As a design writer, I spend a lot of my time looking at the most gorgeous, luxurious furniture in the world. But, for all the obvious upsides to this being my job, there are some downsides too. Namely, I've become a complete and utter furniture snob.

Really, though, it's only natural. After a certain amount of exposure, you just become accustomed to the finer things — but, every once in a while, something comes along to snap me out of this narrow-minded point of view. I recently had the pleasure of viewing Habitat's AW 2025 collection, inspired by jazz clubs and cocktail hours, but it was the Elio Fabric Armchair in Leopard that seemed to be singing its siren song to me.

It has a sleek, mid-century-inspired silhouette and a textured, beige chenille fabric in a leopard print that, surprisingly, somehow, reads more minimalist than maximalist. Could this be the gateway to decorating with animal print? If I wasn't already sold on the chair's stylish flair, its sub-£200 price tag (plus the fact it's on sale right now) made it an instant 'add to cart' piece.

I know shopping for seating online can be nerve-wracking (especially going out on a limb with something bold like animal print). Having sat in it personally, I can confirm it's certainly on the firmer side — it's more for engaged conversations than slouching back in comfort — and the quality of the fabric was pleasantly surprising for the price point. If you have an empty corner in your living space, this could be the jazzy addition you've been waiting for.

The design isn't necessarily the most groundbreaking, but the fabric is what really sets this chair apart for me. Animal print can be overwhelming, but this tactile iteration felt much more subtle and way easier to pair with existing pieces and prints.

It's neutral maximalism at its finest; an easy way to cheekily lean into the current trends while keeping a more refined and timeless edge. Which got me thinking about other decor that combines the texture-rich appearance of leopard, cheetah, and zebra with more sophisticated print interpretations. "I’ve always loved the idea of a dining setting feeling collected, rather than prescribed," interior designer Simone Haag tells me. The easiest way to mix and match your dining chairs is to start with one constant. "That might be the table itself, or a common thread in tone, materiality, or scale across the chairs," says Simone. Although we're going for contrast, there still needs to be a sense of cohesion and balance in the design.

"Think of it like a dinner party: the best ones have guests who are all interesting in their own way, but there’s still harmony in how they come together," says Simone. Another key is to play with repetition — either with a color palette that runs softly through the selection, or a sense that they are all speaking the one era.

A word of warning before you start styling your mismatched dining chairs: it's a fine line between intentional and chaotic. If the mix feels too haphazard, it can lack the visual impact you're seeking.

There are a few key considerations Simone recommends. "Consider proportions and seat height especially — the chairs still need to function as a set," she says. On top of that, "Avoid going too heavy on one side stylistically. The key is balance."

"One of my favourites has always been Arflex’s Botolo chair – the definition of an accent chair, especially in the fur finish. A close second would be anything from Carl Hansen — there’s nothing more classic, especially when introduced in a more traditional interior."

"Sundays are for Retrovius, as that’s when they release their latest stock," Christian explains. "They are a great way to introduce salvaged, reclaimed and vintage pieces into a home. You'd be amazed at what you can find. I’ve bought everything from boucle sofas to a chair that’s definitely more for looking at than sitting in. Keep notifications on for these guys for sure!"

"A forever favourite in the studio is Fiona McDonald," Christian says. "Where clients may not want vintage pieces in their home, and would prefer newly made, I always suggest they opt for pieces that will be classed as classics or worthwhile antiques in the future — ‘the antiques of tomorrow’, so to speak. The quality of her stuff is amazing too. I can’t fault it."

I have spent hours and hours searching for the most stylish accent chairs on the internet, and today, I'm applying that knowledge to swivel chairs specifically, a subcategory of seating best known for rotating tops and stationary bottoms.

Otherwise, 'I’d choose based on durability and how often a chair might be used,' she continues. 'An office chair would fair better with a vinyl, while a guest chair can handle a woven fabric.'

Fabric color could also come into play here. Something like black or brown leather should be easy to clean and quick to hide stains and marks. Same goes for a darker upholstery (though cleaning might be a bit more difficult in that case). In other words, if you're prone to spills or live in a house where a bit of mess if normal (no judgement here!) a white swivel chair might not be the best choice for you.

Chairs might just be my favorite aspect of home decor, and the lineup at this year’s New York City Design Week certainly did not disappoint. I think of seats a bit like dogs — sure, a Great Dane and a Maltese are part of the same species, but they look nothing alike.

From chairs crafted from fallen tree remnants to ones that seemingly defy gravity, I was dazzled by the variety of trends at NYC Design Week. I suspect you’ll feel the same. So, without further ado, here are my favorite seats I spotted around the city. None of them look anything alike — and that’s exactly the point!

 1. One Page by Ron Arad 

Just when I think the chair wheel can no longer be reinvented, an innovative design emerges that is so unique, so spectacular that it falls into a lane of its own. This is precisely how I feel about the One Page chair designed by Ron Arad in collaboration with artisanal design brand Moroso.

Best described as experimental, this armchair was inspired by a single sheet of paper in motion, hence its seemingly kinetic, almost wind-blown design. Its polyurethane "sheet" forms a continuous, soft, and flexible sculptural shape atop a rigid frame, eliminating the need for cushions or internal padding. Yet, it remains comfortable thanks to its expertly crafted, ergonomic design.

The result is a harmonious and futuristic seat, perched on a point-star swivel base that looks like it belongs in a spaceship — or at least on the set of a chic sci-fi editorial shoot. It comes in a variety of intriguing colors and textures, from leather to fur, but my favorite has to be the ombre gradient in red — so striking. 

 2. Catifa Carta by Arper 

Arper’s iconic Catifa 53 chair, originally designed in 2001, received a stunning upgrade at this year’s NYC Design Week with the introduction of the Catifa Carta — a sustainable version of the sleek, bi-curved silhouette we all know and love. Made from a new material called PaperShell, a composite wood byproduct, this chair is both innovative and eco-friendly. I had the chance to see how this remarkable material and chair are created.

The process begins with collecting timber waste from fallen trees, which is then transformed into a paper pulp. Bolstered by a 100% biogenic hemicellulose-based binder, the pulp mixture becomes 'kraft paper,' layered and pressed repeatedly until it forms the finished shell of the chair.

While the science behind the Catifa Carta might be complex, its design is refreshingly simple. Who’d guess that the shiny black seat was once a tree? It certainly makes for a killer conversation starter.

3. Ruff by Patricia Urquiola

Like One Page, the Ruff chair was also created in collaboration with Moroso, but this time designed by Spanish architect and industrial designer Patricia Urquiola. Featuring ultra-wide arms that almost seem to wrap around and hug its seat, it’s the perfect chair to bring comfort to your living room — a cozy spot to relax with a good book and a cup of tea.

Ruff is a delightful paradox of curved and straight lines, blending elegance with its seemingly gravity-defying silhouette and the practicality needed for everyday life. It's no surprise this conversational chair was designed by an architect, given its expert use of geometry, or that its plush construction was intended for the contract and hospitality sectors.

I imagine a Ruff sitting in the lounge of your favorite 5-star hotel — equal parts eye candy and a design-forward remote work seating spot you might never want to leave.

4. Low Back Metal Windsor Chair by Nickey Kehoe

Nickey Kehoe’s Design Week event stood out from the traditional exhibition format — in the best way possible. It marked the opening of the LA-based design brand's first East Coast location, a two-level, 4,000 square foot space that formerly belonged to American painter Jackson Pollock.

Equal parts showroom and homeware shop, the space was filled with worldly household objects, furniture, and decor. Amidst the artisanal soaps, tea towels, spirited guests, and a purple and teal checked reed bag (which I’ll be returning for later), one extra-special piece caught my eye: the Low Back Metal Windsor Chair. At first glance, it resembles a classic Windsor Chair, but closer inspection reveals it’s made of cast aluminum, expertly hand-welded, brushed, and painted. The natural irregularities and substantial weight give it an almost organic appeal — the sort of artisanal quality you’d expect from Nickey Kehoe.

The Low Back Metal Windsor Chair's low gloss finish makes it equally suited for indoor or outdoor use. It works beautifully as a summer dining chair or as an accent piece for an outdoor living room, and it can easily transition indoors when the party moves inside. I’ll admit its charm doesn’t fully translate in photos, but in person, it’s a showstopper. Available now for $850, I’ll go out on a limb and call it a must-have.

5. Suwari by HIDA

HIDA is one of the oldest wooden furniture companies in Japan, so it was only natural for it to collaborate with New York-based Studio Guapo and Pink Essay on Suwari, a lineup of wooden chairs. It's a masterful composition of vertical and horizontal lines, with each seat demonstrating Japanese sensibilities.

The aim of the Suwari chairs is to avoid burdening the floor, transforming the act of sitting into a harmonious, comfortable experience in dialogue with the rest of the room. What I found particularly interesting about all the seats, especially the Suwari Lounge Chair (pictured), is not what is present, but what is intentionally left out.

With no back, the chair offers an unobstructed visual line — more a suggestion of a chair than the chair itself. To me, this is minimalism at its finest.

There's nothing we love more than an IKEA hack, but flatpack revamps can be pretty technical these days. We're always in awe of the impressive built-ins people create from IKEA's (dare we say it) bland furniture, but not all of us want our DIYs to involve power tools. Sometimes, it can be as simple as some bespoke upholstery.

That's all it took to transform these off-the-shelf armchairs into a thing of beauty. Interior designer Ashley Montgomery was tasked with transforming the June Motel in Ontario's Beaver Valley, and as part of the project she gave these basic barrel chairs a high-end makeover. The finished result is custom-made, budget-friendly, and so easy for you to try yourself and tailor to your tastes. If you thought IKEA hacks had to be technical, think again.

The inspiration for this IKEA furniture hack was born after Ashley Montgomery and motel owners April and Sarah had their eyes on a set of beautiful chairs. 'We fell in love with a design by Greenrowe but unfortunately it was out of budget, so we decided to get creative and find a fabric that gave us that same wow feeling,' says Ashley.

To recreate a similar look, they started with two IKEA TULLSTA armchairs. While the Swedish homeware brand offers three colors to choose from, none have the charm or character the team wanted to bring to the lobby space, so they decided some pretty pattern was in order. 'This was the pop of color we needed in the space,' explains Ashley. 'The chairs now help to ground the art wall and have become a piece of art themselves. It makes a great statement in the room.'

They sourced the fabric from Lulie Wallace and had custom slipcovers made for the chairs by J&J Fabrication. The unique, one-of-a-kind result has helped them achieve the 'cozy country girl' aesthetic they hoped for thanks to the whimsy botanical print that ties the whole space together. In total, their thrifty project saved them around $2,000 per chair!

It's so easy to replicate the same idea in your home for a statement living room accent chair, too. The possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing the design of your material, and you could choose any chair that takes your fancy. If you're a dab hand at sewing, you could even make the slipcovers yourself, otherwise, send your measurements to your local seamstress to create your bespoke upholstery. There's no need to stop at one set of slipcovers, either. Having multiple designs stored away allows you to switch up your covers with the seasons - or your mood!

'Everyone has furniture they love but might not be your style anymore - but the bones are good,' explains Ashley. 'Hacks like this allow you to give pieces a new life and make it your own. This one allows you to get a custom-looking piece of furniture at a great price point - and fully unique to you.'

The dining room is a place to gather together your nearest and dearest to share meals, stories, and each other's company - occasions where everyone should be comfortably seated and able to enjoy the moment.

But when it comes to choosing dining chairs for your table, the question is do the dining chairs need armrests to provide the best outcome? It's a topic up for debate, and different designers have different opinions with the answer ultimately boiling down to preference and the ambience desired for your dining room.

So, how to decide if armrests are right for you? We asked designers to offer their guidance.

There’s no doubt about it, armrests do provide an additional support and comfort to diners, allowing them to relax and lean back into the chair at ease.

‘They’re ideal for long, leisurely gatherings and represent elegance and sophistication through their formal and refined appearance, this can elevate a dining room while also serving as a convenient resting place for arms and elbows,' Nina Lichenstein, founder of Custom Home Design by Nina Lichenstein says, making them the most comfortable dining chairs for all ages but especially children and elderly guests.

Bynn Esmond, founder and principal designer of Bynn Esmond Designs says she tends to select dining chairs with armrests for the host and hostess chairs: ‘It makes for a statement, and depending on their shape can be great conversation starters. They also provide support and a natural position for our arms to rest on.’ Resting your hands on the table can be portrayed as bad manners, so if this is relatable to you, armrests may be the solution.

What to consider

There are some practicalities to consider when it comes to armrests which may be game changers depending on your individual case. Chairs with armrests may take up more space around the dining table, limiting seating capacity and making it difficult to squeeze in additional chairs for larger gatherings, which can be an important factor if you have a small dining room. There is also less flexibility for diners, in terms of restricting movement and sliding in and out of the chair once tucked in especially in compact areas.

In Nina’s opinion, the decision to include armrests on dining chairs ultimately depends on the intended use of the space and the preferences of the homeowners, ‘In formal dining rooms or settings where comfort and elegance are paramount, chairs with armrests can enhance the dining experience and create a sense of luxury and refinement,' she says. 'However, in more casual or contemporary spaces where flexibility and functionality are prioritized, armless dining chairs may be a better fit, allowing for easier movement and greater seating capacity.’

You’ll often find armrests in a more traditional setting, whereas they may not always complement the aesthetic of the dining table or room decor, particularly in modern or minimalist settings where clean lines and simplicity are preferred.

In sociable dining situations, where the focus is on conversation and connection, armless dining chairs may be the preferred option. ‘Armrests can create physical barriers between diners, inhibiting natural interaction and making it more difficult to engage in lively conversation across the table. Armless chairs, on the other hand, promote a sense of openness and accessibility, allowing guests to move freely and engage with each other more easily’, says Nina. This can be particularly beneficial for larger gatherings or informal meals where sociability and camaraderie are key.

3. Finding the solution

By carefully considering the desired atmosphere, functionality, and aesthetic of the dining room, you can select the perfect dining chairs that enhance both comfort and sociability for gatherings to remember. Afterall, Liz Goldberg, founder and creative director of Carolynleona says, ‘Everyone’s needs differ, and function always comes first with seating!’

There’s something of an art about designing an accent chair just right. It needs to make a statement and have a distinct character of its own, but also be comfortable and pleasant to sit on for longer stretches of time. You don’t want it to be too matchy matchy with the rest of your furniture, but equally it needs to be versatile enough that it makes sense in the overall design scheme. All in all, not the easiest pieces of furniture to find.

However, at this year’s Milan Design Week I was pleasantly surprised to find numerous accent chairs that tick all the boxes. As we’re currently celebrating the best of Italian design with our Italian Issue for Spring 24, it was pure joy to see so many iterations of this staple piece at Salone del Mobile, and I struggled to pick favorites (even after sitting in most of them to check they truly were as comfortable as they looked – verdict: yes, they are!). Here are eight of the best accent chairs I saw and loved.

1. Minotti's comfortable Vivienne

You see this chair showcased at Milan Design Week and you immediately want to sit down and put your feet up. This colorway makes it easy to incorporate in any interior scheme, but it has such a beautiful shape that it will be a feature in itself. I love how the armrests are shaped like a hug, which makes you feel cozy and held, and the foot stool looks charming in its rounded shape. 

2. B&B Italia's origami-like Narinari

This beautiful origami-like shape was inspired by the sea eagle, an aquatic animal that is also capable of flight. The two shapes (backrest and seat) look almost like they're chasing each other, creating two interesting volumes that support you. A truly stand-out piece in a modern living room, make sure you showcase it to full effect and avoid mixing it with other pieces of furniture in the same, or a too similar color. 

'Two surfaces chasing each other as if in a continuous game, and as a pure expression of a mother nature ready to welcome us in an enveloping embrace,' explain the designers Tiziano Guardini and Luigi Ciuffreda. 

3. The minimalist-chic Mara from Calligaris

We've been talking about the new pretty trend recently, and this fits right in. This accent chair is simply perfect in its pure form, in a soft, comfortable fabric, and would look lovely in any interior, be that a living room or a bedroom. You can even get two and place them under a window, or facing your sofa. 

I love the subtle wood detail at the back, that looks almost like it's the spine supporting the backrest. And the plump, marshmallow shape gives it a friendly and inviting feel too.  

4. Perfect for lounging, Minotti's Kendall

You can sense the mid-century inspiration that's behind this chair, and it's giving it real presence. A slightly masculine mix of shape, color, and fabric, it is a classic piece that will look good now, and in many years to come. The leather will age well and give it even more character. Perfect as an accent chair in a home office. 

5. Baxter's joyful Stig

This made me smile straight away. I would definitely get two of these, and place a small coffee table in between. The Stig is inspired by the shapes and colors of the 70s, which is an interior trend we've seen a lot of at Salone. 

'I imagine it upholstered in teddy bear plush, inside a Danish space, with snow outside, in front of a blazing fireplace, or upholstered in leather in the colonial colour and coffee-coloured legs, inside a riad in Marrakech,' says designer Roberto Lazzeroni.

6. Porada's detailed and sophisticated Ginkgo

There's so much detail that went into this chair's design and it's all adding up to an elegant shape that makes you want to lean in and get a closer look at every seam and texture. 

To start, we have the simple frame in solid canaletta walnut which contrasts to the smooth brown leather shell. This has a beautiful curved shape and at the back, I love the V shaped seams, and slight cut into the fabric to give a glimpse of the backrest cushion, creating another element of contrast, in a subtle way. Simply perfect. 

7. Sculpture-like H2O from Gallotti & Radice

How interesting is this chair? The smooth material works perfectly with the subtle tan color and it's a testament to Gallotti & Radice's commitment to creating a collection that is all about harmony, and feels like it's 'caressing' our sight. 

I can imagine the H2O chair looking great in a hosting setting, maybe a cocktail party at home, with a drinks cabinet somewhere in the background, and a brass floor lamp next to it. And a marble side table with a crystal tumbler on top. And a tall plant. I think I've painted the picture for you. This accent chair will definitely make your home (and you) feel very sophisticated. 

8. Poliform's elegant Kaori

Soft lines, enveloping shapes and even more generous volumes. It's what Poliform wanted to express with the design of this chair, and I think they achieved that. The high backrest is tilted at just the right angle to make it very comfortable, and there's also a matching foot stool to go with it. It looks great too. You can pick from a variety of different combinations for the outer shell and seat, to really make it fit perfectly into your home's scheme.

It's something that's hard to pin down — an intangible talent for combining shape, color and material that delivers on that je ne sais quoi. So how do you approach mismatched accent chairs in a living room? We asked designers for their advice.

How to choose mismatched chairs in a living room

While you may be drawn to designs individually, it's worth considering mismatched accent chairs in a living room as a holistic exercise. That is, each piece you choose should have some relationship to the others in your arrangement. This is how you make these pairings feel intentional, not randomized.

For interior designer Cathie Hong, conceptualizing a seating arrangement starts with the couch. 'First, I think the most important piece is the sofa to meet the functional requirements of the room,' Cathie tells us. 'From there, I try to add in interesting pieces in different silhouettes, textiles, finishes and sizes, to create a collected and balanced look.'

For Cathie, this extends to the likes of accent chairs and stools, but also needs to extend to the wider living room landscape, as she found in the design of her own home.

'For our house, we needed a comfortable and large living room sectional for my kids (and us!) to watch tv, and a coffee table for my girls to draw (they are always drawing!),' Cathie says. 'I wanted to build in vintage mid-century pieces, so we sourced this coffee table from MidcenturyLA in Los Angeles. There are so many unique and boutique furniture makers out there that I wanted to showcase some of my favorites in my living room: the Elaine Chair from local The Long Confidence, the Stitch Stool from NY-based Eny Lee Parker, and case pieces by LA-based Faithful Roots.'

'I also wanted an oversized lamp to balance the size of this room, so we added a Knit-Wit Lamp by Made by Hand CPH, sourced through A+R in LA,' she adds. 'And last but certainly not least, an oversized plush rug to cushion my kids from the concrete slab floors from one of my favorite and ethically made Australia-based Armadillo Rugs.'

For Brit Epperson, founder and chief creative of Studio Plow, it's a case of looking for similarities, as well as differences, that can help ground mismatched accent chairs into a living room scheme. 'Find a common thread (or threads) and pull them through the collection for perfectly organized chaos,' Brit tells us.

For applying this idea practically, let's break it down by characteristic. By finding the similarities in certain aspects of your accent chair choice, you can then experiment with other elements while keeping things cohesive.

• Color — if color is the "thread" that keeps your mismatched accent chairs feeling like natural mates, it doesn't mean your chairs have to be the same color, but think about how your seating color scheme relates to each other. Tonal shades shared between the accent chairs and the couch are an easy way to make your choices hang together. And even if you're choosing color as your way to mismatch chairs, still think about a complementary palette. If you've got a green sofa, for example, look for good examples of colors that go with green to inform your choices.

Where should I start when buying furniture?

As with most things, it's a good idea to plan a bit before you begin buying furniture for your home. 'To start, draw a comprehensive floorplan of your house and map out the dimensions of each room to help you determine the best way to incorporate and arrange furniture that enables you to get the most out of your spaces,' Dave tells me. 'There are also some great home planner tools and design apps to help you visually plan out your spaces.' Make sure you measure hallways and doorways; you don't want to be stuck in a tight spot holding a heavy sofa that just won't fit.

And finally, 'do your research!' Dave advises. 'Before you actually head to the store (or buy online), browse through magazines or design sites (such as LivingEtc) to get an idea of the brands and styles you like. Read the reviews on these brands so you can be assured you are getting good quality products.'

It's Day 2 of the two day Way Day sales on Wayfair, and I've surprised myself by going into overdrive. There are lots of offers on furniture and home decor - and a lot if it is not...what I'd personally go for. But if you know how to shop it you can find some absolute gems. And Wayfair's selection of on-sale reading chairs has helped me fill the corner of my living room I've been wondering what to do with for ages. 

Reading corners are the big interior design trend of right now. We all seem to want a little area of our homes to curl up in, hunker down in and let the hibernation vibes wash over us. For me, the perfect reading chair needs to be comfortable, smart and either cocooning or angled slightly back so that you feel like you're reclining. And Wayfair is managing to answer all these requests right now.

As a wedding gift, some friends clubbed together and bought me a reading chair in a similar shape and style to this - I know how much it cost because I'd been bookmarking it for ages. It was just over $1000 (and it was quite a large group of friends who grouped together). I love it because the padded seat is so comfortable, the arms are so perfectly angled for resting on and the tilt of the back really helps you nestle in.

To match or not to match, that is the question. As the principal piece of furniture in a dining area - alongside the table - dining chairs play an essential role in the overall look, feel, and experience of the space. A new or upcycled set of dining chairs is an easy and relatively low-cost trick to instantly update a dining room. However, the wrong look can date it just as quickly. 

Current home interior design trends suggest matching chairs and tables are a thing of the past, but will the eclectic dining room look soon become passé, or is it here to stay? What are the pros and cons of dining chairs matching the table? And what should we look for when shopping for dining chairs? We asked the experts their opinion. 

When should dining chairs match a table?

‘Matching chairs and tables are often a good choice with traditional styles,’ says Killy Scheer, interior designer and founder of Scheer & Co. ‘If the furnishings are ornate or highly detailed, matching can ensure a cohesive look.’ Chaya Krinsky, head designer and co-founder of TOV Furniture agrees, especially if you want to achieve a formal, classic, or period aesthetic. 

‘Many shoppers consider matching dining chairs a fail-safe choice because they don’t have to worry about how it will look when it arrives,’ adds Chaya. While it may save you time and energy scouring the shops for the most suitable option, the proof of the “one and done” method is in the pudding - as they say. Interior design is more than just a lovely table or pretty set of chairs. A home’s decor should be as unique and interesting as its owner, offering insight into their personal and private world. So, what would a set of mass-produced, just-off-the-showroom-floor dining furniture say to guests about its inhabitants? We’ll let you answer that!

For Killy and most designers, the “matchy-matchy” look is an interior design crime. ‘We tend to steer clear of "sets" -- buying an entire living or dining room suite from the same place, all with the same style.’ Though she does cut dining chair and table duos some slack, ‘matching chairs to a table isn't risky -- it's when the table and chairs match the sideboard and console table, and the lighting is also in a similar style.’ Plus, Chaya argues matching dining sets can quickly look dated, ‘when you match exactly, specifically woods, I find it gives a non-contemporary look that can age the space, overall.’

How do I pair non-matching dining chairs to a table? 

Dining chairs don’t have to match a table but should combine. Chaya recommends using the style of the dining table as a starting point. ‘If you have a mid-century modern table, then maybe pair it with a set of chairs that play into that style, without completely matching,’ she says. 

Chaya also suggests playing with contrasting textures, finishes, and colors to create visual interest. ‘If you are mixing & matching, I love for either the dining table to be dark and the chairs light, or vice versa,’ she says. ‘I also love mixing different materials, like a wood table with a plush upholstered chair or a metal table with a wooden chair that might have a metal element in it.’ 

Avoid mixing wood finishes, ‘there are so many different species of wood that look completely different. The likelihood you do it well is low,’ says Chaya. Too much of the same material can feel overwhelming, and various textures are far more visually appealing and stimulating to the senses. ‘Overall, my rule is to mix an element of major texture with a flat element. That's how I do it in my own home, and I think it is really successful,’ concludes Chaya. Killy applies the same technique to her work: ‘if we're mixing chairs and tables, we ensure there’s a good contrast in the finishes. Too close, and the difference could look like a mistake.’

How about the dining chairs themselves? Should they match?

In short, no! There are three main possibilities when it comes to choosing chairs for your dining table: a neat, sophisticated single-style dining chair; a casual-looking, eclectic mishmash of different dining chair styles; one style for the side chairs and another for the seats at the head of the table (although that only applies to rectangular and oval-shaped dining tables).

‘It’s really fun to mix and match patterns and shapes of chairs,’ says Chaya. ‘Although, they should have one matching factor in either shape, style, or color for consistency.’ Killy likes to bring in head chairs that don’t match the rest of the dining chairs, ‘I just make sure there is cohesion in either the finishes or upholstery, so the end result looks intentional,’ she adds.
 

What to consider before buying dining chairs

‘Scale and composition are highly important. I consider furniture proportions and finishes,’ says Killy. It’s not all about looks! The scale of your dining chairs must also be compatible with the dining table size, as well as the material finish.

The first detail to address is the chair's height, allowing enough legroom space and an ergonomic seating position. This point is crucial when mixing and matching dining chairs to ensure all diners are seated at equal heights. As a general rule, there should be 10 to 12 inches between the underside of the tabletop and the chair seat. Dining chairs should also be able to be tucked under the table when not in use to maximize floor space and ensure the easy flow of the room. For an aesthetically pleasing look, ensure the back of each chair is taller than the tabletop by at least two inches. 

The width and depth of the chairs are just as important. Dining chairs should slide comfortably under the table with a couple of inches of space between them and without bumping into the table legs or base of a pedestal table. If the dining chairs are too close, diners will feel uncomfortable and cramped. 

Finally, regarding the material finish, consider how the dining chairs will be used and by who. If they’re for daily use or by kids in a pet-friendly home, a hard-wearing, easy-cleaning material is a must. Wood, (faux) leather, washable cotton or linen cushion covers, plastic, or acrylic are safe bets. Upholstered chairs in velvet or suede, for example, may be better left for formal dining rooms used on special occasions.
