Not sure this is the right category for this question but never mind.
I'm debating painting an interior wall with magnetic paint, then painting over it in a pale paint and then doing a few hand drawings of frames (I was going to put the frames wallpaper up but that would probably block the magnetism of the paint - plus it's a bit too framey for my liking).
But i'm wondering - does the magnetic paint work on anything heavier than those tiny word magnets? Plus it's dark grey so will need at least 2 or 3 coats of emulsion over it and i'm guessing that will reduce its magnetism even more.
Has anyone experimented?

The same question was in this month's LE (p133) and the recommendation was that you need 'a few coats - the more the better'. It did say it won't cope with much more than lightweight magnetic letters and suggested as a stronger alternative bonding sheet steel to the wall and then priming / undercoating / painting.
I've also heard it's tricky to get a smooth surface with magnetic paint as it's got iron filings in it.

Thanks HE. I don't think i'll bother then as it would drive me nuts to have things falling off the wall all the time.
Maybe i'll just do the wall thing as planned but put little hooks in the frame spaces. (Or maybe i'll just go off the idea if I see someone's already done it.)
I saw the frames wallpaper in an old issueof LE but they'd hung small round mirrors on the wall, completely ignoring the frame spaces! Seemed to miss the point entirely.

its really hard to get a smooth surface. REALLY hard. i used it for our splashback (such an idiot) we ended up doing a light smoothover and sand. its nice now its done though.
it will hold most magnets, light to medium ones, generally ones with a high surface area. it holds those magnet herb storage jars from ikea. but it doesnt do very well when you try to pin up a piece of paper with a magne tfor example. also sadly my giant disney castle wont stick.
it also has a much smaller coverage than they say - about half.

I painted a panel and I love it but it is a bugger to work with. It's quite thick (and yet somehow drips everywhere) so you do end up with brush ridges in it. In the end I think we put up about 5 coats and we put up photos with a single plain magnet (unless the heating's on, which makes the photos curl) and they stay fine.
I don't think it would be very effective if you painted over it, though. Stainless steel would probably be better. And less messy!

Have you looked into magnetic wallpaper at all? At uni I did a project with Tektura who manufacture it, I mounted a piece of printed art work on to it and it was strong enough to still be magnetic through the paper so it might work if you painted over the wallpaper, not sure what paint you'd have to use as it's a gloss surface but you could always contact them and ask.

LOL. Very possibly (it's been up about a year, I guess). Shall I send you the bill for my new carpet?
