I am wanting to install white gloss Ikea kitchen units in a new open plan kitchen diner. The kitchen is U shaped with a long and wide island with breakfast bar. I am interested in getting a good quality worktop but don't know which surface is best and where to get one made affordably in SW London. I was thinking a grey or black worktop. Any tips?

I'm sure others will have tips for sourcing but as someone who currently has a dark grey worktop I would have to urge you to reconsider.. they show every water mark and slight stain. Fine if you don't use it too often but if you are using it on a day to day basis it just looks wrecked all the time.

Thanks for the thoughts. Can I ask what your grey work top is made out of? Laminate?

I would generally avoid polished black worktops as they just reflect (mirror) the light fittings in your ceiling or under your wall cabinets. There are some honed finishes on composites that avoid this, although there are other considerations with cleaning these on a day-to-day basis.

One of my friends makes custom polished concrete worktops. He's based in Shropshire but does travel all over the country so may be worth checking it out: www.huxtabledesigns.com He's going to make one for me once my kitchen is ready - they look amazing and I think can be dyed to grey although the natural colour is really hot.

Second recommendation for concrete worktops, just had our installed - natural colour is kind of sandy but they can alter it slightly - we have ours with white gloss and it looks fab. will post pics and i can put you in touch with installer if you like. we're se london.
