Hi everyone, I am trying desperately to convince my boyfriend to let me paint the floorboards in our tv room/kitchen. We have stained the floorboards through the rest of the flat in a dark stain and it drives me bananas due to the amount of cleaning it requires! We really don't have the money (or the time - our 2nd baby is due in 8 weeks) to have them sanded and stained so I would like to paint them, so that our home looks less like a building site but he doesn't really want to. I have just seen a pic in the new LE with grey floors but am wondering if anyone can suggest/has pics of other possiblities for me to show him? Help! Cheeks.

We used F&B white pointing 2 coats + primer (really needs three!) No sanding done Best seen here .. http://www.livingetc.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/62836/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1

I've had good results with the F&B floor paint too - very, very hard wearing (and I thought it covered very well in two coats FWIW). I'd recommend a hand sand first to get any dirt off the boards and give the paint a better surface to key to. Make sure the room is very well ventilated when you do it!

Hi UK,
Your floors, and house, are beautiful.
You've inspired me to give painted floors a go. Before I start, did you sand your floorboards before painting or just get straight on in there? (I'm hoping you are going to say straight on in as I can't bear the thought of sanding another floor as long as I live!).
Thanks

We've painted our floorboards with Dulux quick drying eggshell Salisbury Stones 5, which is great as it is water based so no horrible white spirit to wash out brushes. Here's a pic of how it looks in our bathroom.

It's extremely hardwearing and can be mopped but if your partner or guests wear rubber soled trainers they can leave black scuff marks and it starts looks grubby
We have given it the once over every now and then with another coat but always seemed to muck it up with more d.i.y! So you do have to be quite precious with it otherwise the dirt can become ingrained if you don't clean it often.
And don't wear black soled trainers!!!
Almost forgot to mention, we didn't seal it with anything, just gave it 2 or 3 coats (+ an extra one to freshen up a year later).

Painted floorboards can look great and are an inexpensive way of changing the look of a room.
I'd make sure you're using a specialist paint as standard matt emulsions will easily chip and look tatty very quickly.
Ecos Paints (www.ecosorganicpaints.co.uk) has a wide range of floor paints in both matt and gloss finishes and they come in more colours than you can imagine.
What's more, they're VOC free so better for the environment.
Good luck with your project.
