Hello everyone, I'm wondering if you can help me!
I'm currently re-painting our kitchen cabinets. They are tongue and groove Shaker-style and were cream, but were getting very tired so I'm going with Farrow and Ball "Pavilion Gray" which is a very light grey colour, tinged blue/purple in some lights.
The room isn't huge - we have an island table in the middle but no chairs. Currently the walls are a bluish white but I'm going to paint them a more yellowy cream to contrast with the grey units (I think...!). The sink is a 1950s enamel one in pale blue, worktops are solid oak, tiles are blue and cream (similar blue to sink).
One wall in the kitchen is a chimney breast with the cooker set into it and a wooden surround (so there isn't much wall on show). I've been wondering about doing this one as a feature wall - possibly in dark/bright red (the floor is terracotta tiles, ancient Victorian red and black ones). Would this look awful and bring too many colours into play? I'm finding it so hard to imagine! The room is fairly dark if that helps at all but the dining room opens off it (no door) and is very light with lots of windows, so it kind of doesn't matter if the kitchen is dark (as it will never be light - if that makes sense).
Thanks if anyone can help or has any suggestions!

I suspect the red would look rather hideous against orangey terracotta tiles, pale yellow, pale grey and pale blue (although i could be wrong!)
Get yourself some paper - at least A4 size - and paint each piece the colours you've already got that aren't changeable, ie the sink and the floor. Then paint other sheets the colours you're thinking of adding and see how all the colours go together. It'll save you a lot of effort and disappointment in the long run.

Hi Cassis, Afraid I'm with lindsay - would be a bit of a clash. My mum has done exactly the same - painted old units (but lamp room grey), paired with blue and white spode/willow pattern china and terracotta quarry tiles. She just went for All White on the walls/woodwork. Could have looked too stark but really doesn't if you accessorise well. Got any pictures?

hmm, there is quite a bit of colour and patterns involved and they are rather non-negotiable (floor, tiles, sink). Though it is tricky to tell without pics it sounds as if your room would benefit from calming more than from another feature.
Have you thought about painting the walls in the same colour as your kitchen units?

Grey units sound gorgeous (I'm a big fan of anything grey) but I'm not convinced that cream walls would be such a good contrast. What about white on the walls instead of cream and for colour something like teal or aubergine might look good on the chimney breast.
