Exterior colour - help!
      #69259 - 01/06/2009 19:45

Hi All. I'm desperatly looking for advice on exterior paint colour for my house.

We live in an end of terrace victorian cottage (1 of 3 in a row). It stands next to a pretty nasty peachy-terracota in the middle, and a cream on the other end.

When we moved in, we re-painted the dirty white colour with a paint matched to F&B's 'green earth' colour. This colour looks great in our front room, but awful outside! In certain light it has an almost minty appearance. Really not good. I feel awful as I chose it (hubby was not convinced) it cost us a lot to do, and immediately after felt it had to go. I'm afraid of getting it wrong again!

I'm thinking of a french grey as a safer bet?... but haven't seen any in the area to compare to. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks.

Peach! Eeuw! What were they thinking?

Can you not talk the owners of the middle house into going cream too and have them all matching?
It would probably be a bit cheaper too, doing 2 at once and sharing the cost.

If not, might be worth matching the cream anyway. Not much else goes with peach.

I was going to say grey but I'm not sure next to the peach, it could look like an 80's explosion!!
Have you got a pic of the three houses that you could post??

Thanks! Yep, we got home to find the house next door (which was pink) in this new peachy colour, even worse! I don't think they would take to well to a suggestion of re-painting their's, as it was only a few months ago, and I know they were pleased with the colour

I'm attempting to add a pic, which doesn't really do the peachyness the justice it deserves, but hope it helps illustrate the problem.

If we go for a cream, the house at the end is quite a deep cream, it's pretty tatty now, and the owners are selling, so no point matching this. Any suggestions of a tried and tested cream?

......Think my hubby will be even less amused if I get it wrong a second time!

Ambrosia creamed rice pudding would be the perfect shade of cream - check it out. It's cream with the teeny tiniest hint of a peachy hue.

The cost for re-decorating yr place shouldn't entail any preparatory work as this should have all been done. You dont say whether it's the woodwork or masonry that requires redecoration? Therefore the costs shouldnt be too great unless of course access equipment is required.
Painting masonry is really quick - you mentioned next door's colour was changed quickly - generally masonry can be given two coats easily in one day! You may however need the exisiting colour blanked out with a covering coat before applying the final finish.

And don't worry you're not the only person to change their colours once on the wall - has happened to me several times and maybe more if people hadnt been too embarrassed to call us back!!
