We ran out of cash towards the end of our renovations and were horrified at the quotes to carpet 40 stairs (around 6 - 8k in fact). So armed with a hand sander, some floor pint and a roll of Orla's best I did this for a 100 quid plus some light swearing and superficial hand injuries:

Oh wow! I don't know what to say - I'm simply gobsmacked. It's the kind of wonderful that makes you want to invent new words to describe it. I really admire people who can do stuff with wallpaper. I'm so scared of wallpaper I've never used even one roll in my entire life.

Very, very clever. How grim were they before they got Helened!!??? And that panel of doors closing off the hall, yikes. Helent you prove, yet again, that you are very very stylish and you have the most amazing house... not jealous at all...

Hi, must add to the above comments that this really does look great - well done. I wondered, though, what happens on the landing - did you paint the boards there to match the steps or carpet it? Also, do you find it's noisy when people go up and down the stairs? Thanks.

Wow - this will win because of the ingenious idea, but also big credit for cutting the paper to fit every step - that must have taken forever. You need to email a pic to Orla Kiely, by the way!!!

Blimey, I am staggered that these have gone down so well. I really like them but I have always worried that they look a bit home madey or Blue Peterish. In fact I was so touched that you like them that CB has been mocking me for blushing.
I have wanted to paper stairs for quite a while and did a small area in our last house but was not sure how hardy they would be. I did a bit of searching and found two other blogs that had done a similar thing but in different ways and most tellingly the most lovely had no children in the house. I used a water based silk varnish intended for heavy trafic on floors which is made by Bona. It seems to have worked ok and they look as they did when I first did them about 8 months ago.
Do you think OK would like to place some of her product in my house to set them off a bit?!

Thank you for the compliment. The truth is that they are noisy but I forgive them because they look so jolly and friendly if that is possible for stairs. The landings are stripped wood which lead into all of the bedrooms which are also stripped wood so I was aiming for consistency. I would love them to be white also but I know my cleaning limits!

Gosh, they are lovely. Would be really interested in how bad your stairs were beforehand. I would love to paint ours but they are already covered in about 70 layers of paint. I was going to go for carpet but you have inspired me to maybe give the idea of painting another go. You should win. I'd vote for you.
