Hi, I'm new to this site but have been lurking for ages but really need some advice so have decided to join to get some from the experts!!!
We are about to tile our kitchen which has a retro feel with white subway/metro/brick (or whatever you want to call them!!) wall tiles which have a matt finish.... I can't decide whether to use traditional white grout or to go for a darker grout which I do fancy but... I am a bit scared to take the plunge.
Our kitchen cupboards are painted in Farrow and Ball Parma Grey which is a blue/grey colour and we have dark wooden work tops - we have also a feature wall papered in a tumeric/mustard shade with a large floral pattern on it in off white and the rest of the walls ceiling are off white. The section we are wanting to tile is between the top of the worksurface and the bottom of wall cabinets including splashback..
What do you think??? Will it be too much or shall we go for it..or would sticking to white grout be more enduring in the style stakes??? Advice would be really appreciated...
Many thanks in advance for all your helpful replies..

Grey - would soften the look of the tiles - make it not so men's toilets (if you forgive the analogy!)
Go for it!

We had the same dilemma and ended up going for white grout. Whilst its not so durable in terms of staying clean, it doesn't look at all "men's toilets" and as we had a whole wall tiled from base units to ceiling (no wall cupboards, just a cooker hood)I'm glad now that we didn't go for grey as it would have been too much. In my opinion the grey is the more obvious and the white the more subtle as you just get the texture (revealed more if you have under-cupboard lighting).
I think in your situation you could get away with either. But I'd say don't go too dark with the grout if you do go for grey. Take a look at this house, which shows examples in the kitchen and bathroom pics: http://www.livingetc.com/housesGallery/article.php?id=264045&num=3 Good luck with your decision!

I agree with sianne personally i would go for white although not as durable as grey think it would look better and your eye wont be drawn to thr grout lines as it blends in with the tiles..
Good Luck

I agree too! I have seen these tiles with dark grey grout in a local restaurant and I dont think they are a patch on white on white - it makes the wall look more industrial and cold i think. White on white looks loads fresher. Post some pics once its all finished, it sounds like your kitchen is going to look amazing. Good luck with the decision

Oh sorry folks I thought the tiles were black rather than white!
I actually have white brick type tiles above my kitchen worktops - the tiles have bevelled edges so by using white grout it allows the bevel of the tile to really stand out rather than the joint.
However I think you'll still agree black tiles with white grout would look like a gents!

I would definitely go for white grout. Grey would just draw attention to the grouting and it will become a wall of lines. It will also show up any imperfections in the grouting more too. Good luck!

We have both. We've used the same white brick tiles in our kitchen (with white grout) and in our bathroom (with dark grey grout). I agree with Griffo - the grey in the bathroom really stands out and that is the feature in that room. In the kitchen, I wanted the space and light and view to the garden to the the feature so didn't want the tiles competing.
So I guess what I am saying is that if you already have a feature in the kitchen - e.g. the papered wall - you probably don't need a wall of grey grouted white tiles as well.
