Curtain fabric that doesn't look like my nan would choose it
      #71048 - 30/06/2009 18:47

Please help!

I am looking for inspiration for a bedroom and lounge curtain for a small London flat. All the curtain fabric sites seem to be talking to a very different customer than myself and it seems to be very twee and country cottage.

Can anyone recommend any great (and affordable) fabric sites that have great colours and patterns without showing me swags and tails?!

Thank you folks

This might sound really obvious but have you tried Ikea? I know some people never go cos it's a weekend nightmare, but it's ok if you stick to weekday evenings (later the better)and they have a good range of un-twee ready-mades and loads of good fabrics if you want to make your own.
Easiest to get to in London if you don't have a car is the Edmonton branch.

Or the Designers Guild sale is on at the Kings Road branch - good fabrics but not cheap.

This company has fabulous printed fabric - take a look at Red Fox, Golden Orchard, Red Orchard or Wild Mushroom:

This site also has some great designs. I've bought from them and the service was good too:

I would avoid the fabric warehouse place in Ballards lane. I went there last year and they tried to con me into buying 42 metres of fabric for my curtains when I only needed about 20!!! They were very pushy and tried to pressure me into a sale on the day. I think it was that they realised I was a bit clueless and did'nt have any idea about how much fabric I needed as it was the first shop I went to. It was all very strange and the fabrics are not that cheap either, they just have some roles with very small amounts on them that are low prices but none of them had anywhere near enough for a set of curtains. I would never go back there they are con artists. Sorry about the rant but this thread has brought it all back to me!!! I would recommend John Lewis, they have a really good range of fabrics, not all are grannyfied but I suppose it depends on whether you are after a print or plain. I went for a plain heavy linen in the end with a double pich pleat heading which looks really good.
Also Kurtinz.com has a good range of the branded fabrics like Romo, Harlequin etc and their prices are ok

I know, I love that new house red fox fabric too!

I also love these - but as far as i can tell they're only available in the USA (via etsy):

If you want something which is bright and patterned you could try Designers Guild.
