I'm looking to replace our king size bed with two 80cm side-by-side singles (or at a push, 90cm). The mattresses are no problem - Ikea will do. But does anyone have an idea for two 80cm bases that can easily be taken apart and reassembled for moving? In order that the mattresses sit immediately next to each other without a gap, I'd like the frames to be exactly the same size as the mattress, i.e. not have a frame that sits outside the mattress all the way round as most beds do. I don't want the frame/base to be a feature with a headboard etc, just a support you don't really see. Futon frames are probably out as they are too low to the ground. I'm thinking I might have to get a joiner to make simple supports for Ikea slatted bases, but does anyone know of an off-the-shelf solution? Thanks.

This place has a couple that appear to sit in line with the mattress, but unfortunately the simple styles all look quite low. Might be worth a look though. http://www.warrenevans.com

We wanted the option of 2 singles or a pushed-together double in our spare room. We bought two 90cm sprung Sultan mattress bases from Ikea and added oak legs screwed directly into the base. You don't need a separate mattress (though you can add one if you want, to make it higher), just a mattress pad. When we want 2 singles for kids we separate the bases and they sleep on them with Ikea's stretch jersey fitted sheets over. When we want a double for adults, we push the bases together and put a mattress pad on top with a king-size flat sheet tucked over it. Works really well and the bases are very comfy - even though we went for the cheapest (as ours are only for occasional use). There are several different types at different prices. If you go to the Ikea website Mattresses brochure (link below), the bases are on page 30: http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/virtual_catalogue/online_catalogues.html

Don't 2 singles make up the equivalent of a king size? If yes, you could pop 2 single divan bases into/onto a plain kingsize frame/base.

Hi Thanks for the suggestions. I should clarify that I have 'a thing'about big, heavy, imposing beds. Something about not liking to live with lots of stuff...
The idea was to have something very 'portable' and minimal - I guess Japanese in spirit if not height off the floor! So I was hoping to avoid a thick mattress base/divan base with a wooden frame (I'd rather have a frame that can be dismantled and a mattress that can be rolled/folded over). But in the end I might have to go with two wooden base mattresses from Ikea and add legs. Ikea have a new, very minimal aluminium frame in king size which I thought was just the thing, but it doesn't take slats and then mattresses, only the rigid mattress bases. Onwards!

The ikea ones we have are only about 6" thick and don't need a mattress - they don't look like a traditional heavy divan at all.
The futon company does this minimal kingsize frame, but it doesn't fulfil your other criteria. You can take it apart, but its not that easy (we have one of their sofabeds). http://www.futoncompany.co.uk/go-bed-from-179.html

Siane Thanks - will check out Ikea's offerings again on next trip. Sounds like the kind of thing I like Ikea best for - plain stuff that doesn't look too much like an over-eager designer got to it! Cheers.
