cost for painting exterior sash windows....
      #68160 - 11/05/2009 18:41

I have a question: how much would you expect to pay for sash windows to be properly painted, (including all the prep work/filling etc) has anyone had it done recently........I am thinking about 15 windows of various sizes......
any help thankfully received....

Susan - I am a decorator and generally I would look at the windows and try and work out just how much time I would take on each window. Obviously there is the question of accessing the upper floor ones be it via scaffolding or from a ladder.

Each window may need different amounts of work due to the weathering effect of the sun - south-facing being the ones needing most work.

I look at the prep work on each window - filling, sanding, washing down, knotting, re-puttying....?
Then the priming of all the bare/filled woodwork.
Two coats of undercoat and then the final gloss coat.

So looking at your 15 windows - at around three hours per window. Some will take longer ...some less!

Total of 45 hours labour - 6 days!

Cost of materials - £150.00 of paint say.

Now I'm never that keen to work off ladders all day due to I don't want to fall off one and by having scaffolding the work will be carried out quicker!

So you're looking at not much change out of £1500 + VAT plus access costs!

Depending where you are based will determine cost per day's labour!

That should give you an insight into decorative pricing!

Hi Susan, I recently had 9 sash windows painted at a cost of £800. The window restoration work had already taken place so this cost was just the paintwork. Hope this helps...
