I am meeting friends for dinner tomorrow and thought that I would take a wander around Spitalfields and the surrounding area during the day to have a final pre-baby shop. I haven't been into the area since being made redundant last year and wondered what luverly establishments I should be visiting -- food shops, interiors, anything fab and gorgeous. Any suggestions most welcome indeed.

Not sure that you'll get much (if any) of the market - but are some really nice stores including MONTEZUMA's for fab choccies. EIGHT SQUARE (home stuff) definitely worth a look - as is WHITE STUFF (clothes)
A visit to Spitalfields isn't complete without a visit to Queens...it simply has to be done!
Anyway - have fun! Here's a quickie guide to the area if you want to target some specific places: Spit-guide

I think Caravan has moved but I don't know where. Anything that will steer me clear of Patisserie Valerie and cake would be good!

Hi Caravan is now in Redchurch Street, at the top of Brick Lane, by Squint, so it might be worth the short detour up there? You could even take in SCP in Curtain Road at the same time and the new Conran deli, Albion, on Boundary Street, plus Ally Capellino and the divine Leila's cafe in Calvert Avenue. As for Spitalfields proper, I think Elemental in Brushfield Street is very good (http://www.elemental.uk.com/), then there's Beedell Coram next to the Ten Bells in Commercial Street for antiques and, just round the corner on Fournier Street, Marianna Kennedy (http://www.mariannakennedy.com/) and Town House. If you do go to Elemental, don't miss Jeanette Winterson's food shop, Verde's, which is opposite and down a bit. Have a great day! G

I am not a big fan of spitalfields (I have been going since about 1993) it has changed a bit! We (Mae and I) actually use it as a cheap car park (the NCP nearby is very cheap on weekends) - and then use it go to SCP, Undo The Last (at the top of brick lane - never open!!) and to watch the wasted people coming back from parties at 10 in the morning. The banksy art place is not bad - but to be quite honest the only money we ever spend there is Valerie and Nandos! (there is a wagamana as well - but we tend to go to Satsuma in Wardour Street instead) The Truman brewery complex is interesting - as is the Rough Trade record store. But as you will find - the trustafarians of Notting Hill have grown beards, trying to look like Mr Brand and are living in E1

Thanks all. I will certainly check out Caravan in its new location. I love Town House. In my previous life we held client events there--beautiful stuff. Not sure I can handle Brick Lane -- I always hear about fab shops there but can never find them. Will report back if I buy anything.

Also, forgot to say that if you're in the market for lunch there's the Rochelle Canteen at Arnold Circus, which is fab, and the new Whitechapel Gallery Cafe, which is also very good

Thanks GWD -- not sure I'll make it that far. I will be virtuous and go to Leon. Sad that Labour and Wait isn't open on a Friday though. There is a great toy shop in Brushfield Street that only sells wooden toys -- that may be worth a look. The weather looks fab so it should be a nice afternoon out!
