Hi everyone, i'm a newbie so please go gently, lol.
Having bought a brand new house, everything is magnolia (except the ceilings which are white).
This is the master ensuite bedroom. It is 20 feet wide and approx 15 feet from the rear wall to the bedhead wall:

(three is a dressing area to the right, and a small double dormer window to the left (the room is wide though, approx 20feet)
I've bought white bedding and am thinking of getting some gloss white bedside untis with stainless steel and white lamps on them. To provide a backdrop for the white, i'm thinking of painting the wall behind the bed a grey, probably a more darker than lighter shade as its quite a big room and there won't be a lot of furniture, just a throw/cushions for the bed and some wall art as accent colours maybe. This room is my inspiration: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kimdimsunshine/3583412618
1. Firstly, does this all sound ok so far? 2. If you agree with a darkish grey behind the bed, am i best going for matt, contemporary matt or silk?
I'm thinking of the dulux grey steel 1, here: http://www.dulux.co.uk/servlet/ColourSchemeHandler?name=grey_steel_1(or maybe 2) but am not sure what sort of paint to get in it. My initial though is contemporary matt to contrast with the gloss white furniture, bedding and lamps? but would a silky sheen better (the walls are perfect so thats not an issue?
i have no experience to fall back on you see
thanks for any help!

I think it looks great. Personally I would go for matt or cont. matt. I recently painted one of our spare rooms in silk in a light grey shade... mistake! Far too shiney. Mixed with white, it also looked even more so!
Love the inspiration pic...

Sounds good to me. I agree, matte all the way, especially for grey.
Is the sloping wall to the left of the bed white or magnolia? I'd make it the same colour as the wall immediately below personally otherwise it drags down the height of your ceiling.
It wouldn't be too difficult to put up some slim cornicing to give a neat finish between wall and ceiling as your inspiration shot has.
Good luck!

thanks for the replies. So you both would choose a flat contemporary matt over a shiney one. Thanks for your input which has obviously come from experience!
the left wall is part ceiling/part wall (this master bedroom is actually a loft conversion). At the moment the roof part is painted white and when it gets down to the side wall it is painted magnolia. I'll take a wider pic when i can find my phone cable for transferring pics! Now you have said that i see what you mean. hmm what should i do with that, maybe the easiest thing to do is paint all three other walls white to match the ceiling? i was thinking of doing this anyway.

thanks for the recommendatin for matt guys, i painted the wall steel grey 2 last night and it looks fantastic with the white bedding I bought against it. I think i now need to do the other walls white now though and get rid of the magnolia to give it a real crisp and fresh look.
thanks for your help guys, i can post pics soon if anyone wants to see the colour of grey steel 2 dulux

Yes, go for it, get rid of the magnolia!! But no doubt you will then find that you want to paint all the rest of the house white too...

housenvy- I did think that earlier! ha ha. I hope i don't have that urge because it will take forever to paint three storeys!!!
Hmm i wonder what sort of white, the ceiling is already white and the sloping bit of the side wall is white. I was thinking absolute white which griffo recommends for being very white. However i worry that it may be whiter than the white thats on the sloping wall and ceiling. i guess i could paint over the existing white, but don't really want to do the whole ceiling!

I'll have to defer to the Supreme One on that as I've never seen the true effect of Absolute White. It may work fine to use it on the sloping wall and leave the ceiling as is.

Absolute white is VERY white sparkymarky! You would need to re-paint all of the white. Did you receive my PM BTW!??

just a couple of pics to show the dulux greysteel2 and to ask opinions on what to do with the rest of the room.- excuse the mess, i'll clear it all up once i've finished the room!!!
Do people think that white walls instead of the present cream and maybe some white pics with black frames abve the bed running horizontally? its quite a big wall! any ideas/suggestions for the room are very much welcome and needed!!

Hi, I've just decorated my room all white instead of cream, the difference is amazing, it looks twice as big. I personally think white with grey, otherwise it might look like you have got gone off white (ie dirty) especially as you have a slope which casts a shadow. I haven't got an accent wall just a large piece of artwork above the bed which matches cushions and bed runner. Looks really crisp, clean and "Posh". Loving your cats!!!

what sort of artwork would look good above my bed? the only thing i have in mind is 4 pieces horizontally.

Have you thought of a taller headboard - more of a statement piece like your inspiration photo of kimdimsunshine?? It would fill the space and make the bed more of a feature........at the moment the bed looks a little lost and small and it needs a little something to make it stand out.

Hi!! The grey wall looks fab but I would definitely paint the rest of the room white - just normal white, not ab fab white as it may be too full-on bright first thing in the morning!!!
If you wanted to keep the current headboard, why not position the picture frames just above so it seems like an extension upwards of the headboard. This would give more impact, but then you would have to be careful not to dislodge a picture or two while you are sat in bed reading!
Good luck.

Likklesis, you're quite right, the bed is a little lost at the moment. I like the look of the headboard in the inspiration pic only funds may not permit such a feature at the moment. shame. i like the look of the two white windows in that pic so i'm wondering if attachind two white long objects either side of the bed on the wall would work. two long white mirrors or white wall feature of some kind?
juliaB, yes i think you're right on choice of white and will not do it ab white. not too sure on the picture frames just above the headboard- the reason being in the flesh there is a big and disproportionate amount of space between the top of the headboard and the ceiling, i think it would look a little too cramped together and then a big open space above. better pics would show this i know. i think i need to find some art and then think how high to put it maybe? who knows, i've never done this before, lol.

Hi Sparkymarky, I can see where you are going with the white feature, the windows in the inspiration pic are just gorgeous, but I think around your bed it might make it look even smaller - almost as if it is being squashed between the two features. Also if you go for vertical white features, or any vertical features, it will make the space seem even taller above the bed
Maybe a horizontal canvas or a self-made stretched fabric over wood the whole width of the bed and bedside tables - something to emphasize the width and not the height would be good. This could be a way to introduce some colour which you could pick up on in other features. I hope this helps and has not confused you even more!!
