Free-flowing modern home

An office is transformed into a chic family home...

This beautiful home has been 10 years in the making. Not because of dodgy builders or tortuous planning consents, but because it has grown with the family that lives here.

When Steven, an architect, and his wife Carole, an advertising filmmaker, first saw the house, it was a tired and neglected office building. The priority on moving in was to strip out the old office fittings and to rework the space.

For a time, Steven and Carole had a makeshift kitchen on the first floor and a bedroom on the ground floor. Their two daughters, Lucy, now 11, and Amelia, nine, slept in a series of different rooms as the house evolved. A 1.5m extension on the back of the house added light and space to the new kitchen, while a later loft extension provided a tranquil bedroom at the top of the house for Steven and Carole.

The end result is a series of interconnecting rooms that respect the age of the building, but give it a very modern flow. Sliding or folding doors connect or enclose spaces, depending on how people feel.
