Retro Sixties home

An unremarkable box is transformed into a stylish home…

Textile and graphic designer Virginia Armstrong has a knack for spotting abandoned treasures. Even her home was a lucky find. Looking to move from an Edwardian property to a family home with a bigger kitchen, Virginia almost dismissed the Sixties build with its unprepossessing frontage. However, the space inside made her think again.

Virginia, her husband Robert and their twins, Charlie and Lucy, now aged 17, were soon installed. That was five years ago, and the house has since been transformed. 'It was pretty shabby when we moved in, and we lived here for a year without doing anything, apart from knocking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to open up the ground floor,' recalls Virginia. When work did begin, it took four months to rewire, replumb and replace tired carpet with acres of gleaming oak floorboards.

She was careful to avoid making the family's home look totally retro. 'Because I love design from the same period as the house, we already had a lot of pieces that fitted in. But I mixed them up with older finds in order to keep things interesting and not too “period”,' says Virginia.

Take a room-by-room tour around Virginia's Sixties-built home and see how her love of mid-century design has helped her transform an otherwise unremarkable space
