varnishing chair
      #69316 - 02/06/2009 16:05

I hope you lovely folk can help me with my latest diy disaster. I am doing an evening course in upholstery and needed to re-varnish the chair I am working on, unfortunately it looks like a right old mess and I'm not sure how to fix . It is one of my mums dining chairs and she will not be pleased when she gets back from holiday to find I have wrecked it!! basically the chair is a sort of mahogany colour with a polished finish that was chipped in places, I thought I would sand the varnish off and give it a fresh coat but the quick drying varnish I bought looks really patchy and awful. Please can someone tell me what I can do to fix? do I need to sand everything off back to the bare wood? also is there a product that anyone can recommend to varnish it. Hope this all makes sense!! thanks

The patchiness is caused by having an irregularly coloured surface that you've applied varnish onto. You really need to get back to bare wood (by dipping in caustic soda is one way) or by rubbing it down all over with sandpaper. This would be the ideal way to start from. However it's loads of elbow grease.

Rub down the chair as much as you can and in an effort to get the colour uniform stain the wood with wood dye over the lighter areas (more than one coat may be needed!) - get a uniform colour throughout and then you can varnish it again.
Varnish simply offers protection not colouration unless it's combined with a stain - Rustins offer a varnish and stain in one - I use it for banisters. However by going darker with the finish you will get better results.

A good decorators merchants would be able to get you the products you need.

Good luck!

Thanks v much again dickyryan, as I suspected a lot more elbow grease is needed! btw I followed your advice re the kitchen cupboards and they have come up very well although I am having a crisis of confidence re the colour, the FB colours in eggshell are completely different to emulsion , also the wall tiles look awful now wheras they were not very noticeable before. As you predicted it is taking bloody ages! probably not the best thing to start when the weather is so nice
