My husband and I have been trying to work out what to do with our outdoor space for years now — constantly going back and forth trying to make a decision on the layout and what elements to include where, never being able to reach a unified idea. I see so many gorgeous garden designs every day that I’m possibly the one to blame — often changing my mind after being served another dose of stylish inspiration. The fusion of style, quality, and a neat price tag can sometimes be hard to come by on Amazon. With that in mind, Livingetc's wellness writer, Amiya Baratan, admits she just can't seem to get to grips with ordering bedding from Amazon. "There are some trusty, well-known brands in the crowd, but I can’t seem to muster the patience to virtually verify the quality and scroll through pages of bedding to find one that I’d actually trust my sensitive skin with," she says.

While you shouldn't completely lose hope of finding fabulous Amazon bedding (trust us, Livingetc has done the research), it's certainly not the easiest buy if you don't look to brands you know and trust, like Christy's Amazon store.

INSTEAD...

On the other hand, Amiya says, "One of my favorite things to check out on Amazon is candles — even though it might require a little (or a lot) of patience to find a true gem." Amiya's current favorite (and most recent find) is this Hammam Scented Candle from RITUALS.

"As a Home Wellness Writer who is often writing about how to perfect the mood in your home, trust me, this candle is the perfect addition to your spa bathroom to scent-tually transport you to the Turkish baths," she says.

2. Blankets, Towels, and Textiles

Now, working in interior design means shopping for decor is indeed one of my favorite things to do. However, with sales happening across different retailers, Livingetc's renovation Editor Faiza Saqib says, "There are a few things I'd avoid buying from Amazon. The first thing I'd avoid? Textiles and clothing."

She explains, "There are so many sustainable brands that sell well-made textiles, which I believe are well worth the investment, and for me, personally, I just don't think Amazon hits the mark on that front." Not only that but without shopping directly from a trusted brand, it's hard to ensure the quality will be up to par.

As for things she'd buy? "Storage ideas! Like these LA JOLIE MUSE Storage Baskets that come in a set of three. They're great for storing away those stylish textiles, blankets, throws that you spent the extra budget on."

3. Large Furniture Items

I have moved flats several times over the last few years, and when you move that much, it's very tempting to order furniture from a one-stop place like Amazon. However Debbie Black says that is exactly why she steers clear of Amazon in these situations.

"Amazon is so jam-packed with anything and everything you could possibly want or need, but that doesn't mean it's the right place to buy some items," she says. In fact, so many options can make the decision-making process even harder. "I wouldn't, for example, buy a piece of furniture or large decor item on Amazon, unless it was from a brand I knew well, but then I would more likely buy direct from the brand."

Timeless furniture is worth investing in.

As for what Debbie does shop for on Amazon, "I would, and do, however, buy my problem-solving purchases, such as this bamboo knife drawer organizer for my kitchen."

"While I’ll happily turn to Amazon for the majority of my home essentials, one thing I’d avoid shopping for is smaller decor pieces, particularly art and prints," says Livingetc's design writer, Maya Glantz. There is no shortage of talented artists, all working tirelessly to create unique and beautiful pieces, many of which you can find at very fair prices, as well.

You can even try your hand at creating your own art with colorful framing DIYs, or by replicating the tiny art trend; these options make for a much more unique space. "I’d much rather spend my money on something made with passion and intention, as opposed to something you’ll find on every university hall's wall," says Maya.

While art is a strong no, "Amazon will forever be the first spot I turn to for any kind of tech appliance or smart home gadget," she adds. From hoovers to airfryers, Amazon will be the place to find the best prices, and let's face it, you can’t beat Prime's next-day delivery.

Maya adds, "Though if there’s something I’ve been eyeing up for a while, I’ll usually try to wait until Amazon Prime Day, as the larger appliances generally receive the biggest discounts, and if there’s one thing I can’t say no to, it’s a good deal."

This is also a relief for those who don’t live near an IKEA warehouse and find that the most sought-after pieces aren’t always available for delivery (or at least not in the quantities needed — curse you, BILLY.) IKEA on the other hand, offers a range of delivery options, including £5 to collect from a partner pick-up point (or free when you spend over £100), £30 for selected-day delivery, and £35 for express delivery (which is showing as a two-day turnaround). These prices are slightly less if you have a family account with IKEA.

So, which is better?
While as first the Amazon listing looks more expensive, when you consider the ease and cost of delivery included, it may end up actually being the better option.

It also means that when Amazon is having a sale, there is even more reason to keep your eyes peeled on your favorites in case you might be able to snap up a wishlist piece at a reduced price..

IKEA

IKEA on Amazon may be one of the more surprising brands we have come across, but we're here for it.

It is a limited selection of IKEA products on Amazon, and you may still find that items are cheaper to buy directly on IKEA's website, but there are still some amazing finds, particularly from their Stockholm Collection.

We recently wrote about IKEA's 2025 Stockholm Collection, which we all agree is their best yet, so we're watching to see if any of these get added to the store on Amazon, but in the meantime, we're crushing on these earlier Stockholm collection items.

Ruggable

Ruggable, one of the best rug brands, known for its high quality (plus a Livingetc favorite), has a store on Amazon. You can shop by style/size/collaboration (though not all collaborations are featured), and it includes a vast selection of their machine-washable rugs.

They are also child and pet-friendly rugs, as well as stain-resistant with a non-slip backing, all while looking incredibly stylish in the process. You can also 'follow' the brand's store on Amazon to stay up-to-date.

The Novogratz

While the latest Novogratz x Pooky Lighting collection is not featured on Amazon, there is still a selection of furniture and home decor available from the NY-based design company

Founded by Cortney and Robert Novogratz, the brand is all about creativity and character and the pieces are sleek and refined.

The Novogratz selection on Amazon includes rugs, vases, and furniture for both indoors and out.

Nathan James

The Nathan James selection on Amazon is full of accent lighting and furniture in mid-century modern, boho, and minimalist styles, many of which are currently on my wishlist.

Almost all items have at least a 4-star rating or higher with excellent reviews, which is not unexpected for this in-house crafted, design-forward brand, which caters to both indoor and outdoor living.

Loloi

Another Livingetc favorite, Loloi has a great selection of their rugs and throw pillows on Amazon, including Amber Lewis x Loloi and Jeremiah Brent x Loloi rug collaborations.

A rug is one of the best ways to center a space, while adding texture and layers, and Loloi is one of the brands that does this best.

Jonathan Adler

Finding Jonathan Adler's home decor items on Amazon was another pleasant surprise, and although not a vast selection, there are some noteworthy finds that you would be remiss not to bookmark.

There is, however, a big midsummer sale on Jonathan Adler's site right now, which is definitely not to be missed — and unless there are exceptional offers on the brand's items for Prime Day, you will likely find them cheaper on Jonathan Adler's site.

For example, the Jonathan Adler Gilded Muse Candle below is currently cheaper to buy directly, whereas the Mykonos Placemat is not available.

Yamazaki

Yamazaki Home knows how to do products that cater to a minimalist interior design aesthetic — design-forward meets practical with storage solutions that conceal or display, in style.

The Yamazaki Store on Amazon is filled with functional, space-saving, yet chic items from the Japanese brand, with products for every space in the home — because organization doesn't have to be boring.

LSA

I have lived in rental apartments for the past five years and found one of the hardest parts of living in a small space is that you'll most likely be without a clothes dryer. Hanging all your clothes on a rack in the living room is not an ideal setup aesthetically. And if you have more than one load to do, your damp clothes can intrude on the living space for days on end. In my hunt for a way to solve this issue, I came across a clothes drying rack on Amazon that scores big points for both its functionality and aesthetics.

Knowing how to dry laundry indoors really depends on your apartment, but most of the time, there is no way around hanging your clothes up. When space is at a premium, how to make the most of your small laundry room is not an easy task. In my apartment, the "laundry room" is a washing machine installed in the kitchen cabinets, so the drying has to be done in another room of the house.

As shown in the Instagram video shared by @herzenstimme, the rack's arms fold into the barrel base to become about a two-foot cylinder that can be tucked away into almost any drawer or cabinet when not in use. The legs fold out into a tripod to give the rack more height when drying your clothes.

"Probably the most beautiful drying rack and the most practical," she shares in the comments. "Absolutely cool, fits in a drawer, and can be cleaned up quickly. Practical for small rooms, but indispensable for me to dry find laundry on the hangers too."

Mid-century sofas hold a special place in my heart — I’m currently sitting on one as I write, in fact. But, as much as I love them, the pretty ones often cost a pretty penny. More Mid-Century Sofas From Amazon

As an interior design- or DIY-loving parent, you might be sick of your kids tearing up your living room couch with spills, stains — or worse — fort-building. Indeed, nothing wears down a $3,000 sectional faster than a couple of sleepovers and some imaginative children with nothing to do on a rainy day.

Enter Nugget, the company behind the first so-called "play couch" on the market. In an attempt at creating a better futon, one that was easy to set up and move around, the geniuses behind this beloved brand inadvertently created a modular sofa that worked amazingly for curious toddlers, eager to climb, play, and lay on their parents' seating. The foam triangle pillows, base, and cushion, all of which are wrapped in a washable corduroy, microsuede, or double-brushed microsuede (your choice), are lightweight, soft, and infinitely reconfigurable — so your little adventurer can dream big (and build forts) all day long. If the reviews are any indication, it's one of the best sofas when it comes to young kids.

Now, you still might not display the Nugget (or a similar child-friendly modular sofa) front and center in your living room, but it would work excellently in a nursery, playroom, or basement, where function tends to dominate form when it comes to children's furniture. As a sofa expert myself, I wanted to take a dive into the specs to learn just how kid-friendly the Nugget really is. Spoiler alert: These people thought of everything.

There obviously isn't a traditional frame or seating suspension here, so to be honest, my spec deep dive wasn't all that deep. But what I was really curious about was the fabric and foam, considering this is a sofa meant for young kids. Surely parents will be concerned about flame retardants and off-gassing (for more on both, visit the "Sustainability and Wellness" and "Flame Retardants" sections of my best sofas guide). Well, Nugget got ahead of it all.

Which retailer has the best deal?

As you can see above, both Samsung and Amazon were neck on neck for the TV prices as a standalone, but when I tested out the products by adding the bezel into my basket— Samsung had the cheapest deal with around $57.96 less for the 32" Class The Frame QLED HDR LS03C than the bundle on Amazon. In my basket directly from Samsung site, the bezel and Frame came up to $649.98.

Amazon's bundle seemed to be at a higher price point at $707.94. Giving Samsung the crown for the best deal overall for the 32" and bezel.

One way to reduce both the size and cost of your move is to 'start going through closets and drawers a few weeks before your move and looking for items you don’t use,' suggests Ashley Graber, co-owner at Cool Hand Movers. How should I pack for a move?

Design

It might not be everybody's first concern, but here at Livingetc, we want our wireless doorbells to deliver on curb appeal, as well as performance. And, in the realms of video doorbell design, I rate Blink well against our list of the best video doorbells.

It's a simple, minimalist style of video doorbell shared by more expensive tech brands, and particularly in the black colorway, it feels discreet enough to play a background role in your home's presentation. In summary — not as pretty as something like the Google Nest, but prettier than the Ring doorbell, in my opinion.

Set-up

The set-up process itself was particularly easy, in theory anyway. After downloading the Blink app, you use your device's camera to scan a QR code on the back of the doorbell, run through a few simple steps, including connecting to your WiFi network, and it's up and running.

In reality, I had a few issues getting notifications to pull through to my device on first set-up. Even when armed, notifications were irregularly registering in the app, both for movement and when the doorbell button was pressed. It's a problem that resolved itself in time, but caused a fair bit of frustration when first set up.

The physical installation is easy. The doorbell comes with a template for fixing to your walls, so as long as you're comfortable with a power drill you shouldn't have any problems installing.

I opted for the wireless installation route, but there's a guide for installing with existing wires. Better security and enhanced features might affect your choice in the wired vs wireless doorbell debate.

When you're looking to buy a Blink doorbell, you'll see options for the doorbell standalone, and one with a Sync Module. The price difference is $10 (both on sale and not), and while you might be tempted to take the cheaper route, you might find it proves a false economy.

Without the Sync Module, you'll need to pay a monthly subscription for storage, and you also won't be able to use the Live View on the doorbell when using it wirelessly. Without the sync module, or being wired in, you'll only get to use the device in Event Response mode, which means you can only view the camera live, and use the likes of two-way audio, when you catch a notification within 60 seconds.

Performance

Comparing it to Ring's operating system, the Blink set-up feels a little clunkier, and I found I had a few frustrations with the in-app experience, both in terms of operating the doorbell's settings, and interacting with the live view and notifications.

Unlike many other smart doorbell models, the Blink uses AA batteries over a re-chargeable battery when using it wirelessly. This may or may not be to your preference. It does mean less having to worry about recharging and having a spare battery to swap in while you do, but does mean keeping a store of AA batteries spare for when your doorbell does run out. The app gives you plenty of warnings about settings that may deplete your doorbell's battery quicker, but Amazon suggests your batteries will last two years on default settings — a different ballpark than the rechargeable battery models that tend to last a week or two. I haven't tested it for that long, however, and some reviews say that, realistically, some settings will drain the batteries after a few months.

Subscription

Blink offers you a 30 day free trial of its Blink Subscription Plan when you sign up. You'll need this if you want to store video from your doorbell on the cloud — whether you need this depends on whether you want it to act as a security device as well as an actual doorbell.

The Blink plan is $10 a month for a whole system, or just $3 for an individual product — meaning if you're just using the doorbell, it'll cost you half a cup of coffee to run for the month.

Our verdict

I've tested a fair few of the most popular doorbell brands, and in comparison, the Blink Video doorbell doesn't, necessarily, blow me away. Once you get used to the app interface, it will deliver on what you're looking for in a budget doorbell, however, so if you're looking for a simple entrypoint into adding smart features to your front of house, it's a price that's hard to beat, especially when discounted during one of Amazon's many sales.

If you have a little more to spend, the Ring doorbell is a better investment, in my opinion.

Cuisinart Grind and Brew: first impressions

Sitting on the countertop, this is a subtle and stylish appliance. It’s bigger than some single-serve coffee makers, but that’s because it’s grinding coffee as well as brewing it.

Rather than disguise the grinder in the sleek black body, Cuisinart has designed the bean hopper to sit at the front of the machine, on full display. If you like coffee, this gives the machine a café vibe, but it still looks chic and domestic.

A word of caution: I wouldn’t recommend storing your beans in this hopper for more than a week. You would probably get through them quicker than this anyway, but if you don't use them, exposure to the sunlight will degrade the coffee oils, making your drink taste bitter.

Considering the size, this is still relatively lightweight at 10.8 lbs. It's easy to move around, so you could easily slide it across the countertop to a less prominent position when it's not in use. However, if you’re thinking this will pack into a cupboard, think again. It takes up a fair amount of space.

Making coffee in the Cuisinart Grind and Brew

Thankfully, looks don’t deceive with this Cuisinart: it’s simply excellent to use and the coffee tastes even better. It all starts with grinding. You won't need to invest in a good coffee grinder separately, as it's built into the machine. Once the bean hopper is filled with coffee beans (I recommend Union), you can place one of the filters underneath and the will grind directly into your pod at the touch of a button. There are two places to store your pods – in the side and top of the machine – so if you can't find yours, check these storage spaces.

The conical burrs made some really consistent sized coffee grounds, promising smooth coffee flavors. The whole grinding process was no louder than 65 dBA, which is remarkable when you consider that the grinders are crushing what are effectively stones. If you’ll be using this early in the morning, rest assured, you won’t wake up the whole house.

After the machine had automatically ground coffee into my pod, I closed the lid on the pod with a satisfying click and inserted it into the top of the machine. This offers four different cup sizes – 4, 8, 10, 12 oz – and I tested them all.

Again, brewing starts at the touch of a button. There’s about a fifteen second delay before you'll see any coffee in your cup: for those who are coffee deprived, the delay can feel quite lengthy. It's especially pertinent if you live in a large household, because this only makes one coffee at a time. I can already imagine the morning queue for coffee.

However, it’s worth giving credence to lots of time-saving functions on the machine. These balance out the delay. The machine is a tidy grinder and close to effortless to clean. Fifteen seconds is also enough time to find a mug and place it underneath if you’ve accidentally picked up someone else’s mug.

I started with the smallest setting, which is 4 oz. This is too big for an espresso, it’s more like a lungo or a short black. The coffee came out at 201°F, which is almost too hot to drink. The brewing itself took under 20 seconds too, so I was worried the coffee would taste weak, bitter, and burnt. Miraculously, it was the opposite. From just one sip, I could taste that the bold and flavorful notes of coffee and hazelnut.

All of our experts were struck by just how strong this was too – it's perfect if you need a quick caffeine boost in the morning. The machine reached a maximum of 50 dBA when brewing, so it’s a really quiet and convenient machine to use: you wouldn’t need to raise your voice to be heard above it.

I went for a low cup to start with and experienced a little bit of coffee splashing into the back of the machine. It doesn’t drip between coffees, but if you have quite wide and low cups, keep a microfiber cloth (like this one from Walmart) close by.

It’s the same story with all the other sizes. Regardless of how long your coffee is, the Cuisinart uses the same amount of ground coffee, which I measured at 0.55 oz. As you might expect, this meant that the longer 12 oz coffees tasted a little weaker than the 4 oz. However in comparison to standard filter or single-serve coffees, these were exceptionally strong and packed with flavor.

I’ve never experienced quality like this from a single-serve machine. The authentic, artisanal flavors would rival espresso machines, so it’s a real treat for filter or pod coffee drinkers.

All good things come in threes, so I’ll say this for the third time, I’ve never made single-serve coffee that tastes better than this. Regardless of the size of my cup of coffee, the flavors were all bright, bold, and utterly delicious. If you enjoy single serve coffee, but want a bit more quality, this is perfect. It’s also better for the environment, because the pods are all re-usable. Similarly, if you drink filter coffee, but only need to make one cup at a time, this is an innovative take on standard filter jugs.

What to Consider When Shopping Amazon Sales

Reviews: How many reviews does the product have? How many are positive? Read reviews and look at the images. Discount 1 and 2-star reviews based on service, rather than the quality of the product — Amazon's retailers have a pretty good reputation for solving problems and offering returns where needed, and these poor reviews often come from trigger-happy buyers who don't wait for a resolution.

Style: When you spot a design you like, click through to the Store. You'll often find products of a similar style, and you can "follow" them to keep an eye out for other designs and new additions — it's a very useful shortcut for finding the most design-forward styles.

Materials: At Livingetc, we like the look for less, but not at the expense of quality. Look for solid materials, whether that's wood or stone, rather than laminated replicas. In textiles, too, fabric listings can help you make a guess at whether something is going to look as expensive in real life as it does on the site.

Discount: How much does it have off? If you missed Amazon's first Prime Day event of 2025, which ran its first-ever four-day-long event from July 8 through July 11 — that’s double the usual chaos — the next Amazon Prime Day will fall sometime in October.

Even the most experienced green-thumbs need a helping hand with their plant care from time to time, and there are myriad reasons for bad plant health, whether it's an inconsistent watering regime (that one's on you) or signs of a damaging leaf disease (for which you're probably not to blame).

Sometimes a little encyclopedic plant knowledge is all that's needed to remedy the problem and that's where your Alexa is here to help, all thanks to the introduction of some nifty new features. Here are four of the best Alexa skills to turn your Amazon device into a personalized houseplant care assistant.

1. Schedule watering regimes

We're all guilty of neglecting our watering regime every now and then, but if you're the type who needs a gentle reminder, why not ask your Alexa to give you a helping hand? Not only will your smart speaker inform you how often to water your houseplants, but it will schedule reminders too, so you never forget to feed your thirsty plants again.

As part of the new 'Plant Whisperer' routine introduced by the Amazon team, you can set up the feature in the Alexa app. If you want to take your plant parenting even further, you can also set up reminders to check on your houseplants - an especially pertinent task now that warmer weather is upon us.

'Alexa’s knowledge meets our love for plant care,' says Meryem Tom of Amazon Alexa. 'With the summer coming up, it’s the perfect time for our customers to have a play around with the new Alexa routine and level-up their plant care skills in the process.'

2. Whisper to your plants

While it might sound absurd, word within the botany community is that talking to your houseplants can actually boost their growth, and research shows that sound can have a positive effect on your plants. If you're a dedicated houseplant owner you might be doing this already (consciously or not), but if you don't have the time to chat to your greenery, you can ask Alexa to whisper positive affirmations to your plants instead.

To use the new feature, simply say, 'Alexa, be my plant whisperer' to hear your speaker whisper positive affirmations to your houseplants such as: 'Hi little plants, you're looking really green and groovy - I'm sending you good vibes to grow strong and healthy.'

It might sound unnerving, but psychologist Dr Sophie Mort says your indoor garden is bound to love it, plus the mindful action can have great benefits for us, too. 'Plant care is an incredible way to practice mindfulness,' she says. 'It creates feelings of comfort and relaxation as well as a sense of pride when we see the plants we tend to flourish.'

3. Answer your plant-care questions

We already know that Alexa has a wealth of encyclopedic knowledge that makes everyday tasks so much easier, but the Amazon team has recently improved the breadth of your smart speaker's houseplant expertise, too.

Alexa users can now ask over 35 new questions about their favorite house plants, including 'How much light does my Aloe Vera need?', 'How often should I water my cheese plant?' and 'How often do I repot my peace lily?'.

Depending on the answer, Alexa can also prompt you to activate a new featured routine that will create the optimum growing conditions for your potted pals. Next time you're wondering how to propagate your spider plant or which houseplants are best to clean the air, let your Alexa do the research on your behalf.

Many don't realize that Alexa devices are so much more than just a smart speaker. What are the best practices for shopping sofas on Amazon?

Start with customer reviews and ratings; in the absence of your own first-person experience, use other people's as your guide. Read the good reviews, but read the bad ones, too. And sort the review section from newest to oldest. If customers have uploaded photos, click through them all. Get a good look at how the sofa looks in reality, not just online.

I would always recommend sticking to brands you either have experience with or know are established, like Poly & Bark and Novogratz. If you want feedback off-platform, serach the name of the product plus "review" to see if there are any editorial reviews available.

"The top three features to lookout for when shopping for a sofa are frame construction, cushion fill, and upholstery durability," says Rebecca Andrews, vice president of category management at Article, an excellent furniture company based in Canada. "When it comes to the frame, it needs to be sturdy at its core. Look for corner-blocked, solid-wood frames."

"The core of your sofa cushions is also extremely important. Cushion construction typically features foam-wrapped infill to provide comfort. The foam is what will maintain resiliency over time so look for sofas that feature high-density foam with feather and/or polyester fill," she continues. Is Amazon bedding good quality?

As with any Amazon purchase, it depends on what exactly you buy. I would never discourage someone from buying Amazon bedding, but I would encourage them to read the reviews and investigate the seller before making a purchase. See what other customers say; does the quality hold up after a wash? Is the color the same as in the pictures? What about the texture? If you're not careful, you could end up with something cheaply made ... but do your research and you'll find a great option, no problem.

I used a $20 Amazon duvet cover for the last 3 years and had no issues with it. It was easy to wash, quick to install, and fit the duvet insert I already owned. I washed it regularly, but I didn't feel as stressed about stains or marks as I would with a more expensive purchase — and sometimes that peace of mind is even more valuable.

What bedding brands are sold on Amazon?

Amazon sells a range of bedding options and brands, all of which differ in price. For something a bit more dependable (or at least well-known), you might be drawn to Tommy Bahama, Eddie Bauer, Nautica, Bedsure, or Laura Ashley. Those options will likely be more expensive. But plenty of lesser-known brands that likely don't sell anywhere but Amazon are also quite popular — names like Jellymoni, Thread Spread, and Tosmo — and are definitely less expensive.

Should I wait until the New Year sales to buy Amazon bedding?

New Year sales aren’t a bad time to buy bedding — after all, new year, new bedding, right? There are always some top-of-the-year deals to be found. We hope these Amazon finds assist you with your kitchen organization journey. After all, an organized space is an easily accessible one, and Professional Organizer Diane Quintana from DNQ Solutions, LLC seems to agree.

Diane tells us: "An organized kitchen is one which is easy to use. What I mean by that is that the accessories are housed in such a way that anyone, even someone unfamiliar with the space, can come in and find what they need."

When I first wrote this article, I'd just found a viral hack that promised to make laying a rug under a couch, or a cabinet, a lot easier. I'd usually have had to move all my furniture out of the room to lay a new area rug, or even to take a rug up to clean it.

The solution, according to TikTok, was a 'ceramic tile lifter', which you can find on Amazon, which you can use as a 'jack' to lift your sofa so that you can place your floor covering with your ideal rug placement in mind. The promised result? An end to bunched-up rugs that never quite sit perfectly. Without it, the shape of the rug might end up distorted, or the edges won't sit flat – whatever the symptoms, you would have been sure to find me on my hands and knees trying to push out creases, vainly trying to get it to sit pretty.

However, nearly a year since I first came across this viral idea, I still hadn't invested in one. Why? The price put me off. They were just under $50 for a set of the two tile lifters — a relatively expensive solution to a once-in-a-blue-moon problem.

Since then, I've been keeping my eyes peeled for other solutions, too. Here's what I've found.

How do I get a rug under a couch without it bunching?

The original viral post by user Paola Medina (@mywellihousedecor) showcases a clever way to easily switch rugs under furniture like a bed or couch. While it's technically a ceramic tile lifter, Paola showcases how she uses it to jack up furniture so that she's hands-free and can easily lay the rug underneath before gently lowering the couch or bed back into place.

It's had nearly two million views, so it seems plenty of people out there struggle with the same rug problems I do!

However, at nearly $50 for a set, it's not a cheap solution to the problem, necessarily, especially a problem that doesn't come around too often. So what can you do instead to stop your rug bunching? The solution that I ended up choosing was a little different to Paola's jacks — and a little less expensive.

This furniture lifter tool, also from Amazon, is only $16.91, and arguably a little more functional for lifting furniture to lay a rug. It comes with a series of blocks so that you can even lift taller furniture on legs, which makes it more handy than the ceramic tile lifter, too. If you go looking for a different version online, just follow this one piece of advice — get one with a handle that's raised enough to properly lift furniture so that you can get a rug underneath. Some of them are just a little too shallow, though the price might be even more attractive.

My original solution to the problem was even more cost-effectve. While rug tape, like this from Amazon, is great for stopping the edges of a rug from sliding once laid, it doesn't necessarily stop bunching from heavy furniture legs. Instead, look for a rug liner, similar to this one from Amazon. This can be laid before you lay your rug down, and once you move the furniture back on top, it won't move an inch.

There's a downside - you really need to completely move your sofa or bed out of the way to do this (unless you've invested in furniture lifters), which can be tricky if you're trying to lay a rug in a small bedroom or small living room.

For my own home, and it's small bedroom where it's almost impossible to move the bed, these furniture lifters make a lot of sense, still.

There’s nothing quite like watching a TV show or movie with friends, but sometimes you can’t all make it to the movie theater together.

Fortunately, some of the biggest streaming platforms have an option to show multiple accounts the same content at the same time. So now you can enjoy a show or movie together from the comfort of your own home on the best streaming devices, even when geographically apart.

Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus all have built-in group-watching functionality, making it easy to watch while apart. 

And if the show you want to watch is on Netflix, HBO Max or Apple TV Plus, there’s a workaround that I’ll get to at the end.

How to stream movies online together

1. Disney Plus

Disney’s streaming service has a function called GroupWatch which does exactly what it suggests. 

Up to seven people can watch the same thing at once (four from the same account) with the footage synced: anybody can pause, fast forward or rewind as they wish, with everyone seeing the same thing.

There’s no chat, but users can respond to the on-screen action with a set of emoji. 

Simply head to DisneyPlus.com or open the mobile app, search for the title you want to watch and select the GroupWatch icon underneath the play button. Then use the ‘plus’ icon to get an invite link to share with others. 

Although this is done via a browser or the app, you can switch to a connected TV for the big-screen experience once everything is set up.

2. Hulu

Hulu’s version of this is the Hulu Watch Party, and once again it synchronizes video playback for everyone in the group — up to eight people — with full chat, so you can have a group commentary between friends. 

Do note that the feature is rated 18+, so only adults will be able to participate, and it’s only available in web browsers “at this time”. This makes sense given the text chat option, but still a pain for those who would prefer not to watch on their laptop or desktop.

Hulu says that “thousands” of movies and shows are available. You just need to find one with the Watch Party icon, which is three silhouetted figures with a play button in the middle. 

Just visit Hulu.com in a web browser, find a programme with the Watch Party icon and click it. Then click “Start the Party” and get a link to share with your friends via the chain icon.

3. Amazon Prime Video

With support for up to 100 people and text chat, Amazon Prime Video’s Watch Party is by far the most flexible of the official options, even if it could get a bit noisy in the accompanying group chat if you decide to hit that number.

It’s available in browser, on Fire TV, Android, iOS and certain ‘connected devices’. Not every show is supported, but Amazon lets you filter out the ones that aren’t by following this link, which should help narrow it down. 

To start, simply select the Watch Party icon (it’s like the emoji with a party hat and confetti) on the home page of the movie or show you want to watch. Type in the name you’d like for the accompanying chat, and then copy the link to send to friends and family. 

What about Netflix, Apple TV Plus and HBO Max?

Those are the official solutions, but what if the movie you want isn’t on any of them? 

The good news is that there are third-party browser plug-ins which give the same functionality to the likes of Netflix, Apple TV Plus, HBO Max and Paramount Plus. Like the official solutions, they sync playback and allow group chat to commentate on the action as it happens.

The big options are Teleparty (Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube, Hulu, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video) and Scener (YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Hotstar, Alamo on Demand, Shudder, Hulu and Funimation). 

Apple TV Plus is missing from the above, but is supported by twoseven. Alternatively, if you want to watch Severence or Ted Lasso with other iPhone, Mac or iPad users, Apple does let you watch together over FaceTime for a more intimate experience. 

For over a decade, Siri has been built into every iPhone made. While it may not be as flexible as Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa, the fact that it’s built into iOS makes it a really useful companion, giving you hands-free access to key functionality, and even introducing new skills.

The trick is knowing what to ask, because it can be very inflexible, and Apple doesn’t teach people how to use it effectively.

Yes, you can say “Hey Siri, what can you do” for some basic iPhone tricks, but that’s only scratching the surface. Here are five genius things that you can do with Siri on your iPhone to make your life easier.

Note that while this is written for iPhone, it should also work on other devices where Siri is present, such as your Mac or HomePod. Just be aware that some of the functionality won’t work as well when it’s not on a device that’s permanently about your person.

1. Find your Apple devices — including the iPhone you’re using

Because all your Apple devices are linked to the same account, you can use Siri on your iPhone to find them if you’ve misplaced them. 

Just say “Hey Siri, where’s my iPad?” and — assuming you haven’t let the battery go flat and it’s connected to the internet — it will play a loud sound on your tablet, leading you straight to it. 

This will also work for the Apple Watch (“Hey Siri, ping my Apple Watch”), and select other items in Apple’s Find My network. 

But what if you can’t find your iPhone? Well, you could ask your HomePod or MacBook to track it down, but if it’s in range you can say “Hey Siri, set a timer for five seconds” to initiate a near-instant alarm. 

And while it’s not actually intended for locating your missing phone, here’s a neat one I’ve discovered when I’ve dropped my phone down the side of the bed at night. Just say “Hey Siri, turn on flashlight” and your iPhone will light up, without disturbing your sleeping partner with any loud noises.

2. Quickly send photos and articles to loved ones

If your iPhone is the center of your social life, you’ll no doubt spend a lot of time sending photos, articles and music to friends and family.

Depending on what you’re sharing, this can take a fair few swipes and taps. But with Siri, you can share “onscreen items like photos, webpages, content from Apple Music or Apple Podcasts, Maps locations and more”, Apple explains.

As you can see, it’s largely aimed at Apple’s own apps, but it’s still handy. If you’ve just taken a great photo, simply say “Hey Siri, send this photo to Geoff” and provided “Geoff” is in your contacts list, a message will be automatically created for you to send right away. 

3. Get a quick translation in a hurry

If you’re somewhere where you’re not fluent in the local language, Siri can help by quickly translating a phrase for you. It can’t decipher what’s said in response, so it’s not suited to full conversations, but it should be enough for ordering drinks or getting simple directions.

It doesn’t work in all tongues, but the list of supported languages isn’t bad at all. You can translate phrases into Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian or Spanish.

You can do it one of two ways. Either say, “Hey Siri, translate ‘where is the park’ in Italian” or “Hey Siri, how do I say ‘one coffee please’ in German.”

4. Boost reminders with contextual cues

Setting reminders in Siri is dead easy, and one of the best-known features. Just say “Hey Siri, remind me to pick up sausages” and it will add it to a reminder list.

But it gets really clever when you add additional context. In its simplest form, this could be “Hey Siri, remind me to pick up sausages at 2pm”, but you can also make it location specific. So it could become “remind me to pick up sausages when I’m in Walmart” or even “when I leave the house.”

You’ll need to enable location services for this to work, but the possibilities are endless. Say a colleague reminds you to bring back a book they loaned you. Just say “Hey Siri, remind me to pack Brad’s book when I get home” and you’ll get a reminder as soon as you approach the door.

5. Find out what that song is

In 2018, Apple bought Shazam — the app that lets your phone identify a song by listening to an extract of it. You’ll probably have seen people using it in bars, pointing their phones at speakers to try and name that song.

It’s now built into iOS, and part of Control Center. But you don’t have to touch the screen to get it: simply say, “Hey Siri, what is this song?” and it’ll start listening right away.

When it comes to smart speakers, it's sometimes too easy to limit your thinking to Alexa and Google without looking at the bigger picture. While the smart speakers and displays from these brands are fantastic for most people, devices like the HomePod mini, from direct rival Apple, and the Sonos One, which features both of the aforementioned assistants, certainly give them a run for their money.

HomePod mini vs Sonos One: Pricing

The original Sonos One (Gen 2) with voice control comes in at $220, which is admittedly steep for a smart speaker. If you don't care about having Alexa or Google Assistant built-in, you can save a few bucks with the Sonos One SL, which is priced at $199.99. Meanwhile, the HomePod mini is cheap in comparison at $99.99, with in-build Siri but no compatibility with Alexa or Google. The new, larger HomePod, which replaces the discontinued original, starts at $299.99 - significantly more than Sonos' most expensive smart speaker.

HomePod mini vs Sonos One: Design

Both Sonos and Apple are brands known for their sleek and modern design styles, and the HomePod mini and Sonos One speaker are great examples of that.

While Apple's HomePod 2 is much more similar to the Sonos One in appearance, The HomePod mini is - well - more mini. Smaller, shorter, and with a spherical design, it looks closer to an Echo Dot but with an LED screen on top. This doesn't display anything, as such, but it lights up when you alert Siri with a question or command.

The Sonos One is much larger and more square, but this, in theory, lends itself to clearer audio (we'll go into that next). It also comes in just black or white, whereas the HomePod mini is currently available in black, white, blue, orange, or yellow.

HomePod mini vs Sonos One: Smart Assistants

When comparing the Sonos One and HomePod mini on smart home compatibility, it's hard to discount the convenience of Sonos' offering having more than one assistant on board. The HomePod range is tied directly to HomeKit and Siri - Apple's smart home platforms, but Sonos has the benefit of being a third party to the smart home wars.

Though Apple recognizes how the widespread use of its other products, such as the iPhone, encourages customers to remain within the brand's product ecosystem. In order to fully utilize the potential of one product, it is often recommended to purchase additional ones. This is where HomeKit speakers, such as the HomePod and HomePod mini, are beneficial. 

As a user of iPhone, our experience with HomePod mini testing revealed that employing HomeKit was a seamless process that effectively unified our technology.

We generally conclude that HomeKit is the most suitable option for Apple users, particularly for those who have Apple Music subscriptions and Apple TV. However, it is important to note that HomeKit has a more limited range of products available. Additionally, currently, it has less third-party product compatibility, but this may change with the introduction of Matter.

The upside to Sonos, meanwhile, is the choice you have. Both Google Assistant and Alexa have a much more third-party-friendly ethos and work with most (if not quite all) smart home devices you may have around the home. The fact that you can choose makes the Sonos One even more appealing.

HomePod mini vs Sonos One: Audio quality

Typically, the sound quality of a smart speaker improves with a higher price tag. However, Apple has defied this norm with two impressive smart speakers that could be your home's primary listening device. Despite its compact size, the HomePod mini exceeded our expectations, and the latest HomePod (2nd Gen) produces even better results.

Meanwhile, the Sonos One benefits from its parent company being focused on outstanding sound quality above all else. The fact that the One SL can be sold without in-built smart assistant capabilities shows that it's a great audio device in its own right.

Both support Apple AirPlay, and can be paired with another speaker of the same type to create a bookshelf speaker-type stereo experience. Neither has an AUX input, but you can adjust EQ settings for both speakers.

HomePod mini vs Sonos One: Our verdict

If you're looking for a solid high-end smart speaker, then the Sonos One and HomePod mini are both excellent choices. The speakers combine smart home control with impressive audio and a sleek design that looks great anywhere in the home. However, the HomePod mini wins out for affordability.

If you don't mind sacrificing Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility, and being limited to a much smaller pool of HomeKit-enabled devices, then we would highly recommend Apple's smaller speaker. However, if you'd rather have a little more freedom and don't mind paying a premium for it, then the Sonos One comes out top.

If you've yet to jump into the wonderful world of smart homes, or you're just curious about your options outside of Alexa and Google, then your attention may have been caught by HomeKit at one time or another. Apple's smart home platform to rival Alexa and Google Assistant, it's a slightly different - but no less appealing - proposition for those wanting to add more automation to their home.

HomeKit was actually launched back in late 2014, but it has obviously evolved a lot since then. The Home app, which is what we use now, arrived a couple of years later in 2016, becoming available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch users. Since 2018, you have also been able to control home devices with the HomePod and HomePod mini.

We'll discuss the ways you can access Siri and HomeKit in this article, but the basic idea of HomeKit is a smart home platform that prioritizes Apple devices and other compatible brands. Keep reading, and take a look at our guide to the best smart speakers for more.

What do you use HomeKit for?

Boiled down to the simplest terms, HomeKit is essentially the name for Apple's smart home platform. Like Amazon's Alexa or Google's Assistant, HomeKit is where control for all of your home's smart tech and devices resides and can be accessed or controlled via Siri voice commands, your phone, or from other Apple-branded devices like Apple TV or iPads.

Siri is Apple's virtual assistant, and they are who will respond to you when using voice commands. For some inspiration for how you can use them to control your home, take a look at our tricks to make Siri work harder.

As we'll go into in the next section, smart home devices that are compatible with HomeKit are more limited than those compatible with the likes of Alexa but, if you choose carefully, there's not much you won't be able to automate, from the best wireless doorbells to air conditioners and smoke alarms.

What are the disadvantages of HomeKit?

Apple is known for quality control, and it has transported its discerning nature to its smart home controls. This means that there are far fewer compatible brands and devices for HomeKit users, but pretty much every area is covered in some way. According to the official Apple site, 50 brands currently offer compatibility, including  Arlo, Hive, LIFX, Philips Hue, Bang & Olufsen, and JBL.

The other limitation is your choice of smart speaker, as Apple currently only offers two options - the HomePod 2 and HomePod mini. While the mini is very reasonably priced at around $99, the more recently-released HomePod (2nd Gen) comes closer to $300 - very expensive in the realm of best smart speakers.

In general, committing to HomeKit for your smart home will also steer you towards Apple's other services, whether that's Apple Music or an Apple Watch, as they will work much more seamlessly than those running on Android or another platform. 

Why would you choose HomeKit over Alexa and Google?

Now that we've gone over the reasons why you wouldn't buy into HomeKit's ecosystem, how about some reasons why you would?

A system purpose-built to work together - Alexa and Google Home may win for the number of devices that work with their smart home systems, but Apple has second-to-none brand loyalty. A smaller number of devices means that everything can run smoothly together, whether that's Apple-branded speakers or the best smart light bulbs from third-party brands.

Smart speaker quality - Apple's smart speakers are a cut above the rest when it comes to sound quality, with even the more budget HomePod mini impressing with its bass levels and 360 audio output. Most smart speakers aren't known for their performance in this area, so those who want their smart home hubs to also offer top-quality audio will do well with either HomePod.

How do you get HomeKit?

If you've decided on HomeKit, then your next step will be to purchase a device that acts as a hub for your new smart home. It is almost always best to assign this job to a smart speaker (the HomePod 2 or HomePod mini in this case), as they're the simplest way to control your other devices as you build out your system. Products like iPhone, Apple Watch, and Apple TV do also have Siri on-board, however.

AirTags vs Tile: Set-up and compatibility

Tile key finders offer much wider compatibility than AirTags, and work with all of the major smart assistants (Alexa, Google, Siri) and mobile OS (Android, iOS). This gives those with a variety of devices at home the freedom to use Tile products as they choose rather than being tied to one or the other. AirTags, on the other hand, will only work with Siri and iOS, meaning you'll need to be an Apple user already.

When testing the Tile Pro, our reviewer used an iPhone, and the setup was smooth and easy. You simply need to download the app, enter your details, and the device will begin to record the location of your keys or other chosen device.

The AirTag uses the Find My app on your iPhone, and it connects as easily as any other Apple-branded product - just wave the AirTag close to your iPhone, and it should find it automatically. AirTags vs Tile: Design

The biggest disclaimer for the AirTag is its lack of a hole for attaching keys, meaning you will have to pay more for a holder. This seems strange when the device's intended purpose is to help find other objects, and Tile, in opposition, offers a range of different products like the Tile Mate, Tile Sticker, and Tile Slim for different use cases. The AirTag isn't as thin as the Tile Slim and lacks an adhesive back like the Tile Sticker, meaning it's really only good for placing loose in a pocket.

All of this said both brands have made an effort to make their key finders attractive in their own right. While Tile products tend to be larger with a more distinctive look, the AirTag is slightly sleeker (to match the aesthetic of Apple overall) and easier to miss. Your preference will depend on how much you want people to know that your items are being tracked, possibly deterring potential thieves.

We'll also note that the mini size of the AirTag gave us a little anxiety about leaving them around toddlers and pets.

Both the Tile Pro and AirTag have replaceable batteries, which should last around a year, though Tile's other devices will last around three years but will need to be discarded when the battery runs out of juice.

AirTags vs Tile: Performance

Generally speaking, Apple has a more user-friendly system for helping you find your items, giving you more of a step-by-step route than Tile's more vague guidance. To get the best out of AirTags, though, you will need an iPhone 11 or newer. 

Providing you have this - giving you access to ultra-wideband (UWB) tech - we found that, while Apple guides you to your lost keys, Tile just lets you know if you're getting warmer. Both apps have map views. In terms of Bluetooth range, Tile wins hands down, with 400ft compared to Apple's 30ft.

An incredibly neat feature allows other Tile users to help locate your lost items, with an alert sent to your phone whenever someone passes them, allowing you to narrow down your search. Apple has a similar feature and has arguably more users to work with by using the in-built Find My app rather than a dedicated app just for trackers.

AirTags vs Tile: Privacy features

Ever since the advent of key trackers, there has been a worry that these tiny devices could be used as digital stalking tools, so you will want to utilize all of the privacy safeguards and features you can in order to keep safe.

For the AirTag, Apple has updated its software to make unknown devices emit a noise when they are placed on a person who isn't registered to it for a long time, meaning you'll be alerted to any hidden trackers on your person or in your vehicle. iPhone users will also see a push notification stating 'Unknown Accessory Detected'.
