me and my better half are off to two weddings soon, and neither have gift-lists so i am really struggling to find ideas for nice wedding presents.
we are not close friends with either couple, and so i am not very familiar with what sort of things they like. neither are very 'homely', but both enjoy the finer things in life (nice wine, eating out, definitely not cooking). im not sure if my budget can stretch far enough to booking them into the best restaurant in London!!
Does anyone have ideas? Can anyone recall a really lovely generic gift they received? Failing a good idea i might have to opt for a lovely picture frame and bottle of decent wine, its not exciting though is it!!

What about vouchers for a really good shop??? I had ooodles of fun spending mine after I got married - and that way you won't get them something which sits in the back of a cupboard, they get to choose how to spend them!!

I second vouchers and they could buy a nice chair perhaps! LOL!

Not sure if it would suit but might be quite nice to get them two letters representing their initials, e.g. http://www.emilyreadettbayley.com/catalogue/product/752/1297
Or a love heart wall plaque (but they seem to be unavailable at present)? http://www.inmyroom.co.uk/walls.html
Or these wooden wings? http://www.coxandcox.co.uk/products/carved-angel-wings/in/decorative-home
Struggling a bit to get beyond stuff for the home!!
Honestly, if in doubt, I'd go for two really good bottles of wine.
Oh, I just remembered a fantastic book I saw once, a hardback coffee table type book full of photos of every country in the world (I think). I thought it would make a fabulous gift for people who like to travel so they can plan their trips together. Can't remember what it was called though, sorry!

If in doubt, we have usually bought two bottles of champagne. Vouchers are wrong kind of money; which you can use only in a specified shop/chain plus usually validity periods do apply. But more importantly, I believe that more or less every household has already items they truly need. Extra items are often useless [****], or even real nuisance.
Charity could be one option?

Check they like champagne before you go down that route. I love wine but hate champagne. Plus I had loads left over from our wedding!

Vouchers for a wedding gift are quite popular in the UK.

This is amazingly helpful, thanks you lot! Vouchers are a good way to go, and perhaps some lovely champagne, or wine that gets better with age (aaaah)
HE for the record, I would love any of your suggestions, for presents like that its almost worth getting married again

Do they have a garden? Garden centre vouchers or even a lovely tree would be good.

Honeymoon vouchers are quite popular apparently. We went to a wedding (good friends) and they had a wedding list at Debenhams or vouchers from B&Q because they were doing up their house.

For friends of ours we went to a specialist wine shop and got them a wine which they needed to put away and drink on their first wedding anniversary, and wrote them a little note to explain.
I was actually reading a thread this morning on moneysaversexpert - the martin lewis site, and they were talking about cheap wedding gifts. They had a couple of suggestions a 1st wedding anniversary box filled with really nice goodies that they had till store until next year. A home made hamper full of really nice goodies - if they like food I'm sure they'd love this.
When I go to wedding I tend to take a load of black & white photo's then put them in a really nice album and then send this to them afterwards (I suppose this relies on you being an ok photographer or not to drunk to remember to take the photo's)
Someone gave us a limited edition print with a really lovely explanation about who the artist was and I loved that.

Hullo... am having the same sort of dilemma re gifts - nightmare eh? Love the Letter idea HE gave, might do that myself. If your lot are foodies, how about something like this? Heart shaped cheese
Or Love mug? ]
Or His & Hers mug?
and sorry - am still utterly clueless re how to post the dratted pictures! Failing that I'd hit the vouchers - assuming there is one near you you can't go wrong with White Company / Conran / Habitat as options...

I think it'd be nice to give them something, rather than vouchers - especially as you get to 100% pick, without a gift list.
A couple of ideas for homewares, which people can always do with on top of what they've got (or do with cause it's better than what they've got), would be a cool retro phone.
I take inspiration from e-tailtherapy.com, where they've loads stylish of items, from lots of different retailers. They can always return it.
Good luck! Cam

Hi everyone, thank you all for your help. I absolutely love this forum, you are all so helpful! I decided to go with a gift in the end - the couple love traveling and have a teeny flat so we bought them something small and personal, a compass. I got it engraved to say "for the journey of your life" along with the date of the wedding. something nice for them to keep.... god i hope its nice and not naff! will give them a bottle of plonk too perhaps
