Wow, what a brave kitchen, I bet it looks amazing at night with the lighting at the ceiling! Where did your kitchen come from? Coloured laquered kitchens are so trendy now - did you get yours from the likes of Roundhouse or MFI? Regardless, it looks so stylish and expensive! How long did it take to install?

Hi
Brave is right - in fact I am so cowardly that I ordered and cancelled twice as I got scared of the black! However, once it was in we didn't look back. The cabinets were from Ikea - a steal at less than 800 pounds. The work top was bespoke and although the most expensive thing I think it makes the kitchen. The fabricators incorporated the sinks and then fitted the whole thing for us. We had some structural work to open the back of the house at the same time and so the whole room opens to the garden. The decks were built at the same time and a new downstairs loo was shoehorned in. I think the whole thing took about ten weeks but the kitchen itself was the quickest bit.
One word of warning on the glossy cabinet front - if you have small children (we have three under five) the doors resemble a crime scene by the end of the week....
Thanks for your comments.

I think that this all looks brilliant. Your kitchen looks fab. I am a big fan of stainless steel and it looks great as a complete work top. What next?? Be brave, it certainly looks worth it!

Thanks so much for your kind comments - much appreciated! We are reaching the end of this renovation and are now looking for the next house. The challenge is always to try and achieve the look on a limited budget. The kitchen came about after I fell in love with the Poliform version costing about 30K and we did this (units, S/steel and appliances) for less than 4K. Roll on the Lottery win.....

Congratulations, your house looks amazing! The kitchen in particular is beautiful. May I please ask you the model name of the black Ikea cabinets? We are based in Zurich and the black lacquer is not listed on the Ikea Swiss website. Thanks v much and wish you all the best in your new home. Katie

Hi Katie
Thanks for looking at our pictures - so glad you like them. The kitchen is Abstrakt and is still available in the UK - I even saw it in Ikea today!
Best wishes Helen

I think your house looks excellent. I really like the bathroom and was wondering if you could let me know where you bought the artwork print from? Thanks.

Hi
Thanks for your comments. The picture in the bathroom is homemade. I painted a ready stretched canvas black and then roughly painted the cow parsley in size ( a very thin adhesive for gilding). I then just applied silver leaf over the top and brushed off the excess. I am the least artistic person in all of South East London and so be assured it was REALLY easy to do. It was also v cheap - I think the materials cost about 25 quid including the canvas which is quite large.

Your house looks amazing!! we are taking on a very similar project in East Dulwich soon - did you get a contractor to do most of the work or did you project manage, using local builders etc??

Hi
Thanks for your comments. We did our house in three phases as there was so much to do - replumbing, plastering, all new bathrooms etc etc. The first two phases we managed ourselves, finding individual contractors and some we had used on previous projects. The kitchen work was managed by a builder - he was great but things did drag on a bit in the usuaul way of these things. That being said he had really good ideas and I think we worked well together for our ideas to become reality. If you are interested in more details of who we used or for local trades people I'm happy to pass them on to you.
E Dulwich is a great place and there is so much going on here at the moment. Are you living here already?
Best wishes Helen

thanks for that yes, we already live locally and blizted the house we are in when we first moved here 10 years ago - when no one had heard of the place! We have found a bigger property which needs a bit of work (knocking thro, bit of steelwork etc) and some general tlc. We will manage the project but are keen to source a good local builder (all our previous contacts have moved away or changed direction) If you could recommend any that would be great. We love living here and can't imagine being anywhere else!

had planned to order the black kitchen from ikea earlier this year, but when I went to buy it a couple of weeks ago I found out it had been discontinued...
i tried looked at all European ikeas to see if i could order it from there but no, its finished everywhere...
i spoke to staff there and they said it had been selling much better then the red range and they were very confused why it had been discontinued.

Boo hiss Ikea - They are a bit weird with the lines they stop - they had a massively successful Kath Kidstonesque bedding range and they just suddenly stopped.
