Colour fantastic Victorian

Hip paint shades rule in Joa Studholme's gorgeous family home…

You're unlikely to meet a woman more passionate about colour than Joa Studholme. A colour consultant for Farrow & Ball (which named a paint colour after her), she spends her days advising on paint shades, then returns to her own place and gets out the brushes. People think I'm exaggerating when I say I redo something every week, but it's absolutely true,' she says.

Naturally, Joa's home, a large, two-floor flat she shares with husband Andrew and children Cosmo, 14, and Nancy, 10, has seen countless paint jobs since they acquired it 13 years ago. When Cosmo was born, 'we were only living about 70 steps away, but we needed more space', Joa explains. 'I spotted this place in a property magazine and made an offer before we'd even seen it.'

Although the space was perfect – a two-floor lateral conversion across a double-fronted house – it was still arranged as two separate apartments. 'The upstairs was uninhabitable, the downstairs was all shag-pile carpet and dodgy glass cabinets of ornaments,' Joa says. 'But the rooms were large with high ceilings, and it had a generous garden.'

Now, the place is transformed: Joa has created a series of light, welcoming rooms and surprisingly dramatic spaces. Take a tour around Joa Studholme's Victorian home to see the results of the transformation
