Mid-century sofas hold a special place in my heart — I’m currently sitting on one as I write, in fact. But, as much as I love them, the pretty ones often cost a pretty penny. As an interior design- or DIY-loving parent, you might be sick of your kids tearing up your living room couch with spills, stains — or worse — fort-building. Indeed, nothing wears down a $3,000 sectional faster than a couple of sleepovers and some imaginative children with nothing to do on a rainy day.

Enter Nugget, the company behind the first so-called "play couch" on the market. In an attempt at creating a better futon, one that was easy to set up and move around, the geniuses behind this beloved brand inadvertently created a modular sofa that worked amazingly for curious toddlers, eager to climb, play, and lay on their parents' seating. The foam triangle pillows, base, and cushion, all of which are wrapped in a washable corduroy, microsuede, or double-brushed microsuede (your choice), are lightweight, soft, and infinitely reconfigurable — so your little adventurer can dream big (and build forts) all day long. If the reviews are any indication, it's one of the best sofas when it comes to young kids.

Now, you still might not display the Nugget (or a similar child-friendly modular sofa) front and center in your living room, but it would work excellently in a nursery, playroom, or basement, where function tends to dominate form when it comes to children's furniture. As a sofa expert myself, I wanted to take a dive into the specs to learn just how kid-friendly the Nugget really is. Spoiler alert: These people thought of everything.

There obviously isn't a traditional frame or seating suspension here, so to be honest, my spec deep dive wasn't all that deep. But what I was really curious about was the fabric and foam, considering this is a sofa meant for young kids. Surely parents will be concerned about flame retardants and off-gassing (for more on both, visit the "Sustainability and Wellness" and "Flame Retardants" sections of my best sofas guide). Well, Nugget got ahead of it all.

Design

It might not be everybody's first concern, but here at Livingetc, we want our wireless doorbells to deliver on curb appeal, as well as performance. And, in the realms of video doorbell design, I rate Blink well against our list of the best video doorbells.

It's a simple, minimalist style of video doorbell shared by more expensive tech brands, and particularly in the black colorway, it feels discreet enough to play a background role in your home's presentation. In summary — not as pretty as something like the Google Nest, but prettier than the Ring doorbell, in my opinion.

Set-up

The set-up process itself was particularly easy, in theory anyway. After downloading the Blink app, you use your device's camera to scan a QR code on the back of the doorbell, run through a few simple steps, including connecting to your WiFi network, and it's up and running.

In reality, I had a few issues getting notifications to pull through to my device on first set-up. Even when armed, notifications were irregularly registering in the app, both for movement and when the doorbell button was pressed. It's a problem that resolved itself in time, but caused a fair bit of frustration when first set up.

The physical installation is easy. The doorbell comes with a template for fixing to your walls, so as long as you're comfortable with a power drill you shouldn't have any problems installing.

I opted for the wireless installation route, but there's a guide for installing with existing wires. Better security and enhanced features might affect your choice in the wired vs wireless doorbell debate.

When you're looking to buy a Blink doorbell, you'll see options for the doorbell standalone, and one with a Sync Module. The price difference is $10 (both on sale and not), and while you might be tempted to take the cheaper route, you might find it proves a false economy.

Without the Sync Module, you'll need to pay a monthly subscription for storage, and you also won't be able to use the Live View on the doorbell when using it wirelessly. Without the sync module, or being wired in, you'll only get to use the device in Event Response mode, which means you can only view the camera live, and use the likes of two-way audio, when you catch a notification within 60 seconds.

Performance

Comparing it to Ring's operating system, the Blink set-up feels a little clunkier, and I found I had a few frustrations with the in-app experience, both in terms of operating the doorbell's settings, and interacting with the live view and notifications.

Unlike many other smart doorbell models, the Blink uses AA batteries over a re-chargeable battery when using it wirelessly. This may or may not be to your preference. It does mean less having to worry about recharging and having a spare battery to swap in while you do, but does mean keeping a store of AA batteries spare for when your doorbell does run out. The app gives you plenty of warnings about settings that may deplete your doorbell's battery quicker, but Amazon suggests your batteries will last two years on default settings — a different ballpark than the rechargeable battery models that tend to last a week or two. I haven't tested it for that long, however, and some reviews say that, realistically, some settings will drain the batteries after a few months.

Subscription

Blink offers you a 30 day free trial of its Blink Subscription Plan when you sign up. You'll need this if you want to store video from your doorbell on the cloud — whether you need this depends on whether you want it to act as a security device as well as an actual doorbell.

The Blink plan is $10 a month for a whole system, or just $3 for an individual product — meaning if you're just using the doorbell, it'll cost you half a cup of coffee to run for the month.

Our verdict

I've tested a fair few of the most popular doorbell brands, and in comparison, the Blink Video doorbell doesn't, necessarily, blow me away. Once you get used to the app interface, it will deliver on what you're looking for in a budget doorbell, however, so if you're looking for a simple entrypoint into adding smart features to your front of house, it's a price that's hard to beat, especially when discounted during one of Amazon's many sales.

If you have a little more to spend, the Ring doorbell is a better investment, in my opinion.

Sitting on the countertop, this is a subtle and stylish appliance. It’s bigger than some single-serve coffee makers, but that’s because it’s grinding coffee as well as brewing it.

The whole grinding process was no louder than 65 dBA, which is remarkable when you consider that the grinders are crushing what are effectively stones. If you’ll be using this early in the morning, rest assured, you won’t wake up the whole house.

After the machine had automatically ground coffee into my pod, I closed the lid on the pod with a satisfying click and inserted it into the top of the machine. This offers four different cup sizes – 4, 8, 10, 12 oz – and I tested them all.

Again, brewing starts at the touch of a button. There’s about a fifteen second delay before you'll see any coffee in your cup: for those who are coffee deprived, the delay can feel quite lengthy. It's especially pertinent if you live in a large household, because this only makes one coffee at a time. I can already imagine the morning queue for coffee.

However, it’s worth giving credence to lots of time-saving functions on the machine. These balance out the delay. The machine is a tidy grinder and close to effortless to clean. Fifteen seconds is also enough time to find a mug and place it underneath if you’ve accidentally picked up someone else’s mug.

I started with the smallest setting, which is 4 oz. This is too big for an espresso, it’s more like a lungo or a short black. The coffee came out at 201°F, which is almost too hot to drink. The brewing itself took under 20 seconds too, so I was worried the coffee would taste weak, bitter, and burnt. Miraculously, it was the opposite. From just one sip, I could taste that the bold and flavorful notes of coffee and hazelnut.

All of our experts were struck by just how strong this was too – it's perfect if you need a quick caffeine boost in the morning. The machine reached a maximum of 50 dBA when brewing, so it’s a really quiet and convenient machine to use: you wouldn’t need to raise your voice to be heard above it.

I went for a low cup to start with and experienced a little bit of coffee splashing into the back of the machine. It doesn’t drip between coffees, but if you have quite wide and low cups, keep a microfiber cloth (like this one from Walmart) close by.

It’s the same story with all the other sizes. Regardless of how long your coffee is, the Cuisinart uses the same amount of ground coffee, which I measured at 0.55 oz. As you might expect, this meant that the longer 12 oz coffees tasted a little weaker than the 4 oz. However in comparison to standard filter or single-serve coffees, these were exceptionally strong and packed with flavor.

I’ve never experienced quality like this from a single-serve machine. The authentic, artisanal flavors would rival espresso machines, so it’s a real treat for filter or pod coffee drinkers.

Should you buy the Cuisinart Grind and Brew

All good things come in threes, so I’ll say this for the third time, I’ve never made single-serve coffee that tastes better than this. Regardless of the size of my cup of coffee, the flavors were all bright, bold, and utterly delicious. If you enjoy single serve coffee, but want a bit more quality, this is perfect. It’s also better for the environment, because the pods are all re-usable. Similarly, if you drink filter coffee, but only need to make one cup at a time, this is an innovative take on standard filter jugs.

Start with customer reviews and ratings; in the absence of your own first-person experience, use other people's as your guide. Read the good reviews, but read the bad ones, too. And sort the review section from newest to oldest. If customers have uploaded photos, click through them all. Get a good look at how the sofa looks in reality, not just online.

I would always recommend sticking to brands you either have experience with or know are established, like Poly & Bark and Novogratz. If you want feedback off-platform, serach the name of the product plus "review" to see if there are any editorial reviews available.

Most importantly, keep expert furniture construction in mind. Most pieces won't live up to high end brands' standards, but it's a good benchmark if you're trying to separate quality from price.

"The top three features to lookout for when shopping for a sofa are frame construction, cushion fill, and upholstery durability," says Rebecca Andrews, vice president of category management at Article, an excellent furniture company based in Canada. "When it comes to the frame, it needs to be sturdy at its core. Look for corner-blocked, solid-wood frames."

"The core of your sofa cushions is also extremely important. Cushion construction typically features foam-wrapped infill to provide comfort. The foam is what will maintain resiliency over time so look for sofas that feature high-density foam with feather and/or polyester fill," she continues. "Keep in mind that most sofas will soften over time so you’ll want to find the right balance of foam to fill; if you start with too soft of a sit the sofa might not last as long."

Diane tells us: "An organized kitchen is one which is easy to use. What I mean by that is that the accessories are housed in such a way that anyone, even someone unfamiliar with the space, can come in and find what they need."

When I first wrote this article, I'd just found a viral hack that promised to make laying a rug under a couch, or a cabinet, a lot easier. I'd usually have had to move all my furniture out of the room to lay a new area rug, or even to take a rug up to clean it.

The solution, according to TikTok, was a 'ceramic tile lifter', which you can find on Amazon, which you can use as a 'jack' to lift your sofa so that you can place your floor covering with your ideal rug placement in mind. The promised result? An end to bunched-up rugs that never quite sit perfectly. Without it, the shape of the rug might end up distorted, or the edges won't sit flat – whatever the symptoms, you would have been sure to find me on my hands and knees trying to push out creases, vainly trying to get it to sit pretty.

However, nearly a year since I first came across this viral idea, I still hadn't invested in one. Why? The price put me off. They were just under $50 for a set of the two tile lifters — a relatively expensive solution to a once-in-a-blue-moon problem.

Since then, I've been keeping my eyes peeled for other solutions, too. Here's what I've found.

How do I get a rug under a couch without it bunching?

The original viral post by user Paola Medina (@mywellihousedecor) showcases a clever way to easily switch rugs under furniture like a bed or couch. While it's technically a ceramic tile lifter, Paola showcases how she uses it to jack up furniture so that she's hands-free and can easily lay the rug underneath before gently lowering the couch or bed back into place.

It's had nearly two million views, so it seems plenty of people out there struggle with the same rug problems I do!

However, at nearly $50 for a set, it's not a cheap solution to the problem, necessarily, especially a problem that doesn't come around too often. So what can you do instead to stop your rug bunching? The solution that I ended up choosing was a little different to Paola's jacks — and a little less expensive.

This furniture lifter tool, also from Amazon, is only $16.91, and arguably a little more functional for lifting furniture to lay a rug. It comes with a series of blocks so that you can even lift taller furniture on legs, which makes it more handy than the ceramic tile lifter, too. If you go looking for a different version online, just follow this one piece of advice — get one with a handle that's raised enough to properly lift furniture so that you can get a rug underneath. Some of them are just a little too shallow, though the price might be even more attractive.

My original solution to the problem was even more cost-effectve. While rug tape, like this from Amazon, is great for stopping the edges of a rug from sliding once laid, it doesn't necessarily stop bunching from heavy furniture legs. Instead, look for a rug liner, similar to this one from Amazon. This can be laid before you lay your rug down, and once you move the furniture back on top, it won't move an inch.

There's a downside - you really need to completely move your sofa or bed out of the way to do this (unless you've invested in furniture lifters), which can be tricky if you're trying to lay a rug in a small bedroom or small living room.

For my own home, and it's small bedroom where it's almost impossible to move the bed, these furniture lifters make a lot of sense, still.

Is there any chore more universally dreaded than that of folding your bedding? Neatly storing your duvet covers, pillowcases, and fitted sheets can be a nightmare (especially the latter). No matter how diligently you try to arrange them, a linen closet bursting at the seams with cascading cotton is inevitable.

Organizing your bed linen is the sort of task even professionals struggle with, but you can finally put an end to your struggles thanks to a designated storage solution that helps neatly fold and contain your entire bedding set. The LINENMATE foldable sheet organizer has gone viral on TikTok, and it's an absolute Amazon must-have if you struggle to keep on top of your laundry cupboard.

Here, I take a closer look at this genius little contraption and, with the help of some professional organizers, I explain why I think it should go straight on your Amazon wishlist if you want a more organized home.

You might already know how to fold a fitted sheet, but keeping them neatly organized once they're stored in your closet is a different story altogether. If that sounds familiar, this organizer might be for you, but how does it work, and is it worth your money?

Essentially, this storage bin unfolds to lie flat in a cross shape. From there, you need to fold your bedding - sheets, duvet cover and all - to fit within the confines of the longer length of the organizer so that they can then be neatly folded within the storage bin itself. The way you decide to fold your sheets isn't all too important, but you will need to opt for a longer oblong shape which will take several (neat) folds.

Next, you fold the material upwards starting from the bottom edge, turning it over twice to meet in the middle section. The top panel then folds over it, followed by the two edge compartments which meet in the middle to form a zipper. This will leave you with a box-shaped container with one edge displaying a small cut-out window and a label for you to add a name or room that corresponds with the sheets inside.

These free-standing, self-contained storage bins can then be lined up neatly within your linen closet or on your laundry room cabinet for an organized and clutter-free space. No more searching beneath stacks of bedding for stray pillowcases or making failed attempts to pair your duvet cover with the correct sheet - these handy little cases keep everything together to make your life easier.

So, what do the experts have to say? 'If you have an overflowing amount of linens in your utility room, it will always be hard to keep your space organized, but installing the correct organizers for your lifestyle and space can bring peace to your room,' says Di Ter Avest, professional organizer at Di Is Organized. 'More products don't always mean more organization, however, these "magic linen boxes" would be a good investment since they are visually appealing and make things easy on the eyes, eliminating visual clutter.'

If you already struggle to fold your sheets, however, this device could make matters worse. 'I really like the concept but feel it’s only realistic for those who already have very tidy closets and know how to fold a fitted sheet like a hotel housekeeper,' warns home organizer Kayleen Kelly. 'Those edges have to be really straight to fold well into the package, but if you already have a handle on your closet and want to take it a step further with an extra *aesthetic* flare — this product is great for you.'

If you struggle to keep sheet sets together, for an alternative folding method Kayleen recommends creating sheet “packets”. 'You use one pillowcase of the sheet set to hold the entire set,' she explains. 'It creates a little packet that you’re able to stack, plus, the sheets don’t have to be perfectly folded in order to stack (great for those of us who still “roll” our fitted sheets!).'

This recently occurred with Amazon's 5th Generation smart speaker reveal and left us wondering just why the company's 3rd Generation Echo Dot is still being sold alongside now two significant updates. Is the Echo Dot (3rd Gen) completely outdated, or is it worth investing in even in 2022?

The speaker was released back in 2018, which seems like a century ago, but we dug into the offering to determine whether it could still hold its own against the best Alexa speakers on offer today. Keep reading to see our thoughts.

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen): cost & availability

As said, the Echo Dot (3rd Gen) remains available to buy from Amazon and other retailers despite the fact that the brand has now released its 5th generation models of the Echo Dot, Echo Dot with Clock and Echo Dot Kids.

As you might imagine, the price of the 3rd Generation Echo Dot has fallen with every new release and now sits at $39.99 at full price (at the time of writing, the speaker is discounted and being sold for $19.99). In comparison, the 4th generation Echo Dot is $49.99 and the 5th generation has been released at the same price. If you want the newest Clock or Kids versions, it will cost $59.99.

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen): design

Amazon decided to completely revamp its smart speaker range, starting with the 4th Gen models, so the 3rd Gen Echo Dot looks a little bit like a relic in comparison to the spherical designs of today. The speaker is a flatter, puck-shaped device that looks more like the Google Nest Mini.

This difference in size and shape isn't necessarily a negative, as many would prefer their smart devices to be as small and unnoticeable as possible. The physical controls are also clear and obvious on top of the speaker, with a ring of blue light to indicate when Alexa has been activated. The 3rd Gen Echo Dot also has the same plastic and fabric combination as later models.

One plus of the older version is how much easier it is to change the cover or mount it to the wall. On Amazon, you can actually choose to buy the Dot with a wall mount or Mandalorian The Child stand. With multiple third-party options to choose from as well, the ability to customize the speaker perhaps makes it more appealing.

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen): audio & connectivity

The audio capabilities of the Echo Dot (3rd Gen) and Echo Dot (4th Gen) are close to identical, with a 1.6-inch speaker present in both. The only differences in output would be down to the size of the devices overall, so the 4th Gen model may be able to give a bit more oomph.

You can pair more than one Echo Dot (all generations) to create a stereo system, but if listening to music is important to you, you may want to opt for one of the best smart speakers that prioritize audio quality. The 4th Gen Echo (the larger, slightly more expensive flagship model) also has Dolby audio on board, and the much pricier Echo Studio sports Dolby Atmos.

Outside of this, the Alexa capabilities of all other Amazon smart speakers are present and correct for the 3rd Gen model. You will get the same updates, which means your other smart devices will also remain compatible. We'll note that this may not be the case forever, though, so you might want to opt for a newer model if you want to future-proof your home.

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen): our verdict

The Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) may not be new and flashy, but it's still a very capable smart speaker that happens to be quite a lot cheaper than the alternatives. With the Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) costing $49.99 at full price, the older Echo Dot is the most cost-effective option right now - especially when it's on sale.

If you're currently looking for your home's first smart speaker, we might recommend going for the 4th or 5th Gen models, but to those who want to expand their system or are wondering whether they need to update their 3rd Gen speaker, we would say that there's no need to go for the newest kid on the block. 

Both Blink and Ring video doorbells are systems owned by Amazon, with each brand fulfilling a different niche. While Ring is, undoubtedly, Amazon's flagship home security tech brand, Blink offers a more budget-friendly way to start building your smart home.

There are currently six widely available models of the Ring Video Doorbell, each with something a little different to offer. The Ring Protect subscription will set you back $39.99 per year.

Blink currently only has one video doorbell available, which is currently priced at $49.99 on Amazon. That's cheaper than any of Ring's offerings, with a subscription cost of $30 a year. It has just been released in the UK, but the US market has had it for a while, and plenty of other Blink products, such as indoor and outdoor security cameras, work well with it.

If there's one thing you should learn before Christmas rolls around this year, I think it's how to set up an Amazon wishlist. This feature might just seem like a way to pull all your Amazon shopping together in one place, but as a way to create smart gifting lifts that are intuitive, shareable and have clever features, it's pretty unbeatable. 

Okay, you also might not do all your shopping on Amazon, or you might find some things out in stores for a better price. The really good thing about Amazon wishlists is that there are some brilliant ways to use it that take all this into account, all while allowing the whole family to shop from the same list (meaning no duplicate gifts), especially for kids, and look beyond just shopping online. 

Now is the perfect time to get to grips with one, especially given Prime Day early access deals are available now, alongside Black Friday next month (did we mention there's also a clever hack to keep an eye out for the lowest prices?) Here's how you make one, and get the most from your wishlist. 

How do I set up an Amazon wishlist?

If you're going to do any significant amount of Amazon shopping, it's worth signing up for an Amazon Prime account. There's a monthly fee, however you can get it free for 30 days, and once you've ordered a few things, the free next-day delivery pays for itself. Plus, you get early access for Amazon Prime Day deals and Prime Video thrown in for good measure, which makes for a good excuse to check out some of their original content, including the new Lord of the Rings series. 

Once you're set up with an Amazon account, making a wishlist is simple. Head to Account & Lists in your account settings, and select Your Lists. There you can select Create a List, and choose a name for it, before selecting Create List. 

To update your shipping address, select the menu with three dots and select Manage List, before saving those changes. When purchasing from a wishlist, the buyer can decide to have it sent directly to you (without being given your full address), or to themselves, if they're gifting to you in person. 

You can then choose to share your wishlist with your friends and family. If you're only sharing with people you know, set it to Private, before inviting with email addresses when it will change to shared. This means only people with the link can see it. If you set it to View Only, those you've invited can only just see the links, if you change to View and Edit, they can add and remove products, as well as add notes and create a private group chat, which can be handy when multiple members of the family are shopping for kids, for instance. 

You can also set up an Amazon Registry for the holidays, which is searchable by your name and/or email address. 

Why should I set up an Amazon wishlist?

If you usually write up a Christmas list for friends and family, whether it's for yourself or for kids, an Amazon wishlist is the 'smart' evolution that avoids some of these problems, including back-and-forths over whether someone has got a present or not. This keeps it all in one place, and has plenty of clever functions to make getting on top of gift shopping easier. Here are just a few of them...

1. Avoid spoiling surprises

When you set up a list, Amazon will have it automatically set to "Don't spoil my surprises". While lists will generally remove anything that's been bought from it, this setting means they won't be for several weeks - just in case the list owner checks in to add some more ideas. 

This doesn't however, mean you'll end up with duplicate presents, as this setting will warn you if you attempt to buy something on the list that's already been purchased. 

2. Use it like a registry when out shopping 

Haven't you always wanted to do a gift registry likes in the movies, walking around a department store, zapping products with a price gun? Trawling Amazon looking for present ideas doesn't sound like a particularly thrilling task in comparison, but thanks to Amazon's barcode scanner, you can almost recreate this registry shopping experience. 

Open the Amazon app while you're out and about and select the scan option in the search bar. This will allow you to either find the product on Amazon by taking a photo of it, or by scrolling along to use Amazon's barcode scanner. Once Amazon has found the product, you can select Add to List and select the relevant wishlist.

3. Don't be limited to shopping on Amazon 

Okay, I promised you a way that Amazon's wishlist can work even if you're not planning to shop on Amazon. Here we go...

Problem one to overcome is making sure you have products on your list you want, regardless of whether they're on Amazon or not. If you install the Amazon Assistant extension on your computer, you'll be able to press the button when on another site, and add that product to a list on Amazon. 

Also, for people purchasing from an Amazon wishlist, there's an option to mark a gift as bought, even if they didn't buy it from Amazon, and instead bought it from another site or store. 

4. Use wishlists to buy when the price is low 

With Amazon holding sales over the next few month's, from Amazon Prime Day to Amazon Black Friday home deals, you might want to wait to purchase gifts until the price is at its best. These tips from Ed Shway, tech blogger for ByteXD, explain the best ways to make sure you get the best deal. 

'Create a separate wishlist for items from your friends/family wishlists to get notifications when the items go on sale, Ed tells us. 'You can get these notifications by installing Amazon's companion app. They aren't enabled by default, but you can turn them on from the app's Settings and enabling Your Watched & Waitlisted Deals.'

Outside of the Amazon app, Ed also suggests using Amazon price tracking sites, such as CamelCamelCamel.com. 'You can track the prices of items on your wishlist and receive price drop alerts via email,' Ed explains of the site. 'Camelcamelcamel.com is a popular free Amazon price tracker. Just go to their website, go to tools  and click on Wishlist Synchronization. There you can enter your Amazon Wishlist URL, select desired prices for alerts, such as when an item reaches a certain percentage off, and you will receive email alerts whenever there is a price drop of that amount.'

5. Add context with the notes feature

A wishlist can be a bit of an impersonal way to communicate gifts you'd like, that's why making use of the Notes function is a good idea. For the gift-list maker, it's a way to add some rationale to why these gifts would be much appreciated, while if you're using a wishlist to crowd source and manage ideas for kids or other family members, it gives those you invite to it the tools to share messages, without resorting back to texts or calls, keeping everything in one place.
