Does anyone know the best thing for cleaning original 1930s hall tiles - the little black and white squares? They are ingrained with years of dirt and I'm not sure what will shift it. Thanks.

At your own risk as this is almost certainly not the 'correct' way to do it! On our Edwardian encaustic tiles, I mix up some vanish oxi-action granules with water, give it a good stir until it's really frothy, apply the froth all over and wait for anything up to half an hour (obviously keep checking periodically). Then wash off with lots of clean water.
I've found this gets off dirt that no other cleaner ever has and makes them look very bright.

A solution of bio washing powder is also supposed to work - I think someone previously recommended it on here.

Many thanks - I'll give both those ideas a try!
