Your Opinion - £200 Excessive for a Kettle?
      #70306 - 18/06/2009 16:20

Okay so there are many things in the kitchen that are true design classics. Hands up everyone that has a Dualit - point proved. The same could be said for Gaggia/Ascaso coffee machines, Alessi juicers and... well other... such stuff.

But for all my searching, I have never found a kettle that could be displayed with pride next to the trusty Dualit. Until perhaps now.

I came across Case Bugatti before when it's Volo Toaster nearly clinched it in the toaster stakes. It's okay to look at but perhaps a little shouty and no where near as elegant as the Dualit. But the other day I stumbled across Bugatti's newest piece of electro kitchen-candy. The Vera kettle.

http://www.cookingtime.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=2497

I wanted it the moment I saw it. And I think I'll only believe it exists when I see it in all its kettley digital glory. But at £200 is it a bit over the top? My friends certainly think so and edge ever nearer to the emergency exits every time I bring it up in conversation.

What's your opinion? is the Vera the answer to today's contemporary cuppa or is it an over-priced trophy for people that own induction hobs and robotic vacuum cleaners?

ohhh its handsome, it is only excessive if you only have £200 a week to live on....although if i had money I would invest in one of those boiling water taps

Wow. Now that IS excessive!! I don't know what I was worrying about - This Quooker thing is just the justification I need to splash out (non pun intended ) on a fancy kettle. Genius.

Oooh look at all the pretty twinkly lights!!!!! LOL!
It's either uber gorgeous or vile!
I still love my Siemens Porsche Kettle but I don't like the new shape so much.
I shall cry when it dies and goes to kettle heaven!!!

Old shape....

Newer shape....

I agree. Old shape is much better - nice and sharky. New one tilts toward the MagiMix ones with its angled/curved top. Do you have the matching toaster? with the funny rotary dial on the side?

As for what I'm going to spend the money I've just "saved" on... I've just been looking at your website Susan - something has caught my eye. Argh! This Forum is evil... I can't afford these things!

Oh my god, what is this Etsy website? It's got so much stuff on it! *sob

That's it. My social life has just collapsed. I'm going to become a recluse that spends all my time on the internet spending money I don't have on things I don't need (but really, really want). My apartment will be repossessed and I'll resort to something degrading like freelance copywriting in order to feed my design-based spending habit.

For this, I blame you both.

llamaface, i totally know what you mean, its so easy to spend money you dont have! I have to say i think it is worth splashing out on nice kitchen equipment, especially a gorgeous kettle as you will see and use it every day.

How is that for a justification?! Are you going to buy it??

I read the title of your post thinking 'yes, £200 is definitely too much for a kettle, for goodness sake, do you have more money than sense (or me)?' etc etc. I then clicked on the link and decided that it's a perfectly reasonable amount to spend on a kettle. Sighs....

haha tall blonde, how lovely would it be to live a life where £200 for a kettle is completely normal....I had no cash earlier and ben gave me £20 to go and get milk with, when he handed it over he said don't do any random spending...how wild/excessive does he think I can get with £20...it made me chuckle all the way down the road, very tempted to come back with a posh bar of soap for £15!!
