Douglas Fir Floors
      #69549 - 07/06/2009 12:53

Has anyone experience of Douglas Fir wide boards over underfloor heating( in screed)? Is there a warping problem & what is the cleaning & maintenance like, ok or just too much hard work? Thinking of using it on entire ground floor including the kitchen.

Soild wood over UFH is frowned upon - engineered boards are suitable but not solid wood flooring. Likelihood of warping and shrinkage.Engineered boards are made from a base of manufactured wood substitute (ply or chipboard) with the real wood glued to it - thus giving a stable base that wont react to heat from the floor surface.
I took a punt with oak flooring where my central heating pipes to the radiators are run thru the screed. Where the pipes run there is a definite cupping of the boards - I've got away with it since it's only in a few areas. I couldnt and wouldnt have laid my flooring over heated floors.
