The iconic Philippe Starck bath that launched a thousand tubs...
BACKGROUND Ever been stopped in your tracks by a celebrity spot – an icon of stage, screen or style? Well, this cool soap star by the design world's favourite pop prince, Philippe Starck, invokes the same jaw-dropping reaction.
The pure, streamlined tub, created in 1998 and manufactured by luxury German brand Hoesch, became the blueprint for the contemporary
freestanding bath and spawned a host of copycat designs.
Beautifully illustrating Starck's aim to create 'a new aesthetic for wellbeing' – essentially, making the bathroom a new place for pleasure – the bath was an instant success. In fact, for the past decade, it's practically been sending design fans Starck bathing mad.
