vintage dining furniture shops in N or E London
      #71076 - 01/07/2009 13:25

anyone have any recommendations for sourcing reasonably priced good midcentury modern vintage dining tables - particularly danish style in north or east london - good if they have an online prescence but would want to see before we bought - we know all the ones on Holloway Rd and Past Caring in Essex Rd but welcome knowledge of anyone else's favourites...thanks

Hi MSS, If you travel to Essex Road it is worth checking out Criterion Auction house. Its almost opposite Past Caring I think. You can sign up on their website and they email you when they have a themed week - a few weeks ago they had a lot of mid century furniture. Here you go...

Hi there - thanks yes we've tried there quite a few times, I forgot to mention it. You have to be patient if you're looking for something in particular but they do have gems, unfortunately we're on a time limit that doesn't include next mons sale! There's also Fandango at the bottom of Cross St just off Essex Rd - a bit pricier than some but nice stuff. Also a new one has opened just off Newington Green called the Peanut Vendor - they have a policy of charging fair and reasonable prices for their midcentury modern finds...

Hi there, am also a big fan of the MCM movement (you can see my house on the See My Home Thread). I presume you've tried ebay, but if you want to see in the flesh before purchase then it's probably not your best bet unless you like driving alot!

However, there is a great ebay seller called Rukoka who I have bought from numerous times. He has a studio in Hoxton, East London and will let you come and visit by appointment. Best bet is to contact him through ebay (do an advanced search under his name)and message him. He always has an array of really excellent unusual pieces but, as you know, it's often a waiting game for the right one. Alternatively there are a couple of places on Cheshire Street/Brick Lane and Columbia Road that might be worth trying, aswell as all the shops that surround Spitalfields Market which have great stuff but pricey!

Try The Modern Warehouse, Two Columbia Road, and around Cheshire Street/Brick Lane there are a few small ones which might be worth a look.

Hope this helps,

S

There is this gallery in the Tea Building (corner of Shoreditch and Bethnal Green), Rocket Gallery, which has been getting vintage Danish furniture for a while. We got a fabulous Hans Wegner daybed, great condition, not too dear and delivered by the owner for free.
I, or my husband do pop in often - they now have a huge showroom upstairs. Well worth a visit.

The owner is called John I think and this is the address I got for him : info@rocketgallery.com

Hope that helps.

Yes, I've just learned about the rocket gallery which is shameful as I live about 10 minutes from there! I think viewing the furniture is by appointment only but if you are visiting one of the other exhibitions you can ask them to take you around....
