Hello
Do you know how I could support a shelf with no brackets? I'd like it to run the legnth of my daughters wall - approx 3m. There is something similar on page 109 of this months LE. Is it held up by the picture rail?!?
Thanks

That actually uses the picture rail as a batten - the problem is - is it strong enough and will it sag For that you can consult the sagulator (i kid you not) http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm Another idea is a floating shelf This picture gives you an idea of how it is done http://www.germes-online.com/direct/dbimage/50226950/Floating_Shelf.jpg I would always be careful of using these in a childs room - as no doubt somebody will want hang of one one day

Thanks for your reply PMSL at the sagulator! You're quite right about it being a childs room so needing to be sturdy enough for that. She's 5 months at the moment but give it a couple of years I guess.... Have had a quote for a false backed cabinet type thing - sort of a box which will form 2 shelves and have no brackets as the fixings will be behind the backing. Think I'll go with that - will post a pic when all is done.

Habitat offer a floating shelf 1.8m in length - fit two side by side - bout £80 each. I have one in my kitchen in white gloss finish. Or fix that side by side to the 1.2m one they do. Might be a bit heath robinson but i'm really pleased with mine. Fix it to the wall with correct fixings and it'll do the trick for you safety wise.

Hullo
I have something a little like this in my living room - a stretch of floating shelves along about 30feet of wall.
I just got the lack shelves from Ikea and joined them up and bracketed them together at the top to stop them sagging under the weight of a tonne of books. Works a treat! We tailored them a little too to fit the space and go around things etc... have a couple of pics here (sorry, cant work out how to post as an image - hope the links work):
