Window decoration.......any good ideas?
      #69318 - 02/06/2009 16:14

I've converted my garage to become a small nook study and a bedroom. The bedroom has two windows - one to the side facing the neighbour's fence the other where the up and over garage door used to be facing the road. You can clearly see my car parked on the drive....path is 10metres away. Front window needs some privacy as passers by can see in thru the garden and into the bedroom.

The room is going to be for a 13yr old boy - he's big into playing computer games and very gadget au fait. We're gonna stick a telly in front of the front window bit smaller than one there at mo. (Ignore the blue sofa..that's just being stored there whilst my lounge floor is being repaired.)
The front part of the room has been extended forwards but at a lower height then the rest of the room. Therefore 70" drop curtains would do.

I've added a couple of pics from each end.

I also have two other front windows facing the road and need privacy in these rooms too... as all bedrooms.

I'm thinking window film three quarters or half way down each window........

Or mixture of wooden venetian blinds and full length curtains at front - 54" drop on side window.

These are just my basic ideas...!!

Any ideas on this final part of my jigsaw would be most welcome!

I'm really trying to find a solution where I can get things off the peg or purpose-made.....and then simply throw the lot together. Additionally I'd like it to be very affordable - budget - £300.

Dicky that's brilliant! - your 13 year old boy is going to be well happy (I'm assuming he's yours and will be there willingly )

I'd go with the film and a simple blind. Venetians are real dust gatherers and i've never met a teenager who's into cleaning or a parent who's into cleaning up after their kids.

The grey is really nice. If I were you, i'd take the 13 year old in question to Ikea and let them do the (guided) choosing. That way he'll be a lot more appreciative of the things around him and if you set a budget, it's a really good shopping lesson.

Thanks Lindasy - the grey is F & Ball Cornforth White - mixed in Johnstones Matt. Good advice re:blind v venetians!
Now thinking of funky blind with printed image!
That should keep H happy!

I love Cornforth white, we have it in my son's bedroom and it's a lovely colour

Have you seen 55max? They will print blinds with a bespoke image or an image from their collection. It's not the cheapest option by any means but may well appeal to a teenager. They have photos of New York and London, abstract images, James bond photos, sports and music ones too

are there any streetlights outside the room? I do like the window film idea but for nighttimeI'd supplement it with a blind as I hate the light coming into the room in the mornings.

The blinds from 55Max also come in a blackout option. I've got no linnks with the company but have shopped there a few times. It might be worth a look but there may be other companies who do a similar thing out there.
