Union Jack chair
      #82534 - 10/12/2009 23:53

After a weekend upholstery class I was up for anything. I love those wingback chairs with vintage flags so I thought I could try something similar. The chair is a charity shop find, the white fabric a remnant and the flag was made from denim weight fabric I had at home (the flag was a mathematical challenge though!).

Wow! That's great, you've made great use of a very dull part of a chair - clever you making up the flag so precisely too. Works well with your cushion...

Really effective way of bringing interest to the back of a chair, an ideal unused canvas. I'm in the throws of making a union jack quilt for my son's bed, so do agree about the mathmatical challenge bit!

I enjoy fabric crafts too and really must get on an upholstery course. I'm guessing you'd recommend it?

Merry Xmas,
Loalie

I had a great time doing the course. I've always been a DIY type but nothing like this before. Everyone participating in the class did so well and the results were fantastic. Kathy

A few years ago I did classes in traditional upholstery (not a staple gun in sight and plenty of horse hair!) in the church hall of a nearby village. It was brilliant, really fascinating to discover what goes on inside a chair. I was the youngest person there (and I'm hardly a young thing!) and all the women talked about was gardening and the Archers; I truly thought I had died and gone to heaven. So, Loali, if you find a class, go along, it's great to be able to transform stuff!

I did an upholstery class too - it was fab. And now i know what curved needles are for.
Sadly the day job got in the way so I had to stop going after one term. Why are all the best classes in the day instead of the evening?

Lindsay, same thing happened about the classes I went to. Have got a loft full of chairs to re-upholster (well, three) plus piano stool, and no teacher. Have found a great book and a seller of curved needles on eBay though, so will be having a go in the new year.

Well done on your win. The chair looks fantastic.
