My Kitchen - Shock to Chic?
      #67372 - 28/04/2009 19:21

As you can see from the before photos, our old kitchen was dark, drab & badly planned. But it was pretty lethal too with its trailing wires, oven sited next
to the door and 60 volts if you happened to touch the metal of the dishwasher... However, it still took us 4 years to get around to sorting it!

Now I am loving the acres of worktop & oodles of storage - plus there's somewhere to perch with a cuppa, or glass or three of wine.

It was definitely worth the 8 weeks washing up outside. Note the luxury of the old sink rigged up to the outside tap.

Hope you all like it!

Wow, your kitchens been transformed. I like the colour of the kitchen (after, not before hee hee!!). It seems like a much more practical space, especially with the new 'wine area'.... It must have been a nightmare to live without a kitchen for that long. Well done you.

The picture above the sink is a really fun personal touch. Is there a story there?

Decodora, that's a brilliant transformation! Is that an Aga you have? I really like the colour you've chosen and am laughing at the outdoor kitchen. Must have been a bit like camping!

Very nice indeed! I love the kitchen units colour and the antique-style painting above your sink really makes everything else stand out...may I ask where are your kitchen units/doors and worktop from?

Well done for kitchen-camping for so long!

Wow an outdoor sink... that must have caused a few arguments over who was doing the dishes! Great transformation! I too want to know if there's a story behind the painting... do tell!

Thanks so much for all your lovely comments - especially about the colour as that was the most nerve-wracking part. It's from the NCS colour system: reference is 'NCS S 3050 G30Y' (Eggshell) and it was applied by a car body sprayshop that just happened to be next door to the Kitchen showroom.

We used a local company called 'Complete Kitchens' to do the job and they were very good - just slow - despite the strong coffee & Kitkats I was plying them with! Deliriously happy not to be washing up out in the wind & rain anymore, of course.

The worktop is Corian in Oyster. It's a mottled surface pattern so doesn't show the crumbs...

Yep it's an Aga - an old 'un. We inherited it with the house and we were going to get rid of it but it won us over and now we run the heated towel rails in the bathroom off it too.

The pendant lights are from Geoffrey Harris (Code PL0402)They are ceramic; £90 each - so was fairly horrified when they were used as a Newton's Cradle one evening...Vinnie!

The stools were a bargain from Homebase. They were £35.99 for 2 in the Sale. Called 'Carlton', I think. Am sure I've seen them in Argos too. They're just the right height.

And yes I do love that picture of the jolly monks. Found in a junkshop, it's a print from a painting by Charles Pears who seems to have had a thing about them. I think they are tucking into some spaghetti but looks a lot like worms. Anyway, it reminds us how we met - eyes across a crowded monastery, a rustle of the habit... you know how it is...

I love your kitchen what a transformation.
I especially like the floor tiles - where are they from?
Well done - I would love relaxing in there on a Saturday morning with the papers and a pot of tea.

Glad you like it! I do drink lots of tea in there.

The floor tiles came from a showroom in Exeter called Original Style (www.originalstyle.com). They are called Vision Grey. Tile size is 45x45mmm Product ref. W1 CS415-4545. Cost £4.30 each. We got a 10% discount but delivery was an extra £50 - cheaper than new suspension for our car, we thought!
