Johannesburg new build

Architect Greg Katz experiments with concrete, colour and clutter

Industrial concrete walls, sharp linear edges and shots of bright colour give this property its distinct edge.

Architect Greg Katz and his wife Caryn designed the house two years ago after buying a plot of land in the suburbs of Johannesburg while living in an Art Deco-style apartment in the city.

'I set out to design a cool, clean, concrete box of a house that was quite unadorned to emphasise its simplicity,' confesses Greg. 'Then Caryn got involved and we've ended up with a home full of colour, clutter and chaos.'

As the project progressed, the couple fell in love with the blank concrete canvas and added foldaway glass doors, citrus yellow kitchen units and colourful wall art.
