It's difficult to believe that where there was once a warren of dark, neglected rooms in this Victorian house, now there is
open-plan space on a grand scale.
Its owner Serena Bute admits that she hadn't been able to see any potential for improvement when she first viewed the house four years ago. Her husband Johnny, however, knew this detached pile in a buzzy neighbourhood could be really special, and a wonderful family home. But he also knew the renovations wouldn't be a simple DIY job. He was right: it took two years and the input of architects
Powell Tuck to reconfigure and modernise the space.
One priority was getting rid of the dingy atmosphere. The solution was to remove the back walls on the ground and first
floors and replace them with glass panels that can be pulled back on fine days. And into this cleverly designed space, the Butes have added their own perfectly pitched mix of old and new.
The Butes' home works as hard as its owners. It is both the nerve centre of, and a peaceful retreat from, their non-stop lives. Elements such as the I Love You light installation and rock 'n' roll artworks sum up a fun, lively atmosphere, full of energy and playfulness.
