavy pattern which works really well in the bathroom as privacy sheers."

Curtains are one of my favorite home furnishings. They hold so much potential and can truly transform any space into the space of your dreams, whether modern, cozy, or whimsical.

What I don't like as much, though, is taking them down to wash them. Which is why I want to know how to clean curtains without having to go through the fuss of taking them down, because who really has the time? Don't get me wrong, I love it when my curtains smell and feel fresh, but I always worry they will never be the same after cleaning. But that might just be because I don't know how to clean curtains properly, and spot cleaning may just be my saving grace.

So, to ease my cleaning sorrows, I spoke to a few experts to gather some advice on how to clean my curtains without taking them down, and here's what they had to say about it.

According to Muffetta Krueger, cleaning expert and founder of Muffetta's Domestic Assistants, spot-cleaning your drapes at home is fairly easy. Here's her trusty five-step method to return living room curtains to their best.

Step 1 - Identify the Fabric: "Before cleaning, check the fabric care label," she advises. "Some drapes may require professional cleaning, while others can be spot-cleaned at home."

Step 2 - Always dust: "Always remove surface dust with a vacuum or lint roller before treating any stains," she says.

Step 3 - Blot the Stain: Next, she tells us to use a clean, white cloth to gently blot the stain. While doing so, she warns against unnecessary rubbing as that might embed the stain further.

Step 4 - Cleaning Solution: "Mix a mild detergent with warm water, dab a small amount on the stain, and then use a damp cloth to rinse," she says. "After which you can allow the area to air dry.

Step 5 - Stubborn Stains: "For grease or oil stains, sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch, and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes," she says. "Then vacuum your drapes before using a mild soap solution to clean it off."

Alessandro Gazzo, a Cleaning Expert from Emily Maids says another way of cleaning your curtains without taking them down would be to "use a vacuum cleaner with a flat wide nozzle."

"I suggest combining this with an upholstery cleaner, if you have one, for spot cleaning. Start down at the top with one hand on your vacuum, and with the other hand, pull your curtain down to keep it flat and firm," explains Alessandro. "Run your vacuum from top to bottom and you can use the other hand to place it behind the curtain and move it as you go. Repeat until the curtain has been vacuumed completely."

Next, the cleaning expert says you should "run your upholstery cleaner over high-traffic areas (like the base of your curtain) or any areas where you notice stains or discoloration. Use the other hand to keep your curtain in place."

Alessandro says this method will take some time, especially if you run it all over your curtains. "If you don’t have an upholstery cleaner, mix a cup of warm water and 5 – 10 drops of dish soap, and use the soft side of a sponge to blot on the surface," he says. "Blot again with a damp sponge to absorb the excess and let it dry."

While the experts are in agreement that blackout curtains can certainly act as an effective tool for combating sleep issues, this does not mean that they are the only, or the best, option available.

Should your carpet match your curtains?

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to whether or not your bedroom or living room curtains should match the carpet. The general consensus from interior designers is that you’ll want to have curtains that work well with the space. 

'Curtains do not necessarily need to match the carpet; however, we do recommend them to be a color that is pulled from another element in the space,' says Andrea West, interior designer and founder of Andrea West Design.

What should you match your curtains to?

In terms of what you should match your modern window treatments to, our interior design experts say it’s not really about any specific element of the room, but more of the design as a whole. 'They should either tie in with the decor or go completely neutral so they soften the space but disappear in the overall design,' says Jennifer Stephan, interior designer and founder of Jennifer Stephan Interiors. 

On the flipside, Natalie Papier, interior designer and star of Magnolia Network show Artfully Designed says that while matching the color of your curtains to a rug in the same space isn't necessary, it can help achieve a seamless flow of your home's color story.

What kind of curtains go with anything?

If you’re looking for curtains that’ll match any room in the house, then neutral colors are the way to go. 'Neutral colors work with most everything: grays, beiges, taupes, and greiges,' says Claire Paquin, founder and principal designer at Clean Design Partners LLC. 'Smaller, more textural patterns can work in a variety of situations and pair well with almost anything.'

Darrell Gardner, director of product development at CORT, adds that shades are timeless and can serve as a backdrop that calls for other elements in the room to stand out — lighting fixtures, coffee tables, throw pillows, etc.

On the flipside, Paquin recommends trying to avoid putting too many patterns in a single space. 'If the rug has a strong pattern, then leave the drapery and other fabrics more textured and luxurious and vice versa,' she adds. 'Select either the rug or drapery to pop, but not both – too much will overwhelm the room.'

What types of curtain are on trend?

For those who live in loud and crowded areas including major cities or by main roads, curtains can help absorb the noise. This is particularly noticeable in heavyweight curtains, especially those that are pleated, which create a thicker barrier for sound to travel through.

What is the proper way to hang curtains?

After you find a set of curtains that you like, it’ll be time to hang them. Some people find this process to be a hassle, but it doesn’t have to be if you have the proper curtain rods. 'Our number one tip when adding curtains to a space is to mount your rod almost to your ceiling height so that you can have extra-long drapes that add height and drama to your space,' says Andrea West. 'Another visual trick is to mount your brackets 18 to 24 inches past your window so that when open, your curtains are clearing your window to make your space feel larger.'
